Welcome back, Warriors of Phaeton, to the 90th installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! I'm Wong, your host and today you are Admiral...er, PIRATE KING...Roarke Susan Starwind, pilot of the Knuckle Kaiser and master of the Iron Kestrels Space Pirate Fleet, now the independent country of Phaeton.

Last time, you negotiated your way into the Solar System League and secured a duel with Major Bethany Cabot, the killer of your brother, who seemed far more eager to fight you than Fairchild was to indulge your demands in any fashion whatsoever. Too bad for her.

After a moment, Fairchild's remaining soldiers follow her, trooping behind her in a desultory gaggle quite unlike the crisp formation they had when they arrived. Perhaps no one wants to be the closest to her right now.

“Let us speak again after this matter is resolved. Perhaps at the concert?” Asim suggests.

You just nod, your mind already a full day ahead of everyone else. You can practically feel the Knuckle Kaiser tearing Cabot apart already, but fortunately Rosita is considerably more politic.

“You won't be able to hear a thing over Lysa and I.” She jokes, “...But after that, I'm sure Roarke will be feeling more calm and we can do...whatever it is the League actually does besides bothering us here in the Belt.”

“We'll have a meeting to discuss the state of the war, most likely.” General Hatsheput chimes in. “I can't promise anything, new orders may come down the pipe, especially if the Chairman really is going to appoint a War Marshall. I can, however, tell you that the most likely course of action is that you're asked to send a token force along with the next offensive against Avalon as proof of alliance. Getting your banner on JNN would send a strong message to the people of the United Jovian Colonies. I don't expect Fairchild will be very happy about this, and I don't want to speculate at her emotional state after the duel...but I don't see how we can keep her out of this. Like her or not, she has a lot of power, a lot of soldiers, and a lot of sway over the war effort right now.”

“You're both awfully confident that he'll win. What happens if he loses? Hypothetically speaking, of course, is there still a Phaeton? Who would be in charge of it?” Colonel Luxol, the one you gather is one of the Chairman's sons or something, inquires, “Major Cabot is quite the skilled pilot according to my sources, and whatever this Nightmare is, it's going to be of SOUL quality at minimum.”

“You mean you don't know what it is?” You notice his insignia, “Aren't you with SOUL?”

Colonel Luxol smiles and shrugs, “General Fairchild isn't exactly the most forthcoming woman, what goes on in the mechbays of her personal battleship are something even I'm not privy to. Colonel Stern, sir?” He turns to the other Colonel.

Stern shakes his head, frowning, “She's kept me even further in the dark than you. An old grudge, I think. I'm afraid you're on your own, Roarke, and at a disadvantage. She knows just what your mech is capable of, unless you've had another miraculous upgrade since you fought the Praetorian Guard, and you don't know what her new mech can do.”

General Hatsheput frowned, “I still can't believe someone uploaded that footage to the holonet, honestly, morale has been awful.”

The soldiers behind her, all nod. They have an insignia on their shoulders, not SOUL, but a Roman-style helmet whose horsehair crest forms the shape of a bird's wing, white lined in silver. It must be the emblem of the Praetorian Guards.

Rosita smiles her sweetest smile, “Oh dear, what a pity~”

“But my question remains, what if he loses?” Colonel Luxol is polite, but persistent.

“Bakana! You don't understand aniki's spirit at all!” Oda breaks his silence, shaking his head, “He won't lose. His spirit is full and hers is empty.”

You nod, but inwardly...this isn't such a sure thing. You've faced truly difficult opponents before, and that sense of invincibility you had when you first acquired the Knuckle Kaiser has worn a little thin after encountering truly challenging enemies with zero backup. The first Slayer managed to wound your mech and could have destroyed it with a bit more luck, it wasn't prepared for your armor. Rashad damaged your powerplant. Loriette's dance with you was the most difficult battle of your life.

Colonel Stern looks you in the eye as the various delegates stand up to leave, shaking hands all around, “I'll tell you something I told one of your wives, once.” He says gravely, “Revenge is a thorny, muddy road, and it leads you nowhere. It doesn't bring back the people you've lost, it doesn't make you feel whole again. You have a lot more to protect now, if you said you were joking about the duel I'm sure General Fairchild would happily accept it.”

“No.” You agree, surprised by how sad your voice sounds, “No, it doesn't, nothing can bring back my brother or my captain or my squadmates, or Oda's old First Mate, or any of the crew we lost fighting the Green Skulls. Yes, it's true I have a lot to protect now, but that's why I have to do this. As long as Fairchild has her hatchetwoman around, none of us are truly safe. It's time for an ending, and fate's delivered me the chance to deliver it. I won't turn it down. Even if I don't feel better afterwards, this is the right thing to do.”

He nods, a slight smile appearing, “As one man to another, I can't gainsay your decision. Good luck, Admi-er, Pirate King Starwind.” He bows, and you bow back.

Leaving the meeting, Miles and Captain Flint wait until out of earshot of the delegates and both start speaking at once. Moses Flint closes his mouth, perhaps out of respect for Miles' new position, and she preens a little before she says it plainly, “Dude, Fairchild is going to cheat. She's going to cheat her ass off and you know it.”

“I know, I'm prepared for that.” You respond firmly, “Twenty-four hours to prepare Cabot's mech? She's plotting something...but if she thinks another one of those weird drone mecha will fool me, she's wrong. I know what to look for when I see them now.”

“Sir, with all due respect.” Flint interjects, “I advise you launch an immediate military strike to seize General Hermione Fairchild, her subordinates, and her starship. It's up to you whether you have the duel, it's your way even if I think it's a damnfool thing sometimes, but there's no sense in just letting her scheme. I think her own people there aren't exactly her friends, we could have their support with a few words and a carefully-prepared story.”

Captain Oda shakes his head, “You don't understand aniki either! He'll let her line up her scheme and then cleave it down the middle! It's the only way to crush her evil soul! To truly defeat someone, you have to beat them at their strongest!”

You glance at Beckingham, “What do you think, Harold?”

Captain Beckingham looks up from his PC, his prosthetic eye swiveling towards you, and frowns, “Sorry, sir...I mean, your Majesty, I've been trying to reach Bruce Kelly. Apparently his woman, Rebecca...”

“I always thought her name was Sheila?” You remember her vaguely. Short, kind of slender, rather unusual accent.

“No, no, in Bruce's dialect that just means 'woman', he says she's been missing since the start of the Tournament. Went off into the woods on a hunting trip after they had a tiff and vanished, he's gone looking for her. He's supposed to be my First Mate, but he's utterly irresponsible sometimes.” Beckingham clicks his tongue in dismay over his friend's behavior.

As you're exiting the palace, a Jovian soldier leaps from the window above and lands in front of you in a crouch. She has a pair of curved monoswords dangling from her belt, with a Lieutenant's insignia and the mark of the Praetorian Guard on her shoulder.

“What is it now?” You ask, wearily...but she doesn't even acknowledge you, stalking forward and removing her helmet. You recognize her, “Ah, Lieutenant Jane Mappa, wasn't it? Sorry about deceiving you, it was all part of a heist...” Your voice trails off as she walks past you, pushing Red Siren aside with her forearm. The idol squawks indignantly at her, but she doesn't seem to care. Jane Mappa walks right up to Oda and grabs him by the neckline of his kimono.

“Ryan! You...you...” Her expression can't seem to choose between happy and enraged.

“Eh? Gomen nasai, I know you from somewhere, don't I?” Oda scratches his head, looking confused and uncomfortable. “What Ryan?”

Her face decides 'annoyed' is a fine expression to wear, “Don't give me that! Even if you changed your name, I'd know you anywhere! Don't you remember me? Jane? Jane Mappa?” She bunches her hands in her hair to form the shape of pigtails, “Remember? I used to look like this?”

Oda takes a step back, shrugging, “Ah, were you the girl who worked at Blue Oni Sushi back when I was first studying the blade? I'm sorry, I really don't know you.”

I kinda want to expand Roarke's titles. King Roarke Starwind I, Lord Admiral of Phaeton and Master of the Belt.

Lord Admiral, because he's the supreme military commander of Phaeton. Master of the Belt because he's laying claim to it's ownership. Two titles that actually matter and can be passed on.

Her expression becomes confused, “No, Jane MAPPA. I became Master O'Leary's pupil a year or so after you? We had classes together? I was always a few steps behind you? Don't you remember?”

“Gomen nasai again, it doesn't ring any bells.” Oda adjusts the collar of his kimono.

“I made you lunch!” She snaps, “Three separate times! THREE!”

The big guy pokes his index fingertips together, “Uh, um. I remember a lot of tasty lunches.”

Jane Mappa's confused look becomes a scowl, one eyebrow twitching, “You...you mean...all of that time and you didn't even NOTICE me!? Draw your swords, Ryan! I'm here to deliver divine punishment!” Her swords flash from their scabbards, only to be intercepted by Oda's own. Hers have atypically long handles. She grins, and with a flourish...reveals the reason why, twisting the swords around to remove the shorter sheaths covering the short, dagger-like blades sticking out from the pommels of her monoswords.

Oh, right, she did say something about spending her life developing a four-swords style to impress some boy, but you must have deliberately forgotten it, it seemed dumb then and it still seems dumb now.

Flint starts to draw his gun, but Red Siren smacks his hand away, “Let it be, right darling? Oda can handle his problems himself.”

“Aniki! W-what is this? Uwaaaa!” Blades flash as the combatants dart back and forth, avoiding each other's blows, “Yamete! YAMETE!”

You could help him, but...you don't. This really is something he and Lieutenant Mappa have to work out for themselves. You need to see Karen, you need to check on your mech. “Good luck, Captain! Don't lose, Lieutenant!” You call out over your shoulder as you and your comrades trudge away, Red Siren to a rehearsal, the Captains to their ships, and you back to the Rhinehawk for the sake of your mech.

... Huh, I never noticed that before.

So, white skull surrounded by a golden ring on a black field?

Is there a symbol fairly synonymous with the belt itself? A ring (or is the orbit more ovular, I forget), symbol/rune/kanji, asteroid something or other? Maybe an item usually onlt found in use by belters, like a charm? I dunno? Needs to be simple enough to work for a national flag that a grade school student can actually draw and is easy to make out from a distance other than right next to it. Ohhhhh could we have a non rectangular flag, like a square, or maybe something more Nepal like? Oh here's a nice unrelated pic.
>>
>>1662114
>a non rectangular flag
Boo
>>
>>1662113
Regimental flags man.
>>
>>1662113
We could do as the British empire did and have our symbol incorporated in a corner, or just have fleets and groups run 2 flags, ours and theirs. Either works really.
>>
>>1662114
I wanted to go with a ring to symbolize the belt and the unity of the various pirate groups and belt colonies.

Speaking of which, how many known colonies are actually in the Belt and how many are part of Phaeton?
>>
>>1662121
>>1662122

State flags are a thing and I'd rather the groups keep their flags to emphasize their origins.

Phaeton itself would get a new flag in order to emphasize that they're all part of it. All groups run the Phaeton flag and their own flags.
>>
>>1662130
Having them keep their own flags is a bad idea since it goes against the new identity as one unified state. We want to make this into one giant pirate band and not dozens working together.
>>
>>1662130
They can keep their flags but they'll be flown internally or at parades.

With the formation of a new state, they are folded into the national militia. Which needs a single unified flag.
>>
>>1662136
Tell that to the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_United_States_Armed_Forces
>>
>>1662136
Howabout >>1662137 then?

And I'm pretty sure that the original 13 colonies kept their flags when the US was formed.
>>
>>1662145
They all use the US flag, the Flag Officers flags are different from this because those flag officers we're never part of an autonomous nation like these pirate bands were.

You head straight for the mechbay. One of the technicians, trying hard to look like he's working rather than slacking off, gives you a sidelong look, “Ey boss. Uh, any chance we get the night off? I mean, for celebrating our independence and stuff?”

You hesitate, chewing over a response, “I need my mech completely ready and prepped for a combat engagement tomorrow. Once that's taken care of, sure. If you tell me who told you what happened at the negotiations.”

The mechanic looks uncomfortable, “Well...it was just in passin', some of us boys were playin' cards with the Bosun, and he got a message from his girl. Was it supposed to be a secret?”

You think about it and shake your head, “Not really. Go spread the news, then go have yourself a party. Hoist a pint for me, will you? I wish I could be there.”

“You need to take it more easy, boss. Time was, you'd have been the first one drinkin'. All of this bein' King stuff and bullyin' the UJCIDF, don't let it change who you are. Us old hands looked up to you even back when we were one ship and you piloted a Harpy, we're already impressed enough.” His ugly face twists in a smile.

