/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back, partisans of all stripes, to the 88th installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! I'm Wong, your host, and today you'll start out as Heinrich "Caesar" Merrow, currently masquerading as an Avalonian knight by the name of Sir Gaius Wesker. Also, after some stuff, you'll be Roarke because you have negotiations to do!

Last time, the tournament reached its conclusion and the two sisters, Irina and Rosita, were reunited. Hooray for closure! Today, however, we start off back on the Duke's battleship, in the private bedroom of one Countess Tabitha Roosevelt...

“I don't get it.” Countess Tabitha Roosevelt, rider of the Engeler, Paladin of Avalon, pulls off the simgame helmet you convinced her to buy and shakes out her long, dark hair, “Sir Wesker, my ribbons, please.”

By now, you know how to fix her hair for her, putting it back in what Captain Oda would describe as 'twintails'. It's a self-explanatory style, “What isn't there to get? You won. Rather...shockingly easily since it's your first time.”

“As if any other outcome could be expected of me! My Engeler might be able to engage from kilometers away, but I know full well that range is not a defense in and of itself, I am adept at avoidance when I must be.” She smiles proudly. “No, it isn't the game itself...this...hell of bullets genre is rather relaxing once you realize the trick of pattern memorization. It's the plot. The protagonist is an oppressive bully and her witch companion is a thief. The temple priestess, in particular, seems to spend most of her time destroying her competition, ruining parties, and crushing foreign religions when she isn't starting fights for no reason as part of her self-assigned crusade for justice and order.”

“They were trying to put out the sun, Lady Roosevelt.” You gently correct her, “It would have made things very inconvenient for everyone.”

“I interpreted it more as permanent magical night. Besides, the sisters were vampires. To them, the day was inconvenient and they were acting for the sake of their own survival. No organism can be despised for acting in its own defense...not even people. Not even our enemies. To fight without hatred, to recognize the necessity of battle for both participants, is to fight gracefully and nobly. At least, that's what my father told me.” She smiles wistfully, “You must miss your father too, do you not?”

“Not so often, he's still...” You cut off, abruptly, “I'm sorry.”

“Don't be. I'm glad your father is alive, he raised a fine son.” She smiles at you.

“The later ones where the gatekeeper girl is the main protagonist are the best, honestly. Although the wolf tengu had a cult devoted to her in the mid-twenty-first century on Terra according to what I learned at...” You stop short of saying 'the Academy', “During my education, I mean.” You're trying to change the topic, and you suspect momentarily that she's aware of it.

“Of course, who could ever forget Hong Meiling? At any rate, what bothers me the most is how inconclusive these fights are. Is nobody taking them seriously?” She frowns at the screen. You talked her into getting consoles for the pair of you to keep her from getting bored on the ship, and to give her an excuse not to leave it. Being on that Tern with her as the Bluegills manhandled it was...an ugly scene. It's not hard to figure out why, of course. Someone as powerful as she is, expecting to die or be captured by an enemy she should have been able to defeat with a basic infantry mech, must have done something harsh to that towering ego of hers...she's refused to ride in a Tern since, using the Engeler for even minor chores. You've had to find excuses not to use your Swordfish 'Cavalier', worried the UJCIDF will recognize it, “Honestly, the vampires remind me of two of my fellow Paladins a little.” She adds.

“I've heard of plenty of duels between ace pilots where both pilots survived. Admiral Starwind is famous for deliberately incapacitating mecha and leaving the pilots alive, which is probably why he's in the position he's in now. I suppose Gensokyo is similar, and some youkai don't seem like death would really slow them down.” You shrug nonchalantly, “...Is it my turn? I have other games, you know.”

This is the same future where Berserk finished and became a national treasure. For all we know, ZUN kept making his games until the day alchahol claims his liver. They say the small, petrified stone grants one great skill with trumpets.
>>
“Such an impatient knight.” The Countess harrumphs at your suggestion of taking turns, then frowns at the helmet, “Admiral Starwind...he's up to something. That whole stunt proves it. He must have chosen those two pilots for a reason to come and save us.”

You blink at her behind your glasses, “Why?” Well, YOU know who they are, and YOU know that they were likely sent precisely because they don't get along...but she doesn't need to hear that.

She glowers, “They were large Jovian striders that don't match the profiles of any of the common vanguard units the Gas Knights...sorry, I shouldn't use that term around you...employ. Thus they're likely from that special forces unit that works like their version of our Paladins, the ones who brought down the Gerin...and the Berenger. I still have no idea how they managed to defeat Duchess Carnegie. He used them for a reason, to send a message to the Jovians...and to us, to remind us who was in control. I refuse to believe the gesture was anything but calculated and deliberate. I shot that man's mech's arm off and he didn't even flinch towards cover, he's a cool one and no mistake about it.” She wrinkles her cute little nose, "You're smiling at me. Stop it. No, don't stop smiling, stop doing that face like you think I'm wrong but are trying to humor me."

You don't stop smiling, “Anyone can get unlucky, even a Duchess.” You feel a sudden sense of nervousness, “What's wrong with calling them Gas Knights around me, my Countess?”

Her face reddens slightly, “Y-your countess? That isn't...that's not exactly proper mode of address, Sir Wesker!” She looks sharply away, “Your Ladyship or Countess will do splendidly. It's not as if I mind, or anything, it's just...just a bit familiar.”

You bow your head in apology, “As you wish, Countess.”

She smiles an awkward, lopsided smile, “Perhaps I'm asking too much of you. Very well, you have my permission to call me Tabitha, but only when we're alone! Do it in front of others and I'll scold you! I don't want to call them Gas Knights because you're Jovian, aren't you?” She winks, “You can't fool me. This place, this tournament, is a hotbed of Jovian mercenaries and deserters, the scrapings of unjust wars and the corruption endemic to their system. I won't ask for your history, you told me you're here because you wanted to protect someone...and by the Lady, I believe you. However it happened, you're my Knight now, and I'll be damned if I see anything untoward happen to you.”

She ruffles your hair, giving you the slightly uncomfortable feeling of being a puppy, “...And that would be the case even if I wasn't even more short on vassals than I previously was. Sir Magnarus Letholdus, alas, takes his debt of life to the Pirate King extremely seriously. For better or worse, he has pledged his blade to the Iron Kestrels. I have managed to, at great expense, secure the release of Dame Morgan Gray, she should rejoin us soon. Moreover, due to their spoils from the battle of 16-Psyche, the Kestrels have many strider frames and have espoused that perhaps they do not necessarily need her Cavalier. Prior to the acquisition of your machine, it was considered the most powerful Cavalier, even if among pilots she falls short of His Grace the Duke's Hector Van Damme, considered the finest of his household knights.”

Your blood runs a bit colder at that, as you rack your brains trying to remember whether or not the commander of the 16-Psyche Avalonian forces ever saw your face. You can't remember, but you feel like if she did it was in passing. Loriette, on the other hand...Loriette knows you, you're damned if she ever sees you without a helmet in the way. “I have a lot to live up to...Tabitha.” You remark, nonchalantly. Part of you is a bit amazed that you can be this cool in a girl's room, alone with her, playing simgames...but another part of you recognizes just how sharp you are from the dangerous situation you're in. You adjust your sunglasses, before you catch a glimpse of yourself doing it in the reflective surface of the door. You weren't aware how Roarke-like the gesture was until you did it.

“You will do fine, I have every confidence in you, and you will receive the very best instruction. The Duke has expressed an interest in giving you a few lessons and that is...very rare. Honestly, I rather distrusted him at first, the Rothschilds sided against the Lady during the Revolution, hence why their illegitimate son who betrayed his family to support the new Queen and the Lady is now their family head...but serving under him, I've come to realize he's a good man, albeit one who is being rather over-dramatic about some of the hard decisions he's had to make recently. He's under a lot of stress, and the situation with Bradamante is a major cause of it. You see, he's been forced to...” She stops talking and glares at the unobtrusive speaker for the PA as it crackles to life.

Same as ever I see. Honestly, she does seem the more reasonable sort and may side with us if we are reasonable. Caesar does seem to be growing, and I think if worst comes to worst would have learned from those around him that there are others and that he isn't alone. But for now, solo mission.

“Countess, His Grace the Duke Eustace de Rothschild-Beauchamps summons you to the bridge. Turpin has returned with word from Avalon.” A rather obsequious-sounding male voice rings out.

