With the bow and arrows retrieved, you, Viol, and Sheik look them all over. “Is that really all we could find?” the merchant questions.

“Sadly, it looks like such is true.” you sigh out. “But we do have a plan, at least.”

Sheik looks to you and asks quietly, “Where do you suggest next, Princess?”

“Well, let us head towards my old room. There may be the other piece of this note there.” you comment.

“Still recalling things from there, Princess?” Viol questions.

You nod. “Some. I wish I could recall more. Perhaps I will once we arrive...”

“As you wish.”

Sheik follows behind you with Viol, the cat staying a few steps ahead. The guards seem to have focused on other duties for the moment, so the path is clear... but you do hear them talking some distance away. Might be a change of shift soon. “...Viol, would you happen to know anything about those guards?”

“Muriel and Rhul. Seen them around town a few times. Rhul’s stopped at my shop a couple times. Muriel’s a bit older, been around since before the war, Rhul on the other hand was only recently assigned to this post, but seems they were close friends before this assignment. Rhul’s divorced, Muriel is married to a local smith.” He looks in the direction of the distant chatter. “Should be about time for a shift change. Rotates every few nights, but next should be a pair of men. They’re a bit more... on edge, but I think one of them has poor night vision. As long as we’re quiet, we should be fine.”

“Stealth is the key, then.” you muse quietly. As you navigate the staircase and path leading to your room, more of it feels familiar. Your silent steps almost perfectly trace the ones your younger self took when night came to the castle. You reach the door to your room, and there’s a moment of hesitation. “...It’s been so long.” you breathe out heavily.

“I bet it has.” Sheik comments in a way that mirrors your heavy reflection.

You open the doors... and are slightly surprised. Your room is relatively intact.

You slip on the Mask of Truth, looking around your room as more and more nostalgia flows into your mind with every step. “...It is remarkably well-preserved. Is this area part of the tours, Viol?”

“Not the daily ones, but there’s a longer tour that comes by this area. Think the Hylia Cult helps fund it.” he states.

You... start to understand why the room is so orderly now. “I take it they would not be pleased with this room being disturbed.”

“Unless you plan on letting them know who you are, I highly doubt it. ‘Heresy’ or something.” He states. “...I further recommend not doing that.”

“I have no intention to just yet.” you reply, next looking to the cat. “...Would you happen to know anything about this note?” you ask of it, kneeling down and showing the cat the note.

It first sniffs the parchment... then nuzzles its head against it, moving to your hand and purring softly. The cat starts wandering, like it’s been here before, but isn’t nearly as familiar with the area. You take a moment to sit on your old bed... ah, it’s been so many years, but that soft matress still feels so familiar.

...

You remove the Mask of Truth and take in just how long it has been since you were last here. You find yourself quietly humming the Song of Time to yourself...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWutV6yO7Wo

A deep memory floats to the surface of your mind. You... you recall her. Your mother. “That is enough for tonight, Zelda.”

“But mother, I want to see you fire it again!” you plead, your younger, squeakier voice familiar to your mind, but oh so distant to you now.

“The bow is not a toy. It is something every Queen and their Champion must come to handle with care, respect. It is something you will one day learn how to use yourself.”

“Will I be able to shoot a falling star out of the sky like you did?”

She chuckles warmly. “When you are much older, you just might. But now, you must rest, my little gift of light.”

The Queen tucks you in, taking a moment to sit down on the desk by your bed to... write something. She then blows out the candle by your bed. “Sweet dreams, my Zelda.”

“Goodnight, momma!”

The last image to linger in your head is a brief glimpse of a frown on her face as she heads towards your doorway, your father giving her an apologetic look... gripping his right hand tightly, as if it were in pain. The moment of reflection is broken by Sheik asking you if you are okay.

“I... I recall something.”

You start searching through the desk, Mask of Truth back on. First, you check under the desk, seeing if anything may have dropped there. But even with the Mask of Truth, nothing. The desk’s drawers give you much the same result. But... through the mask, you spot the marks of things behind the desk.

“Viol, Sheik, can you help me move this?”

“Ah, well... I mean I guess?” the merchant says hesitantly. “Bit bigger than what I usually have to move...”

“On three, Princess?” Sheik asks, taking one corner. You nod. “One.”

“T-two...”

“Three!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t8p6qSDfv0

You heave and push the desk away from the wall, the sound loud but hopefilly not too loud. Aha, interesting. There is a small compartment behind it... and the Mask seems to tell you that this compartment holds something unique.

“Did you hear something?” a voice far away asks.

Thinking quickly, you open the compartment, finding a piece of paper inside. You snatch it away and, with all your might, push the desk back against the wall with Sheik’s help, darting out the window and grappling up to the third story with your Hookshot, Sheik gathering up the cat and climbing outside with you, Viol following behind and using his own Hookshot to take the same path as you.