You grin, “Thanks for the advice, I promise not to stay sober. After all, a duel at high noon is traditional, I don't have to wake up that early.”

“That's the Dude I know!” The tech crows.

Karen, overhearing, skips over, nearly tripping in a tangle of plastic piping, “Hey, what meatheaded idiot left this here!?”

The technician vanishes so quickly you'd expect he had a stealth system of his own.

Karen grumbles, making her way to you with a smile, “So, how did it go? You don't look like they chewed you up too much?” She circles around you like an inquisitive terrier around a german shepherd, “So, you're a King now? You still just look like Roarke to me, messy hair and all.” She grins.

“And that's all I want to be.” You pull her pigtails, “Yeah, everything went just fine, we got what we wanted...so far...and tomorrow...tomorrow.” You grin like your mech does, “Tomorrow I'm going to smear the woman who killed Cassius across space like the mosquito she is.” You clench your fist, heart pounding with anticipation.

“Oh, great. Another duel.” Karen tries to play deadpan, but she's smiling, “I'll have the Kaiser prepped and ready, then.” She goes up on tiptoe to kiss you, “Just...keep coming back alive, okay? Don't make me avenge you. I'd have to fight the others to get there first and that wouldn't go well for me.”

“Don't sell yourself short.” You joke, kissing her.

A girl makes her way through the crowd. A girl in a familiar uniform, one you've worn plenty of times, the garb of a mail carrier. She has long legs, a youthful smile, and even makes the cap look jaunty over her two long, ink-black sidetails. She's holding some kind of thin, flat package wrapped in yellow-tan paper, “Personal missive for the Pirate King Roarke S. Starwind.” She chirps.

Karen grabs it and runs it under a scanner.

“Hey!” The girl protests, “Don't you have manners!? He hasn't signed for it!” She proffers her PC with a holoscreen brought up for you to sign with your fingertip.

“Huh, just paper and vegetable ink.” Karen shrugs, “Manners, sure, but I also have a wedding day coming up, and it just won't be the same without him. I'd rather be bitchy and careful than sweet and careless.”

You give the girl a large tip and a small apology. She smiles, thanks you, and vanishes back into the crowd. You open it. There are, indeed, just a few sheets of old-fashioned paper inside, with apparently handwritten writing. You take out the first sheet, which is in different handwriting and has your name clearly written in the heading.

They we're all autonomous groups before us that followed their own way of doing things. That's in the past they need to now hold Phaeton as more important than their old groups.
>>
>>1662197
Still I think breaking up their fleets and removing all their individuality would be a poor move in this. Baring a major reorg of our military forces to create standardised units, our current fleets are still going to work together in their current configuration as small militia groups working under a combined umbrella. Which means their current captains still hold much political and military sway.

Let them keep their old flags as regimental or fleet unit standards and have them fly the new combined naval forces flag.

'To His Sovereign Majesty, Roarke Starwind, Pirate King of Phaeton, Protector of the Solar Asteroid Belt, Woe of the Unjust and Defender of the Dispossessed, fond greetings and reluctant farewells.

Alas, protocol and the need to serve the Queen as best as I am able prevented me from speaking candidly of my reasons for abandoning Countess Loriette le Kennedy before the other parties at our last meeting. It was difficult to determine how to tell you and Loriette the truth, and after much soul-searching and realizing that it is a task a worn-out fighter like myself is poorly suited for I decided to copy the orders I was given and attach them to this missive for Loriette's perusal. Be kind to her when she reads them, she will need you. To summarize, her rank as a Paladin has been stripped from her, along with the lands and privileges her rank confers, although it has not been formally removed. This act, which I had not believed possible, is apparently sanctioned by the Lady. You must know, Roarke, that I was there when the Lady fell from the sky. I have always believed that she is kindness and justice incarnate, and fought for her on many battlefields, yet since our orders were given to raid the Solar System we have received numerous charges that carelessly breach the bounds of honor, including the injustices done to Naomi Heim, which I am attempting on my own to rectify in my way. Children in love deserve a happy ending, and perhaps I can in some small way deliver it to them. As perhaps I am giving it to you and Loriette. I digress, however, even in writing I find I do not want to confront the truth that has occurred to me, the vile thought that will not let me rest in peace. Is there anything more patient than an immortal being? Would it not be possible for a woman whose intelligence and cunning outmatch that of any regular human to adopt a saint's facade for decades, only to discard it when the need arises? Perhaps I am wrong. I pray earnestly every night that I simply fail to understand, or that someone has counterfeited the instructions we have been given. Whichever way those pieces fall, however, my course is clear. I am a Paladin and a Duke of Avalon, I must deal out justice to those deserving of it. What has been done to these girls was not simply cruel, it was unfeeling, an emotionless and calculated act for maximum benefit at the cost of the innocent, and I cannot let it lie. This course may damn me, but it is one I have set and cannot turn away from now. This may be the last time we speak, but despite the adverse circumstances preventing us from being comrades, know that I hold you in the highest esteem. I cannot ask for the Lady's blessing on you any longer, or on me, but I earnestly hope things go well for you. May your enemies tremble before you, and may your friends know joy in your company. I wish I could have stayed long for the wedding, but alas we must leave promptly.

Sincerest regards, Duke Eustace de Rothschild-Beauchamps.'

...That's a lot to take in. You don't read the part of the message that's for Loriette, that's for her eyes, not yours, but something else is bothering you.

“Karen, what was the name of that technician?” You ask, quietly, “He claimed to be an old hand, but...I don't remember him.” He did look the part, middle-aged, weathered grey hair sticking out from under a faux-wool cap, squinty eyes, wrinkles that looked deeper than they actually were. For some reason, the image of the girl who delivered the package lingers in your mind, an oddly incongruous recollection...

“Uh, I don't know. He joined right around the time we beat the Green Skulls, I think. Blitzen or something, I really don't remember.” She scowls, “I do know that he's lazy, he's already left to go celebrate and I've hardly ever seen him work on a mech as much as he seems to like looking at them and their blueprints. I always pegged him as more of an enthusiast than someone with real skill.”

...Until you remember the last time you dressed up as a mail carrier, disguised as an old man. No wonder those wrinkles only looked deep!

A cold hook sinks into your stomach as you realize why, exactly, the man you're supposed to be chasing for that bounty looked so familiar. It's him. Pale Slayer Meridian has been on your goddamned ship for months.

How valuable is that +1 to accuracy that Beam Weapons get for a grunt soldier?
>>
>>1662430
Any increase to accuracy is a good one, IMO.

Strictly speaking, unless you want the advantages that specialized projectile ammo can bring, it's best to stick with beams.
>>
>>1662430
Its pretty good. Makes them more likely to hit in the first place and to crit.
>>
You turn and sprint after him, “Karen, run a complete check on the Rhinehawk's security systems! He's a spy!”

“W-what? Hey, Roarke!” She yells after you, but you're already gone. You sprint to the exit of the ship, ignoring the questions from your crew, and struggle to get through the milling crowd of technicians on their way to the shore leave you just gave them. Apparently Meridian told them all you'd generously given them the night off. You're surrounded by smiling faces, cheers, and arms reaching up to pat you on the back, along with unsolicited opinions about what's next for the Kestrels after becoming a country.

The ship is currently docked, connected by an umbilical to the Colony, and as you exit the tube you see him standing there at the door of the spaceport. With a mocking smile, he pulls off his cap and bows to you, grey hair hanging over his face, then reaches up to his jaw. Slowly, while maintaining eye contact, he peels the skin off his lower jaw, across his chin, and up the upper side until it's gone, revealing gleaming steel and sharp-looking exposed teeth. Whoever designed his extensive prosthetics had a flair for the macabre. Straightening his back, which makes you realize he'd been intentionally hunching his shoulders in to feign bad posture, he turns away, shrugging off his coat and tossing it behind him as he walks out the door and into the reveling crowd of partygoers.

Did you miss the part where he infiltrated our ship months ago?

Ignoring that, I'm worried he's setting a trap for us. Somehow, he knew that we were following him.

>Did you miss the part where he infiltrated our ship months ago?
You mean, while in disguise? That's just a tad different from a metal man walking around on the street.

But he's obviously leading us to a trap if we follow.
>>
>>1662491
>>[Back to the ship, you still need to show Loriette that missive and can't be running around after ghosts all night]
Why tonight of all nights? He's going to ambush us and we really do not have the time for it.
>>
>>1662502

You probably would have lost him, then. Also, if you grab a vehicle, that's letting him out of your sight.
>>
>>1662557
Have we a radio or something that we can shout into? Let people know we are chasing down a cyborg spy?
>>
>>1662557
If he's actually still in our sight, can we pursue him above the crowd? Jumping off of shoulders and shit.
>>
>>1662568

Right now, he's actually broken LoS by leaving the building. He's wearing clothes underneath the coat, by the way, so you're not just looking for the gleam of metal.

>>1662566

You can yell for the guards if you want to do this 100% non-subtly and let people know there was a spy on your ship.
>>
>>1662578
In that case, forget it. If he's broken LoS, there's no point in pursuing him.

Can we put Sam and Clemmy on the case?
>>
>>1662578
I'm not 100% sure why we would want to do this subtle. Its not like we arent hilariously easy to infiltrate right now anyway.
>>
>>1662578
Scream out into the crowd your offering a bounty on a man who is a cyborg and then watch for someone to start running.
>>
>>1662491
>[Back to the ship, you still need to show Loriette that missive and can't be running around after ghosts all night]
>>
>>1662593
There's probably a bunch of cyborgs in that crowd you know.

If you shout, "That girly-looking guy with the metal jaw," you'd probably have more success.
>>
>>1662491
>[Back to the ship, you still need to show Loriette that missive and can't be running around after ghosts all night]

Fuck chasing him now.
>>
>>1662601
Either or, point is to get the crowd searching for him.
>>
Hey Wong since the vote lost, if we did take Raiden's head back to the tech would we have been able to find out info about the Nightmare from him?
>>
>>1662578
Fuck that. Scream out a bounty. A kiss from either your or Rosita and a bunch if money.
>>
>>1662606
>>1662634

All you're going to get is a bunch of dead people that way.
>>
Alright, it's a bit hard to tell what the actual vote tally is with all of the clarifications and stuff.

Vote here on whether to follow him or go back. Keep in mind that you've heard of this guy and even on his own he's supposed to be bad news, so don't say I didn't warn you.

...That's also a good argument against just yelling out "a thousand credits if you grab that guy with the metal jaw", some of your crew might die if they went for it.
>>
>>1662643
>[Go Back]

Put Sam and Clemmy on the case.
>>
>>1662643
>Chase after him
I'd rather catch him now then give him a chance to escape and cause more problems down the road.
>>
>>1662630

I'm not entirely sure it did lose, yet, people changed a lot of their votes. I guarantee this wasn't your one and only opportunity and I consider it a given that you're going to quietly ensure he doesn't sneak on a transport off Auditorium or something.

Why would you have been able to find out anything about the Nightmare, a mech Fairchild has, from a member of Five Man Band?
>>
>>1662643
Don't follow. we have a duel to concentrate on.

>>
>>1662653

>>
>>1662731
>>1662724
>>1662718
ok, i can definitely change that.
>>
>>1662715
Well the initial base model the kaiser came from was a heavy jovian model that was essentially a UC gundam Dom so the torso, while likely somewhat different now after all the customization (so some leway for interpretation), should be beefy like a Dom's square-ish torso (although again, lotta possibilty for slight variation). And the rip and tear hands should be much beefier, think abaddon's powerclaw from 40k. You put so much work into that beauty though I almost don't want to offer these criticisms, great job!
>>
>>1662696
Considering what Wong said, you could bulk up the torso and arms, keep the shields the same size and shrink the legs. That might be the most accurate version of the Kaiser.
>>
>>1662738
>>1662737
I think it's the Jesta that would have the most accurate chest.
>>
>>1662739
Eh, even if he expanded the chest and arms alone the head and legs would still be proportional, and a bigger chest (assuming the arms are beefed up but not lengthened) would slightly widen where the arms joined, so they're not so close to the torso, so they can be beefed up without crowding or cliping into the chest. Just thinking of what would take the least effort. Keep in mind I know jack shit about 3d modelling. Anyway though I see where you're going with the legs, but I think it will look proportional after the chest and arms are adjusted. I could be wrong though.
>>1662737
Oh and again, great work anon, love that model.
>>
As much as you want to go after him, you have a predator's instincts for danger and stop in your tracks. Yes, the urge to run him down is there...but you know firsthand that prosthetic legs in the modern era don't necessarily slow you down, and if he was built to be more advanced than a human he might actually be faster than you. Besides. He wants you to follow. You saw that with how he taunted you with his reveal. He's counting on you coming after him, and you're too canny to be baited into that trap.