“Inform him I will make all haste thence.” The Countess snaps, waiting for the sound of the PA turning off before she adds, “Remember my dislike for the protagonist of the bullet hell game? You are about to meet its source. Come, Sir Wesker.” She stands up, brushes out her skirts, and strides out into the hall with the air of someone taking the garbage out, accomplishing an unpleasant task as quickly as possible.

You put your helmet on and try to keep a respectful distance behind her. You're smart enough to have picked up on Avalonian mannerisms quickly, after all, “Is Turpin a Paladin? I know your whole theme comes from Charlemagne's Twelve Peers, but Turpin wasn't one of them, right?”

“Quite right. Turpin is emphatically not one of us.” The Countess glowers, “The Lady does not leave her forest. Perhaps she cannot, she has been there my entire life. Turpin acts as her hands and voice outside of the Avalon system itself. She has not undergone the genetic modifications we receive...but rumor has it she possesses something similar, and has ever since the Lady took her in.”

Eeeeh.. sssorta? He would likely stick to Naomi, but at the same time, I think he'd understand well enough that the dead are dead. He may be his father in many ways, but he is certainly not bereft of friends. Perhaps, that will be the one way he surprasses his father; by simply moving on.
And of course the boat will always loom. Either by sea or somehow air, there will be travel and something happening during it.

The two of you beat a hasty path to the bridge, where a strange tableau awaits you. You don't really like the setup of an Avalonian ship's bridge. You're accustomed to Solar System vessels, where the captain sits at a central chair with a view of the entire bridge, but Avalonian bridges always seem to be overdoing it a little with the raised central dais on which the captain is enthroned along with his seniormost officers, as if to call as much attention as possible away from the surrounding rings of busy crew. They feel like throne rooms, and this one has a distinct feel of a revolution brewing, something where people get burned alive.

The double-column of Avalonian infantry in their heavy armor is your first clue, standing behind and to either side of a woman. Their armor is grey, unadorned, plain and functional, and the mono-bayonets on their hefty rifles seem a lot less ornate than typical Avalonian fare. The woman, too, is far from ostentatious. Slim and not particularly tall, she's clad in a black dress and matching wimple that reminds you, apart from its coloration, somewhat of a Reformed Catholic nun. It both fits tightly and manages to convey an expression of absolute, untouchable modesty. The woman turns, and smiles...and for just a moment, your impression of her breaks apart. That face is incredibly pretty. Not just put together well, with all the components to be hot, but genuinely interesting and lovely to look at. It gives off an impression of kindness, of approachability. She seems like the sort of person who compulsively feeds animals and is always kind to children. She curtsies, and speaks in a sweet, rather quiet voice, “Welcome, brave daughter of the Roosevelt clan. So pleased you could join us, I was waiting for you.”

The second she looks away the Duke rolls his eyes and makes a face. “Get on with it. How fares Bradamante?”

The Countess also makes a face, but doesn't make much effort to hide it. If Turpin notices, she shows no sign of it.

“Excellently, O stalwart hero of the new age. The Lady is pleased beyond reckoning with your service in discovering and retrieving her. Songs shall be written about your great battle to save her from the Jovians and pirates alike. Why, I have coined a verse or two myself!” She smiles sweetly.

The Duke and the Countess both frown simultaneously, and so do you behind your helmet. So, Bradamante really is Naomi, not as if you didn't already know that. “Excellent can mean many things.” The Countess points out, crossing her arms over her chest.

“As astute as always. Her prowess in battle has grown considerably, according to the simulations I ran with her during our voyage home, and she is beginning to display some signs of being able to recall the Lady's knowledge when conscious...but the illusions she has created to shield herself from reality run deep, and they have not yet cracked. Perhaps a sharper lesson would bring her back to reality...although that runs the risk of fracturing her psyche entirely.” That sweet facade might as well have just dissolved, you're thoroughly with the Countess in her assessment now.

“It would be a pity if I was ordered to execute you for the harm that would do.” The Duke remarks, very seriously.

Turpin laughs merrily, covering her mouth with one hand, “Oh your Grace, always such a wit! I shall handle her situation as gently as if she was my very daughter! After all, she is more than just Avalon's hope and Avalon's future, she is the future of this entire galaxy, of humanity itself. She has the potential to...well, you already know that. Mustn't run my mouth!” She waggles a remonstrating finger, then snaps her fingers, “Oh, of course, I almost forgot! Your orders! Yes, you are to proceed with Countess Roosevelt and her forces to one of the remaining gates...” She reaches into her sleeve with a flourish, and draws out a piece of paper. Real paper, thick, cream-colored, expensive-looking paper, “The details are here. Your homecoming is nigh, Duke Eustace de Rothschild-Beauchamps, and for you as well, Countess Tabitha Roosevelt. You two shall receive the reprieve you so richly deserve.”

“...And what of...my apologies, your Grace, I spoke out of turn.” The Countess gives a short bow, seeing that the Duke was about to speak when she interrupted.

“I rather suspect our question was the same! We two? Shouldn't it be we three? Countess le Kennedy is hardly worth discounting, she fought gallantly for our cause!” The Duke sounds his age for once.

Turpin bows deeply, her serenity unruffled, “All the answers you seek are contained in your orders.”

The Duke steps down from the dais, takes the paper, unfolds it, and reads it. He reads it again, “Sir Wesker, arrest her.”

Oh I don't mind her looks. She is a horrible person who was likely the girl from way back then and wants to mind break Naomi horribly.

You draw out your shortsword, and twist the handle, extending it into its spear form and assuming a fighting stance, “Yes, my Duke!” You bellow. Avalonian mannerisms, you've had time to observe and practice them.

Her guards turn and level their rifles at you as one. You prepare to spring into the line of bristling bayonets, “I can't promise to kill everyone who comes between me and fulfilling my orders, but whichever of you wants to step forward...his death, I guarantee!”

Turpin simply smiles and gestures for her guards to stand down, “As you wish, but these are the Lady's words, not mine.” Her guards instantly lower their weapons, as precise as clockwork.

“They cannot be. This is...this is unacceptable. Barbaric, even. She is a Paladin, Turpin, one of us!” The Duke's voice is not loud, but it's hard as steel, and his hands are dangerously close to his swordhilts, “She fought for Avalon, and you ask us to...”

“...To do what? Are you suggesting that the Lady is betraying Loriette le Kennedy?” Turpin's sweet-natured mirth is gone in a second, her expression cold as space itself, “That, your Grace, would be blasphemy. This action, too, is needed to create the new age we all desire. All things in their proper place. Why, it's not as if she is in more danger than the rest of us, she may even outlive us all. Would that not be ironic?” Her smile returns.

The Duke thrusts the paper out towards the Countess, who ascends the dais to stand beside him and read it. Her face blanches, “I...I didn't...Your Grace, I swear I had nothing to...to do with this...”

“I know.” He replies.

“This...this isn't what I wanted. Not like this...” The Countess shakes her head vigorously, looking horrorstruck, “Why?”

“She is not what Avalon needs. Twice, now, she has failed. First against the Jovian superweapon on Paley's World, and now to the leader of the Solar pirates. We cannot afford a third failure. Some birds are simply not meant to fly. We do not know how long Bradamante will take to reach maturity. Until that time, she will pilot a new Anseis, it should help ensure she gains combat experience while simultaneously preventing undue questions. A thirteenth Paladin is dramatic, but it does not suit our needs. As for the Gerin, the Lady desires another Paladin from the Solar System.” Turpin's smile does not waver in the slightest.

“I refuse.” The Duke says point-blank, “Even if she is to be removed from the Paladins, I refuse. If your influence has somehow blocked the allocation of resources to pay her ransom...then I will offer up my own. If they are insufficient to tempt Starwind, I'll challenge him to a duel. He's unlikely to say no, it's not in his nature to back away from a direct challenge to his strength as a pilot whether or not he's engaged in dalliance with the Countess Kennedy. His position, after all, comes from strength. There is no love lost between myself and Duchess Maria Carnegie, but I am honor-bound to keep her students safe.

Turpin bows her head, “That is your choice, but I would advise against it. The Lady's orders are final, just as her instructions were in the event of you finding one of her clones, as you so ably did. Whether you won or lost, it would be the end of you as a Paladin. Insubordinate or in captivity, you would no longer be useful to our glorious cause. There were, if you recall, reservations about assigning you the Oliver in the first place, no? Perhaps it's for the best after all. I'm sure Duchess Apollonia, your wife, would be a more than suitable replacement. I'm sure someone can be found to take care of your children. Twins, correct? How blessed you are.” Her smile is too sweet, positively cloying, somehow overripe.

