Welcome to a fully baked civ quest that won't be dropped a few days after running! I and some others have been working on this off and on for several months, and this will be the inaugural run of it.

Some key details...
- factions will be available after a few turns which will set up the, well, setting.
- race select will occur first followed by environment select
- world is custom built

Not much else to say really, let's get into it.

Race select - while all races will be playable, the race you will select will determine to some extent what environments you can start with, and definitely will have a major impact on the civ as a whole.

Choices are in the image.

You have picked the ghouls. An interesting choice, of course.

Now for the environment.

A. You will start in the shadows of the mountains of the southern continent.

B. You call the ashlands your home, next to volcanoes, next to deserts, next to a river delta!

C. Your people have lived in the jungles near the ocean for millennia, but now you have finally begun to develop under a new leader...

D. You were island dwelling for a time, before a cataclysm destroyed where you lived. Now you live on greener shores, in a bay hidden from the human eye.

Your people are those of the river. It has not been long since you first came into being, but you are old enough that the elders can't remember the first of your kind. You call yourself ghouls, because... well because. There's probably a reason, but your people have never known. You came here from your ancestral home after the Opening. This was a time of which your elders know a little - their parents were there. The earth itself broke, and fell into itself, crumbling like the ash beneath your feet. It made the land unlivable, and it affected the land around, with volcanoes erupting, and the sky darkening. After a long journey, you were led by a ghoul named Ier to your current home. It does not have a name, for nothing of note has happened to give it one. You have subsisted off small animals found wandering like rodents, and off of small crops easily found in the environment, but the size of the tribe means you must expand, as ordered by the elders. You are the first of a new generation to reach adulthood. Welcome to the Innerworld.

The group of explorers, 15 strong, have found another offshoot of the river, and near it, plants! Not a kind you've seen though. They're green, but spikey, and one of them has obviously been damaged by a recent storm. Some kind of juice is inside - it almost looks like water...

Before you get a closer look, you're waylaid by a group of animals you've never seen before, 20 of them in total. They look, uh, hungry. With a bark, one bites one of your legs. They seem to be approaching, and looking at our friend's leg, they can cause some damage.

You are armed with wooden spears, and in the nude. What do you do?

181 vs 157 (167 + 10 - 20, numbers advantage, size disadvantage)

We fight pretty evenly, each stab of the spear being returned by a dingo bite. Blood's flying everywhere, it's rather gruesome. Still, by the end of the first bout, 2 of our men are dead, 3 injured, with 5 of theirs dead, and 3 limping. They are just keeping their distance and snarling now. hat should we do?

After you lock shoulders and make it clear you aren't going anywhere, the dingos back off, leaving the dead behind. A few of us pick up the bodies, while the remainder go and check out the plants. After trying a bit (and getting pricked in the process) we decide it's pretty good. The juice is not juice though, it's actually water. This could be pretty useful for consuming in the dry ashland. We take them back home, and plant them, along with skinning and eating the dingos. Our view of the land also expands.

How does clothing work? Glad you asked. After having one too many rocks hit one too many skins resulting in one too many open wounds, we've finally figured out a solution to that whole "always naked" thing. Using the skin from the dingos to begin with, we've used salt water from the sea and some gunk from a few sparsetrees to try and dry out the skin. It's all gooey and when we touch it our skin gets all dried out, so we assume the same should work here. Maybe. Turns out it did, after we dried it in the sun and removed all the nasty dingo stuff. It's sort of pliable, but it's better than just wearing dingo skin, we guess. It's called leather, because their life leatht their bodies, haha. Get it? We're murderers. Shit, man. We've used rodent skin for everyone else, and we've made at least loincloths and footwraps for everyone, with elders getting dingo leather. That's the bigger stuff so they don't get as cold at night.

Uh, it seems B won. Anyways, we have begun putting some animals in pens, and attempting to tame them. While some lesser rodents are included, the most notable animal is the camel. They're big enough to ride on, and also contains fat. Some elders are complaining of things containing other things now. One even said something to the effect of "back in my day if we ate something containing something, it was another ghoul!" They then spat on the ground, muttered something about today's youth, and had a nap.

(Here's the expanded map view I neglected - also, you can now vote for two options in terms of whatever bar things when it's mutually exclusive. The second one will be at a disadvantage though, always - I'd have you roll 5 d100s and I'd take the second lowest. Rock on though guys.)

