You smile a little and brush your hand along your still lusciously coiffed and knotted hair, the jade decorations hanging from the ebony hair sticks held by the gold and jade comb glistening brightly. Kiku is watching you with great trepidation, and that too is understandable. Your heart is only now just starting to race from adrenaline and other mysterious, powerful chemicals. Fear leaves a strange metallic taste along your tongue.

You lower your hand and carefully smile, working very hard to not scare Kiku-chan any more than you already have. “I am here to meet with Shikoku-sensei for a personal fitting. Please be so kind as to inform her that Kawaii Aoi is here to see her.” You place your hands demurely at the front of your dress and slowly relax into a less natural but even less threatening pose.

The young woman frowns slightly, and asks in a rather sharp tone, “Do you have an appointment, Miss 'Kawaii'?” Kiku-chan looks at her and narrows her eyes, while Er Yin covers her mouth and rests her elbow on her opposite hand, her tail lashing rather wildly in amusement. Your use of a pseudonym in VEX isn't particularly unusual, as it's simply what Naya-sensei called you with you tole her your name was Aoi.

You tilt your head and give her a pitying look as she challenges you. “Miss Nanase, do you enjoy your job?” She blinks and looks – and smells – terribly confused. “I think that you could really be an exemplary saleswoman, and might even be in a position to make a name for yourself in this business, miss Nanase,” you start, and she immediately becomes defensive. “However, you may wish to learn much more about the local culture and about the many other designers and models in the area, particularly those who avail themselves of the shopping districts in Shibuya and Harajuku.”

She draws herself up to respond and you speak very quietly and calmly, lifting your right hand to forestall what is shaping up to be an insulted repudiation of what you have just told her. “Please inform Naya-sensei that Aoi is here for an outfitting, and we can put this behind us.” You look her in the eyes, calm, sincere, placid.

Her will falters in the face of your absolute certainty, and she turns in a huff, making her way to the fitting rooms in back. The two other employees and the three other customers didn't seem to notice the....you can't really call it an altercation, because really it was just a polite reminder of her place. Then you turn to Kiku-chan and Er Yin, speaking with equal calm and softness. “Please explain to me how Kiki-hime is performing this particular play today?”

Kiku-chan looks up at you and blinks, her eyes widening as she sees the sullen glow of your claws and horns. “I had no idea she was performing this particular play, aniki. I would have recommended against it if I had known, but she has performed similar plays before, without repercussions or issues.” It is clear that Kiku-chan is aware of your biggest concern; that is to say, the nature of this particular play, rather than merely its content.

“I think that she will do very well, and that her play should see extraordinary success.” You tilt your head and turn your attention on the lovely sorceress dressed in the sharp and carefully tailored suit she has chosen just for this date. It's distracting, but not distraction enough.

You take a slow, calming breath. Fear easily turns into violence; it is exactly what fear is for, after all, and Water dragonettes are all about violence. Their 'fight or flight' instincts lacks a lot of the 'flight' part, that's all. “While I honestly hope that her play will be successful – and I have no doubt it will be, that isn't really what concerns me. It's the fact that aside from all the other danger she is in, which I trust out family and clan to take care of perfectly well, there is the very real danger that this could insult an actual Dragon Kami.” Kiku-chan's eyes widen a little, but she doesn't seem terribly surprised. “Because even with permission, the kami can be really irritable about things like that, regardless of what was said previously.”

A thoroughly shaken Nanase-san is making her way towards the counter, undoubtedly to write in that Naya-sensei is busy for the next hour or two. You politely ignore her in favor of focusing on Er Yin-sensei. “I have been to several noh plays, Ryukusa-sama,” she murmurs with some amusement, her smile helping ease your concerns in spite of your worries. “Kiku-chan enjoys them a great deal.”

“If she had told me she was performing it herself I would have wrote it differently,” mutters Kiku-chan, surprising you.

“I thought Er Yin was the one who had a hand in it,” you admit with a bit of surprise.

