You’re woken up by the sharp pain of someone kicking you in the ribs. It’s not hard enough to do any real damage, but it gets the same message you’ve gotten for the last few weeks across rather well.

“-up… oan” A fair voice joins the pain, growing clearer as another kick hits you, “Get up! Stupid Gaijin-Joan…”

You finally come to full lucidity, to the glaring visage of your employer. You say employer, but you’re neither wanted nor getting paid. Still you’re getting a free ride out of all of this, so you don’t flip him off like you’d like to, and instead get up to address him.

“What” Your voice, normally coarse and rough, comes out in a near growl from being rudely woken up.

The man almost takes a step back, from your tone as much as the fact that you’re now towering over him. Instead, a snarl comes to his face while he opens his mouth, “Device break again! Stupid Gaijin-Joan go fix! Worthless! Loss of time costing me money! Go Go Go!”

He rudely shoves you out of the carriage, though you easily land on your feet. You briefly consider giving your ‘employer’ a piece of your mind, but the fact that he could dump you in the middle of this shit-hole tempers that instinct. Still, the asshole could at least get your name right...

What should you do?

Wasting no more than a moment to start grumbling to yourself, you immediately make your way towards the source of the problem. It’d not hard to find either, there’s almost a dozen people, all dark hair and tanned skin like your employer, crowding around one of the carriages up ahead. One of them notices you, and a quick murmur goes through the group. As you approach, they all back away like you have the plague. You can hear the occasion attempt at a quiet comment on you and your appearance, but you ignore it.

There’s work to be done, and getting bogged down in another pointless argument about your blonde hair isn’t going to solve things. So you walk past them as they gossip, approaching the broken down machine.

You immediately drop to the ground and crawl under the vehicle. The problem becomes apparent almost the moment you get oriented: the shoddy, cobbled together wiring of this machine got knocked loose. You idly think that it probably got knocked out of place from a loose rock ricocheting off one of the wheels hitting the exposed undercarriage.

Securing the jury-rigged contraption as best you can, you crawl back out and hop to your feet. A quick look to make sure that the cobbled together engine isn’t damaged, you manually start the entire sodding thing.

It sputters and coughs for a moment, almost making yourself feel like you messed up somewhere along the line, before roaring to life. Turning back to the small crowd, none of them say a word to you before dispersing.

Out of almost compulsion, you take a look around your surroundings. The area you’re in currently is mostly woodlands and forest, thick and impassible at points aside from the dirt path you’re on. There’s no sign of bandits, or wildlife, or… other things… that might pose a threat to you. And you like that.

Because it means you can go back to sleep now.

You walk briskly back to your carriage, passing by your employer who’s looking at you in disbelief. You fight the urge to offhandedly remark that if he didn’t cheap out on repairs so much he wouldn’t have so many break downs. The fact that routine maintenance would put you out of a job keeps your mouth firmly shut.

Entering your section, you lay back down where you were previously. The hard wood floor isn’t comfortable in the slightest, but it’s not the worst place you’ve taken a nap on. Thankfully, the process of repairing the engine took less than three minutes. You easily nod back off.

Hours later, you wake up in time to arrive at your destination. It’s some random border town you never got around to learning how to pronounce the name of. Something along the lines of “Bao Shang”.

You picked it because it was the first name on the map that popped out to you. In retrospect, that probably wasn’t the best idea.

Regardless, you gather your meager things and depart. Your employer curses your name one last time; you give him a wave back.

Getting into the town proper, you stop. You’re not exactly going anywhere in particular, but you’ve learned that aimlessly wandering is a good way to get robbed.

First things first, you should

You decide it's time to take stock of your supplies. You're finally in a town, it'd be stupid to not stock up at some point. But first, you need to know what you already have.

You have:
> One (1) Heavy Cloak with Hood
> One (1) Concealed Dagger
> Two (2) Changes of Clothing
> Two (2) Silver Coins
> Five (5) Copper Coins
> Zero (0) Ration Packs

You're definitely at the end of your reserves. You guess it'll cost about one Silver coin for a night at an inn, and three Copper coins for a small meal.

You're going to need money if you want to stock up to a reasonable degree.

The dark thought crosses your mind, and you seriously consider it. He was a greedy asshole.

And then you hear it. Almost tauntingly, the sound of the same engine you did your best to get back into mint condition roars and grumbles. Turning around, you see the little shit leading the convoy back out of town, full of people going elsewhere.

Well, shit, there goes that.

> Moral alignment was never established, correct. What was established though was that our existing skill set is focused on engineering, problem solving, and artificer work in general. The option to be a more Rogue-like character was available, but popular vote decided against. Deciding it's time to get moving again, you throw your pack back over your shoulder and get moving further into the town.

This isn't a heavily populated town, it was in the middle of nowhere border between the Western and Eastern provinces. Some claimed it was important for keeping two clashing cultures in line with one another and others yet claimed it made for good trade. The second one you could see, but it didn't take a genius to know why neither side made a move to bring the neutral ground into the fold: the area was just too shit for either to care about.

Looking about the crowd, you notice a few individuals with Western features; none are full blooded like yourself, but it makes sense that there'd be mixing here. The rest of the crowds are either fully Eastern, or doing a good job of hiding their heritage.

Your short trip doesn't go unnoticed either, sporadically placed are guards in light or medium armor wielding spears. To a man, each one you pass gives you a hard look and tracks you until you're out of sight. It's not hard for them to do either, your mop of blonde hair, and the fact that most of the people around you barely make it to your chin, easily identifies you from crowd.

Even so, no one stops you or does anything more menacing than stretch and you continue on your way.

It takes some time, but you find a Western- Style Inn on the other side of town. You bump it down to Western-ish when you make your way through the front doors and find you're a room that's a strange mix of Western and Eastern cultures. There's a perfectly normal bar ahead of you, looking at home despite the fact that a group of guests are kneeling on the floor bare feet away from the stools.

Still, your entrance goes almost unnoticed, the few that notice you look you over once before returning to their companions or their food.

Ahh, good olde Apathy. You missed her so much.

That bar looks extremely alluring at the current moment, all smooth polished wood where beer, mead, and food (actual food!) call themselves at home.

But the day is far from over. And you've gone hungry for longer than an afternoon before.

So, following the natural instinct you have from being in dozens of bars with job boards before, walk forward and to the right. The job board is right there with it's promising contracts of silver and opportunities to tinker around with tech you've never seen before and paper matting and what?

Your eyes focus, and you realize there's no job board at all. Seriously, who ever designed this bar must have been insane. They just put up one of those paper sliding doors Easterners love to use instead of a nice, solid wooden door right on the wall. The bloody door doesn't even lead anywhere!

With a sigh, you step back. Clearly this is just another reason why you prefer Western bars to this... this... whatever the fuck this crap was!

Before you can really get yourself going, though, you notice that one of the patrons is looking at you. You meet his gaze, to which he returns for a few seconds, before looking at someone over your shoulder. Since he turns back to his drink after, you look to where he was staring.

Behind the bar counter, there's a dark-haired woman there staring at her. You can tell that she wants to say something, but doesn't know what to say exactly.

The thought occurs to you that she shouldn't be trying to speak to you at all, besides your previous employer, you've probably had a collective four words said to you by an Easterner.

And then you notice, poking out from under her hair, a single, pointed ear.

She's an Elf.

You'll be honest: She's bloody hot. Dark hair and pale skin suit her well, along with a nice pair of emerald green eyes.

You'll also be honest in that it's been a while.

So, really, who can blame you for the string of ideas that go through your head.

Feeling perfectly justified in your next course of actions, you casually walk up to the bar, take the seat directly in front of her, and give her an award-winning smile.

Her heart doesn't stop, but it's a damn near thing if the massive flinch is anything to go by. You have to give her credit where it's due, she's taken things better than you expected.

However, you really don't plan on stopping with a smile.

"Hello, miss, are you in need of a handy man? Oh, and I'll have some alcohol. Before, during, or after all work for me" Your grin is practically shit eating at this point.

There's a moment where she goes rosy, but then her eyes harden slightly and it goes away. It's obvious she's been hit on plenty before, though it really begs the question of why she reacted to you in the first place? Maybe it's because you're not plastered out of your mind.

"I can serve you alcohol, though that kind of service is something you'll have to find somewhere else".

Well, that was fun while it lasted:

It takes you a moment to realize that there's probably been quite a number of drunk guys asking if she's a hooker, not just flirting, before. Given how quickly she recovered, it's old news to her at this point.

And, as much as you'd like to see her blush again, you really need a job. And a meal. And lodgings. So maybe you shouldn't piss off this inn's barkeep.

You keep up the smile though, since that seemed to get to her more than the half-attempted flirting did.

"Easy, miss" You move your hands wide in what you hope is a calming gesture in this culture, "All jokes aside, I'm looking for a nice meal, a place to sleep, and a-".

"Job, yeah I could tell" She looks down at you, "You were looking for the job board, correct? Well, things work a bit differently in this town".

You give her a questioning look for her to continue. She obliges, "See, here, if someone needs a request of sorts done, they come here to this bar and tell me about it. From there, I go through the people who normally complete these requests and send them to meet with the original individual. From there, your contract is negotiated between the two parties first-hand".

You refrain from asking her if everything in the East is this overly convoluted. The fact that you have to go find your employer even after accepting, although in this case it'd probably more so be getting assigned, a request instead of just going out and doing it confuses you. Though, you suppose working directly between parties, instead of using a bar as a proxy, would carry certain advantages.

