On the last thread, we came into existence, ran into some giants, and realized that winter is not fun. At all.

As for the results of last turn - while sorting out what foods and plants do the best in the cold is rather hard, we are gathering a decent amount of seaweed and are getting along decently with agriculture.

YEAR 11 AFTER THE ORDER

This wonderful innovation known as the longhut is like a hut, but better! Combined with the oak trees we've discovered, we've been able to safely upgrade quite a few of the houses to regular old oak houses. They're taking a central role in our building as the snow keeps falling... this winter shows no signs of stopping.

We take it upon ourselves to create some form of binding so we can match those strange enemies we met the year previous. This rope binding should hypothetically help us create weapons and tools made out of stones such as axes and spears - and lo and behold, it does! More specifically, we use plant fibers formed out of river plants such as cattails and weeds to create these bindings, which we call rope. We can also tie the animal pens closed. It's way too useful NOT to be crafted!

To quote one ghoul comedian, "kids have stopped playing with razor [sharp] teeth, and have started playing with razor blades! Razor blades, geddit?"

He was stabbed outside his hut later that afternoon with a weapon of his own making. He bled out in the snow as people laughed at his suffering. It turns out laughter is not the best medicine. That is to say, serrated blades are now a thing.

We travel by day, resting at night - the cold keeps us from doing the opposite, which is how we tend to travel during the warmer seasons. Past the ruins, but before the volcano, we come across... something. It is the 5th day of the expedition, and all of a sudden, a fog encroaches on us from beyond our field of vision. It's thick, and impossible to see through, yet we can vaguely see something cutting in front of us. Our scouts had spotted it on the horizon earlier, but we weren't aware of how large it was until now. About 4 ghouls wide by 5 ghouls tall, it is some kind of gateway constructed of gray stones not typical of this area.

One of our party approaches it, and upon touching a strange symbol on one of the pieces of stone, it begins to glow a sickly pink, before the symbols light up in a cacophony of colors. It's showing no signs of stopping.

What do you do?

The injured of the ghouls typically struggle to pull their weight as part of the tribe, particularly those who have lost or seriously damaged their limbs. However, with the recent discovery of 'rope', a single ghoul named Shabbach came up with the idea to bind a spear to his left arm, which was mangled to the point of being unusable by wild beasts several years prior. Since then, he has been searching for ways to improve upon his fleshy form.

All is silent now, including the faint hum of the portal. For a moment it is replaced by what sounds like footsteps echoing from somewhere nearby, but then it disappears.

The river has burst its banks near where you are, so you decide to head a little further inlands as you trek its course. While you've been this far before, you've never been inland in this area. Not that it's much different than anywhere else of course - the ashlands are full of sweeping dunes, and craggy mountains, and not much else. At least, that's what you thought before the second day traveling along the inland area.

The skies were clear, and before you stood an immense pillar, one of a size that before now you could only comprehend by looking at the volcano. Incredibly tall, its true height eluded your field of view, reaching up, up, and into the clouds, as if piercing what stood in its way. It seemed to be gray, but that could be the light playing tricks on you. No, perhaps you cannot even comprehend its beauty. Some of you sat down on the ground and prayed where you were. This must be a sign from something out there, that you were known, were loved. Or at least you think that. All you can say is that it stands before you as a great monument to something, by something.

What do you do? Just keep going?

As we approach the big rock, the one that we have attached to a harness almost seems to crumble. We're not quite sure what that's about, but we assume it is paying respects to its big brother. At least til Ghuzhol tells us not to, and tells us what this thing called clay is. After that he begins muttering. Something about talking rocks and the volcano, no one is quite sure.

Upon closer inspection, the pillar seems to have symbols carved into it, none we could understand. Near the base, we see that same letter that the giants called themselves by - the M. Ehwaz. Other than that, it just seems like a giant rock. Some argue over the meaning of this, but one thing's clear - this massive landform dominates all others we've seen around here.

