/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back, members of the Solar Expeditionary Force, to the 91st installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! I'm Wong, your host and today you are Heinrich "Caesar" Merrow, formerly of the UJCIDF, pilot of the King Swordfish Mk. II (now upgraded and quite possibly in need of re-designation), currently in disguise as one Sir Gaius Wesker, a new Knight of Avalon.

Last time, Roarke killed Major Bethany Cabot. Messily. He also broke the boulder and unlocked the true form of Void Fist martial arts.

All melee attacks are called shots so it's not like we can do it any other way.

Nah some weird paladin is gonna try and sneak into our bed tonight and sully us, and we don't have Naomi to protect us.
>>
>>1684234
All melee is precise shots if you go for the arm you're getting that arm, it's ranged attacks that aren't for instance in the Ulfberht vs.Templar fight the Ulfberht shot for the Templar and got a headshot, wasn't even intentional.

But there shouldnt be any paladins on auditorium anymore since the duke's contingent left.

Not exactly. Yes you can go for the limbs, but the eyes, weapons, hands, cockpit/vitals are far more expensive and do not get that. So when I said that, I meant 'don't try for the cockpit hit there'.
>>1684250
I stand by a case of 'dead Naomi, move on and not pull a father and dwell on it forever.'. Sides, who knows what the future holds.
>>
>>1684277
>I stand by a case of 'dead Naomi, move on and not pull a father and dwell on it forever.'. Sides, who knows what the future holds.

That sounds like a case of "Giving up without ever trying" and Caesar isn't a little bitch.
>>
>>1684277
>just give up without trying
You are little woman babby. Did you, how do you say, misplace your manhood?
>>
>>1684277
She's not dead yet so theres no reason for Caesar to give up.
>>
>>1684277
I don't think they intend to kill her considering chances are she'll either be the ladies new body or converted to avalonian maybe even improved on and made a paladin.
>>
>>1684277
Option of last resort. If say we're surrounded with no way out.

Besides, on a meta level, the duke seems to know about ceasar and is trying to get us the good end.
>>
>>1684284
>>1684286
Did I say that? Because I don't think I did. Point is, I am saying 'doing this for someone I care for to protect them'. Naomi being rewritten and not being her is quite possible, especially with what that crazy nun said. In the worst case scenario, we will likely have to give up on her instead of doing a Beck. Mind you I am for us rescuing her and as many as possible, but I am also looking at the odds and future as well.
Does that mean give up on Naomi right now? Hell no. But I am also against us being Keith levels of bitchboy by screaming naomi's name all the time in the worst case scenario.
>>
>>1684305
I fully expect Caesar to kill her if she's too far gone, but only if he fails to save her in the first place.
>>
>>1684305
>Did I say that? Because I don't think I did.

>I stand by a case of 'dead Naomi, move on and not pull a father and dwell on it forever.' Sides, who knows what the future holds.
You gave no context, and said "dead Naomi" instead of "if Naomi dies" or something like it, so you kinda did.
>>
>>1684305
You said it in response to me saying that if Rin tried to sleep with us we would break her heart. So it comes off as if you said either Naomi is already dead so fuck Rin, or don't break her heart because we already might have lost Naomi.
>>
>>1684192

Yes.

>>1684209

Bird names are used for Lunar mecha, mostly RCC and civilian models.
>>
>>1684340
Is the naming scheme for Avalonian mechs various Knights?
>>
>>1684340
How about "Lancelot" while under the Avalonian banner.

Because foreshadowing.
>>
>>1684336
Second one there. Sides, I think it is a sort of thing that will need to be addressed. We are doing one hell of a mission. We may succeed, and we may fail on what we set out to do. At the very least, Tabitha has been good and understanding. Saying our reason is to try and protect and save someone we love is not going to break her heart. Hell, the honesty might help her, cause damned if she needs someone to be friends with that isn't a crazy old lady.

“Holy shit. Holy SHIT!” You howl into the comms.

One of your new squadmates tsks, “Sir Wesker, please, we're supposed to continue maneuvers to get you adjusted to your Cavalier.”

Oh, right, you're supposed to be out here drilling. The Duke wanted all ships to depart immediately, but Turpin presented additional orders gainsaying it, and seemed to enjoy doing so. She wouldn't tell anyone else why, besides the Duke himself, but her reason seemed to convince him. With preparations complete, there wasn't much else to do besides train...until you spotted the Black Ogre squaring off against a monstrous Jovian mech below.

You reflexively fire a measured burst from the big, spiral-shaped, dual-linked torso thrusters and do an agile little backflip that carries you in a full vertical orbit around his Knight. You don't know his name yet, “There, I'm adjusted.” You continue to peer down into the gap in the starship superstructure orbiting Auditorium's hull, “Shield disabled...drones disabled...all four limbs disabled...and there he goes, it's a killshot!”

“Countess, please tell him to focus.” Another squadmate requests.

Countess Tabitha Roosevelt's Engeler swivels its large, neoantiquated head towards the Knights, “Hush, I'm watching this. Those movements are much too responsive for a strider that size, something isn't right...it's almost...no, that's impossible.” Her mech shakes its head.

Yours looks up at hers, mono-horn and twin-tails gazing impassively into each other's blank, metal faces, “What is, Countess?” You ask politely. You can tell she wants to talk about it, even as obtuse as you can be when it comes to girls.

“It's almost as if he's a Paladin himself.” She remarks, then laughs uneasily, “Of course, that isn't possible.”

“He has the Anseis, Countess, perhaps he's using that?” Another squadmate speaks up. She sounds young and uncertain.

The Engeler shakes its head, “Impossible. A mature mandrake bonds with a single rider. Without its pilot, a Paladin is just a hunk of metal.”

I was actually going to suggest that because Lancelot was known for being a skilled lancer which suits Caesar's fighting style.

The treachery angle occurred to me afterwards and was an amusing bonus.
>>
>>1684373
Heh. It the exactly the opposite for me. Treachery first, then fight style.
>>
>>1684364
Caesar wouldn't ever think about dating someone else while Naomi was still alive. Him leaving Rin as a backup option for if he can't save Naomi would be entirely out of character.
>>
>>1684369
I forget, did the Kaiser go Overcharged or Supercharged?

And what was the criteria for activating it again?
>>
>>1684340
>Yes

What is your opinion on brownie bites?
>>
>>1684427
Supercharged. We got a 2 point boost at the end. As for the criteria, seems to be emotion related, but along with something else I think. Hard to really pinpoint it when it's Cabot.
>>
>>1684427

+2, I don't have the ATM itself open but I believe that's Supercharged.

As for the criteria, what do you think they are? It's easy to say it's activated by strong, meaningful emotion, but that's making it sound much simpler than it actually is. You can't just activate the mandrake by being in a really bad mood.

>>1684430

I prefer full-sized homemade brownies. Moist and dark, made with a lot of milk.
>>
>>1684461

>>
>>1684461
Thanks Wong.

Hmm, Roarke was thinking about his brother when it activated, the Duke was thinking about his wife and child, and Roarke's mandrake grew when he made love to Karen near it.

I'm gonna guess it's love.

The other Cavalier performing maneuvers with your group pauses, “Countess, please, it is unseemly for one of your stature to gawp. The results should surprise no one.”

You find yourself nodding, but fortunately catch yourself before saying anything, and the pilot of the other Cavalier smoothly continues what she was saying, “...The leader of these space pirates is a singularly deadly ace. I cannot tell you sternly enough, my lady, do not underestimate Roarke Starwind. The moment you do, you will end up...well, like that unfortunate pilot below us.”

“Thank you, Dame Gray. So, what do you think of your new cohort's performance thus far?” The Countess inquires, indicating you.

The Dame sighs, “He is young. Promising, but nonetheless you place great trust in a beardless boy. I would prefer an older man with some scars, some experience, some stubble...”

“I mean in combat!” The Countess snaps, her mech covering its face with its palms.

“Oh, quite adequate. As far as I can judge, anyway. His Cavalier is quite a strong matchup against mine, so with that handicap I can't be entirely sure.” The lady knight grumbles.

“Losing is losing.” You remark. She's still sore about your performance in the simms against her earlier.

“Quell your wounded pride, Dame Gray. You managed to strike a blow against that man below us, which is more than his opponent and that...very expensive-looking machine...can say.

“I-I am not trying to be a bad sport, you two!” Dame Gray protests, “I'm just stating my tactical analysis of our striders!”

“Shh!” The Countess orders, her mech cocking her head to the side, “The Duke is sending new orders, I suppose it's time we...” Her voice trails off, “Expect reinforcements? What reinforcements? What's going on?”

You spot the gleam of an approaching mech first, “Unidentified strider approaching. Too large to be a Knight, but it's not the Oliver.”

[Continued]
>>
>>1684475
Could be. It certainly is a strong emotion. It may also be due to the machine itself. Think about the Squilla berserking. The link may be emotion base, but it's the machine that needs to put in the extra effort.
>>
>>1684493
Passion then. Also, the fact that the Squilla's mandrake had no prior contact to Simon before he connected to it might have something to do with it going berserk. I imagine it's something like going from a sensory deprivation tank into a rock concert with fireworks.

>>1684488
Turpin's strider?
>>
>>1684461
I dunno, get in sync with the mandrake? It /was/ the mandrake controlling the Kaiser, not Roarke. Or you at least told the fight from its perspective.
>>
>>1684475

No. I'll say this. Going "Roarke is feeling this way right now so Wong gib bonus pls" will not work. It's situational and NEVER works when rules-lawyered, which is why I'm being so vague despite you being on the right track, sort of.

I'll say this much. In both cases, the mandrake had a chance to facilitate a major objective of the rider, one they felt strongly about, by putting forth extra power. However, YOU also know that even most of the Paladins almost never get their mandrake to actually activate. The Duke has done so a few times, Duchess Carnegie and the cousin Countesses never managed to, and neither did Count Ford.

>>1684467

Let it cool a bit first!

>>1684479

Medium rare.
>>
>>1684510

No, Roarke was controlling it.
>>
>>1684488
Dame Gray is mordred right?
>>
>>1684524
Yup
>>
>>1684512
I'm actually not trying to rules lawyer it, I was just trying to figure out guidelines for my own use. I might just end up using G-Gundam style stuff instead.

>>1684524
That's a really odd choice for a mech name too.
>>
>>1684512
Boxers or Briefs?

Pie or Cake?
>>
>>1684533
No, she was based off Fate Stay Night Mordred. Rider of Red in Fate Apocryca. They use the Roland and the Paladins for their big mechs.. which makes me wonder if this is one of the replacements, or one of King's.
>>
>>1684533
>for my own use

...What exactly are you copying? I mean, most of the mech-related stuff in this quest is pretty typical anime.
>>
>>1684488
>The Dame sighs, “He is young. Promising, but nonetheless you place great trust in a beardless boy. I would prefer an older man with some scars, some experience, some stubble...”

Heh.
>>
>>1684553
Emotional trigger and the Evangelion style berserking. I didn't want to just use generic hot-bloodedness but I did want to incorporate Shining Finger Sword style stuff.