“SHOW YOURSELF!” one of the guards demands as they burst into the room. Ah, but you’re now long gone, all four of you slipped away to the third floor balcony. You breathe out a quiet but earned sigh of relief. That was close.

“Search the area, have someone check the lower and upper floor. Someone was here.” the guard comments.

You smirk just a little. “Zas, I have a favor to ask of you.”

The Phantom Knight appears as you call, Viol’s eyes going wide as he appears. “What do you wish of me, Princess?”

“So... one of the guards thinks this could be a ghost, correct? Perhaps we can give them a ‘ghost’ to chase. Do you think you can distract them, lure them away?”

“Unorthodox, but an acceptable request.” he responds with a nod.

“Thank you, Zas.” you say quietly. You turn to Sheik. “Try to stay away from them, though. Fighting them is not really an option here.”

“As you command, Princess.” Zas starts to sink below the floor, giving Viol a glance before he’s gone completely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyUssoqM8Ac

You hear a loud sound below as Zas seems to stomp down on the floor behind the guards. You hear pained, frightening moans, followed by a call of “Protect... the Princess... Protect... the Princess!”

And then there’s the screaming. Screaming of such a high pitch you’d swear there was a young girl below you. There are loud footsteps from the guards fleeing, and seems Zas is moving along away from you. Viol has a telling smirk across his face. “You are just full of surprises, Princess.”

“Was... that really necessary though?” Sheik questions. “We could have just kept to stealth for this.”

“True, but with Zas out there, the guards will be busy trying to figure him out. Which, if I am not mistaken, will leave the armory with less guards to it. And, hopefully, the Timeshift Stone...”

“Cat, might you know where to find this?” you ask, showing it the picture of the Ring of Ancients. It seems to recognize the item, and starts leading you out of the room.

The guards are certainly busier... but they’re also more disorganized. You can hear the loud, echoing foosteps from the lower levels. Zas’ activities have spooked them into action, but the focus is more around your room. As you follow the cat, the path becomes more and more familiar...

Oh. Ah, but of course. The chambers for the King and Queen... your parents. You notice Sheik glance away briefly as you approach, Viol opening the doors for you both. “Ladies fir-” There’s a soft rustling sound coming from somewhere in the room. “...st.”

The cat arches its back, letting out a soft hiss. It’s too dark to see anything, and you don’t hear anyone make any sounds like they’ve spotted you... but someone else is in there. A shadowy figure is in the dark room... looking for something.

You motion for Viol and Sheik to hide with you, the cat refusing to move. Thankfully, your silent movements keep whatever it is rummaging around in here from noticing you, and it seems to be ignoring the cat. You place the Mask of Truth over your face... and have to force yourself from gasping.

It’s a Wallmaster.

The monster seems to be rummaging around the area, looking for something. Goddesses, if it’s after the Ring of Ancients...

“Viol, did you know about this?” you question quietly.

That is your mother’s brassiere. It tosses it aside and continues going through the drawers of the dresser.

You look around, noticing that, thankfully, that’s not the only thing it’s gone through. Cabinets have been opened everywhere, dressers, drawers, everything has been opened. But it has found nothing. You take aim with your Hookshot. “Cover me.”

Viol’s eyes are filled with a tint of terror. “Y-you’re not going to attack it, are you?”

“No need. Sheik?”

“At your command.” she states.

As the cat hisses at the Wallmaster, you fire the Hookshot to the dresser next to the monster, moving as quickly as you can to grab the item you glimpsed with your mask. It...

...It’s a ring! You pocket it quickly as the Wallmaster’s attention turns to you. Sheik throws a needle at it from behind, dividing its attention between the two of you. Viol gathers up the cat and starts bolting out with you and Sheik, the monster making an attempt to grab you as you leave. A low, breathy, deep howl seems to follow it as it tries again and again to grab you.

The cat leaps from Viol to Sheik’s arms as the three of you leave the room, the Sheikah girl holding on to you by the waist as you hookshot to the other side of the hall, Viol doing the same. It continues its chase, almost disappearing a couple times and trying to drop down on top of you. For a dismembered hand, the monster moves exceptionally quickly.

Its attempt to chase you is thwarted by Zas, appearing from the floor and slashing the monster. The Wallmaster retreats upon feeling the phantom’s blade strike it, seemingly limping away.

“Owe you one, Zas.”

“You should hurry, the guards do not appreciate me putting them on a wild goose chase.”

You smile. “No need to worry about that, I have what we came here...” You pull out the ring... and realize that it is not the ring you were seeking. The cat purrs softly, seemingly glad that it found it. “...for.” A shape in the jewel of the ring glows softly, brighter as it is brought closer to your mask...

