———————————————————————————————————
You are lying on your back, your eyes shut. It’s a bit chilly; you feel goosebumps. It’s odd. Your body doesn’t respond to your commands to move. You hear someone ask you a question, a woman by the sound of it. The voice is familiar, but you cannot quite place where you’ve heard it before. It asks, “Are you sure about this, Jack?” She pauses. “Once you start, you won’t be able to stop until someone else frees you, or…” the woman trails off.

“If I wasn’t sure, I wouldn’t have gotten this far,” you hear yourself reply confidently. You don’t recall trying to say that though; it was as if your body moved on its own, like you were a mere observer in your own body. You add, “Besides, it’s not like I can afford to splice, so this is my best shot.” After a few moments, you say, “Way I see it, I die no matter what. In here, I have a chance, and if I die, well, I’m not in any worse position than out there. It just happens a tad sooner.”

“Very well…” You hear the woman take a deep breath. “Goodbye, Jack,” she whispers. You hear a hissing noise as something fills the space you are in. It kind of burns as it fills your airways and lungs. You find yourself struggling to breath as unconsciousness overtakes you.

Your eyelids flutter open, and you find yourself staring at the roof of the ship’s sleeping quarters. You flex your fingers and raise your arms experimentally. Alright. You’re in control again. What was that? A dream? A memory…? You shake your head. You can think on that later. You decide to recount your current situation to separate dream from reality.

You are Jack, the last of a seemingly extinct kind known as the Earless, whom went missing for as of now unknown reasons. Though your ears are what you would consider normal, everyone else here has animal ears and a tail of some sort on their otherwise human bodies. You’ve seen men and women with cat, dog, bear, rabbit, and many other animal features. You’ve been residing on a ship these past few weeks and rebuilding the muscles that atrophied during your centuries-long hibernation. The world appears flooded but is definitely the Earth you know. Some technology from your era seems to still function but not without a fair amount of issues. The people here speak a language you do not understand, but you’ve met those who speak your language, English, thankfully.

You stand up from your bed and stretch. Alright. That’s your situation. You recall finding a computer with Marissa, a mouse-girl, yesterday and a brief spat with Amber, a doggirl you know with something against the Earless. They’re both people you might consider friends. Who should you see?

>Amber. See if she’s doing better from yesterday.

With little thought, you decide to see Marissa. You want to talk about the discovery you two made yesterday. With a nod, you make your way out of the sleeping quarters. You smoothen some of the wrinkles on your new clothes and continue down the hall. Man, it is nice having some stuff that actually fits. You find the mouse’s study fairly quickly and give the small door a knock. It takes a minute, but she opens the door for you.

“O-oh! It’s you, Jack!” she squeaks, looking up at you. Yep, she’s the same as ever. “Wha-...What brings you here?” the girl asks, tilting her head slightly.

“I wanted to talk a bit about our little discovery yesterday. Is that alright with you?” you reply with a shrug.

With a quick nod, she responds, “O-Of course! Come in!” She gestures for you to follow her into the study. You do so and close the door behind you. As you enter, you notice something on her desk. Doesn’t seem like a book.

Taking a seat, you look up at her and say, “So, there’s still tech from my time in this world, huh?”

Staring back at you, she replies, “Y-Yes… Of course. I’ve heard that th-there are a few cities that are said to h-have lots of that stuff, b-but the captain n-never stops in them because w-we can’t trade in them,” the girl explains. “So… I-I’ve never really gotten the ch-chance to see working s-stuff up close.”

You give her a nod. So, there are cities that have more technology. That’s a good thing to mentally note. Maybe you’ll figure out a way to one of those places sometime. “So, some cities hoard that technology is what you’re saying?”

“I-I guess that’s one way t-to think about it,” she replies, glancing to the side. “I-I’ve always w-wanted to visit one though. I-it’s hard to do that without your o-own ship though,” Marissa adds. You give her a nod.

“So, aside from that, what did you think about the particular piece of tech we found yesterday?” you ask.

“S-simply fascinating,” she says with a smile. “I had no idea that those m-machines could talk,” she says slowly. To be honest, you were pretty surprised when it started talking too. It seemed like an artificial intelligence of some sort, but you couldn’t really be sure without observing it more closely.

“Yes, I’m surprised that thing turned on. I figured it’d just show a black screen. Computers are notoriously delicate,” you say with a slight chuckle.