>>1684547

>>

>>
>>1684533
>I was just trying to figure out guidelines for my own
The rulebook is pretty clear on the subject: it functions however the GM damn well wants it to function. You can decide to have it do whatever you please.
>>
>>1684620
Yes, but I like the way Wong does it.
>>
It's large, white and gold, with two huge, overarching curved wings or shields over the shoulders that remind you a bit of the Black Ogre. It's also not flying well at all, wobbling and unable to keep a straight heading, listing and rotating in flight like a sick fish trying not to go belly-up.

You hear a shocked gasp from the Countess, and the Engeler darts forward. Dame Gray's Cavalier pursues immediately, the lady knight remonstrating with her, “Wait, my lady! It isn't safe!”

“Teacher!” The Countess cries out, “Both squads, spread out and assist at once.” Her voice is overjoyed.

“My lady, this could be a trap, she was an enemy captive!” Dame Gray protests.

“Then why did the Duke know about it?” You fly in, and move to assist...but as soon as you touch its elbow, something happens.

“You.” You hear a voice over the comms. Female, strangely ageless, lacking the withered crackle of years but with an ancient weariness and smouldering anger, “I would know you anywhere, Dread Knight Merrow. You will not finish me!” Clawed fingers grab your mech by the head, and the curved wings lift to reveal a forest of spears.

The beam tentacle epaulets on your mech's shoulders spring to life, but it's unneeded, “Teacher! No! It's just his strider! It's just his strider! That's one of our knights piloting it!” The Engeler forces its way between you two, while the other Knights and Dame Gray's Cavalier grab ahold of what you assume now is another Paladin by its arms and wings and haul it away.

“Tab...Tabby? Ah, is that really you? I am sorry, I'm still...still not entirely...that pathetic girl's attempts to interrogate me availed her naught, as surely as her torments would have broken a normal woman, but the drugs I was given to induce compliance, while ineffective, have still made me a bit...disjointed.” The white Paladin pats the red one on the head.

“How did you escape?” Even when elated, the Countess is still the Countess, and sounds a bit skeptical.

“My faith in the Lady kept me strong, I knew if I endured and prayed fate would see me and my Berenger free...and lo, here I am. Proof of her divinity has never been so clear.” The sheer reverence in her voice sends an uncomfortable shiver down your spine, a sense of touching something you can't begin to understand, “Even in your strider I can see you making that face, Tabitha. Stop it, you'll get wrinkles. The Lady acted through an agent, a swordsman cursed to be more machine than man, a warrior named Meridian. Apparently he took advantage of some chaos taking place on the battleship to infiltrate the vessel and massacre my jailers. I hope the blood washes out, that man enjoys his work entirely too much. Come now, let us return to your ship.”

Together, you help the Berenger to the Duke's vessel and get it stowed safely in a bay.

>>1685091
Also, give Sam the death scythe. She would make the most use of it for decaps on bigger foes.. alongside those bits perhaps if we don't modify them for Moe.
>>
>>1684830
This actually makes sense.

Fatima is our official Wife.

Sam is both the first girl, and also the one most likely to resort to drugging the rest if they get in her way.

Karen is friends with Sam, and would probably allow Sam to go first in exchange for Sam drugging the rest of them.

Lori had to be in there somewhere, and she DID give us a Mandrake.

Rosita should really be in Lori's spot, but having her go right after Karen would be . . . bad. She'd rather be Fashionably Late I presume.

Clemmy is both Best Girl and willing to wait (for us, and us alone) and also probably massively drugged by Sam to ensure it.

You, as a group, manage to get the Berenger into the mechbay...but not until a team of mechanics in spacesuits have had a chance to scan it for explosives. There's no sense in being stupid, after all.

This gives you a moment, once you've landed and descended your liftwire, to examine the Berenger as it wobbles its way into a bay. What a behemoth! You're still a little bit stunned that Amos, goofy Amos, was the one who sunk this thing. Its cockpit opens, a figure in a UJCIDF pilot suit presumably borrowed from the Iulia Maesa emerges...and she misses her grab for the liftwire, tumbling down towards the floor. Thankfully, you're in zero-gravity.

You kick off the floor, releasing your suit electromagnets, and catch her, nimbly rebounding off the Berenger's knee and landing with her in your arms. A pale but pretty face smiles tiredly at you from behind her visor, “Thank you. You're a good boy, sir knight.”

“Fine catch, Sir Gaius.” Countess Roosevelt claps her hands, and several other knights applaud.

“Gaius? Is he new?” The Paladin asks.

“Yes, one of our recruits from the Solar System, Sir Gaius Wesker. He's the pilot of the black-and-white strider with the lance.”

“Its name is King Swordfish, Tabitha. The strider of one of the Lady's worst and oldest foes. I have heard of it.” The woman struggles to sit up in your arms, then gets her feet under her and hops down onto the desk, “Duchess Maria Carnegie, boy, Tabitha's teacher. It's a fine pleasure to meet you.”

You bow, “Likewise, your grace.”

She smiles, “Good manners, I'm pleased to see. Well! Don't worry! You've done very well for yourself. Pardon me.” She takes your shortsword off your belt, and examines it, “A fine weapon.” She undoes her suit's ties, and strips it off with her helmet. Underneath, she's very naked, and doesn't look like an old woman at all. She flips the blade to hold it in a reverse grip, and digs it into her forearm, blood welling up and drifting away in floating crimson droplets as she digs out a small, flat wafer of circuitry and crushes it in her fist.

“There. One obnoxious tracking device, duly disposed of. Tabitha, this is Duke de Rothschild-Beauchamps' ship, is it not?” She sighs, and makes a face, “Naturally, the Lady is testing my faith by putting me next to his lack thereof. I saw some ships were missing...” She looks around the bay, then stops, her expression blank, “The Anseis, where is it?”

The Countess bows her head, “...My cousin was shot down. Turpin says it is the Lady's will that she remain here with the king of the asteroid belt pirates, she has been stripped of her status as a Paladin.”

The Duchess' eyes go wide. Her mouth opens, then shuts, then she bites her lip and clenches her hands into fists, “Turpin is...perhaps...too eager to test others' faith.” She growls, “If it is the Lady's will, then the Lady has a plan, and is sowing seeds whose flowering we cannot yet imagine. Perhaps someday, something will grow from this one, but...it is a harsh thing to try and understand. The Duke will be on the bridge, yes?”

The Countess nods, “Yes, teacher. With Turpin.”

The Duchess smiles, thin and sharp as a knife, “I'll need some new clothes, and then I shall join them.”

The Countess frowns, “Immediately? But...”

The Duchess cuts her off instantly, “But nothing. I was kept in a room that was intentionally left uncomfortably cold and damp. I was placed in a cell slightly too short to stretch comfortably, with a bed slightly angled to prohibit comfortable sleep. My food lacked sufficient protein, to cloud my judgment and weaken my body and mind. A thousand tiny pains were visited on me when I was not hanging from a wall with electrodes being prodded in uncomfortable places to deliver hurt without permanent damage. All designed to chip at my resolve and make me crack. All would have sufficed, had I not been a Paladin. I will bandage my arm, deliver my report, get an inkling of what our next steps are, and then I am going to eat until I am full to bursting and get a good night's sleep for the first time since my transfer away from the Blue Knight's custody and into the hands of that wretched General.” She hands you back your sword, pulls her pilot suit back over her shoulders, and gestures for one of the technicians, following them as she begins delivering instructions, arranging a room and ordering clothes from the sound of it.

You feel the Countess' hand on your shoulder, “Gaius, I'm sure you've already guessed, but in all likelihood we're leaving without delay. The Jovians won't forgive this, not if they have any pride. If...if you've changed your mind and want to leave us...now would be your very last chance. I would not hold it against you if you decided Avalon is far from home and that your heart is here, but if you came with us...I believe there is a place for you in our number, I really, truly do.”

You start laughing. You can't help it. Leave? Now? When you've come this far already?

“Gaius?” Tabitha tilts her head to one side, a concerned expression on her face, “Hello, Gaius? Are you alright?”

“I'm just a little surprised you would ask. My heart is right here.” You put your hand on your chest, “It's always with me, wherever I go. I won't turn back now, Tabitha.” You remember she told you to call her that in private.

She blinks, then smiles awkwardly, “I...I'm glad to hear that. You are a good man, Gaius. Let's both do our best to make it through this war, so you can protect whatever it was that's so important to you.”

“That's what we're all doing, isn't it?” You smile back at her.

She looks away, “Honestly, when you start being all cool like this...it's easy to forget how young you are.”

“All hands, prepare for emergency microgate projector activation. Warp in ten...nine...eight...” A voice sounds over the PA.

Both of you make your way into a hallway, finding something to grab onto as the familiar gut-tightening feeling of warp washes over your skin. For better or worse, you've left Auditorium behind. You're still far from Avalon, no ship-based gate can carry you that far, but it's one giant step.

“So, we're going to blitz the Jovian Gate?” You ask her.

The Countess just smiles, leading you on towards the bridge, “Not quite.”

You pause in your tracks, “But how, then? The Gate of Mars is damaged, and...” Your brain catches up, and you sputter in horror, “Are we...are we going to the...?”

She smiles, “Yes. The Gate of Terra itself. We are going to walk right through the door of legends. I know what the Duke is thinking, and I know where we are right now, and that Turpin is in the midst of a tantrum.”

Easy to say that now, but when the time comes and we're given a choice between either fighting for Avalon and them letting Naomi keep her memories of him and be with him, or they'll just wipe her mind and kill us for being a spy it'll be a hard choice for him.
>>
>>1685464
He's already considered and committed.

Especially given his Father's history. After all, if he switches to Avalon, he'll have to fight *him*.

Honestly, now that he's gone I almost think Roarke or Stern should contact his dad and give him a heads up.
>>
>>1685464
Yeah, you are really stretching it there. First off, that is exactly the sort of thing we were told about and know it won't work. Second, why the hell would they do that if they know when they could spore/control him then? Sides, if that were the case, he'd likely take them both out instead.
>>
>>1685473
>>1685476
That's where the tragedy of it all comes in, he knows that they're trying to tempt him and that the offer is poison but he can't resist it. Caesar is motivated by his love for Naomi and that has been all of his motivation since he met her. Why is it so hard to believe that he's willing to do whatever to be with her? He betrayed everything he knew and loved to join us just to keep Naomi safe, what's to stop him from doing the same again?
>>
>>1685484
He loves Naomi, not an Avalon zombie masquerading as her.

You help people you love, and if that is the case help will come in the form of a bullet.

Also, he betrayed Soul, Fairchild, and the shitty team-mates who betrayed him first.
>>
>>1685496
Do you think Caeser is mature enough emotionally to do that? Sure he can say he is and that he won't fall for their tricks but when your in the moment and its time to put your money on the line its a whole different ball game. And he betrayed all of Soul by deserting and joining a pirate group, it doesn't matter why he did it he still actively betrayed Jove and gave a Pirate Admiral one of their most beloved artifacts.
>>
>>1685496
Pretty much. And as an aside, Roarke and the like have willingly helped him and acknowledged it. Sides, Caesar has grown, quite a bit. He does have friends even if he is going lone wolf for this and has done well to show the light to Eustace and Tabitha. The road to good end will be hard, and it will require Caesar to make hard choices. But for all your talk about me being defeatist with Naomi.
>>1685510
And you are not really convincing me at all with this. He has stuck with his guns quite well and even with Naomi on his mind, what SOUL B was doing was bullshit too. So if Avalon is doing THE SAME THING, he is not going to abide by it. Man, did you get bitten by Akai or something?
>>
>>1685510
I'm not saying it won't be a difficult time for him.