Briefly you consider promising a bounty for whoever grabs him, but you have the feeling that would get a lot of people killed messily. Besides, you have better options. You're already messaging Samantha as you make your way back onto the ship, with the picture you were provided and a timeframe for the relevant security footage to get a good image of the target together. First things first, you'll have any ships leaving Auditorium screened to make sure he doesn't slip away, then you can get to searching the colony itself. Patience and thoroughness, those are the games to play right now.

There are a lot of people who you could fill in on the current situation, that you're now an independent country with all it entails...but they'll hear about it anyway. You have some papers to deliver, and no amount of stalling will make this any less your responsibility, even if none of it is your fault.

You find Loriette in the gym, just finishing up. She's perky and cheerful, “Mon Rowarc! “That's not why.” You manage to get a word in around her.

“Mon duckling...un more night. Just un. For us. Le Duc can wait zat long at least for mon Anseis to resume its duties.” She coos.

“Loriette, you're not going back.” You break it to her gently.

She smiles tremulously, “Oui, you are le pirate superb, who does not relinquish 'is treasures...but go I must, mon sweet peasant prince. Le Lady requires mon blade and mon valor, to vanquish 'er enemies. Do not deny reality, life is 'arsh and separation painful, but someday...per'aps some sweet day your Countess Lori shall see you again, non?” She kisses your cheeks, then your lips. You hug her. You hug her tightly, the papers in your hand. By Jove, Allah, the Christian Lord-God...this isn't easy. You've never been great at delivering bad news, and time hasn't made you much better. As always, all you can do is your best.

“M-Mon Rowarc? I know, le sadness is mutual, but...what is zis? Something is wrong, non?” She asks, quietly.

You release your hold, and hand her the papers, one hand still on her shoulder.

She looks at it, and flips through, “Zis is an official dispatch from le Lady, but...” Then something in it catches her eye, and a sound escapes her throat. You've never heard the noise a rabbit makes when it gets caught in a snare, but you imagine it's similar. The indrawn gasp of sheer shock and pain before the screaming. Her lips quiver, and she starts over from the beginning, “Non. Non. Non non non non nonononononononon!” She shrieks, her legs giving way and spilling her onto the floor. Her chest heaves as, unabashedly, she begins to cry.

You sit down with her, take her into your arms, and hold her tight. You didn't know all of the details, but...you know enough. The gym empties rapidly, people can respect the Pirate King comforting a grieving noblewoman, until it's just the two of you and the sound of her tears echoing off the wall. She looks up at you, an almost childlike expression of loss and abandonment on her face, “Rowarc, I...I failed a goddess, ze only goddess, ze...ze only one who believed in me.”

“No.” Your voice shouldn't be angry, you didn't intend for it to be anything but comforting, but you can hear the anger in it like a thick, red blot spreading through soft gauze, “No you didn't, and no she isn't. I believe in you, Lori, and you didn't fail. Nobody deserves this.”

“Non!” She shakes her head vigorously in denial, “I...I am...non, I was a Paladin, a warrior without peer...”

“Well, three have been shot down, and one went missing, right? You're hardly the first.” You regret the words slightly once you've said them, but it's true.

“Mon lands...mon...people...le castle and le towns and...and all who looked up to me, everyzing and everyone I fought for, zhey're all...” Her fingers dig into your shoulders, and she buries her face in your chest, a wet spot spreading across your shirt from her tears of pain and grief, “All of mon effort...even ze lives of mon cuzzin's sire and beau...all of it, wasted. In le end even with zhese legs I couldn't take a single step forward.”

“I...I should never have strayed outside...” She sobs, and for several long minutes, you're not sure quite how long, all you do is hold her.

Eventually, though, you find the right thing to say. You stand up with her. She leans on you, her legs wobbly, “You can stand, right?” You say softly. It means more than just those four words normally do.

She nods, but doesn't say anything.

“If you stayed where you were, in that castle, as someone who couldn't walk for herself...we never would have met.” Your voice is raw, and you take off your sunglasses to look into her eyes, “I don't know the Lady or...or how she sees the galaxy and the people in it. I don't know and...and you know my feelings on her people to begin with, but...I know you. I know you and I know that you are one of the strongest people I know, and you'll keep on fighting even if you're fighting for something new, for a tomorrow shaped by your hands and nobody else's, or for a cause you believe in. I know, saying anything at all probably isn't welcome right now...but it's true.”

Her lower lip trembles, “Non, Rowarc, non...you are lovely, but I, I am nothing! I 'ave no lands now, no castle to show you, no green fields to run through with you, le lake where I would feed ducks...I can never...I dreamed...I dreamed someday I would show you...it...it's so silly, non? Zhese tiny, fragile wishes should not mean so much, and yet...oh Rowarc, mon cour breaks to lose them.”

“A lady of the Belt can take what she wants, even if she is no longer a lady of Avalon.” You're not sure where the words come from, but they're just...there, and they ring with undeniable truth.

“B-but I am no more a Countess!” She babbles, “Rowarc, even if mon title is not rescinded, a noble is more zhan zat, mon land and mon status as a Paladin is...mmmph!” Her words are hushed as you kiss her.

Eventually, you break the kiss, “I don't care. That's part of being who I am, the sort of noble I have become, someone who can take what he wants...and someday, I'll feed those ducks with you, and see your castle, and everything. We'll take it back.”

She blinks at you, big blue eyes wide and tearstreaked, “H-how?”

“Marry me.” You state plainly, “Become my wife.”

“Half of them hated each other when they met.” You inform her with complete and total honesty, “Karen likes you, and Rosita thinks of you as a dear friend. She sighs, and smiles sadly, “I suppose you 'ad no choice...”

“Lori, the love and dedication you've shown, your unrelenting courage and the way you care for your people...none of it was in vain. You won me. Even if I'm just a poor pirate from the streets of Io who's had some fortune in life, I can see that who you are is a woman worth following, a woman worth loving, a woman who IS noble whether or not she IS a noble...and I want you to be my wife. Please marry me.” You take her hands in yours, and squeeze them.

She looks up at you with a heartfelt, teary smile, and this time it's not just sadness making her voice quiver as she nods, “Oui, mon peasant King. Mon beloved Rowarc.”

I fucking loved this thread.

Am a big fan of the mecha action but you do write characters I enjoy reading Wong. you made me actually care about Lori as a character, a lot.

Also, I've been thinking of how to stat up the Alteisen Reise and the Rein Weissritter in Mekton Zeta now. Any thoughts on what the weaponry would scale to be if they were built in This setting Weiss would probably be slower, which would just have to to be reasonable. am not sure if the speed of the Weiss is stat-able in Mekton, not sure how it scales up.

Fatima? Grew up RICH. Sam? Grew up slightly less rich. Clemmy? Awesome murder-hobo, but that's where it ends. Karen? Queen of her mech-bay, scrub everywhere else, and even then she stands on her Grandpas shoulders. Indeed, Loriette should probably take her under her wing socially.

Loriette comes in second for capability, since she took back her household as a young crippled child with no allies.

I'm just going to tell you so when it comes up later I can mention it in passing.

Remember that big implied scheme she had at the tournament? Well, she found a way to bring resources to bear on the Iron Kestrels without directly engaging them, namely by using her clout with the Senate to get a bill introduced in the interests of keeping order in the Belt and reducing wartime costs. Namely, any mech in Jovian-patrolled territory larger than Superlight and not specifically licensed for civilian purposes like construction would be commandeered as military property. In short, Jovian troops would no longer need a crime to be going on or any evidence that you're pirates to get a priority call to confiscate any mecha they encountered. Sure, it's unlikely the Knuckle Kaiser would be caught and anyway, you have (or had) a huge bounty on your head so you'd be fair game to begin with...but good luck getting new mecha in without attacking the UJCIDF, and it would definitely cut down your ability to recruit.

...and then Roarke joined the SSL and that bill collapsed immediately because it would be violating the rights of a sovereign nation.

>>1662882

Thank you!

>>1662907

A lot of Samantha's character development was very early on, which is why she's popular with many of the older players. Also Karen might not have worked up the courage to actually try to be open with Roarke about her feelings if Samantha hadn't befriended her and given her some confidence. Part of Karen's problem is that her growth is subtle and there are a lot of girls who are very up-front and make it harder to see how she's growing. For example, her grandpa is on 16-Psyche now, she's in charge of the mechbay and has had to go from "cute bay mascot" to "bay boss".
>>
>>1662922
Which puts her in acceptable range for Akira.

It was blank for me too but the canon name is Akira Kurusu.

Takemi is very attractive, is one of the most valuable confidants, and has a great story and motivation but she doesn't resonate with me the same way as Makoto does. Also, judging from the way her and Akira's casual scenes go, she is heavily implied to be the canon romance.

But I'll say she's one of the better ones Hews drew for P5 >_>
>>
>>1662931
It would also be directly detrimental to the overall war effort against avalon, considering that significant resources would have to be diverted instead of sent to the front.

This would have effectively open a second front. The SSL's Barbarossa.
>>
>>1662928

Open war against the Iron Kestrels, yes. She'd love that. Remember that originally it was going to be the Green Skulls wiping out or absorbing all the other pirate bands and then getting crushed by the military.

>>1662939

No, because it's from a very Gnostic sense of Satan. Much like how Satan and Lucifer and Helel are different.

Persona 5 uses a lot of Gnostic specific stuff actually. the Demiurge concept comes from Gnostic stuff for sure as well.

The fact she managed to get so much power under her control while being such a crazy monster is both impressive and worrying.
>>
>>1662953
Persona always plays fast and loose with religions.

Still, it really helps reinforce how Chinese Buddhism is really bad fanfiction of Hinduism.
>>
>>1662953 Useful quote. Is from the real world book of Enoch.
"In the second Book of Enoch, Satanael is mentioned as a leader of the fallen angels that rebelled against YHVH, by refusing to bow to the human Enoch, leading to his imprisonment. Due to his name and role, he is considered an interpretation of Lucifer.

In some Gnostic traditions, Satanael is said to be an angel that once served the Demiurge. He rebelled when he realized that the Demiurge was not the true God and granted humanity the knowledge to liberate themselves from the Demiurge. In other traditions, he is said to have created the material universe as a second heaven to rule over and became the God of the Old Testament, making him an interpretation of the Demiurge. "

You spend the night with Loriette, who cries herself to sleep. Sometimes the tears are happy, sometimes they aren't, you hold her all the same.

Despite what you told the disguised Meridian, the next morning you're up early, for an intense workout. Despite your reputation, you haven't fought in a lot of duels that were declared ahead of time, and honestly it's difficult not to get too far into your own head with this one and ruin your mental readiness. You are going to get revenge for Cassius, and that itself is pure elation, the knowledge that you are going to kill Bethany Cabot today. However, you don't become a successful pirate by being fearless. People who completely lack fear are worse off even than people who are ruled by it. Logically, there are things you know based on your prior experiences.

The old S-Slayer's missiles couldn't penetrate your armor. You bet the Nightmare's can.

The old S-Slayer's stealth wasn't good enough to sneak past you. You bet the Nightmare's will be, or more likely it will have stripped away the stealth systems entirely.

The old S-Slayer was bulky and slow. You bet the Nightmare won't be. Fairchild isn't stupid.

You want to go train with the Undefeated, but there isn't time for that, and frequently that training leaves you too exhausted and beaten-up for a mech battle. Instead you're about to call Karen after completing your run when she calls you instead.

“Roarke, it's done!” She interrupts your questions.

“Wait, what's done?” You try to pierce past her habitual enthusiasm.

“I didn't sleep a wink last night, I scoured the Kaiser entirely for any kind of traps, tracers, or other sabotage, completely took it apart, and...well...I added a little something in when I was done.” She sounds so comfortably smug, you can hear her humming cheerfully to herself under her breath.

“What?” You ask, a bit more tersely than usual.

She growls back, “What do you think? It! It's finally ready!”

“What's ready?” You're completely baffled.

“...Oh, that's right, you don't visit the hydroponics garden on the Rhinehawk much, do you?” She sounds very slightly apologetic for snapping at you.

You're even more confused now. “It's been closed for repairs, of course I haven't been there.”

