Whitaker's attempts at a calm school life are met with less than perfect results, culminating in him poking his nose (and finger) where it doesn't belong!

TODAY:
This is the big one, guys. What exactly is up with Penny?
>>
Neither of you dared to move once the image appeared on Penny’s scroll. You recognized this screen, from a few documents that your father allowed you to access in order to understand how the SDC dealt with other powerful entities, and you could easily recognize who was in contact with your teammate.

“Penny, why are you getting messages from the Atlesian Council?” The implications were very disturbing, especially given that Penny arrived with someone who had been through the Atlesian Cadet Academy. Was Atlas spying on Beacon through your team? Was Ciel involved? Is that why you hadn’t seen her land during initiation? Ciel had some way of guaranteeing Penny would be her partner, but the plan failed?

“I am not!” The lie is obvious, and she hiccups immediately after telling it. Whatever she’s hiding, she’s nervous about it. “That is a message from my father, he must have sent it through a secure channel!” Another hiccup, and Penny covers her mouth with both hands. Her eyes are held wide open, silently begging you to believe her. You’d like to let it go, to forget you ever saw it, but spying between Kingdoms could lead to catastrophic consequences. You can’t risk letting an international incident scoot by unopposed because you want to spare Penny’s feelings.

“He sends you messages on a secure channel that you shouldn’t have access to?” You force your voice to hold the solid, heavy tone that your father used so often. Penny looks ready to cry, which honestly makes you feel a little better. A heartless agent out to destroy the peace the Kingdoms enjoy wouldn’t be reduced to tears when confronted, she’d have already tried to kill you. “It’s a project for me,” she wavers, “that’s why it has my name on it…” Penny chokes out another hiccup, but you hold your searching gaze.

Her shoulders are trembling before she takes a large breath, and lets it out slowly. “If I tell you, Whitaker, you have to promise… Only you know. It’s not a secret that hurts anyone, I promise, but you still cannot tell anyone.” Penny holds your gaze with unsteady, wet eyes. She doesn’t seem ready to accept the idea you might refuse, or even ready to tell you whatever this amazing secret is, but poor luck has taken the choice from her.

>A) Swear to keep it a secret. “Alright, Penny. If those are your terms, I can live with them.”
>B) The team needs to know. “If the Council is involved, then Blake and Weiss deserve to hear this.”
>C) Refuse her terms. “Penny, if the Council has an interest in Vale, we can’t hide that. If this secret could threaten Vale, then we need to tell Ozpin at least, or we’re looking at a potential war.”
>D) Go against your better judgment and drop it. “I can’t make that promise, Penny, but I can't force you to tell me anything, either.”

>>
So Penny isn't super best friends with Ruby like in the show, right?
>>
>>1716577
No, she didn't need to latch onto the first person that showed her affection.
>>
>>1716577
A lot of relationships we saw in the show aren't going to happen in this timeline. For example, Jaune and Ren are very unlikely to become bros here without the bond of being teammates.
>>
>>1716587
To be fair though he still thinks of Ren as one of the "two guys who aren't jerks", so they might end up hanging out at some point.

We could be the "three not-jerks".
>>
>>1716587
If only there was some way for people to form bonds outside of their teams.
>>
>>1716520
You remember telling Penny that, as long as she was here at Beacon, the team was her family. She had seemed so touched at the time. Whatever this was, for her to expressly forbid sharing it among the team, it had to be big. “Alright, Penny,” you say after a tense moment, and she let’s out a held breath, “If those are your terms, I can live with them.”

You had thought that this admission would’ve made her at least smile, but Penny remains dour. “May I have my scroll?” she asks in a small voice, and you wordlessly pass it to her. She taps away at the device, inputting her login information, and a blue screen opens. Penny turns the screen towards you, and you’re greeted with what seem to be blueprints of an amazingly complex humanoid machine.

“Another Atlesian Knight model?” you suppose out loud. Penny doesn’t confirm, and waits for you to arrive at some sort of conclusion. After a few moments of the two of you wordlessly staring at one another, Penny frowns at your lack of comprehension and pulls her scroll back. A few more taps, and you hear a mechanical hiss from somewhere in the room. You jolt and move to stand, hoping to catch an intruder before Penny reveals her secret to them inadvertently, but she sets a gentle hand on your shoulder and leads you to sitting back down.

“Whitaker,” she finally says as she rolls a sleeve back. You look at her exposed arm and notice a small black band below her elbow. Did she have a tattoo or… You cut off the thought when you notice her clench her fist around her arm, just below the strange band. Penny is trembling, very slightly, at whatever is about to happen and seems to be losing her composure. This time, you set a calming hand on her shoulder.

“Yeah?” Your voice is low. It feels like it should be. Penny builds up her courage at your gentle prompting and slowly begins to pull the skin on her arm towards her hand. You’re confused for a moment, and then you see the skin start to move. It wasn’t a tattoo or mark, it was an opening! You reflexively suck in air to scream, but the sound never comes out. Penny’s skin slides off as easily as a glove, and soon you’re looking at a fully mechanical forearm. “I’m… Not a normal girl…”

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1716667
This was… Insane. You had SEEN the Knight robots Atlas churned out by the hundreds, and horror grips your heart are you begin to spot similarities between the Knight’s engineering and Penny’s false limb. Her movements had disturbed you, she had little human contact, she was the mysterious and hereunto unknown only daughter of the most talented roboticist on Remnant…

“You’re a… A robot?” Penny confirms your question with a sad nod, “The first to be created with the capability for generating aura… It’s why I’m training to be a Huntress. It’s what I was made for.” This was something far beyond anything you were prepared for. All of your prior experience is worthless now, so what are you going to do?

>A) The two of you can’t keep this a secret. Try and persuade her of that. “Penny, this is… This is covert military action. We have to tell somebody.”
>B) You can’t let this get out without risking a war between Atlas and Vale, and in the event of a war, Penny’s position is precarious. “No one is going to find out. I won’t let them. I promise.”
>C) This definitely crosses into something the team should know. “Do you remember what I said, Penny? SPWB is your family. You can trust us, all of us.”
>D) This is so… Awesome! “So that’s what the laser stuff was!? What else can you do!?”
>E) Let someone know. Without Penny’s approval.

I like Penny, but she's just rendered us a party to International Incident Megapalooza: The Prologue.

"Spiderweb": two Schnees, a military-grade robogirl from another country, and a former White Fang operative. Don't fucking tell me he doesn't know.
>>

I second the motion for a bro hug. We gotta show we're okay with her being a robot, and the quickest way of doing that is showing we're not afraid of touching her.

>B) You can’t let this get out without risking a war between Atlas and Vale, and in the event of a war, Penny’s position is precarious. “No one is going to find out. I won’t let them. I promise.”
Gotta look after Penny, and keep this a secret. Cinder uses this exact information later on to terrify people, so we know it's dangerous.

>>1716637
Ren and Jaune did a lot of their bonding in the show because they were teammates. I didn't say people couldn't bond outside of their teams, just that this is just one relationship that might not be as strong as in canon.

im still confused on why people would go to war when there are literal knightmare beasts coming for you out side your walls.
>>
>>1716751
Because people are fucking stupid. Ever hear of the phrase "Cut off your nose to spite your face"?
>>
>>1716751
Plot, that's the why
>>
>>1716724

So Ren won't be teaching Jaune how to girls?
>>
>>1716751
Because they can live with the nightmare beasts. Remember, the average scrub doesn't fight Beowolves every night, he watches the news in his shorts. The Grimm are a global threat, but when the Sword of Damocles has been hanging overhead for literal centuries, at some point people are going to move on with their lives and, unfortunately, war is a part of life.
>>1716769
No, we're teaching Jaune how to girls now.
>>
>>1716751
When you get used to something for such a long ass time, it becomes almost non-important in comparison to what can be considered new in the here and now.
>>
>>1716751
I felt like Whitaker was jumping to the worst conclusion when he theorised it cooks be war, but it would look very bad.

As Cinder put it, why would Atlas design a powerful robot to look human, if all it's supposed to do is kill grimm?
>>
>>1716751
If someone hurts you once, it's easy to get them to hate a whole group. Just paint a caricature that can capture the perpetrator, and suddenly it's "humans" who oppressed you and your family, or it's "faunus" who tried to murder your sister.

