You are Prince Rhein mac Reagan, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Olstren. When you're not being bossed around by your younger sisters, you support your parents' efforts to rule Olstren until you are ready to claim the throne yourself.

===============

On your seventh birthday, your father offered to let you accompany him as he set out to fight in the Svekkan Revolution. You accepted, eager to see your father fight and command the battlefield. Though there were some battles, the one you remember best didn't occur on an open plain, but inside a ruined castle by the border.

Your father, your uncles Radomir Volkov and Haul auk Gwyrren, your aunt Nesta auk Gwyrren, Princess Agda Almstedt - now allied with Svekka's mercantile aristocracy - and several other Svekkan merchants and nobles sat at a round table and glared at each other. You stood next to your father and studied his impassive face.

"We cannot ignore the plight of the people!" King Haul shouted and pounded his fist on the table. "The so-called nobility of Svekka must be punished for his crime."

"This has nothing to do with Gwyrddarfordir, King Haul," Archduke Radomir said. "However, Rosea has numerous ties of marriage to the Svekka nobility. We will not abandon our allies."

"Husband!" Aunt Nesta glared at the Archduke. "How can you call these murderers your allies!?"

"Nesta, I love and respect your unyielding sense of justice," Archduke Radomir said, "but a Tsar cannot rule without compromise. This just happens to be the best compromise for Rosea."

"Is further bloodshed necessary?" Your father asked. "Princess Agda has relinquished her powers to an elected government in exchange for a nominal title. Thanks for her wisdom, the Almstedt will remain a cultural pillar of Svekka. Could the rest of the nobility not follow her example?"

"That has been my argument for many years," Princess Agda said. "It would allow this conflict to come to an end."

"Do not present yourself as a neutral party here, Prince Meirion," Archduke Radomir said. "Your concubine's support for the Svekkan rebels is well-known."

"Esyllt only sells them medicine and food," your father said, "but I must admit, my current ties to the Svekkan rebels make the negotiations difficult. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's any benefit to supporting the nobles at this point. However, I could be convinced to show some sympathy with Rosea. Vitaliya is only three years younger than Rhein…"

"I won't sell my daughter off in an arranged marriage," your Aunt Nesta said, "but Rhein is my adorable nephew… I guess it's fine if they both agree when they're older."

"Very well," Archduke Radomy said. "We shall take this as a gesture of Prince Meirion's good faith…"

"You'll thank me later, Rhein," your father whispered to you.

The negotiations lasted several hours longer, then several days after that. When your father left the castle, the war was over.

"What did you notice during the negotiations, Rhein?" Your father asked you as you left.

>"Everyone listened to you."
>"The Svekkans spoke the least during the negotiations."

"The Svekkans spoke the least during the negotiations."

"Correct." Your father smiled proudly. "They have the least to offer during these negotiations; they've already leveraged themselves to their limit by getting Archduke Radomir and myself involved. All their remaining assets are tied up. As a result, the negotiations were between Olstren, Rosea and Gwyrddarfordir. The Svekkan factions we supported will have to pay us back in the future."

"Why did mother support the rebels, father?"

"The rebels are led merchants," your father explained. "The nobles are influential, but their influence and assets are limited to Svekka. The merchants have no such limitations. They'll make better partners in the long run."

You nodded at your father's words and followed him to the carriage.

Since then, continental stability has been your father's greatest priority. He travelled to Gwyrddarfordir, Svekka, Rosean and Gaul, often bringing you or one of his other children with him.

And that's how you ended up in this situation.

They both married for love, although Archduke Radomir is slightly more pragmatic about his marriage than Nesta is.

"Ah, to think Prince Meirion is finally getting married." Your childhood friend Morgan laughs and twirls around you as you try to get dressed. "I still remember that day three years ago when he became a beast and pushed me down to ravish my body over and over."

"The way I remember it, Morgan," you say, "you snuck into my room in the middle of the night and took my pants off."

Morgan, the daughter of one of your father's closest advisors, is a bit younger than you, but she was one of your first friends, and certainly remains the most trustworthy.

On certain matters, anyway.

You met Nathalie while you were dealing with a Gaulic arms merchant. Somehow, you walked away with his illegitimate daughter and over 50 blacksmiths in your employ. You suspect Mother Esyllt had something to do with it.

"I'd say you deserve half the responsibility," Liesel says. "While your mothers suggested we broaden our experiences to make this relationship work, you are the one who taught us the joys of carnal pleasure."

Despite her status, Liesel decided to become your consort rather in order to secure Svekka's alliance with Olstren, or because she fell in love with your at first sight and she wanted to experience the thrill of being a Prince's illicit lover, depending on what mood she's in when she tells the story. You suspect both reasons are true.

You finish getting dressed despite Maeve's obstruction, Rois' invitations and Morgan's teasing. Sure, the flesh is willing, but the mind is in charge and you have things to take care of before the wedding. The flesh is just going to have to deal with it and come along.

