Ms. Goodwitch began listing exactly what was expected of you all in the next few hours but finished before you could tune her out.

The students begin to disperse. Some of them are already claiming spots to sleep in tonight, but most leave to explore the campus. “What do you want to do?” you ask Weiss. You should probably let her take the lead, she’s had it rough so far. She shrugs at you.

“I’m not sure. I don’t know where anything is. You’d know more than me, Mr. ‘Sneak Out and Spend a Hundred Lien on Bullets.’” Great, she must’ve checked the account after you left to grab your stuff. You were hoping that, with everything else, your impulse buy could scrape by unnoticed. She doesn’t look that mad, though. Maybe Weiss considers it unimportant by this point.

You start to think of how to pass the time, but before you can go beyond “Walk somewhere and look around,” your concentration is broken by a voice calling your name.

“Hey, Whitaker!” The call comes from a small bundle of red dragging a much more reasonably sized bundle of yellow behind her. Ruby’s waving at you, and you hesitantly wave back. Where is this going? She grins at you and turns to her companion with an air of smug satisfaction.

“Ha! See? I told you I know them!” The taller girl rolls her eyes a playfully tussles Ruby’s hair, to a squawk of protest. “And you were worried about meeting new people.” You could hear the grin in her voice, if the one on her face wasn’t enough to clue you in. She stops tormenting the smaller girl and practically struts towards you. The extended hand almost breaks your sternum with how much force she puts into it, but it’s not the most vicious handshake you’ve had these past few days, so you smile and grab it.

“Hi! I’m Yang, and you already know my little sister.” Little sister? That explained the size difference, but how had she gotten into Beacon Academy early? Or was Yang a late entry? You’d almost believe it with how mature she is, but your mother taught you not to stare. “Whitaker,” you strain to say. Why does your hand hurt?

You look down and see Yang has your hand in a vice grip. You look back up and see her friendly smile take a more competitive, challenging tone. You squeeze harder, which she returns. The escalation continues until the two of you have locked the muscles in your arms into position. You try to get more power out of them, but you’re at your maximum. The pain is unbearable, but Yang is flinching, too. It’s become a battle of attrition, a clash of wills unseen in the world of handshaking since time immemorial.

Ruby seems nonplussed about the whole thing and is gently nodding in support. Weiss, conversely, looks shocked, as if Yang had punched you in the stomach then offered to kiss it better. She’s not talking though, so it looks like it’s up to you to answer.

To add onto this, the three forms would be:

1. Sword: a saber of some sort

2. Halberd: the blade of the sword splits and lengthens, with the outer edge of the blade forming the axe head and the point forming the spearhead. The hilt of the sword would extend to form the haft of the halberd.

3. The Rifle: the blade of the sword would fold in half backwards to expose the barrel and the hilt would shift into a stock with the magazine.

She did nearly break your hand, but Yang seems like the type to do it as a joke. “Sure,” you say after a moment of thought, “we’ll tag along.” It could be fun. Weiss catches your eye and signals towards Yang with a questioning look, but you wave her off. Nothing wrong with a little competition. The sisters take off down the nearest hallway, and you and Weiss follow behind. Most of the walls blend together and you soon stop bothering to look at every door individually. Most of the rooms are either empty or full of things that would be found in any school. That makes sense, you suppose, they do also have to take care of your traditional lessons.

The four of you wander towards anything that even vaguely interests one of you, though Yang does pull Ruby away from a hallway marked with several signs that claim it leads to the weapon maintenance and storage section of the grounds. The noises she makes are absolutely pitiful, and she pouts beneath her hood for several minutes after the group abandons the path. Eventually, you find a door leading to an outdoor plaza. A handful of students are mingling and laughing, and Yang is quick to lead you all to an empty spot.

“Man, I thought a school for fighting monsters would be WAY cooler than this,” Yang whines. She kicks a rock off into a nearby bush. “There’s nothing HERE!”

