You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were being led to the Mage Tower by none other than Princess Lucina Eisenwand herself, apparently having come on her own business and just so happening to break up a little skirmish between you and two unruly Mana Knights.

Justine and Caroline both remained silent, their heads drooped in shame as Lucina pauses at the foot of the crystal tower. Up ahead, you could see a large stone ring with glowing runes carved all along its length. A pair of crystal golems stood guard on either side, ready to repel any intruders. Thankfully, one wave of Lucina's hand and the golems stand down, stepping aside to let her pass.

"Now, if this is your first time to the Tower, the transport system can be a little... distressing to newcomers." Lucina warns you as she waves her hand again, and various runes on the ring begin to glow brighter.

"Don't worry! The Templar can handle it!" Nino boasts in your stead.

"Also, we'll be porting straight to the Archmagus himself." Lucina continues, and eyes you warily. "The best I can say is that he's... quite the odd one. Promise me you'll behave?"

You nod with respect. You won't start anything without good reason.

"Good, that's all I ask." Lucina nods as the runes glow bright and the portal forms a swirling vortex of rainbow energy within the ring. "Let us proceed, then."

And with great grace and practice, Lucina strides through the magical maw of energy, Justine and Caroline following her in obediently.

With Nino and Morgan behind you, you knew it was your turn. The crystal golems gaze at you curiously, as if wondering how you would fare.

You take a breath and walk through.

You see a series of brief flashes of colors that you don't recognize and can barely comprehend, as well as a sensation of being pulled forward, as if you were attached to a rope and getting yanked along for a ride.

However, the sensation disappears as quickly as it started, and your vision clears up to show you standing in a rather large and ornate looking office.

"Templar, you really should step-" Lucina tries to warn you, but it's too late.

Morgan and Nino come out of the portal and slam right into your back. Thankfully, your armor and size means that you're barely even phased from the impact, but both girls probably received a nasty bump.

"-forward." Lucina sighs. "Every time."

"Perhaps you should warn them BEFORE they step through." A man in long black robes chuckles as he materializes behind the ancient wooden desk in the center of the office. He had long blond hair, and a face that looked unnaturally attractive, straddling the line of femininity. You immediately suspected him of being an Elf or fae creature, but you noted he lacked any of those features.

Lucina, Justine, and Caroline immediately bow in respect to him.

"Now now, Lucina, you know you don't have to do that, considering you outrank me at this point!" The Archmagus chuckles and then glances at you. "Now, what business would a Templar have with our fine establishment? And bringing back one of our wayward students in the process?"

"Stop lying!" Nino sticks her tongue out at the Archmagus, still hiding behind you as cover.

"The Archmagus sighs.

"Nino, I'm not-"

"Show them your REAL face!" Nino says accusingly.

"See, this is why I don't like dealing with children. Especially ones with magical potential." The Archmagus sighs.

The Archmagus then waves his hand in front of his face, which is immediately replaced by an animal skull mask, with long pointed horns.

No, not a mask. The skull was his actual head!

"They always have an annoying knack of seeing through glamours." The Archmagus grunts, tiny ruby orbs glowing in his eye sockets.

You manage to stay your hand, standing your ground as firmly as any well trained Templar.

Morgan meanwhile, is her normal stoic self, though you notice her take a couple of steps back. Nino, of course, remains hiding behind you.

"Hmmmm, interesting." The Archmagus leans forward, his dense, compact eyes scanning over you. "Your kind usually either runs away or tries to attack me when they see my true self. And I mean humans in general, not just your order of knights."

You nod in understanding.

"Also, how rude of me not to properly introduce myself!" The Archmagus makes a polite bow. "I am Archmagus Elias, the overseer of the Mage Tower in this city."

"Are you some kind of lich?" Morgan raises an eyebrow.

"Well, that's a good guess, but no." Elias chuckles. "I'm still very much alive, with a heartbeat and everything."

"We aren't even completely sure what he is, either." Lucina adds. "But he has vast knowledge and skill in the magical arts, which is why the Mage Guild allowed him in our ranks."

"Yet they stick him all the way out here. Because they don't fully trust him?" Morgan observes.

"Well..." Lucina pauses.

"I can't blame them. I have a skull for a head, after all." Elias waves off Morgan's words. "Now then, your business here?"