You pull Maeve's hands away and push her back towards the bed. With a surprised yelp, she trips and falls right on up of Rois.

"I am going to greet my bride," you say. "I recommend you all get ready for the ceremony."

"Are you sure you want us there?" Nathalie asks. "Wouldn't your wife be jealous?"

"I'm more concerned about men being jealous of the Prince," Rois says. "Imagine if they lost their minds to rage and tried to kill him. We would have to kill them all!"

"That does sound exciting," Maeve says.

"This is why mother didn't want any of you involved in the wedding preparations," you say. "Morgan, let's go."

"Yes, your majesty!"

Morgan happily follows you to the palace entrance. Your bride hasn't arrived yet, but it's just a matter of time. You let the servants know that you'll greet her personally; there's no need to disturb your parents over this.

The gates swing open and a horse-drawn carriage rolls in.

"Cousin!" Before the carriage has even stopped, the door swings open and your cousin Vitaliya jumps out. "I'm so happy you came to greet me personally! I've been waiting for this day for so long!"

"Five years, I think?" Vitaliya says. "Your letters made the wait more tolerable, cousin."

"The Crown Prince has been thinking of you every day, your majesty," Morgan says as she bows. "Especially during the last few weeks."

"It was a little nerve-wracking at first," you admit, "but this is something I've lived with for years. It was silly to feel nervous about just because the fated day was getting closer."

"Oh? I still find the prospect of marriage a little intimidating," Vitaliya says, "although that might be because I have to leave my own."

"It is a little unfair that I can stay in a familiar environment," you admit. "I promise I'll do everything I can to make you feel more comfortable."

"Thank you, Rhein." Vitaliya smiles brightly and gives you a hug, pressing her ample chest against you. "So, what should we do next?"

You might as well show Vitaliya around the palace grounds. That'll give you some time to think of a way to explain all your consorts and concubines.

Vitaliya won't mind, right? She knows about your father, so it shouldn't surprise her that you followed in his footsteps. Sure, you might have been a little too enthusiastic about it, but the basic principle is the same.

"We should greet my siblings first," you say. "Morgan, do you know where everyone is?"

"Iolyn and Aneirin are still with their grandfather in Gwyrddarfordir," Morgan says, "but Aislin, Evan, Gwynfor and Hywel are should be training, Anwen, Rhian, Alis, Eurwen and Sian are either gossiping or planning their inevitable monopoly of all the continental markets, and Meical is probably with my father."

"Let's go see my sisters first." You take Vitaliya's hand and lead her into the palace. All around you, servants are preparing tables and fire pits for the night's feast.

Your sisters' unofficial domain is a large house near the Heir's Castle. Your father had it built over a decade ago when it became obvious that the Heir's Castle simply wasn't big enough to accommodate all his lovers and children. These days…

"That idiot? He's cheating on his wife with his wife's niece, and his father-in-law is his major backer. It's not a stable investment."

"I don't have time for losers who don't know how to use their collateral effectively. If you can borrow, borrow and invest the money. That captain wasn't bad though. If he comes back from Vitland, I might let him court me."

"Should we invite Nathalie to join us? The new discoveries made by those Gaulic enchanters are a little suspicious…"

"You think they're working with Parlan without anyone knowing?"

"I think if they were working with Parlan, we would know already. That's why I'm so suspicious."

You're not even on their doorstep yep, but you can already hear them.

"They all seem quite diligent," Vitaliya says.

"They had very diligent role models." You open the door and enter the house. "Sisters! Vitaliya just arrived! Come greet her."

It's not just the entrance. The walls of the sitting room are lined with bookshelves, but it's still not enough to hold all the documents your sisters use. The classification they invented to keep track of it all is quite impressive though.

"It's difficult being the older sibling, isn't it?" Vitaliya asks. "My younger siblings tease me all the time."

"I could deal with it if they didn't come up with new things all the time," you complain.

"Perhaps you're simply too easy to tease, your majesty," Morgan says.

"Can't you start me off with an easy theft instead?"

"Why from all three consorts and two concubines."

Goddamn it, Morgan!

...

The silver lining here is that the situation can't possibly get much worse. Vitaliya decided to meet your other lovers immediately. You briefly hoped that summons from your parents would distract her, but instead, everyone ended up coming along.

Everyone.

You sit on one side of the table, accompanied by Vitaliya, Morgan, Rois, Maeve, Liesel and Nathalie, while all your parents sit on the other side and take pleasure in your discomfort.

And Vitaliya is having a very engaged discussion with Rois and Maeve.

"It took us a few tries," Rois says, "but once we figured it out, Prince Rhein has -"

"As amusing as this all is, you can finish that conversation later, Lady Rois," your father mercifully interrupts. "I'm afraid this conversation has more to do with business than pleasure."

"Of course, your majesty," Rois says.

"It's appropriate that you're all here, since Prince Rhein will require your support in this matter," your mother says. "Ever since the Svekkan Revolution, our chief concern has been to find a way to bring a stable peace to the continent."