“There’s people,” you point out and gesture to the surrounding students. She gives you a flat look, so you continue with a shrug, “They probably save all the exciting stuff for the actual lessons. They’re not going to leave dust and weapons lying around.” Ruby groans as you finish and shoots an angry look at the ground.

Ruby lights up like a flare and reaches behind her back to pull out a massive red box. The box unfolds and snaps into place. The mechanisms are precise and perfectly in sync. It’s like watching a masterpiece being painted live. Once the last piece falls into place, you can make out Ruby’s weapon: A scythe that’s taller than you are with a blade large enough for Ruby to sleep on.

You can’t contain an appreciative whistle, and Ruby takes that as the signal to launch into a spiel about weapons. “The armory’s where MAGIC happens, Weiss! It’s where you put together these wonderful companions, these extensions of ourselves! Who wouldn’t be excited?”

She begins to press her cheek against the handle of her scythe and begins to gush about that instead. “This is Crescent Rose! It’s a High-Caliber Sniper-Scythe hybrid with- uh…” She cuts herself off as she notices you and Weiss leaning away from her enthusiasm. Ruby blushes to match her namesake and, just as quickly, folds the scythe away and mutters what might have been an apology. You try to save her the embarrassment by unfolding your own weapon into its spear form.

“That’s pretty funny, actually. Mine’s a High Caliber Halberd-Rifle hybrid.” You demonstrate its multiple forms quickly and Ruby quickly forgets about her own misstep.

“Cool! What d’you call it?”

The top blade is much thicker than any of those, but lacks any blades on the side. The side blades are actually the single blade, which splits down the middle and locks to either side, making it more of a battle ax. The realization hits you like a truck: You haven’t eaten ANYTHING today, and you’re starving. You aren’t the only one if the pushing crowd is any indication. What can only be described as a quiet riot begins, as people begin politely pushing past one another and, as a result, pushing back the entire line of people behind each them. You’re being gently jostled in every direction, and it isn’t long before the mill breaks apart your little group.

You finally squeeze into the cafeteria and into line with a bunch of strangers. You don’t see Weiss, Ruby, or Yang anywhere, so you silently follow the line and pack more food than you should onto your plate. The queue spits you out after you’ve gotten your fill, and you’re left staring at a room filled with tables and people. Your sister and the other two aren’t sitting anywhere, which takes away the automatic choice, and suddenly you’re faced with a dilemma that you knew existed, but never personally experienced. Who are you going to sit with for lunch?

He turns to look at you and, seeing your neutral expression, decides that you aren’t being actively hostile and that he might as well be friendly. Wow, what an open book. He gives you a nervous smile.

“Uh, yeah?” You pull a finger away from your tray and point to the empty seat beside him. “This seat taken?” He actually looks at the chair to make sure before answering you, “Oh, yes! I mean- No.” He catches himself and groans, “Just- it’s open. No one’s sitting there.”

“Nervous?” you ask as you slide into the chair. He stutters out an answer while trying not to look as nervous as he felt, “I-I mean… Yeah? A little bit. It’s a lot to take in.” You look over his shoulder to regard Pyrrha. She, unlike her conversation partner, is giving nothing away beyond a passing curiosity at your presence, and you don’t think she let that slip on accident. Your gaze swaps back towards the guy and you extend a hand. Probably best to start with Pyrrha’s friend rather than Pyrrha herself.

“Whitaker Schnee, and I get what you mean. My morning’s been crazy.” He grins and takes your hand in a surprisingly firm grip. The guy’s got muscle for being so nervous. “Jaune Arc,” he says as a simple introduction. Huh. Didn’t even blink at your name. Why is no one surprised by you anymore? First Penny and Ciel, and now Jaune.

A guy that nervous would never simply walk off of his farm and talk to Pyrrha Nikos, not as long as he knew who she was. The only possible explanations were that he wasn’t Mistrali, and he was hiding his true home, or that he wasn’t that nervous and was putting on an act to throw you off the scent. But the scent of what?

“Tell me about your family, then,” you say to keep him talking.