It's at this point that you realize you haven't introduced yourself. Some professional you are...

"It's a bit late," You begin, holding out your hand for her to shake, "But my name's John; I'm an Artificer".

She regards your hand for a moment silently. You can't really blame her, considering your hand is calloused and scarred. She still takes it, though, giving you a small squeeze, "Sierra, Bartender".

"So, Sierra," You begin, trying your best to not word this poorly, "You wouldn't happen to have any jobs for a man of my 'caliber', would you?"

She doesn't seem to take your comment the wrong way, simply thinking to herself for a moment before turning back to you.

"Do you have experience repairing wiring and magic conduits?" Is her first question.

You nod, "Yeah, plenty".

She too nods, before taking a long look at you. You notice her gaze leaves your eyes for a while before coming back up, "As of now, I've got two jobs you can take: one you can do now, and the other you'll need to wait until later to do".

"Okay?" You can't help the uncertainty in your voice at how vague she's being, "What's the first job about?"

"You'd be helping out Old Man Goo Hwi, before you ask yeah he's been around for a while. He's got a few magical lamps he'd like to have repaired, but an Artificer is a rarity around these parts".

"Alright, I can fix those so long as I can take a look at what's been damaged. What's the second job?" You can't help but ask.

Sierra goes quiet again and stares at you, "The second job is here, after closing. Come here and help me out, and I'll give you a meal on the house".

You can't help but feel there was a bit left unsaid there, though your instincts tell you it might not be what you're expecting.

"Well," She tilts her chin and considers her words, "He's old for one. Like, seriously, unnaturally, old. He's been around a bit longer than I ha- Ah!". You're amused at the fact that even elves can trip up like that.

Sierra gives you a glare in response.

"I guess what I meant to say was... is he an... asshole?" You're not entirely sure how to phrase it, but you point to your hair and your eyes and Sierra gets the message.

"I'll be honest, I really don't know for sure, though I don't think you have to worry about that".

"And why's that?"

"Goo Hwi is blind"

That doesn't sound ominous at all.

"Right, I'll go do that" You get up from your bar stool, grab your things, and leave, waving to Sierra on the way out.

The day is well into the late afternoon at this point, and you pick up your pace as you make your way through the crowds. You'd like to get this job done, and then get some drink in you before you have to deal with whatever the 'second job' is.

Making your way out of the town proper, you find a single path leading Southwards. Looking around, you don't see a home of any sorts. The path also doesn't look too well traveled.

Sierra did say 'Outskirts'. Of course, she neglected to tell you just how far outside of the city Goo Hwi's home was.

Sighing to yourself, there's really only one way to go; you start down the path.

...

As far as you can tell, it's been almost an hour and you still haven't seen anything. You're not entirely complaining, it's been a while since you were able to just take a stroll through a forest. You keep check around yourself to see if you'll get ambushed, but nothing catches your eye aside from a pair of squirrels chasing each other.

A bit further, though, and you catch the beginnings of a home. Your last few steps brings the whole thing into view and you stop in your tracks.

Sierra wasn't joking.

The home, if you can call it that, is probably close to twice, if not three, times the size of Sierra's bar. Done up in what you can really only think of as some kind of temple, the entire building manages to be at once imposing and homey. You realize the large garden and assorted shrubbery contribute to the later.

Speaking of which, there's a figure tending to a section of flowers.

An Old Man.

Without any issue, he rises from his kneeling position and turns to you.

"Aahh...? Are you the young lad Sierra messaged me about? Well, don't be a stranger now".

Immediately, two things catch your eye.

First, be respectable.
Ask him if he's Goo Hwi.
If so ask him if he's a monk or religious figure, if so, address him as so called religious figure.
Then, introduce yourself as an artificer who'd like to fix his magik lights.
Finally, ask where the lights are located.

For some reason, you have the incredible temptation to put on a stupid accent. It's an impulse decision, and thankfully you squash it before it gets much further than that.

Instead, since you feel so absurdly out of your depth at the moment, you fall back on what works best: politeness.

Stepping forwards, you give him a formal bow before speaking up, "Yes, I am here on behalf of Sierra. You are Goo Hwi, correct?"

He chuckles slightly at your actions and tone, "Ah, relax son, I'm retired nowadays. No need to be formal to a man with no title".

You feel embarrassed, mostly at the fact that you're telegraphing your nerves so much, and that you just bowed to a blind guy. Seriously, it's not like he'd notice...

"Alright, can you show me the lights that need repair?" Your tone settles as you get into a more professional mindset.

Goo Hwi motions for you to follow him as he begins to slowly walk further into what you're now thinking of as 'the compound'. Moving to catch up, you match his pace alongside him.

There's a bit of comfortable silence as you step inside. He takes off his shoes, and you hasten to follow his lead.

You've got to admit, for such a large home, things feel rather... spartan. You know Eastern Culture tends to favor minimalism over extravagance, but this is a bit absurd. Still, you continue on your way.

Goo Hwi is guiding you through the halls of his home to some room that will most likely have the lanterns you need to repair.

You get the feeling that you're really not getting the entire picture on the old man, when you pass by a slightly ajar door.

You resist the urge to react as you get a split second view of the room.

Weapons of clear Eastern Style line an entire wall, each of them polished to perfection. Strangely enough, there's a few Western weapons on a rack near the back.

And then your view is gone as you continue on your way.

Despite your distraction, Goo Hwi doesn't seem to have noticed that you saw what was in that room.

It doesn't make you feel any better; since the moment you've stepped onto this man's property, something has been bugging you. And it only begins with the two jagged scars along the left side of his face.

You really can't help but feel like you're trapped in the same room as a demon, your Concealed Dagger not making you feel better. In fact, it only seems to make things worse.

If it comes down to it, the only way you'll walk away from a fight is if the old man dies before he can move.

If he dies a second later, it'll probably be a tie.

>>
>>1722456

Your morbid thoughts cause you to swallow slightly in an attempt to regain your composure.

It's not easy, but at least you'be arrived at your destination. Goo Hwi slides open a door and ushers you in. The room is simple enough, evidently purposely keep slightly shabby for work just like you're about to do. There's a low table for you to work on and off in a corner you can see a box.

A quick question confirms that the lanterns you need to fix are within, so you walk over and open the crate.

About a dozen or so lanterns are within, so you start to take them out and place them on the table.

First things first, you need to figure out what the problem is.

You arrange the dozen or so lanterns out on the table and start examining them as best as you can without removing anything. Thankfully, the glass that makes up the exterior of the artifact is entirely without damage. Some mud here and there, but you can easily fix that.

As for the interior components, the problem becomes apparent very quickly. Most of the conduits are covered in a relatively thick layer of muck and grime. A few of them have their wiring pulled from it's rightful places, but there's enough of them that you quickly figure out how everything's supposed to go.

All that's left is to get to the repairing.

"Goo Hwi? May I have a brush and a cup of water?"

He nods and walks out of the room to retrieve your supplies. As he's doing that, you start carefully removing the interior components from the exterior shell.

It takes you some time, but by the time he's back you have all of the components in need of cleaning spread out on the table.

The old man returns, handing over a thin paint brush and a cup of water. With your supplies, you now need to get to work.

You take the paint brush, wet it in the water, and get to work.

Making sure to take your time, you take extreme care in cleaning the delicate circuitry. Thankfully, you're more than dexteritous enough to lightly scrape away the grime that's built up. Making sure there's no dirt left and that the wiring is where it should be, you move onto the next one.

When you're done with that one, you continue down the line.

Getting into a rhythm, time begins to pick up and you go into a bit of a trance as your movements become more and more methodical.

So it takes you a while to realize that Goo Hwi is still in the room, and that he's watching you work quite intently.

"Oh... Don't mind me," He gives you a small smile, "I always enjoy watching an Artificer at work, and it's such a rare sight to see one such as yourself so far outside of the Eastern Mainlands".

"Thank you, sir. I enjoy my work, I get to tinker about with magitech and help people out at the same time," You shrug slightly.

Goo Hwi hums thoughtfully to himself, still staring straight at you with those supposedly blind eyes. Well, his eyelids are firmly shut, but the sentiment still stands.

Unnerved slightly by that fact, you decide to shift the conversation, "So, Goo Hwi, what exactly do you do? Are you a smith of sorts? I got a quick look at your, uh, 'collection'..."

You trail off as you finish your statement, the old man still staring at you. After a few seconds, though, he starts to laugh. It's not sinister, thankfully, moreso in good humor than anything else.

"A smith, me? Oh no no. As for that room you saw, I guess you could say they're souvenirs from when I was younger. I used to be like you, a traveler of sorts. I'd wander about up and down the lands on my own. But, those days feel like a lifetime ago".

He stops talking there, so you get back to work.

It's still a bit weird to be working with someone watching your every movement; most repairs you make have your employer off doing something else while you work.

Still, you continue with your task.

You can work and talk, though.

He hums to himself again, apparently in no rush to answer you, "Sierra, hmm? Well, she's been working at her bar for quite some time now; I forget the year she moved here and set up shop. She's done a good job of managing the town's requests. Her knowledge, judgement, and abilities make her perfect for the position"

You nod along to that. Sierra definitely took your measure before sending you off, so everything makes sense in that regard. Still, you wonder what Goo Hwi meant by 'abilities'.

>>

That last bit that he said sticks in your head and stubbornly refuses to let go. Having sure that you're still working, you bite the bullet and open your mouth.