"This marriage will tie Olstren, Gwyrddarfordir and Rosea together," King Meirion continues. "Svekka will be represented as well, thanks to Lady Liesel. Rhein, you must capitalize on this opportunity."

"What do you need me to do, father?

"Unify the continent," your father answers. "This will be your first responsibility as king. How you do it is up to you."

That's certainly not a small ambition.

"We'll start by investing in scientific and arcane research," you decide. "With Olstren's position and connections, it's possible to important goods from Parlan and Vitland, and our economy has been steadily increasing for the past 20 years. After that, we can create a continental confederation that allows all the kingdoms to centralize their interests. No one will be left behind."

"That's quite an ambitious plan," Liesel says. "I quite like it."

"So long as the funds flow to Ulainn, I'm fine with it," Rois says.

Maeve snorts. "Scathn is obviously better suited to this project," she says.

"It's an admirable goal." Vitaliya smiles and takes your hand. "I'll support to the fullest."

"It's the best option if we look at long-term prosperity," Esyllt says. "I'll ask my contacts how they can contribute. You can get started in a month or so."

"Don't disappoint your mother, son," your father says.

"Yes, father."

Having decided the future of an entire continent in a single conversation, you retire to get ready for the wedding.

Really, it isn't much of a ceremony. The former King Connaught says a few words praising his grandson and his wife, the current Queen Reagan says a few words praising her son and his wife, and then everyone starts drinking.

"Olstren's parties are always so amusing," Vitaliya says. "We drink as much in Rosea, but it takes a long time for people to really enjoy themselves."

As embarrassing as it is to admit, you're going to need your father to talk you through this. You empty a cup of wine to steel yourself and meet with him just as he's coming back from the dance floor with Olwen.

"Father, I was wondering -"

"Use your hands to tire them out if you need to, do everything to make sure Vitaliya gets pregnant first, arrange your schedule so they're not all pregnant at the same time and -"

"If one of them wants to get pregnant," Olwen says, "get her pregnant."

Your father rolls his eyes. "We had three sons together. Are you still - Ow! Don't stab me in the kidney!"

You laugh. "Thank you, father," you say. "I think that's everything I need to know."

Your father returns to the dance floor with Eleri and you return to your table.

"Is everything alright, Rhein?" Vitaliya asks.

"It's fine," you say. "I just need to consult my father about something. Shall we dance?"

"Certainly!"

You walk back to your room a few hours and pull your boots off. No one makes a big deal of the fact that Vitaliya, Rois, Maeve, Liesel, Morgan and Nathalie accompanied you.

Vitaliya unties her dress' strings and lets it drop to the floor. "Okay, I'm ready," she says. "How are we doing this?"

You all stare at her, and not just because she's naked.

"Huh," Morgan says dumbly. "You're more excited about this than Maeve and Rois, and they're the ones who beg for it the most."

"Now, now," Nathalie says. "Isn't it fine that her majesty is looking forward to this?"

"I was the last the join in, so it's nice to enjoy the novelty of a new person for once," Liesel says.

Rois and Maeve both shrug and look at you.

>Give Vitaliya you undivided attention while everyone watches.
>Everyone gives Vitaliya their full attention.
>Everyone gets their turn, same as usual.

You take your shirt off and toss it on top of Maeve and Rois' dresses.

"Since this is Vitaliya's first time," you say, "we should give her our full attention."

Vitaliya blinks. "What does that mean?"

"It means we're going to teach your body about carnal pleasures," Liesel says. "Just let us know what does it for you."

. . .

Vitaliya lies on top of you, panting for breath. Everyone else is sound asleep. You close your eyes and stroke your new wife's hair.

"I hope we can have a son soon," she says. "Your little project isn't something we can do on our own."

"I know," you say, "but that's why we have each other and everyone else."

And that is it for Beleaguered Prince Quest after a little over a year. It was a lot of fun, but it's probably the last Quest I'll be running on /qst/. I didn't want to quit halfway, but this board just doesn't have the traffic or the features to make running a quest really worth it.

For those of you who want to follow by current projects, I'm running Modern Shinobi Quest and Metal Gear Solid: Heaven's Orphans on https://fiction.live/live, so you can check that out.

Thanks for playing!

It was a great quest all the way to the end, thanks for running.

Thanks for the ride, it's been a hell of a good time. Wish my schedule worked out that I could stick around for an entire thread, but lurking works too. I'll be following on akun!

Just wanted to say that I've been reading the archives to this quest, and while I didn't get the chance to participate, I'm glad that they'll at least be an ending waiting for me when I finish. I like your stuff so far and I honestly believe I'll love reading the quest from start to finish. Thanks for running man.

Thanks for the ride, QM.

Eh. Honestly I found the dice system WAY too benevolent. Everything else was pretty awesome though.

I like reading in the archives, but I never bothered playing after the 30th thread or so because it seemed like we just couldn't fail. Too easy to float crits constantly.

I really look forward to the next quest though.