Kiku-chan fixes you with a glare. “I am classically trained, stupid lizard. Noh plays are used to placate and entertain spirits as much as humans. With Hinata-hakase's work, I wrote a large number of plays of many kinds over the years, and this one was not so difficult.” She covers her mouth with her hand, lacking a longer sleeve at the moment, and looks askance. “I just hope that clumsy oaf doesn't trip on her pants again.” Your confusion must show, because she looks at you and frowns. “My sister is a graceless cow when she wears hakama.”

“....I will keep that information to myself. However....” Turning back to Er yin you step close and lay your hand along hers, and she flips her hand over to lightly grasp your wrist. Her sightless eyes widen when she feels how quickly your blood is rushing and how hot your skin is compared to your normal temperature. “That doesn't really excuse Er Yin for not only allowing it but placing her in danger from retaliation from The Maker of Snow and Rain himself. He's no Susano-Oh, but Kuraokami is not someone I want to annoy, regardless of his promises and offerings!”

If it makes you feel better, I will explain myself at length while we play.” The spike in your priestess' blood temperature is rather alarming, and you look over at her, as her tail nearly takes out a display and a passer-by. Er Yin leans close, and murmurs softly. “Since you need the handicap, she will sit in your lap first, until I win.”

Nanase is approaching, clearly intending to take you to see your friend.

I think i'll practice my shibari too; that way she won't get bored sitting in my lap.” You actually say this just loud enough for the shopgirl to overhear and she slows down, her eyes widening as she realizes you are much more than you seem. “I think over her clothing first, then without. I think she should be well and truly textured by the fifth or sixth game you lose.” Interestingly, Kiku-chan isn't as embarrassed by this as she is dubious, looking at Er Yin doubtfully.

“I take it it's a tactic you've tried before? Has is been successful against others like me?” You are genuinely curious of course.

“Well, it was a surprise to me,” murmurs your priestess.

“It has helped, yes,” murmurs Er Yin as she takes Kiku's hand when it caresses the back of hers.

You look at Nanase-san, and she bows deeply. “Please follow me, Naya-sensei will happily see you immediately.” Her cheeks are adorably red, and she is moving....oh. Well, Naya-sensei always did prefer a hands on approach to discipline problems. You'll have to ask what she used, that poor girl is having the worst time walking, and she's wearing a skirt and panties, so it couldn't have just been a hand....but you didn't hear anything as loud as a paddle would have been....

“Thank you Nanase-san.” you follow, but you do glance over your shoulder. “And keep in mind, that I can still get there in less than five minutes from here and cause the whole thing to be canceled, so you had better make that explanation very much worth my while, shogi handicaps or no.” You turn your attention back to the room in general. Your heart is still racing a bit, and not for the potential pleasure later (or coming up for that matter). Still, Er Yin is not someone to be trifled with; the end of the Shogunate wasn't an easy time for foreigners or Ainu, so she is a power to be reckoned with.

You manage to catch Kiku's accusatory glance at her master, who deigns not to notice. She probably warned Er Yin that you wouldn't be so easily distracted from a potential threat to Kiki-hime, regardless of how competent anyone else is.

Nanase leads you to a large room with a nicely sized dais in the center and a variety or wardrobes and closets, and a number of mirrors that would allow someone to see every angle with minimal movement. It makes the feng shui a nightmare, of course, but the plants and strategically placed mannequins help, along with curtains over dressing room entries as well. Naturally, the centerpiece is Naya, who is sitting on the edge of the dais with her legs crossed and her hands over one knee, shivering with barely controlled excitement. Her vibrantly pink eyes widen in appreciation when she sees your outfit, and you can feel her heart flutter in adoration.

When you fully enter, Nanase bows and then gapes as you catch Naya-sensei in a hug and sweep her around, her giddy laughter infectious. Kiku-chan is once more staring at one of your acquaintances, while Er Yin's tail slowly rises, swaying threateningly. Which you can't exactly blame her for, given the fact that Naya-sensei is a demon-child.