“Oh, that's the official reason, yes.” She replies breezily, probably playing with her braids, “Unofficially, I've been doing a little...gardening. I asked Loriette to keep it a surprise for you, but she says she's never, ever seen a mandrake mature this quickly before. Um, I can disconnect it from the HMIS if you want, or I can enable it. It would definitely make your mech stronger, but...Lori says the first time can be a little...weird. The only time a non-Paladin activated a mech with a mandrake it...went berserk.”

“Fire it up.” You don't hesitate at all.

“W-what? You're sure? Just like that?” She sputters, “I mean, I'm glad you have so much faith in me, but I barely know anything about biotechnology...”

“I'll need it. Activate it.” You insist.

“Alright! Just...just be careful, okay?” She tries to grumble, but the worry is clearly there in her voice.

You can't help laughing, “I always am, these days.” You glance back at the squad of bodyguards who accompanied you on your run. They look about half dead from trying to keep up with you, “Prep multiple squads of our best with epoxy cannons in case of the worst. Rosita, Fatima, Clemmy, and Samantha included. Give Rosita some epoxy guns and tell Fatima to aim for the limbs.”

“Roarke, it...might not be enough.” Karen still sounds worried, “Loriette saw the footage from when we saw the Duke fight. Some of the Kestrels' best aces even with luck on their side could barely scratch him, Lori says it's because of his mandrake.”

“Better to overprepare than underprepare.” You quip.

She sighs, “I'll do it. Hold on...alright, there we go!”

You blink, “Wait, that's it? That took about half a second.”

She laughs into her PC, “It's almost as if I expected you to do the incredibly reckless thing and had everything prepared so it would be ready when you got back.”

“I love you.” You tell her simply, and sincerely.

“I love you too. Come back to me, okay?” She replies, the same way.

Much to your chagrin, the Knuckle Kaiser doesn't look any different. There are a few small, tubular ports about as wide as a pencil built into the cushioning of your pilot seat, but...that's it. The duel is too close at hand to give this thing a full test drive.

You and Fairchild exchange a few terse, last minute messages, mostly single-word replies. You didn't want to let her know the details too early and risk her pulling anything sneaky. You're forced to use Lysa as a go-between, but you have her number and the idol seems extremely happy to have the chance to do you a favor...even if she makes a few subtle jabs about how the last time she did that you locked her under the floorboards and told her boyfriend she was pregnant. You take them with humor, remembering the good times, even if it's a little bit annoying that she claims that Keith's response was a silver lining and that she should be grateful to you for the prank.

You and Cabot meet at one of Auditorium's own mechbays, the one beneath the arena that the contestants used. It's as good a dueling ground as any. Just seeing her face makes you want to crush it into a bloody pulp. Both of you are backed by a handful of guards, while Lysa...clad in pink-trimmed white with a fuzzy hat and a new purse, officiates.

You don't see Fairchild anywhere, “Where's your aunt?” You ask Lysa, deliberately ignoring Cabot's attempt to begin some snarky pre-battle banter.

“She's sitting this one out, I'm afraid. She doesn't approve, and since she wasn't able to stop the Major from fighting you, she's...ah...indisposed.” Lysa's eyes shift away from yours, “...Indisposed and very, very angry. She drank about half a bottle of-”

“Shut up, both of you.” Cabot growls, “I want to kill this prick and go back to Jupiter. I hope they give me a medal for this.”

Lysa shakes her head, “Unlikely, agreeing to this has caused more political chaos than you know...but once you agreed, sitting it out would be worse, so here I am, here you are, and here the Pirate King is.”

“For once, we all agree. Let's do this.” You glance up at the Nightmare. It looks about as large as the Knuckle Kaiser, with something on its back...wings, perhaps? Regardless, it's hard to tell. It's entirely wrapped in a huge, black 'cloak' of tarping and cables, aside from where a hole has been cut to provide access to the cockpit, which protrudes from the gut in a way that makes it resemble the tip of a Scimitar or other Martian mechajet. The head seems to have the two horns you remember, too.

“I'd tell you to go to hell, Starwind, but I'm your personal escort there.” Cabot flashes you an obscene gesture, puts her helmet on, and mounts the liftwire, “I'll see your bitches arrested once I'm done defiling your corpse, you shit!” She calls out.

“I'll be polite and just send yours back to Fairchild.” You call after her, putting your own helmet on and riding your liftwire up. You activate the Kaiser, and as always, it hums with power. That's not unusual, though. It's strange, it doesn't feel any different than normal.

You rise up into the arena, and so does the Nightmare. It apparently has no intention to hide behind the terrain, the same as you, because it floats in midair across from you. One arm is holding something, a long spear with a thin, narrow head...and abruptly, a shimmering, scarlet beam blade nearly as large as your mech's torso sprouts from the weapon's edges. With the other, it whips off its cloak, and you see the monster beneath.

It's...slender, with narrow, stinger-like feet clearly meant more for space than ground combat. Its armor coloration reminds you oddly of an oil slick, charcoal from some angles and gold from others, with scarlet-tinged white trim. It still resembles a demon...but a demon from a different, much older culture, with a narrow-snouted, bestial head and two tall horns or ears. Six blade-shaped 'wings' float behind it, most likely drones, and you hasten to scan it as the Kaiser's own four palms detach and pantomine cracking their knuckles.

I hadn't thought of it until now, but could we use our drones for pinning actions? She needs both her arms to use the Partizan. She still has her foot swords (that she totally ripped off Clemmy) but she won't be able to use the shield until she breaks the pin.
>>
>>1664859
Problem with that is actually hitting her head, between the reactive and variable shield, it's gonna be difficult to break through.
>>
>>1664882
>>1664836
Can we have the drones do this Wong?\

>>1664886
If we want to burn luck we could do a spin kick which should be able to take it out.
>>
>>1664836
If we use the kick, we are going to have to make sure to use as much luck as possible. Drones can grab the weapon, break it, or we can go for it's head and take out all the bits and give her penalties.
>>
>>1664880
In that case I vote for Eye of the Tiger or Don't Fear the Reaper.
>>

>>
>>1664901
Could we use grapple-chan to hold her in place while sending the drones?
>>
>>1664829

No, because reactive shields function ruleswise as an automatic parry, and parries stop grappling.

>>1664882

Yes, also good observation...but again, there's the shield.
>>

>>
Is it fair to say you're doing a dropkick and your drones are all charging? How much Luck do you want to spend on the kick?
>>
>>1664929
I feel like she has a plan for that.
>>
>>1664913
Hmmm.. so it's a case of charging in or not. Still, no reactive shield on the bits means we could grapple them. Because if we get close and fail, then it's 6 melee attacks from the bits and her +3 weapon.

>>1664939

our punches are not strong enough to break the shield. they do 8 kills shield is 10. Our kicks have disruptor so they do double against shields. Drop kick her back removes the penalty and makes it so she can't block with her scythe. We can then go all out with our better chance to hit.
>>
>>1665086
>>1665093

8K punches will not penetrate a 10 SP shield. You need to do at least 11K damage. Or 6K with a kick because of Fatima's upgrade.

She spreads her arms wide as you're scanning her, the blades whirling around her mech's main body as you realize that what you thought was an oil-slick color is caused by a shield that, rather than the usual bubble, is skintight on her mech, restricting its movements less than usual. They face you point on, and she snaps her fingers, side panels opening to display each one possesses five missiles, “One shot each, let's crucify this punk so I can carve his heart out with my heels.” She announces, sounding bored.

It's strange, though...her mech looks smaller than it did a minute ago. Your head feels fuzzy, and you almost feel...itchy...like something is crawling across your skin as you reach out and flip on your music.

Guitar and cowbell. Just what you needed. Some Blue Oyster Cult might seem a little mellow for avenging Cassius, but for some reason, it fits your mood right now. You feel a lot more collected than you expected.

The missiles streak across space towards you...slowly. They're the size of pencils. You, not your mech, take a step to the side, and three of them miss. You raise your arms, and just barely brush two of them aside...but one is low, and skims your left thigh. The explosion is silent, out here in space (-1 left leg SP, 7 remaining).

“You like it?” Cabot taunts, “Your brother's masterpiece! His final work! That fool Luxol's mech had to be transported on board the Iulia Maesa after that moronic old bat commanding the Praetorian Guard had the pieces for the alpha version stolen by your pirates while she was here on Auditorium the first time, and we circumvented his little political games by creating our own version of the Percheron! Behold, the greatest Nightmare, the dream you never wake up from!”

'All our times have come...'

She's laughing, but it's so quiet, too. You have to focus, Cassius is smirking at you, some ridiculous catapult he's built out of the supplies on his desk is pointing another pencil at you, and this time, you're going to catch it.

Who the hell is this girl, anyway? She stole something from your brother, didn't she?

She's got -1 SP to her torso armor now, (6 remaining), and her flight system cuts out for 1d6 turns! Her drones can still fly, however!

Her shield, being advanced, will be back up next turn.

Will you...

Well they are 6k missiles and we still have our drones right, for attack, attacking drones, or just interdiction (lookout sir!)? 'Here, but now they're gone...'

That's not nice. You know you don't like it. Your roots quiver with indignation! Plus, that pencil tore your jeans! You grab for the catapult, but Cassius whisks it away, your arm long and metallic. White, rubbery roots wend their way through your circuits.

You duck behind the couch. Cassius is tough and has the advantage of metal legs. You're faster than him, but he's bigger, stronger, and tougher than you.

'Seasons don't fear the reaper...'

You hear the girl swearing, and the roar of her mech's thrusters...except, that's funny, you don't hear them, she's flying towards you, looming just above your hiding place like some murderous angel, the lights forming a halo behind her head as she raises her polearm to strike.

'Nor do the wind, the sun, and the rain...'

This is going to drive you insane. Who is she? What did she steal? And...why do you feel for all that his big-brotherly taunts are ringing in your ears that he's not actually there?

The house you grew up in is empty.

The music vibrates through you. You like the talk of wind, sun, and rain. It makes you think of fields, of countless lives stretching up towards the sky and down, down into the dirt...but still, those questions bother you.

“He's not here because he's dead.” Says the warm, vital, living thing curled up at your heart. Carrot-colored hair flows behind him, along your tendrils. The words themselves are his. The concept of something being carrot-colored at all is his. All things flow from the heart. “She stole his life.”

'We can be like they are...' Yes, yes you can be.

You kick off the wall behind her, zipping past at an angle. Your thrusters move in perfect synch, spinning around without wasting momentum and soaring back towards her, flipping end over end into a somersault axe kick. The modulated thrusters of your foot portfolios react with the shield, making it bubble and lose some of its cohesion, enough for your heel to penetrate.

She falls into the pit, her dorsal thrusters sparking and going dead as your heel digs in between her shoulders (-1 torso SP for her, 6 remaining). Her mech sprawls at the bottom of the trench. You reach up and lift the visor of your helmet to give her an unfriendly grin. Normally you care about cute girls in trouble, but this bitch deserves everything she gets. That's what your heart tells you, and you know to follow your heart.

Why?

Because.

This.

Bitch.

Killed.

Your.

Brother.

Not just him, either, you realize, and somehow that clarity only makes you stronger. How many civilians? How many innocent people who, even if they were military and thus your enemies back then, were just doing their jobs? How much blood has lubricated the machine of this woman's ambition? You think of Minty, with his thin mustache and neat pinstripe suits, and big Thelma with her heavy accent and plans to retire while she's still young enough to marry. You remember the shattered, twisted wreckage of their mecha...and it's so strange, but it's like you're experiencing it for the first time, as if you never saw it before, their bodies twisted and broken like roadkill when you dissected their Harpies for the parts you needed to repair yours enough to survive and find this mighty suit of armor. You remember Captain Ozark. Vividly. As if from your first meeting to when you put the bullet through his forehead at his own request. Years flash by in the time it takes.

You have six fists. Six fists and two legs. Eight fighting limbs, like an octopus! You know what an octopus is because you've seen Species of Earth, it's in your heart. One of the episodes that made your heart the happiest was about warm, shallow oceans. A small girl with glasses and frizzy headroots watched it with you. She thought they were gross until you said you liked them and then she immediately decided she did too. You have warm feelings towards her. Not just in your heart, but everywhere. As if she's touched you more times than you can count, each touch leaving a mark.

Your touch leaves marks too, your fists rain down like hail on the cowering, jackal-headed mech. The third time is the charm, perhaps? You laugh at your own joke.

'Come on baby, don't fear the reaper.' ...Has it really been so little time since you heard the last lyric?

'Baby take my hand...don't fear the reaper.' Oh yes, you give her your hands. All six of them, curled into fists, blue-green fire flashing from your drones as the thrusters ignite to circle and jab.