You point to Nino.

"I'm sorry, I don't quite understand." Elias tilts his skull to the side in confusion.

"We want to know why the Mage Tower is so interested in Nino." Morgan speaks for you. "Locking her up in the Tower, sending out Mage Knights to forcibly bring her back? That's pretty fishy."

"Ah..." Elias nods, his skull remaining expressionless. "Something this sensitive requires a measure of... privacy. You don't mind if we speak alone? Man to man?"

You look to Nino and then to Elias.

You nod in agreement.

"Excellent." Elias steps back and motions for you to move up. "Just step within this circle."

Fortunately, you were trained enough to recognize a teleport rune. A simple enough trick that mages could do. You step forward, putting yourself on the rune. Elias snaps his fingers and there's a flash of blue light.

And then you find yourself in a different, but no less ornately decorated room. All around, you could see bookshelves carved from ancient elven wood, holding countless tomes of forbidden and powerful knowledge.

"My private library." Elias explains. "There are enough protective wards in place so we may be away from prying eyes."

You nod. At least this Archmagus was foresighted enough to keep security in mind. One thing you could at least appreciate about him.

"Now... where were we?" Elias' crimson eyes glow bright for a second. "Ah yes, Nino. A curious and concerning case, she is."

You tap your armored foot, already starting to get a bit impatient.

"Yes, yes, we are getting there." Elias reaches his hand out, and you can see the ghostly image of a person suspended in the air. "I'm not aware how much they each you Templars, but you do know the concept of mana, correct?"

You nod. Mana was the source of the Mages' magic, similar to how the light of Sol powered holy miracles, while the dread glow of Luna was the basis of Elven magic. Mana was present in the very air, and seeped out from deep rents in the earth, and Mages could absorb and draw upon that power.

"Anyways, Mages are individuals capable of absorbing the mana from their environment, whether it be through the air they breathe, the water they drink, or the food they eat." Elias continues, and the projection of the human body glows as small blue particles gather in it. "But the one thing Mages can't, and haven't figured out how to do, is to artificially generate mana. We must rely on the natural environment or certain phenomena for that."

You glower at Elias. You were starting to suspect that Nino was different?

"Nino, however, is different." Elias confirms your suspicions, his ivory skull gleaming in the light. "She can generate spells whose power exceeds what she should be able to normally absorb and collect. We've not been able to figure out why just yet, but there is a hypothesis that little Nino can generate mana within her own body."

You lean forward, glaring at Elias. You knew the Mages' reputation for experimenting on anything and everything to further their research.

"It wasn't anything we did on our part." Elias tries to assure you, his skull staring blankly at you. "Nino was one of the many castaways left upon our door. You're no stranger to that, correct?"

True. The Order did like recruiting war orphans while on campaign, considering their eagerness and motivation to join and fight. Even the Church used its own orphanages as recruiting grounds. And you always heard stories of diamonds in the rough...

Not that you would know, though. You were one of those initiates who had voluntarily joined the Order. Now that you think of it, you wonder how mother and father were doing...

Anyways, you still had a job to focus on. You continue to glare warily at Elias.

"Obviously, there are a great many concerns about this." Elias continues his explanation. "After all, what is causing this generation of excess mana in her body? Is it some natural process, or something done to her at birth? Are there any negative side effects to her using this power of hers?"

You pause as you remember how Nino passed out when she cast that gigantic fireball.

"I must warn you, this power of hers should be used sparingly, as nobody knows the consequences otherwise." Elias cautious. "This is why we've never told her, for fear that it would... 'encourage' her to push those boundaries."

You shake your head, meaning to chide Elias for his short sightedness. Where has all this secrecy gotten both him and her?

"Well, now that you know, you are free to tell her, if you wish." Elias shrugs. "But remember, this is a secret not just to protect her from herself, but anybody who would want to take advantage of her."

You give Elias a knowing look.

"Oh, you know what I mean." Elias brushes off your stare. "There are a number of rather unscrupulous groups and individuals out there who would love to have a mage of Nino's caliber, as an asset or a guinea pig. You wouldn't want her being snatched away by the Elves in the middle of the night, would you?"

You fists tighten. You remember the stories. Part of the reason how the Elven wars started were the many instances of the Elves and their fae allies abducting human children with magical potential.