It happens literally all the time.
>>
>>1716777
My question is, why don't people just use turrets instead of hunters????
>>
>>1716783
Turrets can be outsmarted, Huntsmen at least have a chance to outwit the Grimm. Remember, Grimm aren't mindless, they're just single purpose.
>>
>>1716783
.............that is a good question
>>
>>1716783
The same answer to the question I had of why none of the Kingdoms had standing militias or standing armies.
Because the writers of RWBY are retarded.
>>
>>1716783
Something something aura, jibber jabber semblance.
>>
>>1716783
Uh... Out of sight, out of mind?
>>1716790
But, Atlas DOES have an army, and it makes the rest of the kingdoms uncomfortable.
>>
>>1716795
Except it's made of 90% robots.
And was just as exactly effective as it was in Season 3, absolutely worthless and easy to subvert.
>>
>>1716795
and that uncomfortable makes the grimm more aggressive and stronger. If each nation had a standing army, people would feel unease due to higher chances of war.
>>
>>1716783
We don't know that they don't, but turrets aren't infallible, and there's way more hardcore Grimm out there then wimpy Beowulfs.

Vale probably had turrets if anywhere did. And while we didn't really see how the Grimm punched through Vale's borders, we do know that there were a fuckload of them and that those powerful and highly durable elephant Grimm were involved. An attack like that could probably overpower a turret line.
>>
>>1716786
Eh true, I was just thinking of the idea of less populated areas using ATLAS Turrets, instead of hunters. Due to reasons, mostly involving teh deployment of a hunter team.
>>
>>1716783
Because static defenses are dumb.
>>
>>1716802
And people will find excuses to be uncomfy and stupid shit. So either way, the Grimm will just get bigger and badder. So you may as well HAVE a population that knows how to handle weapons, basic tactics and actually have an idea of what the fuck to do when shit hits the fan. Much like the Switzerland Militia.
>>
>>1716790
There are also other reasons. A couple of stories I have read explained why there weren't guns in the fantasy world setting. The best one was that Mana is naturally in all living (organic) and natural (unprocessed) things, and gave those things a natural energy barrier. Mana was required to break another being's energy barrier. Processed items, like purified ores, lost the ability to retain mana and could only retain the mana charge if they were in contact with something that was giving them a charge, like a sword in a person's hand or attached to a mana-charged arrow shaft.
>>
>>1716820
So what you're telling me is that if I bleed on the bullets or hollow out the bullets and fill it with blood or other fancy bodily fluids, it'll be charged with mana?
Or am I not comprehending the explanation?
>>
>>1716820
So how does one charge something with mana? Could anything be used in place of a bullet if the gun had mana?
>>
>>1716669
Penny isn’t taking your silence well. It takes you several minutes of consideration, and those minutes visibly eat away at her. She pulls the skin back over her arm and fidgets with her hands in her lap. Her gaze lowers with every passing second, until she’s staring at the floor. Eventually, the pressure becomes too much for her and she breaks the silence.

“Whita-” She’s cut off by you pulling her into a hug. It must be one of the hardest you’ve given since Winter left. Something about this moment feels just as important as then to you. “No one is going to find out,” you tell her, and you feel Penny stiffen a bit in your grip, “I won’t let them. I promise.”

With the oath sworn, Penny returns your hug. You can feel the pressure she’s putting into it. A morbid part of you wonders exactly how hard she could squeeze, if she had a reason to, but you let the thought go. You have so many questions…

“Who’s your uncle?” You surprise yourself with the first, but it’s a valid question now. It was common knowledge that Dr. Polendina had only distant relatives. You had assumed this uncle was her mother’s brother but, without a mother…

“General Ironwood…” Penny’s small voice supplies. “He isn’t related to me, but he has always been around. I called him my uncle once, and he did not dissuade me. At least, not in private. I have to call him ‘General Ironwood’ when others are around.” You didn’t know the General very well, but the idea of a serious, straight-laced man like him being drafted into a family made you laugh a bit.

You and Penny finally break your hug, and she gives you a good opportunity. “I know you must have many questions. If you want to ask any now, I will do my best to answer.”

>B) “What can you do?”

>>
>>1716844
>>1716843
Essentially yes. But you have to remember how guns developed in our world. "How do I make this projectile go faster, be easier to train, and scare more people?" These fantasy worlds wouldn't have developed the structure to establish these natural laws, as magic would explain most phenomena, and the scientific method wouldn't need to develop.

And as for the blood bullet thing, do you think that you would try and bleed on a stone and then throw it at someone if you could make ice crystals full of magic the size of trees instead?

This is what I want to know. In canon, she was kept under Atlesian control and watch. Something has changed if she's here at Beacon with just Ciel to watch her.

But in-universe, it's a reasonable question for Whit to want to ask. Cuts right to the heart of the matter.

“How many people know?” It’s something your mother taught you: A secret isn’t a secret if more than two people know. Functionally, it is, but it’s very difficult to KEEP a secret. Penny takes a moment to count, which doesn’t do your heart any good.

“It’s an inexact number. My father, General Ironwood, and you are the only ones that I’m aware of personally, but several Councillors are also aware. I know that none of them are close to your father, but I do not know who they are. It has been a point to shield my existence from anyone affiliated with the Schnee Dust Company…” She flinches a bit as she remembers who she’s telling this to, and a knot of dread begins to form in your stomach. Despite your best efforts, you’ve stumbled into a serious power struggle between your family and the military. Your only saving grace was that your father didn’t know he was struggling, and if was up to you, he’d stay ignorant until the day he passed on.

“There are also a few trusted agents. I do not know who they are, either, but it is likely they are Specialists.” That catches your attention in a much different way. “Would Winter be one of them?” you ask, and Penny gives you a confused look in response.

“Who is Winter?” Right, you hadn’t actually talked about her to Penny before. “My older sister,” you explain, “Specialist Winter Schnee.” Penny quirks her head and gives it a little thought before answering you, “I cannot say. It’s possible the information would not be offered to her, given her family, but it depends on how well General Ironwood trusts her.”

Given what you knew about how closely your sister worked with the General, you would bet a sizeable chunk of money that Winter knew exactly who Penny was, and who she was teamed up with. That thought sent an uncomfortable shiver down your spine. Everyone that Penny mentioned would know who you and Weiss were, and how close either of you could come to finding out a very closely guarded government secret that your family was nearly-explicitly barred from learning about.

You decide to let that thought lie down for a little while before you approach it again, and turn your thoughts to other questions instead.

Little late to this discussion, but if Grimm feed off of negative emotions shouldn't the world of Remnant be some hippie culture where anything negative is outlawed? And wouldn't Hunters be counter-productive since genociding some animals and watching your comrades get shredded aren't exactly wholesome thoughts?
>>
>>1717217
That line of thinking basically started the Great War.
>>
>>1717231

>>
>>1717217
"Beatings will continue until morale improves."
You just can't force people to be happy without constant medicinal assistance.
>>
>>1717217
>if Grimm feed off of negative emotions shouldn't the world of Remnant be some hippie culture where anything negative is outlawed?
They basically tried this before, and a huge war broke out because of it.

Also, how much negativity attracts Grimm seems to be relative. It took a sustained campaign of terrorism and a large spike in panic to trigger the huge Grimm attack on Vale, so it seems that huge Grimm attacks require negative emotional on a massive scale. So, one guy having a bad day isn't going to be an issue.

> And wouldn't Hunters be counter-productive since genociding some animals and watching your comrades get shredded aren't exactly wholesome
This seems like an odd question. They need armed soldiers because their world is under attack. Possible psychological trauma, while bad, is an occupational hazard.

Also, the Grimm aren't normals animals. They're violent monsters who have been attacking humanity for as long as humans can remember. Nobody in Remnant going to have any qualms about killing them.
>>
>>1717266
I would think that having some measure of free will and expression in addition to being allowed free to follow your own pursuits would work to help with dealing with negativity. Unless I am misunderstanding things and the great War was basically where you had 40k commissar trying to keep morale high by blaming someone
>>
>>1717266
In a way the Robots are the perfect fighting force to combat the grimm.
>>
>>1717278
You are misunderstanding because afaik, that's exactly how the Great War was. It's enough of a shock that it made literally all of Remnant start naming shit after colors so that every life felt beautiful and precious or some gay shit like that.
>>
>>1717254
This is just bad writing, to be honest. They feed on emotions, so they clearly need them to survive. But if they don't have them they get stronger?
>>1717244
Good point, nothing wrong with a bunch of druggies if it means less people die.
>>1717266
>They basically tried this before, and a huge war broke out because of it.
A mass terrorist organization, racism, and diplomatic tensions. War doesn't exactly seem to be an issue here

And to answer the odd question...

