You took quite possibly the deepest sleep of your life. So waking up this morning for once was a genuine grind. For the most part though, you felt things were pretty good and well. It was still half-way through FleetFest. And from the sounds of things, things were kicking off entirely. More ships were coming to join the combined Fleet, more Tank Commanders, more visitors, all that good stuff.

And yet, you couldn’t enjoy that for now.

Because right now, you had a call from Lyra. “Elodie Zumwalt.”

“Lyra Caldwell,” you respond back. “Do you need something?” You brush your hair, standing next to Oliver as your crew finishes washing up in the shower.

“Can I ask a favor?” You say yes. “I need you to come by my Office and help me with some files.”

“Don’t you have people for that?” you ask.

“Well… I do,” she says. “But they’re not as good as you are with this tedious logistics stuff. I don’t understand how you can do it.”

“What are you talking about? Logistics is the beating heart of any Academyship. The trade is necessary, vital, and it can be fun! You have to-“

“Yeah, I’m already bored. Sorry.” You roll your eyes. “There’s another reason though that I need you up here.”

“Why?”

She whispers into the phone. “The FleetFest Ball is this Friday and the Captain is shopping for dresses. I need –somebody- to endure the pain with. PLEASE.”

> “Haha. No.”
> “Fine. I’m coming.”

> “Fine. I’m coming.”

You sigh. “Fine, fine. I’m coming.”

“Thank you, good God, thank you!” She hangs up then. To be frank, you’re only doing this because Caldwell devoted herself to the team as well. It only seems fair to repay that.

For now though, it seems you’ll head to work then.

-

-

Caldwell’s office is currently filled with boxes and tubs of files, she hasn’t fully moved in just yet, it seems. Though you do spy some constellation charts, posters of space shuttles and rockets, and even an autographed picture of Tom Hanks? How did that happen? Caldwell lazily sits in her chair, along with her retinue, while the Captain files through dresses on her computer. “Let’s see…” You step inside, blinking. “Oh, Ellie, good to see you! What are you doing here?” asks the Captain.

You salute. “Chief Caldwell asked me to assist her with some files.”

The Captain smiles. “Ah, good, good. Keep up the good work!” She gives a thumbs up to Caldwell, who forces a smile on her face. “Now, tell me, Chief. What do you think of this one?” You step over to the desk, tilting your head. The Captain is sorting through custom dresses online on some generic website. The dress she’s looking at is a sky-blue gown. And obviously far too large for the Captain’s… stature.

Lyra smiles happily. “I think it looks good!”

“That’s what you’ve said the last five times,” says the Captain.

“Because they all look good!” Lyra says quickly. Ah good save.

“Poo.” The Captain grumbles a little.

Denise slides out from behind you. “Why are you searching for dresses, Captain?”

The Captain says, “The FleetFest Ball is this Friday. Unfortunately while our dress uniforms are quite dandy and very flashy, I feel that I should lead by example and wear a dress like the rest of our general studies students do. And in return, Gertrude Pool the Senior Class President will wear a dress uniform. A bit of switch ‘em up solidarity, show the classes there’s not much difference between Naval Studies and General Studies!”

“What about the Hall Monitors?” you ask.

“Oh, they have their own Ball,” says the Captain. “I went there last year. I tell you what, it felt like I was about to get drunk from all the Irish schtick.” Of course.

> Get to work, you’re not here to peruse dresses.

> “You mind if I choose a dress for myself really quickly?”

You kneel down next to the Captain, looking at the dresses. “Did you not go to the Sewing Club first?” you ask.

“I did, but they have a waitlist as long as a basketball player,” says the Captain. “Getting it online is a little bit faster than that. Plus I get priority shipping as a Commander!” Right, right. “Right, what do you think is the best dress for me? This.” The current sky blue gown. “Or this?” A dark blue dress with a nice blue bow on the chest and a white sash. Pretty enough.

“I like the dark blue one,” you say. Caldwell looks over, frowning a little.

“Really?” asks the Captain. She squints at it, skeptical. “Why?”

“Well, for one, it’s actually your size,” you state. The Captain blinks, surprised by your sudden candidness. “And secondly, I think darker colors work better with you, Captain.”