But he is aware of what has to be done, and that what he would get wouldn't actually be Naomi.

And finally, Soul =/= Jove. He betrayed a corrupt organization to continue fighting for them, as an ally with Roarke's pirates - who ALSO fight for the people if not the Government.

And whom you will note are now Allies with Soul.

You're way over-simplifying things.
>>
>>1685521
Because emotions outway logic sometimes and people aren't always capable of making the best decision in an extremely stressful situation. Sure it is a better decision for him to just kill Naomi in the situation but people don't always work like that. And I still hate Avalon and Caesar joining them would making the war so much harder considering they would make him a Paladin and Roarke would be one of the few people that could fight him, but it feels more in character for the man whose motivation for every single thing he's done since dating her was to protect her and be with her to chose the option where he can still be with her. Plus it also leads to a more interesting story with plenty of room for more plot threads with substance.

>>1685528
It doesn't matter if we allied with Soul down the line Caesar still deserted for a pirate group. That is still seen as treason no matter how much you dress it up.
>>
>>1685553
That's why you don't dress it up, you cover it up."Succeed and you're a hero, fail and you're a traitor".

Gawd. It's politics 101 bro.
>>
>>1685566
You can't cover up desertion and treason unless Caesar takes the chance to betray Roarke and wreck shit for him while bring Naomi back to Soul. Because that's the only way he'd every get out of it considering he'd be a double agent. Gawd. It's espionage 101 bro.
>>
>>1685553
>Because emotions outway logic sometimes and people aren't always capable of making the best decision in an extremely stressful situation.
>What was the entire lead up to the fight with Jesus and Lysa where we analyzed it, called for back up, took the third option, and proceeded to fight and win before Eustace stepped in.
>What is Cool 10 in danger and Int 10.
>What is, analyzing the situations considering all the danger in this entire operation.
As for the rest, it's less about whats in character and more what you as a person want. There are also tons of plot threads and stuff that need to be resolved and looked at as is and you want to add more just because you find it interesting. I find Caesar being a one trick pony incredibly boring since it shows no growth of character.
>>
>>1685572
We we're calm because we had Roarke backing us up, once Naomi started getting brainwashed Caesar lost his shit and attacked Kirito and got his ass handed too him. And good stats don't protect you from emotions anon. And I agree part of it is because it does seem more interesting than just Caesar being a man with no flaws who never makes mistakes and just always picks the best option in the situation even if he has no experience with them. Besides character growth isn't always positive thing, sometimes characters grow and that growth is arguably a negative things and ruins their relationships with other people (Char in CCA).
>>
>>1685417
I expect this to end really badly.
>>
>>1685571
> You can't cover up desertion and treason

You sure as hell can.

"During combat with the foul Avalonian forces, SOUL A was incapacitated. Luckily, while not Allies at the time, the Pirate King of Phaeton was there to provide support and prevent the capture of valuable pilots and Mechs - mostly. Tragically, the young pilot Naomi Watts was kidnapped for reasons unknown but assumed most nefarious given the known proclivities of the Green Men. Despite claiming to be a Nation of Honour, this kidnapping was conducted for no reason tactical or strategic but as yet another example of the barbaric actions such zealots excuse in the name of their religion centered around the Green Man who controls them."

It's not even a stretch.
>>
>>1685591
Wasn't CCA Char a character regression?

And Caesar already decided that if he can't save Naomi from whatever has been done to her, he'll kill her to put her out of her misery.
>>
Well, my computer shat itself harder than ever before, made me register openoffice, and then ate my post. I'm rewriting it now.
>>
Fun fact, Caesar right now is OFFICIALLY on a special undercover assignment thanks to General Fairchild covering up his desertion to the Iron Kestrels.
>>
>>1685606
Was it because she knows that nothing will save her from Rudolph Merrow's wrath when he finds out?
>>
>>1685602
It was also a really bad one that made no sense what so ever.
>>1685591
Except Kirito attacked first? Then used it to calm down Naomi? And that makes it even dumber because it is being ok with that shit which makes no sense character wise both in the 'using Naomi' bit or the 'Jovian who very much likes his freedom' bit. So it is pretty ham fisted there.
>>
>>1685598
"So why did you join him when you could have easily just gone back with Soul since Starwind let them leave mostly unharmed. And why did you trash Keith and Lacus's mech when they were allies."

>>1685602
Honestly you can argue it both ways. After 0079 Char is at a complete loss of purpose and is completely unwilling to follow through with his beliefs or actually take any responsibility whatsoever. That's what Char's character arc in Zeta and CCA are all about with Char somewhat stepping up in Zeta and trying to lead AEUG where as in CCA we see Char has found a reason to live and is actively leading a nation while working to realize what he believes in. People consider it a character regression mostly because they just look at what he's doing and go "Oh he's totally evil he must have regressed" where he actually grows as a person and gains qualities and becomes a better man.
>>
>>1685606
>>1685620

SUCKAH.
>>
>>1685622
He still did it knowing full well it was desertion and treason it doesn't matter that someone else is protecting his ass because in the moment when he made the decision he didn't know anyone would cover for him so he WILLINGLY deserted for Naomi's sake. SUCKAH.
>>
>>1685632
Arguably, like I said, they betrayed him first.

Great way to dance around "It can't be covered up" though.

Cesar was confident that Jove wasn't being represented by their actions there, and that he was doing the right thing.
>>
>>1685622
The fun part of it is; this has been mentioned when Fairchild kicked the shit out of Keith for doing this shit. Hell, if he returns, by being a part of Phaeton, they will likely paint it as an act of camaradie between the two countries as Roarke rewards him a place to live for his hard work.
But yes, at this point Thunderbird is simply being a name fag, repeating, and ignoring points made. Just bow out man.

“What.” You hurry after her, “Tabitha. Tabitha no. You're talking about the Gate of Terra. I don't know what the Duke is thinking, but that's suicide. You want us to go up against the entire Reformed Catholic Church!?” Not to mention, what if the rumored Terran forces can leave their atmosphere to aid the Moonies? The thought makes your blood run cold...

...although some part of you whispers that they were considered invincible in the days before SOUL mecha...

...and another part of you whispers fiercely back that the Terrans wouldn't share technology they couldn't defend against.

“Trust the Duke, Gaius. I know he has a plan.” She smiles at you as you enter the bridge, and at the still somewhat distant sight on the main viewport you find yourself awestruck. Well, someone is going to feel extremely awkward once you tell them the mistake they've made.

“Countess.” You whisper, “I hate to be the bearer of bad news and yes, I know it's your first time in the Solar System, but that...that's not Earth.”

She gives you a frigid sidelong look, “Yes, Sir Gaius. The rings rather gave it away.” She taps her cheek with a fingertip, feigning empty-headed, girlish consideration, “The whole part where it's a gas giant would make it difficult for mankind to evolve there, too. I know what Earth looks like, I've seen pictures of it just like every other civilized human being. Judging from its profile and the number of moons...oh, and the big, flashing, scarlet letters on the navicomp display highlighting its name...I'm going to guess that we're looking at Saturn.”

You refuse to look abashed, crossing your arms and nodding seriously, “Yeah, probably. It sure looks like Saturn.”

She snorts, “By the Lady, Gaius...” She shakes her head, but she's smiling.

Turpin is sharing none of your good humor, glaring at the Duke in livid rage. “We can NOT afford this delay.” She snaps. “I could be spending this time working with the Princess' synch rates, every day we waste in this system is time ill-used. Can we not rely on Five-Man Band? Why must we resort to such risky measures?”

The Duke seems perfectly content, stretching in his chair atop the central command dais of the bridge. The Duchess is leaning against a nearby console, her arms folded, perhaps trying to look like she isn't still unsteady on her feet.

“I don't trust the pirates that far.” The Duke responds simply, “Nor do I believe they could get our entire fleet through the Gate of Jupiter. Nor will I entertain for a second any idea you have of abandoning most of our troops to evacuate 'essential personnel', namely our nobles and commanders, and I'll have you gagged if you dare to speak such filthy words. You may be a messenger for the Lady, and you may be overseeing Bradamante for a brief period of time, but you are not in command here. I am the supreme commander of this expedition and all matters of strategy, barring direct orders from the Lady...and you and I both know, you have no more of those to gainsay me with...I have a strategy, and it will work.”

“Even so, to make such a detour for what, a handful of knights?” Turpin snaps, “Duchess Carnegie, surely you agree with me that this is folly.”

The Duchess gives her a cool look, “I have great respect for a trusted servant of the Lady, but you are a mere mortal, and I know that I owe my rescue to her orders and no decision of yours. Dame Elizabeth Wayland is a superb lieutenant and a true believer, and several of my trusted warriors were captured on Qu'lir along with her. I shall not abandon them to some Jovian prison even if her taste in paramours is...questionable.”

The Duke nods, “Exactly my feelings. Sir Hector Van Damme is my chief retainer and most trusted cataphract. I may not have any idea what he sees in that acolyte of yours, but I know I value him more than a battleship full of regular knights.”

“He's a vulgar, overly boisterous ruffian, but admittedly somewhat useful.” The Duchess semi-agrees.

I know that pulling the plug on my sick father was a mercy to him, but I couldn't actually go through with it if I had the choice even though I know it would be for the best.

>>1685755
When did I say he was in the wrong? He was completely right for doing it.
>>

I wonder if Turpin is actually trying to use Naomi as a power-grab.

After all, the more time she has to work on her as a replacement of the Lady, the more time she has to possibly turn her into HER puppet.

Arguably, Hector is more useful than Dame Wayland; his plans were really Effective.

“Somewhat? Balderdash! I wager you could drop him on nigh any planet and within a fortnight he'd have impressed the locals enough to have assembled a band of worthy braves willing to follow him into any battle, a few dozen at least!” The Duke proclaims.

The Duchess looks uncomfortably away.

The Duke grins, “Is that what he did on Qu'lir?”

“Shut up, boy.” The Duchess grumbles.

The Duke whistles, “You're one of the few old ladies old enough to call me that, so I'll take it. Regardless, we know for a fact that our vassals are here, on a prison colony, and we mean to get them back.”

The Duchess nods.

“How much manpower and resources do you intend to waste, your grace?” Turpin responds with exagerrated patience, like a disappointed saint. You pray to Minerva for Tabitha to slap her again. “Your fleet is already somewhat ragged.”

“I have no intention of just hurling soldiers willy-nilly at this.” The Duke responds, “I don't suppose you've ever built anything with your hands, have you? A shed? Or perhaps a table or bench? You don't just throw your nails at the wood, you pick a good, straight one, line it up carefully...and then apply appropriate force behind it.”

Turpin shakes her head slowly, “I do not endorse in the slightest the idea of one of our remaining Paladins engaging alone over a few followers, and I will not spare the honesty in my report to the Lady.”