Man, do you know the repercussions for HER if she isn't in the cockpit right now? This would be her publicly executing someone in her place if she did that. My money would be on her getting arrested on sight across jovian space because no one wants to strain relations with the newly joined nation. Fairchild's political clout wouldn't be enough to keep her safe if she forced someone else to die in her place because everyone is watching this right now. And because she called for the duel. She's fucked unless she kills Roarke. And if she kills Roarke she's fucked anyway because now everyone is just a bunch of pirates again. Honestly this is the worst thing she could have done.

>>
>>1665343
pretty sure Thunder's is a mega crit. She is taking a -2 if they are at her back. I also think her dodge would be 14-15 normally. so 13 for the back punches. First hit takes head, thats another -2. 11 for back attacks.
So head goes because Kaiser arms are linked and it takes two hits. Then a arm goes and the shields are down as well. That means no shield for defense. Reactive or beam.

I don't even think there will be a torso left. Also, with so many crits, we are looking at constant grins.
So cabot is watching as the kaiser, grinning maniacally, maybe more so if Karen added that emotive face, as it rips it to shreds like a kid removing limbs from a doll or toy.

Which just makes me see that as something of another Rance parallel, since Rance has an unlimited level cap and levels relatively quickly.

Of course, he loses all those levels between games because he's a lazy jackass.

It honestly wouldn't be incredibly useful for him. He has a good shield, so he gets more mileage from his lance being Quick instead of Variable.

>>1665486

I know I wrote down all the details at some point, but CC's masterpiece is actually Colonel Luxol's Percheron. The Zulfiqar was made out of the prototype, then the delay forced CC and the Percheron parts onto Fairchild's ship for a while, where she copied the design and built the Nightmare for Cabot, essentially. So you could argue the Percheron is BETTER. I like the Percheron MORE because it's the Zulfiqar taken to its logical conclusion, but the Nightmare might be stronger, I don't know.

To her credit, she didn't scream or show any sign of panic when your visor went up. That's new and different and not NEARLY enough to help her today!

How long has your heart yearned to tear her head off? So with a smile, you clamp your left hand around the back of her mech's skull...and for some reason, it feels a lot easier to just do this yourself than do it the old way, whatever that means...just twist at the right angle until you feel her mech's neck joints grind juuuust right, and with your first blow, you pop that stupid head right off. Without even exerting any pressure, the grinding chainsaw blades in your palm and along your fingers rip the surface of the head to shreds, and as you squeeze just a little her drones fall dead around you like leaves in a terrestrial autumn. It's so beautiful. So beautiful you want to cry big, oily tears...but with your visor up, everyone would see and you're much too cool for that.

You grab for her right shoulder with your right hand, but she's clearly a proper ace and squirms at just the right angle to avoid the stab of your clawed fingers that leaves neat little puncture marks in the plating of the floor. As expected, how slippery...but you have drones, and she does not!

She must have trained endlessly to evade like that, even without seeing, her technique isn't just random wriggling, it's martial arts. Your heart knows well-trained evasions and dodges from mere panicked flailings and can admire the form while regretfully remarking to yourself how she always has been a slippery one...but it's not enough. One drone, thrusters burning bright, spears straight downward, fingers stiffly extended. It drives into her right elbow in a shower of sparks. (-1 SP, 6 remaining, -5K, 3 remaining).

Oh, she's sneaky! Her left arm is fumbling for the inactive beamsaber dangling at her mech's hip. Another drone forms a fist and slams down on her left shoulder. The knuckle-drills spin, spin, spin, carving divots out of her armor, whirring until the arm comes loose, cables lashing like whips, their tips briefly white-hot before the endless, comforting cold of space chills them again (limb destroyed). Then, for good measure, the drone piercing her right elbow deactivates its thrusters, and another drone comes down open-palm-first on its butt. Exactly like a hammer striking a chisel, breaking clean through the Nightmare's right elbow and severing it artistically (limb destroyed).

You feel much more lucid, suddenly. You're aware of the power you're controlling, how much stronger you are than usual...and that's good. You're yourself entirely as you take the Nightmare apart. Rationally, you note that while normally you'd consider the mech rendered helpless, you remember a brave but foolish UJCIDF pilot once trying to kick you in defense of her friends after you disarmed her mech while raiding the ship she was defending with Red Siren.

...oh, the Archen is a beautiful mech...

>>
>>1665543
..Kaiser, are you.. are you waifuing? Man, they grow up so fast.
>>
Right. Well. You suppose it is. This one, though, clearly uses some of the Flowerhorn's technology. That partizan's variable beam emitters remind you of the Flowerhorn's blades, and like it it also has plasma blades in its heels. In short, you aren't done yet. Even with its shield gone, its drones dead, and both arms completely severed, it's not over until it's completely over and you've made sure Cabot is dead.

One drone hasn't gotten a chance to do anything yet, so you casually continue the stream of verbal directions, almost poetry, that you're abruptly aware you've been giving them. It's almost like you've been singing, what you're saying certainly sounds like lyrics. You even bob your head as you direct it to crush her right knee in the drone's fist (-1 SP, 6 remaining, 5K, 2 remaining), then tear it off completely (limb destroyed)

The drone that dealt the hammerblow grabs her left leg and, with her mech pinned down, bends the knee in the complete opposite direction of the way it's supposed to go, its armor not saving it at all as you snap it off like pulling a leg off a juicy, baked chicken (limb destroyed). Your last few blows are especially competent, you're getting the hang of demolishing this overengineered monstrosity now.

You flip the de-limbed Nightmare over. It's now thoroughly disarmed and you aren't giving her time to hit the eject.

'We'll be able to fly...don't fear the reaper.' Time seems so slow, all of your motions so carefully considered and precise. Snap and pop, punch and lop. Vengeance is a delicious dish when you go into it with a clear heart knowing what you want and what you'll get...which is why you have to be absolutely, one hundred percent sure that's Bethany Cabot you're . After all of her First Mate nonsense you wouldn't be surprised by some new magic trick at this point.

The drone that took her left arm and the drone that was the 'chisel' on her right elbow help flip her. They grab her chest armor, various drilling and ripping bits carving curliques of glittering alloy from the Nightmare's cuirass (-1 SP, 6 remaining, -5K, 7 remaining). They pull in opposite directions, metal tearing away as you physically rip the Nightmare apart. (-1 SP, 5 remaining, -5K, 2 remaining).

>[Automatically expend 2 Luck]

Even though her mech is as hard as a boulder...it tears like paper. You rip the Nightmare in half.

Despite comms being on, despite the fact that you can hear her breathing raggedly and gasping in muted shock, swearing under her breath, Cabot still hasn't screamed. Instead, she does just what you would logically have expected. She ejects. Her cockpit, sans its mech, is a tiny little roadstriker-size jet, fast and agile, zipping away.

Your grappling harpoon is right on her tail. Once. Twice. Three times she manages to avoid it. The fourth time, though, the hand at the end of its nanofiber filament grabs her little jet by its tailfin. It swerves back and forth, trying to fight you...but you relentlessly reel it in until you're gripping it in both hands.

'Baby I'm your man! Na, na na, na na...' You grin, and pause the track.

On impulse, you hail the Iulia Maesa, “General, I'm feeling merciful today.” You lie, “Confess. To everything. All the corruption, all the murders, all of the crimes staining your soul. Let it all out here and now for the galaxy to hear. You'll both be going to prison, but at least she'll live.”

“Fuck you Starwind, leave her out of this. Hermione, don't!” Cabot finds her voice, snarling at you.

There's silence over the comms. It stretches for one minute, then two. Then three, “Hermione? Are you out there? I...I love you.” Bethany says in a small voice, “Please, let me hear you one last time. Don't let me die alone.”

You're not an unempathetic human being. This would be tragic if it didn't involve these two particular people, but...how many have died awful, lonely deaths because of them? What right do they have to expect more from the universe than they've dished out.

“Hermione!? W-where are you? Hermione! Hermione!?” Cabot's voice becomes a sob. What her terror of you in battle couldn't do, the prospect of a lonely death without even the acknowledgment of the person she loves does. Bethany Cabot screams. She screams herself hoarse, crying and begging for the General to respond.

There isn't a single word of reply.

She's still calling out Fairchild's name when you break open the vehicle pod between your mech's fingertips and delicately lift the tiny human figure inside up to the Knuckle Kaiser's face to examine her, confirming that yes, in fact, that is the face of Bethany Cabot in the helmet. At last. It's finally time.

Is anyone else expecting Fairy to open fire on us with her ship as soon as we kill Cabot?
>>
At the end of the day, you're not Captain Beckingham, you don't want a skull on your desk. That's giving her too much of a memorial.

Just as she left you to drift in space, you release her. She floats helplessly, her voice choked as she cries and cries for a woman who won't answer. No matter how her limbs thrash, she isn't getting anywhere. You extend your palms on either side of her, activate the ripping saws in the palms, and bring them together. Slowly...but it's a quicker death than many of her victims must have had. You're ready for an end to this and, indeed, an end there is.

You feel something unwrapping from around your limbs and the sides of your helmet, and look down to see something pale, rubbery, and vine-like retreat into the holes in your seat. You can't explain the sense of warmth and contentment you have, or why it feels so separate from the businesslike satisfaction at finally closing the book on the story of Bethany Cabot.

You consider crucifying the remains of the Nightmare with its own drones' blades...but you don't. You already got what you wanted. Cassius can finally rest in peace. You return to the mechbay. Tonight you're going to try to make love to every single one of your wives in a row. You've survived vengeance and have a wedding to prepare for, after all.

...You have no idea that, on board the Iulia Maesa, General Hermione Fairchild is waking up, realizing what someone must have put in her tea, and checking the comm logs. She hadn't touched a drop of alcohol since the negotiations.

...but that, you'll find out soon enough.

Well that was over quickly. I expected something different, something more cathartic then us just shredding her while she cries for Fairchild. Maybe her screaming at us, or throwing curses as she goes out. Did she even realize what was happening?
>>
>>1665696
In 48 hours, we have kept a Paladin from her, denied her in what she assumed was her big preening moment, formed a country that likely destroyed half her plans, then joined the SSL with Martian support. Her position during the negotiations was circumvented, sealing the deal, and we called Cabot out in front of her who accepted.
Her anti Kaiser machine she likely worked hard on that was still a prototype got destroyed in quite possibly the single most one sided brawl we have seen, and Cabot was left crying her name before that hair of hers decorated the drills and grinder of our machine. This was suppose to be her crowning moment and not only did she sleep in, but it crumbled in the worst way possible.
The only way it can worse is it taking her career.. which may just happen soon.

>>1665703 applies to the entire fight.
>>
>>1665729
I want you to consider this thing, bit by bit. First off, it's MV is just like ours normally. Even ground. Next she has a SP 10 reactive shield. 10. Without our disruptor kick, we would not be able to get through it. Her blade is not only strong enough to kill our torso with it and the beam sabers, but is a +3 accuracy and a shield that we can never wear down with our fists. She's got 6 bits to our 4, with range options, a higher speed I think, and every part of her is full of weapons. If worse comes to worse, she has a road striker that can fly away with her crazy high reflexes.
They did not count for the Mandrake.
>>
>>1665706
Very nice!
>>
>>1665742
Yep, it was built to counter the Black Ogre if it didn't have its Mandrake with it.
>>
>>1665713
Wow your right that was the most one sided duel we've ever had. Even Rasheed and Mordred did better than her.
>>
>>1665742
Indeed. In fact I wonder if she kept harassing with her drones and took out some of ours (responsible for the majority of our attacks), or damaged our arms some, instead of closing this would likely have been a much closer fight. Especially with the shield not only being the perfect damage soak but negating our harpoon.
>>
>>1665745
Mind you, we would still have won. 3 hits to the torso would end the fight right there. The difference is, we didn't just destroy the nightmare, we tore it to shreds. We took their super weapon and ripped it limb from limb. We took the very pinnacle of what Fairchild's vision of SOUL was, and tore it assunder. Any support of Fairchild who watched this is going to distance themselves from her. Because if the Pirate King himself, using a personally crafted machine can take out the general's top woman in a machine likely worked on by BOTH megacorps, then they really have no hope if she pisses him off again.
If I was a senator, watching that fight, I would be thanking Jupiter and the entire pantheon that the bill did not pass.
>>
>>1665766
If we were still going to be fighting them after this they either would have to send Joe after us or bring Merrow out of retirement.
>>
>>1665754
At the beginning those Talwars jobbed to us (sorry Moe). Not a threat now but, and I'm sure wong could give us the DL, when the kaiser was just starting out they could have been a much harder fight, especially if the rest of the martian mercenaries held off our harpies instead of doing the reasonable thing and surrendering to the roarketrain.
>>
>>1665772
Wasn't really a duel though, I meant out of all the 1v1 fights with aces we've had Bethany just did the worse even though she had the second or third strongest machine we've faced.
>>
>>1665765
Which is why her stopping in melee range of Roarke was the absolute most retarded thing she could do.

