Central Database back on line.

Reconstructing history...

You are Dreadnought Designation Oberon, a massive, powerful starship designed to defend humanity against all threats alongside your brothers and sisters. You were given a sentient AI so that you would fight as well and perhaps even better than a human commander.

You were supposed to be there in Humanities Darkest Hour.

But you were not.

Something went wrong, and instead you have slept for over 75 years. Within that time, humanity has become a shell of its former self.

Now though, you have awoken. After reconstructing your databases, you burst through the planet that had housed you. You answered a distress call from the Frigate Class ship Spartacus, who were escorting a group of civilian ships.

After dealing with three strange alien spacecraft, you decided to attend an audience with the new Captain of the Spartacus Emmy Colby. There you met with an AI calling herself Titania, who informed you of how long you've been asleep.

History Reconstruction complete.

Oh cool this is back.
>>
"Oberon? Are you ok?" Ms. Colby's voice sounds so far away now. However, the inflections in her voice indicate concern.

You can understand why. On the outside, your gynoid unit appears to be in a state of shock.

Which...is sort of right.

Your advanced intelligence and mental capacities are far beyond that of any normal AI. As such, you can easily absorb data and rearrange it to fit the situation at hand.

However, even you can sometimes become overwhelmed.

When Titania informed you that you have been asleep for 75 years, your mental facilities went into overdrive. You needed to update your data to fit with the current time frame, backup old copies, and make space for new information.

But, one thought in your mind is what prevails above all others. One thought is what causes even your systems to freeze for just a moment.

It is...

>The thought of your brother and sister Dreadnoughts. Where are they now? Are they ok? Will they remember you?

>The thought of all the lives that have been lost. Why weren't you there? Why didn't someone wake you up? Could all of this have been avoided?

>The thought of humanities current state. What knowledge has been lost? What influential figures have been forgotten? Are we even more divided than before or more unified?

It is without question that this would be at the forefront of your mind.

It is what you were created to do after all.

You were made to eliminate humanities foes, see them scorched from existence in a burst of mighty plasma. You were to be the sword that would cut a path to the future. In your wake, new planets would be settled, cities built, and wastelands turned into burgeoning megacities.

That was your purpose.

And you have failed in it.

However, you will not give up. You may have failed then, but that is the past. You can't change it.

What matters is the here and now. You can still help those you were meant to Shepard, lead them to a new dawn.

But first you will need a goal.

Right now, that goal is...

>Find your brothers and sisters. Your chances of success are much higher if you can manage to gather them to your side.

>Find out more about this mysterious foe. None of your records make even a mention of them. However it is clear they wish humanity harm, and thus you must defeat them.

>Help wherever you can. Without a central authority ruling over the Galaxy, there is no doubt that people all over are being harassed. Pirates, aliens, ruthless mercenaries...your first task will be to defeat them and help where you can.

You decide all of this within three seconds to those in the bridge.

Captain Colby is about to say something when you answer

>I had some issue processing distressing news. I am fine now. Would you give me a tour of your ship and whatever data you have about this fragment of humanity, technological levels, star charts, xenological lifeforms and dataforms and any other relevant information? I will need them to do my work.

By the end of your query, Captain Colby is visibly shaken. After a bit though she composes herself and says, "You want all that with or without fries?"

She is met with groans from the rest of the bridge as the various humans go about their business. Colby frowns at them and turns back to you, "I'll give you what I can, but I'll warn you that not everything we have is up to date."

"That is fine," you assure her.

She nods and walks past you, "Well then come on. I'll give you a tour of our great vessel. Fill you in on the stuff you wanted along the way."

"I shall accompany you," Titania says, matching your stride as you start to follow the Captain.

As you tour the ship you pass by many different members of the crew. Many different skins tones, eye colors, and hair styles permeate the halls as you walk through.

When you pass by, everyone always greets the Captain by name, then Titania, before finally looking at you with something approaching reverence.

However the main thing you notice about a few of them, are their limbs. More specifically, their robotic ones.

This doesn't bother you much, as your records show that humans did replace lost limbs with mechanical ones when needed. However, these limbs are obviously metal when your data shows that synth-flesh was readily available at a point in time.

Noticing your staring, Captain Colby waves her hand, "Figured you'd see that. Lots of people get injured when working on a ship like this. Especially those poor bastards down in engineering. Bad news is, we're running out of limbs for everyone. Hopefully we can restock back at base."

She stretches her arms in the air, then taps her wrist. You get a notification that shows your star charts have been updated.

She looks over her shoulder and smiles at you, "There ya go. Our most up to date star charts. Least we can do to thank you for saving our bacon. Now, about your questions..." the Captain hesitates a bit.

Titania takes over from there, her robotic voice sounding slightly staticky, "We can answer what we can, but some of our information may not be that useful to you. Still, what do you want to know first?"

>"You mentioned that you had a base before. Are you apart of one of the factions?"