A UJCIDF prison colony, huh? Out here away from the belt, they don't usually have to worry about space pirates, so they aren't as well guarded. Appropriate anti-ship defenses, sure, but not much against an intruding mech. There might be a light cruiser or two worth of mecha, low on the totem pole for new units. After all, it's not as if the prisoners have mecha the guards need to defend against. In all likelihood, you would face mostly Bluegills, perhaps some of the older Pumpkinseed Is. The officers might have Morgan IIs or Warmouths. You, meanwhile, have the Swordfish. Plus, it's a chance for glory.

Because protecting Naomi . . . was the right thing to do.

Well, that's a hard situation indeed. But many other people were strong enough to make the right choice.

Nobody said that Cesar wouldn't have a hard time of it, but nobody has claimed that.

And you seem to be unable to believe that Cesar would be able to make the choice that you were unable to make.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Guys, tone it down with the personal insults, alright? Elderly relatives and their health problems are a hell we all have to deal with, me included, we've all been there and it's tough for everyone.

If you want to argue about whether or not Caesar would be able to pull the trigger on Naomi if she was as badly overwritten as Palmyra (the leader of the Qu'liri Liberation Front with the two tails who got killed by Amos), you can do it without being dicks to each other.

“I'll go.” You raise your hand, “If you only need one nail, my lance is sturdy enough for the job.”

Everyone stares at you. It's uncomfortable and makes you nervous, but this is something you can do.

“What? If the Lady Turpin finds sending a Paladin in to rescue loyal subjects so distasteful, then I'll go alone. I'm a recent recruit, I won't be missed. Besides, I'm strong, and I'm tired of only having useless simulations to prove it. Let me prove my worth, for the glory of Countess Roosevelt.” You add the last part on whim and are rewarded by seeing Tabitha smile, “If I fail, you only lose one knight, and a young one at that...but I won't fail, I should be able to handle the prison's defenses with ease.”

“I approve. Send him.” The Duchess agrees immediately, “I have a good feeling about this one, regardless of his origins.”

The Duke and Countess trade a significant glance with each other and nod.

“I can provide support fire at a safe distance for at least part of the approach. No vassal of mine is ever alone. Rest assured, it won't destract from your valor in my eyes.” Countess Roosevelt claps you on the shoulder, “Once you've eliminated the base defenses, we can move in with shuttles and ground troops in power armor to take the base itself. Good luck. Does this plan meet with approval, your grace?” She looks at the Duke.

He smiles, “This is the kind of valor I like to see. For once, we're all in agreement.”

“I can name several clear-cut reasons why this is a bad idea.” Turpin states plainly.

“I was referring to those of us with the authority to weigh in on the matter. Find a corner and sit in it.” The Duke says bluntly, enough for the Duchess to roll her eyes, “Prepare yourself for battle, Sir Gaius Wesker. If you succeed...you will be a hero of Avalon.”

An observation that just recently came to me on some reflecting: After rereading the missive that Duke Eustace sent to roarke, we might have to reconsider whether paladins are actually spored when they have their meeting with the lady.

>You must know, Roarke, that I was there when the Lady fell from the sky. I have always believed that she is kindness and justice incarnate, and fought for her on many battlefields, yet since our orders were given to raid the Solar System we have received numerous charges that carelessly breach the bounds of honor, including the injustices done to Naomi Heim, which I am attempting on my own to rectify in my way. Children in love deserve a happy ending, and perhaps I can in some small way deliver it to them. As perhaps I am giving it to you and Loriette. I digress, however, even in writing I find I do not want to confront the truth that has occurred to me, the vile thought that will not let me rest in peace. Is there anything more patient than an immortal being? Would it not be possible for a woman whose intelligence and cunning outmatch that of any regular human to adopt a saint's facade for decades, only to discard it when the need arises? Perhaps I am wrong. I pray earnestly every night that I simply fail to understand, or that someone has counterfeited the instructions we have been given. Whichever way those pieces fall, however, my course is clear. I am a Paladin and a Duke of Avalon, I must deal out justice to those deserving of it. What has been done to these girls was not simply cruel, it was unfeeling, an emotionless and calculated act for maximum benefit at the cost of the innocent, and I cannot let it lie. This course may damn me, but it is one I have set and cannot turn away from now.

Sporing as we understand it creates an intense feeling of loyalty to the green men or a state of apathy as seen or mars when the avalonians originally spored the populace. If so, such treasonous thoughts from a paladin would very well be unthinkable for one properly spored and converted.
>>
>>1686225
i think The Lady is seriously hurt and can not use her full abilities or has realized that her people were wrong to use such methods and has stopped using them.
>>
>>1686225
Aye. Part of me wonders if that priestess has done something to the green lady herself. Using her like a puppet to further her own agenda. Super human or not, it wouldn't be the first time the speaker of some recluse or sick person is bullshitting for their own agenda.

>>1688159

Honestly? I think it started when she modified Roarke's mech without permission in her first scene. Players are incredibly possessive about their stuff and her role as Roarke's mechanic wasn't as set in stone at the time, also the impression people got that she was an imouto character. She and Fatima both had important character shifts, but there's a key difference that I think explains a lot. Fatima's shift occurred when her perception of ROARKE changed, leading her to treat him differently. Karen's shift occurred when ROARKE's perception of HER changed, leading him to see her as a woman and not just a frizzy-haired tagalong and treat her differently. It being a shift on Roarke's end is likely more jarring, less obvious, and harder to write so ultimately everything is my fault.

I also feel somewhat compelled to defend Loriette being "an idiot" when it came to Roarke. As naive as she was, it would have been flat-out metagaming for her to think the commanding officer of a civilian transport ship orbiting Mars and well away from the Belt proper was a space pirate even if she had an inkling that space pirates in the Belt were a problem. Avalon, the system, doesn't have them and if she'd encountered pirates and brigands on other worlds they would be lucky to have a single starship and not just be planet-bound raiders like the ones in the Martian wilderness.

>It is Galactic Year 327, approximately 28 years after the Solar System League declared victory in the Great Sidereal War. You, my friend, are a SOUL pilot.

>It is a time of turmoil, where a struggling and declining military union of eight true planets and one jumped-up planetoid attempts to keep the tattered remnants of the galactic human community together. Inevitably, such times of limited legal oversight and countless petty conflicts breed scum and villains eager to carve out a slice of glory and wash it down with a stiff drink of plunder. However, it's also a time for true heroes to shine, to bring order to a galaxy still rebuilding after the most devastating war in recent history, Heroes like you, buddy.

>You are Roarke S. Starwind. Recent graduate of the UJCIDF Academy and rookie pilot of the newly formed SOUL team. The S stands for Susan, and your initial reticence to reveal your real name before you could establish enough of a reputation to avoid being permanently labeled "Private Sue" led to your drill sergeant bequeathing you with your somewhat unorthodox nickname of "Private Dude McCool".

>You were born as part of the servant class on the Jovian Colony of Io. Your parents were menials bound by a contract to slave away on an industrial plant for Bucephalus Heavy Industries, the dominant megacorporation of Io. They died when you were nine years old, killed in an accident caused by unsafe working conditions. You were taken in and raised by your rich estranged aunt on Europa, who barely had spoken five words to you in the entirely of your foster care.

>You have an older brother, Cassius, who was also working at the plant at the time of the accident. He both legs, but thankfully his ability to program machines wasn't affected. Because of his refusal to lie to the Jovian courts and repeating the official story of worker incompetence, he was fired and was forced to work in a dingy mech workshop. You haven't spoken in years and last you've heard, he moved shop from Io to California Station.

The last few threads have been rife with it, bizarrely.

>>1688315

This is honestly extremely true.

Red Siren never STOPPED being a spoiled idol. She learned from it, and she's great at what she does, but she's a brat nonetheless.

Samantha is more impulsive than she lets on, overprotective, and willing to slip people knockout drugs for their own good.

Clemmy doesn't have Fairchild coddling her and fostering her bad habits anymore, yes, and she's learned how to share...PURELY because it would make Roarke unhappy if she didn't and because the other waifus might cuntblock her entirely from Roarke if she got greedy. She still goes to violence as a first resort often and makes very little effort to be a pirate, less even than Fatima.

Fatima takes the whole Head Wife thing seriously. She may be nice about it (to varying degrees, she's a nightmare to young female recruits who joined out of starstruck admiration for Roarke's interview on JNN who are learning piloting under her tutelage), but she views most of the Iron Kestrels as Roarke's household guards and servants.

One of Karen's problems is that she and Roarke know each other so well that she can't really hide any personality flaws from him. Any ugly personality traits are right there, and he's known about them for years. On the flipside of that, she isn't quite as complimentary towards him as some of the more poetically affectionate wives because it doesn't fit her personality and because she knows him too well. She's willing to call him on his bullshit and honestly...nerds don't take to that well, I know that personally, and like it or not we're all nerds here. It's also an easy thing to miss that she's seen Roarke at his worst, before he was the Boxer, before he was Admiral Starwind, before he had the Black Ogre, before he was even an officer, and she's loved him the entire time.
>>
>>1688528
and lori?
>>
>>1688491
I don't think Karen is badly written at all, I just don't like her personality.
>>
>>1688329

If I had to name something offhand that she has and they don't, it would be noblesse oblige. Of the three, she is by far the best mentor and commander to her subordinates. Red Siren loves her people but tends to show off for them more than really lead them. Fatima is an excellent leader but doesn't have any sort of soft or sympathetic touch with them. Loriette has both and, because she fought for it, takes her status as a Paladin and Countess 100% seriously. It's the big difference between her and her cousin, too. In terms of strategic thinking and intelligence gathering, Tabitha blows Loriette away...but she isn't really close to any of her followers besides her top few knights and Caesar. Loriette probably knows the life story of everyone who's worked for her for more than a few months.

That's one of the benefits of having our nation formed by dozens of pirate bands. Oh, by the way, the Roarke Strategy totally works.

Near the end of Zone of the Enders, I was struggling to beat Viola in the warehouse, I'd lost to her twice because her small, fast mech was a huge change from the previous big, slow bosses. >>1688497
Looking back on it, this does imply that Roarke would be a lot younger as well if he is fresh out of the Academy. Would mean the war would be a good while away, and that our machines would likely have less fancy tech to start.
>Samantha and Pierre are Academy friends who you spend time with. Aunt Fairchild keeps trying to pair us up with Sammy for some weird reason ever since she brought in that Clemmy girl from her extra solar mission.
>Mappa keeps pining over this 'Ryan' guy and won't stop talking about this 'four sword' style of hers. May or may not be buying those weird japanese picture books.
>We are still going to hate the hell out of Cabot, but more so due to her FURTHER messing up the family we have.
>We would know Lysa and her sisters more personally.
>We would likely be the commanding officer for Keith when he's out. Bright slaps will be given.

The last few threads also involved Thunder trying to do politics.

Just saying, advocating for a female enslaving empire may have soured some people.

Let alone his unrelenting murderboner and willingness to defend his position at all costs. Leads to discussions spiraling out of control.

And I personally shit talk Waifu for fun, I leave it behind when it's time for votes. All the girls bring something to the table.

I'm honestly not convinced Thunder isn't some elaborate troll the past few threads since there's no trip.

