All rise, this court is now in session.
As mentioned on my Twitter and in the last thread, this is a special session of American Arcana Quest, designed to allow for some fluff and general questions, recap basic events for new players, and overhaul the combat system, which took too long between posts.

First order of business is the combat system, which will be replaced from the existing overly complex system to a more narrative 2d10 system, using the four already existing stats (Proficiency. Knowledge, Charm, Courage) and situational modifiers. Fellow allies will have stats, in the case that they need to be themselves tested or help you, and they will have areas they are naturally better and worse at. Myths will also have similar strengths and weaknesses, but they will be more general rather than more specific.

As an example, here's fighting an Imp:
The imp sneers at you and raises its claws to face your group, a wicked smile on its face as it hops from one foot to the other.

>>Command? (Roll 2d10)
>Have Faust tear him in half with his claws (Courage +2)
>Use Faust's superior psychic abilities to confuse and overwhelm the imp (Proficiency +3)
>Attempt to contact the Imp (Charm +2)
>Try to determine which story the Imp comes from (Knowledge +4)
>Change Myth (Blackbeard, Velveteen Rabbit, Red Riding Hood)
>Order (Tell another person to do something specific)
>Item (Cinnamon Roll, Mad Bull, Breakfast Taco, Holy Water, Liquid Courage)
><Write-In>

Here, Faust's superior Knowledge and Proficiency increase Solomon's own stats by +2 and +1 respectively, making certain approaches easier or harder. If he switched to Blackbeard, he would gain +2 Courage, +2 Proficiency, but also -1 Knowledge. Elemental affinities will also play a part, but more on a '+2 for strong affinities and -2 for weak affinities' basis. Damage will be more general, rather than numeric. I'll tell you when someone's more or less hurt.

The floor is now open for other questions. I'm going to play this by ear, so it's not going to be as rigid as previous threads.

>>
>>1699412
>I want to ask about the mechanism for missing an attack, crits, and determining damage.
I guess I'll answer this to start off.
>Missing an attack
I will have a hidden DC for certain actions. The reason why it's hidden instead of direct is to give you the opportunity to feel out and discover weaknesses. A near miss will result in less damage, a very bad roll will result in no damage.
>Crits
A base 2 is always considered a miss, and overrides other rolls unless there is a critical hit (a base 20) present. Critical hits will always down an enemy, meaning that if they are a single non-Monster enemy, they will immediately try to negotiate, if they are in a group they will not take their next turn, and if they are a Monster the whole party will gain a temporary buff.
>Damage
Less numeric, more narrative. I'll have a general idea of how much damage you do, but since people seem not to like me taking the time to work with a lot of numbers, I'm not going to. I'll just indicate 'how much' damage you do with an adjective, like 'Massive' or 'Sicknasty'.

Personally speaking, I actually rather enjoyed your combat system, but admittedly it is overly complex and bogs things down. I'm curious how the ew combat system will affect specifically Faust, because of his Devour ability.
>>
>>1699455
Right, thanks for answering. The old combat system was neat but I know that some anons are intimidated by it. Maybe this way you'll have more votes during combat.

>I want to know more about the characters.
>>
>>1699460
>I'm curious how the ew combat system will affect specifically Faust, because of his Devour ability.
This is the answer I have for that: Faust will gain stats like you do. So feed him a Hero Curse and his Courage will slowly increase until it advances.
In fact, I need to give him Charm +1 due to devouring Donna's Monster.
>+0->+1: 3 points
>+1->+2: 7 points
>+2->+3: 12 points
>+3->+4: 18 points
>+4->+5: 26 Points
I'll find some way to integrate his unique powers, perhaps as a one-time use ability.

Sofia Carollo

>1/2/2/4
Ruth Florez
>2/2/3/2
Donna Price

Yes. This will ultimately depend on your Camaraderie with them.

>>1699533
>How does Donna view David? Call me dense but I don't get her hinted fascination with him.
She sees him as cute, mysterious, and easily manipulable. She's not interested in him so much as she is finding out why he's so evasive about his past. And fantasizing about the male party members waiting on her hand and foot.
>Will the character in Solomon's flashback make an appearance or play a part in the narrative?
Yes, he will. The devil intends to collect his due. The payment will depend on your actions.