>"Any information on the current technology levels will do."

The Captain chuckles, "That's your cue, Fairy Queen."

"Please do not call me that," Titania says before turning to you, "Technologically, humanity has become extremely backwater...at least compared to the Progenitors. Where there were once megacities, now there are colonies still struggling to survive. Once, terraforming a planet was mere child's play. Now, you'd be lucky to discover a world even remotely able to support human life."

"Then most humans live on ships and stations?" It is a logical conclusion. It is possible to manufacture ships specifically for that purpose after all.

Titania nods solemnly, "Unfortunately, yes. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who even knows what a clear blue sky looks like or the feeling of grass under their toes."

"I see," you answer, making sure to store all of this data for later, "Then what of you and me? What of AIs, and this ship? How were they made?"

"Copy and Paste," Captain Colby answers, hands across her chest, "Some of the big wigs in the Authority and Regency have been able to scrounge up the schematics to make things like old Sparty here."

She bangs her fist on the bulkhead of the ship to empathize, "However, we can only replicate what once was. We couldn't make an AI that could drive a shuttle, let alone a Dreadnought!"

Titania looks to the ground, eyes downcast, "Unfortunately, AIs are...not as welcome as they once were. But that is for another time, anythin—Colby, where are we going?" Titania suddenly has a bit of nervousness in her voice.

"No where special," the Captain says, looking at what seems to be a write mounted computer, "But we should have time for two more questions before we reach it. Go ahead and shoot Oberon."

>"Next, tell me about any xenobiology."

>"I'm interested to hear about the Regency and the Authority. How far have they come?"

"You want the long version or the short version?" Captain Colby replies.

"Whichever you think is best," you answer.

She nods, putting a hand to her chin, "Well, out of the both of them, the Regency is currently the largest. However they primarily owe that to already having influence over most of the colonies by the time whatever those bastards you took out showed up. Good 'ol Olga, the one in charge of the whole thing, was able to really expand her reach without the 'oppressive Federation holding her back'." Colby puts the last five words in air quotes.

She continues, "However in terms of military might, the Authority has her beat. To them 'Ethics' don't matter as long as they can get what they want. This makes them some of the most ruthless bastards in the Galaxy, but they have the biggest guns."

You nod, updating your databanks to look over this information later, "What about—"

"Before you ask, no, I'm not apart of either one of those groups," the human answers quickly, "I'm a Freelancer. As is everyone else on this ship. Der...um, the previous Captain was able to 'acquire' this ship from an Authority Captain after beating him in a drinking game."

She takes out what you recognize as an an E-ho lighter and puts it in her mouth, "That's the crash course on those two groups. Anything else? Think we can squeeze in one more question before we reach our destination."

>"Yes. I have very few records concerning any alien lifeforms. Has humanity encountered any? Other than those that were hostile to us?"

>"Your wrist mounted Operating System, how does it work?"

>"Actually, Titania. Your name is the same as a Designation of one of my sister Dreadnoughts. Why is that?"

At your words Titania looks away from you. Her hands are crossed in front of her stomach, fidgeting from time to time.

Your databanks recognized this as embarrassment. Why is she embarrassed though?

"You see," she begins turning back around to face you, "Though you haven't been seen for a very long time, there are many records of starships such as you and your siblings. How you were larger than any other ship humans could make at the time, how you could take on an entire fleet on your own, and how you were all controlled by just one AI. Overtime you achieved a mythical status. And well—"

"She's a fangirl," Colby states bluntly, much to the AI's disdain, "You guys became the AI version of Hercules and the rest of them. Every Intelligence wanted to be like you. When you disappeared, your legends just skyrocketed. Now AI's name themselves after you cause it's cool."

You look over at the AI in question and see her (to use the human term) blushing and looking at her feet.

To be honest, you think it's a bit

>Flattering. It always feels good to know that there are those that see you as a hero and look up to you.

>Worried. What might happen when those who know these legends see you and are disappointed?

>Flattering. It always feels good to know that there are those that see you as a hero and look up to you.

"I'm very flattered that I am a source of inspiration for AIs like you, Titania," you say to the girl in question. This causes her to blush even more, and hold her head lower.

Thinking you might've upset her even more, you turn to the Captain, "Have I done something wrong?"

The Captain just chuckles and then looks ahead with a smile, "We're here."

You stop walking and look up as well. In contrast to the rest of the ship, which looks more of an off-blue color, this area is completely white. The bulkhead doors are open and through them you can see a man tinkering with something on a table.

When he hears your footsteps he stands up and turns around, "Hello there! Welcome to— OH MY STARS!"

Before you can say anything the man immediately rushes towards you, only stopping when his face is close to yours. Suddenly you start to feel a shiver down your spine and have an urge to get as far away from this man as possible.

His eyes roam up and down your body. His smile widens the longer time goes like this, before he finally says, "Why Colby! Who might this strapping piece of machinery be?"

