You’re almost ready to begin the plan that will (hopefully) net you control of the Soul Inferno. Your minions are in place, and all you need to do now is wait for the window of opportunity that Niazach discovered. Well, almost. There is one small, tiny problem that you have every right to be worried about. Right now, while you’re sitting here slowly smouldering as you're wont to do, both Usha and Feva are engaged in the worst kind of combat imaginable: that of words and high society…

~~~From Feva’s Perspective~~~
Things seemed to be going so well at first. Sure, Usha probably should have been the one to fake being Lady Desoleum at the Captain’s party… thing, but other than that you haven’t blown your cover. But then you had the dreadful misfortune of running into someone from every heretic’s nightmare: a member of the Inquisition, more specifically, a full blown Inquisitor.
You’re no social butterfly. In fact, you’re probably the second worst individual on this ship at it after Ember. You’re far more eloquent with your fists and with your spear. But, seeing as how you don’t have the latter, and the former would jeopardize your facade, you’ll need to come up with some other way to survive this encounter. And soon, before you lose control of your arm’s illusion from all the stress.
If you’re a die-hard lover of canon, I suggest you turn away now. Like all things 40k, the gauntlet runs from “worshiping the printed, grimdark word” to “over the top silliness.” Most of the time it’s somewhere in between. Others it swerves hard to one side and/or breaks this model entirely. You’ve been warned in advance. I do try to keep things fairly reasonable though.
Alternatively, if you’re not at all familiar with canon or want more details on something, just ask! You don’t need to have played the original Khornette Quest to play and enjoy this one. I’m sure someone (or I) will explain any cameos that come up if you’re lost.
All rolls go against a specified characteristic in the style of Black Crusade. You’ll want to roll under the characteristic value in order to pass the check. The more degrees of success (every multiple of 10 counts as 1), the more awesome of a result. A 1 or an 8 is a guaranteed success, and a 100 is a guaranteed failure. NPCs I roll for only crit succeed/fail on a 1 or a 100.
Best of three rolls when it’s called for, with a 1, 8, or a 100 instantly taking precedence. If multiple characteristics are being rolled for each 1d100 counts for its respective test. Any rolls prior to the call for one and those not linking said post will be ignored.
I realize that /qst/ is much slower than /tg/ ever was, but I’d like to keep things moving. Voting windows will be a maximum of twenty to thirty minutes after the first vote. Same goes for dice rolling. This week we’re going to try running Thursday afternoon (now) until 9:30pm EDT, Friday afternoon until about 8pm EDT, and Saturday afternoon until either we reach a good stopping point or I get tired of writing.
Note that we are temporarily playing as Feva here at the beginning of the thread!
That’s it housekeeping-wise for now. Onto the quest!
“Lady Desoleum, I am Inquisitor Ervig. And you and I are going to discuss exactly why your planet is now scheduled for Exterminatus.”
Time slows to a halt as your brain processes Ervig’s words. I’m fucked, you think. There’s no way he doesn’t know what the real Lady Desoleum looks like. But no, wait. If he does, why is he addressing you as if you were the genuine article? Is he just playing along? Or… maybe… he doesn’t know? And what does he mean he wants to “discuss why Desoleum is scheduled for Exterminatus?” Is he here to execute you for failing to keep the planet in order? Yes, that must be it. There’s no way he’s just making a social call to say “better luck next time, let’s get you a new planet to rule.”
...right?
“...do you understand?”
Ervig speaking to you snaps you back into the present. The heavily scarred, hooded and cloaked Inquisitor is staring at you with not quite a look of concern. You’re guessing you were silent just a bit too long there. You need to say something now, and it has to sound good.
You’ve never been a boot-licking loyalist, but you’re pretty sure you can at least emulate one in conversation. A few “Praise the God Emperor”s here and a few “Blessed is the Inquisition” there and you’ll be fine. Or so you hope.
“Ahhh,” you reply, slightly lowering your plate so as to subtly puff out your chest. “So you are why I was forced to leave my mourning for my citizenry and come to this party.”
Your voice is clear and without waiver, thankfully. If Ervig’s any the wiser, he’s not showing any sign of it. Instead, he answers solemnly, “So you are cognisant of having failed in your duties as Planetary Governor then. Let us find a table to as not to cause a scene.”
What do you mean “cause a scene?” is what you want to ask, but know better. “Fine, lead on,” you say.
Ervig escorts you to a table along the edge of the room that’s away from any other party guests. He does the gentlemanly thing by pulling out your chair for you, then sits opposite. “Before we get down to the business at hand, perhaps you can explain why it is you appear so different from your vid-casts.”
Shit.
You frantically try and come up with an acceptable answer. “That would be because I’ve always used a puppet for those. Yes! What better way to foil assassination plots if no one knows what you truly look like!”