What the fuck was she thinking? Even if she was attempting a weapon charge, our active shield would have denied it. She could have just moved the drones around and flanked us with missile spam. it makes no sense.

>>
>>1665779
For a women that didn't suck dick, she sure did choke.
>>
>>1665776
She likely thought she was invincible. One thing I don't think was ever properly documented, was the special nature of the starwind kick. See, the normal dive kick wouldn't be strong enough, and a weapon charge from that distance wouldn't be strong enough either. Even if we did, we would be down a move. We would have to make sure our next hits worked. Information is king after all, and she did not have those key bits.
>>
>>1665776
Eh she was a melee monster (though to a lesser extent than roarke) and was just as emotionally invested into this fight as roarke, if how the challenge was issued and accepted was any indication. It was always going to end that way. That said a bit of levelheadedness (harassing for even 1 or 2 rounds) would have done wonders. Then again keep in mind we were hiding and trying to snipe her drones with our harpoon, and it is likely a very large mental hurdle for most jovian pilots to think of drones in a cqc sense, especially what ours can do (with frankly is BS), so shee likely was trying to keep from some drone attrition on her side. Anyway Im sure Wong could give us a much better play by play. Possibly alot more correct too, especially in regards to how fairchild and cabbot view the kaiser and their playbook for it ( Wonder how different it would have been if they had just a bit more current intel).

>>1665795
Not after killing our brother.
>>
>>1665802
>Astronomical emphasis on MIGHT there.
>>
>>1665774
It wasn't a throw down the gauntlet situation, but would likely have stayed 1v2 for at least a few rounds until our mates thinned the martian numbers. I'm with you on being borderline about it, but that was the definition of one sided as I think the Talwars weren't chumps. Anyway Bethany jobbed harder, I was just comming up with a close second, for roarke's fights at least (looking at you paladin-who-got-wasted-by-a-mook, although Amos wasn't full grunt tier to be fair. Still though, damn!).
>>
>>1665807
Never will there be a more hilarious result than Amos one-shotting a paladin.
>>
>>1665807
Funny enough the only one close to as bad as this was our first fight with Cabot where our shields no sold her missiles and then we blew up one of her arms.
>>
>>1665818
Then there was the second cabot fight where we also ripped her to shreds. Not as one sided and we had help, but still. Live like a mid boss, die like a mid boss.
>>
>>1665825
She preferred the name "The Dark Adonis" I hear.
>>
>>1665776
Others have summed up many of the key points, but it's hard to get behind someone in a pit with their back to a wall, her missile drones were still flanking you and BY NUMBERS she was AT LEAST your equal if not superior in melee.
>>
>>1666098
So, will you be doing crowd reactions?
>>
>>1666117
Oh this is one thing I cannot live without, there definitely needs to be many posts dedicated to this. It would be especially funny to see the jovian (and martian) reaction, as they likely knew the specs and were worried about the possibility of this whole alliance falling to shambles if dude McCool perished. "I worry for our future, things are looking bleak for Starwind. Cabot's machine is fine tuned to slay the black ogre and- holy shit did that just happen! Fukken hell!" Also the reaction of our fellow pirates, the avalonians, and other parties would be gold. Oh and Oda and Flint, gotta have their piece especially.
>>
>>1666160

"Colonel Luxol? The computers going crazy... It can't seem to decided if the Knuckle Kaiser IS the kaiser or... a paladin..."
>>
>>1666160
Depends. Those who've interacted with Cabot or Fairchild in any meaningful way probably think it's a good kill and want to buy Roarke a beer.

Those who don't just saw a sobbing, helpless beauty get slowly grinded by a monstrous mech piloted by some crazy pirate.

All of them are probably thinking it's a bad idea to fuck with Roarke though.
>>
>>1666098
Well, this seems like the best time for that 19 to finally become a 20.Bloody hell, always figured she was at our level, but to have 20s herself is mighty spooky. Didn't help her at all, but still!
>>1666160
I think a picture of those cheering couch guys would suit our captains and crew. I also figure Miles was taking bets with Fairchild's people to see who'd win. In either case, Cabot was not a good person and saying you are using the weapon stolen from the brother you killed will not do her any favors if people were watching.
>>
>>1666196
Our belters were in the know, and even the avalonians present likely knew the reason for the duel (if they cared about a gasknight being demolished in the first place). As for the wider public, I have a feeling, both because of how heinous bethany's actions were (It'd be almost impossible to run the story without the reasons and accusations we made against her and fairchild being front page, terrible idea for war moral) and how eager they are to present a united SSL narrative, that this whole thing will be swept up under the rug. This was an immensely personal moment for Roarke too so I bet even our usual tv/streaming crew hasn't released this yet (took the footage for internal consumption? Definitely). Speaking of which fairchild reaction will be interesting. At the moment Roarke is almost out of reach, between treaties signed and her crew being unlikely to follow blatantly unlawful and suicidal orders with all the eyes (their superiors over fairchild included) and guns looking at them. Still possible she might try something, but while she hates roarke for what went down no doubt she also hates (if not more in the immediate moment) a certain pink haired niece, and she is much more in reach. However said niece is likely prepared for that too, so things should be interesting.
>>
>>1666214
Fairchild's options do not look good. She has no causi belli at all.The duel was sanctioned and 24 hours passed as was asked. We are her ally in the war, and attacking us would destroy her legacy along with any senator backing her. Of course, she just lost her best ace as well when it comes to sneaky bullshit. so if she decides to do nothing, her power is cut in twain. War marshal seems like it will never happen for her now since her actions ended up hurting the war effort for Jupiter. Even SOUL may be lost to her since her big fancy machines have done absolutely nothing against the pirates she keeps throwing them at except make them stronger.
So her options are pretty basic; Do nothing. Admit defeat, take what scraps she can and simply throw herself into the war, hoping she doesn't fuck up. The other option is likely to try and kill us during our wedding, blow up the colony, and become a known terrorist/traitor because she just attacked a allied nation with friendlies, the president's sons, and the Mars Caliph on it.
>>
>>1666235
The second option seems more likely.
>>
>>1666235
Yup, were just out of reach unless she's literally willing to throw it all away, and convince anyone to follow her in suicide (Fire at the station! Uhh how about no?). That said I'm interested in what she does, especially regarding her niece. And she may try some form of revenge later, but given the circumstances I wouldn't be surprised, between grief and being cut off from the negotiation table, if right now she just up and left.
>>
>>1666253
>>1666250
Now.. wouldn't it be a kick in the head if she went to avalon on the promise that her lover could be revived?
>>
>>1666259
as much as i would love for it to happen and for us to end up fighting a greenman controlled Fairchild, i don't think her murderboner for us is bigger than her murderboner for the greenman.
>>
>>1666265
You say that, but think of Ol' Beck. Had killed plenty of greenmen then went rogue after losing the woman he loved. Beck seemed a lot stronger than fairchild and the fact she now has no one makes it even worse.
>>
>>1666278
MUST you give Wong ideas?
>>
>>1666318
It's not much of one and to be honest, would Fairchild get as much help as Beck did even if she did? She is no hero, and while Ace class, I do not see her making much use of a bio core. Because if it were just a case of emotions, then Lucas Ford, Lori, and Tabitha would likely have gotten their paladins to activate.
>>
>>1666117
I can tell you Clemmy ruined a pair of pants and flooded at least part of where she was standing.
>>
>>1666359
Auditorium's humidity rose by 3% when clemmy saw the fight.
>>
>>1666359
At that spectacle, I think all of wives would be a bit wet. After all, each has in some way hated the hell out of Cabot.
Fatima got controlled by green skull tech.. which was likely from her.
Sammy would be mad at what she did to SOUL.
Clemmy wouldn't like her for what she does to Fairchild.
Red and Karen wouldn't like her for what she did to the belt and people close to them.
And Lori would likely take offense to the whole 'gonna torture you like it was the salem witch trials all over again'.
Then you have the various tourney members who either have a grudge with her, fairchild, or both, Mako, Wyatt, and Maxwell for the whole 'skewer Mako to a wall' thing, plus any of the green skull kids who know her as the first mate because I bet she did something to them.
>>
>>1666387
Only Clemmy really gets turned on by violence.
>>
>>1666478
Normally, I would agree, but this is a different sort of situation. Even if violence does nothing, the justice would. Karen's machine and hard work trumped the best tech her grampa's old company could do with SOUL funding. Sammy would find joy that Fairchild's vision of SOUL has been proven worse than Stern's and justice was done. Red Siren would love the publicity because once more the Kaiser continues it's reign as king of the belt.
There is plenty to like about the fight, not just the justice of it, but most of all, Roarke is coming back with just a single scratch on the kaiser after closing the book on a dark part of his life.
>>
>>1666478
Don't forget that CCC was one of Clemmy's few friends and that bitch murdered him
>>
>>1666562
I wonder if CCC had any romantic partners and possible kids.
>>
>>1665706

>>
>>1665711

Cabot? Yes. Despite everything else, she was never a coward. A monster who enjoyed hurting people weaker than she was, yes. Arrogant, yes. Willing to do anything for the sake of ambition, yes...but not a coward. Cursing at you has never worked, and screaming would only give you satisfaction, so she focused on the only thing that would make her happy in the moment.

>>1665715

She likely realized as soon as you removed her mech's head, but...you didn't give her much time to react. As for what she was thinking, I clarify that a few lines above.

>>1665742

This. People are forgetting that in a lot of mecha fights how close it was isn't reckoned by how damaged the winning mech is, but by how easily it could have been destroyed. Between missile crits and her sheer damage potential (the foot sabers are linked to whatever weapon she's wielding in her hands, whether the beam partizan or spare beam saber) she could have had a lucky round and eviscerated the Black Ogre even if she lost her head.
>>
>>1667176
>(the foot sabers are linked to whatever weapon she's wielding in her hands
Didnt know you could link to different weapons. Thought they had to be the same.
>>
>>1666117

The answer might disappoint you, but...no. For one thing, it's masturbatory, the whole "wow he's so powerful" Dragonball-esque scene with everyone's jaws agape. Secondly, you know better than most people what bad news Bethany Cabot was, and the same goes for her machine...and your legend far eclipses hers. As much as we all know how significant what you did is, a bystander might just shrug and go "some no-name Major can't beat Roarke Starwind in the Black Ogre no matter how new her mech is." Kings don't need their backs patted, the people who really know mecha and know the people involved know how important what you did is, and they're more the type for quiet acknowledgment than praise.

You definitely gained points with Joe and Hakim, though.

As for Clemmy, her reaction is scarcely blue-board appropriate.
>>
>>1667210
>You definitely gained points with Joe and Hakim, though.

Huh, and here I thought Stern would have been off-put by how brutally we killed Cabot. Quick, yes, but we still shredded her to bits using giant sawblades.
>>
>>1667222
The dude is a war hero. In this setting that probably means he has seen and done some shit a lot worse than mulching somebody.
>>
>>1667222
Probably by how quick we finished her.
>>
>>1667229
I know, but given his usual demeanor towards people wanting revenge, I figured he would have rather seen her killed in her cockpit.
>>
>>1666338
> Because if it were just a case of emotions, then Lucas Ford, Lori, and Tabitha would likely have gotten their paladins to activate.

Yes and no.
>>
>>1667210
Basically all the pilots from the tournament who were still on the colony who saw the fight didn't even look surprised at the outcome, if anything a little disappointed she didn't put up more of a fight
>>
>>1667210
In a way, thats better than what I expected. Cabot died publicly as a fool wasting a perfectly good machine. Still, it would certainly make Fairchild's soldiers think twice if they are ordered to face him.
>>
>>1665667
Holy fuckin shitballs that was awesome! Good fucking riddance.
>>
>>1667261
That reminds me, who all is still around and what are they up to?
>>
>>1667210
Mmm. We knew Cabot as a monster, Fairchild's murder and torture machine, and the First Mate of the Green Skulls. Everyone else knew her as some random Major we have a grudge against for some reason.