“Hm. I suppose.” The Captain rubs her chin. She snaps her fingers. “Alright, nuts to it. We’ll go for it!” Caldwell sighs in relief as the Captain makes her order. “Should arrive on Thursday. Thanks for your help, Ellie!” She pats your shoulder, grinning. “I should get back to my Office. Lyra, keep up the good work!” With that, the Captain salutes you all, and you all salute back. And then she leaves.

“Ha!” Lyra throws her arms up. “Finally, she leaves! Now I can-“ You kneel by the computer, frowning. “… What?”

“I’m choosing a dress,” you say.

“Oh, not you too!” says Lyra. “Ugh, dresses are so overrated! We have our dress uniforms! They look much better than anything! And besides, I didn’t think of you as a Ball type person.”

“Well-“ …

Oh fuck, she’s right. You never attended your eighth grade dance, you never attended… anything that had dancing in it. You can dance, but you don’t dance in crowds. And the problem when you dance in crowds is because people inevitably turn their attention to you and it gets all embarrassing. Eugh. “Besides, it’s not like we even have dates. It’s okay for the Captain to go alone because she’s the Captain. But us two?” Lyra shakes her head. “As if.”

Denise huffs. “Hmph. Elodie can get any person she wants for a date.”

Lyra blushes a bit, then looks away. “O- oh. W-… Well so can I! In fact, I’ll just go ahead and call someone to go out with me to the Ball!” She quickly pulls out her phone and starts looking through her contacts. “You’ll see! Hehehehe…” Her face starts dropping.

Lyra’s secretary blinks. “Is something wrong?”

“… I don’t have anybody to call,” Lyra mutters.

“Let’s worry about Ball stuff later, Lyra. We need to work anyway.”

“Right, right.” Lyra points to her secretary. “Uh, get me a line with Transcription, see how they’re doing?” The secretary nods, heading to her desk. Lyra points to several tubs full of files and papers. “All those need to be sorted through, they’re logs of entry/exit things and what not. Basically my job now is to oversee everything that goes in and out of the Academyship and it’s really annoying.” You had figured. Part of you though still regrets passing up the job though.

Regardless, you pick up a tub and head over to a spare desk. Between your team and her team, you can get this done in a jiffy.

You and Lyra start heading down the street, followed by your retinues. “My retinue will join me as my crew,” says Lyra. “I must say, going to practice will be exciting! I still don’t know yet what tank I might choose!”

“Didn’t you already decide?” you ask.

“I probably did,” says Lyra. “But there’s so many options regardless. I could even buy my own tank perhaps!” She rubs her chin, thinking on it. “Hm, hm.” She shakes her head. “Ah, regardless. We’ll see when we get there.” She pokes your arm. “So, about the Ball. Are you going or not?”

“I don’t know,” you say. “I never was one for dances.”

“Hm. I had that pegged,” says Lyra. “No date I assume?” You shrug. “Ha, Denise is full of it then.”

“Hey!” Denise pouts furiously. “I was right! Elodie can get anyone she wants!” She slides up next to you. “Isn’t that right, Ellie?”

“Please, Denise. I’m not some kind of sexpot.” You stop, motioning to yourself.

Lyra, her retinue, Denise , Athena, Tessa, Mulcahy, and Hilda all stare at you.

“… what?” you ask.

“Nothing,” says Lyra. “Whatever. I suppose dates will come to you anyway. That’s fine! Me though.” She huffs, placing a hand on her chest. “I will work for my date. That is how it should be! Until then though, we have practice today. So let’s get that out of the way first.” Yes, yes.

All of you manage to arrive at the hangar in good fashion. The hangar however is alive though with the sound of foreign tank commanders all chatting and mingling with your team. You can even spy Griselda happily chatting with Dix Hauser. You walk up to her. “Ellie! Athena, Tessa.”

Athena and Tessa stand around awkwardly next to you. “Griselda.”

Griselda pauses for a few seconds, then says, “I’ll talk to you guys later. Ellie.” Athena and Tessa step away, leaving you with just Lyra. “Me and Dix were just shooting the breeze here. Apparently she thinks the bigger the round, the better.”