Well, there's robots, which don't feel emotion, and if Penny can be created then a dumbed down, mass produced lines of machines could replace hunters.

>>
>>1717244

>>1717254
Should be switched, my mistake.
>>
>>1717295
>>1717300
The Grimm didn't cause the Great War, people did. The Grimm got stronger because of the fear and anger the Great War caused, not because of the lack of emotion. That plan was actually working, IIRC, but afterward, it was deemed not worth what people had to sacrifice to make it work.
>>
>>1717299
She wouldn't have been a problem if those robots ran Linux.
>>
>>1717314
>muh Linux is hacker proof meme
[spoilers]I'm fucking with you, I just see this way too much.[/spoiler]
>>
>>1717311
That seems a little off. I'd say my free will is worth sacrificing so I don't get mauled by some animal made of pure hatred. And since The Great War killed off people in the long run, wouldn't that lead to less emotions(And thus negative emotions)? Killing most of humanity would be the right choice in this world.
>>
>>1717295
>A mass terrorist organization, racism, and diplomatic tensions. War doesn't exactly seem to be an issue here
This war was. There were just four nations in Remnant at the time (a small nation was created later, but that's another issue). The Great War had two of these nations fighting each other.

So yes, when the last attempt outlaw emotion led to all of the world's nations fighting each other, then it is a rather big deal.

>if Penny can be created then a dumbed down, mass produced lines of machines could replace hunters.
She already was. They're called Atlas Knights, those basic Atlas robots in the show. Ironwood even had a scene in Volume 2 where he told some Vale citizens that he wanted to use those robots so that humans didn't have to risk themselves.
>>
>>1717333
But they've been shown to be able to do fuck all. Not a single one has killed a Grimm on screen and most of the time they stand around shooting at nothing.
>>
>>1717339
Thus why dumbing them down for mass production is a bad idea.
>>1717331
Well, you would, but not everyone agrees. If you can't feel anything for survival, or do what you want with your life, what's the point of surviving? Remember, this isn't just the CHANCE for survival and then, once the Grimm are gone, go back to living as you used to. As far as anyone knows, this would be a permanent state of Limbo.
>>
>>1717339
They kicked ass against the Grimm during The Breach, actually.
>>
>>1717344
Who's to say that the Elite would even let the plebeians know what living life is like? Power attracts the worst people, and most would be willing to save their own skin to have mindless husks walking around to work the machinery of society.
>>1717345
Well, the only issue here is that the other nations haven't adopted these and replaced Hunters. If they're extremely effective, easy enough to mass produce, and don't have the drawback of feeding Grimm, there's no reason not to use them.
>>

“Are you okay?” You had so many questions, but seeing exactly how small Penny’s view of her own existence was made those concerns seem small in comparison. She smiles a little at the question and say, “Yes, I believe I will be.”

“I asked if you are, not if you will be.” Despite how serious your words are, you soften them a bit with a small smile and a teasing voice. Penny grins at being caught before it falls into a more contemplative expression. “I am glad that you know, but… I have been told, all my life, to keep what I am secret. It was the first order I planned to disobey.” That surprised you. As long as you had known her, Penny was a person who rarely fought when something was asked of her. You suppose that’s why the incident stuck out to her.

“I wanted to share it with someone. I had a very specific plan in mind. Unfortunately, I was unable to find someone to enact that plan with.” Something about that story stuck out to you. “Why not Ciel,” you ask, “isn’t she your bestie?” Penny’s cheeks take a slight pink dusting and she answers that, “Ciel would not be ideal.” She doesn’t go into further detail, no matter how long you wait for her to answer.

“Well, who is ideal?” Penny’s light coloring takes a darker turn as she contemplates the question. “I have thought of someone, but unfortunately, my plan will not work with them anymore.” She sounded genuinely upset as she said that. “Why not?” you ask. Maybe you could help? Unfortunately, you get nothing out of her.

“I would like to go to sleep now,” she says, shutting the conversation down.

“Do you even need sleep?”

“...Yes. It is essential.” There’s a moment or two of silence, and then she hiccups. You offer to get her some water, but she refuses and you leave her alone for the night.

A few days scoot by in monotony before something catches your attention. Well, you should say someone. As you wander the halls of Beacon towards your next class, a flash of red clouds your vision. By the time your brain catches up to your eyes, you realize you’re standing in a small alcove, and Ruby is clinging to the front of your shirt. She seems panicked. Her eyes are wide and desperate, and her hair's a mess. “Whit, you have to help me!”

“Uh-” Before you can get a word in, Ruby slams a small hand over your mouth. “You helped Ciel with her team, right?” she asks, a pleading tone settling in. Unable to speak without getting your saliva on her hand, you offer a nod that you feel doesn’t really capture the whole story. You didn’t do all that much, in your mind.

“Then help me! Ellie’s been skipping class for WEEKS, and I can’t find her anywhere!” That was going to be a tall order. The only thing you knew about Ruby’s third teammate was that she had an embarrassing name and didn’t speak. All you could possibly do is guess where she might be.

“Well, I guess I could check...

Currently, there is a tie between Whitaker going to A) The library and B) The ballroom.

Splitting up won, but there is a tie between sending Ruby to either the D) Entrance Hall or A) The Library

Extending the vote for ten minutes, these are your remaining options

Whitaker goes to either

>A) The Library
>B) The Ballroom

Ruby goes to either

>A) The Library
>D) The Entrance Hall

If both library votes win, they'll go together. Please do not vote if you've already voted, it's not a runoff vote.

The trek to the library takes almost no time at all, thanks to a combination of Ruby’s speed, dragging you behind her, and the library not being very far in the first place. Ruby almost slams the door open before you catch her wrist and gently open it yourself. With classes still ongoing today, the library is practically empty. The only people immediately visible are the employees who work there.

You nod for Ruby to check the library proper. When she speeds off, you take a more measured pace towards the front desk. “Excuse me,” you begin with your voice low, “did a student come in here earlier? Black hair, kinda short?” The man behind the counter shakes his head at your question. “The only people to come in today were you two and a blonde,” he offers. You thank him anyway.

You step away from the counter to find Ruby and try somewhere else before you see the blonde in question. You’ve never seen her in all your time here. Her hair is cute short, a dirty blonde rather than Yang’s fiery gold. She could be a second or third year student, but you couldn’t remember all the teams above you to be sure. Aside from that, she was incredibly short for a student a year above you.

You’re about to drop it and find Ruby anyway, but then you see her pull a book out by the top of its binding. She doesn’t remove it from the shelf. Instead, she seems to wait for a second or two before pushing the book in place. You hesitate for a little longer, and sure enough, she does it again, this time to another book further along the shelf.

After only ten or so minutes of wandering after this mysterious girl, you begin to grow bored. Oddly enough, it seems your target was way ahead of you. She rolls her eyes at every displaced book, occasionally letting groans of frustration slip. She must have been at this for far longer than you first thought.

Eventually, she reaches a corner of the library and pulls out a notebook. She jots something down in it before turning towards a nearby exit. Whoever this girl is, she’s looking for something and has been for a while. You follow her, mentally assuring yourself that your perfect attendance means that you can afford to miss a single day of Doctor Oobleck’s class.

Her wandering steps take her almost everywhere on campus, and everywhere she goes, she fiddles with something innocuous before pouting at the lack of results and writing in her notebook. You suspect that it’s a list - a very long list given how she was scowling at it - of failed tests. She must have heard Beacon had some sort of secret entrance or tunnel at some point and was obsessed with finding it. The idea of a secret room of treasure was a tempting one, but you know better than to assume such a thing would exist in a school.

Eventually, the girl finds a place to rest. One of the many courtyards, exposed to the sunshine. She takes a seat on a bench, closes her eyes and seems to wait a few minutes before drifting away into a nap. You check the time on your scroll and grimace. You left Ruby in the library almost twenty minutes ago. You shove the scroll back into your pocket with an angry grunt. So much for that.

As you shove your hands into your pockets and turn to leave, you spot something that interests you - her notebook, left on the bench beside her. Something nags at the back of your mind that if this girl is up to something, now is the perfect time to find out without getting caught.

You’ve also left both your hands in your pockets and are now afraid to remove them for fear of the sound of shuffling fabric waking her. The sum effect is that you approach with a casual posture far too slowly to be anything except suspicious. You look like a cartoon character pretending to be a spy, and your face heats up. At least there’s no one else in the courtyard to see you.