"Ideally, we would like to have Nino return to the Tower, but after having met you, I realize that won't happen without a fight." Elias sighs, his red eyes flickering for a moment. "So I have some propositions, if you don't mind, to help keep her protected."

You shrug. What did he have in mind?

"The simplest solution is to have her wear a Nullstone." Elias opens his palm, and a small stone ring attacked to a necklace appears in it. "It would limit the amount of mana she would be able to use at any one time. Of course, this means she won't be able to cast at maximum efficiency, but it would certainly be safer."

All right...

"The second option is a bit more complex." Elias continues. "We could give Nino a familiar, which can act as both a personal protector and a way to siphon off her excess mana."

Ah yes, familiars. Basically creatures who had their souls bonded to a mage. This allowed them to share their mana, boosting the mage's casting ability while also boosting the ability of the familiar. But where would Nino find-

"I see that she's quite attached to that direwolf pup of yours." Elias says, as if reading your mind.

Romulus? Well...

"If neither of those options appeal to you, then you're always free to roll the dice and walk away." Elias concludes, his eyes smoldering now. "She is in your care now, so the choice and consequence naturally shall fall on you."

You take the nullstone limiter from Elias. Turning Romulus into a magical familiar sounded like a rather drastic step. Besides, there wasn't anything stopping you from going through with it in the future if necessary.

And then you're back in his office. There you see Lucina continuing to chastise Justine and Caroline, while Nino has used Morgan's back as a replacement hiding spot in your absence.

"You're back!" Nino says happily as she clings to your armor. "I was afraid he'd teleport you into Sol or something!"

"That would never happen." Elias huffs. "The distance would be too far. I would've used a volcano."

You turn to Lucina and hold your fingers up to the side of your helmet in an approximation of elf ears.

"Elves? What would you want with them?" Lucina asks in surprise.

"Well, we wanted to know what the situation with the Elves in the city was." Morgan steps forward. "There's been rumors about Elven soldiers marauding in the surrounding forests."

"Those are worrying rumors, as I do not tolerate banditry on these lands, regardless of who performs it." Lucina narrows her eyes. "And you think the Elves are responsible for this sudden surge in crime?"

You nod. You then bring out the burnt Elven badge you had collected from the ambush.

"Yes... I remember Havel mentioning this." Lucina sighs. "Unfortunately, there's not much I can say. The Elves in this city have lived peacefully alongside humans for generations now. If there is a plot, I don't believe it's coming from within the city."

"So say your spies, correct?" Morgan raises an eyebrow.

"You're a sharp one." Lucina smiles wryly. "But in either case, you won't find what you're looking for in Eisenwand."

"Well, thanks for the information." Morgan nods.

You bow to the Princess in thanks.

"H-hey, no need for that!" Lucina blushes. "Well, you three should be on your way then!"

"Of course." Elias nods and there's a flash of light.

You find yourself back at the gates of the Tower, obviously having been teleported out. You turn to see Morgan and Nino next to you.

"Farewell, Templar. And good luck on your journey." You hear Elias' voice whisper into your ear, despite him being nowhere to be seen. "You've certainly picked up some rather interesting companions..."

Well, first things first, you point a finger to Nino's heart, then ball up a fist and open it up rapidly.

"So... you're saying there's something special inside of me?" Nino asks.

You nod, and point to her heart again and stretch your arms out to indicate something large.

"So... I have a lot of magical power inside me?" Nino gasps.

You nod again, then make a slashing motion across your neck.

"But... it's dangerous." Nino frowns. "I guess things are starting to make sense now..."

That's when you hold up the Nullstone limiter in front of her.

"Is that..." Nino's eyes widen. "N-no! I don't want that! I want to cast my magic the way I want to!"

"Is that meant to protect her?" Morgan asks, inspecting the artifact carefully.

You nod in confirmation.

"That thing is a punishment for mages!" Nino shouts. "A shackle! I don't want to wear something like that!"

Romulus pokes his head out, looking at both of you with concern. Seems like he doesn't know which side to pick.

Oh boy, this might be harder than you thought...

Ugh, you never were that good at dealing with kids, much less magical ones that could level cities with a thought.

You sigh and retract your arm. However, you waggle a finger at her with a warning. If she went overboard with her magic, you wouldn't hesitate to use it on her, so she better be on her best behavior.