Dix huffs. “It’s only true.”

“Coming from someone who mains a Chaffee,” Griselda mutters. Dix gives a friendly flip off back, chuckling. “Actually, Ellie. I wanted you to help me with something. Can you?”

“What do you need help with?” you ask.

“The Joan D’Orleans Women’s Academy team is gonna show up to the hangar in about five minutes. They’ll be letting us study their training for today, give us a chance to rest a little. Do you mind helping them with things if you can?”

“Er. Sure.” You smile happily. “They’re nice people, right?”

Dix looks at Griselda, skeptical. Griselda looks at Dix back, just as skeptical. Griselda says, “Well. They’re very enthusiastic. Don’t worry about it, okay? I’m sure they’d actually love to meet you!” Well, you suppose it would be nice to meet new people. “Uh, Lyra. I’ll come introduce you to your new tank, alright?”

“Excellent!” Lyra happily walks with Griselda and Dix.

Right, pump yourself up then. You bounce a bit, taking a deep breath. They’ll be here in a few minutes. You gotta make a good impression. You are the XO of the team. You have to be strong and command respect! Otherwise they’ll think you’re an idiot.

You and Denise go to stand outside the hangar for a few minutes. And once the few minutes are up, you see their tanks rolling down the streets. A mixture of German and French heavy tanks and… nothing else it seems. Except for the Italian tank destroyers behind them. They stop alongside the road, then pop out of their hatches. Their leader was a tall girl, close to Josephina’s height in fact, with flowing long blonde hair and brown eyes. She looked marvelous. “Bonsoir!” She waves to you. Their uniform was something else though. It was a stark white short surcoat with a black fleur-de-lis on it, on top of a black pleated miniskirt and a dark grey blouse and universally white tights with black jackboots. “So this is one of the Big Three!” She drops down from her King Tiger. “Hohoho…” She rubs her chin, sizing you up. “Very generous body of yours, and judging by your uniform, you must command respect on and off the field as well. Bien.”

You smile nervously. “Elodie Zumwalt, LGA.”

“Eleandor D’Aquitaine.” She takes your hand, then gently kisses it. Denise flinches, shocked b this. Um. Is she trying to be chival- “Enchante. These are my fellow Armourcraft students!” Everyone cheers and whoops happily, except for the girls in the Italian tanks. “Oh, and those are the Genoese. Just ignore them. You shake Eleanor’s hand, smiling politely. “It’s nice to make yours too. I hear we’re set to meet you this weekend, second to last match in the regular season.”

“Oui, oui.” Eleanor pats your head. “Do not fret. We’ll try and make it quick. Nobody likes a slow match where it’s clear who will win, oui?” Is she… being confident? “Regardless, we are excited to show Lafayette Girls Academy the ropes as you Americans say. Joan D’Orleans Woman’s Academy has been practicing Armourcraft for fifty years! And we intend to continue that long tradition of victory and honor!”

“Great! Let me show you inside then,” you say. The three of you walk in. “Have you met Griselda already?”

“We have talked over the phone,” says Eleanor. “Very nice girl, that Griselda. Iris Blackbourne as well is quite nice from what we see of her.”

You say, “And the rest of the team? What do you think?”

“There is potential,” says Eleanor. “Versatile I suppose.” Ah, versatile, the old damning with faint praise. “Irregardless I suppose we should show you a few tricks, no? The Joan D’Orleans tradition demands respect for your foe and honor through glorious single combat!” Yes, yes. “And I suppose we also need our Genoese girls over there to help us occasionally.” The Genoese students stand by the door, chatting amongst themselves in Italian. They look over at you, curious. “Ah, ah, shoo! Shoo!” Eleanor waves them away, and they quickly buzz off elsewhere.

“Is there something wrong with them?” you ask.

“They only speak Italian unfortunately,” says Eleanor. “And also unfortunately we disagree heavily on our doctrines of Armourcraft. Shame, shame. But, God wills it I suppose if we are to work together. Now, what shall we teach you today, Elodie Zumwalt?”

The entire team lines up along with several dozen of the foreign tank commanders. The Junior Historians in particular are excited to see this. They bounce up and down in the crowd, watching as the King Tigers and Panther tanks of JWA line up on the field in orderly fashion. You and Griselda watch from the sidelines, and then see what goes on.