After sending quick glances over both of your shoulders to make SURE no one can see you, you finally approach the napping girl and, more importantly, the notebook. You lift a careful hand towards it and slowly grasp it, then mimic your earlier careful steps away from her. Once you’re sure you’ve gotten to a distance where she won’t hear shuffling paper, you open it. The first several pages are filled with gibberish. Absolute nonsense pours over every inch of paper, so you flip until you spot something recognizable.

It’s a single word, and one you recognize. “Palmprate,” the last name of Ruby’s missing teammate, is circled near the bottom of the page. Above that is “Alm” followed by viciously crossed out letters you can’t make out, a few more words completely scribbled over beyond comprehension, and finally another word that makes absolutely no sense. A few pages of nonsense followed by the name of the exact person you’re looking for isn’t a coincidence, you quietly take out your scroll and snap a few pictures of the pages. There was something deeper in there, but as for what it was, you can’t be certain.

Flipping past the page with Ellie’s surname, you come to the section that she must have been adding to while you were following her. A few innocuous items, including “lamp,” “table,” and “counter” are listed an incredible amount of times, each with a seemingly unique series of numbers and letters beside it. The only connecting element is that an “X” had been written in the rightmost part of the line for every listed item.

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1717970
You continue flipping, and the lists change from common objects to more esoteric ones. “Dust container” and “forge,” followed by a single page that makes your blood run cold. A list of furniture, preceded by four-letter acronyms that you recognize:

RYAL Bed RR2 X
RYAL Bed YXL1 X
RYAL Bed JA3 X
RYAL Bed LP4 X

The lists continued through everything that the standard dorms contain, and the next few pages had the acronyms of many teams you recognized. SPWB was one of them.

Finally, you reached the end section of the lists. This was filled with book titles, without the string of letters that, you now assumed, denoted the owner of whatever it was. Every single thing on all of these lists was marked with an “X,” meaning that everything had either passed or failed whatever the girl was inspecting. To go through this many objects, at the pace she displayed when you followed, she would have had to be in Beacon for over a month, at least! What are you going to do with all of this?

>A) Finish photographing as much of the book as you can before placing it back where you found it.
>B) Take the book and try to decode exactly what she’s doing with all of this stuff, while also, hopefully, halting her progress.
>C) Wake her up and confront her!

I'm searching up any short blonde RWBY character and so far it's just Glynda

Unless she's in a real good disguise and is being completely out of character for herself, this is soneone who we need to keep tabs on. Especially if she is keeping tabs on US and Jaune and Neo

Don't lose your head, Whit! You've got the evidence, but you have to cover your tracks first! Writing, and then we're done for tonight!
>>
>>1717973
You flip to pages that stick out in your mind. The lists containing RYAL, SPWB, and CNRP’s furniture are your first candidates, but it takes you much longer than you’d like to find the unique pages that may hold clues as to what this was all building towards. Thankfully, it seems your target takes long cat naps. Once you start sweating from the summer heat, you close the book. You can’t let sweat drip onto the paper, or your presence would be exposed later. Even with the sudden cut off, you’re reasonably sure you got most of what you’ll need to figure it out.

Maybe Penny can decode it? She was developed by the brightest minds of Atlas, surely she could recognize any patterns the text may hold? It was a question you’d answer the next time you saw her in a “safe” place. You slip the book back onto the bench and freeze as she offers a sudden snore. When her own breathing fails to wake her, you pull your hand back and walk faster than you should towards the exit. You’ve spent at least an hour wandering around, and while you suspect you’ve accomplished something worthwhile, you’ve also missed at least two of your classes today. Weiss was going to be furious.

(LATER)

She wakes with a smile. She may not have found what she was looking for today, but that was alright. They had a lot of time to get this right. She sits up with a small stretch, and sets her hand down on the notebook beside her. Something doesn’t feel quite right all of a sudden, but she shakes the feeling off. She’s done it enough lately for it to become habitual. She places the book into the satchel at her hip and takes in the surrounding area. Clear, as far as she knows. She’s pretty good, though, so it’s fine. The short blonde hair seems to rapidly grow down her shoulders, but she doesn’t feel a thing, even when it begins to darken to a jet black. Her eyes settle back into the familiar green shade, and she huffs a bit. Even with the familiar features setting in, she hasn’t felt like herself in months. Oh well. Time to get back to her “team.”
>>
>>1718103
Sorry for the abrubt ending, but continuing right now doesn't feel right. Also, I'm tired, so that's it for tonight! I can stick around for any Q&A you may have, either about the quest in general or anything that happened tonight!

Weiss hasn't shown any interest in friends. She's got her brother, that's good enough. At least, according to her
>>1718129
>Does Jaune suspect anything's up with his team, or anyone else's?
Not at all.
>Has Jaune unlocked Aura yet?
Yes, Pyrrha did it for him when they began their training bouts. They may not be on the same team, but Pyrrha genuinely wants to help him.
>How far are we into the volumes?
I'd say about a quarter of the season away from finishing Vol 1.
>Is there any way we can experiment with our Glyphs, to see if there are interesting combos we can make that would help out our team?
Not in a way that would feel natural outside of a fight, though I will make a point to offer creative options in action scenes.

To explain why we're STILL on Vol 1. Well, it's because there are four more people than canon that have to have relationships established. The volumes are going to drag a bit as we find out what everyone is doing. We're almost there. Give it another session or two, and that'll be the end of your first semester!
>>
>>1718166
I ain't complaining and honestly I like a slow build up to the grand finale

I'm more than fine for there to be long times in each volume. RWBY passes so fast it's a relief for it to last longer.

So who was the victim of Whit's ink pen prank in the short story last thread?
Also, does Whit have a habit of crafting elaborate pranks? It seems like you could buy a lot of mousetraps with that dust money...
>>
>>1718230
In my mind, Blake, but it's meant to be ambiguous. And not really elaborate. His stuff is off the cuff, and even then it doesn't happen often.
>>
>>1718108
Why were Penny and Weiss staring at each other in the dorm room a while ago? Is it something we could've found out about, or just a random humorous event?
>>
>>1718336
My guess it was a stareing contest, you know first one to look away/ blinks losses?
>>
>>1718558
^This, but it was Weiss's idea. She wanted an excuse to look at Penny in detail and try to find out what you had seen and freaked out about. By the time you walked in, it had become an actual competition, so Weiss wanted to win too much to talk to you.

In the end, she didn't notice anything weird and lost the game, so she didn't bring it up.

>>
>>1718923
So if Weiss finds out that Penny's a robot what happens?
>>
>>1718923
Interesting.
>>
>>1719026
No idea. I suppose it depends on how Weiss takes the idea that Whitaker has been keeping it a secret, and how twitchy the Military gets over the idea that the two people in line to inherit the SDC know the secret that they had gone VERY far out of their way to keep from the SDC.
>>
>>1719142
We just go straight to Ironwood and say, verbatim:

"Neither Weiss nor I want or Father to know this. I would prefer he not be given anymore simple tasks to fuck up, let alone something as massive as this."
>>
>>1719183
>not wanting to side with the inevitable SDC takeover in full of Atlas so we can actually see the nation set straight
>>
>>1719191

>>
>>1719200

>>
>>1719191
SDC is a big reason Atlas is so fucked up though.
>>
It's simple.

(THE FOLLOWING DAY)

Ciel passes your scroll to Ruby with a look of undisguised rage. “This girl has been in our rooms, where we sleep, and none of us had any idea?!” You offer a hopeless shrug. “It’s not hard proof,” you point out, “but it’s the best we can get without watching her do it. As far as I can tell, she’s looking for something, and if she’s doing it between classes.” The other students around you react with varying degrees of frustration.

Ren was, as you had always known him to be, the least affected by the news. You’re sure he felt something unpleasant at the idea, but you could respect a man who didn’t show his nerves, even as they were being frayed. His partner, Pyrrha, was surprisingly unmoved by the knowledge someone could get that close to her. Or at least her things.

On the other end of the spectrum, Penny and Ruby seemed terrified that someone had broken into what had become their homes these past few months. They both sent worried glances towards their teammates, Ruby to a smoldering Yang and Penny to you. Many of your peers, including your sister, Nora, and - surprisingly - Jaune took after Yang’s example, grinding their teeth in silent fury. The final member of Team RYAL was, as always, absent from the meeting.

