The tunnels of Gemini's sewers echo with the joyous songs of taidaren workers, their labors set in time to the tempo of their chants. The mass of coordination has all the hallmarks of workers within a hive as they sing praises of their matriarchs. You watch them through their eyes as the sewers become grand expressways as the matriarchs or representatives of various clans are carried on makeshift palanquins by their children and flanked by their mates and bodyguards. The underworld has been turned upside down seemingly overnight, and clans are sending representatives from across the continent to determine exactly why and how, and with luck, to get a piece of the pie and ally with the new ruling clan of the criminal underworld. Your parasites chance hands, taidaren doctors perform their crude butchery in back allies and dank basements. Your influence spreads, seemingly without end, and your eyes and ears spread far and wide across the planet into places even your flies have not thought to look before.

New Construction Options

>Construction option patch notes<
Buildings are now planet or system wide networks. Each building can be built once per planet unless specified otherwise.
Increased yield for solar array. Increased cost and yield for electrostatic station.
Docking pylons can now earn credits by selling repair services to passing non-hive ships (ships from factions with treaties will be given services for free, including Server Ships or hive vessels of subservient queens.)
Weather spires now give bonuses to N score and can increase the defense of a planet.
Capillary Towers now give a bonus to Dev Score.
More to come, feedback more than welcome.

Defensive structures
>Anti-orbital battery grid – A network of anti-orbital batteries scattered across the planet, each situated in a fortified bunker complex fitted with stationary gun positions and intense hive creep fortifications. Each battery is a capital ship class particle beam capable of attacking enemy vessels in orbit of the planet, each situated in relation to the others to provide overlapping fire over any location above the planet. 8,000N 48,000M
>Surface to Orbit Missile System – This massive bunker complex houses a wide range of warheads and a nigh limitless number of missiles within its protective walls, allowing you to launch missiles against approaching invaders from the safety of your hive. The facility uses the ship missile stats and comes equipped with a single Cruise missile silo that can target any detected object within the system, five Stinger missile silos capable of targeting any craft within high orbit, and ten Swarm missile silos specialized in targeting high altitude aircraft and low orbiting targets. The facility itself is a massive complex spread out over several miles, and includes guidance and launch equipment, as well as the means to construct and maintain a stock of warheads and missiles. (1500N 2500M)
>Shield dome network – An overlapping network of bunkers crisscross the landscape of a planet offering emergency shelters for any local inhabitants to survive orbital attack, as well as shield emitters placed in overlapping layers set around important infrastructure and planetary installations. Like all shields, heat quickly becomes a problem as it sustains fire, as such a mixture of ventilation towers and subterranean heat sinks, turning a small facility into a massive, sprawling network of infrastructure. If the planet suffers orbital bombardment, this planetary installation will absorb all damage first. 8,600N 50,000M

Military Structures
>Military Spaceport – Extensive fortified maintenance bays and hangars are built across the surface of the planet, as well as infrastructure and manufacturing centers to support the production and maintenance of a planetary strike craft squadron. Swarmer fighters are produced at a constant rate with suitable range to intercept orbiting vessels or approaching dropships, while more advanced fighters and gunships of the most suitable design are produced and maintained for system wide defense and patrol Aerodynamic drones are also maintained in scattered hangar facilities to provide air support in the event of ground attack, and intercept enemy dropships. All craft are held in hibernation to reduce costs, allowing an entire planet's worth of strike craft to be maintained for a relative low cost. 500N 1000M
>Psionic Shroud – A single building built around the shattered remains of a Void Shard, the shroud amplifies the unnatural mental silence of the broken crystal within to mask an entire planet from potential detection, preventing outside forces from easily detecting the thoughts of a hive. (2,000N 5,000M)
Psionic Sensor Tower – A massive spire composed of highly psionically sensitive instruments and material focused on the detection and measurement of wide range quantum states in a vacuum directed at the space around the planet. Grants a chance to predict the arrival of ships approaching the system via certain FTL methods. The effectiveness depends on the method used and the size of the incoming fleet, granting a base chance to detect incoming Blink drive ships at 75%, Space-fold and Rip drive at 50%, Warp drive at 25%, and Flicker drive at 10%. Gatecasting ships from Hypergates and Slip drive is not effected. (20KN, 30KM)
Economic Structures
>Docking Pylon – A large spire or station that contains space for docking and construction of 4 ships, or a single capital ship if placed in orbit. By default is used to produce hive vessels, but can be made to offer repair services to passing ships in return for credits or other acceptable transaction fees. 100N 300M
>>
>>1698270
A full number, wooo!
>>
>>1698315
>Weather Spire network – A networked collection of spires spread across a planet capable of studying and altering a planet’s climate and atmosphere. Construction includes the building of all spires needed to function. While the spires can manipulate a planet's climate towards any desired effect, by default the spires will attempt to optimize a planet's fertility and habitability for hive life and its primary crop strains, increasing a planet's base N score by 5. Alternatively, the spires can work to create intense storms and thicken the local ionosphere, reducing N score by 5 and imparting a penalty to enemy craft within the atmosphere and blocking enemy communications to and from orbit, as well as disrupting sensors of orbiting ships. This option is not available for planets with naturally turbulent and disruptive climates. (8,000N 20,000M)
>Orbital solar array – A station placed in orbit of the local star equipped with a membrane of photosynthetic cells several kilometers in diameter capable of producing a steady stream of nutrient income. Due to practical constraints of logistics, a star system can support up to five solar arrays. Must be built around a main sequence star. Provides 1500N per day total (5,000N 5,000M)
>Orbital electroponic station – An orbital instillation built near a large source of hydrogen used to fuel a large fusion core, which in turn provides electrical power to a contained algae farm facility. Must be built in orbit of a gas giant. Provides +2000N per day and doubles as a gas mining facility, refueling the tritium stores of any ships in the system. The station itself can serve as the hub of a space city with additional investment. (3000M)
>Algae Farm – A carved out space used to utilize Leeland’s natural electrical field to cultivate food. +100N per day, 1 worker to maintain.
>Hydroponic platform – A floating greenhouse platform used to grow farmland through hydroponics that can only be built on or near water with open access to plentiful sunlight. Each greenhouse platform supports roughly one hectare and requires a single worker to tend the crop and maintain the platform. Multiple platforms can be connected together to create fields of floating farmland. +200N per day, 1 worker to maintain.
>Filter towers – A large underwater pylon built to extract raw nutrients from the microbial life of the surrounding ecosystem. Can only be used on planets with bountiful biospheres and deep oceans capable of supporting large amounts of microbes. Provides between 100 and 500 N per day, depending on the local environment. (500M)

>Capillary Tower – This massive organic space elevator offers a number of logistical and economic advantages, despite its drastic up front cost and fragile nature. Shuttles or space craft are no longer needed to move resources from the surface to orbital structures, freeing shuttles for more important tasks. The counterweight station serves as a center for construction, with 4 docking pylons included on the structure to repair and build ships, while gaining a bonus to capital ship construction time due to the speedy nature with which resources arrive from the surface. The Capillary Tower can also spread hive creep and extract resources at an increased rate, spreading roots deep into the crust to bring up resources directly into orbit, allowing you to consume a planet much more quickly than normal. A Hive ship can construct a Capillary Tower if given the time and resources to do so, deploying one after 3 full days, after which it becomes the counterweight station, and must remain stationary until it detaches and destroys the tower to move. A Hive ship deployed in this way does not have access to its spinal weapons, but can use other features as normal. A planet can hold a max of 4 Capillary Towers along its equator. For each one, planetary mining or over harvest activities are doubled and its Development score increases by 10, this bonus can surpass a planet's maximum development, and will not effect its biosphere. Upkeep is reduced by half on planets with an atmosphere. (50,000N 500,000M)

Finished Research

Cybernetic memory extraction
With the continued assistance of Theseus and his extensive mechanical research systems, you feel confident in your ability to extract at least partial memory fragments from the largely cybernetic brain of the killed Smith agent. The data itself is both partially corrupted from damage and encrypted, but the process of extracting it has provided a greater understanding to the cybernetic brain, and future data extraction efforts should be made far more simple and far more rewarding in the information given.

>Shield dome
By expanding the power and emitter systems of a shield's primary infrastructure and spreading it across a facility, it becomes possible to project a protective dome over ground based facilities. Due to the increase in size, the shield dome is capable of protecting against far greater amounts of damage than a typical starship shield, however like all shields, the biggest enemy is thermal energy, which will continue to build up beneath the dome for as long as it is active, cooking the inhabitants if the shield does not fail first.

New Research Available

Data decryption
Medium (Very Fast with Theseus assistance)
While much of the data within the Smith mind was corrupted during the experimental extraction process or the trauma of the agent's death, there is still a good deal of encrypted data still intact. The data itself could be anything, from a revolutionary discovery to the agent's personal preference in music, or anything between. There is now way to know without decryption of the data, and the total randomness of the mystery has your thinkers begging to go to work.

Planetary Shielding
Slow
By adding further scale to the shield dome, it is believed that an overlapping network of shields can be expanded from a series of clustered protective areas defending a planet's critical infrastructure to a vast, near total coverage shield stretching entire continents so as to protect a planet's biosphere and widespread population in addition to its military and industrial zones.

Current Research
Empathetic Paralysis
Fast
In essence an attempt to weaponize the side effect of psionic probing, empathetic paralysis uses finely tuned and precisely targeted psionic signals to effectively jam the target's somatic nervous system temporarily.

Gas Giant Superstructure Construction
Medium
Using a mixture of space station technology and modified, miniaturized capillary towers, it may be possible to create semi-permanent or fully permanent hives within the upper atmospheres of gas giants, where a mixture of atmospheric static, wind farming, and gas mining can provide a more constant and bountiful resource income while providing a more robust frame with which to construct infrastructure.

Swarm Drive Tuning
Slow
By configuring the gravity thrusters to respond to the foils of other ships within the same formation, performance can be increased outside of a gravity well by taking advantage of a kind of gravitational slipstream created from the foil's unique gravitational effects.