It’s not quite a glare, but Ervig’s eyes drill into you as he takes in your words. The longer he’s silent, the more your anxiety builds. And the more difficult your control over the illusion hiding your daemonic arm becomes. It’s like a constant pressure squeezing your arm and weight on your mind. You don’t feel like you’re in any danger of losing control at the moment, but you don’t want to push your luck any longer than you have to. You’re just glad you’ve always had somewhat great mental fortitude.
Finally, Ervig replies, “It’s funny: I would have thought someone who was capable of being so wise would have foreseen the fall of her own Hive. Especially at the hands of a death cult. Or should I say, a lowly bunch of gangers. Did you not read the reports my acolytes sent to you, warning of a growing force in the Shattered Foundry? And if you did, why didn’t you send the PDF or the Arbites to squash the rebellion before it started?”
Hm. How to answer this one…
Perhaps if the reports had said something other than that I may have had cause for concern. I would think the Inquisition would know the difference between a handful of miscreants and a large force of aggressive rebels.
>>
>>1713453
“It was my understanding that the Arbites did step in, albeit unsuccessfully,” you reply with just a hint of annoyance for effect. “I cannot be expected to have micromanaged everything that went on in the Hive.”
“But such is the duty conferred upon you by your Oath Cog,” Ervig points out. “Everything that happened to Hive Desoleum, big or small, is a result of your (in)actions. By all rights, that gang should have been wiped out before they even got to the Foundry, or shortly after having claimed it. But they weren’t. Would you like to hear my theory as to why?”
You can’t really say much else but, “Why not?”
“I think they had help. Not just from the upper echelons of the Hive, but from a force from beyond. I’m sure you’re familiar with this broadcast…”
He slips out a data slate from within his cloak and sets it down on the table in front of you. The green-tinted screen blinks, then begins playing a video. With horror, you realize it’s the broadcast Ember made to the entire Hive. The one where she destroyed Lady Desoleum’s oath cog and where you killed the Lady by crushing her windpipe. There’s no way you’re not being played at this point. Usha may have done a number with your makeup and dress, but you feel a pit in your stomach watching your past self on the little screen.
“Care to explain?”
> [1] I was forced to kill my puppet or risk death myself
> [2] That broadcast was made after your escape, it cannot be trusted
A note of anger creeps into your voice as you reply, “You seem to already have the answers you seek, Inquisitor. Cut to the chase. I do not enjoy being toyed with.” Your arm bubbles a bit, but you wrestle it back under control.
Ervig lets out a small sigh. “Very well. In that instance…” His cloak shifts, and you can see the gleaming barrel of a bolt pistol pointed squarely at your stomach. “I don’t know who you are or what your goal is, but you will not leave this room alive, Heretic. And once I’m done disposing of you, I’ll see to it whatever allies you brought with you are swiftly ejected out of the airlock. Any last words?”
“Just one.”
“That being?”
Die.
With that, you begin to move. You only pray that you’re fast enough to avoid getting shot. In a standing sort of motion, you place your hands underneath the table’s edge and move upwards. The result is that the cloth-covered, circular table begins to tip and flip into Ervig. The opposite edge from you knocks into the arm holding the bolt pistol, and not a moment too soon. There’s a thunderous boom as the pistol discharges. But instead of gutting you, the shell embeds itself in the deckplates right between your feet. Chunks of metal go flying everywhere and sink into the fabric of your dress.
Ervig is just nimble enough to half-roll out of the way from being crushed by the table. It crashes to the ground and sends the finery atop it flying. Ervig comes to a stop upright, like you, and once again aims with his pistol. “Everyone,” he announces to the room at large, his voice amplified by some unseen vox unit. Not that he needs it. The party went dead silent at the sound of a weapon discharging. All attention is on you two. “This woman, this heretic, and her friend are not to leave this room alive. By the authority of the most Holy Inquisition, you are ordered to destroy them utterly.”
Oh joy.
You guess you’re doing this thing. While the dress Usha put you in isn’t form fitting, it is somewhat limiting your mobility. It’s item number two on your list of things to deal with, item number one being the bolt pistol in your face. For that, you have something in mind involving the throwing knives strapped to your upper arms and hidden underneath the half-sleeves of the dress.
In a feat of slightly inhuman agility, you lunge at Ervig and close the distance before he can react and pull the trigger. At the same time, you reach up into the sleeve of your left arm and pull out a throwing knife. You drive that same weapon into the crux of Ervig’s elbow, causing his arm to bend back as he recoils from the pain. Another ear-shattering boom resonates from his bolt pistol as it ejects a shell into the ceiling, barely missing you yet again. But you don’t stop there. You wrench the blade out of his elbow and slash across his wrist. The tendons go limp, and you’re easily able to pluck the bolt pistol from his grasp.