Blake set a hand to her chin in thought when you had first begun to explain what you had found and hadn’t moved since. With the explanation finally drawn to a close, she took the opportunity to offer a solution, “Then we need hard proof.” It’s a simple answer, so she clarifies further.

“You said you didn’t get pictures of everything, right? Then we’re missing information that could be critical. We have a considerable amount of it, and we should go through what’s there, but it could be a dead end without the rest of it. On top of that, we have no idea where, or who, this girl is or what she wants. We’ve got enough people to check everything, at least for tonight. So what do we do?”

The massive group turns towards you. As the one who brought it to everyone’s attention, you’ve been guiding their understanding of the situation, and it seems they trust you to know who should go where.

The three teams split along the lines you draw, and most of them (save for Jaune) are happy to try it. Your team consists of Ruby, for her Speed semblance, Blake, for the natural stealth-focused capabilities you knew she had, Yang, to get you out of trouble if you’re caught, and yourself, because you know what the target looks like. The first obstacle you run into proves to be the most difficult one.

“Where do we even start looking?” ponders Ruby. From the mouths of babes, you suppose. It was a good question, and Blake provides the answer, “Whitaker said she’s already checked all the dorms, most of the communal rooms, and the library. Assuming she’s not going to double check, and that she’s going to be at Beacon today, she’ll either be looking in classrooms, offices, or the outer grounds.” Two of those were off limits to students when classes weren’t in session, so it’s a simple matter when you all decide to patrol around the school.

The march is miserable. The summer heat is in full effect, and it doesn’t have the decency to be a pleasant reprieve from the snow as it is in Atlas. This heat is suffocating, the moisture in the air pulling at your clothing and making it all feel ten pounds heavier. You ignore Yang and Ruby’s giggling as you tie your coat off around your waist. How does Ruby handle wearing full length sleeves in this?

The perimeter seems perfectly monotonous, until you reach the rear of the circle that makes up the grounds. The surrounding forest is thickest, and closest to the walls, here, and instincts force the four of you to wake up and pay attention. The walk continues until Blake gently grabs your shoulder. “Whitaker? Do you see that?” She points towards the treeline, and you follow her finger. Just inside the forest, nearly hidden from view, several human silhouettes are grouped together. They don’t move at the sight of you, and you motion for the others to move out of sight. Behind a small thicket, you ask Blake, “How many are there?”

“Three, that I can see. More that I can’t, probably.”

“Anything distinguishing?”

“The two closest to us are men, I think. The other one is behind them, I can’t see.” That didn’t confirm anything, much to your frustration. This is where the mystery girl would be, according to Blake’s deductions, but anyone could be having an illicit meeting in the forest. Technically, you were having an illicit meeting in the forest right now.

Hopefully by late Fall, we're in the know about Jaune's semblance.

Reckon if it's forcefields/kinetic manipulation, we can convince him to upgrade to a GUTS sword? Just imagine it Jaune swinging around that Dragon killing sword and ignoring kinetic forces to block it.

The thought that these mysterious figures may be innocent sticks around for a moment before you dismiss it. Even if they are, there’s no harm in looking. “Blake, do you think you can find out who they are without being seen?” you ask, and she gives you a flat expression. “Isn’t that why you brought me?” she retorts. You roll your eyes at her and gesture towards the group.

What follows is a tense experience. You can see Blake, most of the time, and that means you can spot every hesitant step she takes as she approaches. Your heart seizes whenever she stops, worried that perhaps she’s stepped on a twig or startled some animal, but the slow, creeping movement continues until she’s closer to their position than yours. You feel your scroll vibrate in your pocket, and you pull it out to check the alert.

You’re greeted by a picture of the blonde girl, surrounded by greenery and with two men in suits between herself and the photographer. “That her?” reads a message attached to the picture. You send a silent affirmative, and the next update doesn’t take long. “Can’t see book” is the news this time, “and they won’t speak to each other. Just waiting”

“What now?”

>A) Hold position. “Wait, we’ll move when we know why they’re here.”
>B) Risk detection, but get a better vantage. “Get closer, we’ll move up too.”
>C) Reveal yourself to them and ask why they’re here. “I’ve got a crazy idea, stay out of sight.”
>>

>>A) Hold position. “Wait, we’ll move when we know why they’re here.”

The entire point is to figure out what's going on, so we should stand by to back Blake up if her cover gets blown. But other than that, we wait.

If it goes well, they may answer all our questions by mistake.
>>
>>1720797
>A) Hold position. “Wait, we’ll move when we know why they’re here.”

If it were only us, we might risk it to get a better position, but we can't just risk teammates.

>C) Reveal yourself to them and ask why they’re here. “I’ve got a crazy idea, stay out of sight.”
Because I'm sure we can bring her inner villain to light and make her gloat before trying to kill us.

I don't like this. If they're waiting for someone, we could end up outmatched if they detect us. If Merc and/or Em show up, we're certainly in trouble.

...But still, it's the most likely way to get more info.

You send the message and get comfortable, Ruby and Yang following suit. You assume Blake is comfortable where she is, but you don’t want to check. It’s a fight to stay awake in the heat with nothing to do or pay attention to, but you manage it. Blake sends innocuous updates from time to time, detailing the positions that your girl and her friends shuffle towards. You almost admire them for keeping the jackets on. If the sisters hadn’t been here, you would have taken your shirt off, too.

Eventually, the vibrating scroll heralds an actual change. “New guy,” reads a message with a picture attachment. The newcomer is large, dwarfing the suited men and towering over the girl, and is wearing a similarly formal outfit. Your scroll shakes again and you tap over to Yang’s discussion. “i kno him” followed by “Junior, runs a club in Vale”.

Why is a club owner meeting some… person in the woods outside of Beacon? You don’t have time to think of the reason before Blake texts you again. It appears to be transcript of what she can hear.

“‘Thought you said this wouldn’t take long. We’re ready. We’ve BEEN ready for weeks. Find the fucking vault before our next meeting, or I’m not going to waste my time coming all the way out here again!’”

Vault? What vault? As far as you were aware, Beacon kept its funds in a bank like every normal business. They didn’t have need for a treasure vault, and the only other use you could think of one - keep dangerous things away from people - didn’t make sense. The armory had all the facilities to create some of the most dangerous man-portable weapons known to humankind. What could Beacon be hiding, or more pertinently, what convinced these criminals in the making that Beacon had anything to hide at all? The scroll shakes again, and you open Blake’s messages one more time.

“The guys are leaving!”

>A) If they’re planning on robbing Beacon, you can’t let them get away! Get out there and stop them!
>B) Let them go and find Ozpin. You’ll give the Headmaster a heads-up, and the proper authorities will take care of Junior.
>C) Let them go, but keep following the girl. You still need that notebook!

You motion for the two sisters to stay in position and message Blake the same. You’re not sure if the four of you could take on the four of them, but you’ve got enough evidence now not to risk it. The three thugs disappear into the woods, and a few minutes later you can hear the distant whirring of a Bullhead. All four of you remain motionless, and it puts you on edge. Why is the mystery girl taking so long to leave?

You don’t get the chance to begin truly worrying before a heeled boot crushes the grass beside your hiding spot. If you hadn’t moved under the bush to escape this damn heat, you’d have been spotted for sure. You hold your breath, desperate not to give away your position. You can feel the blood rush to your head as you wait. You fight to keep the air in your lungs, and when you begin to wonder if you can hold out any longer, another boot comes, and the two carry away your mystery girl.

With your breathing normal again, you wait for a few moments and rise from your hiding spot. At the sight of you standing, the girls break from their own hiding spots and rush to join you.

“Alright, Whit, who’re we goin’ after!?” Yang punctuates her question by pounding her fist together beneath an eager grin. “Ozpin,” you reply, and her enthusiasm burns away, leaving only confusion behind.

“Ozpin? But, we know they’re going to rob Beacon! We have proof!” You nod in agreement.

“That’s exactly why we aren’t going after them. We have proof, we even know who one of them is, thanks to you. Now we can hand things over to people who won’t get arrested for assault if they start a fight.” Yang deflates at your reasoning, and Ruby offers her a sympathetic pat on the shoulder.

You sat at the Headmaster’s surprisingly humble desk, in his equally surprising-but-for-entirely-different-reasons office. The clockwork in this room was ostentatious, even if it was serving a greater purpose. You didn’t think it was. The man in front of you was immobile, save for his steepled fingers tapping against one another. “You’re certain Ms. Belladonna heard them mention a ‘vault’?” he asks, his first clarifying question.