"Goo Hwi, what do you mean by Sierra's 'abilities'?"

A single gray eyebrow raised at your question, "You're a very observant man, John, I don't know how you missed it when you met her".

"Missed what?" Is your obvious response.

Hwi raises up his right hand and taps the wrist with his left, "Sierra's a Mage".

Oh. She was wearing some kind of gem stone on her wrist, wasn't she?

"I...see..." You awkwardly trail off. It made sense how she got in contact with him before you walked here. Certain mages could send telepathic messages over a certain distance. You never really asked about the specifics, but you know there's those kinds of mages spread out everywhere to keep more remote regions in contact with one another.

Deciding to end the conversation on that note, you focus on finishing up your work. It takes some time, as the last few have a serious amount of mud caked onto the circuits. But you manage to get them all cleaned and reattached to the lanterns. Testing each one to make sure they are repaired, you're rewarded with a dozen low-lights gently glowing.

Goo Hwi looks incredibly pleased at your work. A quick moment of reaching into a pocket and he pulls out a small pouch.

"Here, I believe this to be reasonable payment"

He puts Fifteen (15) Silver Coins down on the table infront of you. He's right, for the area you're in this is reasonable payment.

And you really want to get going so you just accept the payment.

> Gained Fifteen (15) Silver Coins!

Putting them away into your pocket, you give Goo Hwi another bow as you exit his 'home'.

You were in there for far longer than you though, as it's clear the sun set a while ago. With haste, you start back down the path back to town.

...

Again, it takes you almost an hour to get back, but you make it without issue.

The jingle of coins in your pocket reminds you that you actually have some spending money.

Sierra said she needed her help around this time, so to the bar you go.

The streets are quiet this time of night, so you easily make your way towards your destination. Again, the guards give you hard looks, but don't act on anything.

You make it to the front of Sierra's Bar and stop before opening the door. Inside, you can hear a bit of yelling and the sound of something heavy hitting the floor. Taking a deep breathe and opening the door, it quickly becomes apparent why Sierra wanted you here.

Almost all of the day shift guards were here getting plastered. One of which fell on his ass and is laughing like a madman. A few other things, like a slightly broken bar stool and a couple spilled drinks catch your eye, but you still walk through the room looking for Sierra.

The elf in question comes flying out of the back room with a full tray of food. She quickly distributes the meals before getting back to serving drinks.

You catch her attention for a moment, and while she doesn't say anything, she looks relieved.

You resist the urge to find a dark corner to sulk in, and walk up to the bar. Sierra is busy loading up the same tray she carried food in with with assorted alcoholic drinks. You're about to open your mouth to ask her what she wanted you to do exactly, when you're interrupted by a voice yelling across the bar.

"Sierra! Where's that round!" One of the more sober guards shouts out for his table. She's just finished loading up the tray when you take it out of her hands.

Sierra looks confused for a moment, though quickly recovers as you make your way to the table and start serving.

And that's the position you find yourself in for next two to three hours. Whenever there's a need for booze, you're there making a delivery. There's a few instances where one of the more inebriated guards looks like he's going to start a fight with you, but cooler heads prevail and you don't need to throw anyone out.

It's pretty wild night, and you wince everytime you hear something break. Thankfully, it slows down to an end eventually.

Now, though, you have an entire bar full of drunk off their asses guards. Not one of them is sober enough to walk out on their own feet. A few of them are still semi-lucid, but a large number of them have passed out. Sierra has already given out the final call some minutes ago, and now she's staring at you rather intently.

The temptation to simply start picking guards up and throw them out the door is there, but you really should check with Sierra first.

"So, how exactly do you want to handle this?" You comment to the elf.

She gives you a rather noncommittal shrug, "Once they're out of my bar, they're not my problem".

Perfect.

You save yourself some effort and prop the front door open. Starting with the ones closest to you, you get to work removing the drunks. A few of the smaller ones you can take two at a time, but quite a number of them require both of your hands to move. Still, none of them are lucid enough to resist you.

And then one suddenly grabs you arm as you pick him up, "H-H-hey... Arnt juu dat Gaijin-fuck from earliaaarr..."

He passes back out before you can do more than scowl. Regardless, you take a particularly vindictive glee when you pick him up by the scruff of the neck and toss him into the dirt outside.

A few minutes later, and the bar is down to you and Sierra. She's already getting to work cleaning up the broken bottles and glasses, so you turn to the several broken chairs and bar stools

You thank your lucky stars in that the broken stools are just messily dissembled. If the wooden supports were snapped, you'd be in for a long, boring process of gluing the fragments back together and waiting for them to dry.

Instead, you simply flip the first one over and start snapping the pieces back together. It barely takes you a minute to fix the thing, and you're onto the next one. There's only four you need to repair in the first place, though the last two give you a bit of trouble. Still, you finish quickly enough and move onto the next issue.

A half an hour of sweeping up debris and wiping down table tops later and you're on the bar counter waiting for Sierra to come out with your long-awaited meal.

It doesn't take long for her to finish up, and she brings out what looks like some kind of stew. You suspect she probably just threw together a bunch of leftover ingredients into a pot, but it's so late you don't bother to compain and just dig in.

You've been practically living off of ration packs for last three weeks, so the taste of something hot and homemade is a welcome addition to your night. You calmly devour your food while Sierra slowly wipes down the bar counter around you.

There's an easy silence in the air, but you could probably talk to her if you wanted to.

Thinking on it, you really don't know all that much about Sierra; aside from her being a mage and that doesn't exactly count since you didn't hear it from her. So, after remembering your manners and swallowing the food in your mouth, you speak up.

"Hey, Sierra, if you don't mind me asking, what's an elf doing in a backwater town like this?"

She stops in the middle of getting a stain out of the wood counter and turns her gaze to you, "I don't know, John, what's a 'Gaijin' like you doing in a backwater town like this?"

You don't really want to answer that, though you suppose that's the entire point of her saying that.

What do you answer with?

You think to yourself for a moment. You suppose you could tell her a bit about yourself, though you'll have to creatively edit a few things.

You left the past so it could stay there, not so you could dredge it up in some random bar onto someone you've only known for barely a day.

"I grew up way in the Western Provinces, though I suppose that's pretty obvious, in a mid-sized city called Westmire. I can't complain about life growing up, my father was a busy man but my mother was around enough, I got a pretty good education, and it was looking like I'd be well on my way to getting into the city's Artificer Guild. Of course, there's a reason why I'm here now and not there; Westmire no longer exists. It got wiped off the map by a major Blight insurrection".

Sierra flinches at your words, and you really can't blame her, "I was lucky enough to get out before the city guard was overrun and even more lucky that a family I was friendly with had survived as well. We traveled all the way to a pretty major port city called Airgid. They had somewhat distant family there, and were kind enough to employ me for a time. I worked with them for a while, then broke off on my own about two months ago. I wandered about, and then started to head East. Three weeks later, and here I am".

You work on finishing your food while Sierra visibly processes all that you've said.

It's at this point that you notice there's a full bottle of whiskey on the country. When's the last time you've seen whiskey? It's sounding pretty tempting right now.

You manage to resist the urge to just drown out any meaningful conversation under hard liquor. Sierra looks like she wants to respond to your spiel.

So you give her a moment to gather her thoughts. She doesn't keep you waiting.

"I'm an elf, so I've lived a pretty long life - and don't you dare make a joke about that" When she realizes that you've got a serious expression on your face, she drops the glare, "So I won't bore you with every minute of it. But, something similar to me happened, I suppose. It wasn't a direct attack like it was with you, though, it took close to a year before we had to leave. See, somehow, Blight started to corrupt the interior of our forest. We would have sent in our best Hunter to clean out the infestation before it spread further, but he went missing a year or so beforehand. So we had to settle for sending in other, less experienced elves to try to do the same. What a mess that was... It happened like clockwork, every time a hunter would get anywhere near the contamination, we'd lose contact with them. A few days later, we'd either find their corpse, they'd vanish entirely, or... they'd come back as something twisted and corrupt. We ended up watching as the Blight completely took over our home; the few of us that were left broke off in different directions. I made my way over here and worked until I could set up my own bar" Sierra pats the bar counter.

You look down at your finished bowl. The odds were good that she'd omitted certain details just like you had, but the story was rough nonetheless. The only real thing you could do was move forward from this.

So, now what do you do?

You motion towards the bottle on the counter, and she reflexively reaches below the counter to grab two small glasses. She must be really out of it, since she really doesn't react at all until you pop the cork off the bottle.

She goes to protest, but you gently cut her off, "Now now, we've both had a long day, so how about a toast to end it".

"Okay?" Sierra seems slightly confused at your actions, but doesn't stop you from pouring out two shots. She does look a bit surprised when you push one of the glasses towards her, but recovers quickly, "So, what are we toasting to?"

Well, crap. You didn't exactly think of that.

It's a simple affair, but at least the bed is Western in origin so you don't have to worry about sleeping on a brick. You strongly consider just passing out fully clothed on top of the coarse sheets, but routine dictates that you strip down to your underclothes before anything else. You throw your clothes onto a nearby chair so you can use them tomorrow, crawl under the covers, and quickly fall asleep.

...

Your night is blessedly dreamless, though you still wake up shortly after sunrise out of sheer habit. Rubbing the last vestiges of sleep out of your eyes, you get up from your bed.

