/qst/ - Quests

Last time on Document ARTEMIS. You, Deltorian Tessan, found yourself with a malfunctioning eye. After pulling off a spectacular stunt on your way to the Department HQ, you quickly found Melissa 'Omni 'Thorne, one of the few Specialist operatives to try and fix it. It ended with you preparing for cybernetics surgery.

The sound of your boots crunching on the snow is the only sound you can hear, besides your slow and staggered breathing. As the health warning message flashes for the umpteenth time in your helmet, your hand tightens around the gaping wound in your gut. As you finish the desperate plea for help again, your legs finally give out and you collapse into the snow. As you take another breath, your eyes close and your head droops.

With a start, you wake up to find yourself in the Department 7 medical centre. The slick black cybernetic arm and small metal panel on the back of your neck reminded you and centres you back in the present. As you run your fingers over the two small slots in the metal panel, the feeling of the lower one being empty concerned your for a bit before you realised that the chip you are looking for is on the table next to you, alongside a note.

Looking around the room, you find your coat, and your holstered revolver. Putting them on and taking the note, you...

(A) Look at that note.
(B) Try to remember your "dream"
(C) Forget about it, read the note later. Time to meet new people.

You have had these dreams a lot recently. Compounding with a really annoying sister and a somewhat menial job, it was enough to forget about. As for the note that Melissa wrote, well... Seeing as she is not here and your eye is working, you think you know what is in it.

Carefully slotting the chip in, wearing your coat and attaching your holster, you realise that the HUD design in your head had changed. Angel's corner of your vision was now taken up by a white haired Angelic figure and the corner that Daemon hid in was now a satanic symbol of some kind. Of course when you finally noticed, Angel's new face finally gave up on the angelic pose she had been holding since you woke up. "Finally. Too you long enough. As you saw, we got and update! Woo! I have a face, and a sort of body. Anyway, your locator chips in your cybernetics were playing up."

Continuing on, trying to ignore the annoyance of Angel, a phone icon appears in your vision. Before you can check out who it is, it immediately connects, leaving you face to face with a blonde woman, biting her lip in some kind of anticipation. As your eyes connect with her's, the feeling of dread courses through you. As she smiles, you, Angel and Daemon all curse in your head. This was that clingy secretary you haven't gotten rid of since you saved her three years ago. Her name is Angela.

"Del? Yes, it worked... Oh... Thought you could get away from me! ;P so good to talk to see you again..." As she begins rambling about how she finally found you, Angel and Daemon begin scream solutions to this horrible problem in your face.

What do you do?

(A) End call, block number, and escape change your phone number.
(B) "Hey Angela... I'm currently busy... Could you call back later?"
(C) "How the hell did you do it? This is the fourth number!"

Sorry for the wait. Had stuff to do.

Taking one look at Angela told you everything you needed to do. Almost as soon as the call started, you ended the video call. However, as you change your number, another call comes through. Almost as soon as it starts ringing, it picks up, Angela smiling at you again. "Oh no you don't, cheeky. I know that trick. I won't fall for it again..."

Cries of relief from you and your AI's sound as the call ends. All thanks to Angel's amazing speed coding and the "accidental" overloading of the communication towers that the stalker had been using.

Sadly, the bad events kept coming. Almost as soon as you finished with the stalker, one of the few dreaded phrases sounded down the corridor. "It's my day off!" Life is already hard enough. You didn't want whoever was down the corridor to see you now. What do you do?

(A) Quickly run away and hope "they" don't see you.
(B) Hide and hope they don't see you.
(C) Accept your fate and face the flames.

The likely hood if actually getting away from what was coming slim to none, at best. Completely and utterly impossible if Michael was around... Or if the disaster walking towards you got hold of your apartment keys, again. Calming down the now visibly pissed off Angel, now with ruffled hair and feathered wings, you prepare for what came next.

A man wearing a bright red Hawaiian and khaki cargo shorts rounded the corner, carrying a large black case. As his eyes locked into you, you somehow found yourself right next him. "Why hello, Deltorian. Did you hear. It's my day off!" (This anons is Jeremy "Longbow" Avril, Department 7 black ops sniper.)