“I am, sir.” With no one-on-one experience to draw from regarding Ozpin, you decide to rely on your conversational skills honed with your father instead. He spreads his hands in a questioning gesture as he asks, “Is it possible she misheard?”

“It is, sir, but I’ve known Blake to be incredibly perceptive. I trust she’s accurate in this case.” He takes a deep breath and lets it out with a small sigh, “If you’re certain. Before I let you go, I do have one more question.” You wait patiently, certain you can clear up any lingering confusion.

“I’d like to hear your opinion on your fellow students. Have you been getting along with them, or have there been... Difficulties?” It’s an odd question, but he’s the Headmaster, so you answer as honestly as you can.

“I feel as though I’ve been getting along with everyone very well.” His hands return to their initial steepled position as he leans back in his chair. “You haven’t felt anything odd around any of them? Maybe nothing more than an unsettling gut feeling?” Your mind flashes back towards your initial reaction to Penny. That’s almost exactly the type of feeling Ozpin must mean, but if he’s asking about Penny... You steel yourself and lie in your steadiest voice, “No, Headmaster. I’ve never felt anything like that.” He nods, as if he was expecting the answer, before giving you a reassuring smile.

“Well, I’m glad to hear that. I’m sure it’s no easy task to acclimate so well into a new Kingdom, Mr. Schnee,” he waves you towards the elevator, “so I won’t take up any more of your time. Have a good evening.”

You wish him the same and step into the elevator, the hairs on the back of your neck pricking at Ozpin’s gaze. The feeling doesn’t leave you until you close the elevator doors. You hope he believes you.

The scene is familiar. Once again, two full teams of student, and one nearly full, have gathered in your dorm to discuss the results of what you found in the notebook. Weiss takes the initiative and steps forward with a small bundle of papers. “We asked around,” she begins, “and it seems no one has ever spoken to this girl on campus. She doesn’t have a team, a dorm, or any other way of accessing Beacon beyond simply walking on campus.” Weiss huffs in frustration as she turns to the second half of her paper stack.

“We tried Vale, but that came up with even more dead ends. As far as we can tell, she’s never been. None of the Dust shops recognized the description, no smiths had made a weapon for her, no check outs at a local library. Nothing.” Nora takes the opportunity to interject, “So, she’s either a super spy that only Whit can see or-” and is interrupted by Ren, “- or she’s using several disguises to operate locally.”

The news brings several unhappy grunts. It was hard enough tracking the girl down without being unable to tell what she would look like at any given time. With their evidence presented, Weiss took a step back and you replaced her.

“We found her, but were unable to secure the notebook. We did learn that she isn’t working alone, she has a contact in Vale by the name of ‘Junior,’ and that they’re searching for some type of vault within Beacon itself.” Pyrrha’s ears seem to perk up at that and she points out, “But, Beacon doesn’t have a vault.” You’ve got no better answer than a shrug.

“Someone should’ve told them that. It sounded like a larger operation than just the two of them, so I reported it to Professor Ozpin. He’s sent out a line to the local police, and they’ll be questioning Junior soon.” That, it seems, was much more welcome news. The only ones who visibly disagree with your judgment are Yang and Nora, no doubt eager to fend off armed robbers themselves.

With your report given, Ciel steps up with another stack of papers. “Penny and I have spent the evening going over the notes themselves, and the majority of Whitaker’s initial assessments are accurate. The lists do seem to indicate that our target has been personal inspecting the objects indicated. The surprise is located near the beginning.” She takes a stack on and pass it to Penny, who carries a copy to everyone. You recognize the picture with Ellie’s surname on the bottom, only this one has had several markings of uncertain purpose underlining letters seemingly at random.

“The cipher was… Unconventional. It follows no known method of encoding, but we got lucky. Penny spotted a pattern, and from that, extrapolated a key. The first few pages are a list of simple instructions: ‘Go to Beacon, Find the Vault.’ Whoever wrote this was expecting someone to break the code, and was as purposely vague as they could be. The only other piece of noteworthy information was about Liquorice’s name. At the very top of the page, the first sequence spells out ‘Torchwick.’”

Ruby lets out a small gasp and points an excited finger at Ciel. “That’s the guy who tried to rob that dust store!” she exclaims, and Ciel nods in confirmation. “The one you stopped him at, and several others. Torchwick has been identified stealing a hefty supply of dust over the past few months. Most assume he’s selling it on the black market, but if he’s been hoarding what he needs and selling the rest, then he should have enough Fire dust to blast a hole in any wall on Remnant. The perfect tool for a vault heist.”

Just caught up, and if I'm reading this correctly,
>The top blade is much thicker than any of those, but lacks any blades on the side. The side blades are actually the single blade, which splits down the middle and locks to either side, making it more of a battle ax. It fills the role of a halberd, thus calling it one, but it never actually LOOKS like a halberd. Mostly for more pointless weapon shifting and rule of cool.

We have a double-edged glaive, that transforms into a straight-edged battle-ax, that transforms into a high caliber bolt action rifle.

When we get the chance, in Vol. 4, we should make the shaft telescope to be smaller, so that we can use it effectively with one hand if we need to.

“I didn’t think it was a bad idea…” Jaune rubs at his arm and stares at the floor. You roll your eyes and stare hopeless towards Team RYAL’s ceiling. After a spirited debate between the three teams over whether or not the evidence you found tying Torchwick to the burglars-to-be was enough to bring it to Ozpin’s attention - which ended with a 9-2 vote in favor of bringing it to the Headmaster - Jaune decided to cash in on your offer to help him overcome his less than stellar stature. You had taken the rest of the night to rest after promising Jaune you’d see him first thing in the morning, after all his teammates filtered out of the dorm. It wasn’t going as well as you’d have hoped.

“It wouldn’t have been, if we were in a daycare. You’re seventeen, Jaune, you have to stand by your intentions! You can’t skulk around, leaving hints at what you’re thinking like a passive-aggressive waiter at a busy restaurant.” Jaune shrinks a bit at your reprimand, which sends another agonizing wave of irritation through you. “Stop acting like I’m about to hit you!” you demand, “You’re a Huntsman, Huntsmen don’t flinch because people yell at them!”

Jaune seems to take that to heart, for the moment, and meets your eyes again as he speaks in his defense, “But I’m not a Huntsman. I’m still in training.” Don’t I know it, you think, as you try to massage your building headache through your nose. You weren’t even sure what you were doing. There wasn’t a confidence-building course you could look at for lesson plan, or at least not one you’d dignify with the title of “course.”

“Jaune, let’s call it a day for now. Just work on not looking away when you talk to people.” You step out before he can stop you, though the agreeable hum he uses as he acknowledges your words makes you believe he wouldn’t have tried. Maybe you had too much on your plate. Leading a team was an unpleasant bundle of responsibilities without - unofficially, and without acknowledgement from any party - helping to lead two others. You’re saving grace was that it was still the weekend, and with dastardly plots and Jaune wrapped up for the moment, it was yours to do with as you wish.

Your considerations for the day were brought to an end when your scroll shrilled an alert at you. You fish the device out and check the message, idly wondering who could be interrupting your day before it could truly begin. Any thoughts of irritability shirk at the surprise you feel when you see who it’s from. Winter.

“Whitaker. I’m in Vale, cafe on Daylily. There’s only one. Be here in twenty minutes.” As usual, your older sister left very little room for argument. There’s no way you’re going to miss this meeting, because…

It was difficult not to grin all the while as the Bullhead carried you into Vale properly. You couldn’t believe that Winter had actually come! When you and Weiss had told her your plans to become Huntsmen, she had been the one to train the two of you to Academy standards. It had been the most difficult thing you had done in your life so far. You had faced tougher opponents than her summoned monsters, and at much higher stakes, but you had never been as weak as when you had first faced Winter’s training.

A light dusting of red colored your cheeks as you remembered the first exercise. Weiss’s footing had been horrible, instincts from dance lessons taking over, and you had dropped the pitiful wooden staff after a half-hearted swipe from the false-Beowolf knocked it from your grasp. Winter had stopped the lesson immediately and berated the two of you as if you were already trained soldiers, criticizing your execution of combat fundamentals that you had never even heard of at the time. Then she knocked the snow from both your shoulders and bandaged the small cuts your falls had given you. That cadence of discipline and comfort had defined her lessons until the day she finally stopped coming home.