First things first, you should really check over your belongings. Surprisingly enough, you find a few Silver and Copper Coins on the small, wooden desk. There's a note alongside them:

> This is your portion of the tips I got from the guards
> - Sierra

> You have obtained Two (2) Silver Coins!
> You have obtained Fourteen (14) Copper Coins!

Well, that was kind of her, especially since you completely forgot to ask about the discrepancy between toil and reward with that 'second job'.

Putting the money away, you now have:
> One (1) Heavy Cloak with Hood
> One (1) Concealed Dagger
> Two (2) Changes of Clothing
> Eighteen (18) Silver Coins
> Nineteen (19) Copper Coins
> Zero (0) Ration Packs

Your coin pouch is considerably heavier than when you entered town, though your supplies are still bone dry.

Satisfied with the status of your belongings for the time being, you get dressed, gather your belongings, and head downstairs.

Sierra is already up and hard at work, several people who you assume are regulars are about enjoying their breakfast. Surprisingly enough, there's a few guards in here. You immediately recognize the look of someone who's spent the entire night awake; they must be apart of the night watch.

Regardless, you slide up to the bar and, since you two are square, slide Sierra three copper for a breakfast of your own. She easily takes your money and goes to the back room. A few minutes later, a light breakfast of eggs and cured meat is placed in front of you. You nod your thanks and dig in. Again, it's not the best food in the world, but it's hot and fresh and doesn't taste like dried sand going down your throat.

You wait for a moment where Sierra isn't too busy and ask her where the nearest General Store is. She tells you of one close by on the Southeastern side of town. You thank her for the information and finish up your meal.

Grabbing your rutsack, you head out of the bar's doors and onto the street.

You decide that you're really in no rush today. If Sierra had a job for you, you're sure she would have mentioned it to you. So, with time to spare in plenty, you decide to take a nice, long stroll.

Starting at the dead South, you make your way around the town clockwise. All in all, the place is a dusty shit hole. Though, you have to admit, being out here has been interesting so far. Well, mostly irritating and aggravating with how many people have given you crap over your eyes and hair. You have gotten to work on plenty of magitech, so that's a benefit in all this.

Regardless, your stroll through town is mostly uneventful. The occasional guard gives you the same old look, but you live. You think you see one still trying to get dirt off his armor, but that could just be any other guard that's irrationally angry at you.

Oops.

Your walk picks up when you make it to the Northern side of town. The people who live here probably have a few different names for it, but you immediately note it as 'ghetto' and continue on your way. Straight through it. You're so used to working amongst the dirt and grime of Airgid that you don't really register your situation until you realize there's about three guys following you.

All you need is Dutch standing besides you and it would be like you never left in the first place. Since you're down a man, you can't do your usual strategy and so you're forced to simply duck into a few alleyways and lose them that way. It's all old hat for you at this point and two minutes later you're on your way further to the store.

[1/2]
>>
>>1726177

The place Sierra recommended to you is similar to her own; done up in that same Western/Eastern hybrid fashion. Oh well, at least the door isn't made of paper.

Making no attempt to hide yourself, you simply walk in.

There's a man working the counter, but he only stops reading from a book long enough to raise an eyebrow at your entrance. He's back to lazily reading a moment later.

Thankfully, there's a simple sign up on the wall detailing set prices.

It reads:
> Ration Packs, Five (5) Copper Coins each

You decide to take a poke around the store to see what's not normally in stock.

It's a damn good thing you decided to check. The guy running this place must have a kind of scrap operation on the side, because he's got a bucket full of crap. You gleefully jump right in, and hit the paydirt almost immediately.

Well, you say paydirt; someone else evidently thought this was a piece of shit. And part of you agrees, it's pretty much past repair. But, still, to find a Magitech Gauntlet this far out is a rarity. The thing is rusted to all hell, and is missing a power source, but maybe you could build a gauntlet from scratch based on this thing.

When you bring it up to the guy at the counter, he simply asks you if you're buying anything else. You tell him of the 75 cp worth of supplies you want and he fishes them out. The final deal is 80 cp for everything. You think you just robbed this man blind, he thinks he finally got rid of a rusted hunk of junk; everyone walks away happy.

It's around noon now, but you're still running off the high of finding piece of Magitech.
So, you decide to take another walk; at least you have the intelligence to not walk through the ghetto again.

You take your time, but there's really only so many circles you can walk in before you end up returning to Sierra's Bar. Just like last night, there's some kind of racket going on inside, but you don't hear the sound of anything breaking; just people shouting this time. You decide to walk in and see what's going on.

"-telling you guys, I'm being serious here!" Immediately catching your eye is a young man, probably close to your own age, standing around a group of people. Half of them look extremely interested in what he has to say, about a quarter of them evidently think he's full of shit, and the remainder don't seem to care either.

"Bullshit, Jun, there's no way you found a fresh Ruin around here. This place has been picked clean" One of the people who aren't believing him throws his hand out in a dismissive manner.

"I ain't joking with ya'll! It's really, really there! It's Northwest of town!"

It's at this moment that you realize that no one here has noticed you walk in, aside from Sierra who's looking at you with a vaguely questioning look. It's entirely possible that this guy is joshing everyone here for a laugh. But, the implications of a fresh Ruin to investigate bite at your inquisitive side.

The temptation to run off and race to find the Ruin is there, but you realize that you don't actually know where it is, only a vague direction at best, so you walk in instead.

As anticipated, a few of the guys who are bored listening to what's most likely a massive load of bull turn as you move. They, however, don't do more than nod to you, which you return.

Walking around the crowd, you make your way to the bar where Sierra is looking at you questioningly.

"What?" You ask after it gets a bit awkward.

"You heard what that kid's said, what do you think of all of this?"

Thinking for a bit, it's not hard to come up with an answer, "It's probably a bunch of shit, but it might be worth looking into. The possibility of a fresh Ruin is almost none in these parts, but it's not null". You shrug to her, "We'll just have to see where things go".

You're apparently a prophet, because almost the instant that you finish your sentence, 'Jun' speaks up.

"Hey! Ain't you that Artificer that came into town the other day? Yeah, the Westerner some of the guards have been talking about" He pushes past a few people to get to you; you turn in your seat to regard him but don't say anything, "C'mon, what do you say? What worries you, though, is that he doesn't seem to be lying about their being a ruin or him being in it. How he came to know you over the course of a day beats you, but that really doesn't matter.

What matters right now is what your response is to his request.

A quick look to the side and Sierra gives you a shrug. You're evidently on your own for this decision.

So, what'll it be?

"I accept, though just give a minute to get my gear in order"

Jun looks absolutely giddy at your response, eliciting some hard looks from the regulars around you.

Still, you grab your pack and move for the door. The young man follows you, though he makes a confused noise at you not heading in the same direction as you.

You quickly make your way to a shop that sells weapons, walk in, and about fifteen seconds later walk out with a simple broadsword.

It's been ages since you've used one, but you still remember a bit of how they work. Pointy end that way.

You have obtained:
> One (1) Simple Quality Broadsword!

You have lost:
> Two (2) Silver Coins!

You had to pay a bit more than you'd like, but you're in a rush here. If you want to get to the Ruins before word really gets out of their existence, you need to be fast.

Jun leads you out of town and straight into the thick of things. It's not an easy hike, but living on the road for a while has toughened you up to the point where that doesn't deter you at all.

He makes no move to speak to you, and you don't either. You still don't trust him, and as if to prove your point, Sierra's voice suddenly flows into your head. It's a weird sensation to be sure, you can hear her at the same time the words are being pushed into your brain. Still, the information you get outweighs the discomfort.

> Don't trust him
> Didn't tell anyone about you being under my employ yet
> - Sierra

You keep your guard up for sure, now, and keep Jun always within your vision.

It's been probably close to two hours since you set out. You're find, though Jun looks a bit rough; he's starting to have sweat drip down his face.

Your patience is apparently going to be rewarded today, as you can see the broken down stones of a Ruin slowly appearing in the distance.

Now, you feel, is an appropriate time to start asking about how you're going to share what loot there might be.

Though, right as you open your mouth as you're passing through the last bit of shrubbery, Jun tries to wait until you pass.

Your instincts kick in and you burst out into the clearing, just narrowly avoiding the man grabbing your shoulder. He's got a knife palmed in his other hand as well, so you put another step between you and reach to where your broadsword is being kept against your back.

The second you put your hand on the blade, around ten men practically materialize out of the forest. They're in a half-circle surrounding you and pinning you against the Ruin. Armed with swords and spears, they've effectively cut off any hope of retreat.

And, lastly, you can hear someone approaching out of the ruins behind you.

Fucking hell today is not your day.

That's it for Quest #1 lads, it's been a great time playing with you all. Some very interesting rolls made me change up quite a few times, but I think it all worked out nicely despite 90% of this being off the cuff. I'll be on for a while longer to answer any question you might have. And, yes, I will get a Twitter to let you all know when the next one is.

I already know what I want to happen in the second session, and it won't need to be as long as this (seriously this was a long ass intro into the story) to get to where it needs to be. I'll have a Twitter made soon enough, so you can use that to know when we're live.

Good thread so far. I would think that the people that surround us want to use us for our knowledge in magic tech.

>"Hey! Ain't you that Artificer that came into town the other day? Yeah, the Westerner some of the guards have been talking about" He pushes past a few people to get to you; you turn in your seat to regard him but don't say anything, "C'mon, what do you say? Wanna get your hands on something really interesting? I didn't really take a hard look through the ruins, but I saw some mighty shinny things in there!"

Since he did know that we are a artificer so he could want to use us to make something.

