You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Things were starting to look a bit dire now. Pressed by Abyssal forces to the north and south, you've made the call for your small but powerful squadron to engage the masses of light Abyssal units coming up from the Bering Strait. It was mostly a large horde of smaller destroyers and light cruisers, smaller ships that would be easy picking for the trio of battleships sailing with you, but the main issue was going to be that DD Princess leading the charge.

Annoying bitch was always causing problems for you.

Maybe a barrage of 16 inch gunfire would cut her down to even smaller size. Then again, that firepower could equally be used to thin out the horde behind her...

"Roger that!" Iowa grins with confidence as her massive turrets swivel into place.

"So, our regular bet, Carol?" Washington grins as her own guns swivel into place.

"This isn't a game, Wash." North Carolina sighs.

"Anna, you'd better cover your ears." You warn the little comms ship.

"Huh? Ah!" Anna claps her hands over her earphones as the combined firepower of three American battleships go off at once.

You can immediately feel the shockwave of 27 16 inch guns firing in unison slam into your hull like a flying brick wall. There's a brief delay of a few seconds as the shells fly at their targets, an ominous rumble in the air being the only evidence they were present at all.

And then the shells land, completely annihilating whatever they hit, and knocking everything else remotely close over on their ass. Abyssals pop and explode like ripe fruit, and might geysers of water shoot into the air. On cue, Enterprise's attack fighters swoop down to take advantage of the scattered and disorganized Abyssal formations.

And that was only the first salvo.

Meanwhile, the DD Princess remains undaunted, speeding forward at your position. You speed forward to head her off. Even though she was just a destroyer, your opponent had nasty torpedoes that could knock out even the toughest battleship.

"H-Hoel!" You hear Anna's voice squeak over your radio. "D-do you need any help with her?"

Meanwhile, the DD Princess gives a bloodthirsty grin when she realizes that you intend to fight her alone. Her engines spit red hell-light and fire as she speeds at you head on.

You manage to weave your way through the defensive wall of torpedoes, but you take your eyes off the DD Princess for just one brief second.

And that's all she needs.

There's a flash of red, and in an eyeblink, the DD Princess instantly covers the distance between you and her, and you catch a bloodthirsty smile right before the DD Princess slams both of her leg stumps into your chest.

The world goes white for a brief second and vision spins and twirls as you slam into the water, coughing blood. No time for a damage report, but you know she did a serious number on your hull and internals. Even your reinforced composite plating was barely enough to hold the force of that attack back.

Even now, a splitting pain was spreading through your chest like fire. Just breathing felt like thousands of needles punching into your lungs.

"Hoel!" You hear Anna cry. "Iowa! You need to help her!"

"I can't! I might hit Hoel!" Iowa grunts.

Finally, your vision refocuses enough to see the DD Princess above you, obviously preparing to finish you off with one last kick.

As if you were going to let that happen.

Your guns roar as 16 inch shells are flung at the enemy. Unfortunately, the Abyssals were starting to catch on and were beginning to spread out and take evasive maneuvers, and you curse when you see your shells land in empty water.

Meanwhile, Portland has reached Hoel's location, and carefully picks up the downed destroyer in her arms while her 8 inch guns targeted the approaching Abyssals, blowing apart the destroyers nipping at her heels.

But it was too much. They were still gaining ground on her-

"Get down!" Anna yells.

Your radar warns of incoming contacts from behind as a fresh flight of Avengers buzzes over your head and swoops down on the Abyssals, dropping bombs and torpedoes and interrupting their momentum.

"Sorry, I just couldn't sit back and keep watching this." Saratoga says somewhat apologetically.

Now you see. Sara diverted her attack waves to assist you, but that mean she was no longer putting pressure on the northern group. But at least she beat back the southern group, if only for a short while.

"Anna, what's the sitch on the Strait?" You ask your comm ship.

"I-it looks like they managed to break through their lines!" Anna explains. "They're still engaging the Princess controlling the base, but resistance is collapsing!"

"All right." You grunt. Maybe that's why the DD Princess withdrew when she did...

"Oh admit it, you love it when she gets like that." Washington chuckles.

"I-If it means getting Hoel out safe, then let's do it!" Anna whimpers as she holds the unconscious Hoel. Shit, this up close, you could tell the destroyer was a real goddamn mess right now.

"All right, me Wash, and Carol will be the vanguard. We'll move in a triangle formation and plow anything in front of us out of the way!" You announce. "Big E and Sara focus on thinning them out ahead of us, and Hazelwood and Sweet Pea pick off stragglers! Anna, I'm trusting ya to keep Hoel safe!"

"I know!" Anna nods, her eyes full of tears and determination.

"All right, let's go!" You grin as you take the lead.

Unfortunately, the Abyssals put up a far stiffer resistance than you had thought they would. It seems like they've realized what you're up to and were practically throwing themselves in your way like a giant living wall.

Thankfully, the concentrated firepower between you, North Carolina, and Washinton and Big E and Sara's air power were able to keep them at bay, but only just, and your pace had slowed to a crawl as you had to quite literally push your way through masses of fallen Abyssals.

"N-new contact!" Anna calls out a warning. "It's the DD Princess! She's coming back!"

"No doubt to finish the job." North Carolina spits.

"Lemme at her!" Hazelwood grunts with indignation. "She's gotta pay for hurting Big Sis Hoel like that!"

The DD Princess is fast. She's able to dodge the relatively slow dive bombs and torpedoes the aircraft were dropping on her. However, they do force her to maneuver and lose speed, letting the Hellcats do strafing runs with their .50s. Even though the guns were peashooters compared to even a 5 inch gun, they were still more than enough to punch a destroyer's armor. The DD Princess is riddled with bullets, and with an angered scream, she wheels around and withdraws as Enterprise and Saratoga's planes continue to pursue and bite at her like gnats.

Meanwhile, up a head, you could see columns of thick smoke and swarms of aircraft weaving and maneuvering in the sky. You were getting close to the strait itself now. It was only a matter of time before you would link up with the others.

However, you don't even need to go that far. Looking up, you could see a trio of helicopters arriving. One clearly marked as a medevac, while the other two hover overhead maintaining security.

The medevac chopper drops altitude and hovers over the water. One of the crewmen then leans out.

"We heard you got wounded!" He yells.

"Yeah!" You nod and motion for Anna to bring Hoel forward.

The medevac crew are quick to pull Hoel into the helicopter and get her onto a stretcher. You see Anna linger at the side of the helicopter.

"You getting on too, Miss?" The crewman asks.

Anna looks to you, tears in her eyes.

"B-but-" Anna protests.

"Anna." You kneel down and look her straight in the eye. "People are still fightin' and dyin' RIGHT NOW. If you stay here and help coordinate things, that means less people gettin' hurt. You can make a difference here and now!"

"Y-you're right." Anna sniffs and wipes at her eyes as the medevac takes off.

"Here." Portland hands a handkerchief to Anna. Hoel will be okay. She's had to deal with worse.

"I-I hope you're right." Anna sniffs.

Not gonna lie though, a bit salty that DD Princess essentially has one up over Hoel now, but considering how this is the first time she's been knocked out so far I guess there's satisfaction in that.
