I want to waifu Blake

Two white blurs whip through the trees of the Emerald Forest. Wherever they pass collections of Grimm, the monsters fall without challenge. You suppose that’s why Beacon let that Beowolf pack build up - the Grimm here were extremely weak compared to those on the borders of a Kingdom, never mind completely outside of them. Still, it’s nice to see Winter’s training has turned her little siblings into a pair of effective weapons. It’s the first time either of you have faced real Grimm, and not Winter’s clones. She did an impressive job at mimicking their behavior and tactics - or lack of tactics.

The two of you are forced to slow as the forest begins to thicken, and it becomes harder to see beyond the rows of foliage. That’ll be the excuse you use later when someone asks you why Weiss must drag you back from walking over a cliff by your shirt collar. “Careful,” she reprimands, “You’re no good to me with broken legs.” You’re about to say something clever when you observe the land over the cliff’s edge and see a man made structure jutting out of the green. You nudge Weiss and point to it, “Think that’s what we’re looking for?”

The climb down isn’t nearly as difficult as Weiss’s ‘broken legs’ comment implied it would be, so you both reach the structure without delay, or interference from the Grimm. The structure is stone, and forms a complete circle. It may have been fully enclosed at one point, but the walls have long crumbled away. Whatever it was in life, the building’s corpse has been scavenged for the test. Brand new, and massive, chess pieces are set on plinths.

“These must be the Relics.” You aren’t sure why Weiss is whispering, but you can feel the pressure that makes her lower her voice. All you have to do is grab one and you’ll pass the first of many tests. You scan the surrounding chessmen as Weiss approach the closest. There seems to be four copies of each piece, two per color. The four Kings sit on the opposite side of the ruin, untouched. Some of the intermittent pieces have been taken, but on the opposite side sit the humble pawns. You take a moment to admire the craftsmanship. Sculpting a perfectly round head for them, by hand and at that size, must have taken some time, and all for the most useless piece who could offer nothing more than potential. Wait a second.

Your arm snaps out to grab Weiss’s wrist just as she’s about to pick up the remaining White Knight. “What?!” she hisses at you, but you ignore it in your rush to explain. “Do you remember Ozpin’s speech when we first got here?” you ask. Weiss nods with a bit of hesitance.

Why not grab the first piece you reach and run?”

Weiss walks away from the knight's plinth, appraising the pawns with a critical eye as she mulls over your question. “I’m not sure… Maybe they just didn’t want the least important pieces?” she offers. You admit, that had crossed your mind too, but you knew that Ruby and Yang would’ve been here by now. If there’s anyone who would be impatient enough to grab the first piece she saw, while also being unconcerned about the piece she took, it would be one of those two.

“Because they figured it out. Why would the Headmaster of one of the four Academies berate an entire class who hadn’t even begun to give him a reason? Ozpin wasn’t talking about our wasted potential, he was talking about wasting the pawns potential! They can become queens, but they shouldn’t. It was an instruction to ignore them! If anyone brings those back, it’ll be proof they don’t have the mind of a Huntsman, just the brawn, and they’ll fail.”

Weiss sucks in a breath and you’re gritting your teeth. You knew getting in wouldn’t be easy, but this proved Ozpin was a special type of devious. You were beginning to wish you had paid more attention to him. “It’s a riddle. Only some of the pieces are safe, and he must have been dropping hints the entire time!” You and Weiss begin to share what you can remember Ozpin saying this past day, and slowly begin to put the puzzle together…

“Hold on, little sister!” Yang grabbed Ruby by her hood and dragged her back to a standing position. “We’re not going back with a pawn, that’s so lame! Pick something else.”

Ruby gave a small huff and placed the pawn back on its weird pedestal. She took only a moment to find a piece that would satisfy Yang. “How about a cute little pony?”, she asked with the White Knight held high. Yang responded with a thumbs-up.

(EVEN EARLIER)

“Are you sure this is the right place?” Blake wasn’t entirely… Sure about her partner. The girl was nice, but left much to be desired with regards to personal space. And social graces. Sure, they would be partners for four years. That did not make them “Besties.”

“I am certain, Blake. These chess pieces are recently placed. This is our objective.” Penny paced around the stone in a nearly perfect circle, a single hand to her chin as she inspected them. Before she decided to grab a piece, Penny sought the input of her new partner. It was important to establish a mutual trust early. “Which one should we take?”

Blake wasn’t certain how to answer. It looked to her like you just… Got one. She picked up the Black Knight off of the closest pedestal and lead her partner back into the forest.