Gravity Thruster Optimization
Medium
Miniaturization to the gravity thruster itself, as well as optimizing the layout of the foils across the hull allow for smaller strike craft sized ships to make use of the thrusters both when operating in atmosphere and when performing evasive maneuvers.

Psionic Thermokinesis
slow/mildly dangerous
An even more finely tuned execution of known tachyonic physics, thermokinesis is the practice of altering the energy state of atoms, but instead of altering their velocity, it utilizes a less uniform alteration to increase or decrease atomic vibration, quickly increasing or decreasing the ambient temperature of the target. It may take some time for your thinkers to successfully accomplish this feat, however, without also igniting the laboratory.

Psionic Conduction
slow/mildly dangerous
While altering the physical nature of particles has become possible, using highly controlled tachyonic signals it may also be possible to use the projected psionic energy to subtly alter and transfer other forms of energy in a more direct process than kinetic force. Your thinkers believe it may be possible to use alternate sources of energy outside of the target and potentially use tachyonic signals in order to carry that energy to the target. The early experiments have already proven promising, however it may be some time before the thinkers are capable of producing results without causing spontaneous detonations within the laboratory.

Memory Seed
Slow
By creating a miniaturized and less overtly useful memory crystal similar in overall function to the white crystals used to record thought by your elders, and modifying it into a neural implant, you believe it may be possible to create a kind of constantly updating backup memory for clones, agents, and even drones that would potentially hold its information after death. The memory seed would theoretically be capable of retaining the full memories of the host individual up to and including the very moment of death, and be able to preserve those memories long after the brain itself has physically deteriorated, a process that typically drastically limits the time frame in which memories can be gathered.

>Psionic Spores
Slow
While normally the hive spores used to spread infrastructure are little more than genetically engineered nanomachines, replicating and performing their function alone until their built structure is complex enough to receive mental signals, your mixture of psionic research and advancements in spore related genetic programming has made the idea of a psionically sensitive spore seem not nearly as far fetched as it once did. With a mixture of distributed networking and complex cellular reconstruction methods, it could be possible to create a spore strain that would respond to mental signals.

>Advanced Psionic Imprinting
Slow
With the application of psionic imprinting you are able to influence and alter the state of matter using only focused and precise mental signals. Your thinkers believe this can be taken further, using more accurate signals and more precise manipulation methods to imprint more complex thoughts and ideas more quickly and easily, and at a greater range.

>Personal shielding
Slow
By further shrinking the emitters, your thinkers believe they may be able to eventually make them small enough to be equipped to the carapace of a drone, or to the surface of an armored suit. At this time it is mostly speculation and an eagerness to please mother beyond all reason, and you cannot be sure what the limitations may be, but the thinkers are sure they can do it.

Available research options

>Psionic Cannon prototype
Very slow/Very dangerous
Detailed accounts of several experiments show the slow progress of Project Godsplitter. The cannon itself is highly volatile, and even the smallest miscalculation often results in the destruction of the ship, as well as any nearby craft. It can only be equipped to a Hive ship's spinal mount, and requires a functional Void Shard as ammunition. At least a dozen testing sizes were atomized in testing the weapon, and in the end it appears The Gardener never quite perfected it.

Can we do [covert infiltration] - our greatest ally on the CW planets our drones are currently liberating?
We already have millions of drones on the planets so setting up a hidden hive should be easy. And the spike in good feeling towards the hive can easily be explained away as gratitude for us saving their asses.
>>
>>1698474
No anon. That's not how it works.

>>

Why not? Is there a reason we can't set up hidden hives on the chaotic planets we have millions of drones on?

>>
>>1698474
Having one drone slip away into the sewers and find a place to cocoon into an egglayer takes time and a small bit of risk, with only flies to guard its chosen hive location as it grows.

It takes time to grow up to the higher passive levels, pretty sure. We could certainly start the process with a covert hive, I guess. I'm not sure if it being a warzone means detection will be less likely, or more, if they are trying to clean the place of Scavs.
>>
>>1698507
This is infiltration and espionage. If you want to risk getting caught leaving drones on the planet for such purposes then you don't realize how this works.
>>
>>1698516
We have almost unlimited military access to the planets, the CW sensor network, and troop locations. I don't think you realize how incredibly easy it would be to hide an egg layer in that situation.

It depends. Is the greater success of the implanted tals due to the benefits of the parasites in terms of health, etc., or are they due to the hive influencing them and unnaturally coordinating their actions?

If it's the former then I don't think there's a problem. If (if!) it ever comes up, we can claim that the parasites are merely beneficial and provide a competitive advantage.

If it's the latter then I don't think we need to stop, we just need to scale back how much we're influencing behavior until some critical mass has been reached.

>Request Theseus assistance for Data Decryption

Your thinkers gleefully begin their studies as you broadcast the encryption data to Theseus. Zero-One churns with a chaos of data exchange as the topic is distributed to any instance that takes interest. You watch as your thinkers bounce ideas back and forth from the digital interfaces and you barely notice as your human made trade ship, the Orphan, emerges from warp in valen space as the minds of its crew emerge into your thoughts again. They pass by without notice until thoughts of urgent distress begin alerting you to a problem.

Your clones stand in the cargo bay, the ship docked and secured to the station, as a force of security puppets and a number of human guards stand outside, all well armed. A ceph floats over to the door adorned in the uniform of a clerk, and the synthesized voice crackles through the station's intercom link with the ship.

"Captain John Spreckels, in light of recent activity, your trade privileges at this station have come under some scrutiny. Your presence is urgently requested by the station proprietor Elegance of Cresting Waves. Your ship and its cargo shall be impounded until further notice." Your clone hesitates to respond, his mind reaching out to you for guidance.

"Captain please, this is a simple clerical matter I'm sure. We just need a few moments of your time to sort this out." The clerk says as a human behind him is setting up an inflatable vacuum sealed plasma torch. He waves a tentacle at the human and he shrugs and picks the kit up again, hoisting it over to the side of the airlock door.

...a what?

And I say open the door. Worst case we claim Hive affiliation and make it a diplomatic incident. If we're already impounded then resisting is silly. It's like being pulled over by the cop, handcuffed, and then deciding to try to put up a fight.

If that happens our products should sell like hot cakes even at highly inflated prices as governments and corps. snatch them up ASAP to try and learn more about us.
>>
>>1698546
They made the obvious connection to the hive manufacturing FormOther products.

Now the proprietor, who obviously outranks our old engineer contact, sees he can get some leverage and wants to push on us in secret, or conspire against the Guild of Transportation with us, or something.

And of course the Valen may be able to 'hear' the hybrids' psionic brains as slightly different, though we can excuse that as an 'upgrade' as long as they don't steal blood samples.

Strongly advise they not act on any efforts to impound the ship and her cargo until after we have spoken to the proprietor. Otherwise there could be ... unforeseen consequences.

A plasma torch designed for use in cutting open airlock doors without decompressing the room. Your clone moves after the ceph as it floats down the hall, shoving one of the puppets out of the way as its legs quickly scamper across the floor as it struggles to avoid falling over.

"What the fuck is this about? I already had a contract with one of those fat scaly bastards!" Your clone says.

"That contract is being renegotiated in-house. You will not need to concern yourself with the details, but the station proprietor has uncovered some minor issues with your merchandise. I am unaware of the details." The clerk says simply.

"Bullshit."

"I assure you I am quite ignorant." The ceph says, your clone smirks.

"Well that much I believe. How long will this take?"

"As long as you make it." The clerk replies. A tentacle waves over a wall contact and a door slides open. "Please enter." the clerk says. Your clone steps into the small elevator and it quickly seals shut and jerks into motion, running up along the exterior hab ring up into the larger and rounded off valen section held far above the trade section. As the door opens, light flickers inside, and the room beyond is a dimly lit bubble of air held within a massive tank of water. You can see the surface off in the distance, where the rotation of the station has created a cylindrical tube of air within the tank of water where dozens of valen drift lazily. Large pipes run in twisting, endless spirals from the cylinder of water and out to all edges of the station while massive water pumps turn vertical tubes into aquatic elevators, sending valen all across the facility.

The small room of transparasteel leads into a closed chamber set into the wall. Your clone walks up to the door and presses the contact to open it. It beeps loudly with a red light flashing as a number begins counting down. Above you, within the cylinder of water you see a massive figure lowing down on a pillar of rapidly draining water until it leads into the room on the far side of the door, and the countdown reaches zero with another beep as the light turns green and the door clicks open. It slides with a slight squeak and your clone walks forward into a large, half drained pool. Floating in the center of the pool is a massive valen, its shell coated in gold leaf decor welded into the shell in glittering spiral patterns crisscrossed with small silver plates bolted into place like fish scales.

The valen groans, its jaw stretching as it extends its eye stalks from the water to see your clone, and its massive claws lash out, impacting the floor on either side as the valen sinks its massive talons into a pair of thick, rubber coated control pads. The claws tap several times, manipulating the controls until a translation protocol interface appears as a hologram between your clone and the valen showing a small window of text in the spiraling patterns of the trade language.

Hang on, if we send Spreckles after the ceph clerk, could we send a cloaked whisperer drone along with him, just in case? If we can use both memetic skin and psionic cloaking that the phantoms use, it would be next to impossible to detect without serious dedicated scanners. We wouldn't even necessarily have to reveal it to the Valen, we could just opt to have it hang back in the room the interview is happening in and passively read the whale. Or we could have it reveal itself if we wanted to show our hand.

"I have come to understand one of my workers has made a deal without my knowledge, and that your merchandise is of a peculiar variety. We have received a number of requests for their sources already." The valen's talon twitches, and a number suddenly appears.

It's a negotiating tactic.

Inform the Valen that if they had a genuine concern about safety, then they should have said something before we docked.

Now that we are docked, impounding our ship is an unacceptable breach of decorum. And if he does not reverse this action immediately, then other ships will come that will be willing to transport us from this station. The kind of ships that wouldn't be good for business.

Just release the impound, ensure that we have the right to leave, and then we can talk business.