Magitech just seem like our modern day things just using magic to power them.

Like that magitech engine, or the lights. Also they are used to improve on ability
>>
>>1726772

Alright, I suppose I can do that.

>>1727022

It depends on the magitech though >>1727032 is correct in that a lot of it is just modern tech with magic powering it. As for the gauntlet, it would be better to think of that as a blueprint for making Magitech Gauntlet Frames. If you guys make sure to use it as a basis for building a gauntlet later on, you will be bumping your modifier from a 5 to a 20.

You bite your lip. Seriously, you're feeling like an absolute amateur at the moment.

It's clear that you're dealing with seasoned bandits here and you, like an idiot, let yourself get played like a fiddle. None of them seem to be in a hurry to do anything other than box you in, so there's that going for you.

At this point in time, your main concern is who's coming up behind you. Tightening your grip on your sword, you slowly turn around.

Out of the darkness comes one of the only people in the area who is taller than you. It's not by much, but it still puts you on edge. What catches your eye is that he's not only wearing an eyepatch, but he's not armed with a sword or spear like the other men. Instead, he's got a metal chain wrapped around one forearm and what looks to be some kind of sickle attached to the end.

When he opens his mouth, it becomes even more obvious that this man is the head honcho around. "Haha ha, welcome, Westerner, to an opportunity of a lifetime," He even gives you a mocking bow, "A chance to investigate an untouched Ruin! Well, we've been through the surface chambers, but the rest of it is fresh I guarantee".

You're fairly certain that, again, you're being told the truth. But, you got into this situation due to the truth.

"Now, now, there's no need to scowl," He continues, "How about we strike up a deal? I'd rather have you alive than dead, after all. So, here's how things will go: we're going to guide you through the Ruins, you're going to identify what artifacts we find, we'll take the good stuff, and you can have... the rest. What do ya say?"

He's smugly grinning at you at this point.

What do you do?
> Accept the deal
> Reject the deal
>>
>>1727672
Accept, but be careful, I feel like they'll still try to kill us in the end.
Also, I'd advise rolling some slight-of-hand checks later on to swipe some good stuff while no one is looking.

"I'd have done this even if you'd just asked nicely. If I get to play with artifacts and magitech I'm not picky about my company."

"I'll accept if we alter the terms slightly," You begin, almost fearlessly. The somewhat surprised look on the leader's face, that gets quickly squashed, tells you that no ones ever tried to negotiate a deal with him, ""I get to take first pick. One item, at my discretion and definition of what is considered one item. Besides, I am fairly certain you are just going to murder me regardless. So I want a guarantee that neither you, nor any of the members of your group or party will attempt to harm me in regards to this now, during, or after we go into the ruins."

The man raises a hand to his face and scratches at a bit of his stubble. For a moment, what might be respect crosses his face, but it's now gone and replaced with a smirk, "I'll admit it, you've got balls for trying to wheedle in this situation. But, no, you're not getting anything good out of this. However, in the interest of both of our futures, I swear on my honor that you will not be harmed or killed, so long as you drop that sword of yours and let one of my boys search that pack. Depending on what we find in here, I might need you later on for repairs and the like. So, what'll it be?"

There's really no way out of this but forwards, and you've pushed your luck far enough already.

"Alright, I'll accept," You say as you unclasp the latch holding the sheath to your pack. It clatters into the dirt with a dull noice, and your rutsack joins it soon after. As part of the deal, you walk several paces away as 'Jun' walks up to your belongings.

"You know, if you'd just asked me to join you all I'd have done it," You offhandedly remark to the leader while you wait, "I'm more interested in magitech and the like to care about the company around me".

"And you'd have forced me to give you part of the loot and silver for your troubles," The man responds with a grin, "Just like you just tried to here".

You shrug, "You're not gonna fault me for trying, will you? Anyways, what's in there that you're willing to kidnap an artificer for help?"

It's the man's turn to shrug, "Who knows? That's why you're here".

'Jun' seems to finish searching your bag, "Hey, Boss, looks like our intel was right on the guy. Nothin' in here but clothes, some supplies, some coin, and..." He's been rooting around pulling up the items into view as he's called them out, when he gets to the rusted hunk of a Gauntlet you picked up earlier in the day.

Everyone slowly turns to look at you like you're mad, but you just put your hands in your pockets and stare them back down.

"Anyways... No weapons, no ID; he's just some wanderer" 'Jun' finishes up and, after a signal from 'Boss', throws you back your bag. He does keep the sword, but it feels a bit useless in this situation anyways.

Without waiting, the leader turns around and walks back into the Ruin. You follow behind him, with 'Jun' right behind you, and all of you walk into the depths.

Walking through the Ruins, it become extremely apparent that these bandits were probably once a military unit. 'Jun' watches you like a hawk the entire time, whenever you stop to examine something there's one of them on each side of you making sure you don't try to pull anything. And you don't.

The entire place is a bit of a letdown if you're being honest. Every once and a while, you'll find a side room or something similar that'll have a a bit of armor or a weapon, but there's really nothing that piques your interest. You explain to the Boss what each piece does, though almost every time your explanation involves a lengthy repair process or a new power source. He takes your reports in stride, placing the artifacts into a sack, and you all continue on your way.

At one point during your journey, you notice a strange box in a corner. No one else seems to look at it besides yourself and the leader makes no motion for you to look at it. It tugs at your curiosity, but you keep up with the group regardless. Maybe, when you're done with this you can come back and take a look.

You've been walking for a while, further and further down, when the passage opens up into a large, dark room. The basic torches that the bandits have been using manage to push it back slightly, but all you really notice are a few crates somewhat closer to you and what might be something reflecting the light back at you all the way in the back.

You all pause for a moment, but the group begins to walk into the room fully. That's when one of the torches get's far enough and something on the floor catches your eye.

"Stop!" You shout out, and all the men instinctively freeze at your outburst. Easily navigating between the ones in front of you, you drop down onto a knee right in front of what you say. It's barely there, but you can see something etched into the floor.

You immediately rifle through your belongings and pull out a spare sock. Extremely carefully, you begin to dab away at the layer of dust on the floor.

It's a good choice to make, because something that's clearly geometric in shape comes into focus after a bit of work.

"What do you see, kid?" The Leader walks up next to you, trying to peer over your shoulder.

"I... I'm not sure," You feel like this is familiar somehow, though you can't remember where. Your confusion only grows when you unearth yet another strange shape directly next to it. Both are nearly identical, and are carved straight into the floor. Slightly in frustration, you drag the sock down back towards you, and uncover what looks to be a line directly in front of your feet.

Jumping slightly at how close it is, you move along the line. It's a bit easier than you thought it would be, because the line isn't actually straight it's curved.

And that's when the alarm bells in your head go off. There's a slight curve to it from where you are now and were the Boss is standing where you were previously. Hours upon hours of studying Geometry click into your brain and you make a rough guess of just how big this circle is.

The end result makes you jump to your feet.

"Everyone get back! Seriously, get back!" The slight hint of panic in your voice is cause for alarm, and even the leader looks concerned.

"It's... it's a Rune, a Sigil, a Glyph, something! Just don't step anywhere further!"

"Easy, kid, what kind of Rune; where is it?" The man sounds worried at what's going on.

"I don't know. But, I know how big it is"

"How big is it then?"

You don't say anything, you simply point out into the darkness and trace your finger in a rough circle. Almost to a man do the bandits pale as you move your hand from one side of the room to the other.

Any further questions, however, are cut off as you hear footsteps coming from the passage way behind you. True to your observations, the bandits move to encircle the entrance immediately while the Leader steps forward to confront whoever it is.

'Whoever' ends up being a rather large force of the city guard; and not the mudfeet, you've got guys here that are loaded for bear. Some of them have magitech lamps, turned up higher than the torches could.

The light blinds you slightly, so you take a step back and turn away. You get a nice view of the rows upon rows of weapons and armor on display further in. This place must have been a fortress at some point long ago, and the gear here reflects that.

You turn back just in time to see the leader of the guards walk forward and open his mouth.

"Kill them all, no witnesses. No one can know what our town now possesses".

Things have officially gone pear shaped. You have no idea what complex web of betrayals and bribery is going on.

You just want to live through the next five minutes.

So you sprint your ass towards the nearest corner and dive behind a nicely placed crate. No one's given a shit about you, since the two groups of heavily armed, highly trained hostiles are now laying into each other hand and teeth.

Things appear to be pretty even, with the Boss and the leader of the guards squaring off in the middle of the chaos. Five seconds later, that changes as one of the guards gets a lucky kick onto one of the bandit's stomach's, causing him to stumble back.

The guard presses his advantage, slowly forcing his opponent to take a step back each time his spear comes around for another stab.

It's over in another three seconds, as the bandit gurgles from the spear time catching him in the throat. Another bandit slams into the guard's side, forcing him to abandon the weapon for a short sword.

But that doesn't matter to you. You watch as, if in slow motion, the dying bandit pitches backwards and falls straight past where you were previously.

Your blood turns to ice as the instant blood drips onto the floor, what looks like bright red first ignites around the entirety of where you estimated the Rune would be.

The fighting stops, and all the men stare in stunned silence as magical pressure floods the room. You can actually taste the horrible corrupt nature of the blood magic rising to a fever pitch in the room.

You duck down behind the crate less than a second before everything explodes and everything goes black.

...

A sound makes you realize that you're not unconscious. It's the sound of bone snapping, a guttural scream following it.