Cannibalism wins in a landslide! Fun!

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. These words echoed our previous religious views. We buried our dead in the wasteland, and to the wasteland spirits they would return. No. Longer. We have taken charge of our own fate - or at least our own bodies. One day, we decided to sacrifice a man. Why? Because that one elder's words struck us as... fascinating. We were enamoured with the idea of getting the maximum use out of human bodies as well - maximum use being tied with masculinity, or so it went. So our first major religion has been set up, and it is called Desangier. Desanguists believe that all the blood that flows through ghouls belongs to the most crafty among us. A clergy is made up of all eligible males, and it relies on occasional sacrifice, with the head priest being that who manages to consume the most of the body. The blood that flows through all is the blood that had flown through Ier, it is said, and thus the heir of, uh, Ier, is that who takes in the most of his blood.

Strangely, we have noted physical reactions in those who consume flesh and blood of each other. They don't need to eat as much, and seem... sharper, eyes less dull, fitter, and so on. However, we limit the amount of ghouls we eat - only the dead are consumed, along with one sacrifice a year. At first we had thought about anyone who was willing... but then we considered that some might be pressured into willing. And we wouldn't want that, now would we? We will also consume those we come across, or if we fight amongst each other. After all, only ghouls are descended from Ier... all blood must belong to us, right? That does not mean we will massacre though - we're not monsters, jeez.

Map in a bit... but first, what you see.

A group of 25 ghouls set out to see what they can see in this wide world. They travel by the side of the river, and they see some interesting things. Off in the distance, a hill of incredible size, fiery colors bursting from its top - skulls piled in rows and columns, undecipherable and not entirely ghoul-like - a type of animal that seemed to blend in with the ashland's terrain, the size of a man - and finally a small hill. The hill is unimportant, but on the other size they behold what can only be described as a giant. It turns to us, every footstep shaking the earth, every footstep quaking the ground - and it flips its face covering, if it is even that, and begins to speak.

(note, you're still in the ashlands)

It seems that we're having trouble figure out a head priest. You see, this will be the first time having one. Since no one keeps track during the blood frenzies, it's mainly who can brag about having eaten the most, and whoever is believed the most. As such, each faction can make a claim, though they will compete with an NPC along with other factions.

The NPC this time round is Fent Ghaksun.

NPC factions wanting to be high priest, beat this roll.

Brotherhood of the Spear
Faction Description
In order to survive on a daily basis we must hunt and kill, in addition this is a world where any stranger might be an enemy and their flesh our next meal, thus skill at arms is vital to the survival for us all.
Furthermore, not all young men, either due to poverty or due to competition from older males, can expect to have a woman and family of their own.
The Brotherhood of the Spear offer a solution to both of these challenges. The members devote themselves to honing their skills at hunting and warfare, seeking glory, ranking within the fraternity and recognition from the rest of the tribe. At the same time, the brotherhood of the group offers a surrogate for a conventional family.

You follow the being, hoping to track it back to wherever it came. Its footsteps leave imprints the size of children in its wake, the sand kicked up being enough to temporarily blind your little group. And it does indeed use the sand for that. It notices you tailing out and uses the environment and its great size to its advantage, and in minutes it is gone, merely a figure disappearing on the horizon.

You decide to press onwards through the harsh ashlands once more, hopefully discovering things in the process. You follow the river, the cool breeze cooling your skin with its cool moisture during the day, and providing a necessary source of drinking water at night, when you gather water for your waterskins from it. It doesn't lead you astray as by the afternoon of the second day you appear to have found the camp of the giant from before. And now there are many of them. The one you met seems amused that you managed to find him.

The camp is filled with giants of many heights. The tallest overshadows all of you, 15 meters high, while the smallest is three or four feet taller than the average ghoul. They're garbed in all manners of things, some looking similar to you, some wearing the same strange glittery stones the first giant you met wore. They have strange homes set up, made of what almost looks like leather, but not. It has the strange symbol the giant showed you, the M, etched onto it somehow.

The giants look expectantly at you, as if waiting for you to say something. You note some are holding onto clubs and other weapons, as if anticipating you to move violently against them. The weapons look worn.

What do you do?

Your hand waving does little to elucidate the situation to either side, but it does lift the pressure a little. Some of your men start laughing nervously, and soon enough it spreads through the camp like wildfire. A smaller giant approaches. Garbed in leather and fur, his cheeks are scarred, and he wears his hair in an oily ponytail. He begins to speak.