“Oh, well, I have seven-” Why would he act nervous around you and not Pyrrha?

“-she’s got blonde hair and Rouge has-” Does he know you? He’d have to know one of you and not the other for him to have two totally different reactions…

“-but, hey, you didn’t hear that from me! Anyway-” He jumped. He jumped. He must be worried about you, which means whatever his reasons for being here, he knew about you beforehand.

Even if it wouldn’t, you’d like to know that you hadn’t pissed off Blake’s friends. You start to move towards, but she practically dances through the crowd and get to the locker rooms before you can make any progress. You’re not going to follow a girl who’s getting ready to change just for a conversation, but you’ve made up your mind on talking to her. You walk back to your luggage, grab some pajamas, and walk to the locker room the men are changing in.

It takes you no time at all to throw on the loose, comfortable clothing (though you do notice that you’re one of a few guys wearing a shirt to bed) and step back into the hall. Luckily for you, your mysterious new friend was walking out at the same moment. The hall is empty, save for the two of you. Most of the others are already changed or still in the process of making themselves presentable enough to sleep.

You decide to start with your heart on your sleeve. “Hey,” you begin with a wave. She gives you a wave back, but doesn’t say anything. Before you can continue, she turns towards the ballroom and walks off.

“Wait a second!” She does, tilting her head over her shoulder at you. “I saw you eating with Blake,” you explain. “Are you one of her friends?”

She turns to face you, contemplates the question for a moment, and shrugs with a half nod. It must be complicated.

You wince slightly as you ask your next question, “Then I guess you know about the… Thing earlier?” Your answer comes in the form of a long, drawn out nod with wide eyes and a teasing smirk. You sigh at her. It doesn’t exactly surprise you that everyone knows, but you wish they didn’t.

“Well, look, I just wanted you to know that I don’t have any hard feelings over it. I wasn’t looking to start anything, it was just a long list of bad decisions that got worse the more they piled up.” She looks thoughtful, perhaps even sympathetic, before giving you a light shrug. “So, forgiven?” you ask. She gives a single quick nod. You extend a hand and, after giving it an appraising look, she gives it a light shake.

“Whitaker.” You wait a moment for her response, but it doesn’t come. You chew on your lip for a second before asking the obvious question, “What’s your name?”

She smirks again, puts her finger to her lips, and gives you a wink before skipping into the ballroom. She’s actually skipping. Weird, but not the worst you’ve seen, so you let it go.

You wander the rows of sleeping students. There’s a clear divide between boys and girls. Weiss is already fast asleep, only a few mats over from the snoring, sprawled out forms of Ruby and Yang. Blake has he back to a wall and is reading by candlelight, while Ciel… Seems to be explaining how a sleeping bag works to Penny.

The morning passes in a blur. You only know you managed to brush your teeth because you could taste the mint. You and Weiss managed to get dressed and ready to go before anyone else, thanks to Winter’s drilling. Still, you don’t accomplish much. The initiation didn’t start simply because you were ready for it, and everyone you had spent the past few days getting to know was trying to settle their nerves through various rituals. You personally settle by discussing tactics with Weiss.

“This would be so much easier if we knew what the test was going to be!” You shrug at your sister.

“That’s the point. It has to be difficult if we’re going to prove we belong here.” Her gaze hardens and she crosses her arms. You can barely make out “I know we belong here” before a slamming locker causes you both to jump. Surprisingly, Ruby is the offender.

“My dear, sweet sister Yang…” Wow, you hadn’t realized that Ruby could get her voice that low, “Are you implying you don’t want to be on the same team as me!?”

Yang rushed to correct whatever mistake she made, but the conversation brought up and uncomfortable topic that you and Weiss had only briefly touched on once before: Would the Schnees team up?

“Well?” Weiss is looking at you expectantly. She’s got the same question on her mind, and she’s letting you answer. A lot more pressure than you were expecting, but with yesterday’s speech about how level headed she considers you to be, it makes sense she’d see what you thought.