“Y-yes, I recall that from our t-talk yesterday,” Marissa replies with a nod. “W-was it right to leave it behind though…?” You assure her that it was fine. That thing needed power this ship doesn’t have and would’ve broken on the way for all you know. It’s a shame that the memory was corrupt; it would’ve been useful to know what exactly happened to the planet. Where to take the conversation next…?

You take another look at her desk. “Say, what were you working on before I got here?” you ask, pointing to the object.

Her ears perk up, and she takes a look back. “O-Oh! That… Well, I-I’m not really sure to be honest,” she admits, picking up the small thing. Her small hands obscure the shape of the object from your view. “O-our divers brought it up, s-so I was studying it. I-I’m not quite sure what it is though,” she admits. “Would you perhaps know…?” she asks.

“Eh, maybe,” you reply with a shrug. “I’ll take a shot at identifying it though. How’s that sound?” You hold out your hand for the item.

“J-just don’t break it,” she says, dropping the object onto your palm. As you get a closer look at it, you recognize the device pretty quickly. This is an earpiece. It looks like it would hook onto your ear. Whatever company logo was on it has faded away, now only a vague bump of plastic. It’s black with a large button on the side. Under this button are two smaller ones. It’s quite light in your hand. You wonder if it even works still. It looks intact, but you doubt that the battery lasted a few centuries.

You look back up at Marissa with the device in hand. “Yes. This is an earpiece,” you state calmly. “It was probably paired with another device that’s in all likelihood been broken by now,” you add. “Basically, we would fit these around our ears to free up our hands when we were on the phone or something.”

“A phone?”

Right. Those things probably aren’t very useful with the cell towers probably being flooded and all. “Uh… Do you guys use short range radios or walkie talkies?” you ask.

“Umm… I-I think so. You talk into one, and your voice c-comes out on the other one, right?” she replies.

“Yeah. They’re kind of like that except over longer distances. You could call someone on the other side of the world with a phone,” you say with a grin.

“Y-you could?” she squeaks, seeming surprised. You nod, grinning. “Th-that’s amazing!” she beams, looking down at the device.

“Right. So, normally, you’d have to put your phone up to your ear to talk, so one hand wasn’t free. Follow me so far?” She nods. “Right, so basically we would link these to the phone and talk and hear with them instead. This freed up our hands to do other stuff like cooking or… other things,” you explain.

She stares at your ears. “So… Those things hook up to your ears? It’s so weirdly shaped…”

>”Right.” Put the earpiece on to demonstrate.
>Give her a “yes” and hand it back to her.

“Right.” You give her a nod. “Liiiike—so!” You place the device on your ear quickly. “See?” You gesture to the device on your ear, holding your long hair up and out of the way with your other hand.

“I see,” she says, looking up at the earpiece curiously.

You explain, “You see, these things were fitted for our ears.” You say, “As cute as yours are, I don’t think they’ll fit too well,” with a wink. Marissa’s pale cheeks take on a light shade of red.

“C-c-c-c-cute?” she stammers, looking at the floor quickly. You can’t help but laugh a little, ruffling her hair and giving her a few quick scritches behind the ear. Her large round ears perk up a bit.

“Relax,” you tell her, a warm smile on your face. Marissa’s tail sways behind her, and she takes a few deep breaths, calming down. You nod and pull your hand away.

“R-right… Sorry about that, J-Jack,” she says, clearing her throat. “Th-thank you for the demonstration. G-guess that device isn’t too useful to us Kemomimi, is it?”

“I don’t see why it would be. The components—err—parts are a bit small to make anything out of and they don’t exactly fit your ears,” you agree. “Not to mention the fact that anything that might’ve been able to use this device is probably underwater or in a city and nonfunctional,” you add. She gives you a slow nod.

“I see… I doubt it would be worth much,” she says in a soft voice. “Would you… Would you like to keep it? It’s kind of like junk for us,” Marissa states. “Not sure what use you’d get out of it, but at least it fits you.”

You consider her offer. You take the earpiece off and move it around with your fingers. It is true that it wouldn’t fit any Kemomimi. You struggle to find a reason that it would be useful without a phone or something to pair it with. That’s assuming that it’s a bluetooth and not something else though. Any bluetooth logo that might or might not have been on this thing is long since gone.

For all you know, there’s water damage. She never specified whether it was found in a dry place like you woke up in or got otherwise exposed to the salty water below the ship. Plus, you’re not really sure if this thing really would be useless to the Kemomimi. Maybe it would be better in their hands. They’re certainly resourceful if they’re scavenging old technology and building settlements.