"This is nowhere close to the agreed upon payment." Your clone says.

"No, but it is the down payments made prior to installation, minus the agreed upon minuscule commission. The rest of your three million and eighty thousand credits will be deposited after our shipyards have installed the reactors into the ships that purchased them, and after your impound status has been lifted."

"Then lift it." Your clone says through his teeth. The valen lifts its claw and slams it back onto the control pad.

"I did not gain buoyancy last season!" The valen shouts, its massive shell's blast of sound hurting your clone's ears in the enclosed chamber. "Counts and Remembers Secrets in Dark Waters is a fool with a rented name!" You recognize the term to be a grave insult. "But few transactions occur without my knowledge. The guilds will wish to know of this. They have leveraged fleets against such actions and I will not take any such risk in my station without knowing every single detail involved."

"Well I already told the last chum bucket I got the reactors in the Expanse on a world called Leeland. No matter what else you heard from your guild of assholes this deal is a monopoly right now. I'm the only one who has this stuff."

"Yes, and the Expanse is sealed."

"Isn't it still technically Union space?"

"Not in our eyes." The valen replies. "The Shadow Whisperers have taken every stone and star, and we will not leverage against them, but we will short the humans. You are a human, and you will tell me how, exactly, you received these reactors, and you will ensure me it will not bring undue risk upon us."

"The shadow what?" Your clone asks. You realize, as your vast mind scours the archives of human data at your disposal, that 'Xeno Formicidae' has no translation. "Well how about you tell me why you're impounding my ship? You don't want to sell my merchandise, fine, I'll sell it somewhere else!"

"No. If your technology offends their decree, they will all be returned to Leeland, and you will never enter the space of the banking clans again. Before that, however, you will answer my questions. >>1699425
Some story about some third party telling them when and where to pick the goods up from.We dont know who it is,just referring to himself as a "supplier".This way they cant trace the goods back to us via our clones.
>>
He's got a damn good argument.

Says he's scared of offending the Hive and is worried that these are contraband being smuggled out of or through Hive space. Now the Hive has to officially vouch for this supplier, or he has to be OK with a grey market. One of the two.

We started this trade deal before we declared control of the Expanse. Maybe we should just go public with the reactors now too. If we officially control the Expanse, and there's obviously-allowed shipping coming out of the Expanse, there's no way it's not Hive-approved. I'm not sure what we gain by denying it.

Here's what I think we do: We can still save the face of the clones by telling him to contact the Hive. He can verify for himself whether these goods are contraband.

If he balks at contacting the Hive about it, we've called his bluff. If he does, we can approve and the humans don't look like they've even lied.

Revealing that we have an exclusive contract is perfectly inline with what we just said. And how would we explain that:

1. We have fusion reactors from the bug world

and

2. We have a monopoly

Unless we're working for them directly. If we got them second-hand as a middle man we would have no basis for claiming a monopoly.
>>

That's a good point too. They haven't actually lied yet.
>>
>>1699472
Maybe it doesn't have a translation for the Valen? And since we decided to call ourself the Red Hive they didn't bother to make a translation?
>>
>>1699485
>>1699491

Aaaaaaah, that makes sense. Must've misread it.
>>
>>1699472
The closest term would translate to "small biting land based creature" which looses much or all of the intended visual comparisons that the word formicidae implies to humans, which is the most immediately striking feature of the hive to them, i.e. big alien ants. By comparison, "shadow whisperer" denotes the immediately noticeable aspect of the hive to the valen, which is "I can hear whispering from millions of voices when they are close by and it feels like they are literally filled with ghosts."
>>
>>1699481
I like this; instead of answering his questions, just tell him to run it past the Hive.

We (the Hive) can just say "oh, that one came from a human supplier vetted and approved by the hive, goodbye."
>>
>>1699489
Right. Worst case we jump a few small ships into the system and broadcast our displeasure about how our employees are being treated. Probably include something about how we will be certain to keep this in mind when entertaining future offers from Valen.

This asshole we're talking to should shit himself at that point if he has any idea the sort of negotiations we've recently been involved in.

So what you're saying is the Valen are scared absolutely shitless by the Hive

Anyone else think we can use this to our advantage?
>>
>it feels like they are literally filled with ghosts.

Dam and i though the hive was scary just for the humans.
>>
>>1699517
Obviously we can use it.

The Union is pissed because they thought they were so awesome, but then we said, "Sit. That's a good boy."

The Valen, if anything, were even more smug than the Union. They figured they had everything figured out, topping from the bottom, Union dying to defend them, etc., etc. Then we came along and were scary in the same way we are to the Union, but then even more so because of spooky stuff.
>>
>>1699521
Valen are at least as scared of us as the humans are. We need to show that the hive is capable of negotiation, diplomacy, and trade rather than just taking everything we want with overwhelming force.
>>
>>1699521
You know, if we never researched that "talk quietly" tech way back when, it would sound more like yelling than whispering.
>>
>>1699425
We should get our guy to say something to the effect of:
"What? You think I stole these things from Leeland? I made a deal with the locals fair and square. They knew what I was gonna do with the things when I took em. Even where I was gonna take em. I told em. Hell, I even negotiated a second load of reactors out of them. Check my ship's cargo, if you don't believe me. If they didn't want me to be moving this stuff, they wouldn't have given it to me. They're even taking a pretty premium cut - 80% of our gross."
"As for authority - I'm not fucking dead. If I were doing anything they didn't like, I can guarantee you I would be a corpse right now. They have more than enough guns to pull it off."
"Now I'm not sure what you mean by 'mind sealing' but is that enough? Your station has nothing to fear."

I guess the main points, shitty writing or not, are:
>The 'Leelanders' are technologically advanced enough to produce fusion engines and weaponry sufficient to deal with the Orphan.
>If they weren't cool with what was going on, the Orphan wouldn't have a second load of their reactors.
>What do you mean by 'mind sealing' exactly?
>>

I always like to think of anons disagreeing as just a debate between dozens of quasi-autistic quantum thinkers who believe their way, and only their way, is the right direction for the Hive.
>>
>>1699568
I agree entirely with the concept of debate, but it felt like we were getting nowhere near a decision, just a bunch of posts that had differing viewpoints with little common ground.
>>
>>1699425
"The hell are you talking about? Do you think I'd be here with another load of reactors if they didn't want them to get sold?" Your clone says. "I've got a contract, the only contract so far I might add, and if you want to send that kind of deal away then fine, I'll find somebody else to deal with. That's your loss, all you've done is let them know you don't like their goods. If you think I stole something, let me tell you that if I did, I would have never gotten this far, let alone gone back to get more."

Valen aren't a hivemind. If this guy weights the risk and reward, with our assurance, that this is legit, he may not want to spread around news of this deal and gain himself rivals trying to home in on his now-valuable turf.
>>
>>1699584
>Do not
>But offer to bring some token of 'yes my supplier is okay with what i'm doing' with the cargo next time - something custom-made using the same manufacturing techniques used for the fusion reactors. to prove he's not bullshitting and has good standing with the supplier. (we may, as a token of trust, let him keep our money frozen while we do this - we just expect our shit to get sold and add more cash to the pile)

May also be worth mentioning, if the Valen Bossman reveals he doesn't give a shit if the goods are stolen, that the 'Leelanders' did mention forbidden technology. But fusion reactors aren't forbidden technology (our clone can say that he was told as much), otherwise they'd probably be pissy about everyone and everything.
>>
>>1699620
>Valen aren't a hivemind
Of course they aren't. Did I imply they were?

That's likely the fastest way for a Valen to contact the Hive outside of whatever Q-Comm Capt John has on the Orphan
>>
>>1699602
No.
>>
>>1699633
Relatively speaking. It's still not necessarily 'easy' to appeal to the clans, and then go through more and more middlemen until your message reaches the Valen ambassador to humanity, who then goes through the human representative, who only then can go next door.

They've got an elaborate clan bureaucracy to go through, and every Valen in between with their own self-interested agenda.
>>
>>1699607
Part of the point is that every time we've openly jumped ships into a system it's caused panic. Merchant vessels flee, everything gets locked down. Sometimes there are riots.

Tossing some ships on their doorstep would screw with this guy's business. Hard.

Anything else that's weird that might crop up the Valen in general would probably be far more hesitant to question it. It gets them walking on egg shells.

One or two small ships shouldn't start a war. I didn't suggest a fleet. Right now they've detained the captain and the Orphan and are trying to use that as leverage. We would be applying counter-leverage.

Your second point is well taken.

>>1699667

Hmm, we could offer to jump Hive ships in to verify our claim. We could say if we go back to the ship we can easily contact the hive and get them to bring in a "small" fleet to confirm the statement. It'll be amazing how quickly the Valen backs off at that point since a "small" hive fleet jumping on could ruin his business.

Now I've got no idea what you're talking about bullshit about minds, but you need to calm the fuck down and put some respect into those head-trumpets of yours."

"And if the guilds learn of my trading, and they will, these reactors are sold on the open market, they will leverage their fleets against me and demand to know their source. If you can assuage the Shadow Whisperers, how will I assuage the banking clans?"

"You're a smart cookie, I'm sure you'll figure something out. Tell you what, if you're really so concerned, how about you place an order. Any kind of custom made trinket built in the same style as the reactors. Something cheap but elaborate enough to be obvious, and I'll bring it back with me on my next trip just for you. Either way, I'm betting you want to keep those banking clan higher ups out of this as long as possible, and trust me, I'd like to get them involved, it becomes a seller's market that way, but I'm trying to keep this subtle for at least until the Expanse nonsense dies down and the Union calms their shit down, so for now, I'm looking for an exclusive contract. Is that you, Counts in swamps or whatever, or should I just find a new merchant entirely?" The valen shifts in its pool, sending waves splashing along either side.

"This is worth considering..."

"You're goddamn right it is! You shit!" Your clone spits, muttering to himself as he paces with anger. "Fuckin impound my ship... impound it right up your ass more like it...fuckin over sized nob-faced squiggle-eyed saw-toothed..."