“CHARGE!” screams Eleanor. You hear the incredible wailing of their tanks engines as they speed forth across the grounds. You can hear the French girls all shouting and yelling out war cries in French as they charge their targets, cardboard cutouts of Valiant tanks. They fire off flares and smoke bombs to both obscure the advance and call direct attention to it. And finally, they run roughshod over the cardboard targets with their treads. They simply smash through everything like hot knives through butter.

It’s… barbaric in a sense. And yet it recalls the idea of heavy cavalry running over infantry like grass.

Griselda blinks. “Yeah. Not very creative. But you’d be surprised how often that works.”

“Most teams they face overthink this,” says Meryl Hoffmeister. “They think it’s setting up some kind of deep flank or something else, but in reality their charging is basically their only plan ever. Did they offer to teach you defensive tactics or anything?”

“Well, maybe,” you say.

“Yeah, the basic principle of JWA is honorable combat,” says Meryl. “Which translates into ‘charge’. So they have flanking charges, direct charges, defensive charges, retreating charges, charging charges, resting charges, etc. It’s like Chi-ha-tan except they have the big tanks to compensate for the relatively simplistic tactics of it. Plus, they have a good support base in their Genoese transfer students.”

“So. I’m not learning anything?” you ask.

Eleanor rolls up to you all. She pokes her head out of the hatch, grinning. “What do you think!? There’s nothing that can defeat the charge of heavy tanks!”

“Well, it’s certainly helped you get you where you need to go. I imagine probably not over muddy hills though,” you say quickly.

Eleanor points to you. “If that’s an Agincourt joke, I’ve heard it too many times!”

Rosehip rolls up next to Eleanor in her Crusader. “Hey, D’Aquitaine-san! That show of force was incredible! You should show us some Poiters on how we can in-Crecy our own offense potential! HAHAHA!” She speeds off in a cloud of dust.

“Lousy anglophile!” Eleanor yells back at her.

You press your lips together, trying not to laugh. “Well, it was a good show of force as she says, Eleanor.”

“Right?!” Eleanor huffs, going back to her haughty status. “Anyway, I suppose it seems you already know the ways of the honorable cavalry charge, judging by your skill in executing the art of the Shimada-ryuu. So tell you what, I will instead help your crew out with their strength, and challenge them to face me in an honorable bout of bench pressing weights!”

Stack shoves everyone out of the way. “What’s this I hear about Frenchies wanting to lift!?” Oh dear.

> + 15 STRENGTH TO ALL CREWMEMBERS

“… my arms…” Ingrid rubs her arms, sore and incredibly tired. Everyone lies around, dead exhausted and sore from all the lifting and squatting they had to do. Well, everyone except Stack. Stack and Eleanor lock hands, pushing against each other, glaring into each other’s eyes.

“You have the fire of the lion in you, Texan!” says Eleanor. “But France is stronger!”

“You guys gave up during World War II!” Stack mocks.

“Gave up but never stopped fighting!” Eleanor snaps back.

So. This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

You all settle down for some dinner, chicken and rice with some scrambled eggs as well, nothing too special. It’s already getting late out it seems as well. You ask the girls, “How does everyone feel?”

“I can’t even feel my arms,” says Ingrid as she shakily eats her food. “How do people lift so much?”

“Don’t you have to lift to be a professional baseball player?” asks Stack. “Come on, don’t be a pussy!”

Josephina frowns. “Now, Stack. Don’t mock Ingrid. She is trying, oui? At least she did it.”

“Yeah,” says Ingrid. “I guess. I didn’t want to end up like Zumzum’s fan club over there.” She points behind you. There you see all of your fanclub members splayed out on the Challenger tank. In order to try and win your respect for the day, they also tried the weightlifting exercises with Eleanor D’Aquitaine. Unfortunately, they did not survive. At least they tried though. “Are your parents coming into town, Josephina?”

“Oui,” says Josephina. “They’ll be here for Labor Day. What about you?”

“My Mom’s already found a hotel to stay in,” says Ingrid. “She’ll be here for a couple of months.”