“Aoiiiiiieeee! Ye bin 'way since ev'r an' ye'd nae giv'n th' slighter's word on y'self! I've nae worried a bit, tho', sure!!!” You set the delicate demon-child on her feet, her leather shorts and bustier not even slightly scuffed. You aren't mussed at all, though her horns nearly took some of your hair out of place. The polished ebony of them gleams, and her white skin almost glows with the addition of her perfect makeup that lends a more skin-tone to her coloration. Chains and upside down crosses – not merely for show, as all her jewelery consists of silver or black jade with anodized black aluminum – sway distractingly. Well, for most people. Her long white hair is done in long tails tightly bound close to her scalp, and her fingertips are painted nearly the same tone as her eyeshadow.

As Naya rubs her cheeks against yours affectionately, you catch sight of a stupefied Kiku-chan literally jaw-dropped, and Er Yin-sensei looks like she's trying to decipher the incredibly thick accent and failing miserably.

Her cheeks flush (you can't really call it a blush, as it is both barely visible through her makeup and really terribly blotchy due to her lack of pigmentation) and you stare into her eyes, which widen a little at the newer coloration. They were blue before, but now they are dragon's eyes, and a deep sapphire blue. “I have missed you too,” you practically breathe across her lips, and she inhales, drinking deeply of your breath.

Her eyes roll back into her head and she shudders all over as you give her just a touch of your Chi. When you step back, you keep your grip on her bizarre horns, and her very, very long ears droop, caressing her shoulders. When you let go her eyes pop open and she bounces in place, her heart racing and her breaths quick and uneven. “Oh oh oh, tha' be th' stuff, tha' there!” Kiku is looking at you like you've gone insane, but you wink at her before you gracefully step aside.

“I have a request, one that only you could possibly...oh. Ah, one moment; you'll probably have to try and enunciate more carefully, my domme for the evening can't make heads or tails out of-”

“EEEEEEE!!!!! A domme, tr'ly???? Tha's fantastic Aoi!” She bounces and clasps her hands as you step aside and show her the magnificent beauty that is Er Yin. Er Yin looks though the youngish looking demon-child and relaxes, subtly but definitely. Kiku slips over to your side as Naya makes a soft cooing noise. “She's a downright goddess, she is,” she says a little more carefully, your request making her aware of how thick her foreigner's accent is. “A pard'n, oujo-san, di'n't mean t' cause you trouble w' m' funny tongue....”

Er Yin bows slightly, graceful and thankfully smiling, even as Naya takes two improbably long steps to reach her, purposefully jerking back at the last second so the momentum of her crosses doesn't carry them into Er Yin by accident. She leans to the left and right, lifting up the opposing leg and curling it back to balance with as she gets a nice good look at Er Yin. Kiku is still slightly stunned, and watches with some concern, fingering the half-dozen charms in her hand.

Er Yin reciprocates, her Void Eyes wide open even as she stares blankly into nowhere while being examined. “You'd best be polite, that oujo-san is a sorceress, and this oujo-san,” you comment, slipping behind Kiku-chan and reaching over her shoulders to cross your arms along her soft chest, “is my priestess. So do try and curb your more greedy instincts, hmn?”

“Oi, y' di'n't tell me y'd gone and....oh. Oh!” Turning she started to address you, but her eyes fall on the lovely Kiku-chan, who glares at the demon-girl imperiously. “Many blessin's 'pon y' new family, oujo-san! D'ye ken th' bairn a boy or gel?”

“Girl,” you whisper to Kiku-chan, translating rather than answering as Naya gives the mother to be a deep bow and clasps her hands before her while doing so. The charms go away, which you are grateful for.

“It will be a girl, when she hatches,” Kiku-chan says calmly, both hands rubbing her belly as you lower yourself enough to kiss the back of her head. You'd kiss the top, but her horns would get tangled in your hair decorations.