I follow the adage of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. If we are going to rescue Naomi, we will need all the help we can get and every revolting Paladin is one less we have to face and one more who helps us.
>>
>>1606314
Trying to smuggle not only the Lady's clone but a duchess and her two children is going to be near impossible, besides Roarke doesn't like Eustace so him joining the Kestrels doesn't seem likely.
>>
>>1606331
Roarke doesn't like Eustace for the shit he pulled more than anything else. We also didn't really like Oda to start either. And taking the lady's clone is going to sound every damn alarm on the planet. She is THE lynche pin in their plans. The kids and duchess are hostages, true, but not that big.
You act as though stealing a duchess is a bigger crime than taking something akin to the child of their god.
>>
>>1606346
Oda didn't pull shit we didn't like though, we just thought he was a weirdo. And I'm not saying that spiriting a duchess away is harder, just that the more people you have with you when trying to sneak off a planet the harder it gets and the more likely it is for something to go wrong.
>>
>>1606346

System, not planet. Avalon is the name of the system. It has two habitable worlds and an outer gas giant.
>>
>>1606331
>>1606346
>>1606362

Generally I've seen the reaction to Eustace being somewhat neutral with a strong side of "we're going to steal Naomi back." It's not like Roarke to get absolutely outraged over someone kidnapping someone he doesn't know. Sticking his thumb in the Lady's eye by stealing her clone away as vengeance against the Green Men makes more sense than a personal feud.
>>
>>1606362
the moment we grab Naomi, we're going to have every goddamn Paladin and Chevalier Avalon has after our ass. There is no sneaking away.
>>
Welp, missed a bit. Looks like we're stepping into a really big oven.
>>
>>1606368
My fault there. Point remains, but the scale is bigger.
>>1606362
A tern or vessle that could carry people can carry more than one, and as is, it seems Eustace's people are loyal to him over the lady. He could likely shepard her away easy enough. Hiding will not be a option once we get Naomi though. We will be making a mad break for it and hope it works out. If Eustace and Tabitha join us on our flight alongside his forces, then that makes things easier.
>>
>>1606375
Being fine with mind controlling someone seems like something Roarke is really against since he loves freedom.
>>
>>1606405
Eustace does not seem fine by it, at all. It's less a case of liking it, and more it being necessary for the cause and also his orders. He has gone in lengths griping about it and only doing it cause it's 'the right thing'. Is it a dick move? Yes, but context is important here.

There's a muted click as the Countess draws her sidearm faster than you can blink, but the Duke is faster still, batting her arm down. His face is an unreadable mask. He looks at the paper again, “This is, unquestionably, from the Lady.”

“But your Grace...” The Countess protests.

“Our orders are clear, even if our honor is muddied.” His voice is toneless, “Stand down, Sir Wesker.”

“Oh, this new knight of Countess Roosevelt's is a fierce one, isn't he?” Turpin turns her gaze to you, “My, he's not afraid of my guards at all.”

“I've fought worse.” You remark. You have. Clemmy's lessons have made sure of that. One of her favorite methods is, on nights when she isn't with Roarke, to kick open your door in the middle of the night and attack you with a wooden practice sword. She also told you to be grateful it was a wooden one.

“Do give me a full report on how you acquired him, whenever you find the time. After all, there is still the matter of the Gerin.” She talks over your head to the Countess, flashing her a smile. “Perhaps he and I will work together more closely in the future, hmm? As for Loriette...”

The Countess hits her. The sound of the slap rings throughout the bridge, painfully loud. She puts her hips into it, too, sending Turpin stumbling off balance into the arms of one of her guards, “COUNTESS Loriette Marie le Kennedy, noble of Lorien, Paladin of Avalon, true rider of the Anseis, rightful heir to the Kennedy lands, student of Duchess Maria Carnegie...who you seem in no hurry to replace...and survivor of my vengeance. You will address her appropriately in the future.” She crosses her arms.

Turpin staggers to her feet, rubbing her reddening cheek. Her wimple is off-kilter, and a strand of pale pink hair is momentarily visible before she tucks it back beneath, “Your Grace...” She says stiffly, ignoring the Countess and focusing on the Duke, “I am weary from my journey and shall retire to my quarters.”

Roarke doesn't believe in orders being more important than what he views as right. Sure you can understand the situation he's in, but that doesn't mean you can't say its bullshit and he should have fought against it and rebelled like Roarke did.

To be fair, the three avalonians larpers said many times that they still were against the Lady(or at least didn't care about what was going to happen to her) many times. And the fact that there is an Queen/Lady faction split in Avalon isn't that new.

>>
>>1606467
I'm not really wanting to be an edgelord here... But installing new memories into a unwilling victim isn't worse than killing someone... I mean, they still are going to be alive, aren't they?
I know that we are speaking about Naomi, but that doesn't change the fact that to Avalon she was an enemy soldier... And why shouldn't you refrain of killing your enemy combatants?

And more... Some threads ago there was all that talk about "Wouldn't you sacrifice an enemy to revive one of your national heros? What about sacrificing an enemy to revive a GOD?"

The Duke can act all angsty and severely depressed as he wants, buit this is still war and Naomi was still an enemy combatant that wasn't going to hesitate on killing him if she had a chance... He isn't obligated on not mindbreaking his enemies.

You put your spear back into shortsword mode with a decisive, metallic click, hang it back on your belt, and shake your head with absolute contempt.

“Get out of my sight.” The Duke sounds as if he's making at least an effort to be polite and not start the bloodbath, “There's a difference between doing what's necessary and delighting in your own power, I hope you learn this before it becomes your downfall.”

Turpin curtsies, smiles at you in particular, and leaves with a spring in her step, trailed by her guards. The Duke waits until the door has shut to draw his swords and throw them like twin spears, the mono-edged blades lodging themselves in the metal, “Damn her!”

“Twice over, for making me pity the cripple!” Huffs the Countess, “At least my cousin will have her pirate to keep her happy. Contemptible bitch, acting as if I should kiss her feet for being handed a victory in a private contest by an unwanted outsider. Everything about this is wrong.”

“It has to be, for you to have to pretend this hard not to care about your cousin being left behind.” The Duke remarks, then smiles apologetically at you, “Superbly done, Sir Gaius. You were a model of chivalry.”

“Yes, indeed, you showed obedience, valor, and even restraint. This is exactly why I can depend on you.” The Countess smiles warmly at you.

You feel a little tongue-tied. What would the Admiral do?

...Meanwhile, on the Rhinehawk, silver-tongued Roarke Starwind makes Fatima Ahmad blush as red as the Martian sands by complimenting her cooking, prompting her to offer him a second helping.

“Thank you, my lady.” You eventually stammer, “I do my best.”

“And you succeed.” She replies, “Take the rest of the day off, Gaius, you've earned it.” She ponders momentarily, “Hm, if you're going to the colony, perhaps I should go with you? I'm sure there are a few bookstores I haven't found yet.”

You nod.

It depends on how we position the negotiations. If we do these first before the lori one, then the lori negotiations are not needed. It becomes a case of 'we are SSL and thus she is already in custody and staying here. Same with any hostages or captives we get.'
Main events tend to be at the end of auctions. We can drain resources through other means.

>>
>>1607127
Terra will likely be something to deal with in the future. In either case, we do need to take down the Green Lady and get as much as we can from this war. Neutrality, or at least true neutrality will hurt us in the short term. We need resources, access, and not worrying about multiple fronts and joining Avalon is a no go. ESPECIALLY after this shit with pinky priestess.
>>
>>1607150
>and get as much as we can from this war
Well the best way to do that is go 100% pirate mode and loot every single thing we can and fight as much as possible.
>>
>>1607160
On paper, that is true, but the issue is holding onto and properly claiming it. A thing you must remember is we are not human resource heavy. We have our aces, but our forces are small in general. Sure we can aid some stuff, but we have been sort of a side issue in the grand scheme. Our lack of manpower makes holding things like planets or bigger things much tougher, and trading those things for stuff we need becomes a problem too if they cut us off.
We could take down hundreds of machines and have them made into amazing machines, but they mean nothing if we lack the man power.
With allies, options open up, securing our spoils become easier, and we can be insulated from others who might attack us mid conflict to try and take us out.