WHEW, Anon with the juicy question.
>>

Donna and Keith argue. A lot. So much so that the party starts to bet on whether they break out fighting or hatefuck first. Ruth tries to help, but only succeeds a bit. If Martinez joins the party, he also argues with Donna and Keith. Mr. Bennett exasperates his liver issues.
All in all, nobody dies, but it's pretty much Dysfunction Junction what's your function?
>>1699603
>I was curious what it could be when you said she wasn't a fujoshi.
One of her most common google searches is 'MMMF'.

>Say, hypothetically, we tried to pull something like this: what would happen?
Mr. Bennett would invite you into the Witching Hour and then seat you in the Siege Perilous, where you could hear all the girls state exactly what they think of you- the chair amplifies his powers. Then he cranks the power up. You'll live.
>Will there be an opportunity for an 'Operation Babe Hunt MK IV'?
In the spring, and in the summer if we get to that point. Or we could just run one if you don't invite anyone to the prom.

> What do Ruth and Sofia think of each other, and more specifically about the other's relationship with Solomon
They don't hate each other, but there is a little competitive tension between them. I think they subconsciously both understand that they can't get mad at you for picking one or the other. They would blow up at you if they found out you were double-timing, though. Like, your body would never be found.

As for Sofia and Ruth's relationship outside of their mutual admiration/affection for Solomon, they're pretty good friends. Ruth is a little odd for Sofia, and Sofia is a little too straitlaced for Ruth, but they get along. They don't really have a lot in common, except that they both play soccer.

Ruth Florez
Date of Birth: January 3rd, 2002
Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona
Height: 5'7
Weight: 144 lb
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown
Race: Hispanic
Scouting Profile:
Florez was recruited to Olympia by specific request, and has demonstrated a level of psychic understanding beyond other students, before she was chosen to come to the school.
It is unclear how she is able to perform tarot readings with such accuracy, but they are effective enough to merit further research. Her nature as a psychic does not seem inherent: Neither of her parents are capable of nor were aware of her talents.
The field agent sent to verify this phenomenon has come to the conclusion they are telling the truth and Ruth's powers are real. Further steps will be taken to ensure the nature of her ability does not provoke public scientific inquiry. By her own admission, her powers seem to originate with a mysterious ally known as the Phantom. However, when an attempt to contact the Phantom was made, he suggested she had powers of her own merit. The nature of the Phantom and her powers remains incomplete.
Psychic Potential: Yes
Unusual Properties: Limited precognition channeled through tarot.
Mental Stability: Solid.
Criminal History: No.
Role: Controller
Greatest Strength: Calm and collected, insightful.
Greatest Weakness: Lacks assertiveness, quiet.
Rogue Threat Rating: A (Containment method detailed in further notes)
Family: Ebo Florez (Father), Adalgisa Florez (Mother)

>American Arcana: Court is Now in Session
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1510882/

We begin with Solomon in a mysterious mystic courtroom, where the devil requests what he is due- Read's soul. It seems that the devil has made a bargain with Read, who can partially make out his 'real' condition, in some sort of comatose state surrounded by allies who are begging for him to awake and getting him medical help. We roll back to understand better how this all began, and start with Solomon's first day at Olympia Academy.

Olympia Academy is an overfunded boarding school in Crescent City, Texas, meant to help talented and capable students reach their potential. Solomon has received an opportunity to go and his parents accepted on his behalf after asking him. After he's finished unpacking, we meet Keith Allen, a boy who is tall and physically powerful, but a bit rude and slow on the uptake in some cases. He invites Solomon to go with him to a school assembly.

At the assembly, the group meets Sofia Carrollo, a conservative, uptown blonde girl who looks down on Solomon and Keith a bit, but soon comes to judge the two less harshly. Principal Brown introduces some of Olympia's rules, including that there is a curfew at midnight most days of the week. This provokes a lot of protest, so Brown steps aside to let Walter Bennett, the computer teacher, speak. Walter explains the school electronics situation and leaves so the principal can explain more about classes.