Stack smirks. “Looks like I’m the only person here who doesn’t have to worry about parents following me to my Academyship!”

“Nah, just your sisters,” Ingrid mutters. Stack pouts, looking down at her plate. Ingrid smiles at you though. “Ellie. Maybe tomorrow you can come meet my Mom. She’s a little on the rough side but she’s really hospitable once you get to know her. Just don’t mention the DH.”

“Ah, he’s working concessions at CitiField,” says Ingrid. “He’s one of those guys that goes around yelling ‘Lemonade! Lemonade!’” She shrugs. “He’s powerful though, he could lift you up easy. You really gotta have strength to carry around a basket full of lemonades for three hours straight.”

Stack huffs. “I could do that easy.”

“Could you do it in the blistering hot sun while going up and down stairs all day with no breaks?” asks Ingrid. Stack pauses, then looks away. “Didn’t think so.”

Winona giggles a little. “Got you there, Stack. I could imagine you doing that though.”

That actually does sound amazing, you and Stack together, facing the best of the best in the Tankery world. You’d love to have Winona, Josephina, and Ingrid with you but… well, life takes us all in different directions you suppose. For now, you’ll settle with Stack. “Y’all hear that? Me and Ellie are gonna be the best tankers there ever were!”

“Yeah, and I’m the Queen of Sealand,” says Ingrid.

“Have you been talking with Sealand again?” asks Winona.

Ingrid rolls her eyes, then looks down. “Ah! Winona!” Ingrid picks up Cuddles the snake out of her lap. “Stop letting your snake out of his tank!” She hands him back to Winona gently.

Winona huffs. “Hmph. Rude.”

Right. What should you do before bed?

“So, Lyra. How’d today’s training go? I heard you were using the Panther tank,” you say.

Lyra and company all sit against each other, looking completely exhausted. “This Tanking is harder than it looks!” says Lyra. “I have to admire you for sticking with it for so long, Ellie!” Aw, thanks. “Still though.” Lyra stands up, dusting herself off. “It was a blast regardless. Let me introduce you to my retinue though. They’ll be serving as my crew. This is my secretary and loader Carina Barrie.” Carina waves a hand, smiling at you behind thick glasses. “My Transcription Chief and driver Ursula Ichikawa.” Ursula nods, grunting quietly. “And finally my gunner Vela Kosminsky.” Vela says hello, grinning happily at you.

“Nice to meet you all,” you say simply.

Lyra says, “I’m not decided yet on which tank to use though. I hear Griselda’s new tank is coming in tomorrow. And I’d like to see what it is first.” Fair enough. “Although, Ellie. I gotta say, I was being genuine when I said I admire your dedication to Tankery.”

“Oh?”

“Sports in general is quite… well, I’m not sure. It’s weird. Some sports you’re into, some you’re not. Sometimes you imagine you can do better than the million dollar athlete they put on the field. Here though?” Lyra says, “It’s tough. But I feel like I could really get better at it.”

“That’s Tankery,” you say. “A lot of contradictions exist in it.”

“So I hear. I’ve been watching the Ken Burns documentary to psyche myself up for it, plus the history aspect too I guess.” Lyra shrugs. “But regardless, Elodie Zumwalt, I feel confident. Perhaps I can even surpass you.”

“You will try,” you say with a smirk. She gently punches your arm, grinning smugly.

“Hey. You need a rival around here. Can’t be a top player all the time,” says Lyra.

You sigh. Fair enough.

"That's what Iris is for."

I just realized something, back at GuP:LGA thread 8 there was this line.
>She nods. “Sure.” She looks back at the Naval Studies group. “Slade, Jane, Dana, Josie, come with me. I want a team of Naval Studies Rescue with me, in case we got any injuries. Caldwell, I want your team with me too.”

Was this Lyra or was there another Caldwell in the school at the time?

Caldwell for the most part was a generic name back in LGA1. You'll notice it a lot if you keep reading through.
>>
>>1611815
That has got to be a very unfortunate family name to be using for a secondary character at this point ain't it?
>>
>>1611821
Think of it like Smith. Its everywhere.

Probably. But things change I suppose.