It isn't hard to get away from the Countess on Auditorium, surprisingly. She seems quite immersed in her books. You make your way to a public park, and find one of those run-down corners nobody ever seems to know what to do with, that inevitably become a home to weeds and grass.

You still have a PC, but what the Countess doesn't know is that it's a new one you bought on Auditorium. Your old one, with its list of contacts, is buried here where no inquisitive Avalonian can wonder why you have a bunch of SOUL pilots, Admiral Starwind, Captain Oda, and even General Hatsheput...who is quite free with her personal number...worst, though, you have your dad in this phone. You dig it up from under the roots of a bush and some artfully-placed moss using the tip of your shortsword.

Moreover, there's a message from him. It takes you a moment to process. You haven't spoken to each other since you ran away to join SOUL. Your hands tremble...and you hit the contact for the Admiral, ignoring your dad's missive for now. You focus entirely on that, giving the Admiral every scrap of information you gathered thus far, including your fears that something has been done to Naomi and including every jot of information you have as to what it is. It takes guts to tell him that Avalon, not her comrade Paladins, but Avalon itself, is betraying Loriette...even if you tell him firmly you won't be able to give more details. You only have a few minutes, after all. Eventually, you hit send, when you can think of no more details.

You notice the message notification from your father one more time, and try to work up your nerve.

Believe me, I know, but of the ones I had PLANNED a lot fit better for Roarke. Generation 2 has what I call the "Forgotten Realms Problem", which goes like this.

You have some big dick NPC around. Only he's not opposed to you or a jerk, he's supposedly your cool bro who's on your side. He's super powerful and has an unbeatable network of spies, assassins, and informers. Let's call him Elminster. So the question is, if a major threat arises...why isn't Elminster dealing with it? Inevitably, you're only handling the problems Elminster can't be bothered with in between casually oneshotting Pit Fiends and magebonering bar wenches. It takes a lot of the narrative oomph out of the story. Now, there ARE ways around this, situations that can't be touched, but Roarke is essentially Elminster here, because so long as he's alive any big galaxy-crushing threat has to deal with him barring a tragic death or true high-octane escalation.

Like I said, gen 2 is possible but has a lot of potential problems. "We'll see", basically.
>>
>>1607375
I always thought that after this whole thing with the Lady and Avalon Roarke would have also solved his Fairchild problem which would take out most of his dissenters with her. Or at least the ones with significant pull. Or hell, even make most of them go to ground to avoid getting fucking pulped by the fists of an angry Roarke and that it would transition into a sort of filler state of "boring" stuff to do while timeskipping into Roarke growing old and his kids taking over, which then brings out all sorts of new problems with heirs, and people seeing an opportunity to fuck with the realm so to speak since Roarke is objectively on his way out due to his age.

Naturally this results in a huge final confrontation where Roarke comes out of retirement for one last big battle and punches so hard he retroactively beats the entire family of his enemies to death through time itself. Or he just explodes his own heart while exploding the everything of whatever his fist touches.

Of course, I ain't got shit on actual questing so I won't act like my ideas are feasible or even good.
>>
>>1607375
Why not make it based around that? Rorke personally deals with the really big problems, his crack teams of children deal with the big but not big enough problems both because Roarke isn't needed to deal with it and to prove themselves. You could even have NPCs like the cucked SOUL cat take part as Jagan-esque characters.

That could just be my stilted view of it though. I've always wanted a quest/game where whoever you play is pretty much just another character and not special or important compared to the NPCs. Only Banished has ever really done something like that.
>>
>>1607375
Plenty of ways to get around that, Roarke gets captured on a raid and is gone for years or missing. An enemy blasts their system's gate as a last fuck you to Roarke for raiding them. Write it as a slice of life with Roarke settling down to raise a family and the crazy adventures they get into. You know the usual.
>>
>>1607375
Eesh, yeah, I can understand that. The plus side is that Roarke is less bullshit in general. Don't get me wrong, he still is bullshit, but 'human fighter specced well' bullshit and not 'blessed by the god of magic with fancy magic eating flames and being a goddamn wizard.'. Sure he is horrifying, but it's the sort of thing that can be emulated, like Simon. He'd have more pull and power, but unleashing the Roarke option would be akin to unleashing the megabass. Not done if REALLY needed.
In the end though, the potential for other Roarkes popping up is possible, and technology is always advancing forward. New metallurgy upping the strength of armor, improved hydraulic systems boosting the average, and some of those roarke secrets coming out one way or another.
>>
>>1607375
You could have Roarke's children trying to become the one most fit to sit on the throne when the time comes by following Roarke's orders in far-away places while he is at the capital reigning over stuff in a macro-scale.

OR

You could also jump to Roarke's death and tell the tale of the lineages of his six waifus dealing with who will become the next king.

an in terms of threats, we could be dealing with corruption, corporativism, Jovian betrayal, islamist fanatics, Avalon leftovers, new pirate bands, CUSS wannabe starting another big war... Or even a drone army being controlled by trans-humanistic psychos.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a secret conclave of greenman out there who just warped into unknow space when the war began and never looked back.
>>
>>1607375
Roarke doesn't need to solve every problem himself. Kings don't sortie out for every skirmish, and generals don't personally supervise every battle.

Besides, I doubt after Fairchild and the Green Lady are taken care of, very many situations are going to need his intervention.

You almost do it, you almost hit Read Message...but then...

“Nyeeeeh!” You quickly turn the PC off, throw it back into the box, and bury it again. You can make as many excuses as you want. That it would be demoralizing, take up valuable time, or anything else...but you know the truth deep down. You're frightened. Your father's wrath is a terrifying thing, but worse, far worse, is the idea that someday you might have to protect Naomi from him even if he hasn't touched a mech in decades.

Your father frightens you more than facing the Duke and Admiral Starwind at the same time. It's an entirely rational fear.

Hey Wong, have a Knight:
I think that after Lori, Tabitha is the second more probably one to have more space able Knights... But you should had something in mind when giving them the rollerskatters... So I kept them for loyalty to the original concept.

In the end, its Ulfbeth-mod to Knights that doesn't really solve their space problem but gives them an edge that may be enough to increase their survivability against more space able jovian mechs.

I don't need this particular advice, it's already all been considered. There are ways to get around anything, the point is that it's less interesting. Gen 2 is a definite MAYBE and nothing will change that. There's a bunch of stuff going on that you don't even know about yet.

>situations where Roarke isn't needed

This objectively straight-up bores me. The whole "this other guy handles the really big problems" is a trope I hate. Like I said, there are ways around this problem, but the entire shape of the galaxy might be different by then and, honestly, I NORMALLY run and consume fantasy rather than /m/ stuff, so REIGN has a lot more of my weird ideas. There's a lot of quest left, and pivotal people who haven't even shown up at this point.

>>
>>1607632

Big immediate pros and cons of REIGN as a system.

Pro: Works perfectly with how we do dice rolling, I can just call for rolls and take the first ten or whatever.

Con: Swords are far and away the best weapon in terms of fighting style unless I refluff something. Polearms get a berserker style where you get more dice and perhaps more damage in exchange for enemies getting bonuses to hit you (the problem is that there's a cap on your dice pool and any dice over that just cancel penalties, especially for someone who's good enough to have a fighting style) so it's easy to just take hurt for no gain. Axes have a pretty legit fighting style for just mowing down mobs of Unworthy Opponents, but it does nothing in a duel against a worthy foe. Swords have, at minimum, three (there might be four, I forget); one greatsword style based around breaking weapons and destroying armor wherever they touch where the capstone permanently cripples enemies. One dual-shortsword style with a neat "attacking and defending is the same thing" shtick. One works-with-any-sword style in the corebook that is probably the best single combat style in the game that covers basic sword skills like quickdrawing, knocking enemies over, and cutting people in half. Unarmed fighting actually has the most styles, if I recall, but I definitely get the sense that fighting styles were designed based on what occurred to the writer at the time because there's a style for dual-wielding cargo hooks and nothing for maces or clubs. Similarly, for magic, because of the paradigm that anybody can just...learn magic, some schools are shamelessly better than others because some cater more towards dabblers and others towards serious attuned scholars who only know that one school. IF you pick Wizard instead of Knight or Thief at character generation, you start with several spells from the Smoke Sculptor school, which needs zero attunement but is powered by having smoke in the air nearby. hence the need for, say, a flintlock staff whose ignition sets light to a bundle of special smoke-producing aromatic herbs in a censer at the top.