I never thought I'd say it, but I guess we do need Brazil to deflect attention away from Thunder, and vice versa. Or they could both become anons and people wouldn't call them out. Live by the Namefag, die by the Namefag. Honestly though I don't think it bothers him.

Also your post >>1688491 I feel obligated to point out that Red WILL BE an official Queen therefore nobility once we get married.

We're being an autocratic kingdom, our closest allies are Muslims so far, and our wives consists of a mining Sheikh's princess, a pirate idol, a Spec-Ops commando, a spy maid(man), a lady neckbeard mechanic, and a genetically engineered noble lady who almost killed us.

If Thunder is really getting on your nerves, just ignore it pal. Not worth getting upset.

9 years on this site and I still don't understand some peoples rabid hatred of namefags
>>
>>1689270
same....most of them want attention maby?(thats what i heard)
not that not being a name fag matters, what if the id's being a thing.
>>
>>1689270
>>1689288
The issue with name fags is pretty simple. It's not just the want of attention. It's the weight of a name in of itself. It gets in the way of the idea and colors how people view the comment. A idea from a popular name fag holds more weight than a anon because you get people who follow them. Likewise, that can lead to issues where certain name fags with a bad rep giving a GOOD idea has that idea thrown to the side because they hate that person and do it out of spite. When everyone is anon, the platform is all about the appeal and merit of the idea.
IDs aren't really the same thing because it has less strength, can be changed each thread, and is less obvious unless you actively look at them. It helps to figure out if someone is trying to vote brigade or keeping track in a conversation, but once the thread ends, the ID changes and it's fresh once more.
>>
>>1689304
That sounds unbelievably petty and more an issue with people other than said namefag
>>
>>1689316
And yet that is a part of society. Names have a ridiculous amount of power no matter where you look. Politics, media, sports, designs and studies, ect. You even get people who get away with murder just because of their names even if it's been years since they contributed something good. This is simply human nature. You trim the fat and keep what you know of people simple in your mind so you can better store it. So if you know Steve always skips on the bill, you don't take Steve out for food if you can only pair for your share.
>>
>>1689316
Welcome to human nature and the power of the internet. Things are different here, especially on a place like 4chan, than reality. Bad traits tend to get elevated and good ones ignored most of the time. Just because people can act out with less consequences. Most levelheaded people can deal with it, but a lot of people see the opportunity to call everyone a faggot and roll with it. Thankfully a good chunk of the people in this particular quest are actually quite nice.

In many ways the net is honest even with it's deceit. Sure you get trolls, but you also get more brutal and honest responses once you venture from safe spaces like Reddit or Tumbler. It also gives you time to recover and step back if you so wish, which is much harder in a real world heated discussion. Not everyone takes that action, but it is still there.

I think /fit/ is a good example. You go to fit with some problem and a bunch of people will probably call you a fucking idiot, which you probably are, but plenty of them will still try to help.

On some other website where you need a name people can see you calling people a fat fuck and start giving you shit for not being politically correct.
>>
>>1689429
More likely than not, they'll give you advice on that other website.
>>
>>1689445

>>
>>1689445
to be fair, most of the people that ask questions on /fit/ never read the sticky first, which usually has the answers to their questions. and that makes them fucking idiots

Basically what I think I am trying to say is that not having a name allows people to freely express their intense inner autism without having to temper it for fear of someone seeing something they said and taking umbrage with it and ruin their life, and that this allows for a certain atmosphere.

The thing about Thunder I want to know is, what makes him so special that he can keep his name while the rest of us who had names for the tournament have the balls to return to being anonymous? Thunder either needs to drop his name or no one can complain about the tourney participants having names, Brazil should be allowed to keep his name yet he joined everyone else in anonymity.

>>

I was referencing the fact Thunder's been a namefag since thread one. The tournament has literally no bearing on his namefag status.
>>
>>1690152
Stop being such a faggot, anon. He did try going anon, but everyone asked him to put it back on purely for superstitious reasons.
>>
>>1690170

I never mandated anyone drop their name ever. I've also seen worse ideas from various Anons than I've seen from Thunder, before.

Also I've explicitly asked where Brazil went and been worried about him.

Also kindly fuck off with making demands of other people in this thread.
>>
>>1690183
Eh, superstition can be a mighty powerful thing and it has shown some results quest wise and rng wise. As much as I jabbed at him, it's more his ideas and philosophy that I am against. I would likely be against them even if he was an anon. Same as I would be against going right for the Greenlady's Avalon when Brazil was for it even if I am chill with him. A bad idea is a bad idea, no matter the person.
>>1690193
Aye, I worry about him too. Still wanting to rematch against him, someday.

The time to launch is at hand, but...there's a problem. A tremendous, overwhelming problem.

You drop to your hands and knees, staring up at the...the ABOMINATION before you, “My...my dazzle cam! MY DAZZLE CAM! IT'S GONE!”

“You've only had this Cavalier for a matter of days, how can you possibly be this attached to that a-trocious design!?” The mechanic in charge of your mech protests. “The Countess' colors are far more suitable.”

“IT HAD TACTICAL USE! TACTICAL USE! IT'S THE ONLY KIND OF CAMOUFLAGE REMOTELY USEFUL IN SPACE!” You drop your head to the floor, “...Forget it, I'm going back to my room. Dame Gray, you can raid the prison.”

“Really?” She perks up.

You look at her sidelong, “No, not really. I'm still going.” You sigh, getting up. Your mech has been painted a brilliant scarlet with a ringed pattern on the tentacle emitters. The horn and fingers have been painted black to match the rings, and the chest also has some awful double-breasted pattern of reminiscent of an ancient military uniform, black and gold. The body armor has been redone, the dorsal thruster turbines covered with wing-shaped emitters that hide the noble spiral shape, and even the head piece has the horn pointing more upwards than forwards, and recast to look more like a blade than a drill.

“You just don't understand aesthetics.” The mechanic sniffs, twiddling his moustaches. You resist the urge to slug him.

“I'm sorry, I'm just a little shocked. I liked the old pattern a lot.” You sigh, trying very hard not to act like Keith. It's just paint and armorshell, you'll be fine.

“Yes, but you are a knight! You do not just represent yourself!” The mechanic chides you. “The Countess specifically requested it be altered...something about not wishing to implicate the pirates who sold it to us as, ah, trading treasured cultural artifacts of the Solar aborigines to us.”

That part does make sense, at least...and honestly, it could be a lot worse, "Right. Well, at least it's decent."

You start getting up, and Dame Gray brings her knuckles down on the top of your head, “Ahem. Gratitude. Knightly virtue. Honestly, you Solar boys...”

“Thank you.” You mumble, “It looks very nice.”

You want your goddamn dazzle cam back.

“My pleasure.” The mechanic sniffs, then turns his back to go work on the rest of the ship's mecha, presumable.

“You still have a lot to learn about being a knight, Sir Wesker. Do not think that fighting ability alone makes you worthy of flying the Countess' banner.” Dame Gray lets you up, shaking the horned head of her suit and crossing her arms, “You have been elevated to a social station few are privileged to enjoy, do act the part. He may be obnoxious and lowborn but he is a talented mechanic and he worked hard when he could have just painted it and removed the horn.” She scolds you. It's easy to forget that she's your senior as a knight.

Still, you've never been a squad leader, so you know how to salute. “Yes ma'am. Understood ma'am.”

She pats your head, “Don't make me rescue you. I'm alright with you going alone to prove yourself, especially since it annoys Turpin and makes our Countess look strong, but...we've already lost Sir Letholdus, and most of our other senior knights. The only thing that prevents this from being a complete disaster is that the Countess' chief rival, her cousin, is gone from the equation now. Be brave out there, but remember to come home when you're done.”

You try to remember everything else you know about knights, “Am I supposed to have a banner or the Countess' hankerchief or something?”

She snorts, and bops the top of your helmet again. You see her adopted son staring at you with his creepy eyes, eating candy from a bag, sitting on a pile of spare circuitry nearby, “Not unless there's something juicy neither of you are telling me, but...representing the county wouldn't be an awful idea. You there!” She grabs a passing mechanic, “I need a red nanofiber armband, as quick as you can make one. Put the black crow of Roosevelt on it and tie it around the Cavalier Wesker Custom's left bicep, and make it quick.”

“An armband?” You question.

She wags her finger, “Extra points if you bring it back intact.”

You watch the armband being attached. So, it's an extra victory condition, is it? You know how these games work. You mount up, and when the signal is given, launch. A huge, detachable booster pack has been attached to the spine of your mech, between the dorsal thrusters. Far too heavy and cumbersome to fight with, but the strategy is obvious, it's the same one the Duke used on 16-Psyche. Keep the ships out of the prison's sensor range, fire a single hero mech into effective combat distance, take advantage of the enemy not knowing your numbers.

“My lady will dispose of the nearest ansibles, but if you are delayed...we expect reinforcements will appear. Many of our new soldiers are children from 16-Psyche, and although shipwise we possess an advantage, I, personally, don't want to waste their lives.” Dame Gray informs you over the comms. “Your target is the Xanadu Prison Complex on the Saturnine moon Titan. It has a dense atmosphere, and you'll be equipped with a reentry coating that should burn off completely on your descent. Once you've defeated the prison's defenders and silenced their ability to call for help, we will begin our landing procedures and rescue our comrades.”

“...And any defeated Jovians?” You wish you hadn't asked as soon as you utter the words.

“Try to spare them. Leaving them alive forces any reinforcements to make rescue maneuvers and delay pursuit, buying us time.” Dame Gray deflates your fears instantly. “We know you're from that region, and the Countess is kind. Be thankful you serve her, not all of the Paladins are as forward-thinking as she is. Our information says the prison is defended by a pair of Pangassius-class Jovian ships and a supplementary transport. Normally, one ship is likely in orbit around the moon, guarding the habitation colony the prisoners are kept at during their sleep cycle, while the other waits below at the work camp complex. You'll be assailing the colony first, then the camp. We estimate a maximum of one hundred enemy striders total.”

“More likely eighty.” You correct her. At her expectant silence you're forced to go on despite wishing you hadn't decided to show how smart you are, “Jovian warships probably don't carry a full complement of battle mecha.” You know for a fact that it's standard UJCIDF procedure not to, “That leaves them room for shuttles and visiting officers from other ships. Common sense, really.” That's right, play it off like you're just being smart.

“Indeed, although with a long-term garrison, who knows?” She huffs, “Expect a hundred, so eighty will be a mercy, and call it the Lady's blessing! That's proper knightly spirit!”

You sigh, “Yes ma'am.” The mechanics, meanwhile, are hosing your precious Swordfish down with gunk, but at least it doesn't seem like it will interfere with your movements much.

At last, it's time to launch. The Duke and Countess wish you well, even Turpin says a few ceremonial words, and you salute with your lance before the electromagnetic catapult flings you into space, your booster kicking in at just the right moment for maximum thrust. As of this moment, you're a knight on a quest, a lone lancer with a crimson steed.

As you soar through space at eye-watering speeds, the vast distances involved make you feel like you're moving at a crawl, and you have time to take in just how beautiful the system you've grown up in is.

