Last time, you were informed by Mr. Bennett that Donna and Ruth had made their way into the Witching Hour somehow without his knowledge or permission. Apparently, he's warding off something strong, directing you to their location so that he can teleport them out before they get killed by whatever is attacking them.

"It's a Monster-class Curse... Meaning it's formed out of a particular person's denied feelings, and the feelings of anyone who thinks likewise."

"I thought you said Myths and Curses were formed from ideals and concepts in the human psyche, and they show up when forgotten in reality!" Sofia asks while running.

"They are," David answers, charging ahead of all of you. "When someone represses an idea, such as revenge against a particular person, and they share that idea with a lot of people, all that psychic energy has to go somewhere. In other words, one of the reasons we need to fight Curses is because the thoughts people choose to ignore can go on a rampage if left alone long enough."
He holds up an arm as you turn a corner, and Keith stops right before crashing into him again.

"You gotta be shitting me," Allan prepares himself, and you see in front of you the Bogeyman that attacked you your first night at Olympia.

"We've come up against something, Mr. Bennett," Sofia asks.

"Then decide how to deal with it!" the computer teacher responds angrily. "I kind of have my hands full at the moment!"

David looks at you, and your role as the apparent team leader causes the decision to fall to you.

The bogeyman doesn't even speak, simply leering at you and looking for a method to approach before the gunshots you fire to provoke it cause it to howl and jump at you all. As it charges, its huge and disfigured limbs lash about and try to tear you apart in an animalistic fury.

Driven into an almost-panic, you fire wildly at the nightmare creature, roaring at the top of your lungs, and score two hits, one of which punches through its head and causes it to dissolve into nothing. And like that, the spell causing you all to choke on your fear is gone.

"What the..." David is still trembling, and leans on one of the walls. "How... How did that happen?"

"Yeah, I thought we were goners for sure," Keith is gasping for breath, and slowly braces himself.

Before you realize it, you realize Sofia is clinging to your lowered gun arm, and she lets go as soon as you notice. "What... How could that simply kill it so easily? It seemed invincible!"

>Hypnotic suggestion most like. It wasn't really invincible it just makes us think it is.
>"It must have been able to conceal its wounds to make us afraid we could never beat it."

"So it was using its mental influence to prevent us from determining its true condition?"

"I guess that makes sense," Keith says, shrugging off his tiredness, "It;s the bogeyman, after all. It's supposed to be invincible in the minds of kids, but if an adult shows up, it becomes helpless and disappears."

"Doesn't that make us children, though?" David asks

Mr. Bennett interrupts again. "Fantastic deduction, now GET OVER HERE! I can't hold this for much longer, and it's not very far! Hurry!"

On your way out, you found something odd.
>Found Ragged Teddy Bear.
---

Upon arriving, Sofia is the first to see what Mr. Bennett has pointed out. "This..."

Donna Price is here, but she's dressed in a stereotypical reporter's outfit evocative of Lois Lane.
"The truth? Don't be so delusional! You didn't report that steroid abuse to tell people the truth! You did it to get attention!"
Stepping forwards with vicious determination, she corners Ruth and... Donna?

"But... But he told me to..." Price is shaking in her sweater, covering her face with her arms. Ruth crouches over her, shielding the smaller girl with a determined look.

"And I'm sure that makes you feel much better about it. But he just told you what happened. All that outrage you wrote in your article? That was you, not him."
She creeps towards her 'original' with glowing red eyes and a terrible grin. "Now... Don't resist. I need your identity to write my news... I'll make sure you get famous. Rich."

"Hey, get away from her!" Keith yells, waving his left fist in his direction. "You must be that Monster Curse," he says when she turns to face you all.

Donna's duplicate seems disgusted at Keith's presence.
"Ugh, you again? You self-righteous types always get in the way of a good story. Though I suppose your attempts to prove me wrong stir up controversy. No such thing as bad publicity," she laughs.

"That's not true!" David barks at her. "It's the duty of the press to tell the truth!"

That was surreal. My browser crapped out there for a sec. At least I got that last post.