(MUCH EARLIER)

“Mmph hmm! MmmMMhmmmmm mph~!” She wouldn’t STOP! Ciel had bound and gagged her new partner to end the pain and all it had done was made her have to lug this “Nora” through the underbrush. How had the mission gotten this complicated?! All she had to do was find Penny, now she was stuck with this hammer-swinging motormouth for FOUR YEARS! Ciel could’ve at least enjoyed punishing the little demon, but it sounded like she was having the time of her life behind that gag rope!

Ciel’s angry sneer pulled back further, and further still when a memory came without her bidding to the forefront of her mind. ’A lady shouldn’t frown so much, Ciel, you’ll get wrinkles!’ The cadet angrily snatched the White Bishop and dragged her partner back into the woods, Nora chattering to no one all the while.

“Think is the place?” Jaune didn’t get an answer beyond a tilt of her head. He hadn’t expected one. This girl hadn’t even told him her NAME! Jaune knew that he wasn’t exactly a lady killer, but he thought he could have at least gotten a cute girl’s name without too much of a hassle. He needed it to talk to them, for goodness sake!

She picked up a large Black Rook and offered it to Jaune. He sighed as he took it from her, “I guess it’s as good as any other…”

(AND FINALLY)

“White Rook?” Pyrrha hadn’t minded her partner. Ren was quiet and, more importantly, not star struck by her in the slightest. At least, she hoped not. He spoke mostly in calm hums or gentle nods, which either reflected his own relaxed nature or betrayed the nervousness under his otherwise perfectly firm, yet surprisingly malleable exterior. Like an oak tree suddenly becoming much more flexible bamboo. Pyrrha tried not to think about how he wasn’t her first choice. It wasn’t fair to him. Still, it would've been nice to have a partner who could make her laugh.

Ren nodded at her choice, and the two dashed into the treeline as quickly as they had come.

White Knight: Ruby and Yang

Behold the power of siblings! Solid team, and I like both of them a lot, but we may not be the leader. Not sure I care that much, but it's something to keep in mind. Plus, if we *are* the leader, it denies Ruby the chance to come into her own.

Black Knight: Blake and Penny (Bad Luck Penny? Ooh, I like that.)

Whitaker's not going to want to talk to Penny. This is probably the best way of forcing him into it, plus giving him some character development. There's a good chance we'll make the robot cry and then Ciel will come and push our shit in until we say we're sorry. On the other hand, if we can manage to get Whitaker to get past his Uncanny Valley phobia, he can be Penny's friend for real. He's part-way there already, he knows she's sweet, just creepy. Plus, whether we pair with her or not is probably going to affect Whitaker's decisions when he inevitably finds out she's a robot. Do we wanna Shadowrun her and reveal her secret, or do we wanna help her keep the masquerade up? Then there's Blake. Whether we're on the same team as her or not's going to affect our actions when we find out her connection to the White Fang, as well as how much of her story we get...

Your hand is shaking as you pick up the Black Knight, and jumps when Weiss grabs your shoulder. “Are you sure?” She had put forth a convincing case that the right choice must be a White piece, but you nod. It’s on your shoulders if this gets you both kicked out. You tuck the piece into your pocket and charge back towards Beacon, Weiss on your heels.

Hunting for each other specifically has put you behind the others, if the amount of missing pieces was any indication. While you’re less worried about the grade and more the team, Weiss would be upset to score poorly on her first assignment.

The path you cleared on the way to the relic site is, predictably, still empty. You’re free to make a lot of ground without having to slow down and kill Grimm, but the instinctual part of you, the human animal that knows Grimm are nearby, is tensing every second that nothing happens. The tension is replaced with adrenalin when you hear the sounds of gunfire and a monstrous hissing. The two of you stop at the noises. Gunfire means other students, and there’s only one type of Grimm that makes that sound.

“King Taijitu…” That’s not one Winter had ever put you up against. There’s a sudden stab of fear at the thought. You’ve dealt with your sister and angry girls, and Beowolves by the dozen. This is is the first thing your life before Beacon hasn’t prepared you for, but there’s someone already fighting that thing!

“Should we-” You don’t give Weiss a chance to finish and run towards the battle. She knows you well enough not to hesitate at your unanswered question. When you breach the clearing, the Taijitu is thrashing and snapping at two girls you recognize: Blake and Penny. One of the heads makes an unexpected turn and knocks Penny out of the air. She lands hard at your feet.

Penny is slow to stand, so you grab her by both underarms and hoist her to her feet. She’s surprised by the sudden contact, but once she sees who it is, her face cracks into a grin and your stomach twists into knots. In a bad way.

“Whitaker! You can see!” What? Oh, you had forgotten for a second there. The sound of another impact draws your attentions away from each other and towards Blake, holding a three point stance after a near-rough landing. “We can’t just wail away at it,” she shouts, “We need a plan!”