The moons of Saturn glitter with reflected light. Your course uses Ymir, Suttung, and Iapetus as cover to mask your approach from Titan as much as possible. Saturn is sparsely populated. There are a few colonies, fringe religious sects like the Enceladus Mormons, and various mining operations out here, but no huge population centers like you find on Jupiter. In a way, it's a pity, with a view like this...but at the same time, you're happy for it. Saturn is beautiful, its rings so smooth and flat, glittering jewels caught in its orbit. This is true wilderness, and as much as you're nervous about the mission ahead despite your grasp of the mecha involved and their relevant capacities compared to your Swordfish, you're happy just to drift.

In that time, you're able to come up with a few adjustments to the original mission plan. You kill the booster pack early, utilizing the existing gravity of the three moons you're bypassing to minimize the loss of speed while still making your course look a bit more random, like an itinerant comet. You deactivate as many of the mech's functions as possible, relying on your suit, so that any long-range sensors just see you as a small, metallic lump rather than an active microfusion generator, and hum classical music to yourself as you come up with at least three battle plans. Until then, you tumble end over end through the stars.

It's not until you pass by Iapetus, its strangely bicolored surface making it resemble a great black-and-white yin-yang, that you spot the dingy colony housing the prison. Titan, with its dense, nitrogen-rich atmosphere, resembles some galactic peach against the brilliant backdrop of stars.

True to form, there's a rather elderly Pangassius light cruiser there, and also true to form, you can spot mecha performing maneuvers around the colony, to stay sharp while guarding the prisoners. You don't expect much from them. These aren't frontline troops, after all, and from what you can see...they're either green, or just plain bad. What worries you more are the defensive satellites.

They aren't the huge warstars that orbit Mars and the more important Jovian colonies, but they're still as big as a large mech's torso and positively bristle with weaponry. Naturally, they're orbit-locked, and move incredibly slowly, but they're still big polyhedrons of metal bristling with beam autocannons. You completely deactivate your mech, your pilot suit is meant to withstand hard vacuum and has its own air supply, space suits have come a long way since the old days. For now, at least, you can rely on it, just letting yourself drift. It works, only two squads are making their way towards you...but from your mental math, they'll reach you with a satellite still in range. Damn it. Seven targets, and you only get one chance at a surprise attack. Fortunately, none of the Pumpkinseed Is or Bluegills on the approach have the kind of advanced sensors your Swordfish does.

You estimate that the satellite is about as strong and well-armored as the Tarrasque's torso servo.

You continue to drift. It's silent in space. Silent and dark. You can hear your own heartbeat, smooth and steady.

As expected, the enemy composition is two Pumpkinseeds and four Bluegills. One Pumpkinseed has a sergeant's markings, and has replaced its built-in regular blade with a pair of beam sabers. The other is the Pumpkinseed Cannon variant, with a corporal's insignia on it. The Bluegills are the updated 'pirate' version, surprisingly, with an enhanced thruster portfolio and maces shaped like metal bats with pyramidal nubs adorning their surface. You guess someone in the prison's chain of command was skimming off the profits for the mining operation to buy upgrades on the sly or bribe a superior for them, but at least they're spending it effectively.

“The hell is it, Rooster? Looks gooier than my ex-wife when she saw the Starwind interview.” The sergeant's mech circles yours. He's got a bit of a burred accent and a thick, gruff voice. A career man, you're guessing.

“C'mon, Sarge. You only heard about that because you're sleeping with her sister. I've told you once, I'll tell you again, you can't be acromonious about something that was entirely your fault. You were both happy about the divorce, all grumbling does is...” The Corporal has an erudite, very youthful voice. He's probably some high-scoring kid fresh from the Academy assigned here for some seasoning or because of rich parents. “It's a mech, sir.”

“Can it, rookie! She's a crazy bitch and I don't have to pretend she isn't on account of once having had the bad sense to marry her. I was young and she faked a pregnancy damned convincing-like until the ring was on her finger and my credits were in a shared account.” Sarge grumbles, giving the Swordfish a kick, “I can see it's a mech, son, wasn't born yesterday. That doesn't answer my damned question now, does it?”

“An intelligent hypothesis would be that it derives from one of three sources...” Rooster replies.

“An 'intelligent hypothesis' would be that my foot is gonna derive your arse if you don't stop speaking like I'm one of your damned professors you over-primping, wet-behind-the-ears little Fauntleroy!” Sarge's mech swivels its head around and somehow manages to convey an expression of glaring through its T-shaped sensor slit, which cannot move or convey expression in the slightest.

“Sir! Was that an actual literary reference? I'm so proud of you! Have you tried Tolstoy yet?” Rooster immediately goes from bored to enthusiastic.

One of the Bluegill pilots giggles, “Oh Rooster...” It's a girl's voice, cute but a bit high-pitched in a way that would probably get annoying, which abruptly becomes a yelp as Sarge throws her Bluegill at Rooster's Pumpkinseed.

“You can flirt with your squad leader later, Private! No, I haven't heard of any Jove-damned Tallstay and I don't want to, sounds depressing. Anyway Rooster! Continue your Jove-damned report! Three sources, chop chop!” Sarge's Pumpkinseed smacks the back of its hand into its palm demandingly, a gesture that lacks some clout without the accompanying sound of flesh on flesh, “I swear, I miss the Jove-damned Qu'liri. The SECOND they say my prosthetic arm is recovered enough for me to be back on full duty, I'm going BACK to that damned jungle, I'm going to hug those filthy cats and tell them I'm sorry for any nasty things I said the first time around.”

“Sarge, Qu'lir isn't the frontline anymore...” Rooster starts.

“Don't care.” Sarge responds.

“...And didn't you say you wouldn't go back even if they made you a Colonel? Something about nightmares of nearly being grabbed and crushed by a giant fungus-monster during the assault on some dam you keep talking about despite saying it's traumatic? Remember that?” Rooster sounds a bit annoyed.

“I was fine, wasn't I? Some pretty little Martian ace saved me. 'Least I think she was pretty. You could LEARN a thing or two from Major Wedge, boy! Might knock some of the fluff outta that over-educated head of yours! Shot down fiddy greenies in the last battle!”

“Sir, I...” Rooster sounds doubtful, “I mean, the propaganda vids say all sorts of things but...”

“FIDDY.” Sarge insists, “GREENIES.”

“Yes sir.” You can hear the sound of Rooster's soul, which was probably once as bright and polished as a mirror, full of optimism and glorious ideals, slowly being crushed. “Anyway, it's either a pirate model...”

“HA! I'll believe that when I believe that Starwind's hair is real!” Sarge crows.

“It is!” The Bluegill pilot who was thrown at Rooster and seems in NO hurry to disentangle herself insists, “I read it in a Sweet Vibe article AND in Rhythm's 'Ask a Siren' column!”

“Bull-fucking-shit you Jove-damned fluff-headed nancy! A man with that much testosterone has a dome like mine!” Sarge insists. “It's a WIG!”

“Sarge.” Rooster protests, “Baldness isn't necessarily...”

“You reach my age rookie, THEN I'll listen to your thoughts on hair.” Sarge snorts.

Rooster gives up on this argument as fast as humanly possible. “Anyway, Sarge, if it's not a pirate custom...which I never would have suggested in the pre-Kestrel era...um, we have two options. Either it's SOUL, in which case why is it on its own out here, or it's Avalonian. Either way, we should immediately report it and-”

“Which one lets me keep it?” Sarge interrupts.

Rooster sputters, “Sir, you can't just...in...in no scenario do you get to claim it and-”

“Hell I can't boy.” Sarge interrupts again, “It'd look real slick with some personal touches.”

“B-but Sarge!” Rooster protests, then sighs, turning his back to disentangle himself from the Bluegill, making a mute appeal to the satellite, which is remotely piloted in all likelihood, “Please, someone overrule him before we all get in trouble.”

“THE HELL ARE YOU SNITCHING BOY?” Sarge roars. “SALVAGE IS SALVAGE!”

In this case, the salvage is savage.

Hm, actually...

Rooster, since he's got a Pumpkinseed Cannon, is a bit further back. You scored the Sarge, you hit one of the Bluegills immediately next to you too, and now you have a choice...

Rooster himself is tough to hit because he has a girl between him and you, and because he's at range. You can do one of the following.

>[Charge Rooster and take out the remaining commander]
>[Hit an unnamed Bluegill, and get another attack on yet another Bluegill.]

The icy blue light comes on behind the Swordfish's mask as the microfusion generator kicks up. You drive the lance through the back of Sarge's Pumpkinseed before anyone has time to even cry out a warning, but you don't clip the cockpit and his cockpit comes tumbling free. You activate the drill, and swing the weapon, still trailing Sarge's mech, in a quarter-circle that slices a Bluegill directly in half, and fire your thrusters on max, surging forward.

Sarge's mech fouls your aim and you only manage to disable the satellite's rudimentary thrusters and leave some scratches in it, but the whirring of the drill tears the Pumpkinseed's cadaver apart and leaves it as wreckage in your wake.

“Jove DAMN, boy! Keep your eyes open next time!” Sarge snarls over the comms, not sounding too terribly worried.

“Igor.” Rooster addresses the remaining Bluegill of Sarge's squad, “Form up with us and attack him from the rear. Cerise, join him. Burke, provide covering fire with the guardsat and I.”

Fire fills the void. The guardian satellite opens up on you with the two beam turrets facing you. One is right in your face, but in a shimmer of blue fire the epaulets on your shoulders release their nanofiber tendrils and begin producing plasma from the emitters. The tentacles on the left side are webbed, forming a shield like the wing of a dragon that blocks the barrage while you dodge the other volley. Rooster fires twice, and you avoid one shell while your beam shield melts the other to slag and dashes it away with its magnetic containment field. Burke drops every rocket in the rocket launcher his Bluegill carries on you, but you deftly avoid it despite your mech being big enough to eat theirs for breakfast. Igor and Cerise charge you from behind with their maces, but you were expecting that and deftly backflip up and over them.

“Jove damn it, Rooster, of course he's gonna dodge if you announce your squad commands on hailing frequencies. Rookie mistake, boy! Rookie mistake!” Crows the floating cockpit of Sarge.

"Oh shit!" Rooster's voice cuts off as he abruptly switches to squad-only.

Too late. Your backflip carried you slightly past Igor and Cerise, but you accelerate again immediately. You jab your drill-lance twice into the satellite, floating between the two Bluegills, then stab once to the left and once to the right, barely looking. You're bracketed by explosions, the cockpits of the Bluegills whizzing past you as the two small mecha and the larger satellite explode. With an eerie, instrumental song from one of the oldest mecha simulator games playing over your comms, you turn to face the remaining two.

Rooster's Pumpkinseed I turns to look at Burke's Bluegill, and the tentacle epaulet on your right shoulder lazily swishes around behind you like a rake of fire, long tendrils of pale blue slicing the Bluegill into pieces. Another ejected cockpit joins the rest.

Rooster, to his credit, is a brave pilot, opening fire without retreating, likely trying to report in to the station...but behind him, you see a line of plasma across the stars, and a single, muted explosion. The Countess has taken out the nearby ansible. Lines of plasma sweep across his mech too, reducing it to rubble as your tentacles claim another victim. Floating in a constellation of shattered mecha, you move the cockpit balls so that they're out of Titan's gravity field and won't crash into and burn up in the atmosphere.