Risking it, you peak over the crate to see what happened.

Somehow, someway, Blight covers the room aside from your little corner. One of the guards, somehow not dead from the explosion, is screaming for help as his body is being slowly dragged away into the darkness.

But you don't react at all to that. Your ears start ringing and your vision goes to static and everything is spinning and when it finally clears you find yourself in your worst nightmares.

You find yourself back in Westmire.

That same, black stone road that you've traveled so many times is underneath you. Looking up, the black night sky stares back down at you without a star to break up the darkness.

The smell of burning homes and bodies scalds your nose, the sound of men, women, and child being rip from limb to limb like matches and the screams, the screams that they make assaults your ears, and looking down you can only see a pair of pale, lightly calloused hands.

This confuses you, because you know your hands by heart at this point. You know of the scars and thick callouses that come from the endless hours you spent toiling away at a new life just so you could put this madness behind you. But, they're missing all that. Missing the scrapes and the crooked finger from where you broke it and it never healed right and the dark dirt that never seems to get out of your palms. You pull down your sleeves and you can't find the electrical and magical burns that were inflicted on you during your earliest days working nor can you find the long, thin cuts that you sustained from all the times you had to fight some asshole with a knife in a dark alley.

This all confuses you, because you're John and you're supposed to have dirty, wounded hands and scarred arms because that's what makes you John and they're the proof that you've put so much work into your life.

And then it hits you that you're Not John. You're Not John because your skin is clean and smooth and you're in a panic because you're missing the control that you have as John but you're Not John and that scares you because it's been so long since you've been Not John.

The memory comes back to you now, that you're Not John but it's okay because you'll be John again soon enough because in approximately seven minutes you'll get that wound against your back that itches on rainy days and that never healed over entirely no matter how many Medical Mages you went to because some horrible monster with too many eyes and too many limbs and too many sharp bits is going to jump you as you're running, running away and away with what few people haven't already been cornered like trapped rats and Dutch is there and now Dutch is screaming at you because you're being pinned to the ground by something with too many eyes and too ma-

The searing pain of your back being torn open and the Blight burning away at your flesh makes you want to scream because it hurts so, so much but you take a strange comfort in the fact that this'll put you into a coma for a month but it's fine because when you wake up again you'll be on your way to becoming John again and you really enjoy being John.

Suddenly, you feel dizzy. Your vision turns to static and the memory that haunts your nightmares for so long finally fades.

You wake up, propped up against that same crate that defended you from the Blight in the first place as sweat is pouring down your face. Something aches, and you look down to see that you must have smashed your fist against the floor. The pain pulses for a few more seconds before the adrenaline that hits your bloodstream takes the edge off.

Pushing yourself to your feet, a quick look around the room tells you all you need to know: you're the only person left alive in this room. Blight covers literally everything, making the room a kind of pitch black void. The sight makes your vision swim and you need to hold yourself up so you don't pass out again.

Taking a few breaths, you steady yourself. Making sure there's nothing around you currently, you take off running through the Blight.

Your boots are tough enough that the black ichor doesn't burn through the fabric, thankfully, and it thins out as you get into the passage way again. It's still there, worryingly enough, and you wonder just how long you've been unconscious for.

You need to go, now:

You take off at a sprint to where you remember the Toolbox is. You remember the way well enough, and it doesn't take you long to grab the thing. It's thankfully been untouched by the Blight, though you stuff it into your pack to make sure it won't get damaged.

Making your way back to the entrance, you notice that the Blight is slowly corrupting the forest around you. The Sun is off setting behind you, so you've definitely been down there for far, far too long.

It took you and 'Jun' a bit over two hours to hike from the town to the Ruin.

You sprint it in about 45 mins. Being held up by almost nothing but adrenaline at this point, you transition into a brisk walk as you enter town.

At some point, you got past the spread of the Blight going through the forest. But, now, you don't feel any better as you walk down the main street of what could easily be a ghost town. There's not a person in sight, and you can't see any movement coming from any of the buildings around you.

It's disturbing, and you move as fast as you can to Sierra's Bar.

Not bothering with subtlety, you fly through the front doors to see that the bar is empty. It looks like everyone just up and left sometime before you got there. Nothing's been ransacked, so whatever happened, Sierra should still be around.

"Sierra... Sierra!" You shout out, trying to figure out what happened.

You hear movement above you, before the elf in question comes flying down the stairs.

"John? John, what happened we were all just waiting for you to get back when the entire town got placed under lock down and holy shit John what the hell happened to you!?" She seems to get a good look at you mid sentence and you can't help but feel about as bad as you probably look.

"Grab what you can carry with yoy, it took most of the forest already, we need to leave NOW!!"
>>
>>1729213

Sierra reaches out to check to make sure you're not seriously hurt, but you grab her wrist.

It's the first time you've actually touched her, and she looks shocked at your actions.

"Blight... it's the Blight, it was made in the Ruin, it's already taken most of the Northeastern forest, so grab what you can carry because we need to leave *now*" The amount of forced calm in your voice unsettles the elf, but she doesn't respond to you because she's already slipped out of your grip and is sprinting back upstairs.

You grab a chair and collapse into it, your muscles screaming at you because you've stopped moving and your brain can finally catch up to what you've done today.

The moment of reprieve lasts barely a minute before your back starts to itch once again and you feel the ground beneath you shudder.

Whatever's leading this incursion just hit the outer perimeter. Westmire, with its walls and small army of guards lasted under an hour before being completely overrun. This shithole will last maybe ten minutes if you're lucky.

You're about to yell up at Sierra to hurry the hell up when someone breaks down the front door.

There's a pretty nondescript guy who rushes in, a bandana covering his mouth. Your body groans at you as you force yourself to your feet. The man lowers his head and lunges to spear you. You don't have the strength to dodge.

It's been a long time since you've been in a scrap like this.

Doesn't mean you don't remember what to do. Since you can't avoid his reckless charge, you plant a foot behind you and brace yourself. He hits you right as the adrenaline spike hits your bloodstream and aside from getting pushed back an inch it accomplishes jack shit.

The man probably looked surprised that you barely moved, but you couldn't see his face at the moment. Bringing both of your arms up, your drive your elbows into his back and his arms loosen from around your waist.

It gives you enough room to take both of his shoulders into your hands and ram your knee straight into his face.

There's a loud crack as you're pretty sure you just broke his jaw. He's out like a light, however, because you holding him meant that he couldn't roll with the blow at all.

Two more guys in similar dress to him run through the door just as you let his limp body collapse to the floor. Sierra runs down the stairs shortly after.

You turn and start running towards the back of the bar. Sierra has apparently gotten the message, as she doesn't say anything and holds the back door open for you.

The two of you burst into what's a strange combination of pantry, kitchen, and oven, though you don't get a good look at anything because you're both through there in a matter of seconds.

Bursting out onto the streets, it's absolute pandemonium. People are running each and every way, some with nothing and some try to take everything.

For a moment you're unsure of where you should go.

Then your taxed mind comes up with a solution.

You grab Sierra's arm again and start making your way South. It's a good idea that you did, because the streets are flooded with people in a panic and if it wasn't for the physical link between the two of you you'd never get through this together.

Then you realize an even better course of action.

"Sierra!" You have to shout to make yourself heard over the screaming, "Send Goo Hwi one of those messages!"

"I can't move my body while I'm sending i-!!" Her protests are cut off as you bodily pick her up and throw her over your shoulder.

At the present time, she barely feels like she weighs anything at all, though you can feel the increase as she conks out to use her telepathy causes her to become dead weight.

You burst out of the Southern gate and start to pick up speed as you're now on an open trail.

And it's because your body is begging you to stop. Your limbs feel like lead, your lungs burn, and you're sweating like a madman.

But you don't stop, because you can't. That's all there is to it.

You still feel like absolute shit, none the less.

Another passage of time that you don't really process, and your rounding that familiar corner to Goo Hwi's 'home'.

Thankfully, he's already there waiting for you, evidently having taken Sierra's message to heart.

"Goo Hwi!" She talks for you because you're far too focus on not collapsing where you stand currently, "We've got some time, but not much at all".

The old man looks at you and frowns, before turning back to the elf, "I know, I just wanted to finish preparations. Oh, though I did grab something for you both on my way out".

You have obtained:
> 1 Good Quality Broadsword!

"I would have liked to have put some more work into it," He starts talking again, "But there's no more time. Sierra, do it".

She looks shocked at his demand, "You can't be serious".

"I am" The look on Goo Hwi's face is brutal, all ice and determination.

Numbly, Sierra raises a hand, and a ball of flame shoots out of it, impacting against a wooden wall. Against normal fire, the wood would have maybe been scorched at worst, but Sierra's fire has the wall burning in seconds.

"I dedicate this pyre," Goo Hwi speaks up, his head bowed in prayer, "To those who I have left behind".

The temple burns, and there's a crushing silence aside from the crackle and snap of fire.

Then, someone says to leave and you do. Your ears are ringing again, so you can't hear much aside from the pumping of your own heart.

You're exhausted, nearly deaf, and can't think entirely straight.

Thankfully, your intuition is completely separate from those three things.

So when something comes bursting out of the brush from behind you, you've already got your newly acquired Broadsword in hand and slashing away whatever is there.

It nimbly moves out of the arc and backwards, where it meets up with two other figures.

Their movements immediately tell you that they're no longer human, but you immediately recognize the bandit leader, 'Jun', and the only guard you saw survive the explosion.