Still, maybe you’re just a hoarder. Or maybe you like the way it looks. Either way, you might want to hang onto it for a little while. Or it could just be junk that takes up space in your pockets. Either way, you consider whether to keep it or not.

You decide to continue wearing it. It’ll probably do nothing, but you’ll look cool wearing it. Or tacky. You are hoping for cool though. You fit the earpiece on your head and grin. “I think I’ll take you up on that little offer then, Marissa,” you say with a wink. “How do I look?” You press two fingers to the side of the device as if to turn on the mic, grinning.

“O-of course!” she gives you a nod. “I-it looks good on you!” she adds quickly. You chuckle and nod, thanking her for the device. Sure, it’s junk, but it’s cool-looking junk.

“This thing doesn’t feel too bad,” you comment, pressing one of the buttons on it. It’s rubbery and soft. With that, you are a slight click! from the speaker. Then, low-level white noise has its waves hit your eardrum. Huh. This thing has power? You tap the side of it with a nail. Yep, it sounds pretty different from the click you heard when it turned on. Weird. With a shrug, you push another button, and there’s another click! right before the white noise fades away. That must’ve turned it off.

“S-So, if you wouldn’t mind, there are o-other things I need to study,” the mouse-girl says softly.

“Oh, of course,” you reply, standing up from your seat. “Thank you for chatting with me and the earpiece. I really appreciate it,” you say with a grin.

“N-not a problem. I-I enjoyed our ch-chat too,” she says with a nod and wide smile. You chuckle, heading toward the door and stopping for a few moments. Should you tell her about the power? Well, it’s not like it’ll be useful for her to know; after all, the device is pretty useless even with power since there’s nothing to transmit or receive. Plus, for all you know it could be dead within the next ten minutes of turning on, which would get her hopes up for nothing. Either way, you’re not going to stop and chat a little while longer. She’s evidently busy.

>Tell her about it
>Don’t tell her about it

After that decision is made, you need to decide what else to do on the ship. You already departed from the flooded city, so that’s out of the question. There are plenty of others to find on the ship. Plus, you haven’t eaten yet, so maybe you could invite someone to eat with you.

Unless we find something to pair it with the headset is pretty useless regardless if it has power or not. Though it makes me curious what kind of battery it has.

Even if that thing is useless without any signals to send or receive, you figure that you should tell her. “Hey, uh, before I go, one more thing,” you say, turning your head to the side and looking at her.

“What is it, Jack?” she asks, looking up from her desk.

“The, uh, earpiece. Just thought I’d let you know it still works. It’s not much use without something to pair it with, but I thought you should know,” you say calmly. Marissa’s ears perk up.

“Is that so…? Well, that’s certainly odd,” she says, frowning. After a few moments, she says, “Well, if that thing is still useless, I guess it can wait to be examined. Just bring it back the next time you see me, okay?”

“Of course,” you reply, opening the door. “See ya later,” you say, giving her a wave as you step out. Marissa waves back at you as you pull the door closed. With that, your stomach growls. Right. Food is pretty important. You start to think about asking someone to join you for breakfast when you notice Naomi walking down the hall. Ah, right. You haven’t had a good chat with her in a while. You wave the catgirl over, giving her a friendly smile.

As she approaches you, she notices the device on your ear. “What do ya need, Mr. Ear-protector?” she asks, staring at the earpiece.

“Just wanted to ask you to breakfast,” you reply, smiling. “And don’t worry about this,” you say as you point to the earpiece, “it’s just something that’s junk to you Kemomimi.”

“Right… So, breakfast, huh? I was actually heading out to get that right now. I don’t mind if you join me,” she says, smiling. “I don’t mind if ya join me. I sorta missed chattin’ with my dear ear-fondler,” she teases, elbowing you lightly as she began walking again.

You roll your eyes and follow her, chuckling. “Is that what I’ll always be to you? It was a one time mistake after all,” you say.

She giggles. “I like to make fun of my friends a bit. Relax, bud,” she says. “Besides, that was a pretty big mistake. You still owe me for saving your ass by the way,” Naomi adds with a wink. “So, you sick of the phish yet?”

>”Owe you? Ya know that there’s an expiration date on that, don’t ya?”

“Just saying. You seemed to really be enjoying that ‘big mistake.’ Besides, I was just making sure that they were real. Don’t forget that your kind weren’t really a thing before I woke up,” you reply with a shrug.

“Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. You went a little far either way,” she replies with a huff as she crosses her arms. You chuckle and pat her on the shoulder.

“Hey, I haven’t touched ‘em since,” you reply. “So, I can’t be that bad, can I?” You give her a hopeful smile.

“Yeah, yeah. Either way, no touching,” she says, moving forward.

“Yeah, yeah. Got it. Anyhow, to answer your question, yes I am very sick of phish,” you state simply.

“We all are! Welcome to the crew,” she says with a light laugh. “Lucky for me though, we picked up a bit of food in that city, so we get a bit of a treat,” Naomi adds with a wink. “Of course, you need to know how to ask. We can’t just have any old newbie taking up the sweet stuff before we get the chance,” she tells you, grinning.

You give her a nod. So, something other than phish. Fantastic. “You’ll get me some of that too, won’t you?” you ask.

“Of course. I won’t taunt ya like that,” she replies with a smile. “Of course, if you wanna keep bulking up like you have been, you should probably have some meat on the side, and the only meat available is you-know-what,” she adds. “Now, mind taking a seat so that I can bring us the food?” You nod and sit down.

“What was that treat you mentioned by the way?” You ask her curiously.

“Oh you’ll see,” Naomi chirps. “Now, what’ll it be?” You look around the area. It seems your normal interpreter, Winfred, is nowhere in sight. Well, he did say that he would only show up when you were alone. He must’ve seen you with Naomi and left before you noticed. Still, you’ve pretty much memorized the menu he gave you by now. You are sick of phish, but you do need to keep bulking up. Besides, whatever this “treat” is will break the monotony. Hopefully, anyway. “Just get me the phish sandwich and that treat you mentioned,” you reply calmly. “Is that okay?”

“Sounds good to me,” she replies with a smile. With that, she walks away, leaving you along for at least a few minutes. Though the crew had stopped giving you stares whenever they saw your ears a little while ago, it seems that phenomenon has begun again with the advent of your new earpiece. You brush off the stares though. You know that they’re all just curious. Most of them probably haven’t seen a device like that hooked to an ear, given that any device shaped like it wouldn’t fit a single one of them. They don’t stare for long though, a few tens of seconds at most before they move on.

Naomi soon returns with your food, plopping the sandwich down in front of you. Yay. “So, what’s this treat you mentioned?” you ask, looking up at her.

“Cup your hands,” she commands. You do so, raising your arms toward her. She drops a lot of somethings in your hand. They’re cold, wet, and somewhat smooth. You look down into your hands to see what this “treat” is. They’re berries. Quite a few of them by the looks of it. They’re all a dark blue color. You have an idea about what these’ll be.

You raise one to your mouth and pop it in, chewing and swallowing the small fruit quickly. Yep. That’s a blueberry. Pretty fresh by the feel and taste of it too. So, this is what constitutes as a “treat.” Makes sense. The fruit and veggies on board aren’t exactly “fresh,” so stuff like this probably not common to eat on this ship.

“What do you think?” Naomi asks, her tail swaying happily behind her.

“A million times better than phish,” you reply with a short laugh. You weren’t one to eat many fruits and veggies when you lived alone, but man are you more than happy to have something other than phish on this ship. The burger and fries yesterday were nice too, of course, but those weren’t eaten on this ship, were they?

“Glad you enjoy, Jack!” she says cheerfully as she sits beside you. “So, long time no chat,” she says as she begins to eat. She swallows her first few bites quickly, licking her lips clean. “What’ve you been up to?”

Sorry for disappearing yesterday. Also, I'm going to be straight with you guys. I don't have the motivation or time I had when I started this Quest. My time for running will only lessen as time goes on, especially as my classes start piling back on. It's been a fun even if short ride, and I thank all of you for joining me on it. I'm gonna take a break from QMing while I get my life in order.

As for this Quest? If/when I return, I will not be continuing it. If any of you want to "take up the mantle," you are free to. If not, then you can just assume everyone lived happily ever after. I don't know if I'll ever do another Quest, let alone one based on this world.

Thank you all again for joining me in my first Quest. It was really fun writing for you all. Sorry for ending things on such an unsatisfying note. I definitely won't forget this experience, and I'll see you all next time.

You know what QM, i respect that you didn't up and vanished without responding like most QMs around here, that's the only reason i'm even caring to type this, regardless i wish you good luck with classes and i hope to see you again.