We mean to continue moving onwards, but when we attempt to leave the pillar, we can't. It seems that a small river, more than a stream, but much smaller than the main one, is nearby. While that doesn't matter in and of itself, what does matter is that the camels wandered off and fell in it, drowning - taking the furs strapped to them with it. Other than what we have on us (which people are demanding gets shared), we have nothing to protect us from the wintry elements all around us.

While you're successfully able to fish out the furs, the camels are kind of just sitting there in the water. Well not sitting, they're dead. Uh. Floating haphazardly? Ghuzhol starts muttering again, but this time about how long it takes a camel to cross a river. Silly Ghuzhol. It's nearing dusk though, as we fish them all out, and there seems to be another problem... the furs are wet, and it's windy, especially on the dunes. It almost seems as if our choices are between freezing to death or freezing to death while wearing freezing cloaks and while sleeping in freezing tents.

That is, unless you've got other ideas?

Using basic techniques for insulation and snuggling up tightly, we're able to get through the nights with only a few deaths. We also hunt on our way back, allowing us to wear the warm (but bloody) skins of dingos and other animals to sustain us further.

Also, military has been added as a tab - after all, most think we'll need it in an eventual confrontation with our neighbors.

We've formed small lines through the field in order to enable water to spread to the furthest elements of the field without having to lug water in waterskins and the like. No one wants to do that kind of work, ugh.

We've also got ideas for how we can manipulate the flooding of the river to make the land more fertile. Using the clay rock obtained from the expedition we put it somewhere as decoration near the river, and plants of unusual size sprang up! This got us thinking about mud, and we've used some from the river for this idea. While the results haven't fully come back it seems to work in theory, so that should provide a good base for irrigation.

(Any irrigation tech in the future will get a +5 bonus - as of now, it's your best technology.)

YEAR 10 RESULTS
@Trick A good idea, though initial tests do not go as planned. After a few cacti needles are stuck where no cacti needles should ever be stuck, you figure out that placing them in certain areas can cause relaxation and various other feelings and moods. In a way, you've also managed to use them for torture. Unfortunately, you haven't determined sticking what where does triggers what mood.

@Temun, Brotherhood of the Spear You've successfully managed to figure out which end is pointy, and which is not. A few accidents have occurred in which spears have been jabbed into sides, though no one has died. You figure that'll serve as "physical education" for now.

@Enkir the Painted (Mynori) After a few fingers are bitten off, you've successfully tamed some wild dingos. While they are prone to being quite noisy, if they're fed they make good hunting partners, even going so far as to cannibalize their own kind if that's who they are hunting. Like master, like pet, or so you suppose.

@Aristo :syringe::syringe:#6465 You've found a small woodland further towards the unexplored end of the river. It's filled with trees you call "oaks", which contain the gunk often used for tanning. A good spot indeed.

@Ranger Your members are known for being rather persuasive... you've recruited half a dozen individuals, all of them female.

@Khazir The Khazirs head to the river, where they find an edible food source they are calling seaweed. It goes well with the fish from the river, and of course having farmland down by the river has meant you have a high quality farm.

@Ulazh-Minal You determine a few spots within relative proximity, those that Clan Tor have not already taken. Such locales include that one pointy rock, the less pointy rock, and the one with the skull.

@masq The blood pumps through you... faster, harder, with more force than any ghoul has ever experienced. His eyes turn white, his skin whiter. A cough of blood, and he is gone. Congratulations, the first ghoul heart attack.

@Torlak(Centurion) Torlak is like a machine, not that you know what that is. The work ethic of Clan Tor means several camps are erected over the course of 5 years, and that just means more of a share of food for you. You are also now well renowned for your work ethic and hunting prowess.

@Millennium The asheborne set up away from the river, going against the grain. After all, the ash is the giver of life. Successful forays are had, and a proper farm is set up, though it isn't named yet.
>>
@砂漠の赤 It seems mixing blood in with herbs induces various effects, not dissimilar to acupuncture. While you haven't determined which does what, you note one makes one calmer, and another seemingly makes you stronger.

@Cultureless German w/ shit name While you aren't sure how exactly storing blood and flesh goes, you do find dunking them in the river can make them more ready for consumption. It also has some small preserving effect, or so you think.