"I will release your ship. You will return with an ornamental shell-glave in the south-shallows reverse-grip style." The valen says. "However, the guilds do not allow much to pass beneath their notice. To hide this from them would be levering myself beyond my security, but to contact them freely would be a gift of good faith. I will give you some time, but when our current customers depart, I will have no choice but to alert the clan authorities."

"So can I go then?" Your clone asks.

"Yes. Unload your cargo. Quickly, and do not speak with anyone on this station. This must remain inside until I gift the news to my elders and not before."

"Well what about that counting fella? He knows about it."

"Counts and Remembers Secrets in Dark Waters shall be dealt with accordingly. His secrets will go unremembered, and uncounted. Now go, before questions are asked by others of our meeting." The door to the chamber opens with another squeak of waterlogged joints, and another countdown appears over the translation readout as water begins to pour in through pipes along the walls. Your clone quickly exits as the pool begins to overflow, sending the valen back up the aquatic elevator, and your clone quickly returns to the Orphan.

If we need to, we can just make a public statement saying we would like to expand our outreach to the Valen and that the first one to show up at the embassy to negotiate will receive exceptionally favorable business terms. The Valen are not of one mind and I'm certain there will be at least one with more greed than sense who will show up.

I'd prefer to do that secretly, but we don't need to shadowrun absolutely everything if there's a relatively straightforward way to go about things.
>>
>>1698341
We should see about a thermal energy feedable anti orbital weapon of some form. Cover the weakness of the shield dome with something that can make use of the problem.

Honestly, if his bosses are as pissed at him as I think they are, we can just tell them that our employers mentioned they were hoping to acquire a Valen, living or dead, for vivisection (they will have probably noticed how we've been buying exotic wildlife left right and center). They'll probably ship him out with us laughing at how they got rid of him.
>>
>>1699864
Valen showing up at our embassy is technically possible, but rather difficult for them. It could be interpreted as a "fuck you" move. I'm not against it, it's worth considering. But screwing with one Valen is one thing, while this could be interpreted as an insult to all of them collectively.

And they already had a diplomatic meeting with us. It might seem backwards if we suddenly announce "Hey, anyone who might wish to now meet with us...screw you guys who came early."

>He's talking about us taking Counts and Remembers Secrets
That would make way more sense, and actually be workable.

Anon already contradicted this and said it was a "joke", but I like your plan.

We already know there might be some mating rivalry going on (though the big guy might not really consider the welp competition).

We already have some clue that Valen are willing to sell lesser races to pay off debts (the con artist's backstory), but I'm not sure if we have any idea whether that concept extends to other Valen.

Its not really a priority for us, but having valen subjects who are there willingly will make it politically harder to deal with us for the normal valen society.

We haven't obtained a Valen before. It's one of the few races we haven't gotten our juicy thinker bits into.

We might have had a chance getting one from a "Unity raid" much earlier, but having revealed ourselves it's almost certainly too late for that.

Even a low-level one should be able to give us a wealth of cultural and historical information after we dump the brain in a tank. Remember how useful that lone Scav brain was during the fighting?

And we have no idea what sort of tech it might give us access to. I'd guess not too much, but there might be some small yet critical piece of the puzzle in there. Maybe their reading ability would allow us to tweak what we can already do "just so" and make it less damaging and obvious, for example.

Your clone makes it back to the ship as the rest of the cargo is unloaded. Automated loaders haul the crates of cargo out from the bay as the crew micromanage every detail, rushing the job along so as to avoid any undue attention, and in time, the docking clamps are released and the ship departs once more.

Elsewhere, The Hel's Angel slowly lowers itself into the outstretched docking armatures of the Hive's hangar, delicately touching down amid a swarming chaos of perfectly coordinated workers as they move a seemingly endless supply of resources back and forth. Lyle examines the minor damage along his cybernetics, scraping at the armor plating with his chitinous fingers.

"Alright. Restock and repair what we need, and we'll be dealing with the rest of these goons." Lyle says. "Sooner that meathead is off my ship the better."

"Aw, you don't mean that." Jackob says. "You have so much in common."

"The guy's a jacked up muscle head with no personality and a stick up his ass." Lyle says.

"Yes, my point exactly." Jackob replies. Lyle spits out several curses under his breath.

"Ah fuck you ya cunt." He says back. "How long's it been since I had a proper beer? We need to get ourselves to proper civilization."

"I assume by 'civilization' you mean a place with a bar that doesn't have a camera system or a bank ID monitor that also hasn't individually banned you personally." Dillon says. Now, no offense, but I think that list is getting short." Lyle is about to say something back when a soft clang echoes from the med bay down the hall. Lyle snaps his attention to the side, quickly accounting for both the twins as Dillon looks back at him.

"That fucker better not break out of the goddamn pod or so help me I'll chuck him into the nearest fuckin' star!" Lyle shouts as he rushes the med bay just as the door opens and a figure stumbles out.

And let face, the guild does have the info gathering capability to find out and the reason to given the risk that the deal may involve stolen hive goods and pissing us off

He may need to show the corpse or waters alive to give to the higher ups to show punishment been dealt with and situation is not doomsday
>>
>>1699999
Why'd Lyle bring them to Leeland? I thought we returning them to the Union, not kidnapping them.
>>
>>1699834
Counts is a Valen, not a Ceph lacky.
>>
>>1700007
Or the guy who runs the station just says, "He wanted to go with them. I swear. And hey, look, lucrative trade deal!"

And the guild doesn't care about a relative nobody, shrugs, and goes back to what they were doing.
>>
>>1700015
He needs to deliver the hacker to us first.
>>
>>1700020
Yep, we get the hacker and the face. And we need to decide what to do with the rest of the spooks since releasing them back to the Union in the current climate could be a disaster.
>>
>>1700018
No they will,

Everyone is scared shitless of us and of risking a hive invasion so they will demand every loose end dealt in, and the whale who made the deal just leaving is not going to fly

They will want either him alive or dead and his corpse mounted on a platter to make sure this doesn't fuck them over when they talk to us again
>>
>>1700007
It's possible, but this is getting into the realm of speculation.

We can at least propose it, and if he refuses we can decide then whether or not to press the point based on his explanation.
>>
>>1700028

I think you're overstating the reach of valen spies.

Lyle dives at the door frame, tackling the figure and pinning him to the wall as his arm blades unsheathe, the edge held delicately against the throat as Anderson leans back into the wall.

"How the hell you get out of the goddamn tank?" Lyle says.

"Easy with the merchandise. I only just got it installed." Anderson says calmly. His jawline snaps back with a soft crack as it suddenly recedes several centimeters away from the blade. "And to answer your question, we came to an amicable arrangement. One I am quite certain you are familiar with, although I'm sure it required much more effort before you were housebroken." He says. Lyle examines him, squinting, as if searching for some hidden tell on his perfectly calm expression, before the parasite within the two of them detect each other in a mental greeting, signaling their presence to one anothers' hosts, and Lyle drops him to the floor.

"Thanks for the warm welcome into the family." Anderson says as he rubs his neck. "Remind me to get a casserole next time."

"Is that the smooth talker fellow?" Jackob asks as the other two walk into the med bay.

"Yea." Dillon says. "Little shit, that's him." Anderson stands back on his feet as he looks around the room with feigned indignation.

"Well, so far I feel like I received better treatment when we were enemies."

"Oh fuck off and just tell us where the hive want's us to drop you off. We got a full haul of cunts just like ya to get rid of, we may as well start the bus tour with you." Lyle says. Anderson adjusts his color with a quick flick of his fingers.

"Don't know yet. I hope it's somewhere with a good climate. Something temperate and mild. A Geminise country side, or the steppes east of the northern Rhinelands. Though I don't think there's much on Aral of great importance." Lyle rolls his eyes nearly half way through Anderson's reply and makes to leave.

"Let us know when you find out. Till then avoid the acid vats. Or don't, I'm good either way." He says as he makes his way back to the cargo ramp. The other two follow behind as Anderson stands alone in the medbay, save the other dormant passengers wounded or kept sedated.

It is indeed a good question. What will you send Anderson to do, as well as the rest, Devon, Decker, and the Cortez crew?

That aint an easy out

There risk, stupid risk and just plain stupid

And it is plain stupid to try to get this whale that is implicated in this situation and using our agent to grab it when we can buy a random whale corpse on the black market that didn't have any connection to this situation or our agent

That the whole point isn't of setting up rogue traders, to act as fronts to gain intel and things we can grab openly

No point compromising our first agent just to grab a this guy when its cleaner just to let his boss deal with him and take the heat

>>1700059
No your underestimating them, they are competent, all the factions got capable spy programs and can find out if they put in enough effort

And whale mo is that they will sell info to save there skin and gain, he will need something to bargain with while also profiting of this deal he just took with us
>>

>>1700068
that wasn't the point, at all. My point was if we were to get the whale and they were to ask for his corpse back, that in that unique situation we could easily just send back a clone instead. I am for adding him to the family but I am not at this time arguing that point.

Gimme me a good excuse to get the valen then cause to me you are the guy with no imagination.

>>
>>1700063
Have Anderson go to Bedrock and start talking up the Hive generally and getting a feel for how people in the Expanse feel about us and how we can best assuage their fears.

Have Decker go to Path to monitor the developing situation there and help us make technical inroads in the government and corporate systems on the planet.

Cortez Crew we might want to talk to to see how they would react to recent events and the prospect of working for the Hive, but ultimately that's not of critical importance. Unfortunately, they are too compromised to remain hive agents. Once all useful intelligence is extracted they should be placed on a Union planet (the specific one doesn't really matter as long as it isn't an active conflict zone) with their memories mostly wiped.

You sure about that? The Union knows that the Cluster can perfectly imitate a person and their memories in a matter of minutes. Agreed, we should definitely remove from him. Frankly, I am leaning towards removing from everyone, I'm just waiting on QD to confirm whether we can do a self-destruct in a limited manner if we're worried about being detected that won't leave a big gaping hole or super-reconstructive nanobots in the person for the Union to look into.
>>
>>1700216
Basically, if we see that the Cortez crew are going to be put through a detailed medical scan I'm wondering if we can safely self-destruct the parasites at that point without leaving any evidence they previously existed in their hosts. Does that make sense?