Knowing that you know his skeleton has been reinforced, he begins leaning on you, the seemingly thin man's heavy arm resting slightly painfully on your good shoulder. As a side comment, you mention how Siberia must have been good, but knowing Jezza and the fact that he is almost a psychopath and very much a sadist, he was probably singing about kids burning in napalm when he shot people's heads with his anti-material rifle, loaded with high velocity, armour piercing, incendiary/explosive rounds. Good thing he's on your side.

After about five minutes of Jezza explaining to you about the spray pattern that some poor sod's head made when it exploded, he finally left, heading off to find a new victim... I mean person to talk to. For obvious reasons, you quickly left the medical area and headed back into the main control area of the Department operations level.

Checking the time, the night shifts are beginning to happen. Sadly, specialists need to be on duty, most of the time. Being off duty now was probably because the world council senators were having a meeting. Probably enough time to check up on someone.

(A) Need to check if Yoko hasn't started a new stream, since she is overseeing that City sweep operation.
(B) The training area might have someone worth chatting to, if he isn't wailing on some poor rookie.
(C) The armoury. There is someone there, and it is probably a stupid idea, but why not.

Time to check on that annoying sister of yours. Despite being a money sinkhole, she has made sure you recovered from your augmentation, given you those two helpful gremlins in your head, and guided you through many missions. Also, she owes you something like £34000 for her personal computer and gaming equipment.

The lockdown was still in effect, which was annoying, but when the Department underwent renovations two or three years ago, the building planner, probably Tao, designed it so that Drake's lab wouldn't irradiate everything if his stupid reactor went off. Just most of it. That minority section were Yoko's office and the corridor to get there.

Swinging the door open, you find yourself standing at the foot of a pile of cans, bottles and cartons which once contained grape soda. The opposite wall was covered in elephant plushies and drawings. The lights were off but the bright purple pink of Yoko's computer setup glowed. Yoko sat in her gaming chair, hands over her face, probably hissing from outside light.

"Yoko, you do this to yourself every fucking time..." You say as you find the light switch. As you flick it on, the "girl" that was sitting on the chair was now staring at you from the shadows under her desk. Perfectly timed, Angel adds, "She seems ok."

After a five minute period of you trying to get your gremlin sister from out under the desk, which you do by holding her grape soda and newest elephant plushies doll hostage, you finally are able to talk normally. With her sitting in chair and you cleaning up her office, you check over her computer to see what she was doing. To no surprise, she was streaming and thanks to the magnification function in your eyes, chat is flaring up from the light, you, and the hostage taking of a bottle.

"What is it Del? As you probably can see, I'm in the middle of something." Finally finished with the bottles and moving onto the cans, you can't help but flick her a look of sheer disappointment.

What do you want to do?

(A) Let her stream. It was always running reading stream.
(B) Ask her to double check Melissa's work on your augmentation.
(C) Sit quietly and contemplate how you can stop Yoko's addiction to purple soft drinks.

As you think of checking your augments, Yoko notably rolls her eyes before moving a set of matching blue elephants from a chair. Taking a seat, you see her type something. Appearing from nowhere, a small pink 2d elephant appears in the air, before jumping into the computer screen, appearing on it's display. "Now Junior, I need you to keep the stream busy with the game while I make sure that my brother isn't going to die." As she finished, the elephant raises its trunk and starts doing something. As Yoko walks back with a cable and a small metal disc, Angel says something about how Junior was technically her and Daemon's elder, but at this point, Angel's ramblings never get productive. Especially when she is siphoning data off of Yoko's network.

With a harsh slap, Yoko sticks the disc to the top of your head, inserting the cable into the port on the back. A small spike of pain and the monitor it is hooked up to begins filling with coding. "Now Del. Could give me your arm?" After deactivating the nerve connections in your arm and disengaging the locks, you carefully pass it off. "Ah... No wonder why the locator chip messed with this thing. I knew I cut a corner somewhere when coding." She said, typing with a weird kind of grace and speed. In a matter of seconds, the typing was done, checked and installed, not without a slight electric shock.

As you get up and thank your sister, a call comes in. When it immediately connected, the dread of Angela flowed through you but when the face of the director, only known as Zero, appeared on screen, a calmness only found when one evades an ex successfully.

"I have a mission for you, Escort. Report to briefing, immediately." With that an important set of events is set in motion. Come back next time for more Document ARTEMIS.