Up ahead, you can see lights around the colony's catapult ports, glittering, the gleam of reflected light on sensor masks. Over a dozen of them, but you're ready. You're ready for anything if it means saving Naomi. The swordfish spreads its tentacles wide, and raises its lance in salute...and then you charge.

So, are we agreed on renaming the King Swordfish to the Lancelot?
>>
>>1693372
No. First off, Paladins are based off of Roland and his number, not Arthurian mythology. So if the Paladins did get it, it would likely be called the Gerin due to it's shield.
Second, the Swordfish is the Swordfish. Sure we could change the King part, maybe add something to it once it returns, but it's pretty much a part of history.
>>
>>1693394
We're not a Paladin dumbass, we're a Chevalier. Note how Dame Grey's mech is named the Mordred.

If we become a Paladin, then we take on one of the names that are available, namely Anseis or Gerin.
>>

By standard Avalonian terminology, you're currently piloting the Cavalier Wesker Custom. Despite Cavaliers being essentially unique Medium Weights, they're all considered "X's Cavalier Custom" because they aren't as unique as the Paladins.

Also, Lancelot was a Gary Stu invented by French authors to insert into English mythology to cuck a famous English king.

Also, I fell asleep at my computer last night but we're PROBABLY continuing today barring emergencies.

the ships?
>>
>>1694201
Looks like. If true, then they took some hits to the sensors, crew, and weapons. Sooo thats -1 to crew rolls, -1 to weapon rolls and a weapon takes damage. If the first set is the same, then thats two more crew hits, another to weapon and sensor.
>>
>>1694201

There is indeed a Pangassius-class light Jovian cruiser docked at the prison colony.

Also interesting, apparently Caesar's weapon tentacles have MORE COMBAT RANGE than any of a Bluegill or Pumpkinseed's ranged options barring the Heavy Cannon some Pumpkinseeds have. 400m versus 350m (450m for the Heavy Cannon).
>>
>>1694218
Attack factors with range can be scary mofoes. If he gets into a good spot, he could deal with them as they come, like a FE General in a choke point.
>>
>>1694251

I honestly straight-up forgot his attack tentacles had an attack factor until this mission and I'm so glad I gave them to him.
>>
Also, as cinematic as the Knuckle Kaiser is, the Swordfish is my favorite as a gundam fan because "doing a new and relatively unique in-setting thing with beam weapons" is a really good gimmick for gundam boss mecha.
>>
>>1694257
I'll say. It's a pretty strong weapon, has good range and you can do some nice damage with it. Against bluegills and Pumpkinseeds, it's a beast, and even with heavier mechs it could decap or disarm them.

Your tentacles stream plasma behind you, backlit by your dorsal thrusters like two gigantic wings of fire spreading across space for hundreds of meters. You lower your lance...and grab a discarded section of the guard satellite's hull armor, holding it in front of you like a gigantic, curved shield.

From hundreds of meters out, you feel the vibrations of beam fire striking your makeshift pavise, undirected and poorly aimed, from two different directions. Peering around its edge, you grunt in acknowledgement.

These are definitely Jovian line troops. The formations they're using are a bit old-fashioned but still common and standard. That's more than a dozen troops, though. In fact, a quick count aided by your sensors shows thirty-six active mecha. Considering the six you already neutralized, that's a total of forty-two, and since the Pangassius' maximum capacity is fifty, that's probably all of the mecha they have. They've spread themselves out, encompassing perhaps a ninety-degree angle in front of you measured from the ones furthest left to the ones furthest right, and divided into two 'screen' formations of eighteen each. Six mecha wide, shoulder to shoulder, and three mecha tall, for each screen. It's a formation designed to maximize the number of mecha who can pour ranged fire into an enemy from a distance. It has numerous weaknesses, burst fire is quite deadly to a screen, along with grenades and missiles, but it's among the better ones taught at the Academy on a standard level for dealing with a single close-combat mech.

...You know all of this because you and SOUL A extensively practiced tactics to beat a screen, among other enemy tricks. In that particular circumstance you were the least valuable member, serving mostly to protect Pierre and Naomi from any enemy close-combat aces acting independently of the formation. Now, you'll have to dismantle it by yourself.

One screen is to your left, between you and the ship, which is slowly starting to move towards you from about three kilometers away, the other is to your right, between you and the colony. The one on your left has a very new-looking Morgan II in the middle, the one to your right has a pair of Warmouths. Both formations are about half a kilometer away at most, a little less at best. Some are within range of your new weapons systems. They're advancing, slowly, and you can see that they're trying to slowly maneuver you back towards a trio of guardian satellites that are slowly approaching from your rear, about two hundred seconds from combat range according to your sensors.

>[Strategy?]
>>
>>1694583
What's his gimmick?
>>
>>1694673

For reference. B = Bluegill (3B represents a vertical column of 3). P = Pumpkinseed (So PMP is a vertical column of Pumpkinseed, Morgan II, Pumpkinseed). M = Morgan II. This one is set up with a pair of one-handed beam pistols, reminiscent of Naomi's setup. W = Warmouth. One of these has a missile pod, large shield and a beam axe (all as statted in the corebook except with space efficiency as needed), the other has a big two-handed sword like the Lightning's kusanagi and nothing else.
>>
>>1694708

Oops, misread my notes. The Morgan II has a beam bayonet made from mating a corebook beam lance with a corebook heavy beam cannon.
>>
>>1694673
Ideally we take them out in such a way that limits their line of sight and makes them waste move. Picking off their tougher units like the Pumpkinseeds, morgans, and warmouths. So for that, I say we maneuver ourselves towards the top part of the 28 column. How much MA do we have to work with each action?
>>
>>1694759
From the moment you release the guardsat hull piece and the battle begins, you have 600m (12 spaces) per turn, or 300 per action. You're in void, so you don't have free walk.
>>
>>1694683
This is no Zaku, boy! No Zaku!
>>
>>1694759
Sure lets do it.
>>
>>1694777
Hm. So we want to break through. We are faster than most of their machines and once we make a mad dash, their Pea shooters start to loose out of range fast. They also can't do atmospheric reentry like we can.If we can get to 2806 or 2807 facing them, their range becomes a lot less of an issue and it gives us a chance to hit them in the flank.
After all, our goal is not to necessarily take out every enemy here, but get to the base, and wreck it up, right?
>>
You can actually reach 1818 in one action or 2711 in two, it's up to you and both put you on the end of a screen.
>>
>>1694860
Good point. They have extreme range if they have the pea shooter guns in the eastern colum if we go with 1818. Would allow us to take out one row of blue gills, and makes line of sight tough for the warmouths.

Xanadu By ELO for our assault on the Xanadu Prison
>>
>>1694471
So, Scirocco is a good boss?
>>
>>1694880

Primarily you have two different Bluegill loadouts here, because they had time to grab weapons on their way out to face you and knew you're not a Harpy or something.

Loadout 1 is an Epoxy Gun and Mace, no shield.
Loadout 2 is a Sword, a Small Shield, and a Rocket Launcher.

The three Pumpkinseeds in the screen to your left (the ones at 2811) are Cannon Pumpkinseeds with their shield option swapped for the Heavy Cannon. The two Pumpkinseeds in the Morgan II's squad are slightly customized, they've replaced their standard forearm swords with beam sabers and their ranged options with Medium Cannons (350m, WA 0, 6K, projectile weapons), both with an extra 0.5 CP of Space Efficiency.

>>1694673

>>
>>1694955
Way too risky and a good way t get encircled. These guys may be Cs, but enough of them kill. This may very well be enough.
>>1694954
so the one with the cannon has a range 8 but the rockets are 7. In their current positions, that means they will have to move or take massive penalties. Did Karen give us the improved Beta armor too? Because that makes the rockets hilarious.
>>
>>1694800

>>
>>1694955

Yes. This is generally why diving into the middle of an enemy formation is a bad idea.

You were hit twice. Once in the left arm (although your armband is intact unless that limb is destroyed), once on the right leg. 5 SP remaining on both, and now it's your turn.

Think we are good. If we position ourselves right and use our move(with some being used so we face the enemy and not take back stabs) we would be out of their range for reasonable attacks. Don't think a -4 will help them and even with 1 MA used for turning, they can't catch us. Likewise, those fleeing will get in the way of the other screen. Once we get into the gravitational pull, then this part is done. They would not be able to chase us.

You dive right into the heart of their formation. It's not optimal, but...fear has its own tactical value. The Warmouth with the zweihander twitches and writhes as you impale it, but its comrade dodges away from your grasping tentacles. Immediately, you're surrounded. The entire screen formation wraps around you, above and below, on all sides, and fills the void with fire. They're being economical with their shots, probably trying to wolfpack you to death and avoid hitting their friends. It's a mistake. Sure, they scratch the paint on your left arm and right leg, but you're barely slowed down.

Five more of them explode and send their ejected cockpits flying away within seconds, as your lance and beam tentacles erase the remaining Warmouth and all four of the Bluegill squadmates the Warmouths had.

You're surprised you aren't taking fire from the other formation, but your sensors quickly reveal why. Thin, azure jets of plasma from kilometers away, raising plumes of metallic shards and gas vented from ruptured tubes along the length of the starship. Someone is opening fire and the second screen is turning into an arrowhead and reorienting, clearly thinking your attack was a diversion for more mecha to attack the ship.

This plan must seem much smarter to people who don't know your actual thought process.

The Countess' smiling face appears on a comm window, “I'm not interfering! Raiding the prison is your responsibility...but this ship is my prey. Have fun!” She winks.

The semi-circle of mecha still surrounding you dart off to join their comrades, likely thinking of safety in numbers. Each one makes an attack at you with a sword or mace, and you're forced to parry a few with the glowing webs of your tentacles, but on the whole you emerge no more damaged than before, watching them speed away. The whole mob of Bluegills has its back to you, including the formation you didn't damage, but if they were facing you you'd be within range of their weapons.

>[Retreat slightly to minimize the number of foes who can engage you. You can, with this method, make two attacks (one with an action, one automatic) versus the fleeing Bluegills.
>[Stay where you are and attack the fleeing Bluegills with your tentacles. You can, with this method, make three attacks.]
>[Jet after them to 2616 to make a charge attack with one action, attack twice more with your lance, and once with your tentacles. This gives you four attacks, but you're right up the tailpipe of that second formation, and if they were moving to disengage and try to get to the ship or colony some will definitely turn and try to return fire]
>>
>>1701895
I think taking large amounts of damage is the reason why people generally don't dive straight into enemy formations.

Rolling fucktons of dice is more of a major inconvenience.

Our mission is to get to the colony. Not to defeat every enemy. We divide them, we spook them, we minimize what they can do to us so we can come down on the prison like a red comet. All this is doing is giving the bluegils more chances to hit us. Use what Tabitha is providing us to get our mission done!