You mean when they retire, from service, to a civilian life, after years and years.
>>
>>1700203
They can't remember something if they're in a coma in the shower the whole time.
>>
>>1700224
Ah. Well I would ask for a roll, but so long as you have a decent amount of time to prepare you would have a decent chance of being able to have the parasite remove itself without permanently harming the host or leaving any evidence behind, as any remains would be absorbed by the host body. It would be quite painful, however, like a bad ulcer or expired gas station sushi.

As for the parasite hiding in the body, it can pose as an organ rather well, although its proximity to the spine limits its efforts somewhat, which is why a highly detailed scan will detect it. If it were to unplug from the host nervous system, however, it would be able to improve its disguise by taking on the place of a kidney, for example, and be able to pass a higher level of scrutiny, however it would have no control over its host, or have any ability to use the host's senses for the duration, essentially making the host a sleeper agent.
>>
>>1700211
Where was that established exactly? While it makes sense I don't remember where anything said that they get deep MRI scans on the regular.

In that case (and I really hope I don't regret this), I'd vote for removing parasites from everyone but Devon and replacing one of Devon's kidneys with a parasite. That way even if we have to self-destruct the one on the spine we can still have him as a sleeper agent due to the one on the kidney. Even without senses the one disguised as a kidney can pump out pain-relief drugs when the other one disintegrates so there's no physical tell Devon would give away that something is happening.

>>1700291
I'd be fine with that too. Actually, in hindsight it's probably better. We can still track his location with a parasite inside even if we can't use his senses, so we should be able to follow with a fly/clone and/or see when he is in an area where he could be scanned.

I'll vote for moving his parasite to a kidney, then, and praying to Mother that the intensive scans the Union subjects him to doesn't reveal our little-buddy. We'll still be able to read his memories when we reconnect.

>Remove all parasites from the crew except Devon

The kidney plan will be considered the default plan to avoid detection for your parasites. Even when attached to the spine they can pose as a kidney, although on very close examination it may appear to have a tumorous growth (which is the head of the parasite reaching over to the spine) while a detached parasite will seem far more like a normal healthy kidney/liver/whatever organ it is mimicking.

I think that's it for tonight story-wise, although I would like to take advantage of the back end of the thread to address any questions, issues, or feedback for the new construction and espionage systems, as well as any construction you may wish to vote on.

Well if I see people talking about a target I'll call a vote, otherwise it's up to you to deploy a hidden hive on a target world and what to set them at. For the initial update, I just pre-set them at a level that relates to what you have been doing with them manually up until now, and please feel free to recommend new Actions or Operations if you find anything missing.

>>1700350
It will tend to depend entirely on the planet itself and the modifiers therein, but on average, it may take a few days for a hive to climb the ladder from one level to another, and the higher the level the longer it will take. Lower populations take less time, so space cities can be infiltrated much faster, but tend to be harder to initially infiltrate. If you have control of a planet's shipping or smuggling sectors, you can simply ship agents to such a location in order to start an espionage hive.

>>1700358
Yes, it does, I just forgot to list it because I'm a dummy. As for the Commonwealth, it would be very easy to start one with hive drones everywhere and nobody noticing or paying any mind, but it may become much more difficult after combat when the cleanup begins as the populace starts sweeping through the war torn cities to begin repairs. You have no real way of knowing what these planets' baselines are outside of a full invasion.

The OQ already orbitally bombarded it once. We probably want a few shields at least around our surface to orbit cannons and primary hive clusters.

>however like all shields, the biggest enemy is thermal energy, which will continue to build up beneath the dome for as long as it is active, cooking the inhabitants if the shield does not fail first.
conduction m8, this applies to starships but there's no reason for it to be a problem when you can conduct heat away into the ground below you
>>
>>1700683
That could solve the problem, but it still sound more like a possible upgrade for the shield dome.
>>
>>1700732
an upgrade would be building cooling rods way down into the earth, but even just the fact that the facility is in contact with the ground mostly invalidates the overheating problem, i.e. there would likely be no overheating unless something is creating a lot of extra heat inside

fact is that shields causing overheating problems is fluffed heavily towards starships where it makes perfect sense, but that just breaks both ways if you try to apply it to ground based shields
>>
>>1700736
Maybe he meant that a thermic bolt such as blasters would still cook the air inside the dome?
>>
>>1700736
Facilities on the ground would have less of an initial issue with thermals, but dirt is a poor thermal conductor; without dedicated cooling facilities, the ground wouldn't take enough heat quick enough to make a long term difference.
>>
>>1700808
>dirt is a poor thermal conductor
it's infinitely better than radiating into vacuum, and that's how the ships cool down in space

so yeah, it would make that much difference if you think about it
>>
>>1700736
Well, leaving the ground unshielded to cool off that way also allows the shield to be bypassed via burrowing.
So it'd probably be better to only leave a few places on the ground open and run giant heatsinks into the ground through them.

The primary limiting factor of a ship's shields are the maximum level of heat it can store. The limit for shield domes is the maximum amount of heat it can vent vs the amount of space available for ventilation systems.

The majority of the shield dome's facilities is, in fact, ventilation systems, which results in them taking up far more space than they otherwise would, however when taking fire from high yield orbital weapons, they can still struggle to keep up with the level of heat being pumped into the shield emitters. It's essentially a bilge system for heat, and the question goes from how much you can hold before cooking yourself and becomes how fast you can dump it vs how fast the enemy can impart it. This is one of the main reasons why a shield dome is far more durable than a ship's shields, that plus the additional space for shock absorbers to protect against kinetic weapons.
>>
>>1701457
Well QD has spoken.
>>
>>1701457
So you're saying we should immediately begin scouring the universe for more advanced cooling technology.
>>
>>1701487
You already have laser cooling systems, it's just that a nuke or a relativistic projectile will impart more heat more quickly than any cooling system could ever manage to deal with indefinitely, although it will last far longer than any starship's shields would.
>>
>>1701503

Obviously we need to develop dimensional shunt technology and just remove the heat from the equation entirely by dumping it into sub-space.
>>
>>1701557
Well yeah, obviously.

>>
>>1701566

Also, that's pretty much how 40k Void Shields work, they take the energy from strikes on the shield and dump it into the Warp.

Now we can start cloning and selling them as loyal guarddogs, each one with its own built in designer organs (parasite) for a healthy pup

Also what did Anderson give us for Clone Templates? I'm guessing Anderson gave a bonus to the Tech and Mauser a bonus to the Brawler
>>
>>1701633

Technically speaking, don't we already go into a higher dimensional space when we use FTL? At least one of the Non-Void driven FTL methods has to use some principles of higher dimensions, even space folding would use some, and those would be viable waste-dumps for excess heat.
>>
>>1701694
Decker is a tech, just a better tech, so your current tech specialization has been buffed. Same for brawler and engineer (from Calhoun) as the crew of the cortez were hand picked for their fields of expertise. Anderson has unlocked the Spin Doctor specialization, weaponing charisma and deception to weave a tapestry of half-truths, outright lies, and subtle implications that make telling the truth a matter of a lack of imagination.
>>
>>1701503
Couldnt we dump the heat out through a teleport gate?

No, seriously: we hook up the shield system to pump its heated water into a teleport to an ice world, and teleport ice water back in, like a two valve system.

If the teleportation process retains relative heat, and H2O is such a simple molecule that it should be easy to mass transport.

We just turn our heat cooling system into a planets oceans.
>>
>>1701633
If it makes a planet technically invulnerable, I'd vote for it. Although this does make me recall our idea early in the quest to cloak an entire planet, making it invisible...
>>
>>1701739
You still have the matter of essentially being in a race to dump heat faster than the enemy can impart it.

This mechanic is essentially a fluff explanation for why you can't just put up a shield and disregard the attacking enemy forever. An orbital bombardment as it is would still take quite some time to break through a shield dome, days if they don't have any capital class bombardment weapons or cruise sized nukes.
>>
Would it be theoretically possible to specialize the Scavenger's skip-drive technology to "Phase" the heat built up in our systems to the outside of our ship? A form of passive venting that obsoletes active cooling vents perhaps.
>>
>>1701739
Mind this will probably not solve the problem of oversaturation of heat in a large initial volley. For that we should look into some kind of massive heat sink support structure probably involving some of the chemicals humans use in commercial fridge cooling systems, which would require some unique biology solutions to store and use without everything going boom or corriding into slurry and poisoning everyone.
>>
>>1701749

You gave us a problem and all the sci-fi shenanigans we could ask for, it was obvious it would lead to us attempting to fuck science into breaking the system.
>>
>>1701749
I am just having fun trying to explore solutions. My ice world idea has one massive flaw: What do you do to protect said ice world? Its a key initial strike point once identified. But yeah, i imagine the final stage shield tech will be such shenanigins instead of breaking the system
>>
>>1701754
I know and I love it, don't stop, I get a lot of the ideas for research unlocks that way.
>>
>>1701763
I am totally waiting for the day we go space gungan and have shield generator umbrella ships that bubble the entire fleet. So much what the fuck is that thing? is going to be glorious.
>>
Actually, wouldn't it theoretically be possible to turn the inevitable heat build up on our ships into a tactical advantage? We use almost entirely biological technology, our FTL systems functions off of NUTRIENTS and raw energy even.

I wonder if it would be possible to funnel energetic build up into what amounts as a free tactical FTL jump, or even potentially a suicide bomb if the ship suffers such a massive overload, jump as close as it can from the siphoned energy and let the dampeners fail.
>>
>>1701763
And we love you for it.
>>
>>1701763

Round hole, square peg. One way another that peg is fitting inside that fucking hole, even if we have to go into non-euclidean geometry and fuck reality as we know it in order to do so.
>>
>>1701774
Well we were researching using tachyons to generate heat at a point. We could theoretically invert that to use heat to generate tachyons to use as a mini warp jump of some kind, to power special weapons or to cut down on recharge time between jumps.
>>
>>1701774
You can extract energy from a temperature change. That is, in the process of making something hotter you can also make it do work (eg spin a turbine or push an object).
However, you can't do that if there's no temperature difference. The issue with starships is that they get too hot everywhere, not that there's a single pocket of hot and the rest is fine.