As they step out into the open, you can see exactly what you were expecting. Blight clings to their skin and weapons, tying them together in ways that cause the three to move in strange, shambling motions.

You know that Sierra and Goo Hwi are behind you, prepping for a fight. You do too, as you don't have the energy or the confidence to turn your back on the Boss' chain and sickle.

You ride the next adrenaline spike like a wave, surging forwards.

There's a bright orange light that flies by you, missing you by maybe a foot. The Boss ducks away from the attack, only to run straight into yours. Cutting into him just feels wrong, flesh not parting before the blade like it should. Still, your attack draws a howl of pain and rage from him.

You see the chain coming, and easily duck the first pass. He's winding up to attack again when there's a blur of motion to your right and suddenly the guard is a bloody smear against a tree.

Catching the barest glimpse of Goo Hwi wearing knuckle to elbow metal gauntlets as you fall back, he's gone in the next instance. Unfortunately, 'Jun' is far more agile than any human has any right to be, so he bends out of the way of a strike that should have blown him in half. You know you only have seconds left of being conscious.

And you make them count.

Jumping to your feet, you twist out of the way of another attack, it just barely missing you as you force your beaten down body to just move for this last bit longer.

Your Broadsword is there sticking out of the mud and you somehow easily pull it out of the ground. Lunging forwards, you don't even bother to dodge the second strike of the chain, as a stream of fire lights him up to the point where the metal snaps from the stress mid-swing. It goes flying over your head, but that doesn't even come close to your attention. Gripping the blade as tightly as you can, you force it into and through his weakened neck. The Blight is all that's keeping it up, and then that becomes moot because Goo Hwi comes out of no where and punches his head into oblivion from your sword up.

He's obviously already dealt with 'Jun', and it now occurs to you that you're alive and everyone's alive and that you're safe and that you're passing out as you stand.

Your body hits the ground with a dull thud, the exhaustion of the entire day crippling you. You think you hear someone calling out to you, but you dismiss it as another nightmare and try to push it away.

>>

Pretty good, the blight is scary. Just the way I like it.
>>
>>1729787

Good to hear; there's nothing more aggravating for me than when I read a story and the main threat doesn't feel like an actual threat at all.
>>

>The old man looks at you
is he lying about being blind?
or is this a typo?
>>
>>1729817

That's not a typo. Think of it this way: he didn't open his eyes, but he still turned and angled his face down at you.
>>
>>1729808
Where will our new adventure be? So other "not Chinese" town?
>>
>>1729829

Quest #3 will begin on the road. You're in for quite a bit of a recovery period, with how hard you stressed your body back there. From there, I do believe, since quite a few people would like to get to making magitech of our own, we'll be heading towards a city of sorts. Who know's what we'll find there?
>>
>>1729835
Good night OP
It was a good thread I can't wait what will be in store for us.
>>
could we become infected and become a plague mage? interesting if we want to go the corrupt route

and the two natives have proven useful, lets see where we go from here
>>
>>1730048
One is native.

It's sad what happened to their livelihood, elf bar/inn that she work so hard on is being taken over by the blight. The old man temple is up in flames the ashes taken over by the blight.

But at least we're alive, all thanks to us.
>>
>>1730056

true but I have a few other ideas

oh god heres a thought. to become ultimate artificer litch mode or something like that, or even a god like being. we have to kill out new friend and the elf. its a overdone cliché and rather common, but this is a grim dark world. hell maybe to stop it there are thre sacrifices needed, but only we can do the sacrificing. oh gods that's horrible and I want to do it.

first the old man, then the elf and then us........grim dark to the max
>>
>>1730048

Well, you'd have to learn magic first, which is a bit outside of your specializations, and then you'd have to be corrupted and manage to resist the Blight crushing your consciousness.

In all honesty, it sounds like a cool idea, but if anything it should be a completely different Quest.
>>
>>1730339
maybe, but still I can make jokes about grim derp...... okay maybe I enjoy watching people fret and try to choose a lesser evil. but not for this quest, got it
>>
>>1730344

Yep, you can. We've already got a guy who wants pirates in this, so welcome to the club. And that's not to say there won't be tough choices coming up, I'm just saying that perhaps becoming a plague Mage wouldn't make too much sense for John. But, maybe, someone else in this setting might want to become one...
>>
>>1730359
oh no..............I have a feeling I have just done the stupidest thing I could have done in this situation.

and I'm not to sad about not being plague mage, it should make sense I just enjoy the idea john can control the super fearful force of the setting, power fantasy. and the pirates are retarded and hilarious but again not for the setting.

now I'm imagining going to the sea and john just sees a parrot on someones shoulder
>>
>>1730371
what would be better is to make electro shock
collars for the blight infected and just drive them towards our enemies.
>>
>>1730398
hmmm, I like it but we would have to go to a tainted place and leash em. maybe do it to scum and bandits?
>>
>>1730407
well we just need a bit of taint to start, nothing says we can't infect the uninfected.
>>
>>1729835
>You're in for quite a bit of a recovery period

That's fine it makes us able to work on the gaulet we got for ourselfs.
>>
>>1730410
do this in lab conditions [in a secret mountain fortress with a evil laugh] and make our morals very very grey and you have my vote

>>1730418
true, but lets dismantle it and then put it back together clean. better knowledge that way
>>
>>1730418
>>1730419

I'll clarify this now, that Gauntlet you found is not in repairable condition. You can dismantle it bit by bit to gain a better understanding of how to build one of your own, but trying to get it back into working condition would require you replacing all the parts so just making one from scratch would be easier.

>>1730398
>>1730407
>>1730410

Remember that out of the close to two dozen people that were caught in that explosion, only three ended up becoming Corrupted; the Blight just flat out consumed the others.
>>
>>1730424
That is fine. Still it will be more usefull then just not doing anything while we recover.
>>
>>1730426

Yep. Beating that DC 90 got you an item that will quadruple your modifier for building Magitech Gauntlets once you're done picking it apart.
>>
>>1730424
>Remember that out of the close to two dozen people that were caught in that explosion, only three ended up becoming Corrupted; the Blight just flat out consumed the others.

And we managed to not die to it again. John had a hard life..
>>
>>1730431

John is a very lucky man; just not in ways that actually improve his life.
>>
>>1730430
Oh forgot about our new tools it get us a time to work with then too.
>>
>>1730433

Ironic that the best piece of loot anyone got in that dungeon was once a maintenance worker's toolbox.
>>
>>1730432
Just a question how many people survive a blight. How should we call it?infestation? More then once?
>>
>>1730437
You call it Ironic i call it fate. The tools were just looking for a new owner to use then. Now in our hands they will be usefull once more.
>>
>>1730438

What the Anons who helped me build this quest decided on was a kind of cataclysmic-level plague that also has a kind of malicious backing to it. The Blight is what I made that idea into.

The Blight began millennia ago, only a few years after the Age of Gods ended.
>>
>>1730447
Also, can we not forest the fact that we still have to build our own golem? Still think we should focus on golem magictech using our gauntlet once we get it fixed and learn how to golem shit up.
>>
>>1730565
I agree, however the gauntlet must be dissected to help push us along our path
>>
>>1730570
That's very true so first thing on the list is fixing the gauntlet and then learning about transmutation via magictech to create our golem.
Also I've realized that golems would be extremely helpful as the blight mainly effects living things so we'll be able to do several things with our golem.
>>
Why are we even discussing evil overlord antics anyway? I didn't even know that we are evil nor insane.

Like, I was pretty sure we're supposed to be a hero, yeah?
>>
>>1730615
It's a grim dark fantasy setting so being a hero turn this quest into a noble dark setting and turning into a villan into a grimdark setting.

i would rather be the hero but if i'm out voted there isn't much we can do about it.
>>
>>1730615
>>1730641
Yeah, I'd like to do a hero's quest this time but I'm totally up for doing a plague mage next quest.
>>
>>1730641
No, why are you trying to force this into a tiny little box? dark fantasy, noble dark, grimdark, just forget all that shit and play the character.
>>
>>1730655
Easy friend i know what i did can look like a limited way of playing but my main point was that whatever the most of players agree to do i will be omay to gp with it.
>>
>>1730615
There's no guarantee its evil though. What if we just used bandits and folk on death row to fight other infected.
They have clearly shown super human ability so why not fight fire with fire?
>>
>>1730678

> Wew lads
>>

I mean, what if it's simply a planar aberration or eldritch horror that need hugs? It doesn't HAVE to be an ancient biological weapon. What if it's just a control specimen that left the friendly neighbourhood Umbrella Corp. lab and went for a walk and can't find its way home?

We can fuck anything as long as it has a surface for our dick to ride on.

But we can't do it yet so the blight burns through shit. So we need to put our dick through much training, and get some endurance and magic shielding for our dick or it will burn up like our hopes and dreams.

[ARTIFICER QUEST PART 3 START]

You're in what's, thankfully, not a completely black void. It's that shifting, smokey darkness that tells you that you're still alive, still in reality only that you're unconscious.

You float there, blissfully free from the pain and chaos of the last twelve hours. Has it been twelve hours? You can't remember. You can barely remember the last fight, nevermind the passage of time.

There's murmurs around you, and you can almost feel that you're being moved. A warmth fills you, but it's away off in the distance along with the voices that mean nothing to you because voices and words and language are apart of a world that you're currently far away from.

You don't care, though, because you can finally get some rest.

"-hn's... ... wa-..." A voice, one that you can actually understand slightly. You latch onto the noise and finally feel consciousness surge into your body.