After the assembly breaks up, Solomon and Keith take the train to Crescent City's center, and go to Great Wall, a Chinese restaurant. There they meet Ruth Florez, a mysterious girl who gives them a fortune-telling suggesting adversity is in their future. On their way back, Solomon and Keith run into Sofia and her uncle, the owner of the pizza shop Sarpino's. Awkwardness ensues, and then all three head back.

A quick stop at the school's entertainment center later, everyone heads to bed, and at midnight things freaky things start happening. The moon turns red and a monster attacks Solomon before a man named Durandal blows a few holes in it, telling Solomon to come with him if he wants to live. Keith is also awake and freaks out, and then Sofia is attacked by a monstrous Captain Hook. Against Durandal's recommendations, Solomon and Keith join in the fight, getting guns in the process.

Soon after getting stomped in a tutorial fight, Hook recovers from his beating and makes Durandal job so hard Worf felt it. Solomon, up against the wall after giving Sofia and Keith an opportunity to leave, makes a deal with a mysterious voice before transforming into a monstrous Faust, who hands Hook his ass. Solomon basically enslaves Hook and gets another Myth he can turn into.

It turns out Mr. Bennett is not only the computer teacher but also a psychic mind reader, go figure. You head to a safehouse known as Avalon where Mr. Bennett monitors this strange place from and demand an explanation.

You get your explanation, which goes basically like this: Myths are figures from stories, history, and public consciousness you transform into to beat up creatures of the same sort, known as Curse. It's not exactly explained why Curses are bad, except that they're psychic manifestations of people's repressed or forgotten feelings. Which is bad, you guess.

Mr. Bennett's Myth is Merlin. Durandal's injury is just critical enough to require he never show back up but not critical enough to kill him. Mr. Bennett considers wiping your memories MiB style but eventually allows Sofia and Keith to unleash their true power or some shit, and now they have Myths too- Pythia and D'Artagnan. Faust has a strange book Mr. Bennett can't explain. You leave out Mr. Bennett's Narnia closet and go to bed.

The next day, you have breakfast with Sofia and Keith and discuss whether this is all a conspiracy or not. Then Keith nearly scares a girl over a foot shorter than him who shit-talked a friend from his old school nearly to death. Her name is Donna Price. Ruth is with her. Sofia chews out Keith for being intimidating and Allen angsts over his friend who was accused of steroid use. You start looking for classes you like.

You meet the most awesome teacher besides the psychic, Mr. Clain, who teaches theater. You get on Ruth's good side by performing a black spot removal ritual, showing that you're really, really enthusiastic about theater.

>On a side note, I missed last thread and just finished catching up on it. I'm hoping you manage to drum up more players, though I'm not sure how successful you will be.

Maybe this is a bit meta, but from who's perspective are the psychological profiles you've posted written. And since we've seen a few so far, what are the rest of the party's rogue threat levels?
>>
>American Arcana: Session II - School Bell
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1564962/

Oh, and Donna is also in theater. You and Mr. Clain discuss options for performance, and Donna suggests Antigone. Ms. Crew hands you a Mysterious Box™ containing a Mysterious Pen-Like Thing™.

You go to computer class, where you meet David Evelake, who is an endearingly flustered young boy who is somehow in your class despite being a year younger than the rest of your group. Another guy, Martinez, tries to make a joke about the fact that Mr. Bennett wants to talk to you later but gets BTFO. Bennett introduces you, and is apparently David's adoptive older brother.

You go to Home Ec. Adorable though he is, David can't cook, and exasperates Sofia. After Home Ec., Keith literally runs into David and they immedaitely become friends. Sofia goes shopping with you at a bookstore, where the owner Miss Patricia is a charming old woman. Sofia invites to buy you a meal, but it's not like she likes you or anything. Also you get a Camraderie level-up, which is like a knockoff Social Link. You go to Sarpino's and basically the whole group assembles as if by pure chance. You steal a slice of Keith's pizza. Dick.
Some background gets dropped on Crescent City and you eventually head back.