As far as the three paths go, any of them can get stuff from the others, it just determines how you start off and how you tend to solve problems. Thief can easily take a bunch of fighting styles and magic and become a badass combatant, but will still probably resolve things through stealth and trickery.
>>
>>1607866
So far, it seems like the con of being pigeonholed into a few paths is no fun and sounds like the refluffing is needed.

At least it makes rolling easier.

Thanks, now stoned sorcerers are in my head.
>>
>>1607888

It doesn't require much refluffing, because most weapons already have a path, just not a path I like. Only blunt weapons really got screwed over, and if you insist on using one the greatsword style honestly makes a lot of sense refluffed to represent just breaking swords by whacking them with a mace and crushing limbs so badly they never recover.
>>
>>1607905
Ah, okay. well, I guess that isn't so bad.

Will need to read the REIGN corebook then. So, I don't remember much of the details of your idea, care to explain again?
>>
>>1607905
Wong, I was doing Knight variations when I realized that if the Threads & Wheels systems are Mediumweight level... Then the stats for the Knights in the Rogue's Gallery should be wrong as they would cost more and weight more... a -4MV Knight should look more like this:

AVALONIAN KNIGHT
Heavy Striker Torso: C/S/K 10, 5 tons
Heavy Striker Head: C/S/K 5, 2.5 tons
Heavy Striker L. Arm: C/S/K 6, 2.5 tons
Left Hand: 2 CP, 1 Space, 1 Kill, 0.5 tons
Heavy Striker R. Arm: C/S/K 6, 2.5 tons
Right Hand: 2 CP, 1 Space, 1 Kill, 0.5 tons
Heavy Striker L. Leg: C/S/K 6, 2.5 tons
Heavy Striker R. Leg: C/S/K 6, 2.5 tons
43 cp (18.5 Tons)
Armor: Medium Weight (6 CP, 6 SP, 3.0 tons) on all locations (36CP) (18 tons)

Main Sensors (Head): 4 CP, 1 Space, 2 Kills, 1 ton
Backup Sensors (Torso): 2 CP, 2 Spaces, 2 Kills, 1 ton

Options: Torso Cockpit with Environment Pod (2 CP, 2 Spaces), Storage Module (1 CP, 1 Space), Liftwire (0.3 CP), Spotlights (0.2 CP)
(88.5CP and 38.5tons)
Armament: The Knight uses a Mated Cannon and Lance, a hit of 6K to either will destroy both. Total Stats: 12.4CP, 6 Spaces, 6tons.
[Handheld] Avalonian Lance (Lance form): WA 0, 7K, 3 CP, 3 Spaces, 3 tons
[Handheld] Avalonian Lance (Cannon form): Range 350 meters, WA 0, 6K, Ammo 10, 3 reloads, 8.40 CP, 6.6(7) Spaces, 3 tons.
[Arm-Mounted] Medium Shield: DA -2, SP 9, 9 CP, 4.5 tons
(109.9CP and 49tons)

Thrusters & Propulsion: 8 thrusters stored in allowing them to jump 200m at a time, without the capacity for in-gravity flight, but they can run 300m per ten seconds (30m/s) thanks to the sophisticated (and ridiculously expensive)system of treads built into their feet, reminiscent of a very complicated rollerskate, lets them ignore terrain that would severely hinder you. 27 CP, 9 tons

Total weight: 58 Tons before 17 points of Weight efficeny bring it down to 49.5
Total Cost: 153.9 CP

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the original Knight's stats you posted had the shield being handheld, not arm-mounted.
>>
>>1608431
Oops... It should be 9 Thursters, not 8.

Right then. While we wait, here is a plan for Lori and the Auction in general.
First, use the auction as normal. Simple stuff to start. Data, hostages, loot. Keep the importance escalating as time goes on. Then we sell a copy of the Biggs file.. or keeping it safe. Might be good to be careful with this in case the bugger tries something. My reasoning to do this is to give Fairchild and the like a false sense of simplicity. The Paladin will be the last thing on the list because she has the most perceived value. However, if this works, then we will never reach the Paladin bid.
Hakim will likely be the biggest aid, but the thing we wish to have ready is our services in the war. Have him make his bid for us to join the SSL as a member, and we make our demands. We've got a good list of them, including Cabot, and we can further refine them just before. But the big one will be loot. Lori is kept safe here because we got her through conquest and due to being a SSL member, there is no need to worry. She is kept out of the war so long as no one attacks our lands, and any Avalonian captured or surrendered to us is kept with us, either as information, volunteers or ransom for a later date. If this work, the auction ends because Lori is kept safe from the war and Fairchild's group. Eustace may still want to face us, but I think part of it is us trying to sell her off to the likes of Fairchild.

Here is a pastebin full of Knights.
https://pastebin.com/0yTLK0jg
>>
>>1608726
>musket
>with burst
That aside I also made a knight type thing. Maybe a kestrals refit or something. https://pastebin.com/m4zt2TEB
>>
>>1608712
First, what are we planning to sell?
For example, what data are you talking about, exactly?
The only things that I can list at the moment is our alliance, Lori, things from the museum raid and maybe any hostages that we still may have(But we aren't going to sell the avalonian crew, are we? Lori probably wouldn't like it and they would almost certainly get executed even if they don't have much info to tell, we all know how bloodthirsty is Fairchild's faction and they would love to make an example of someone.)

Also, I'm against mentioning the Biggs recording, we should use it as a weapon when we get the chance, not sell it away for temporary gains.
>>1608758
They mostly just glued a Pumpkinseed II sword into the end of a Gaunt Rifle... Which they probably got through the megacorp double dealing or by raiding jovian supplies, thats the conecept.
If you look at the shield, its a Pumpkinseed II active shield that got its pseudo-servo mechanism ripped out to make it more easier to install...

>Lancer
Its a cool a simple concept, I liked it, but you should apply some weight efficiency to it, there is plenty CP away from the 15Xs usual for Knights.

I was thinking about dividing that pastebin between "moded" Knights and "Improved" Knights, with the first group being Knights that were change due to improvisation in order to solve some battlefield need of the forces using them and the other being actually new designs made by avalonian technicians working under the Paladins... and mostly inspired in their leaders.
>>
>>1608807
The thing about a recording is that you can COPY the recording. There is no one stopping us from doing that. Getting the data out also serves as a weapon for this situation and can help hamstring Fairchild a bit. Hell, this is one of the few situations where we can use it as a weapon. Biggs won't be harmed politically because he is already rogue and Fairchild's time is coming. Holding on to it like an elixer won't help because the people this can affect are limited.
As for what data, mostly info we got from our scavage. A case of 'what we know, and what you might not know'. This could help Mars get some shit that they have been kept away from. As for hostages? Well, I wouldn't be surprised if some knights wanted to go back to avalon and not stay here. There are also the knights remaining from the psyche siege. 6 relatively high level ones if I recall. Other things we can sell are data on certain machines which Hakim was interested in or just small things we gathered. Sides, I am sure there is more than what we personally grabbed and gained. Oda could sell some stuff as well. I mean, who could turn down some ancient earth mech figures?
>>

>>
>>1608431
A bit late but wheels and treads can be one class smaller than your torso class so there wouldn't really be much point in giving them anything more than medium striker wheels and treads.
>>
>>1609631
Tsc, I had the feeling that I was forgetting something...
>>
>>1608879
Given what Caesar just told Roarke, I think we should focus on turning those knights instead.