Mind, there's certainly potential, but it'd take specialized systems that would likely not be worth it outside specialized roles such as "wall ship" that we don't have currently.
>>
>>1701781

Or, we could possibly create a form of specialized brain-add on for our ships and fleet to use pyro / dynakinesis to manage such things. A ship suffers from heat-build up? It's specialized psychic brain laughs as it dominates the energy in question and uses it to fire mind-bullets of burning hate at it's enemies.
>>
>>1701781
>We could theoretically invert that to use heat to generate tachyons to use as a mini warp jump of some kind, to power special weapons or to cut down on recharge time between jumps.
Not necessarily. Many processes are irreversible in practice. You can't, for example, take a bunch of ash and thermal energy and smoke and turn it into a piece of unburnt wood.
>>
>>1701781
To note with special weapons:
We have the tech to create rifts that a ship can bring other ships along with it.

Shrink that down, stick the course in a loop via two of them, power it with a rail gun like assembly and charge up a shots speed for as long as you can keep the rift portals fueled to fire a kinetic round at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

Essentially an infinate length rail gun fitted into the size of a normal one, probably if it was the size of a spinal mount.

>>1701789
You can take ash, sunlight, air and water and grow more wood. Just is not a direct path.
>>
>>1701795
>You can take ash, sunlight, air and water and grow more wood. Just is not a direct path.
That involves outside elements, the sunlight, air, water, and new seed/tree.
The point was that even if you take everything that results from a process, you can't always reverse the process.
>>
>>1701799

Not until we have a true molecular furnace, no.
>>
>>1701804
Even then you'd have to input energy to the system for many cases. Entropy is a bitch.
>>
>>1701818

I wonder if we'll ever reach the levels of Psionic required to perform true extropy?
>>
>>1701826
Like QD said, we can use Void Shards as a sink, or roughly the equivalent would be a black hole.

Actually, I think the reason conventional weapons have no effect on the Void is because they have extremely strong shielding with all the stress being sunk into their black hole, so their shields never run out. Their whole deal probably has a lot to do with the interplay between a black hole (that has infinity time) and psionic tachyons (which have no time).
>>
>>1701633
AYY

Let's do it.
>>
>>1701633
Its a trap

That will somehow move the main story forward like the psi cannon
>>
>>1701984
Now you're just being paranoid. Re-read the sections of the quest that mention the void shards and psionic cannons, it doesn't quite work like that. The psionic cannons work by somehow drawing or amplifying the psionic abilities of the hive or it's queen, and in doing so somehow give the void gods the leverage needed to directly strike back at them. Similarly using the void shards to observe something elsewhere in space can backfire and allow the void to become aware of the hive. But the void gods can't do anything to us unless we use the void shards to do a roughly comparable action first.

Using void shards as heat sinks fall under neither category and so should be essentially harmless to us, at least if we use them with enough precautions.
>>
>>1702050
>Using void shards ... should be essentially harmless to us if we use them with enough precautions.

Famous last words. This is like the Union thinking they had enough security to deal with the "dead" "drones" at the Cluster lab. We don't know what we don't know here, and that makes any kind of use of the shards extremely dangerous.

While it's possible, maybe even likely, that the Void shards will perfectly absorb heat we won't know for sure and the results could be catastrophic if we miscalculate. I think we can maybe do some experiments with using Void shards as shield absorbers in extremely isolated facilities far, far away from Leeland. But honestly any experiments should be done out of our sight (possibly by asking Theseus to conduct the research) or the risk that it could provoke an OQ attack or worse due to the Void watching us currently is unacceptably high.
>>
>>1702132
Well, it goes without saying that any experiment involving void shards should be performed as far away from any sort of key hive infrastructure under the greatest possible security. But what we're discussing here isn't actively 'using' a void shard like we would in the firing sequence of a psionic cannon. Theoretically this is even less involved than using one as a crystal ball, since that involves extending our psionic awareness through sub-space and into the void god's domain.

No, what we're talking about is simply funneling absurd amounts of thermal energy into a void shard. There wouldn't be any extending any aspect of our own psionic being into the void god's domain, just a natural phenomenon of the physical universe (heat energy). There needn't be anything that would allow the void gods to trace that back to us theoretically. Although again, we would of course have to test this theory in the most stringent possible ways before we could afford to integrate a void shard into Leeland's planetary shield network.
>>
>>1702253
My main concern is that the Nowhere incident essentially consisted of dumping absurd amounts of power into a void shard, and allowed the opening of a portal for Void incursion and infection.

Heat buildup from weapons fire doesn't sound as dangerous, massive, or directed as five power taps all carefully focused on the shard, but it still might have effects in the same direction.
>>

Sounds simple enough, you could just hook up the cooling laser system to beam the heat into the void shard. Maybe have a worker push it on into the beam in a little cart.
>>
>>1703115
Maybe ... maybe this is a bad idea ...

to be fair, we could probably put up a hell of a fight against the Combine.

Maybe there's a safer way we can utilize the heat released from shield networks? Perhaps we could create a "deflector shield" type system that redirects energy from blasts rather than absorbing it. They would probably be less stable than standard shields, but could allow incoming attacks to be refocused against nearby enemies or to provide a boost for onboard weapons/engine systems for a short period of time.

I don't think we can explicitly complain about Void research AND boost our PR with the Union. They'd know the raid was from us otherwise.
But we could start warning about the Void and mention that it was the primary cause of the disaster at Nowhere to make them start reconsidering and opening up to us, who are more experienced about this, about their research.

I think we concluded that the chance of detection was small enough (especially if the parasite detached from the spine to pose as a kidney during the scan) that it was worth the risk of discovery for us to continue to have eyes on the Union inner-circle.

Hopefully the Union is in such panicked chaos and is so desperate for agents with a high security clearance they won't look too closely at the operations Devon has been involved with before or consider the implications of him briefly being a captive of Hive agents way back when we hit the lab on Gemini

I didn't want to talk about the Void so much as telling the Union (again) that they shouldn't even look at shards and to emphasize again how critical it is that everything be turned over to us.

Both the PR boost and chastising are minor goals, though. We have more important things to do today and we should consider them only once more primary objectives are accomplished.
>>
>>1703115
I wondered if we could just achieve a better heat dissipation efficiency in shielding by applying a cooling laser system through chimney flute tunnels, which are just byways for multiple lasers to travel through already supercooled air from surrounding coolant pipes with outlet air vents plumbing it away however many miles, though this is only two steps up from what we have as a method now and is specific to shielding.

Though my limited understanding of thermal dynamics achieved through two hours of google and some fudging with out hive tech says it would take acres of underground construction to add only minutes if we're getting nuked, and it's got a hard threshold for ineffectiveness once the cycled coolant warms up too much, and for fun even with an assumed non-finite source to cycle it still wouldn't take enough heat out fast enough to offset more than an hour. Not to speak of the infrastructure changes and how it would need to be universal or cored to specific facilities (the largest) to have any blanket effectiveness, making it's cost scale and multiply with every structure that has shielding.

IE, we'd need a better coolant/sink to make the idea viable without taking up too much room/cost/time/reorganization. So we do have at least one method to add a nonsense amount of minutes, if we somehow feel like we want to get an enemy to waste a couple more nukes before we retaliate. Or those resources could be spent on patrol ships or high orbit planetary defenses, which makes more sense.

So if we wanted, we can whole hog a not insignificant percentage of a planets crust into laser coolant chimney flutes to make a single structure no-sell about two weeks worth of on-the-minute nukes with our current technology.
Probably not worth it. Probably.

Dude, even HINTING at the void could start disaster. If we're talking to the Union public every single scrap of information we pass on is going to be reinterpreted in every possible way. In our last interview we told the entire population of the Union that the void shards are the path to some sort of super technology they aren't even ready to handle. Do you really think that will dissuade them from handling them? I guarantee you it will do exactly the opposite.
>>
>>1705958
Dude, I didn't say anything about telling the Union public (which I agree would be incredibly stupid). I think you're misinterpreting my proposal. I think we should tell the Union council that we will not play any games with regards to the Void Shards and that attempting in any way whatsoever to lie to us about them, mislead us, or otherwise try to half-ass a turn over of the artifacts will result in war.

The danger comes from us specifying this is one area we will refuse completely to fuck around, not from us advertising that the Void shards can be used to make a planet cracker. Apologies if that was not clear.

Even so, I think this should be relatively low priority compared to everything else on our to do list and we probably won't even get to it "today"

If we're going to break this down into quest sessions I'd go with

Next session (Path shenanigans)
>Escape from the research facility on Path.
>Inform the Union of OQ spores growing on Path
>“Rescue” Cluster from the Union Lab

In two weeks (Diplomacy and ancient history)
>Begin diplomacy with the Cluster on Djinn
>Talk with our daughter the Scarred Queen

In three weeks (Gemini and politics)
>Finish up game night with Lee and friends
>Take 2 on diplomacy with the Valen.

That way we can finish a day in less than a month real time and keep the quest from getting too bogged down. We could even potentially pack the rest of the day into two games if we keep up a good clip and leave the Valen stuff out. (We do really need to talk to the Valen to convince them we aren't just going to blindly take everything and that it's possible to trade with us to mutual benefit, but that can wait until tomorrow if needed). In that case the runs might be:

Next session (Path Shenanigans)
>Escape from the research facility on Path.
>Inform the Union of OQ spores growing on Path
>“Rescue” Cluster from the Union Lab

In two weeks (Diplomacy and personal relationships)
>Begin diplomacy with the Cluster on Djinn
>Talk with our daughter the Scarred Queen
>Finish up game night with Lee and friends
>>
>>1706963
I would veto actually informing the Union of the OQ spores on Path. Instead, let's selectively send our flies out to plant them around the facility we just broke into. There wouldn't be anyway to trace it back to us, since there is no way for the Union to distinguish between our drones and the OQ's. It would be the perfect pretext for 'quarantining' the Senticom building during our cleanup operations and breaking in at our leisure the proper way, the Hive way. We could take our time uncovering every secret it holds, and maybe even introducing ourselves to Dr. Adam Smith. I bet he'd be interested to learn about Theseus and Heretic at the very least.