@Inquisitor Two of your members nearly suffocate trying to blow into a piece of leather, claiming it will float. All it does is make you less reputable, and it also means your leather gets taken away for your own safety.
-----
YEAR 15 RESULTS
-----
@Cultureless German w/ shit name You've gained quite a few followers. It seems as if people like having a charismatic leaeder...

@Iandar the optimal type of rock seems to be some kind of mottled rock called graywacke. It's not really gray but you call it that, because reasons.

@Khazir A small logging village has been created without any attacks by your new neighbors - what would you like to name it?

@Trick You're successfully able to incapacitate a man using cactus needles, and can anger and mollify men based on where you place it.

@Torlak(Centurion) Once again, your hunting prowess shows why Torlak and the Tor clan are the most respected hunters in the village. +2 to resources, +1 to agriculture, and many will marry into your family (dubs effect too)

@Ranger A bunch of teenage ghouls begin slitting their wrists in the edgiest trend since a couple ghouls proclaimed themselves vegetarians and starved to death. In an attempt to stop them the elders intervene - only to have their own wrists slit in the process. There goes any semblance of a government.

@masq Villech recruits some members, but the village is wary of priests, fearing too many will lead to bloodshed. Well, unneccesary bloodshed.

@Millennium You've successfully made nets out of rope, and what you call weapons on rope - you can fling out the weapon for a longer reach while retaining a hold.

@Kumok(Erden) You've identified some herbs that act as painkillers.

@Enkir the Painted (Mynori) In the shadows of the skeletons the village found, you have hidden yourself away. Things echo here, strange noises in the night, but that is unimportant. What is important is the glowing figures seen at night - their colors haunt your dreams, and you often dream of painting them if you could just find the right pigment. And luckily for you, the cave has many.

@Ulazh-Minal While you manage to create this so called “Tent”, it has lead to schism within your clan. On one side are so called “Purists” who rail against the “Tentites” who have embraced this new mode of shelter! Tensions are high in camp with numerous fights and small brawls becoming common.
>>
@Neit Neith hollows out a log allowing ghouls to ride within it down the river, while not the most life changing invention it is seen as great fun to the younger ghouls.

@Temun, Brotherhood of the Spear All your men are capable with the spear now, beyond the extent of any average ghoul - but something extraordinary happened quite recently when it came to the pole arts. One man trained with his spear so much it broke - then, he kept on training. Without the blade the methods were quite different than what anyone expected - and he developed it so much that they're now treating this bladeless stick as a weapon. They are calling it the staff. In addition to that you've come up with several different designs for spears, ones shaped like an axe, ones shaped like a sword. More research will have to be done to make them though.

@砂漠の赤 The strongest you've found uses bits of a cactus and blood - it seems to cause extremely strong hallucinations of varying types. You lose all sense of inhibition while using it, to the extent where ghouls have torn apart others while on it.

@Neit It's a volcano. Not much to say really - fire, lava, ash. It dominates the landscape. What was your intent here again? The smog seems to cloud your memory as much as it does the air around you.

Regarding this - Spring has sprung in the lands of Ier, with flowers and cacti shaking off the snow of yesteryear for a brighter, greener today. Of course, this comes with revelations. An exploration was launched along the coast (smaller expeditions may happen on discord from time to time) revealing a friendly ghoul tribe known as the Tans to the south of us, as well as clarifying the threat of the beast like peoples. Known as gnolls, they've destroyed most of the Tans' settlements through raw manpower - a fearsome foe indeed.

We build walls of lumber as well as basic infrastructure, assigning certain things to certain places, such as wood storage in one hut, tanning another, etc. On top of that, boats have drifted to us from the west. They're strange, unlike the canoes we have. Constructed with reeds, they're bound with rope and are able to carry small huts on top. Signs of another tribe...?

FACTION PROJECT TIME - REMINDER ON RULES
Faction Project Rules
Faction projects are done every 5 years and are said to be what you faction will be doing for the next 5 years.

Think deeply on your project and if it can be accomplished at our current stage in development, as projects with unattainable for our level goals will simply be considered lost projects.