Especially given how the Lady is demanding things that taint their honour.
>>
>>1611716
Oh we will likely have a chance of that, but it's not as simple as us telling them to do so. One way or another. Eustice considers us as a sort of rival. Asking him to do so will likely have the opposite effect. Instead, it's better to open the path that he does so himself, either through circumstance or because Caesar and Tabitha pushed him.
It's why I put a emphasis on 'people who surrender to us stay with us'. We stay the reasonable sort of group in the SSL when all other options are worse and chances are, we will get people to come over.
>>
>>1612061
If we're fighting the war against Avalon we can't just go and recruit Avalonians that's how you get spies and saboteurs. Besides your expected to kill your enemies.
>>
>>1612065
While I'm normally all for killing vegetable lovers I think capturing as many of them alive as we can in the upcoming fights would be a good idea. We just have to treat them good and then after the war we can probably recruit a bunch of them because we were honorable captors or some shit. It would help solve our manpower problem for one thing.
>>
>>1612086
We're joining a war to kill their God. Most people won't like that.
>>
>>1612089
Thats why I said ask them afterwards. She'll probably do some evil shit before the wars done that will make them see different anyway.
>>
>>1612098
And what's to stop them from lying? Besides your gimping ourself and our army by making us have to disable our enemies when their shooting to kill.
>>
>>1612104
Not much but press ganging is a pretty piratical thing to do and it would help us not be so fucking small. Plus our mechs will have a pretty distinct advantage over knights already, especially if we catch them in space. Also do it when its safe obviously. If its a big pitched battle then yeah shoot to kill.
>>
>>1612121
Yea press ganging was a pirate thing to do, but the people they did it to didn't worship their rulers as a literal God.
>>
>>1612127
Hey man, if its good enough for shaka zulu its good enough for me. We already have a few avalonian scrubs joining up anyway.
>>
>>1612134
They joined up before we decided to join the SSL, we better be keeping an eye on them too.
>>
>>1612135
As a band of pirates I cant imagine we are that hard to infiltrate in the first place.
>>
>>1612146
So we should just make it easier and give people with an axe to grind an easy way into our group?
>>
>>1612152
Got to build up somehow. If we cant recruit them we can still sell them off to their shitheel families.
>>
>>1612159
Then recruit entirely in Sol. Considering we'll be joining the SSL I doubt the other planets are going to be as strict with people leaving to our territory. And I doubt their families have the money to pay for them and I'd rather not have to worry about keeping them prisoner only for them to revolt, and having to constantly fly back to our territory to drop them off.
>>
>>1612163
Being a knight implies you are some form of noble so they must have some money behind them. Plus if we want to get big we need to take from everywhere we can. If we are going to be stealing avalonian planets presumably avalonians are going to be living on them who we will then need to put to work. Might as well do the same with the army.
>>
>>1612172
We aren't going to be stealing their planets because we have no way to support them, and they are way to far away from us to control and protect with our numbers. And most grunts are knights it seems. Besides you can't take from everywhere and anyone, theirs a reason countries have boarder control and immigration laws.
>>
>>1612182
>We aren't going to be stealing their planets
Then what is even the point of attacking them? We need new territory, production facilities and a bigger work force and they have them all lying there ready for the taking. Boarder control and immigration laws are nice and all but they arent for countries who are going out subjugating people.
>>
>>1612196
The point is to steal all their shit that isn't nailed down and get more mechs to scrap for our new army. Plus we can use the fact we're fighting Greenmen as a recruitment drive and get more Sol recruits.
>>
>>1612204
If we want to get big enough to become actually independent we are going to need to move on from stealing shit to producing our own shit. If we dont we will have to keep tip toeing around the big boys forever.
>>
>>1612182
They've already had splits in their ranks and we now know thanks to Ceasars report that there is a Lady faction and an Avalon faction in their military/government.

Also we already have Avalonians "on board".

As for females, not just our dicks but the dicks of all men we take under our wing are also Godly.

Glad to see you never change.
>>
>>1612196
Another thing to consider is that treaties and concessions can also be done alongside installing people to govern Avalon. As is, it's a case of 'Queen's faction' versus 'Green Lady's faction' with the green lady having more support. Supporting the Queen faction as the SSL hurts the green lady faction and getting them into power fully means they still have structure and won't need to be directly controlled. So we'd get resources, more people willing to join us, and not have to directly watch them.
>>1612204
Except if they want to fight, they would go to jupiter or mars, not the Belt. Manpower will always be a issue for us during this war and going just for scraps will not help us.
>>
>>1612210
You use the scraps as materials to get your production going.

>>1612212
Your still trusting them to be willing to betray everything they we're raised to believe and go against their Queen and the Lady either way. Plenty of people will lie to us and wait for a chance to desert or kill one of our men.

>>1612222
Their are benefits to joining us instead of staying with Jupiter or Mars, what's been keeping us back from a lot of them joining us was the planets keeping people from leaving to us.
>>
>>1612222
Fuck that. We arent here to support any avalonians, we are here to beat them up and take their stuff. We should integrate them fully or sell them off to their families for cash.
>>1612237
Why use scraps when they already have working facilities? Even apart from cash and resources we still need some where to build the things and there is only so much room on our colony and asteroid.
>>
>>1612237
There is also major benefits to staying with their factions. Power can be gained in equal measures in those places if they have the skill since SOUL is much more open. Likewise, they have academies, dedicated factories, and a lot more resources. Sure we will have a trickle, but it will likely not be a large one as you would expect and certainly not enough to deal with our man power issues. Likewise, training will likely not be as extensive as the Academies until we get the Roost fully operational which will take time.
>>1612249
Reparations my boy. We would still request money, resources and land as before, but having a government who likes us will be easier than trying to outright annex them. Likewise, we can also use the war to open up our own factories on their land. While it wouldn't be ours fully, it'd be secured and likely easier to get those people you want as well. Difference between liberator and conqueror.
>>
>>1612272
But we are definitely a conquer in this case.
>>
>>1612272
By joining the SSL we now have the time, they will be recognizing us as an independent nation and part of their alliance so we don't have to worry about a random invasion or crackdown. Its much better for us to focus on vetting new recruits and training them to be the best possible. It'll take centuries for us to ever have as many troops as the other planets in SOL so we should be focusing on having a smaller fighting force with the best trained soldiers available.
>>1612249
Because you want to use people and facilities with questionable loyalty while going against their God who is widely beloved.
>>
>>1612376
Its a problem that every successful conqueror has had to deal with and overcome.
>>
>>1612403
You can't compare real world situations to this one, no one on earth has the powers the Lady does to back up the idea of her being a God. This is like attacking Europe at the height of Catholic power when the Pope can do everything Jesus did.
>>
>>1612410
>implying some plant fucker compares to the almighty god
Random plebs have seen as much of the lady as they have jesus.
>>
>>1612427
They have seen proof of her powers.
>>
>>1612435
Like what?
>>
>>1612436
When she feel down to their planet she made an entire forest grow, she made the Paladins super human, the fact everyone on the planet is taught about how she is a God, and the Queen worships her and acknowledges her powers. Plus if the world is very medieval their would be tons of rumors about her powers and the people wouldn't be educated enough to tell the what is likely real and what isn't.
>>
>>1612436
Bio-sculpting and shit. Thunder is really over-exaggerating how religious they are.

I mean we already turned Loriette.

If we're going to be the "Freedom" guys then we have to let people who want to join.

Otherwise we're no better than Fairchild.
>>
>>1612452
Thats great on avalon but what about their other planets? Hell roarke beating the shit out of paladins would already put doubt in their minds.
>>1612455
We are kind of going the opposite way to freedom if we are invading them.
>>
>>1612455
>If we're going to be the "Freedom" guys then we have to let people who want to join.
No we don't, freedom means alot of things. And just letting anyone join you country is never a good thing.

>Otherwise we're no better than Fairchild.
As long as we don't force people into fucking us by threatening to kill their adopted son, we're pretty much better than her.
>>
>>1612376
I agree with you on focusing on skill and reliable machines, but time may not be a luxury we have. The moment Caesar returns with Naomi and any other who decided to desert, is the moment that war will be heading to the belt. At most, I can see this getting us 3 months. Not enough time to fully repair the colonies and turning them into academies and certainly not long enough to train them. Going for scrap also opens us up for attacks or traps where we are baited into a ambush.
It's why I prefer the liberation option. If we try to conquer, people will be resistant. Just human nature there. But if the Green Lady becomes a 'mad god' in their eyes, it becomes easier, and if it's to save their homeland from the 'mad god' then it becomes easier still.
>>1612461
Invasions can happen for various reasons and as is we have no plan on invading yet. If anything, they will likely come at us first if we succeed with Caesar.
>>
>>1612472
We'll have the SSL backing us up at that point, and if they come right towards the belt then its a perfect chance for us and the rest of Sol to set a trap for them.
>>
>>1612472
But we definitely arent liberators. We want to claim their shit as ours so someone else doesn't swoop in and do it.
>>

>Otherwise we're no better than Fairchild.