“Ah, lovely lovely! Now! You!” She turns back to Er Yin and gestures grandly. “What may I do for you, my goddess of statuesque figure and grand spirit!” You relax, as the Chi works it's magic with her, smoothing out her accent and calming her somewhat.

(What is she, aniki?) asks your priestess in the emptiness of your mind.

Those soft pink eyes widen as Er Yin makes her request, the pinpoints of white fire fading slowly. “Aoi! Y' brought me...brought me a virgin!?!” Clasping her hands she almost radiates sparkles and rainbows, while Er yin smiles indulgently, not quite understanding the reference. “'S Kristmes!!!!” She cries aloud, before turning and leaping into your arms. You manage to move kiku-chan out of the way with one arm, catch the enthusiastic demon-child in the other, and ed up hugging them both, while being tied up in anodized aluminum chains with black jade crosses at the ends.

Kiku yelps but doesn't try and escape you, though she does go pale when you have spun half-way around. You very quickly set her down and let her recover, while you disentangle yourself while getting cheek-rubs and nudges from the excitable demon-girl. (she's a friend, and a generous and excitable one. Also, very talented; between the three of us, Naya, Subaru and I could probably become the rulers of Shibuya in short order if we wanted to bother.) Kiku blinks slowly and looks a little better, but doesn't respond yet. (Not what you asked, but probably more important. But I thought you'd already guessed. You can ask her; she's not particularly shy.)

Kiku shakes her head, and looks up at the bubbly albino-like demon-child as she accosts Er Yin – albeit gently and with much forewarning – to get her onto the dais and to start removing her clothing. (I think that she is the most vivacious person I have ever met. I do not think I have ever seen someone so violently eager to touch others.)

The slack-jawed stare your sorceress' hard, lean body receives and the shocked gaze at her shockingly soft and very large bosom gains in contrast is priceless. Well, almost priceless, you're pretty such you can blackmail her for a third of the price of the dress not to spread that photograph around. (Well, spanking her employee-slash-boyfriend probably helped. My breath did more.) Kiku-chan can't suppress the gasp, but both Er Yin and Naya are preoccupied, Er Yin with explaining her body and Naya tracing the deadly sharp scales and protrusions that Er Yin has an abundance of.

With a smile you walk over to your priestess and kneel, laying your hand over her belly and soothing the distressed babe within, calming her with thought and motion alike as you rub Kiku-chan's belly. (I don't know the name for her in her own language, but kyu is accurate enough. But rather than simply feeding an insatiable appetite, she takes small amounts of chi and transforms it into creative energy that she can give to others or use herself.) You slip your hand around the back of Kiku's head and pull her close, touching her nose with your lightly. She looks at you expectantly, her hand absently sliding along the hard muscles of your seer's abdomen, much to Er Yin's amusement.

I've really enjoyed these past couple threads, both because Er Yin and Kiku are delightful but also because... being interested and skilled at fashion doesn't have much to do with the clan that raised her, or being a demigod, or having a great and terrible destiny. This is mostly tangential, but it reminds of something I've kind of been wondering but I have no idea how to ask so I apologize if this comes across as insensitive.

Yes, and no.

Sexuality isn't as important as sex in this version of Japan (and is similar in actual Japan). The older, more fixed beings tend to view it as significant (such as Ryukusa picking up the Grass Cutting Blade and realizing how much it hated her, not simply because she was a dragonette but because she was female even though she was of the same lineage as the Emperor's), while female foxes are sympathetic to Inari even if they are nogitsune (hence why Peta found Ryukusa's goals permissible despite the dangers involved) because she is a deity of growth and nurturing aspect.

Sexuality, on the other hand, is almost insignificant - as long as heirs are produced and you keep it mostly private, the kami don't care what sorts of things you're up to in the bedroom. Some youkai are drawn to perversion though since perversion is a form of impurity; as a result it can be significantly dangerous to flaunt your sexuality in certain places. It would incredibly unsafe for Ryukusa to be overly affectionate to most any of her loved ones anywhere in hint's temple grounds, for example.