>>
>>1702282
If we don't take care of them know when their freaking out we'll have to deal with them later when their more put together. They may even be able to call for backup though who knows how long it'll take to arrive.
>>
>>1702291
For them to deal with us, they would need to get to the colony. Which requires the ship. Which is in combat with Tabitha. Bluegills and the like cannot enter atmosphere. So if they can't follow us and chances are the ship is already doing that. In those cases, having them all go up there while we rush our way down there will me we can take on less at the base itself. Tabitha is baiting them, buying us room to move forward. If we take their base, then they will be stuck between one enemy which may have taken down their ship, and the other which just took down their base.. with no means to get down.
>>
You have chosen to be A MADMAN.

Also, 2416 instead of 2616 because I realized it's a better position where the remaining Bluegills can shield you a little from the Morgan II and its Pumpkinseed escorts.

Holding back now would be a sign of weakness. You need to keep them terrified and offguard, so...you charge. Right into the back of a retreating squad. You hit the lowest on the Z-axis first, swinging your lance in a huge vertical blow and activating your foot thrusters to slice your way through the three of them. If your lance didn't leave such an untidy wreck in its wake, they'd be cleanly bisected vertically. If you weren't being careful to nudge cockpit balls away from a path that led them towards Titan, this would be a massacre.

The formation turns to face you, apparently realizing that they can't ignore you, it just isn't feasible. One of your tentacles bisects a Bluegill in mid-turn. They're green, so green, you can see their mecha trembling from the spillover fear the pilots are experiencing transferred through the HMIS to their machines. The Morgan II pilot and his escorts move competently, but they just can't get around the mass of Bluegills too busy trying to shoot you. The pilots haven't learned how to be sufficiently economical with their movements yet.

Some of the misses are incredibly narrow, but you don't even have to block this time. You move like a comet, snaking around another column of Bluegills and getting right into the face of the formation's commanding squad. Specifically, right into the Morgan II. You run it through, simple and clean, and although its dangling limbs foul your attacks at the others, you manage to ice another nearby Bluegill with your tentacles as you rip out the Morgan II's cockpit ball and hold it overhead.

The weapons pointing at you are abruptly lowered.

You open up hailing frequencies, “Surrender and eject, and you will be spared. I haven't killed anyone yet, and I'd like to keep up that trend. I have no interest in taking you prisoner, I just need you out of the way for a while, on my honor as a knight.” You add that last part on impulse, “But...if you cross me...” You level your whirring drill-lance at them, “You'll be waiting for a rescue team in nothing but your voidsuits.”

They eject, and you cut comms, heaving a sigh of relief. You contact the Countess, “All mecha forces, presumed neutralized. Bring in the ships and get ready to take the colony. I'll be going below to finish things up on the moon's surface.”

Space aliens come and fuck everyone up really bad. People build mechs to fight them off, largely unsuccessfully.
>>
>>1712747
Humanoid or near humanoid. I'm looking into a bunch of the Macross and Muv Luv stuff right now.

The idea is that all the factions in this setting started from the same generic humanoid frame but took it in a wide variety of directions. Some went Zeon style, some went IBO, some went late Federation, etc.
>>
>>1712752
How does the chick that Cabot is based on play into it?

And why do the mechs have huge shoulders? I mean, the in Universe reason.

Dunno, I only watch a bit of one years ago and it was set in modern day. I think Cobot comes from a spin off set closer to WW2. As for the shoulders apparently they allow for greater range of movement and flexibility and lets them do shit like shoot at things behind them. Not sure how, thats just what the wiki says.

First story is a cliche slice-of-life harem story to set up all the necessary characters.

Second story has MC waking up in a war-torn world where humanity has giant robots and is at war with invading aliens. MC joins the military because holy shit giant robots. Shit goes sideways, everything goes wrong, and the world is doomed.

Third story is MC waking up at the start of the second story, but with all his memories and the physique from his military training. Now armed with the knowledge of how things went wrong the first time, he sets out to make things right.

>>1712754
Schwarzesmarken is a spin-off set in East Germany. Beatrix Brehme is the one Cabot is based on. She's one of the antagonists, but turns out to have better ideals

Well you could use some from Five Star Stories, SRW, Kights of Sidonia, Blue Gender, Patlabor, or Gunbuster.

By stories, do you mean routes?

And how does that make sense? Why is the MC suddenly in a wartorn world?

I guess they're routes? They're a lot more like Fate Stay Night's routes, where you have to complete the first before you get the second and then you get the third.

>Why is the MC suddenly in a wartorn world?
Superscience side-effect causes the MC we follow to go into the alien war world when the version of himself in that world died.

Really, it's for the character development. Take some modern day harem fuckboy and put him through the ringer to turn him into an actual hero.
>>
>>1712933
The visual novel format doesn't seem like the best way to tell that kind of story.
>>
>BETA (an acronym for "Beings of the Extra Terrestrial origin which is Adversary of human race")

I have heard many retarded acronyms, but that one takes the cake.
>>
>>1712980
IIRC when it was marketed prior to release they tricked everyone into thinking it was just another harem, with the draw that it was set in the kimi no nozomu eien world, sharing characters with Akane Maniax (if you like hot blood and yelling watch the OVA of this) etc. It was an intentional bait and switch to fuck with people who read haremshit.
>>
>>1712980
Well making anything with actual animation is hard.
>>
>>1712994
>>1712996

So, the original Muv-Luv was just the harem story and the failed to save the world story and the sequel has the save the world story?

That sounds like terrible storytelling.
>>
>>1712999
I haven't read Muv Luv but would you rather generic harem shit story where everything works out perfectly number 410,757,864,530?
>>
>>1713006
I'd exclude the harem story entirely in favor of an Edge of Tomorrow kinda game where you keep going through until you make the right choices to get the real ending.
>>
>>1713009
>Edge of Tomorrow
>not All You Need Is Kill
Anyway the japs lack of good taste is already widely documented. Being surprised they shove harem shit into things is like finding out birds can fly.
>>

I read All You Need is Kill. Not gonna lie, Edge of Tomorrow was better.
>>
>>1713019
>is like being surprised finding out birds can fly.
Is what I meant to say. Also according to the anon up there it seems like it was mostly to lull people into a false sense of security.
>>1713021
Better name though.
>>
>>1713023
All You Need is Kill isn't even grammatically correct.
>>
>>1712999
Terrible storytelling isn't interchangeable with "this plot twist/genre bait and switch sounds dumb".

Either way, it worked. Sales boomed and the sequels sold great. Japs have shit taste as we all know so that's not really a good metric and it DID spawn that abortion of an anime...

Personally I don't care much for muv-luv aside from the mech design and the kits and its extended universe has Akane Maniax and that is all that I need.
3 episodes of Tomokazu as a Go Nagai motherfucker in a highschool romcom yelling like a fucking loon and fighting super robots with his bare hands, what can even compete?

I like to think a lot of the more outright hateable characters in this quest use portraits of much better characters.
>>
>>1712999
>the sequel has the save the world story?
Not really. That brief description makes it sound far more like a power trip than it actually is. Long and the short of it is the protagonist's efforts help buy a small amount of borrowed time for the world in exchange for tremendous personal losses and ending up a burnt out traumatised shell of a man. The focus of the story is on his character and the development thereof, and the harem and the war are mostly both there to facilitate that.

>>1712980
I think you'd have a hard time doing it in another format. Partly because it relies upon putting the reader in its protagonist's head to achieve its effect, and partly because it needs to take its time in the process so the reader settles in there gets used to it all.
>>
>>1715499
Visual Novels in general feel like a good idea that is badly executed nearly every single time. Steins;Gate is the only real exception and even then, the anime is better.

I would say making it a Corvette Scale tank (for the +2 armor SP) without a turret or gun would make much more thematic sense and raise a lot less Hammerspace questions as opposed to a Mekton Scale Mecharider. Unless the mechs are supposed to be strapped to the side or something.

>>
>>1717161
Something to consider there, but I have always been iffy. Also, tanks that are corvette class would also be much more expensive in general. As for size? Figured it'd be a case of wider Base as the torso with the heavy shell over the top. Like if you squished the Tarrasque like a pancake for the floor Torso. It is certainly a work in progress.
>>1717169
Hmmm, numbers seem a bit odd. Thought the weight inefficiency penalties were bigger and the cost modifier smaller. That final weight would certainly be bigger considering the base is heavier. Not a bad idea though.
>>
>>1717249
Think of it like this - the Blitz uses the same torso servo as this thing, so ignoring that the pods have less spaces than the Blitz's torso has kills, a single Blitz should logically use somewhere around 1/4th the space, right? At best 1/5th or 1/6th, but this design can carry 9. It feels a bit gamey, stretching mechariders to being able to store mechs.

>>
>>1717347
That's kinda what drop ships do.
>>
>>1717964
Yeah, but dropships are actually bigger than the things they're carrying.

RIP AGP cliffhanger.
>>
>>1718274
Not hard to fluff really. Way I saw it was simple. The Torso is the floor of the pod. Rather than being big, it's more wide, with a bit of concave bit to it. Like the bottom of an egg. The 3 pods serve as a tripod to also keep it perched with the boosterpack in the middle. The egg top dome, and what covers and protects the people would be more akin to a very heavy hat with a lot of redundancies. So yes, it is possible to make a machine hold a bunch of other mechs; by making it wider, having them stand on it rather than in it, and then giving it a protective cover. Does that make sense?
>>
>>1714505
THUNDER!

I Just beat Persona 5. Is there a "true" ending or is the whole thing with Yaldabaoth the actual ending? Is there a secret plot behind it like with 4?
>>
>>1718299
I mean... not really, looking at it from Mekton's rules. I pointed out the logic didn't line up because that's not what mechariders were made to do, so the math didn't line up at all. I guess if the fluff actually works is up to Wong though.

I said it feels gamey (and actually is, now that I've thought about the numbers side of it) is because it takes 10 storage spaces at x10 scale to hold a single mech. And buying them for a single mech alone costs 250 CP. So making a mecharider and saying it can store and carry ~10 mechs for even less than what it takes to even be able to store a single mech in the system is a huge stretch to me.

If they were just standing on it and it didn't actually transport them to and from space, and protect them from damage then yeah it would totally work. But taking mechariders and stretching what they can do beyond just carrying a mech from one point to another kinda breaks the rules.
>>
>>1718320
As far as I know that's pretty much it, although there is some things like a secret boss fight and the ability to fuse the true persona.
>>
>>1718346
I mean, its still carrying it from one point to another. Probably want Wong to say for sure what they do. Like I can see stealth not applying to the things riding a mechrider but at the same time does that just mean people see a mech standing still just zipping around?
>>
>>1715707
Maybe, maybe not. But Muv Luv is the sort of story where the most important thing is to have the reader riding along with the protagonist and (at least sometimes) feeling what he feels, which kind of necessitates an interactive/immersive medium of some kind. If Muv Luv were an anime series I suspect it would suffer for the fact that the audience is dispassionately observing the protagonist's life second hand instead of living it.

It seemed fairly well executed to me while I was playing it at least. The harem comedy stuff felt kind of tedious at first, and yet I found myself feeling nostalgic for it many hours further in when everything was busy tumbling down.

Of course, being able to have an experience like that is sort of dependant on the reader being willing to invest themselves in the work of fiction in question. If people actively refuse to play along with it and would instead prefer to sit there maintaining an aloof distance in order to sneer at it then of course they're not going to enjoy it for its own merits.