All of this takes less than a second. The stunned onlookers let out a collective gasp as you now point the bolt pistol right back at Ervig.
“It seems like yet another heretic is trying to kill me,” you shout to the room at large. “I should have suspected as much.”
“Do not believe her lies,” hisses Ervig. “You know me to be a member of the Inquisition. My word is law. Now be done with it and shoot her n-”
Before he can finish his sentence, you pull the trigger. What was once his head now becomes chunky salsa all over you and the deck. The blood spattering across your face brings you great satisfaction. But it does have an unintended side effect: the moment your left arm is coated in the thick, crimson liquid, it reverts back to its daemon form. You stare down at it, annoyed. So much for that plan.
Luckily, Usha takes this moment to shriek, “Oh dear! He’s poisoned the Lord Captain too!”
The crowd looks between you and Usha, the latter of which is kneeling on the floor next to the Captain’s unconscious form. There’s a brief moment of silence, then literally every warm body in the place pulls out a weapon of some sort. Knives, swords, stubbers, you name it.
“Usha!” you shout.
“Ah fuck it,” she yells back. “Plans are dumb anyways.”
There’s a blast of bright light as Usha’s form reverts back to her full daemonic glory. Between seeing your daemonic arm and an actual daemon, the crowd erupts into madness. The kind of madness that involves attacking the nearest warm body until it’s dead. Screams of terror and rage fill the hall, along with spurts of blood. Not entirely the result you were hoping for, but it’s better than the whole hall attacking you at once. Though you do have three burly men with gleaming short swords advancing on you.
You have a shiny new bolt pistol. Why not use it? You swing your right arm up and across the oncoming bodies. As the barrel passes over each, you depress the trigger and send a shell squarely into their chests. Much like with Ervig’s head, viscera splatters everywhere as a literal hole appears where their rib cages and hearts used to be. But you don’t have much time to savor the moment.
A nobleborn (judging by his finery) leaps at you with a rapier in his hand. He stabs at you twice, but never connects thanks to both your reflexes and him telegraphing his moves. You respond by bringing up your daemonic arm in a vertical swipe across his face. The daemon-infused flesh tears into the man’s face, leaving a claw mark rather similar to a large beast’s. He drops the rapier and tries to clutch his torn face, only for you to kick him away across the floor.
There’s a small bit of time where you have the chance to see how Usha’s doing. She’s beset by quite a few individuals with chain weaponry but seems to be holding her own. Each time one of them goes at her, she responds with a punch-like blast of blue fire and/or an actual fist. You’re fairly confident she can handle her own.
A loud scream from behind you causes you to whirl around. A voidsman, more specifically the one that escorted you here, is running at you with a spear in hand.
Much like the nobleborn you just dealt with, it’s rather trivial of you to step out of the way of the spearhead aimed for your torso. As the shaft hurdles past you, you reach out and grab it with your daemonic hand. Then you drive your right elbow into the voidsman’s face. Even over the din of people gone mad, you hear a sickening crunch as the man’s nose is utterly crushed. It’s enough of a blow that relieving him of his spear is trivial. You spin the weapon around a few times to get a feel for the weight, then drive the steel-colored metal into the cranium of the voidsman. He stops moving a second later, his body twitching as you pull back the spear and let him fall to the floor.
“Little help here!”
You whirl around to look at Usha to see she’s even more surrounded than before. She’s doing her best, but even a daemon can’t dodge that many weapons at once. For every one person she knocks down or kills, two more take their place. You’re about 75% sure that some of these individuals weren’t in the ballroom originally.
You look over to the double doors that lead into the hall only to find them both closed and blocked by brawling socialites. It’s probably a safe bet that reinforcements are coming in through there. You do recall, though, that there is supposedly a back entrance to this place. You just have to find it. So you begin working your way through the fear-induced, madness-addled sheep towards the back of the room. You use your spear more like a pole or a bat than its intended purpose, mostly because knocking people out of the way is more effective and faster than stabbing them with the pointy end. In such a fashion, you carve your way onwards until you spot what must be the anterior door.
Standing in the threshold is a gentleman dressed in Imperial Navy finery. He’s got a finger to his ear and is shouting orders. As you get closer, you catch the following:
“...send more men to the ballroom at once! And have the strike team outside Deck 6 move in as well.”
A strike team on Deck 6? That can’t be good…
~~~Back to Ember’s perspective~~~