Plus, it would give us the perfect justification for launching a raid on Tadega and retrieve their last remaining void shard before they can do something incredibly stupid with it. Again. We can't just go and do it right now because it would show we were in bed with Kent and our agent's identities.
>>
>>1707054
>I would veto actually informing the Union of the OQ spores on Path.
Are you vetoing telling the Union the exact locations where the creep is growing or vetoing telling the Union about the creep at all?
>>
>>1707090
Vetoing telling them at all, just yet at least. Right now the infection is limited to drains and tunnels deep within Path, so it hasn't yet had a chance to do any real damage. Once we alert them to what's going on, they will immediately clamp down on it making moving or seeding the creep much more difficult for us.

Since it's still in a very early stage of infection the damage and chaos it can cause is limited, we would need it to advance further before we could justify containing entire blocks of their mega cities, which we would have to do if we wanted to forcibly breaching the Senticom building.
>>
>>1707054
>I would veto actually informing the Union of the OQ spores on Path.

The longer we hold off on telling them about the spores the deeper the OQ's creep will get its roots into Path. Spore pods can be programmed to build not just infrastructure, but drones and advanced relays as well. And we did have a critical failure on our detection. There is a non-zero chance that if we delay too long the OQ could gather a lot of human tech to reverse engineer, which would amount to a disaster at least as bad as Nowhere.

I'm pretty sure "Adam Smith" is just a "typical" Union Smith. I could be wrong here (and we'll probably figure out more next session), but he's likely programmed to be incapable of betraying the Union like the other Smith we studied was.

As for Tadega and raiding it for the shard - we've already demanded the Union hand over all their shards. If they refuse or try to lie we will probably declare war. The Union understands this. If we can show we're useful and have the potential to be good partners (such as by helping out with Cluster and warning them about the Spores on Path) the Union will be much less likely to do something stupid with the Void shard than if they consider us an impossible enemy who will almost certainly invade them and against whom the Void is the only possible defense.
>>
>>1707130
>Vetoing telling them at all, just yet at least.
I'm pretty sure we can't do that, they specifically mentioned to us that they had taken OQ salvage to Path, if we delay to long and they find the creep themselves we will look very bad.
>>
>>1707179
Agreed. Besides looking very bad, not telling the Union about the creep is literally helping our greatest enemy establish a stronghold on an extremely important planet.
>>
>>1707130
I'm worried that we'll be blamed, whether honestly or as a scapegoat.

If we warn them ourselves or at least ask them to investigate the possibility then we can't be blamed.

If we can clean it up quietly and take over in the creep's place, fine. But right now this is a slow-burning fire that's spreading into areas that affect our interests, and that's not good.

>>1707215
I could possibly see that as a way to force the Union to ask for our help, but more likely they'll just paint all Hive life with the same brush and galvanize public sentiment against us.
>>
>>1707145
>The longer we hold off on telling them about the spores the deeper the OQ's creep will get its roots into Path. Spore pods can be programmed to build not just infrastructure, but drones and advanced relays as well. And we did have a critical failure on our detection. There is a non-zero chance that if we delay too long the OQ could gather a lot of human tech to reverse engineer, which would amount to a disaster at least as bad as Nowhere.

Not quite true. First of all our pods cannot construct drones or specialized infrastructure on their own, and by default cannot psionically connect to the greater hive if it is outside of it's own range. Technically they can be programmed to build an advanced relay, but from what we've seen of the OQ unlike us she HATES including advanced relays in anything. The entire scouting fleet she sent out lacked one, remember? It was governed entirely by specialized thinkers, probably because unlike us, she is very keenly aware of just how dangerous it is placing a relay anywhere it could be intercepted by a hostile queen.

On that note, if the creep on Path did grow an advanced relay, that would be a boon for us. I mean, a potential war winning boon for us. Remember that if we succeed in capturing an advanced relay and connecting it to an advanced psionic jammer, OQ will be essentially permanently crippled. Unable to disconnect from the relay, and unable to communicate with any of her children anywhere, her hive will go from a unified force into a divided and self consuming swarm of bees that will be unable to coordinate their actions or communicate beyond a range of a couple miles. Our war with her would be practically over, and the risk of a couple of human trinkets falling into her hands would be worth that risk.

Of course, all of this overlooks the fact that this only going by what OUR spore pods do, not hers. And even then it's basically just an auto hive creep, not automatic hive constructor with built in connection to the rest of the hive. For hive queens advanced relays hold much more significance than what we've attached to them, and they are far more hesitant than we are to add them to everything.
>>
>>1707179
>>1707215
You forget that we shouldn't even know about the creep ourselves. The only reason we do is because we've established a secret hive on Path on the first place. A fact we would also risk revealing if we told the Union.
>>
>>1707223
That's assuming that her advanced relays don't have a self-destruct mechanism.

Hell, why don't OUR relays have self-destruct mechanisms? Just add giant internal acid sacs around the transmission bit.
>>
>>1707240
>You forget that we shouldn't even know about the creep ourselves.
We simply could claim to have deduced that there would be creep on the planet judging by how intact the remains of the OQ's ships recovered in the Cluster lab are. We could say something like:

"Even the smallest fragments of the structures of the Obsidian Hive contains a potent bioweapon that, if left unchecked, can consume the biosphere of a planet. The debris you recovered - more than we thought should have survived the atmosphere - indicates your planet is likely seeded with that same taint. We urge you to investigate the dark and underground of the planet at once to seek out corruption. Purge the foul creep with fire and dig down to dissolve its roots. We are more than happy to assist if you would like our drones to intervene."

There. Done. Easy.
No need to reveal our own secret Hive (which would probably have to be moved) or our existing infiltration on the planet.
>>
>>1707265
Certainly. We could also deposit trace amounts of the creep all around the Senticom building just before we make that announcement. It's taken it, what, 3 days to get to the point it is. Which is basically the point of inhabiting dank pools and consuming garbage and the odd taidairen. If we deposit traces of it in key points around the Senticom building 1 day or less before we make our announcement, we can point to the outbreak all around this big, mysterious blank spot on the map and demand answers. No risk to anybody and all the justification we need to seize the blackest black books in the Union.
>>
>>1707259
If we could include self destructive glands in every relay it would make the whole weakness they create with advanced relays pointless. Every time an advanced relay shows up there will always be a chance to seize it and jam it, that's the whole point of the jammers.
>>
>>1707311
>If we could include self destructive glands in every relay it would make the whole weakness they create with advanced relays pointless.
Yes, so why aren't we doing it?
>>
>>1707311
Couldn't we just incorporate a thinker into an advanced relay with acid glands (or even something more potent like a small nuke) and give the order "if you ever stop hearing mother's thoughts for >1s self-destruct"? Why wouldn't that work?

I agree it wouldn't remove the risk from advanced relays entirely. I also agree that we probably have too many advanced relays given the danger they pose as their signal leads directly back to us. However, self-destructs would take significant steps towards heavily mitigating the risk of one falling into enemy hands or being jammed long enough to be seized (if we give standing orders to blow up if it can't hear us).
>>
>>1707328
QM fiat. If we could do that it would completely remove the risk of getting jammed, which QD does not want to do because it would remove a key gameplay mechanic. The inherent danger advanced relays pose if captured or jammed is something that has always been there and will likely remain.

Why are our clones always so angry and swear-y? Is that because they all have a little bit of Lyle in them?

>an ornamental shell-glave in the south-shallows reverse-grip style
The fuck is this? Whatever it is, we should put it in some kind of fancy chitin box that's inscribed with some kind of Valen compliment. Maybe send over a gift of fish while we're at it. Motherfuckers love fish.

Engrave it with "Counts in Swamps or whatever."
It's the obvious outcome of trusting Sprekles to accurately communicate the request for a gift to the Hive.

>Why are our clones always so angry and swear-y? Is that because they all have a little bit of Lyle in them?

Lyle was the first human we got to know intimately with the parasites so this might be true.

Lee: "Why are all the Clones so angry all the time?"
Queen: Human Lyle has proved that anger gets results with other humans.
Lee: "I really don't think you want Lyle fucking Rogers as your baseline for human interaction"

A fancy shell that it can be worn easily and it's 'filling' or way of entrance is from the left. It seems valen need to acquire bigger shells or prettier ones to make some status. He basicaly wants a tailored suit.
>>
>>1710197
I think that might be slightly off (although I could be wrong here). The Valen said he wanted:
>an ornamental shell-glave in the south-shallows reverse-grip style

To me that sounds like some kind of grabbing device he can "grip" that in a certain rare style. I'm recalling the following response from QD's ask.fm page:

>The first "tool" known to have been used by ancient Valen is a kind of carved glave device used to extend and narrow the tips of the claws using bits of animal or plant matter to turn the large and deadly claws into more fine manipulators, although the simplicity of some of these artifacts has lead to dispute over their exact use, and the discovery and use of these devices is considered to be similar in significance to Humanity's first use of fire.

So based on that the fact that this Valen is asking for a "glaive" makes me think he's asking for a fine extension device used to narrow the tips of his claws.