That's pretty informative, the part with Inari is pretty neat, and the bit with Hinata's temple is good advice, though that being said, despite being an ancient and deeply spiritual place, Horobi's Palace probably won't be subject to the same rules right?

Also, I was attempting to ask about the prevalence and additional consequence (if any) of, what the Japanese call "Gender Identity Disorder" From what I've been able to gather, it seems like it's semi-recently viewed through a disability in Japan, and was disconnected from sexuality, but I haven't found much historical information.
I'm not sure the amount of Jing you have, as well as Yin/Yang balance and probably additional factors, prevents that from occurring.

Like Ryukusa, who I think I recall you saying is female primarily due to Ryuujin only having daughters due to not wanting to cause succession issues with the Emperor of Japan but is still able to take the male role in tantric sex for example, very much sees herself as a woman, but I'm not sure if I should take that as evidence of anything or whether completely different elements apply.
And again, I know it's not really what the quest is about, the subject is interesting to me, and it's understandable that you may feel differently.

Gender Identity Disorder in Japan is a peculiar thing. It's only a very recent diagnosis, and unlike the Americanized version it is seen as a serious issue. It also has very little to do with sexuality, as it is related to body dysmorphia rather than some idealized self image that people in America view it as. It's treated as a disease in Japan because it's a condition often brought on by intense stress and physiocal issues. Many people sufferign from permanent illness of the body, especially painb relaited illnesses such as MS, Cancer, COPD-type illnesse4s and the like tend to suffer it because of body hatred and the desire to renovate or even replace one's body. Sex/sexuality has nothing to do with it - escape from a personal hell has everything to do with it.

In the world of Ryukusa, on the other hand, gender identity can be critical. While Ryukusa doesn't particularly notice of care, the gods can and do; appearances and actions are incredibly important to the deities, who see more surfaces than actually into spirits and hearts (which sounds bizarre, but will make sense shortly). A god lookign at Ryukusa sees a masculine dragon form, with the power to grant life to the wombs of females. Dresssing as a female is seen more as a disguise than a representation of femaleness, because her Jing is so overwhelming and her nature as a 'husband figure' and 'warrior' is how she presents herself physically. Her actions dictate her gender to the kami, not her physical sex.

Akari, on the other hand, is a sexless creature. Her insistence on a singular outfit - regardless of it's actual appropriateness to her sex - and her mixed nature of beign a switch, combined with her fascination with the appearance of others makes her a neutral force. She sports a distinctly masculine look, and (used to) keep a mask on her at all times, protecting her self from being 'determinante' as to her true nature. The kami see her as essentially a null sum of a person.

Yui, despite her boyish clothing and tomboyish attitude, acts like a female. She blushes, she is shy, she is subservient to a fault, and she finds herself the focus of attention rather than focusing her attention on others. the kami see her as female because despite her preferences and her actual looks, she is female in action.

Shoko, on the tail, is male to the kami. She is powerful, has great strength, and while she serves, she serves in the manner of a man rather than a woman (unlike Yui). Her presentation is male, despite her lovely voice and preferences in sex, and she acts like a male in most cases. despite this she cannot be a male in tantra because she lacks the necessary male energies to perform so, unlike Ryukusa. Despite this, the kami still see her as masculine, because she presents and acts the part.

This information should make the Noh play that much more interesting to you.

But at the same time, choosing not to agree with their assessment (Like Ryuukusa doesn't see herself as a man) doesn't really carry any consequence because the Kami just don't often register internal opinions/belief?

And yes, that does make the Noh play pretty interesting, especially given how much the kami value presentation/surfaces as well as the history of Japanese theater (not that other nations didn't do the same thing) traditionally being all-male, though since Kiki has done theater before, it seems like that at least wasn't ordained by the kami. also, when looking for historical examples of things blurring gender roles, the only examples I could find were theater performers, adolescent male escorts, and women impersonating men seeking a better life as soldiers/artisans.