...with the Sheikah Eye symbol clearly visible.

“Sheik, may I see your hand for a moment?” you request, holding the ring between your fingers.

She holds it out as you get on one knee, slipping the ring on her own finger. Sheik’s face goes bright red. “P-Princess, what are you-?”

“So it does fit... ah, look!” The ring gives off a soft hum and some... beeping noises? It’s strange. There’s a soft noise coming from it too, almost like... the sound of talking in the distance.

“...These voices sound familiar.” Sheik comments, then looks back at you. “P-Princess, if you wouldn’t mind, could you explain what you’re doing next time?”

“Felt it was self-explanatory. Sheikah girl, Sheikah symbol. Seems to react to you in some way.” you respond with a smile.

“...Why was that ring still in the room?” Viol questions.

“The Sheikah protect the Royal Family, it is our duty. It makes sense that it was still in the room.” Sheik states, bringing the ring closer to her face.

You hand Sheik the Mask of Truth. “Try speaking into it while wearing this.”

She takes the mask. “Okay... this... wait, this is...” She looks up at you in amazement. “This is made from a Gossip Stone.”

“A Gossip Stone ring? ...Gossip Ring?” Viol wonders. “This mystery grows deeper and deeper...”

“Viol, do you recognize this in any way?” you ask.

He shakes his head. “The Hero never had one, though... Sheik, what exactly do you hear?”

“...I recognize these voices. They’re... my clan.” she responds. “Of course, this belonged to the King, to communicate with the Sheikah in times of need.”

“Why is it still here?” Viol asks.

“One could not understand its true purpose unless one could see the truth behind it... it have had a mild glamour to hide it from prying eyes. Princess, do you recognize the King using this ring at all?”

You cross your arms and focus your mind. If this did belong to the King, then you must have seen it on him at some point. “I... agh, maybe...” Think, Zelda, think! What do you recall of this... ah, there’s something. “I recall... my father wearing this alongside other rings. Perhaps this belonged to... ah, Impa! This may be connected to Impa.”

Sheik is quiet for a moment, placing her free hand over the ring. “That would make sense. Perhaps he called her to protect you on that fateful day.”

“Of course. Ah, but... where might be the other side to this communication ring be?”

“Could start shouting into it and see who responds.” Viol recommends in jest.

“When we are some place safer. Now, with this ring found, we should focus on the other ring...”

“Cat, can you try to help us find this? It is a different ring than the one from before.” you request. “And Sheik, if it is not too much trouble, see if you can contact the other Sheikah.”

“As you wish.”

The three of you follow the cat as it looks around the castle, avoiding the increasingly spooked guards as Zas moves through the floors, making them guess on his whereabouts. The cat doesn’t seem quite as sure on where the ring might be, peeking into a few rooms, only to turn away and look into another one.

Eventually it reaches... a curious section of the wall in the castle’s library. It pulls at the carpet, revealing a hatch. Sheik continues to try to communicate with the other Sheikah, to no avail. Wherever this other communication ring is located, it is too distant. She tries raising her voice...

“What was that?” a guard’s voice asks.

You open up the hatch and hurry everyone inside it, pulling the carpet back over the hatch as you close it in one swift motion. Footsteps approach... and go right past the hatch, to your relief. It’s dark in the hatch, Sheik using the ring you retrieved to try and light the way.

It goes down quite a ways, getting colder and darker as you travel. “Interesting. This area seems like it hasn’t been used in quite some time.” Viol comments.

“I don’t recall anything about it from my time in the castle...” you mention. As you reach what seems to be the bottom floor... you hear something.

“Lucky~ lucky~ lucky haul~”

There’s someone down here. A person. He doesn’t know you’re here... and you can spot him moving near a torch in the darkness. Looks like... more of a standard thief.

“Lucky~ lucky~ found them all~”

You call the cat to you, picking it up. “We shall surprise him.”

The cat seems to understand but is hesitant. Sheik is not quite as enthusiastic. “You... you really shouldn’t-”

You make a small leap forward with the cat in your arms. “Hello good sir, meet cat!”

“REEOOWW!” the cat shrieks out as it’s flung towards the man... missing him just barely as he leaps away, not even looking at you.

His head turns slowly, an... eerie, soft smile across his face. “...Hello good ma’am. And hello cat. I’m very sorry, I truly am, but I’m afraid I can’t stay and chat.”

The thief starts a prancing run as Sheik and Viol come up to you, the Sheikah girl looking at you critically, the cat running to her arms. “...Please stop throwing people.”

You kneel down. “I am very sorry for that, Mr. Cat, are you injured?” It defensively scoots back into Sheik’s arms, but otherwise does not seem hurt. “At least you are okay. Now, I apologize for making this brief...” You then bring out your Hookshot. “But we can not let him get away!”