"Young ghouls, where are you walking?"

What's this - he knows who you are, and stranger, he knows your language!
>>
>>1623702

>>

He smiles broadly.

"Not the correct answer, young one, but a good answer. For your future reference, respond as such - whenever one of my kind says "Young ghouls, where are you walking" - or any variation thereof - you must say "To find our way back home." Otherwise you may be attacked or worse. Wouldn't do to have you attacked, now would it?"

As he says this, you do note the crowd seems rather agitated now.

>>1623711
>>1623712
"I speak your tongue, yes. Did you assume you were the only ghouls out here? Rather foolish. As for me, I am an Ehwaz. Perhaps more colloquially we are referred to as "giants." We are nomads of this land and we are traveling through to make it to our winter homes. Right now we are in a long fall, yet signs are showing us a seasonal shift. We must make it to our homes before then. Follow the river, and you shall find it - I must warn you though, it is a long journey on foot."

"Now then, what tribe are all of you? Where do you come from? My companion al-Hazred here seems to know you."

He gestures towards the giant you all have already met.
>>
>>1623737
Noname tribe. Pronounced KNOW - NAH - MAY

>>1623737
"We hail from the Ier tribe and our home is situated a couple of days from here if you follow the river. We were exploring when we ran into your companion, speaking of which we haven't heard your name, my name is Kumok of the Capan clan."

"Somehow neither of these names sound convincing.

I can provide you enough supplies to get home, if that is what you wish."
>>
>>1623737
"Yes those supplies would be very useful on the journey home. If its not too much trouble might I ask how far your own journey is?"
>>
>>1623755
Offer the giant people gifts to demonstrate our gratitude for their assistance. Maybe some shiny beads and a camel.
>>
>>1623771
"Depends on the weather. A month or two for us perhaps, but given our strides, that's much longer for you."
>>
>>1623780
They accept the camel quite willingly - right before bringing it to the kitchen. In return, you're given a stone axe. It seems worth it.
>>
>>1623755
"What were those weird symbols your companion showed us? Is the I supposed to represent us and the M symbol you the giants?"
>>
>>1623789
YAAAAY INNOVATION!

We shall upgrade all wooden axes to stone!
>>
>>1623792
"That name - Ehwaz. Hm, I shouldn't ruin all the fun - find that out the history behind that for yourself. But yes, the M, Ehwaz, represents us - and the I, Isa, represents you."
>>
>>1623755
I show them some of my lucky charms I had make by drawing in white and red on some flat stones. I believe they keep away the bad dreams? Or at the very least you can skim them
>>
>>1623801
Ask what the N represents
>>
>>1623803
al-Der seems somewhat shocked with it at first, but it wears off. He mutters something about blood, but it's inaudible from that far below him. He hands them back to you.

>>1623805
They ignore you, intent on cooking the camel.
>>
>>1623817
Leave this place with the stone axe and begin theory crafting stone spears and stone knives
>>
>>1623821
So, you are agreeing to leave with the supplies they've offered?
>>
>>1623829
yes
>>
>>1623829
Yes
>>
>>1623829
Well yeah
Wait for others to eat first to see if it's poisoned
>>
>>1623829
Yes
"I hope we can meet again Thel al-Der. I wish you luck on your road back home."
>>
>>1623829
Are the supplies shit?
>>
You return home with new knowledge, a new tool, and some more knowledge of the map. The giants weren't lying - the weather is getting colder, especially at night...

We've managed to create stone knives, but stone axes and stone spears are as of yet eluding us. Looking at the stone axe we already have, it seems some form of binding is needed... While the weather is getting worse, the cacti are finally blooming.

Heated stones and fur lining allows for heat retention and fireplaces mean staying warm during the coldest nights. However, heat does seem to escape through the small opening if not covered with skins. Granted, too many skins does in fact mean passing out, as some have learned.

>>
>>1643364
Trial and error? Like all ooga booga do
>>
>>1643364
I say we observe what plants do well enough as things get colder (i.e. what isn't obviously withering or dying), and experiment from there to see what's worth eating/foraging. If all else fails, just scavenge for shit we think will keep well over time.
>>
>>1643364
As times get colder we will find more plants of certain types, these cold plants will be the ones we need to cultivate.

Agreed, focus on the plants and observe natural foliage. Trial and error but let's run multiple different crop experiments at once for sake of time.