By the time you disentangle yourself from bittersweet memories, you’re on Daylily with a small spring in your step, your head lightly bobbing to music even you couldn’t hear. The cafe she was in isn’t one you had ever visited during your stay, but then again, you hadn’t been to many cafes in Atlas either. Smells you can’t readily identify wash over you as you enter, and you spot her in a booth near the rear of the establishment. Winter gives you a small smile, and you respond with a grin. It’s hard not to rush into the seat opposite of her, and when you slide in, you're surprised when your hip bumps against another.
>>
>>1728367
“Oh, I am sorry Whitaker. I did not mean to sit in your way.” Penny politely scoots further against the window before leaning back, the top of her head just below the walls of the booth. You look between your teammate and your sister before clearing your throat. “I didn’t know that the two of you knew each other,” you say before reaching for a menu to cover your reaction. Winter places a hand on it, stopping you from picking it up, before explaining, “We’ve never met, but I know of her. It’s been a pleasure finally getting to talk to her.”

I know of her seems to confirm your earlier theory on Winter’s status regarding Penny’s secret, and you mentally curse, even as Penny is brightly agreeing with her, “Whitaker mentioned that he and Weiss had an older sibling, but he hasn’t said anything else about you! I had no idea you would be so nice!” Winter gives a tight lipped false smile as she glances at you, and you imitate Jaune with an awkward smile and a look away.

“As pleasant as this conversation has been, I’m afraid that we have serious business to discuss now that Whitaker is here.” The tone shifts with an almost audible thunk, and suddenly everyone sits up straighter. Winter was always good at that. “We need to discuss a conversation the two of you had a few days ago. I believe certain… Sensitive issues were brought up?”

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1728370
She couldn’t have been just visiting, could she? As far as you’re aware, there’s only one way that the Atlas military could’ve found out. “You told on me?” you hiss at Penny, who jumps to her own defense. “I did not!” she claims in a loud whisper, and Winter chooses that moment to end the debate.

“You updated the ‘Safe Contacts’ list and put his name on it.” Penny’s eyes widen, then shift with the rest of her expression into a more bashful state. “O-oh… Yes, I did do that…” You grimace. You can’t believe THAT’s how you were caught. Winter’s gaze turns towards you, and you idly wonder how she had managed to keep her “Trainer Face” so consistent over the years.

“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you tell me how many others know.” You’re resolute when you reply, “No one else,” and Penny nods along with your confirmation. Winter searches the two of you for a few moments before letting out a small sigh of relief. “I’m glad you had more foresight than to share this with anyone, even Weiss.” You give a nonchalant shrug and tell her, “You taught me better than that.”

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>1728372
Winter nods at your casual assessment and leans forwards, her hands steepled. “I’m fairly certain I know what you’re going to say, but I’ve been asked to confirm it with you. Penny’s secret is one that cannot, under any circumstances, be allowed to circulate. Our previous attempt at securing her position has met with failure, and we’d like to correct that mistake. Are you willing to sign on as Penny’s official liaison during her time at Beacon? It is not compulsory to agree, but it would smooth many things out.” That was a big question, with plenty of implications no matter which way you go.

If you agreed, you’d be an official part of the team helping Penny do… Something. You weren’t even sure, really, and this may be your only chance to find out. On the other hand, this project was certainly run by the Atlas military. Agreeing meant becoming, in even a small capacity, a soldier for your home Kingdom. Perhaps not in the beginning, but you doubt they’d let your Huntsman training rest on its laurels. Not to mention that your father would disown you, just as he had Winter, if he ever found out…

>A) Accept Winter’s offer. You couldn’t help Penny without a full understanding of the situation, and if you can keep father in the dark for, well, the rest of his life, it’d be a big step in uniting the power bases of Atlas.
>B) Deny Winter’s offer. You couldn’t mend the rift between the SDC and the military if you had no future in the SDC, and you had come to Beacon to both avoid getting caught up in Atlesian power plays and live your own life, both things that you risk losing by accepting.

It's basically giving up our autonomy the same way working for Jacques would, and I suspect that in the end this is like most something that can only be won in the middle.

So tempting, but I feel like it would be a strategic mistake.

Actually, momentary reconsideration, what does being an official liaison even entail? Why does that help Penny? It feels unnecessary and exactly like a blatant power play.

I'm going to change to

>B) Deny Winter’s offer. You couldn’t mend the rift between the SDC and the military if you had no future in the SDC, and you had come to Beacon to both avoid getting caught up in Atlesian power plays and live your own life, both things that you risk losing by accepting.

You’re silent for some time as the debate rages internally. Both options carried incredible risks, and that made you very nervous. The eyes of your sister and Penny staring four holes into you didn’t help, but you did your best to tune it out. With greater understanding of the situation, you’d be in a better position to help Penny, but was helping her worth risking your life being taken from your control? After all, she seemed reasonably fine now. The risks seem great, and you have no idea of the reward. The only reasonable option is to stay the course you had been taking.

“I’m sorry,” you say in a low voice, “but I can’t.” You can see Penny deflate in your peripheral vision, but Winter’s expression loses its serious edge. “I told them it was a long shot,” she sighs, “but they insisted the offer be made.” Winter shifts the menus on the table so that each of you have one. The mood relaxes again as your older sister browses the drinks on display.

“Of course, dealing with irresponsible teenagers isn’t the only reason I’m here.” A waitress finally comes after seeing your group browsing at last. You order what you get every time you come to a place like this and ask Winter, “You’re on vacation?” She shoots you a half-serious glare as she explains, “Don’t joke about that. I had to use one of my vacation days to set up this conversation. The only reason I get to stick around is because I was asked mid-trip to aid Vale’s police force in locating Roman Torchwick, and I’m still not getting that day back.”

You hum a bit, and Penny asks the question that you hadn’t finished forming yourself. “Why are you looking for him?” Winter shrugs as the food in placed in front of you. “I’ve been asked to,” she answers, “Evidently, he’s planning some sort of heist. Perhaps Atlas thought having me assist would improve inter-Kingdom relationships.” Winter didn’t mention any relation you may have had with identifying Torchwick as a suspect. Maybe Ozpin hadn’t revealed that information when he passed it on to whoever had sent it to Winter? The case may be out of your hands, but it was in Winter’s, and you couldn’t deny a sense of gnawing curiosity, a desire to learn how things were going.

>A) Ask about Roman. “What else has this guy been up to?”
>B) Ask about the heist. “Any idea what he’s trying to rob?”
>C) Forget the case, ask about Winter. “Is that really all you’re going to be doing?”

Let's get more insight into hatman.

Hm, so, Winter wasn't gunning for him in the canon timeline. Wonder if things just got tougher for him? But then, Roman has some very powerful allies, so even big sis Schnee might not slow him down.

>>1728374
Have to say, I'm glad to see a choice that divided us. Usually most of us gravitate to certain choices, usually ones that make Whitaker the reasonable nice guy. While that's perfectly okay (and establishes a consistent personality for him), it's good we have the more divisive ones like this.

“What else has this guy been up to?” The question is an honest one, asked with the best of intentions, but Winter is nothing if not a stickler for protocol. “I’m working on the case, Whitaker, you know I can’t share those kinds of details,” she explains in a patient voice, not even looking up from her coffee. You understand that, of course. More than professionalism relied on any unnecessary details being kept from people who weren’t working on it, but something ate at you.

Because of you, Winter was on a collision course with a wanted criminal. Your desire to know was soon supported by both your natural curiosity and the ever-present desire to protect, and eclipsed any consideration you may have had for proper procedure. Penny was still there, and it may embarrass you for her to see this, but you knew a surefire way to get Winter to talk. It begins with a small whine.

“Winter…” Both of your dining partners looked away from whatever held their attention and towards you. Penny had never heard your voice do that, but Winter knew exactly what you were doing.

“No, Whitaker, this is a serious-” She cuts herself off as she makes the same mistake she always does. Winter looks you in the eyes and sees them start to water. Her face twists with involuntary guilt, and even though you both know it’s a trick, she can’t look away. Finally, the dam breaks and she slams her hands over her eyes.

“Fine! Fine, just STOP that!” You have to wipe your conjured tears away before they begin to fall, and Winter does the same to her own. She always cried when you or Weiss started to. It made training the two of you very difficult, since she lived by the creed that instructors needed to be tough. When Winter collects herself, she begins with an angry sigh.