>not letting people join for valid safety concerns is the same as being a mass-murdering bitch-fit-throwing manipulative general cunt who has delusions of grandeur

Are you being serious right now? Now you're exaggerating.
>>
>>1612484
You really think we're going to get a claim on a planet when not only are we joining the war late, but as one of the weaker Sol powers?
>>
>>1612490
Yes. If we are the one who took it what are they going to say? No you cant have it, you can only fight for us and get no spoils of war?
>>
>>1612494
How do you expect us to be able to take a planet and hold it with our forces. And Yes they will tell us since they committed more forces and fought longer they get first dibs and if we have a problem with it then maybe its time to arrest us for piracy or just tell us to fuck off.
>>
>>1612494
>If we are the one who took it what are they going to say? No you cant have it, you can only fight for us and get no spoils of war?

That is pretty much how it works, yeah. They aren't actually obligated to let us have anything. And even if we ask politely or even raise a stink we wouldn't get enough backing from the other factions save possibly Mars because Hakim is a bro to force the ruling powers to actually let us have it.

It's politics 101. We didn't take the planet on our own, of our own volition, rightfully, so we have absolutely no valid claim to deserve the land. Likely it'd be a puppet entity that is allowed to be it's own thing but with governing powers provided by the SSL. Semi-autonomous, really.
>>
>>1612500
>>1612506
Then thats just being their little bitch boy. Who would agree to these conditions? Whats to stop them just not doing any of the shit we agree to in that case? I'd sooner go back to trying go alone.
>>
>>1612524
Because we are joining the war late. Had we been there from the start there may be precedent. If the heads of the SSL decide to attack us for no good reason out of the blue they are violating their own laws and charter and would turn everyone else in the SSL against them. They literally cannot attack us if we join without shooting themselves in the foot.

You obviously don't understand how this politics thing works. We could try to demand Avalon as part of our spoils for joining, but they'd most likely say no. Having a puppet or protectorate out of Avalon works better for the whole SSL than giving it to a bunch of actual pirates who literally JUST joined. We are not the big fish here. You need to stop thinking that we are.

Hell, think if you've been working at a job for twenty years and the management position opens up and instead of putting you in that position Carl who got hired two weeks ago gets the management job. That would piss you off, and rightfully so.
>>
>>1612478
Do not assume they will be able to provide major aid. The advantage joining them gives us is that we only have to fight 1 front. The war is still vast and Biggs has shown his skill at getting stuff through.
>>1612506
You've got the right of it. Depending on how much structure remains will say how much of a puppet it will be. The war will end and if Avalon loses, I expect them to do the Treaty of Versalis treatment to them. Power cut down, having to pay for damages, all that sort of stuff.
>>1612524
Now hold on there. The thing you are focusing on is hard power. Resources, land, people. We will likely get some from this, but it's not going to be easy and going alone could end worse for us.
What I am suggesting is Soft Power. Grattitude, alliances, favors, and all that. Yes, getting the stuff directly from the war is unlikely, but if a non-greenman Avalon likes the Belt, either through our deeds or by simply being the only group to actually give a damn, it can open things up. Will we own the land? No. But we can own the factories on their land. Will we own the resources? No. But we could have better deals and trades than the others. People may willingly join us because we did help them deal with the evil Green Lady and help put the Queen in her rightful position.
>>
>>1612547
Maybe it would if carl didnt just solo half an army and land the company a huge contract. These fuckers have enough planets that they can fight on equal terms with the SSL and you are telling me we cant even have one of them?
>>1612560
Thats great and all but if we dont take these guys over mars or jupiter will. They arent just going to leave the vegetable lovers to their own devices after they kick their ass and we arent the only people who want to get bigger.
>>
>>1612580
>Maybe it would if carl didnt just solo half an army and land the company a huge contract. These fuckers have enough planets that they can fight on equal terms with the SSL and you are telling me we cant even have one of them?

>tfw the SSL has multiple pilots who can solo half an army
>tfw so does Avalon, moreso

Yes, we can't have any. Because the SSL doesn't "take" planets. It's why Qui'lir is still technically an independent planet instead of being "property of Jupiter". They can't just claim the planets. They can set up a new governance and add it to the SSL as a protectorate or puppet state likely as they have to other planets in the past. Other than colonies there are no directly owned entities like that. It's why Hakim is only the caliph of Mars and not "Mars and Pluto and Venus and blah blah blah". Because he can't be while still being in the SSL. The SSL ensures legal protection as an individual entity. Qui'lir will still be Qui'lir even if it has a Jovian making sure it is "well-governed" just like Mars will remain Mars and not "Mars and this planet".

Think of it like a Duchy. The individual planets are Counties. And the planetary chairman is the Duke of the SSL. Hakim is the count of Mars. Roarke is the count of the Belt. You can't collect more counties since it would upset the balance of the duchy in your favor, so the duke will not allow it, and the other counts will support the duke because if the duke loses then you could do whatever you want to them after it all falls apart.

We would need legal precedence to get any more territory. Otherwise our only option is to ally ourselves with another "count". So basically what we should do is let Avalon become a puppet state. Then we ally with what remains of Avalon. We garner power slowly, carefully, and most importantly in a way that doesn't make the SSL crack down on us. That is the nominal way of taking more land.
>>
>>1612624
Aye, it's what I was suggesting when it came to helping the Duke liberate Avalon from the Green Lady faction. Mars won't let Jupiter have Avalon, and vice versa so it will likely be a puppet state. But if it's a puppet state that likes us, then it will certainly mean we will get the most of it. Mars will be those damn Saracren, Jupiter those who beat them, but the Belt? The Belt was reasonable and showed some consideration.
>>
>>1612624
My problem is that I just dont see them making avalon a puppet state instead of dividing their shit up between them. Mars and jupiter are also competing against each other so who would end up being the puppeteer?
>>
>>1612635
It's more likely the situation will be like Germany after the first world war. Not necessarily puppeted, but demilitarized and with obligations to the other countries.
>>
>>1612644
Yeah, and nothing bad came from that.
>>
>>1612635
The SSL would be the puppeteer. The Chairman would likely decide who to send out to make sure things get done. The Planetary Chairman does have the most power, after all. So it would biased however he wants to have it. Mars and Jupiter have "equal" say in the matter. But it's skewed to whomever has the most backing of the smaller entities in the SSL, which would likely be the Chairman because propaganda paints him in a nice light. Hakim is seen more as a warrior than statesman, so why would you want him to pick who gets to rule? That sorta thing. It's all about public opinion at this point.

Which is why if we want to make ourselves stronger we ally with as many smaller entities as possible without stirring the pot. We already have Mars on our side for the time being which gives us a lot of protection and power. That may change once Hakim dies, so we need to make a ton of little friends. One arrow alone easy to break, many arrows unbreakable, yadda yadda that old saying.

Avalon will cease to be "Avalon" and just be the planet of Avalon and the planet of "XXXX" and so on as they are forcefully inducted into the SSL.

AT least that's my take on it. I don't actually know, since Wong is God. I'm just going on the information I have to think of logical scenarios. And I don't have all the information.
>>
>>1612658
Who is in charge anyway?
>>
>>1612560
If they know the Avalonian fleet is coming right into their backyard they are going to take advantage of it.
>>
>>1612653
It went poorly because the war reparations were horrible and worse by the year as they added more and more. It also didn't help that of their side, Germany was really the only one who paid for it. Lighter reparations that don't tank the economy and require a barrel of currency to buy bread will ease that. A situation where it's a loss they can put on the Green Lady could help too.
>>
>>1612667
The Planetary Chairman, apparently. But as far as I'm aware this is also some sort of weird faux democracy, too.
>>
>>1612673
I cant see too many light reparations for anyone who follows a greenman in this universe. They should consider themselves lucky they arent all shot from orbit.
>>1612675
I mean do we know who they are?
>>
>>1612680
Garret's father.
>>
>>1612680
>I mean do we know who they are?

Oh, I forget his name. Might be in a pastebin, I'll check.