"I'll be careful! I promise!" Nino assures you.

"Jeez, I wonder what Naru is going to think of all this." Morgan sighs.

Oh right, Naru! You remember that she had stayed behind at the Monastery this whole time!

Hmmm, perhaps you could stop by the market first. See if there was anything for sale. You did have quite a bit of coin from collecting those bounties, after all. You point down the road to the market to the two girls.

"Huh? You want to go shopping?" Morgan shrugs. "Sure."

"Yeah! Shopping!" Nino chimes.

Perhaps it would do well to find something for yourself. You were only using high quality, but still mundane weaponry and armor. If you were going to progress any farther through this dangerous land, upgrades were in order.

So with that, you begin patrolling the blacksmithing shops, inspecting the armors and weapons on display.

THUNDER HAMMER: A heavy, two handed warhammer that releases a burst of powerful electricity on contact with the target. Packs a harder punch than the halberd, but is slower to wield and cannot be used as a thrusting weapon.

ADAMANTINE HALBERD: Upgrades your current halberd to a sharper and more durable material, giving a slight increase to damage.

MITHRIL CHESTPLATE: A chestplate made out of mithril, a substance much harder and more durable than regular steel. Increases toughness when worn.

You decide to pick out a mithril chestplate, fashioned and colored black to match the rest of your armor, of course.

"Ooof! This is damn heavy!" Morgan grunts as she tests the weight.

You nod and give a thumbs up. It was a good sign of quality.

"I suppose we should start heading back now." Morgan frowns as she looks up at the sky. "I don't know why, but I think time got messed up in the Tower."

"Well, there ARE a lot of time-space fluctuations around there thanks to all of the numerous magical wards and runes all interacting with each other in unpredictable ways!" Nino chirps. "It's not uncommon for time to flow differently inside than outside!"

Scary.

Well, in either case, you all better starting heading back to the Monastery soon...

>FATE POINT USED
>You have 1 point left!

Thankfully, the trip back to the Monastery is rather uneventful. However, you are a bit wary when having to travel outside of the city walls over to the Templar stronghold. After all, there was a lot of open ground between the two. Perfect for an ambush in low light conditions.

But again, nothing happens, and you return tot he Monastery unmolested, where you see two very familiar Mana Knights waiting for you.

"As part of our punishment, the Archmagus has decreed that we formally apologize to you." Justine says coolly as she bows to you. "Our deepest apologies for attacking you without provocation earlier today."

"Yeah! Don't think we're doing this because we want to!" Caroline grunts, also bowing down. "Anyways, sorry for the inconvenience!"

You turn to Morgan and Nino, who just shrug.

You nod and reward Justine with a headpat, being careful to be as gentle as possible. Justine, to her credit, doesn't react or otherwise make any sort of outburst.

"H-hey, what about me?!" Caroline blurts.

You wag your finger at her. She didn't sound very sincere in her apology.

"F-fine! Not like I needed your stupid headpat anyways!" Caroline stomps past, clearly fuming.

"My apologies." Justine sighs. "Caroline can be... difficult at times."

That was a bit of an understatement.

"So I assume that means you two won't be chasing us around anymore?" Morgan asks.

"Correct." Justine confirms. "We have direct orders from the Archmagus not to interfere with your activities unless absolutely necessary."

"Well, that's good to hear, I guess." Morgan nods.

"And I must apologize to you as well, Nino." Justine turns to your mage. "We were only doing what we thought was best for you."

"Yeah... well..." Nino pauses, suddenly unsure of how to react. "Fine! But you owe me a sleepover!"

"Ah, well..." Justine blinks, taken off guard by Nino's unconventional request. "We'll take that into consideration."

"Hey Justine! We're burnin' daylight here!" Caroline whines.

"Coming." Justine sighs in exasperation. "Until we meet again."

And just like that, the two Mana Knights wink out of existence as they teleport away. Must be a really convenient spell.

"Come on! Come on! We gotta tell Naru all about this!" Nino grins as she practically drags you back into the Monastery.

Morgan gives you a slight smile, and you nod back at her.

Tomorrow it was time to get down to business.

>And that's it for tonight! Unfortunately, due to weekend plans, the next thread will not run next Saturday! It'll be postponed to either Monday night or Tuesday afternoon!