“Torchwick has been hounding Vale for years, in different ways on different days. Recently, though, he’s settled onto one target. Dust. He’ll take any that he can reach, without leaving the Kingdom. The police have had people looking into why, but as far as anyone knows, it’s just to carry out something bigger. He hasn’t gained any notable contacts who may be buying it all, and the supplies of recovered stolen dust haven’t been increasing, so he must be hoarding it.”

You hold back a displeased grunt. You knew all of that already. Well, not all of it. Now you know that he’s working alone. “What about what he’s trying to rob?” you ask. You get a groan from Winter, but to spare both of you the routine, she doesn’t fight. “We don’t know. The tip assured us he was looking into Beacon, but that doesn’t make any sense. Beacon only has weapons, dust, and books. One of those Torchwick already has in abundance, and the other two he could get from easier targets.”

“What about money? Maybe in a vault or something?” you ask to test the waters, but Winter’s expression leans towards confusion more than surprise. “I didn’t think Beacon had a vault…” she says, and you shrug in response. “I don’t think it does. I’ve never heard of one, and you’d think the students would spread rumors before random criminals would hear about them.”

“Hey! You’ll never guess who I ran into today!” Your cheery tone seems to wake Weiss up a bit. Has she been sleeping all day?

“General Ironwood…”

“Close! It’s Winter!” That pulls an honest gasp out of your twin, and you can imagine Weiss shooting straight up in her bed.

“Winter’s here?!” In lieu of a response, you pass the scroll to Winter herself, the same smirk you wear mirrored on her features as she answers, “Hello Weiss.” You can hear the high pitched squeal of delight as Winter returns you your device.

“So hurry up! It’s all our days off, let’s check out Vale!”

“Where are we going?” You mimic the question for Winter, but she offers you a small shrug.

“I’ve only been here for a day, you two are the ones who should know.”

Okay, to explain: I let them know (And I've posted it in an earlier thread) that one of Blake!Twin's name options was Gaston. So, there, you've got the context.
>>
>>1729438
So if we chose Gaston, we'd be a douchebag while our sister's an ex-terrorist?

It takes Weiss over an hour to get out of bed, get ready, and meet the two of you in Vale. The walk is comfortably monotonous, with no one conversation sticking out at you. Everything blends into a comfortable blur whose individual events you’ll fail to remember tomorrow, but the nostalgic mood will stick with you for quite a while longer.

When you make it to the docks, the place is buzzing with activity. Sailors and dockhands bark orders at each other, trying to be heard over crashing waves that existed only at some other port, but they’d been in the habit too long to shake it for Vale’s quiet river. A few stalls selling foreign goods and “foreign goods” lined the wall opposite the waterline. No matter where you turn to look, travelers coming and going bustled past all of them, and each other, in a mad dash to reach somewhere that wasn’t about to leave.

Your easy strut and your sisters’ more frosty airs carry a measure of calm that the dock is severely lacking, and as you move forward, the activity seems to slow the closer it gets to your group, and even raised voice lowered as you passed. By the time you reached the halfway point, the docks had settled to fit the quiet atmosphere the rest of Vale had. You were a little intimidated by it, to be honest. As if every bird in the forest has suddenly stopped chirping.

The spell was broken by a shouting man along the nearest dock. The three of you turned as one to the commotion and see a policeman howling himself deaf at an uncaring Faunus. The young man was idly leaning against a light post, arms behind his head and eyes tracking his own golden tail as it flicked to and fro. None of him could be described as paying the slightest bit of attention to the officer. His eyes wander, bored with the slight distraction, until they settle on you and your sisters and are thrown wide open.

Without another second, the Faunus ducks behind the officer and jumps to the next dock, swinging himself around the light post there and landing on the walkway. Unimpressed by his own feat of agility, he wastes no time in running away from you. You’re about to ask what that was all about before the wind to your left whips at your hair and you see twin white blurs streak after him.

>A) Stop the girls! It was obvious that he wasn’t even being arrested!
>B) Chase after him too! You aren’t going to leave catching lawbreakers to your big sister!
>C) Shrug your shoulders and leave them to it. You didn’t see what happened, probably not a good idea to make a rash judgment call.

All of Team RWBY is based on a popular fairy tale. Several roles in those tales were carried out by other characters, but a few weren't, which is where I fit in the twin. In Blake's case, her inspiration story was Beauty and The Beast, with Blake as the Beauty and Adam as the Beast (Adam's symbol is even a wilting rose). Gaston is the third member of the group, and pretty important as the main villain, but isn't present in any way in RWBY.

So, I thought, if canon is playing with Beast = Good by making Adam an asshole, the obvious play was giving you guys the choice of making Gaston Belladonna, this world's version of Gaston, a big dumb jock with a good heart who just wanted to protect smiles.

Great, and right in the middle of your day out. You pull a glyph from the masonry below you and feel a familiar weightlessness as you spill a small amount of Gravity dust into the glowing circle. A sudden shift in your stomach, and you’re flying, not after your sisters, but on to the top of the taller building whose corner they turned. The landing is simple, so you run to the edge as soon as your feet hit the roof.

You take a moment to observe the streets below and where the buildings have ferried the chase. You can see the Faunus bouncing between the street lights, your sisters only barely failing to catch him. Unfortunately, the three of them are perfectly willing and capable of flinging themselves OVER buildings instead of sticking to a path. So much for your clever plan.

You wait for the Faunus to lead the chase back towards you, then jump off the building, landing directly in front of him. He skids to a stop, and so do Weiss and Winter behind him. He looks to his sides, but the buildings are too high to scramble over before your sisters get a hold of him. He looks as if he’s about to surrender when Weiss lets out a triumphant laugh.

“Ha! We finally caught you!” The Faunus turns on the ball of his foot with his hands already up, but you slide yourself in front of him before he can officially give up. “Nobody is catching anybody,” you state, catching the other Schnees (and their prey) by surprise. All three let out audible noises of confusion, so you slide an arm over the Faunus’s shoulders and pull him to your side.

“You guys didn’t even give him a chance! I mean, all that was happening was he was getting yelled at, right?” You nudge your new friend, and he responds with rapid nodding. Neither of your sisters seem impressed with your reasoning. If you’re going to get this guy out of here, you’ll have to bluff and hope he follows your lead.

“Well, we can just go back and ask the officer, right Mr…?”

“Uh, Sun! Sun Wukong!” He snaps his arm forward for a handshake and you quickly force it back down. Winter was likely to break his hand if it got anywhere near her right now.

“Right, so, Sun, we’d go back and talk to the officer and he’d say…?” Come on, work with me…

“Uh, he’d say nothing happened! Just a little fight-” You drive an elbow into his stomach, “I mean debate! Disagreement! Nothing illegal happened!” You plaster a smile on your face, and both Winter and Weiss roll their eyes at you in the exact same way. If only Weiss had been here, things would carry on for quite a while longer, but Winter doesn’t have as much patience for being given the runaround.

“Where are you going with this, Whitaker?”

“Well, if you check the time, you can see that it’s getting pretty late. Now, I know you have an important day tomorrow, and Weiss and I have class. We could head back down to the dock, find the one officer to talk to, stand around and play ‘he-said-she-said’ for an hour or two, and get into bed about an hour before we need to wake up. Or, we could let our new friend Sun go on his way, we go on ours, and everyone gets enough sleep for the night!”

They don’t believe you. It’s incredibly obvious that, if they did take the time to investigate, Sun would be guilty of something. Irritation at your interference is creeping over Weiss’s features, but Winter has adopted a stony expression that you didn’t like. Thankfully, something breaks, and Winter lets out a small sigh. “You’re right,” she says, “Tomorrow is too important to stay up all night cleaning up this mess.”

Winter turns and walks towards what you believe to be her hotel without further comment, but Weiss will never let you go that easily. “We’ll talk about this later, Whitaker,” she promises, before stalking back towards the Bullhead launch pads. You and Sun let out twin sighs of relief, and he gives you a light punch to your shoulder.

“Hey, thanks for the help man! I don’t think I could’ve kept it up much longer.” He holds out a hand and you accept the shake. “Sun Wukong, in case you didn’t catch it,” he introduces himself.

“Whitaker Schnee.” The handshake breaks, and you’re ready to follow your sister back to Beacon, but a thought sticks with you and you have to ask. “Why did you run?”

Sun looks genuinely surprised for a moment, and give you a small laugh. “I mean, who wouldn’t?” he asks the air around him, “I’ve got a cop in my face and three guys with white hair and weapons show up? I think every Faunus alive would run from the Schnees.”