Mr. Bennett wipes the memories of Donna and Ruth and then herds the rest of you into the Witching Hour. You guys fight Curses and earn lotsa money. Sofia gets scared by the bogeyman and clings to your arm, but it's not like she likes you or anything. Eventually, you fight a Curse that's much stronger than the other two and nearly get art wiped until Keith saves the day with a clinch ice attack.

That'll be the last recap of the night, will return 9 PM tomorrow. Gonna work on that Discord. Will stick around a bit for any other questions.

AND THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES

>American Arcana: Session III - Facing the Monster
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1589016/

You go to fight Donna's Shadow Monster, who expresses her obsession with the fame that comes from photography and yellow journalism (heh) and you win. Donna gets a Myth, Cordelia. Mr. Bennett basically admits that he's not telling you everything but says it's definitely for your own good. Like a less gimped Professor X.

When you go to bed, you wake up in Faust's laboratory, which apparently lives in the middle of your mind. Thankfully, there are no dead bodies. This is where you fuse/summon Myths and the like. You get the adorably fluffy Velveteen Rabbit as another Myth. Faust mentions that you're probably going to have to create a Myth to take your place for the deal with the Devil.

More class stuff happens the next day, and you are startled out of your daydreaming by a trig problem you eventually get right, but not before messing up. You go into town with David, then Mom pesters you with a phone call telling you to go leanr more about Crescent City.

You spend some time in the arcade, getting second place at one of the cabinets and breaking up Mr. Bennett's high score. Then you play laser tag with David, and have a dramatic last stand against the bastardly Blue Team. The night ends with you shitposting on Anonymouse.

All right, with that done, I'll wait on more questions before either continuing the recap or answering them or both. For those of you just coming in, I'm Judge, and this is American Arcana Quest, a supernatural/slice of life inspired heavily by and possibly related to Persona. This thread serves as a recap for old player and an introduction to new ones.

Haven't forgotten you, have the Solomon file.

Solomon Read
Date of Birth: March 15th, 2002
Hometown: New York City, New York
Height: 5'11
Weight: 188 lb
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Hazel
Race: White
Scouting Profile:
Solomon Read was recruited for his academic potential rather than psychic ability, but has advanced alarmingly in both categories. The unique nature of his awakening raises many questions about its true nature. In fact, the precognitive abilities of the Phantom (see Ruth Florez) indicated that Mr. Read would be a major player in near-future events.
Certain information has led this researcher to come to the conclusion that Read has been empowered somehow, rather than awakening naturally. This seems like a similar occurance to the Phantom's influence on Ruth (see: Phantom Identity Speculation).
In any case, Solomon's potential and adaptability make him an ideal leader, but also make him dangerous. If his patron is in fact maevolent, continingency plan Roswell will have to be executed with extreme predjudice.
Psychic Potential: Yes
Unusual Properties: Unforeseen potential in the form of multiple Myth control and empowerment by consuming Curses.
Mental Stability: Solid.
Criminal History: No.
Role: Leader
Greatest Strength: A quick learner who takes to most challenges with ease.
Greatest Weakness: Tendency towards laziness and lechery.
Rogue Threat Rating: A (Roswell plan)
Family: Brock Read (Father), Jennifer Read (Mother), Olivia Read (Sister)
Five Most Common Web Searches, from least to most: "mythology", "Anonymouse", "Striped Socks baseball", "code golf", "Starcraft"

And here's the group blurbs:

>>Solomon Read (You)
The team's leader, a fast learner from New York. He has special powers that allow him to use multiple Myths. He's pretty cool, but he's also sort of an asshole when he wants to be. Excellent Starcraft player.
>>Sofia Carrollo
The secondary leader, an uptight girl who was also born in New York but spent more time in Crescent City. She's uptight, conservative, and a little insecure. She acts cold, but she's actually the most emotional party member.
>>Keith Allen
The guy who lives across from you. He's taller than you and an athletic monster, playing boxing and baseball alike. He also seems to be good at putting his foot in his mouth and bad on the uptake.
>>David Evelake
David is an idealistic and naive boy younger than anyone else at Olympia, who was home-schooled since an incident six years ago put him under the effects of an experimental surgery. Surprisingly physically formidable, he is Mr. Bennett's adoptive younger brother, and seems to be religious.
>>Ruth Florez
Able to foresee the future through tarot cards with the help of her mysterious aid 'the Phantom', Florez is a theater enthusiast who likes performing, singing, and cats, as well as roller skating.
>>Donna Price
Tiny and feisty, Ruth's best friend is obsessed with discovering secrets and reporting them. She also does theater, partially because she likes it and partially because Ruth does. Very easily angered.
>>Walter Bennett
Your computer teacher and mission control. He's sarcastic and drinks too much, but seems to care for the party, especially David. He's definitely hiding secrets behind the sunglasses he wears, however.