EXAMPLE:
Black-Scales will lead some of his Divers in collecting and cataloguing the various fish and shells that can be found in the shallows.

[Dice Rubric]
1-5: Oh god why
6-10: Is it raining frogs?
11-19: Is my house on fire?
20-29: How did we lose half of everything building this?
30-39: The foundation seems to be a bit off
40-59: All done, hope it doesn't fall down
60-79: We did it everything is perfect
80-95: Wow it looks even better then we thought
96-99: Man we are great! We have truly made something amazing!
100: Wow, great job!

Faction projects done in conjunction with another player receive a bonus - as for how working with each other works, I add both rolls and divide them by 150, and use that percentage.

Faction projects may also be answered by one player called Swift, who helped co-design this civ.

With that in mind, please vote AND do your fac projects.

Construct a suitably impressive longhouse for the brotherhood, surely a grand hall will make daring youths flock to join us.

using some strips a of leather, Neit and her people try to make something that will allow rocks to be throw. Faster and with more forcefully than normal. They call it the sling and hope it will be a good addition to the ghoul arsenal.

The Stone-Bashers do their best to develop a kind of tool that can be used for precision stone-shaping. A kind of pointed bone or hard stone, to better flake and chip stones into useful shapes

The attempt is called off after Ghuzhol had left to get supplies, and returned to find the word Gnollatoan carved into a tree, and his family along with his daughter Khirginia Dare missing.

>>1661280
You've managed to find some more oak trees, but this isn't exactly a fertile area. You have found some ghoul bones though.

>>1661282
A grand longhouse is constructed, with separate compartments for each member, and one large dining hall with the longest table you've ever seen.

>>1661283
You've invented something called the saddle. It's like a seat made of leather, so not really a seat - god, you wouldn't get it unless you saw it.

>>1661290
Waiting on Khazir then.

>>1661301
Your initial designs have made something quite unexpected... You've created something called the hardball. Originally you wished to name it the softball after the leather around the rock, but after a few eyes are put out, it's decided hardball would be better. You know, for accuracy.

>>1661306
The temple is more like a hut. Well, let's be fair, it really is just a hut.

>>1661307
The Stone-Bashers fail at this, utterly and completely. Instead, you find a boulder. A very, very large boulder. By some means you have brought it back to the main settlement. By very, very unknown means. That doesn't matter though. What does matter is the fact that this aforementioned giant boulder rolled over after a light breeze, and crushed much of the housing in the main settlement. Some are beginning to worship it as an avatar of the volcano, a god of destruction.

This religion is called rock and roll.

>>1661309
Town completed, while it has no special qualities as of yet, it has some fancy schmancy dirt roads connecting it to both areas. What would you like to name it?
>>
Town is called Jikhofen.

Someone forgot and rolled in discord, so lemme address it here.

>I just want my guys to be smarter/stronger. Can I focus on teaching my men to strategize (the best Ooga Boogas can) and just have them get Steiner through basic bodily training.

Your ghouls are at the peak possible fitness for ghouls. In fact, they appear to have created a training routine for this... they call it gharate.

The House of Ivory is enthralled by the Paintings of the Tall Rock, they are fascinated by it's beauty and quite frankly, size. Thus using their small base in the Boneyard as a staging post the Ghouls move among the neutral members of the Tribe, to join them in settling the Pillar and to join the House of Ivory in this endeavor.

(For clarification, if you do extra building for the world, as this player has done with his art, you get points that will allow you to not crit fail as they just did. They're not super potent, but can occasionally come in handy. It's still a failure though.)

The pillar stands before the travelers, unbroken, indomitable. It seems warmer here, but with the heat comes new problems. Wild animals have flocked here, most likely due to the heat, as much as the pillar worshippers claim it's because of the pillar. Due to this, beasties like the dingos dwell here, ones rather more aggressive. They sleep during the day, and at night harass the ghouls. The leader of the expedition calls it off for now, heading back, but valuable experience is gained on how to start a settlement in this area, as well as knowledge of the animals living here. It should prove useful during another attempt.