Whatever the case of what the Valen is asking for, we need to go all out and greatly exceed his expectations. Several fine glaives, a new artistic shell of the best possible quality, and as many other exotic and valuable trinkets as we can reasonably give without revealing any of our technology. We can then instruct our clone to tell the Valen the items are intended as a "gift" in the hopes of future mutually beneficial ventures. This (should) put the Valen in our debt and make it more likely he will hide details of our transactions from guild oversight.
>>
>>1708954
Could you imagine how the Union brass would react if they overheard that conversation? Morgan would throw himself out the window.
>>
>>1710757

Your on the right track

Remember by having that claw thing he displays to other whales that he has a business contact with the shadows

That is of the major importance of him having it as he raises his social status more which is why he didnt try to demand a bigger cut of the money from spreckles

The social and political gain is much more worth it that the more credits by showing he got a connection to us

And yeah we shouldn't fall over backwards to make it, just do one and make it show it wasn't of any importance for do for us, that shows we are the dominant one in the relationship

So yeah there should be a insult from specker as it reminds him that speck has the real contact with us, not the whale
>>
>>1711415
Perhaps we could include an oblique reference to the impounded ship. It's been a while since we brought out the Queen's cheekiness, it would be fun to play it here.
>>
>>1710757
Oh yeah you are right. Anyway whatever it is we should make it perfectly and show off it wasn't something hard to make as other anon's sugested.

Maybe throw something else like a new shell since the glaive will be a 'gift' for him overlooking the current situation and leave him indepted to us.
>>
>>1715321
Maybe. Whatever we give I agree should be the absolute best possible quality.

This may be a stupid idea, but what if we gave him a hardlight glaive (or a glaive with a hardlight tip)? Something that can extend and retract so easily would likely have great utility, and it would be such a status symbol it's very unlikely the Valen would sell it for someone else to reverse engineer. It'd be a great way of creating a unique gift that will have substantial value and prove Hive origin.

Even if hardlight tech does end up eventually getting reverse engineered, hardlight is among our least valuable technologies, and by trading with it now we can show that there is benefit to be gained in working with the hive.
>>
>>1715537
nope not giving the giant backstabbing slug whales any tech
>>
>>1715560
It isn't all that valuable as far as our tech goes. While the whales are backstabbers, they recognize the value of a good gift better than most. They can't reverse engineer our tech in a reasonable time table, and the whale we gift the glaive too will be unlikely to give it up for someone else to study anyways because it is such a prestigious item.
>>
>>1715560
>>1715607
Also, the whales will be unlikely to backstab us because of the possibility the hive will reciprocate. They are terrified of us and we can backstab a lot harder and more powerfully than they can.
>>
>>1715537
As I understand it, he wants to keep this deal on the downlow for a while.

Taking that into consideration, we should probably refrain from adding any obviously advanced technology that would raise serious questions about where it came from.
>>
>>1715709
That's a fair point. I suppose the hard-light feature could be toggled on and off, but we probably don't want our gift to be obviously Hive on its face.
>>
>>1715607
>It isn't all that valuable as far as our tech goes
>Tech that leads directly to multilayered shields, shield domes, personal shields, and blasters isn't that valuable.

>>
>>1718856
I think anon's have either forgotten how far we have come and how many benefits we got from reverse engineering human tech and Hive tech that we are getting a little bit over our heads.

The tech advantage, as well as the allies we gained, in the for of Theseus and Heritc, gave us a good advantage over cunt aunt.

I wonder if Heretic has any cool tech to help us develop cheaper high tech ships.
>>
Just to quickly answer the question about the glave, according to publicly available information, it is a specific kind of manipulation tool developed in the Valen pre-industrial period. It is entirely obsolete now, which is why the request specified "ornamental", meaning it can be made with an aim for style over function and doesn't need to be fitted or even work, although actual functional versions of a shell glave would essentially be a kind of manual cargo crane bolted onto a valen's shell with a series of primitive pulleys rigged to the joints of the valen's arms allowing fine manipulation of objects smaller than a valen's claws can typically manipulate. The "Reverse-grip" means that the arms are meant to be held back, folded close to the shell with the claws facing upwards, which was a development of a particular region of the pre-industrial valen home world, likely an invention of this valen's historic clan ancestors.

The shell glave itself was mostly an invention of the valen's equivalent of the human Victorian era, a period where technology was rapidly advancing but industrial technology had yet to be created.
steam powered versions quickly made the shell glave obsolete, followed by electronic versions used only four centuries prior, and finally being largely replaces with mechanical puppets, although electric shell glaves with neural controls are still common for valen who frequent areas lacking in valen suitable infrastructure, such as traveling merchants or those living in more rural communes where puppets are less affordable and more difficult to maintain.
>>
>>1719652
What is life like for a Valen living in a 'rural' commune? I've been assuming that given their highly social nature and advanced technology most would prefer living in very densely populated areas.

>>1718856
I think a lot of players here are kind of new to the quest, plenty of them come across as oblivious as to how we got to where we are now.

Though while we're on the subject of scavenger's mastery of shield technology, I noticed in our battle with them some of their tanks were sporting their own personal shields. We really should have captured one of those for reverse engineering, but I guess we can always pick one up on the next world we fight them on.
>>
>>1720930
>We really should have captured one of those for reverse engineering

...You mean the one we did capture, which is due for dissection once it arrives on Leeland along with all the other cybernetic toys installed in its flesh?
>>
>>1721506
Wait, is the Scav matriarch even dead? I thought we captured her alive. I'd have to go check.
>>
>>1721506
>>1721626
Yeah she's alive. Which means she's due for vivisection, not dissection
>>
>>1718856
>>Tech that leads directly to multilayered shields, shield domes, personal shields, and blasters isn't that valuable.

That will take them months to develop at best and more probably years. They don't even have much of the base tech that leads to the development of hard-light. There is very little chance of the humans/Valen reverse engineering it on any time-scale that can be any possible sort of threat to us. The goodwill gained even in the short term would outweigh costs significantly. If it might even lead to us getting a Valen to study in exchange the trade would easily be worth it.

>>1718971
People are also forgetting just how much advanced tech we have and that a little goodwill can go a long way. Consider where our relationship with Theseus would be if we had never done trades with him. Even if we're just giving this shit away (and that is NOT how the Valen see "gifts" at all), the PR boost alone would make the costs worthwhile.
>>
>>1722725
If we're going to acknowledge that it's effectively a tech transfer, let's get paid for it. No reason to sell it cheap.

The hardlight stuff isn't needed to get the goodwill we're going for.

>Consider where our relationship with Theseus would be if we had never done trades with him.

Sure. So if the Valen would like to actually trade tech, then let's talk.
>>
>>1722778
>Sure. So if the Valen would like to actually trade tech, then let's talk.

We can definitely talk with them about this. I have a feeling that attempting to trade in such an obvious exchange is more like how humans would trade than how Valen would trade favors and the like among themselves. But I certainly won't get in the way of our offering to make formal agreements with the Valen to exchange tech, make treaties, or otherwise establish diplomatic relationships that are not entirely predicated on fear.
>>
>>1722725
>That will take them months to develop at best and more probably years.
The correct answer is you don't fucking know. Stop pretending to.
>They don't even have much of the base tech that leads to the development of hard-light.
They, from what we've heard, almost have nanomachines. Just because we can't see all the advancements they doesn't mean they aren't potentially figuring it out as we speak. Hell the tech you are giving could give them enough of an idea of how to advance their own tech to make break through.
>>1722778
>>1722825
>Giving them tech
>Ever
You guys are terrible at business. Your goal should be making them completely dependent on us not giving them tech to challenge us.
For fuck sakes getting a complete monopoly over them would outright make us their indisputable ruler under the way their society works.
You guys clearly think too much of them being like jews and not enough of them being like the chinese.
>>
>>1723495
>The correct answer is you don't fucking know. Stop pretending to.
We DO know that our reverse engineering is orders of magnitude faster than what the humans can accomplish. The Commonwealth described the Scavengers as reverse engineering Commonwealth drop technology in a few weeks as incredibly fast while we described it as very slow. It would take at least months for the Union to reverse engineer any tech we give them especially if the lack the technological base to even attempt to understand the foundation of the technology at the outset and the complexities of its biological nature.

Also, while the Union does almost have nano-machines, our own nano technology is still much better as is evidenced by Palmer's observation of our tech as being incredibly advanced when he observed our healing salve in the Path lab. I agree that nano-machines is one tech we should NOT give the Union unless they offer us something extremely valuable in exchange.

>You guys are terrible at business. Your goal should be making them completely dependent on us not giving them tech to challenge us.
We can do both. Our critical tech (like life extension, teleportation, planet crackers, better FTL, communications, mind-reading, etc.) we don't need to share. This is the stuff that will make them dependent on us. Less critical tech, like photon stuff, we can share and trade to improve diplomacy and relations. We are doing interstellar diplomacy - NOT a business transaction. You don't seem to understand how important appearances are, as well of the possibility of this NOT being a zero sum game for the parties concerned.

>You guys clearly think too much of them being like jews and not enough of them being like the chinese.
You don't seem to understand I'm not thinking of the Valen as either jews or chinese. I'm thinking of the Valen as NOT HUMAN because they have alien sensibilities, culture, and response to gifts and feelings of obligations. You should not think of the Valen as analogous to any existing human culture.
>>
>>1723876
>like photon stuff,
That photon "stuff" is still valuable enough to be considered "critical" and is useful enough that having a monopoly over it is actually more valuable than almost anything they could give us. Talking diplomacy is also stupid of and in itself since these are predators with a tendency for economic war and backstabbing with a great respect for assholery. Selling them the tech actually is a pointless since the only real problem is that they feel like they can't reason with us
>NOT a business transaction.
There is no difference to a Valen in case you haven't notice from EVERYTHING that has been mentioned about the Valen. There is no diplomacy, only business and backstabbing.
>You should not think of the Valen as analogous to any existing human culture.
Most of the races are actually analogous to cultural groups but with the traits of various animals of each being mixed up to make them "alien". Like the Ceph are in fact analogous to Muslim death cults with their octopus-like nature justifying their morality and the Canians are buddhist monks that just so happen to live in the space equivalent of the middle east. You have to keep in mind even though they are aliens they are in the end unable to be truly alien since there is so many of them that QD invented and they are written by a human trying to make them relatable.

What? It's fucking true. Aliens in this setting are about as alien thought process wise as somebody living in a different culture with most alien part of them their biology. Smuggling just allows you to ship hive assets off world, such as agents, weapons, drones, egg layers, ect.