>>"So you spawned from Donna?"
"Spawned from Donna? It's more like I am Donna... or close enough that I could help her accomplish whatever she wanted in the real world. All she needs to do is accept the irrelevance of truth to publishing."

"Not in a million years!" Donna screams, on the verge of crying. "Get away from me!"

"Is it really so much to ask that you give up the truth for a life of luxury? So many have already."

>>"Why would anyone ever listen to you if they know they can't trust you?"
"Pah, nothing but platitudes. Do you really think anyone cares whether the news is actually true or not? So long as it's juicy and good rumor material, it's worth publishing."

Mr. Bennett cuts in. "This thing's going to try and take Miss Price's place in the real world, in case you haven't guessed. It was spawned by her repressed thoughts, after all. But I'm not letting that happen."

After a few seconds, Donna and Ruth blink out, leaving the Monster alone with you all.
"What?" it screeches. "NO!" Its face phases in and out for a second, like a television screen fuzzing up.

"Oh, yes. Now that they got close enough for me to target those two, I teleported them out- you can't get to either of them, Monster." The computer techer taps on some keys. "I'll back you all up. You've got to stop that thing, or it'll keep coming back, and we may not be there when that happens."

The Monster begins to distort and enlarge itself into a giant printing press. "Get in my way, and I'll run you and your name into the dirt until you're nothing but red ink!"[b/]

Stepping forwards, you stab Faust's hand into the Press and slowly begin to drain the coloration from it, the pigment flowing into your clawed hand like a vampire sucking the blood from a victim.

Faust has gained great power from this Monster!
NEW INHERENT SKILL:

As you feel the power flow through you, it takes a few seconds for you to shift back to your ordinary form. It was exhilerating, holding all that pure energy.

"She's come to. Great job. I don't have a bounty on that sort of thing, so... Let me just put that on your record and come back to you for that." Mr. Bennett comments. "Head back here, and I'll bring out refreshments."

---

When you get back to Avalon, the path is clear, and milk and Oreos await you in the room, placed on the table where Mr. Bennett puts his coffee. As you come in, he gives you a rare smile.
"Welcome back." His next question is directed at Ruth and Donna. "All right, I need to know. How did you two get in here?"

Ruth is more guilty-looking than Donna- Donna speaks first. "Ruth told me that there was a strange phenomenon at the school that occurred at midnight, and that she could tell me about it. Of course, I thought it was a joke, but I couldn't pass up the chance."
She sighs. "All I did was wait awake until midnight, and poof, I showed up here."

"And how did you learn about this phenomenon?" Mr. Bennett takes a sip and asks Ruth.

>Ruth this place is dangerous as you can already tell. You need to tell us so more people can't come in here, we might not be able to protect everyone

Eventually, Ruth relents. "I... heard about this place when I received my letter from Olympia. There was a second, smaller letter, that I was told to shred... So I did. Whoever sent that letter knew that I had this 'gift', and wanted me to use it here. They said it was related to my other powers, so I trusted them- they knew me well enough to know that I could see part of the future. It wasn't labeled... part of me thought you sent it, but that's obviously not the case."

David looks at Mr. Bennett nervously. "There are only a few people who could have sent that letter..."

"I don't like any version of those events," the computer teacher grumbles. "But I doubt you can see the future, Ruth."

Ruth seems offended. "Why not? You have these powers, don't you?"

"I would be able to tell. The number of people that can hide power from Merlin is so astronomically low that I can count them on one hand with fingers to spare." He holds up his hand to demonstrate. "Unless you're one of them- which I admit would be reason enough for you to come to Olympia- I have to say I don't believe you. You have the potential to summon a Myth, but not foresight."

Flores still seems miffed that Mr. Bennett doesn't believe her, but lets it go. "So I suppose I should come here to learn about that power, shouldn't I?"

"Yes." He nods. "I suppose our little posse has expanded. We might need to assign a secondary leader if it grows any further."