>American Arcana: Session IV - Letting the Days Go By
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1614379/

You wake up to find it raining, and that's good, because you like rain so much you get a boost to your rolls. After helping David work n his awful cooking skills in Home Ec., you go to spend some time working at the Black Cover Bookstore and bonding with Sofia. She seems to like that, and after you repair a faulty light, literally Leroy Brown shows up to steal a ten dollar book. That's forty quarters, and that's terrible.
You pay for it, and then Sofia offers to buy you dinner at Sarpino's. Still definitely doesn't like you, though, why would you think that?

The group later decides to go out to a roller-skating rink, where you talk a bit with Ruth and Donna, Keith makes fun of Price's height, and Sofia gets jealous, forcing David to skate with her. Florez explains her nature as the Christine to a mysterious entity known as the Phantom, who she says is truly responsible for her tarot readings.

When you get back, Keith confides in you that the guy Donna said had been steroids was actually doing steroids in the past, having lied to Allen before finally telling him the truth over text of all things. You offer to let Keith punch you to let off steam and immediately regret it when he belts you, causing you to collapse in pain. He buys you a Mad Bull to try and make up for it.

The next day, you try out for baseball and hit all three pitches thrown at you, the last being a home run. The coach and pitcher are both impressed by this, and give you a place on the team. You go to lunch and then study with the team until you all lose focus in the entertainment center. After a quick chat with Florez and Carrollo, Ruth provides an alarming reading.

I'm going to have to step out around 12 to pick up someone late. Will proceed to 5 unless more questions come in.

Seems to still be slow. Maybe I need to change my play time, but I'm screwed for hours at the moment.

Personally speaking, I'm eastcoast and your typical playtime goes pretty late. I guess that could be a problem for other people too. I'm not sure what you could do to attract new players besides maybe shilling on other quest/rp focused sites and communities.

I've considered swapping over to Akun or a play-by-post board, but I'm not that desperate yet.

>American Arcana: Session V - Hidden Power
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1634455/

Ruth's reading suggests someone's abusing their power and you're being fooled. You head off to bed to think this over, and try to overcome the school security before getting stonewalled by a trap reference to Jurassic Park Mr. Bennett put in.

On Sunday, you go to church with David, and meet Sofia there. Then you speak about all the stuff you've learned so far about the mysteries of the Witching Hour. Martinez planned to show up and study with you, but he doesn't appear, as he's surely busy with sports. It seems clear that there are more people involved than just you, and later hear about two Japanese businessmen who were killed in recent news.

Next time you go to the Witching Hour, Mr. Bennett offers a reward, which you choose to be to upgrade your Dreamcatcher. Somewhat unexpectedly, you choose the set of people who aren't rearing to go with you as your group, and cut down several Curses on your way, gaining the power of Red Riding Hood and devouring the Brave Little Tailor. You then prepare to face the Ruler-Race Curse present, who at first glance appears to be a Japanese businessman...

Only two more recaps to go. I'm probably going to have to leave before the next one gets posted, but I'll put it up if I can.

Sorry Judge I forgot you were going to continue.

>Laziness and lechery
Those are very strong words I prefer "pragmatic and pimpin"

>Faust suggest creating a myth to replace you
So it's our soul or an exceptionally strong Myth.

Apparently I'm a fucking retard, because I just realized WHY nobody else showed up tonight: I didn't post on Twitter that tonight was a continuation. I guess I just assumed people would pick up on the schedule.

