You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

King Connaught enters Reagan's castle without bothering with guards; after all, the castle is still on the grounds of his palace.

"Welcome, father." Reagan greets King Connaught with a curtsey and invites him into her castle. "Thank you for joining us to dinner."

"It's no burden," King Connaught assures her. "It's been too long since we spent time together, and I'd like to know why my new son-in-law didn't end up like all your other suitors."

"I have no idea what you're talking about, father," Reagan says innocently.

"Of course you don't." King Connaught snorts. "You just caused the messes. I'm the one who had to clean them up for you."

"I would expect nothing less of such a dutiful father," Reagan says. "Speaking of, I would like to introduce you to my husband's consorts and concubines, Lady Olwen auk Vaughan, Lady Seren auk Caunys, Eleri Lloyd, Esyllt Coleran and Delyth. And this is Prince Meirion's advisor, Myrddin."

"It's my pleasure to make your acquaintance," King Connaught says. He can hardly complain about how many women you entertain when Reagan is the one introducing them so directly.

Nimue came out of somewhere to look after the children for the evening, so you can focus on your business with the King over dinner. The dining room is in complete silence while the servants bring the meat and pour the wine, but as soon as they leave…

"I would like your opinion on a matter, Prince Meirion," King Connaught says. "Do you think I should abdicate and leave the crown to Reagan?"

>[Dilettante/1d8] "I believe that decision is yours and yours alone, your majesty."
>[Sovereign/1d6] "It would make things easier if you did, your majesty."

We got time, and Lord knows we got an uphill battle taking over this kingdom even with the King friendly to us. No need to piss him off.

"I believe that decision is yours and yours alone, your majesty."

King Connaught stares with a judging eye. You recognize the look; he's trying to decide if this is an honest answer or if you're being ambiguous just so your answer will be interpreted as the one he wants to hear.

"A fair point," King Connaught agrees. "I have been thinking about retiring so I could spend my time traveling and hunting, perhaps even find a concubine. I'm not that old, you know. First, however, I need to know my kingdom is in good hands. We'll talk about this again later in the future. In the meantime, I believe I can delegate certain responsibilities to my daughter."

"I'll be happy to assist you, father," Reagan says. "You can just ask me directly. There's no need to be so circumspect about it."

"In that case, you can start with Scathn and Ulainn," King Connaught says. "Their taxes are a little light this year. They claim their mines weren't as profitable as expected due to the harsh winter and poorer crops."

"Is this a common occurrence?" Esyllt asks.

"It happens every year, although this time, the amount they're missing is large enough to affect the rest of Olstren's finances," King Connaught answers. "They're missing nearly a tenth of the expected amount."

"Are they doing this on purpose?" You ask.

"It certainly isn't an accident," King Connaught says. "It's just impossible for me to prove anything."

The duchies of Scathn and Ulainn are your remaining political opposition in Olstren. You need to deal with them somehow if you want Reagan to smoothly inherit the kingdom.

"We have the means to deal with them," Myrddin assures you. "You just need to decide which one to use."

"I'm glad you're taking this seriously, Prince Meirion," King Connaught says. "I won't doubt my daughter's decisions, but some of my vassals were concerned that you would show too little concern for Olstren's well-being."

"On the contrary, the prince thinks quite highly of Olstren," Esyllt says. "He's already asked me to make plans about the trade charter your majesty granted him. I will do my best to ensure Olstren benefits from it as well."

"Oh?" King Connaught raises an eyebrow at Esyllt. "Are you the one who manages the prince's purse then?"

"The wealth I manage can hardly be contained inside a purse," Esyllt says crossly. "And Lady Seren does assist me when she can."

"My specialty is alchemy," Seren says. "I'm afraid I know little about trade beyond that."

"Interesting. You've gathered an impressive household, Prince Meirion. I wonder, how will you introduce them to Olstren's nobility? It's hardly uncommon for men to have a concubine or two, but they tend to keep quiet about it. That's not an option for you though; I'm afraid word of your… prowess has already spread."

"This is a cause for celebration, so we should celebrate," you say. "I have been practicing my singing voice lately. I'm told it's a popular hobby in Olstren."

"Quite," the King says with a smile, "but I'm afraid very few are as good singers as they think they are. I hope you didn't put too much effort into it."

"Just the right amount of effort, your majesty," you say. "Eleri's training was quite exacting."

"Your talent isn't bad, your highness," Eleri assures you. "If you're going to sing, you should at least sing at the level of a professional understudy."

"A few songs will make people like you a little more, Prince Meirion," King Connaught says, "but it won't impress them. Which weapons have you trained with?"

"I prefer the rapier."

"Learn the spear," King Connaught insists. "It's the kingdom's traditional weapon. Easy enough for commoners to use, but versatile enough for a skilled knight to keep. In many ways, the spear unites the kingdom."

>[Military/Autosuccess] "Learning the spear shouldn't be too hard."

"Learning the spear shouldn't be too hard."

"The reach, weight, footwork, stance, balance, offense and defense are all completely different from the rapier," Olwen says. "The basics of the spear can be learned in a few weeks, but mastery of the weapon can easily take decades."

"So don't challenge anyone to a duel unless they're drunk," King Connaught says.

"Battle experience does count for something," you remind both of them, only to receive condescending looks.

You get the feeling Olwen is enjoying this far too much.

"It's been a while, but I did practice the spear in the past," Delyth says. "I can at least teach you the basics. You'll need to find a weapon though."

You'll need to find an enchanted spear. You already have Rhithcan for subtlety and finesse, so maybe something with an earth or fire enchanted for the spear to give it more power?

That's something to think about later. You have to see what you can get your hands on first.

"Esyllt, could you find an enchanted spear for me?"

"It's a simple request," Esyllt says. "I'll ask around and let you know when I found a suitable weapon."

"Thank you."

The settles your business talk for dinner. King Connaught does ask about your personal affairs, but Reagan mercifully avoids the more embarrassing topics.

After dinner, the Reagan's father the part and you relax a little.

"That went extremely well," Reagan says. "Not that I was afraid father would be upset at you, but I am happy that you are making an effort to accommodate Olstren's nobility without being too overbearing."

>"It's your kingdom. I can't very well threaten your vassals."

"They haven't give me a reason to be overbearing yet," you say. "I'll be reasonable until they give me a reason to stop being reasonable."

"By which you mean you'll spy on them," Reagan concludes.

"And yet no one will be hurt," you say. "If everything goes right, they won't even notice."

"We have informants reporting to us from everywhere in Olstren," Myrddin says. "This just requires a bit of coin to facilitate things and some time, and most of that will be because of the distances involved. It'll take a few days for the messengers to do their job."

"And in the meantime, you can practice the spear," Olwen says. "Whose help do you want with that?"

"Delyth, you can teach me the basic form," you say. "Olwen, I'll need you to help me adapt my style. Can you do it?"

"Sure, no problem," Olwen says.

"It would be my pleasure, your highness," Delyth adds.

"You'll be expected to duel some of the knights," Reagan says. "The first few will be looking for bragging rights, but if you defeat them, most knights will defer to the more experienced warriors. The informal social conventions can get complicated, but as a general rule, it's considered a grievous snub for a weaker knight to challenge an opponent worthy of a much stronger knight."

It makes sense. After all, knights are only effective if they know their limits. If they go after an opponent they can't match and lose, the consequences can be catastrophic depending on the circumstances. It's the sort of thing that can change the course of wars in the worst cases.

The fact that you won't have to deal with dozens of young idiots looking to make a name for themselves is a nice side benefit.