After explaining most of the basics to the two new girls, he holds up the pen-like object he gave to you earlier. "There's actually a secondary use for these things- it allows you to summon a second Myth, or use your Myth as separate from your own body. It's difficult to do, and I'll need to teach you over some time- but I wanted you to know in case you're cornered. Twist the top until all the lights turn purple, then press the button on the back. If a Curse is wounded badly enough, you might be able to capture them and hold them in this until you can defeat them later. These versions can only hold one at a time, so be careful."

He leans back in his chair, exhausted. "Urgh. Class dismissed. I'm sure you all are tired. Hit the hay and be ready for class."

The others eventually leave, Sofia being the last and looking between you and Mr. Bennett in concern.

With just you two in the room, Mr. Bennett seems a little curious. "Well?" The man in the sunglasses asks.

"No, I'm not. Get used to that, because it's not changing anytime soon. Believe me, that's not a reflection on your character, it's a matter of it literally being illegal for me to tell you certain things."
>What is this school really? If I heard correctly there are other people with powers in this school.
"You know this isn't the original Olympia Academy, right? It was torn down back in the early 80s due to a string of freak incidents that the government covered up. If you want to really know why this school exists, I need you to do well enough at this that the principal can trust you with the whole truth. He went to the original school, he knows how it went down then. We're here to make sure you're not in any danger, either from your powers or from anyone seeking to use you for them."

"At this point, I don't know for sure. Her story does raise a lot of questions, though."

>>How does David know how to summon a Myth?
Bennett halts when you ask this, and covers his face as he breathes in and out deeply, his hands slipping underneath his sunglasses. "It has to do with his accident. He'll tell you when he's ready. David's really self-conscious about what happened, given that he had to have... surgery." Mr. Bennett tries and fails to think of a better way to phrase it. "Don't bring it up unless he does first, will you?"

Eventually, enough time passes that you find yourself unable to ask any more questions. You're exhausted, and feel tired enough to collapse in your bed.

---

In your room, you pass out almost as soon as you slip under the covers. However, instead of dreamless sleep, you find yourself in a room filled with beakers, reagents, and laboratory condensers. A warm fireplace burns large logs in one corner of the room, with a comfortable-looking recliner nearby. Faust hovers separate from you, reading from the Grimm Book next to a bookshelf filled with arcane notes and tomes.

Slamming his book closed, the Myth nods to you.
"This is my laboratory. Here, we will prepare for the trials ahead. I will teach you all of my arcane knowledge, so that we may have the power we need to emerge victorious."

Burning the bear by gripping it in his fist, Faust pours the resulting ash into one of the beakers, then removes the flask the result pours into and tosses it into the summoning circle.
When it hits the floor, the fluid immediately turns to purple smoke, and then a small, rabbit-like stuffed animal hops out of the circle and sniffs at the ground. It's crimson red, and tearing apart in places. Scratching at its ear, it perks its ears and speaks to you.

"Hm? I suppose this is better than being burnt to nothing. Just promise you'll make me a real rabbit, right?"

>Ask Faust about the deal we made. Was that... not normal? The others didn't seem to experience anything like it when they got their Myths.

Faust admits, "We have been given extraordinary power- at a price. As such, we must be willing to pay that price when the time finally comes- or defeat our debt-holder if need be. Your ability to hold multiple Myths is derived from this ability. The price was 'anything', but I believe that the nature of the request allows us to tribute a sufficiently powerful Myth as payment."

He flips through the Grimm Book, looking at the meager entries so far. "So I request you undertake study and sacrifice to achieve this Myth that will fit the requirements. Your bonds will provide it with the power it needs. In the case that we will not be able to pay our debt with a Myth, we will need it- to serve as a weapon against the creature that has made this deal. I know not its true nature, but it is likely malevolent."

"Grease" by Frankie Valli

In English class, you're 'introduced' to a famous book you've already heard of.
"The Grapes of Wrath. It addresses the effects the Great Depression had on American farmers and people in general. It's a 'realist' novel, which means that the author writes with the intent of depicting everyday experiences as they are, instead of portraying them as romanticized or implausibly grim." The prim, glasses-wearing woman teaching looks down on all of you. "I expect you to have your own copy by next Monday- you'll be penalized otherwise."