Viol also brings out his Hookshot, Sheik bolting at the man, leaping across the walls as she chases him. Your air hits true, catching on to a post ahead of him and bringing you close. Viol manages to do the same, Sheik bringing out her dagger and readying herself... the man returning in kind, blades clashing as they meet. You get right next to her, ready to engage the man, but Viol stumbles slightly behind you. “I’m okay, I’m okay!”

“Not typical guards, that much is true... Sheikah outfits? Now this is new!” the man cheerfully states.

“You’re outnumbered! Four to one!” you declare. “Put the bag down!”

“Four?” he asks in mild surprise.

“Three of us and a Hero behind you!” You take aim with your Hookshot. The thief counters Shiek’s attempt to slash at him, knocking the dagger out of her hand and making a slash that just barely misses leaving more than a scratch on her cheek. The man makes a brief glance behind him, and you Hookshot the bag he has, pulling it away from him.

He tries to tug it back, but Viol’s own Hookshot hits his hand, knocking his dagger to the floor as well, delivering a hard kick to the man’s face. He stumbles away a bit, rubbing his cheek... but even in the dark room under the library, with little more than torchlight and Sheik’s ring illuminating the area... you see his face is not normal. There’s... a crack, very small, but present, where Viol kicked.

The man tilts his head, a cracking sound coming from his neck. “That was quite the little mistake, and such a careless one to make.”

You help Shiek up and start running with her. “Come on! Let’s get out of here!”

Viol starts sprinting as fast as he can, Sheik more keeping pace with you thanks to the Belt of Winds, making sure the bag is secure. The man follows with inhuman speed, and so you switch things up, swerving to try and keep him off-track. That proves more difficult for him to catch up, but he still gains on you, slowly but surely. Viol tries the same strategy, even tossing a small vile of dust at the man to try and slow him down.

Something tries to swipe at you all, the three of you just narrowly avoiding it as you travel away from him. You reach the steps, managing to call Zas to your aid. The phantom swiftly floats down from the cieling, plunging his blade into the dirt ahead of the thief. He stops, but Zas then pushes his blade up, smacking him with the broad side of it and sending him flying.

You start to slow your movement... but the man gets up. “I must ask you return that bag, or my employer will give me such a nag.”

Zas floats back to you. “I can hold him off, but you need to leave, now.”

“Hold him off as long as you can, we will leave immediately!” you declare, going up the steps. Something tries to swipe at you again, and while you manage to dodge it, another thing grabs Sheik by the ankle, tripping her.

You look back, but she declares, “Go, go! I’ll be fine!” She lets the cat go, you and Viol opening up the hatch and letting you out. The cat follows, and there’s a loud sound from below. You nervously bite your lip as Sheik fails to come out behind you, the cat meowing down into the darkness below.

“Come on, Sheik...” you mumble out.

Finally, she jumps out, her legs stumbling as she flees. “What happened?” Viol asks.

“There’s... there’s something else down there...” she responds with pained breath. Sheik’s hand goes down towards her ankle. “Tssch... not poison... agh, but we can’t stay here...”

You nod, helping her up, the two of you carrying the man’s bag as you start looking for the exit. Commotion follows you, drawn towards your location, but thankfully you’re able to flee without being caught. You all get some distance away before finally stopping to rest, a few rays of sunlight poking out from the horizon, signaling the coming of dawn.

You look down at Sheik’s leg... nasty scratch from claws, but nothing that looks too serious. Zas finally returns to you. “That was a close one.”

“What was?”

“That man had an accomplice. A monster. Death Hand. Seems like it was down there only recently. And whoever he was, he wasn’t normal.”

“...His face was cracked when Viol kicked him. He... may have been wearing a mask.” you mention.

“So the mask guy has his goons doing their own work. Encouraging.” Viol breathes out lowly. “Certainly didn’t feel normal, so this is a good guess.”

“In any case, the encounter was potentially worth it. Let us see...” You open up his bag, and find... well, a number of things inside it. Bombs. Rupees. A broken sword, a knife, and what looks like a strange, small shield. Ah, but luck is in your favor. You pull out something small. A ring... and it looks just like the Ring of Ancients!

...The color of the gem is dulled, diminished. Perhaps someone knows what this means, if it means anything. Still, your mission has been a success. You are one step closer to saving Hyrule.

Very glad to hear!

The cat is certainly willing to stay with Sheik, but it's a bit more wary around you now.

Sheik is starting to think you have a bit of a problem, and would rather you not throw allies at men or monsters. The trip brought up a number of memories for her, too. Not as many of hers were pleasant.

Viol is realizing just how rusty he is, but was slightly amused by your behavior. He really didn't see you becoming someone like this when you grew older, but circumstances shape behavior.