>American Arcana: Session VI - Playing By the Rules
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1655161/

The Curse explains that he got screwed over by an American, hoping to trade some papers for his freedom but ultimately being killed, as the masked man said that they were useless. Somehow, he seems to have 'survived' his death in a sense, because he showed up here. Getting the brilliant idea to take over one of your bodies in order to return to reality, he attacks in the form of a scale cut in half.

You defeat it, capturing it instead of devouring it, for better questioning later. Just after you do so, someone makes a long-range attack, and you see a silhouette of a woman flee the scene. The other team, which is led by Sofia, is also successful, and you pass out during the car ride back. Apparently Bennett has a car that runs in the Witching Hour. David gets reprimanded by the girls for wearing socks and sandals in private.

The next day, Sofia invites you out to coffee, and the school temporarily blacks out after you complete your study program. You meet Sofia for coffee, and learn that her mother died in the past and she finds responsibility important to her. You convince her to put her trust more in others, and you two decide to make coffee a regular thing.

After ranking up, you return to test the computer security and break through it with the power of FREEDOM, allowing you to research some of the interesting info on Olympia and the past, including Principal Brown's involvement and the disappearance of the heir to the Clover corporation. Then, you have a weird dream where Ruth is apologizing to you in the rain, and ask her the next day as if it were not about her. Her interpretation does nothing to ease your mind.

>So it's our soul or an exceptionally strong Myth.
Yup. Unfortunately, a Myth like that would have to be EXTREMELY strong. There are a couple of ways you can get it, but I'll expand more fi you want once I get back.

Right, back, so sorry, had to pick up my little sister. She was hungry, so we had an early breakfast.

The most obvious way to get such a powerful Myth is by maxing a Camaraderie and then fusing the proper Myth from the item given to you and other materials. Obviously, this comes with another, special cost, which I suspect you will figure out yourselves.

The next option is to power up Faust and put him on the chopping block. This would also have a special cost.

You could also choose to flip off Satan and tell him he can go eat shit, but you would get the hardest boss fight possible, as in you'd basically be facing down Nyx, and I don't mean the Herald.

There is a 'Perfect' method of getting out of it, but that's at the top of Babylon.

This is interesting information, though I wonder if you might not be tipping your hand to much by revealing the path to the 'best' (presumably) ending.

Once again, see ya tomorrow, Judge

Well, what's up there is not what you think it is, and it is almost certainly the hardest ending to get. I figured I telegraphed the true route as soon as I stated that Babylon's top was the goal the two mysterious servers were guiding you to.
Besides, even if you find out what's up there, it may not be clear how you're supposed to use it.

> American Arcana: Session VII - Last Days of Summer
>http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/1675497/

We start back up with baseball practice, where Martinez bitches like a bitch about practice conditions. After Solomon and Keith tell him to keep his whine with his cheese, the Witching Hour shows up in the middle of the day for a short period, giving you an indication that Martinez's desire for affirmation and popularity has decided to take the form of a Monster.

Hurrying to the Witching Hour for an emergency meeting, you are interrupted by an earthquake that causes Avalon to shake and the Witching Hour's version of Crescent City to turn itself into an impossibly tall ziggurat. One helpful man and his less helpful female ally both to show up to help you. Their names are Virgil and Beatrice, and they dress in all red like restaurant servers. Virgil claims they are interns to a supernatural master and the structure is known as Babylon, while Beatrice does not talk.

After it is made clear that some sort of thing is at the bottom of Babylon and your ideal case is to get to the top somehow, you also learn that Martinez's Monster is within Babylon and go in after him. The floor below the entrance, which his Monster lies within, is a house party dedicated to mindless hedonism for the sake of distraction from the world's hardships (or at least as many hardships as a first-world teenager can associate with themselves). After battling past some Curses taking the form of Martinez's fanboys and tricking a guard to let you pass, you cross a dance floor to face Martinez's Monster.

Martinez's Monster has nothing but disdain for you and explains his frustration with not being treated like a golden god due to his sports achievements not carrying as much weight at Olympia. Ultimately, it seems he just wants to be cared about, and attacks you after you remind him that he's sort of being a douchebag.

And that's that.
Now it's open season for questions or other issues.