What the fuck is going on. Did it show up differently? I'll redact this post if need be, but WTF
In your rush to recover from surprise, you blurt out "Pi," and then immediately recant your mistake and state the correct answer after the math teacher begins to get angry.

"Get the lead out, ladies and gentlemen, you're back in school." He's a little disappointed, but suspects it's just summer having an effect on you.
"Though Solomon did stumble, he did eventually get it right. Pi radians is the equivalent of 180 degrees, and cosine represents the x-position a point on a unit circle centered on the origin would have on an x-y graph. So when you move to 90 degrees counterclockwise from the rightmost position, you find your x-position is zero, your y is positive one."

He uses the projector to put the following picture on the board. "Memorize this, it will come in handy on tests. You especially, Read. Make sure you can trust your instincts so you can work quickly on tests."

---

After that little gaffe, you make your way to Computer Studies. David is here again, and he's sitting in the front.
Mr. Bennett is standing in the front, when he gives the class a proposition. "Just to check how far each of you have prior knowledge in programming languages, I'm going to ask you to just write any program you can using the C language. If you're stumped, take a look at the 'Hello world' function and see how you can modify it."

He gives instructions on how to use the compiler and write programs, and you begin to brainstorm.

By popular demand...
Already somewhat experienced in programming, you plan out a program that allows you to save a set of questions and their answers, then run them in order and have input allow for people to answer and get immediate feedback. It runs from command line, it's not complete, and it's not pretty, but it works for now, and you feel proud of yourself.

Mr. Bennett is pretty impressed, and gives you a nod and some pointers as to how to comment and clean up your code while he's looking over it.
"It's important to leave comments in your code, in case you need to come back at a halfway point and you don't remember where you left off. It also allows other people to go back and learn what's going on faster."
(Your Proficiency has increased!)

>>1592583
Before he walks away, you get curious as to how he codes himself, and ask him as much. He thinks for a second, and says, "Well, I can send you some of my old code so you can improve your own- but you should learn to develop and improve your own style."
(Mr. Bennet's old code will give you a one-time +1 modifier to a programming-based challenge, including how to open up his security system.)

"Oh, hi!" He waves eagerly to you when he sees you, and jogs over. "Did you need something?"

He follows you along to view the school store, looking over everything there curiously.
As mentioned way back in the prologue, there is a school general supplies store, selling mechanical pencils, school paper, art and sport supplies, and anything necessary for day-to-day life. The middle-aged woman behind the counter is playing with a yo-yo. "Card or cash?" she mumbles.

After picking out basic utility goods, you realize that some these prices were likely subsidized by the school somewhat- not the more 'luxury' items, but most of the things that might be useful for school activities.

David ultimately decides to pick up some note-keeping paper and pencils as well, and also changes his mind from football to baseball, picking out pickup equipment. He holds up cleats about his size and scans it with his eyes several times before taking it to the register.
"I don't know if I can play school sports, given that I've been homeschooled for so long, but I'd like to at least try to play some baseball." He grins, mocking the swing of a baseball bat with impressive force put behind it. "Do you play any sports?"

>The Arcade.
When you promise your mother you'll tell her about Crescent City, she sends two more texts.
MOM: Good. We love you.
MOM: <B

Even though you're over a thousand miles away from them, you feel a deep connection to your family.
The train shakes due to a small turn, and for a second, you feel like you're flying.
Greedy man, thou seek to take hold of the power to brave the unknown?
Very well... The gift of the Explorer is yours.
Whether your seeking shall give rise to discovery or alienation is to be seen...
...I will be here at the end of your path.

You brace yourself on the bar provided, gripping it tightly and catching the feeling of your heart jumping into your throat. David notices your sudden disorientation, but doesn't say anything.
Once you reach the stop in the center of Crescent City, you have the run of the town. No homework except buying one book, and that's one stop to Black Cover- you can do that when you go work there tomorrow.
So you decide to head for the arcade. You can pick up the book later.