> Warning! Your body state is currently: Weakened!

The first thing that hits you is that it's daytime. You can tell because everything is currently a bright, blurry mess.

"You back from the dead there son?" Goo Hwi, at least you assume it's him, comes into your vision. He looks alright.

"Oh, we're fine John. Neither of us were scratched during the fight. You, on the other hand..." He looks at you with a stern look, "You're going to spend the next few days resting as much as you're able to".

"How bad was it?" You can't help your morbid fascination from rearing it's head.

"You had Severe cases of Exhaustion, Mana Depletion, and Shock. If you weren't in the shape you're in, your heart would have stopped".

"Yes, Mana Depletion" Goo Hwi nods, "You really didn't think it was adrenaline alone keeping you on your feet didn't you? You subconsciously use Mana while you're working, every Artificer I've met has done the same thing without realizing it; it's why I enjoy watching them so much".

"Right..." Something's been bugging you for a while now, and maybe now's the best time to bring it up.

There was a town we passed through yesterday, so we managed to get the word out about what happened in Bo Shan. With any luck, they'll be able to cut off the Blight from spreading much further".

"Do we have a destination in mind? Or are we just wandering about?" You don't mind either way, but it'll be nice to know for sure.

He doesn't leave you waiting on this one, "Sierra said she knew some people in a port city called Shirahoro, so that's where we're heading".

That works for you, so you nod. It's then that it hits you that you haven't seen the elf at all. "Hey, Goo Hwi, now that you mention her, how is Sierra doing?" You take a look around, but all you see is a small clearing in the midst of a forest. You've apparently been sleeping in the dirt.

The old man gives you a tough look, "She wasn't hurt during the fight, but she didn't relax until your condition improved to the point where I wasn't worried about you slipping into cardiac arrest. Right now, she's out getting us water".

You wince at the harshness of his tone; you really were in a bad state for a while. Something else piques your curiosity, so you speak up, "I saw you during the fight; gotta say I'm impressed. What's with those gauntlets though?"

A wistful smile comes to his face, "I haven't had to use those in years, I was a bit rusty. They hold up extremely well to the Blight, so it makes them very handy when fighting it".

You can't help but feel a bit awkward at his evaluation of his own abilities. Still, there's a calm quiet between the two of you, however, and it's rather pleasant out for how much hell you've been through recently.

You're feeling a lot better, so you go to get up for a walk when you feel yourself brush an arm against your rutsack.

But, it doesn't feel right. Your bag is supposed to be flexible and give when you push against it not be rigid and hard...

Oh, the Toolbox, right...

The Toolbox!

Mind whirling, you push yourself up into a sitting position and grab your bag. Pulling it open, you gently ease the Artifact out of into the open.

Goo Hwi, who was at first concerned with your sudden movement, is now extremely interested in what you have in your hands.

"John, what is that?" He sits down besides you.

Placing it on the ground, you're about to respond when there's a rustling ahead of you and Sierra materializes at the edge of the clearing holding five canteens. She's also wearing one of your Changes of Clothing.

You try to hold it in, but you can't. You burst out laughing because despite the fact that she's rolled the sleeves up and tied the top of your shirt as tight as she could it still looks like she's wearing a tunic and baggy pants.

She even knows she looks ridiculous, what with the completely stuffed look on her face, "Nice of you to join us again, *John*".

Calming down, you watch as she walks over, all thoughts of anger gone when she sees what you have.

"What is that? We found it in your bag, but didn't want to touch it without asking you what it was first".

A pretty sensible course of action, if you're being honest. When you trust your mouth to not grin too hard, you speak up again, "I found it in the Ruins, probably the only thing really worthwhile in that blasted place". You can't help but spit out the last of your words, "As for what it is, it's a Toolbox. What's really important is what's inside".

No one responses, because they're both right over your shoulder as you flip the latch on the side of it and the lid opens.

There's multiple tools inside, though only one is Magitech, and it's with reverence that you reach in and pull the that one out.

It's ancient, but aside from the obvious marks and scars on the metal that tell of years after years of usage the thing is in working condition. You're not really sure what it does, but you carefully aim it downwards and activate it.

There's a low humming noise as the mana conduit activates and the front starts glowing white hot. Turning it off again, you find a small switch on the side, hit it, and turn it back on.

Some grass is severely scorched as a thin blade of flame shoots out of the front. Goo Hwi and Sierra almost jump out of their skin and you start laughing again.

You have obtained:

"What a beauty..." You quietly say, though that ends when a joking tone enters your voice, "Thank you, unknown ancient artificer, for your glorious handiwork!"

You go to start laughing again, but the rush of blood to your head and your weakened body mean that you instead pass out onto your back.

At least you go out with a smile.

...

It's a few hours later that you wake up, because you find yourself in the twilight. Nearby, Sierra sits quietly, though she does turn to look at you when you sit up again.

"You calmed down now?" The question is spoken low and you can tell she's keeping her emotions in check.

"Yeah," You no longer feel the same rush as before, "I'm good now".

You both stare up at where you can see a few stars poking through the tree tops.

You say?:

"So," You slowly begin, "Shirahoro, huh?"

You can see Sierra nod out of the corner of her eyes, "Yeah, I worked with a few people that moved out there. I shouldn't have any issue getting back to work. Do you know anyone out there?"

Thinking to yourself, you might. Goo Hwi said Shirahoro was a port city, and where there's a port city you'll probably be able to find them...

"I might..." When she gives you a questioning look, you just shrug, "I know some people. They might be active there, they might not be, I'll have to see".

Silence reigns again, though you can see Sierra occasionally looking over at you.

After a few minutes of starting and stopping, she finally speaks, "John... What happened down in those Ruins? You mentioned something happened back when we were in the bar, but you were so out of it I have no idea if you said was true".

We should just say what happened as well, Jun lead us out to the ruins, the bandits came out and their leader forced me to work with them, etc...

To be real if the guards hadn't showed up the bandits might leave with what they wanted and i would be back to the town. Fucking idiots trying to fight in a place were there was a gliph rune of thay size..

Not like they had a choice.
>>

"It turned out that you, and I, were right. 'Jun' was a rat" You turn over and stare at Sierra, who's returning your look.

"The entire thing was a setup; someone must have told 'em that I was around because when we got to the Ruins ten bandits cut off any chance of escape and their boss, who wasn't 'Jun', gave me a deal. I could help them out with exploring the ruins and identifying any Magitech we found, or I could be executed. I agreed, for obvious reasons, and we went in. There really wasn't anything good to be found; all the tech in there was old and damaged, no power sources either. I noticed the Toolbox while we were walking around, but no one else saw it so I ignored it and grabbed it later. After that..."

"We traveled down this passage way for a while, until it opened up into this rather large chamber. We were slowly moving in when I noticed something; a bit of digging and some thinking made me realize there was an absolutely massive Rune etched into the floor. I was in the middle of figuring out whether or not we could get around it when the guards showed up.

There was an entire team of them, must have followed us down somehow, but the leader made his intentions clear from the first second: kill 'em all. I grabbed the closest cover I could find while the two groups went to town on one another. The bandit's must have been an old mercenary or military group, because they were holding their own sans one.

He ended up getting pushed back before getting his throat cut open. His blood spilled all over the edge of the Rune, and the damn thing just soaked it all up. It lit up in this ominous red fire and the magic pressure started to soar. I ducked behind the crate I was hiding behind just as everything exploded".

Besides, there's something more important to mention.

Yup we are definetly not avoiding to talk about the lost of our family and all the people we knew and loved. After all we are John now. Not that weak scared boy that was chased and almost killed by a blight monster.

Y'know, i feel like trying to forget everything will bite us in the back. How bout' we remember them, and we'll live on for em'?

"The force of the explosion knocked me out cold, and by the time I woke up everyone else was dead and the Blight was already covering everything. I didn't care about the others, the bandits were probably going to extort me again in the future and the guards followed a guy who quite literally said, and I quote 'Kill them all, no witnesses. No one can know what our town now possesses'. From there, I sprinted out of the room, picked up the Toolbox on the way out, and got to town as fast as I could. I believe you know the rest from there..."

Sierra looks down at your words, not saying anything.

After several moments, she speaks, "... you were right in the epicenter, then," her voice is so quiet you can barely hear it.

But you do, so you nod your head in response.

You look back to the stars, somewhat trying to find guidance in their soft light but mostly trying to remind yourself that the sky isn't always that pitch black void that your memories try to inter-splice at every opportunity.

Finally, you hear movement, and you look over to see Sierra standing next to where you're sitting. You go to ask her what's the matter, when she collapses into your side.

"Sierra?" The confusion is evident in your tone, but a quick look makes you realize that she's already asleep.

You sigh slightly, then slowly lean back so the two of you and lying against the ground. Sierra doesn't seem to notice, but it's obvious that you won't be going anywhere with how tightly she's currently holding your arm.

Not that you mind.

Still, the pull of sleep is coming for you now, and you really don't have it in you to fight it.

Another few seconds, and you're asleep as well.

[ARTIFICER QUEST PART 3 END]

> Once again, thanks for playing everyone. Ending things here as I've got an 11 hr work day ahead of me so I'd rather not be falling asleep during it. I will be starting part 4 in about 12 or so hours, so look forwards to that. It'll be on it's own thread, since we're almost at the 750 posts mark on this one. Someone get the archive up, and I'll link the new thread going up on twitter, found here: https://twitter.com/Storyteller_QM