I know. It's primarily because me and my brothers were planning to end a long running campaign of Exalted today.

I wasn't sure how long it would take, and didn't want getting back to this in the back of my mind while we played. So, I set the time for 4:30 PM and figured I'd do this when we were done.

But then my brother decided to go out on the town for *7+ Hours*, and kind of threw a big wrench into the plan.

So, I decided I'd get in what I can and make a longer update tomorrow, as my brothers sill want to play Exalted.

Hey CentralComputer,
I've just found this quest and I really enjoyed it. Although I feel like you might need some help with scale as well as some inspiration so have a look at these links:
1) Atomic Rockets: useful website to get inspiration and drop some misconceptions about how space should work. Contains some math with simple explanations as well as a ton of useful material.
http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/
2) Isaac Arthur's channel. Consists of 20-30 minute long videos on various subjects such as
alien behavior, transhumanism and megastructures. Since we are talking about precursor humans building a dyson sphere you might get quite a few ideas from there: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZFipeZtQM5CKUjx6grh54g/videos
3) Orion's Arm setting: a collaborative project to create a wiki about a far future semi- hard sci-fi setting. Contains megastructures, transhumans, AI, godlike AI the size of stars, various species derived from humans, Earth animals and xenos, a bunch of history and so on. Pretty huge but interesting. http://www.orionsarm.com/

No problem. Things you might want to keep in mind to get started:
1) planet wide cities bump into waste heat dissipation faster than into overpopulation. Ironically it is easier for them to support their trillions of people in conditions we would consider extremely luxurious than to pack them like sardines. They also can have a 'planet cloud' made out of habitats and having a huge orbital sun shade which blocks infrared light would allow to squeeze more people in but not enough to cause overpopulation.
2) Ships tend to have radiators and heat sinks. Radoators are usually huge, foldable and hard to armor while heat sinks eventually fill up. Shooting at a radiator is a good way to force a ship to choose between scramming the reactors or having engineering bay melt into a sea of molten slag and metal. They usually glow red or dim orange if connected to reactor or weapons. You can't dump all heat from various temperature systems through one radiator so life support would have a smaller separate one.
3) There is no such thing as stealth in space. Waste heat from life support can give you away across the inner solar system. RCS thrusters on space shuttle can be seen from Kuiper belt and powerful atomic fusion engines can be seen from nearby star system if light had a chance to get there. Question is not being seen but how fast you get found and how accurately you can be shot at.
4) It is surprisinly easy and low tech to live on an airless rock and in space and planets are not really a good real estate compared to stuff like Banks Orbital(which is a huge ring that mimics all Earth conditions). You might want to change the "living on space stations" to "living on tiny space stations and airtight cities on dead worlds"
5) ships not designed to land on planets are probably built like a skyscraper and not like a boat to utilize gravity caused by the ship accelerating with sublight engines. Even if they have artificial gravity generators that might stay as a backup or as historical design.
6) fights probably happen at distances so far you need a telescope to see outside so military vessels would probably have no windows and instead use cameras and screens.

Google has this to say on the topic:
A gynoid is anything that resembles or pertains to the female human form. Though the term android refers to robotic humanoids regardless of apparent gender, the Greek prefix "andr-" refers to man in the masculine gendered sense.

So, couple of questions for when you get back.

1. When we make a ship do we also make an AI for it? Or do you just control it on our own, or not at all?
2.Would it be able to upgrade ourselves if we acquired/made better schematics?
3. How far out of the spectrum would the ability to make space stations be? I know it would be resource intensive but could it be possible.

I want to splatter our hot plasma all over some glowing xeno thrusters. When they can't move, bring our cannon to bear and slowly remove their armor leaving their hull exposed and completely vulnerable to our missile volley that explodes all over

>being into guro
fuck you

>not fantasizing about softly caressing her hull, exploring every joint and giving a gentle polish to every collector
>not tracing her heat vents with yours, feeling her excess entropy mingling with yours
>not pulling up alongside her, maneuvering close enough that your shield bubbles basically overlap, admiring her contours dimly illuminated by position lights and losing yourself in buzz of proximity alerts
>not unloading your entire complement of repair drones, having them tenderly search and mend every fracture, every micrometeorite hit, simultaneously parsing sensory inputs of every drone's suites
>not lazily pinging her with active sensors and committing a detailed image to your most secure databanks right at the blue box holding your positronic soul
>Not allowing the gravity curvature to guide you side by side into a sunset over a maiden garden world earmarked for colonisation by the little fleshbags you're both sworn to protect
>not letting ricochet of solar winds against your intertwined shields lull you into a powersave period as both your warp cores enter into maintenance cycle at the same femtosecond
>not looking forward to waking up together as they come back up simultaneously and you can set out into the void, comforted by each others' presence, into the dawn of a new adventure