---

Dozens of cabinets and a few air hockey tables fill the dark room at Big Top Arcade. There's even a laser tag arena in the far back. This place stinks like sweating nerds, ozone, flat soft drinks, and thousands upon thousands of manhandled quarters.
It's perfect.

David looks inside as if he were stepping into a whole other world. "Walt told me about these places. He says some people sold drugs at arcades in the past. He also talked about a game called Galungega- Gallagan? Gallen? Whatever. It started with a G."

Evelake points at a machine. "Ah, there it is."
The starfighter game Gattergun has its high scores displayed. Four of them, starting from the high score, read:
>WAL

>BEN
>NET

"No wonder he's not married," you comment.
David merely sighs. "His mother was one of my teachers, and demands he at least meet up with his 'pen pal' when she comes stateside- Apparently they've worked on some stuff together in person while he was in Japan. She's a professional developer for some big Japanese company, and very kind."

He whispers to you as if telling you a secret, a little mischief entering his voice. "I met her once- I think she likes him but is too shy to say anything. As for him... He's unreadable as always, but he's not rude to her or anything."

Setting up to play Gattergun, you find out quickly that the game prevents you from spamming quarters to win- You can only buy four sets of new lives before the game makes you start over when you lose.
You're in the zone and manage to devastate wave after wave of pixelated invaders, trying to approach the fourth row of the ten high score rows. However, every time you think you're getting close, a suicide-diving bee ship crashes into yours when you hesitate for a split second.

During this time, David is amusing himself with Urgent Agents, and he's doing pretty well- so much so that people are stopping to notice. It takes him four levels to lose a single health pack, and he beats the final boss in less than half an hour after he started. He moves onto other games, obviously enchanted by the novelty of the place.

After about an hour and a half, you feel like punching the screen. You've poured nearly half of your allotted arcade money into this stupid cabinet and all you have to show for it is the 7th-highest score. Spurred on by imagining punching Bennett's smug face, you try one more time.
>(8, 9) +1 = 18 SUCCESS
Finally, everything seems to come together, and you break the fourth record, and then the third. You're a couple thousand points away from the second spot when a mother ship mind takes over your vessel while you're dodging a suicide bee. You curse yourself for misjudging the hitbox as GAME OVER flashes on the screen.

(Your Proficiency has increased!)
(Your Proficiency has advanced to Level 2- Decent Dexterity!)

Whatever you put in, you don't think you can beat that score after focusing so hard on it for so long. You still have about ten bucks left in change, so you can do something with it.

Snapping a quick picture on your phone, you call over David to look at your accomplishment. As impressed as he always is, he takes special pains to properly acknowledge your skill.
"Wow! I guess you weren't kidding when you said you played games as a sport." He scratches his head and nods. "Mr. Bennett usually takes one day off every half year to set those scores, because the arcade wipes them at the end of June and December. I'm sure with some luck you can take the top position."

"Want to play some laser tag?"
He nods. "Sure. If it's anything like I'm expecting, I'll be fine." He pays for himself unless you insist, and puts on the equipment without much trouble. However, he seems a little spooked by the fact that the arena is darkened and only lit up in certain places.
"Hey, is it supposed to be like this?" he whispers. "Isn't it, you know, hard for people to see in the dark?"
If you didn't know better, you'd say he's afraid of the dark, but it seems more like he's looking around for someone or something. It might have something to do with his accident.

"RED TEAM, PREPARE YOURSELVES!" the speaker blares, and your suits and laser guns light up with a red glow.

David still acts a little unnerved, but he prepares to try and tag the blue team, hiding behind one of the provided cover pillars.
You know that tagging the enemy bases, one on each side, is worth more points than tagging enemies, but you'll put yourself at more risk.

Soon enough, the countdown begins. Tightening your grip, you listen to the announcer count off the time to the game beginning.

"Orders, Boss?" David asks you, shifting his weight to enter a running stance.

>>Orders?
>We need to go on the offensive.
>We need to stay defensive- wait for them to come to us.
>Cover me, and tag anyone on blue you see.