You’re starting to get a little bit nervous about how the whole dinner thing is going. Should Feva and Usha be taking this long? Has their cover been blown by an ill-timed daemonic arm emergence? What’s going on up there? An answer comes to you, but not in the form you expect. There’s a loud explosion that shakes the walls and deck plates of your suite. From the sounds of it, the blast came from somewhere close outside.

Because it might not be related to us (no metagaming) and revealing ourselves too soon will fuck things up.
>>
>>1720320
You don’t want to reveal yourself unless absolutely necessary. Besides, it might be something as innocuous as some idiot mishandling a grenade. No need for you to rush out right away. Instead, you move over to one of the many vox units in your suite and key into the Fleshcutters’ frequency.

Almost immediately you hear shouts of “they’re coming this way!” and “fall back and regroup!” Along with the sound of stubber fire that you can also just barely pick up through the door of your suite. You very quickly growl into the microphone, “Someone tell me what’s going on out there. Quickly.”

“There’s a huge group of voidsman out here,” replies Crocus, his voice strained. “They bum rushed the perimeter we’d set up and are cutting down every person to get in their way. I guess Feva failed.”

We don’t know that for sure, is what you want to say, but you’re a realist. If there’s an attack on your section of Deck 6, it’s likely because someone spilled the beans. You just hope that whatever’s going on in the decks above you doesn’t see either Feva or Usha slain. But you can’t dwell on that for now.

Dive in and get shit done. Get Niazach to check other access points to our area, and secure them. Once secure, link up with us or we'll link up with her when we're done.

You curse something unintelligible either in Low Gothic or Daemonic as you slam the vox back down into its holster. You then nearly burst through the door to your suite as you storm outside and introduce yourself to the fray. Almost immediately, several stubber rounds smack into the side of your head. They’re more annoying than anything else, as they flatten themselves into useless slugs against your daemonically tough skin.

You glare in the direction they came from to see a well-armed group of about forty voidsman have taken up a sort of firing line down the corridor. They all have standard, non-bulkhead piercing weapons designed for cutting down normal boarders. Nothing that could really hurt a daemon like you. A shout from your left causes you to look the other way. There’s another group of voidsmen, this time around twenty, that are engaged in close quarters combat with your Fleshcutters. Your men seem to be holding the line, but every time they leave cover from the firing line they’re barraged with stubber fire. There’s no sign of Niazach, Rikiar, or any of your more important underlings.

I need to take about a 1-3 hour break here and recharge my batteries.

In the meantime, for those who don't watch Twitter: I may be hosting a Black Crusade text-only game set in this universe sometime soon. I'm thinking either Tuesdays or Saturdays around 2:30pm EDT, but wanted to get a feel for anyone interested here what their availability was like.

Well it looks like I won't be able to do any more updates today. I'll be back tomorrow about the same time. In the meantime, roll me a 1d100 vs a 55 for shits and giggles.