Literally, the only reason anyone knows about her at all... is because of her association to us. Huh. How you like that, Cabot? History will remember you as nothing more than a road bump in our story. Personally, I feel that might be a greater form of revenge than shredding her.
>>
>>1665667
Between Black Company with Kid dying, and ValenQuest being itself this has been a super emotionally draining board lately.
>>
>>1667568
Did Black Company Quest's QM ever change character wounding/death being 100% RNG?
>>
>>1667578
Just from a quick glance it seems like a setting where it would be pretty lethal
>>
>>1667785
Yeah, but RNG you can't influence in any way with IIRC a 20% chance of crippling a character and another 20% of them outright dying is a terrible game mechanic no matter how lethal the setting.
>>
>>1667813
Thats what you get for playing a game of dice
>>
>>1667813
There actually are abilities to influence how many people get only-wounded to a limited extent. And the character died because anons chose to go for victory instead of saving him.
>>
>>1667835
You at least have bonuses in other systems. It was just a flat d10 for what happened when they were wounded. It made the system thematic, but it also made character death mean very little because the players had no agency over it. I guess some people would like that, but it's not my cup of tea.

>>1667839
If that's the case I might pick it up again.

Hey Wong, what would Cassius have thought of this whole situation?

In fact, what would he have thought of everything Roarke pulled off since the beginning of the quest?

It's hard to say because Roarke was an angry young teenager when he skipped home to find work on California Station, got a reputation for beating up grown men on the underground fighting circuit, and met Captain Jeremiah Ozark. Cassius from what you've seen never really approved but never really blamed you. Ultimately, Roarke lived his own life, and while he can speculate about what his family would have thought, he's spent his whole life living as his own man in his own way.

Alexander Starwind would have approved of Samantha the most and Red Siren the least.

Who would Cassius have liked best and least?
>>
So guys With us becoming a nation and the pirate crews becoming our military arm.
Are the pirate crews Military units now?
>>
>>1668647

Down the line.

Samantha's parents don't really keep in touch and were quietly horrified when she was taken captive, had mixed feelings about her marriage announcement on JNN ("Well, there goes a promising military career..." "At least she DID get married, what with her difficulties and all..."), and will be extremely relieved to hear about the declaration of independence because it means their daughter is a Queen and their son is NOT a traitor but just switched loyalties to stay with his sister. They view the polygamy as part of your image as a pirate king, exotic and barbaric.

Karen's most probable father was great at many things, but he was an awful dad in some ways because he treated her like a very small member of the crew and didn't know how to deal with her after her mom's death. He grieved over it, but...death happens when you're a space pirate, he was used to it and could move on, but had no idea how to transfer that to a little girl who had just lost her mother. So he stepped back, and Cornelius Cohen, Karen's grandpa, stepped in. Captain Ozark did subtly push you to take care of Karen when she tagged along after you, though, you getting married to her is fulfilling one of his fondest wishes and he wouldn't begrudge the polygamy.

Clemmy is an army brat. Like you, she's an orphan, her parents died when she was a baby. She had a brother who was significantly older than her who died while she was still young, so she didn't really have anyone but herself during her time at the Academy and threw herself wholly into military service.

Red Siren's father took to drinking and abandoned the family, thinking that Rosita was the result of an affair. Red Siren's mother has a load of personality problems and no ability to handle money, and despite having a good heart and being an artistic free spirit her second husband, the one whose last name Irina uses, is keeping her far away from Roarke because he's afraid she'll try to get money out of the marriage and that would be terribly embarrassing.

Fatima's parents are dead, as you know.

Loriette's parents are also dead.
>>
>>1668182
Isn't Mika a huge cunt?
>>
>>1668679

She's also subtle, collected, and extremely loyal.

>>1668729

Not Loriette. His experiences with the Green Men probably would have made him a tiny bit glad to see one of their worshipers recovering, he wasn't able to save many of them and it's part of why he lost his faith. Red Siren, on the other hand, plays S-Pop, which he despises, and her particular personality flaws would grate on him.

>>1668772

Cassius is on record as supporting Clemmy as the perfect girl for Roarke. He wouldn't have a least favorite, besides maybe disliking Fatima's haughtiness and worrying a little that she's making you put on airs.

You don't entirely remember landing the Knuckle Kaiser. The one thing that sticks in your mind is of a fading white glow lacing around and beneath the circuitry, reflected in the polished metal as you enter the mechbay once more. Your four drones latch onto the frame attached to your shoulders, nanofiber threads shooting from their forearms to connect into the form of an overhanging cape. It looks a bit short, still, but more drones will improve that.

You don't remember getting out, either. You must have rode the liftwire down, but you don't remember that. It feels almost like you just...stepped out of your mech and were on the floor. You remove your pilot suit and helmet, hang them up and fix the collar of your black, leather jacket with aplomb.

People are staring at you. Some with fear, some with admiration, but nobody wants to get too close right now. You don't blame them. The crowd of onlookers parts as you walk through, the way the Bluegills and Harpies on the Rhinehawk move aside when you go to launch from your ship. It feels as if it's been a long time since you last fought in a mech, you were seriously missing that feeling.

Someone else steps out from the crowd, a dignified man with an artificial leg and a sword in his cane. A straight-backed, middle-aged gentleman with greying hair. “Are you satisfied?” He asks. Three small words, taut with meaning. There are several ways to take them.

You look up at the Knuckle Kaiser. Its palms are stained with frozen blood and bits of fabric, and you don't envy the techs who will have to scrub bone and hair from amongst the grinders. “Yes.” You admit, “I am. I can move on to other things, now.”

“Almost nobody will ever know how important to you this was. I learned that myself. The Gorgons were famous in my time, but forgotten in yours. Nobody ever remembers that they once cowed even the Green Skulls, before Galbadie's fleet became as large and as...connected...as it was when you destroyed it. You will receive no fame, no adulation. The fight will not be remarkable if displayed on the holonet. Mecha enthusiasts might note the Nightmare's strength, but will also dismiss it as just another well-funded corpse in your path.” Bluegill Joe's gaze is calm and impassive.

You nod, waiting for him to finish.

“What you did to her was brutal.” He says, plainly.

“What she did to my brother was brutal. What she did to countless other people was brutal.” You reply.

This time, he nods, and waits, clearly expecting you to say more.

“That isn't why I did it. I have more than enough enemies, and I want them to know that if any more of them try to hurt the people I protect, they won't get a quick or merciful death. No matter how mature or righteous a quick ending makes me look. That kind of behavior isn't personal honor, it's selfishness.” You smile crookedly, “What? Do you think dad would have disapproved?”

He shakes his shaggy-haired head, “Not in the slightest. You very much resemble your mother, you know, but I see more and more of your father in you as you grow up. Speaking of selfishness...” He smiles back, “Meet me tonight, on the colony hull. I'll send you the coordinates. It's time I stretched my old bones a little.”

You feel something vaguely cold slither down your spine, a sense of uneasiness, but pride grabs you by the chin and makes your head nod, “I'll be there.”

He claps you on the shoulder and nods once, before moving away through the crowd. People part before you like in the Christian tale of the prophet dividing the sea, yet as you break from the ranks of flesh you notice that you've acquired a pink-haired shadow in white, her head downcast. You ignore her and keep walking. She follows you, silent as a little pink mouse, about two and a half steps behind you. You continue to walk, expecting her to leave. She continues to tail you, uncharacteristically downcast.

[Continued]
>>
Finally, outside the bay and out in the city once again, you pause and wait for her. She makes eye contact, and stops walking. You raise one eyebrow and wait for her to speak.

“I'm not going back.” She says quietly, “I can't, right now.”

“Why not?” You're not sure what she means, she's been staying with Red Siren, rather than on the ship.

She bows her head slightly, “Because it's my fault Major Cabot is dead.”

You regard her in stunned silence for a moment, “No, it isn't. Listen, whatever stupid, abusive guilt trip your aunt has laid on you, those two made this bed for themselves when they started playing cheap games with people's lives. You have your fair share of flaws, true, you can get on my nerves sometimes and I don't really believe that whole innocent pink princess thing is your real personality...and stop pouting, I've been pouted at by Rosita and she's a professional...oh, and your boyfriend really irritates me. Also what happened to Naomi Heim is in some ways your fault. Despite that, only a small handful of people can be blamed for that bitch getting what she got, and I'm proud to put my name at the top of that list. Now stop shaking your head like that, the whole I-know-more-than-you expression is just...smug.”

She smiles ruefully, “Guilty again. You're right. I...I'm not exactly innocent and maybe, maybe the person I've tried so hard to be is just my own happy fantasy to escape the reality of why I exist and what I'm capable of. In your own way, I understand that you're trying to be nice, but you're wrong. This is my fault.” She looks up at you, “Bethany Cabot was never supposed to fight you. My aunt forbade it.”

You adjust your sunglasses, “Really.” It isn't a question. You're not surprised at all, “So, she tried to cheat.” That isn't a question either.

Lysa Fleur nods, “I had bad timing, I came back to the Iulia Maesa to try and patch things up with her right after you apparently challenged the Major. I...knew I'd been playing hooky, sort of, she didn't want me doing this concert and was furious at me for letting myself be 'kidnapped' and her house being vandalized and...and all of that. She wasn't exactly listening to me. She had Cabot locked in her room and put under guard, but her plan was insane. It would have absolutely destroyed the credibility of SOUL and the Jovian position in this important alliance!” She clasps her hands together, slim fingers twisting back and forth.

“Go on?” You cross your arms, your expression impassive.

[Continued]

Lysa's expression is somewhere between a frown and a pout, “I just need to get this off my chest, alright? If you try to use this as evidence against her, I'll deny it! She's still my aunt!” She shakes her head, “As I said, she wasn't making any sense. She was ranting and destroying furniture and screaming at the troops and...and it was dreadfully embarrassing. First, I think she planned on fighting you herself, for the Major's sake, but that was just because she was so angry at you! Then she became calm, but even less rational. She welcomed me back, was almost sweet, but she kept...hinting that I should fight you in Cabot's place. Oh, she never said it outright, I pointed out that I didn't stand a chance against you very quickly and she dropped it, but she said that was fine. She had another ace pilot ready and waiting...and then she took out this...thing. A sort of silver headband. It wasn't very pretty at all, I didn't understand what it was for. Until she told me.” Her eyes can't maintain contact, large and haunted, “She told me what it was used for. She said it had been intended for Naomi. She said if it worked on an ace as strong-willed...that wasn't the word she used, but I'm being polite...as Lady Fatima, it would work on her Paladin.” She shivers, “I hadn't known about what she was doing, I swear. She's been torturing that poor woman. Torturing her, hurting her, but not doing anything that would make her incapable of piloting. No permanent damage. It was all so cold and clinical.” She bites the tips of her fingers, shivering. It's clear she's trying to control what must be a very unpleasant memory.

“I know what those headbands do. If you agree to repeat your story to the authorities...” You start. The irony of YOU telling someone to go snitch to the UJCIDF is deliciously thick.

She shakes her head instantly, “No! She's my aunt! Even if she's horrible, she took care of us when we had nobody else! I can't condemn her to death now! I just can't!” Her eyes are damp, “I just couldn't do it, I couldn't let her. Every sentiment aside...there's no way you would have been fooled. The Major killed your brother, and you're too thorough and cunning not to check for a trick. An opaque helmet mask wouldn't have fooled you. When she stayed silent, you would have exposed the trick in front of everyone. My aunt's career would have been over. She would have been arrested, that...that thing she wanted to use is a heavy crime in and of itself, using a Paladin as a weapon against her enemies would have been even worse. SOUL's reputation would have been permanently shattered, we might have even been disbanded, poor Colonel Stern would be shamed for serving under her, and the very pride of Jupiter would have an ugly black mark for ever allowing this to happen."

[Continued]
>>
She shakes her head violently, “She wasn't being rational! The Major wanted to fight you, as she agreed, everyone expected it...I couldn't let this cowardly trick come to fruition, so...so I...I made my aunt some tea, I told her I'd help, we could talk out the details. She trusted me.” She sniffles, “I...I always carry a few sleep-syringes. Every so often in my line of work, you meet someone who gets obsessive and a little too close. Their passion overwhelms the size of their hearts, and they do foolish things they would regret with some clarity, foolish things like...try to kidnap me, for instance, or a murder-suicide. I'm quite good at self-defense, of course, so one quick jab and a call to the local CDF and they can get the help they need. Rosita says I should just shoot them, but I hope she was joking.”

You know for a fact Rosita isn't joking. Red Siren is a rose with sharp thorns.

Lysa smiles tremulously, “So I emptied one out into my aunt's teacup while she was checking the security cams, tucked her into bed when she slumped after a sip or two, and then...” Her cheeks redden slightly, but she stiffens her backbone and makes a fist, eyes shining with determination, “And then I did just what I thought you would do! I beat up all of the guards and bridge crew by myself...at least the ones who wouldn't listen to reason...and broke Major Cabot out to face you with honor!”