>>1612682
But yeah, this guy.
>>
>>1612682
For real? I thought he was just some high level guy.
>>
>>1612688
Yep. It's why Fairchild had to get someone to write an apology letter by Cabot to him.
>>
You guys are forgetting we're also gaining the Asteroid belt once we get recognized as a nation and all of those Asteroid with tons or resources are now ours. We just have to get the starting funds to build factories and we'll be pretty good for resources.
>>
>>1612695
The real issue is manpower. Since we occupy such a wide space what with it being a fuckoff huge asteroid belt. The fuckoff huge asteroid belt, really. We have to police the whole damn thing. Most of our resources will have to be devoted to that in anything other than wartime. So we do need more people. But you already knew that. Most of us do.
>>
>>1612706
And we need to make joining us more appealing than living on the other Sol planets, and there are dozens of ways to do that. Looting rights for all raiders (including women captured) , less laws, monthly stipends to farmers and craftsmen.
>>
>>1612714
What are they going to farm? Space dirt?
>>
>>1612714
Just give everyone free dental. The most tempting of offers. We need better services for military and veterans than what Jove provides if possible. Even if you can't grow, or you're really bad at building, almost anyone can shoot a gun.
>>
>>1612727
And if we teach everyone how to shoot a gun good we can just go and take shit from other non SSL solar systems that we need.
>>
>>1612714
>(including women captured)
thats how you get Green skulls.
>>1612720
One of the biggest bodies in the belt is a giant ball of clay. Mix it up with some other materials and you could turn the entire thing into a massive farming colony. Still, stuff can grow n colonies as seen on the Psyche, it's just the matter of getting people who can handle it.
>>
>>1612735
Colonies have atmosphere though.
>>
>>1612735
And we did it with Lori and Fatima too.
>>
>>1612744
Lori and Fatima chose to stay though. I doubt anyone would be very happy with us instituting slavery with what happened in the CUSS. The cats especially.
>>
>>1612735
>thats how you get Green skulls.

Pretty sure you get Green Skulls by being a psychopathic asshole with delusions of grandeur and a hateboner.

It's not like some dudes got together and said "Yeah, let's rape some bitches. Bitches love rape.". They had a clear plan.
>>
>>1612753
Oh not the Catgirls won't like us, oh the horror. But seriously its not our right to say our men can't if we use the defense that we can keep Lori since we consider her our treasure.
>>
>>1612776
We DO have the right, since grabbing some random woman on a ship and deciding to they're your property is completely different from taking someone hostage to ransom them and then ending up not doing that. We didn't capture Lori because we wanted HER, we captured her because we wanted what we could get FOR her.
>>
>>1612776
You can't think it'll work out, though. Treating people like property and slavery isn't kosher here. They stay willingly or they don't. Also that's a great way for people to take prisoners, fuck em, then eventually get stabbed in their sleep because they let their guard down.

The only reason Roarke can do it is because he is 300% charisma.
>>
>>1612776
One of the benefits of being the sole person in charge is that you can do shit the common man cant.
>>
>>1612785
You say that but I have no doubt that if she was a dude or at least obviously looked like a dude we would actually be selling him rather than trying whatever bullshit we are now.
>>
>>1612785
It doesn't matter why we did it it matters that we did it and it sets a precedent.
>>1612787
They should have known better.
>>
>>1612800
Well yeah, once Wong said Secret Waifu everyone wanted the bonus she could get us.

>>1612801
A precedent for hostage taking and being a bit of a manwhore, yes. Not slavery.
>>
>>1612808
The defense we plan on making is that we are allowed to keep Lori because she was taken by us as loot from a raid and ours to do with. That defense is easily used by anyone who captured a woman they wanted, and if we say nuh uh only the king can do that then how are we different than any other government?
>>
>>1612801
Thunder, it's time to stop. It's a genuinely bad idea. This is not the middle ages. Can't be doing that any more.
>>
>>1612827
Now I'm more arguing about if claiming Lori as loot sets a precedent.
>>
>>1612824
Well if we cant keep planets we capture because the SSL will beat our asses then joe soape cant keep women because roarke will beat his ass.
>>
>>1612834
Not really. We took her hostage and plan on putting up a front that we're willing to ransom her off unharmed but that nobody'll make a good enough offer. It's completely different from random guys getting to make most anyone that want into a slave.
>>
>>1612834
Will it set precedent, yes. Does that mean that it'll hold up in a court? No. Precedent doesn't mean defacto legality. Especially since the rets of the SSL will more than likely step in and say "Yeah, Roarke did it, that's cheeky. That doesn't mean it's okay now that you are a legal entity of the SSL. BEFORE you were a recognized nation and just a pirate band that was okay for you. But NOW it isn't since you are no longer a pirate band, you are a nation-state.".

Basically the precedence it sets is shaky at best and outright nonexistent more logically. We do have to overhaul our rules since we aren't just going to be a handful of ships any more. We are joining the SSL, and slavery is illegal in the SSL.
>>
>>1612852
That's fine, I'm saying if we try and go the route of keeping Lori by claiming her as loot and that according to our terms for joining the SSL we keep all Loot we take then you set a precedent.

>>1612856
Good point anon.
>>
>>1612824
Also we arent really a government at all. The whole thing is pretty much a cult of personality based around roarke. Most people arent joining up because we have less space taxes, they are joining up because roarke is a really cool guy and they want to be on his team because they think he can punch anyones face in.
>>
>>1612869
It is mostly about Roarke being cool but the not paying space taxes and getting to loot shit is definitely a factor to people joining.
>>
>>1612902
Yeah but so far we are the one that get all the loot. The lads get their pay checks the only other people just deciding they get to keep shit are our top officers.
>>
>>1612869
There's also the fact that other major options are a huge, corrupt bureaucracy that greatly rewards shady and illegal practices, a nation based on religious fervor and devotion that's very close to the brink of civil war and self-implosion, and a monarchy led by a Green Man where you'll probably never have the chance to advance to the top echelons of society. Anyone can be anything in the Iron Kestrels (or Eisentor now, I guess) so long as they're lucky and/or skilled enough.
>>
>>1612915
Everyone loves a meritocracy. Except everyone in it who realizes they aren't hot shit. And communists. Fucking commies.

This new captcha is dumb as shit, though. [Click, wait twenty seconds for new picture to load to repeat process seven times] Just because your shitty clickbait on the bottom didn't fucking work you'll make captcha a fucking cunt to try to force people to buy the pass. Nice try, but no.
>>
>>1612824
Nigga what the shit. A) We're a fucking Pirate King who ultimately rules through violence and loot. If we say we get special rules about women then that's how it is and they can suck our dick. B) Technically Lori is Loot of the Belt Government not an individual. C) It's Roarke Susan Starwind so I'm pretty sure everyone will assume it's just a convenient explanation. D) Our wives would skin us alive if we allowed that shit.
>>
>>1612869
Best Government really. I'm all for less taxes and punching in the faces of people that fuck around.

Cars, roads, and storefronts. Gotta wait for the street signs. Or legacy, if that still works. I should check.

Whats wrong with cars and storefronts?
>>
>>1612973
For me at least they just fade out and in super slow. You click em and the little check mark pops up and it takes fucking ages for it to cycle. Then I have to do another set afterwards. It's not the ones where you click them and they stay there until you hit verify.
>>
>>1612981
Refresh that shit nigga
>>
>>1612981
Yeah, that happens to me sometimes too. I guess it's server lag?

That's what I do. I just cycle until I get street signs. bruh.

It's been that way for me shortly after the clickbait at the bottom of every page was taken away.Don't think it's server lag. Everything else is just as fast as usual.

Wong here, internet still down. Driving over to see a relative who has internet but said relative tends to be very distracting and gregarious.

As to the above discussion, two points. One, Loriette isn't a slave. She's a hostage you're keeping indefinitely, but not a slave, I expect eventually she'll be one of your pilots and likely equivalent to a Captain. Two, the Planetary Chairman rules Jupiter, not the SSL itself. The SSL is a larval organization that so far works through cooperation between its member nations facilitated by the representatives of those nations with heavily implied Terran interference undercutting the normal supremacy of Mars and Jupiter as the military heavyweights.

Also, Avalon is a system, not a planet. Lorien is its capital and the more livable world. I think the other was Mordor, to continue the Tolkien theme, but I have to check.
>>
>>1617080
>As to the above discussion, two points. One, Loriette isn't a slave. She's a hostage you're keeping indefinitely, but not a slave

There is a fundamental difference between someone being held for the purposes of bargaining and taking someone as property. Loriette is a hostage, yes, but what Thunder was describing objectively categorizes the women as loot, thus property. We don't own Loriette, but taking a person as loot would imply ownership. And even a willing slave is still a slave.

Thanks for those bits of info though. I didn't know the planets of Avalon had a Tolkien theme going for them.