He nods. "Yes, sir!"
The two of you boldly stride into the midst of the enemy, light scattering to your sides as you make a break for the enemy base.

"Hey, stop them!" one blue team member yells, but David quickly tags them several times and temporarily knocks their blaster out.

You run onto a raised stage where you can see a glowing arch in the center. On the peak of the arch lies the tagging spot for Blue Team's base. You immediately let loose on it, trying to get as many points as you can.

In response, the base starts giving off an alarm indicating your presence, and several enemy team members converge on your location. David is doing his best, but there are so many of them that he can't tag them all. Over half a dozen blue lasers concentrate fire in your direction. One of them manages to tag your suit's shoulder, even as you try and weave out of their line of fire.

"There are too many of them!" David cries from behind cover. "Save yourself!"

You plant your feet and stand your ground against the horde, opening a blazing hail of fire against the blue team scum. Even though they outnumber you three to one, you refuse to back down, and trade two tags for every one of theirs.

However, as time begins to pass, they get re-enforcements, and some of the people you tagged out begin to come back.
You're overwhelmed!
Despite your best efforts, eventually two blue blasts hit your chest marker, one after the other, and your suit flashes in defeat. David goes soon after.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT8m1Rk0oCU

A heroic stand, for sure, but an inevitable defeat. At least until your suit returns to functioning, that is.

---

You two look at the scores outside the arena after the battle. Red won, and you're at the top of your leader-board, with more 'base tags' than 'enemy tags'.

David seems satisfied. "Well, that was fun. Hey, can we do this again sometime?" He seems very eager to return to the arcade. "I really liked it here. I can pay for myself, if it matters."

It's getting pretty late, so you probably won't be able to spend any more time in the city before you have to go back.

"Yes sir, Lieutenant!" he responds as if on instinct, and almost salutes before catching himself and lowering his arm a bit bashfully. "Sorry, I just... Instinct got the best of me, I guess." Everything you learn about David seems to make him stranger and stranger in your mind.

He frowns, looks at his hand, and tries to change the subject immediately. "Yeah, we should really invite the others next time. But it's getting late... we need to rest, right?"
>>1596136
"Call me Boss, would you?"

He nods. "Sure thing, Boss." His grin returns, and despite all of the questions you have about him, you feel you understand him on a bit better.

Greedy man, thou seek to take hold of the power to contemplate the eternal?
Very well... The gift of the Innocent is yours.
Whether your faith shall give rise to hope or despair is to be seen...
...I will be here at the end of your path.

(You have awakened to a bond with David, the Innocent. You feel as though you will find kinship with Myths like him.)

He follows you out of the arcade and onto the train back to Olympia. Despite all the effort you two have made today, he still seems as chipper, clean, and tidy as ever. He whistles, and you feel like you recognize the song from a blues tune you heard once.

---

It's much too late for you to do anything but return to your room at this point. Mr. Bennett's office is closed, and he's left you an apologetic e-mail stating he's got important business he can't stop for.
It's going to rain tomorrow, and you have that Black Cover Bookstore job after school.

There's a thread on Phoenix Ranger Featherman R up- you click on the link in curiosity and are immediatley bombarded by arguing.

As you expected, there's nothing useful to be learned, except that there's an anime convention at Clover Tower on September 8th.
You spend your time until the internet cuts out browsing it anyways, completely forgetting what you were planning on studying.

I'll take it.

Since you bought the books from before, you figure you might as well take a look at the American History book.
>One of the accepted dates for the beginning of the American Revolution is April 19, 1775, when the Battle of Concord and Lexington took place after 700 British soldiers marched to Concord to capture John Hancock and Samuel Adams under the orders of General Thomas Gage. The Sons of Liberty, who Hancock and Adams were part of, called on a continental militia known as the Minutemen to answer the march, though their initial engagement was disastrous for the Patriots.

After a few more pages of reading, you lose interest and soon go to bed, nodding off quickly.

Same time, Sunday at 9PM Central, hopefully until 2AM+.

I'll stick around to answer any questions.