Oh, so that's why General Fairchild and her staff didn't respond to your hails. You feel a conflicting mix of emotions, sort of wincing but at the same time perversely gleeful. You never claimed to be a perfect person, it's okay to derive a quantum of joy from Fairchild's suffering after all she's done, “All by yourself?” You question.

“I practice a lot!” She proudly proclaims, “Besides, defending against a meteor hammer isn't something they teach at the Academy, that's why I picked it up. Also, I think they believed they could just grab me, they weren't willing to shoot me without orders and I had enough armor to keep tranq darts away from my skin.”

You look behind you, “...What about those four?”

“Oh, they helped a little. Not too much, though, I was in rather a bad mood at the situation I was in and wanted to work off some steam.” She airily waves it off, “I mean, without darling's gunplay I might have been in some trouble, but...well...I am a SOUL pilot, after all!”

“I'm a little bit amazed.” You continue looking back at the four figures in UJCIDF body armor you'd taken for guards escorting the Major, with the SOUL logo on their shoulder, “For once, you went straight to violence. No dialogue, no understanding.”

She smiles sadly, “This was the only dialogue you two could have. You were like tectonic plates, no matter how right or wrong the forces pushing you together were only a terrifying earthquake could be the result. Sometimes, life is messy.”

You pause, remembering something she once said, “Lysa, tell the truth. Nobody else will hear it. You hated her, didn't you? You called her a weed in the garden of mankind. You said she was corrupting your aunt.”

She laughs softly, without any humor in it, “I...yes. Thank you, your majesty. I shouldn't lie to myself. I wanted her to die. Like I said, it was my fault she's dead, and that's why I can't go back. I murdered her, even if I never touched her. Do you think I'll go to hell for this?” She questions sadly.

You shake your head, “I wouldn't know, but I don't think so. No religion or culture that refuses to strike back against the wicked survives for long. I'm the wrong person to ask, though. Find McAllister and confess to him, that's a Christian thing, isn't it?”

She nods. Her four followers are on the verge of catching up...but one isn't stopping. Instead, she speeds up, “Murderer! You killed her! Why did you have to-”

You catch her leg midway through her flying kick and effortlessly whip her around, stuffing her headfirst into a conveniently-nearby hedge and walking past her kicking feet.

“That was vengeful murder, not justice!” Yep, the one with the rifle slung over his shoulder is clearly Keith. Just out of principle you grab him and stuff him into the hedge too.

“Wow, you're strong.” One of the others comments, “So do you pick up other boys much? I heard Samantha Blanchett is-hey! Put me down!” You stuff that one into the hedge with the others.

Lysa gives you a disappointed look. The last one skids to a stop, removes her helmet, and bounces right into a salute, “Lara Fleur, UJCIDF SOUL! It's a pleasure to meet you, Admiral Starwind...”

“King!” Lysa hisses.

“KING Starwind...err, Lysa, kings use their first name, so he's King Roarke. Anyway, um, please don't grapple me.” Her smile is as wholesome as fresh milk.

You give her a thumbs-up. “If you girls want to stay with Rosita until your aunt is feeling less murderous, I don't mind so long as you don't do anything stupid. Keith too, just tell him not to aggravate her, or she'll think of some suitably awful revenge. I have places I need to be.” You turn and leave while Lysa and Lara are getting the others out of the shrubbery.

man, i kinda want to have lysa not be with her aunt, maby get her into a group of our soldiers as they loot and pillage avalon? that would be cool. honostly i just like her to much to let her hang with her aunt.
>>
>>1670046
You do realize she's also a monster wearing pink hair, right? Roarke doesn't know how bad she is, but we reasonable folk know. Not being meta is hard, man.
>>
>>1670081
no one desurves to live next to queen bitch my friend, even if she IS secretly a monster worse then cabbot.
>>
>>1670094
This whole thing is a trick. She isn't sad or upset about what she did. She's just as bad as Fairchild, she's just more subtle.
>>
>>1670094
So you would rather a dangerous girl live near us that is willing to do anything to save her aunt when we're actively planning on killing her?
>>
>>1669971
And while the continue waits, time for a in depth thought on the situation. Stern is gonna fight us, that much is obvious, but it's the revelations here that get me.
First off? Fairchild really DID go off the deep end. Using a Paladin as a back up with a Green Skull circlet is quite possibly the dumbest thing she could do for everyone. Not only is it a dark thing, but it also proves that Fairchild has used and WILL use those circlets. Proves she had connections with the Green skulls, and proves she took part in Rashad's plan. Lysa in this instance, is right. This action would have destroyed SOUL, soured relationships with Mars and the belt, cost them a Paladin alongside the machine, and destroy Morale like a 20 kill weapon to a super light torso with no armor.
So.. yeah. Not a fan of the pinks, but Lysa did make the right call.
>>1670098
I don't think Fairchild will allow herself to be saved as she is now. I'm not even sure if she can properly express herself. We know what she almost did, and she got betrayed and lost her love. Sure it's because her 'kid' wanted to save her(and get revenge on the side), but still. Depending on when we meet her, we might not even need to kill her. No point in doing it if she's already dead inside and won't do anything.
>>
>>1670122
What I'm saying is that Lysa wants to keep her aunt from dying and Roarke REALLY wants to kill her too so she might think it best to get rid of us which is why I don't want her on Auditorium too long.
>>
sooooooooo TIME FOR EMPIRE BUILDING!

i dont know witch one though.
>>
>>1670131
Ehh, don't think we need to kill her. At this point, letting her live is far worse. Sure she could plan, but it'd be pointless. We killed Cabot. We have backing. We destroyed her newest weapon. We know what she had planned. She can't trust anyone and her actions are giving her more and more scrutiny. Could she try to attack us? Sure, but who would follow her? SOUL? They hate her and see the writing on the wall. Mercs? Don't think there is enough money in it for them. Maybe attacking the colony and trying to blow it up? That would surely end badly for her.
No Thunderbird, for all her plans, all her mechanization, and shit she's done, I think she is just about done. We got what we wanted and leaving her alive, broken utterly, and unable to do anything is by far worse than any death we can give her.
>>

>>
>>1670164
we invaded fucking mars for ours.
>>
>>1670160
I'm just saying, an idiot in a cafe can change the world through sheer happenstance. Nothing is stopping her from getting lucky. It's always better to kill your actual enemies. She's got a grudge she'll never let go. She has to die eventually. And if she thinks she can't target us she'll target those close to us. There's plenty of ways to hurt us that don't implicate her, still. And there will always be stupid people willing to do it.
>>
>>1670174
Oh I agree with caution, especially with her, but the question is if she is even capable of it. Some trauma you just can't recover from and worrying about her making plans becomes a non issue if she simply.. can't. That's why I said wait.
Sides, I don't think Roarke would be her first target. Not right now. If anything, I think it would be Lysa and SOUL B. After all, we did what was to be expected, but Lysa? Lysa betrayed her and for many, you kill the traitor before the enemy.
>>
>>1670197
I just want to avoid a situation where she's totally broken and decides she's just going to blow herself up with every one of us she can. There's a certain level of broken you want people at, too broke and too angry and sudden suicide is viable in her head, you feel me? Crazy people make crazy decisions. I'm personally not worried about Lysa, she can take care of herself, and she's really not our problem in the first place. I'd be worried about Keith. Because he's stupid. And if Fairchild wants total revenge she'll go for the boy lysa loves first.

>That isn't why I did it. I have more than enough enemies, and I want them to know that if any more of them try to hurt the people I protect, they won't get a quick or merciful death
You should have gone into more detail with that. Was it slow enough for her to actually feel it, or was it over quickly.

>>1669946
>Oh, so that's why General Fairchild and her staff didn't respond to your hails. You feel a conflicting mix of emotions, sort of wincing but at the same time perversely gleeful. You never claimed to be a perfect person, it's okay to derive a quantum of joy from Fairchild's suffering after all she's done, “All by yourself?” You question.
We definitely need to rub it in her face next time we see her. Maybe it's a little sadistic, but go into detail about how much pain and despair Cabot was in and how satisfying it was to grind her up the next time we see Faichild. Maybe even ask her if she has any other loved ones for Roarke to kill just to throw extra salt on it. Roarke may be the good guy, but that doesn't make him nice.
>>
>>1670219
Hence why we should likely see her. Not out of gloating, but to see her state. If she goes full on 'late era brittany spears', shaved head and all, I think she's done.
>>1670222
No, because that gives Cabot too much credit. Don't mention Cabot, don't use her as a means to prod, because in the end, she's gone. Her plans are gone. And if she tries it again, the results will be the same. If she tries to go for our loved ones, the result will be the same. In the end, the thing that will sting the most is the fact that her own actions damned her.
>>
>>1670160
we are already a nation. if she tries some shady shit again, we could request her arrest, or outright capture her if she is close enough to us. Then we just leave her to rot in some prison cell.
>>
so did we get the whole of the astoriod belt then? all of it? cool.
>>
>>1670313
We claimed the Belt. For now Phaeton includes the Auditorium, 16-Psyche, Suleiman Colonies, and all of the former Mars colonies. California and the Jovian Colonies are presumably still haven't signed on yet.
>>
>>1670313
Not exactly. We've got a bunch of colonies from Mars and recognition. With that, Psyche, Auditorium, and Fatima's Colonies, we have a strong base to start with. The fact we are a member of the SSL means that joining Phaeton isn't a horrible thing to do so fence sitters might join us to avoid some of the taxes for being foreign. We will likely have to deal with King's areas though, along with any pretenders or challengers.

You walk through the town. Sure, there could be assassins. Meridian is out there, somewhere, and it wouldn't surprise you at all if he was watching you right now. You walk and walk, right out into the outskirts of town, along the lake.

You walk into the woods. Not towards the Undefeated's cabin. Right now, even he would be a distraction. You go straight for a place you've seen in your mind's eye on the battlefield and even in your dreams.

The boulder looms before you, huge and smooth and white, like some misshapen pearl. It resembles some great, dull tooth growing out of the colony itself, its roots latched deep into the hull. Realistically you know this colony probably hasn't even been here for a century, despite being an older one, but the boulder itself looks ancient and immortal.

You take your fighting stance. You draw back your hand, palm open. Your mind is clear, the detritus of rage and loss may have left scars on the riverbed of your soul, but the blockage is gone now, and what flows through your spirit moves clear and faster than ever. The motion feels relaxed, almost gentle, as you strike the stone with the palm of your hand.

A crack traverses its surface, then another, and another. Alerted by the sound, birds take flight, their chattering filling the air as the cracks spiderweb their way across the boulder. You aren't even surprised as it crumbles to dust.

>[You have gained the Void Fist ability, and can now convert Luck into Kills of damage, you can use more than your total Luck points but any Luck spent on this technique beyond your maximum will deal damage to you as well]

Your palm doesn't even sting. Your feet seem to know exactly where to place themselves as you move through the woods, following the trail you took on your first trip here. Soon enough, pine needles are crunching between your feet, and you see Domon's eyes glittering in the underbrush. He growls a greeting to you, and stretches, the end of a raccoon's tail dangling between his fangs as he emerges from the bushes and pads over to you, butting his trash-can-lid sized face against your leg and demanding pets. You scratch him behind the ears, and he follows you. The Undefeated opens the door before you even knock, looking you over. White dust covers your front, coating your hand.

“So.” He says quietly, “You finally took your life in your own hands.” He opens the door, “Come inside, it's time to begin the final phase of your training.”
>>
>>1670510
Does it convert to Kills even if you're not using mecha or weapons that would otherwise do Kills of damage and not the smaller kind of damage I can't remember the name of used for human-sized targets? So, say Roarke using his bare hands, could he deal Kills with them?

>>
Big question guys Now that we are a nation, There were talks about telling the two Megacorps to Fuck off and not come back are we still doing that and if so HOW are we doing it?
>>
>>1672803
Well, the biggest way is simply by taxing them for not being a local business, but the second would be simply merchandising and promoting our machines. Shouldn't be too hard when you got footage of stuff like the Lightning, Jaeger, and Dutchman pulling off crazy stunts.
>>
>>1672803
Taxes and fees for mining and operating in the belt, especially since they are jovian concerns and will need to pay taxes for operating in another sovereign nation.

It'll probably come up in the treaty negotiations that facilities operating in the belt will be nationalised by our burgeoning nation. How it will occur and how long they have to either evacuate or pay the appropriate taxes will have to be negotiated out but thats probably how it'll go.
