You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

All right, last time we left off, we had an opportunity to teach Naru a new spell! So we'll do a fresh vote on it!

ALL HEAL: A powerful healing spell that bombards a localized area with energy, healing all those standing in the area of effect. Powerful but likely to drain most if not all of the caster's mana.

SOLAR RAY: One of the few spells devised that takes advantage of the destructive aspects of Sol's light. The caster may project a beam of pure, focused sunlight that will incinerate anything caught in its path.

SANCTUARY: A spell saved for the most dire of times, the caster may create a powerful shield around an individual target, protecting them from any and all harm. However, this works both ways, essentially trapping the target within the protective bubble of energy.

You nod to Nino, and she surreptitiously pulls out a piece of parchment and paper and quickly scribbles down notes, no doubt on how to replicate the particular spell she found. She only barely has enough time to write down the details of that one spell before Solana arrives around the corner.

"Ah, I see you've taken an interest in St. Augustine." She observes with a smile.

"Um, y-yeah!" Nino nods as she slips the parchment under her cloak just in time. "She had a really interesting life!"

"Undoubtedly." Solana nods and then turns to you. "So, where will you be heading off to next? I understand you Templars do love getting straight to the point..."

You point to Nino, and then to the rough direction where the Mage Tower should be in relation to the Church.

"The Mage Tower? Ah, well best of luck then." Solana nods. "They've always been a rather secretive lot."

You shrug. No reason not to try.

"I wonder how they'd react to somebody as brutally straightforward as you." Solana puts a hand up to her mouth to hide her sly smile. "I almost wish I'd be there to see it."

"Are we done yet?" Morgan asks as she pokes her head. "I'm getting the feeling we're overstaying our welcome here."

You nod in agreement an tap Nino's shoulder.

"But-"

No buts. You gently snatch the book out of Nino's hands and lift her up by the collar of her cloak like an unruly cat.

"Awwwww..." Nino moans.

"I hope you come to visit again!" Solana waves cheerfully as you make your leave.

"Assuming the guards don't kick us out." Morgan replies wryly.

"Oh, don't worry about that." Solana replies simply.

With that, you, Morgan, and Nino make your exit from the Church. Just on the other end of the central district was the Mage Tower. Unlike the ivory, gold, and marble construction of the Church, the Tower looked to have been carved completely out of a massive sapphire, its crystal surface twinkling in the sunlight.

That's when you feel Nino take shelter behind you.

"C-can I just wait out here?" She mumbles quietly. "I... I don't wanna go back. What if they take me away from you...?"

You pat Nino's head with your armored gauntlet, reassuring her that you were there to protect her. If the Mages wanted her back, they'd have to go through you. You weren't a Witch Hunter, but you were pretty sure Mages would react to sharpened steel the same way as anything else.

"O-okay." Nino nods, sidling up to you closer than ever, practically attaching herself to your armor. "Let's go then."

You look at Morgan, who just shrugs, and you continue on towards the Tower. Up ahead, you can see a shimmering wall of energy, no doubt the Tower's first line of defense...

You come to a stop when you see who exactly was standing guard at the front entrance. Two short, and very familiar looking Mana Knights.

"J-Justine!" Caroline squeals as he quickly taps the shoulder of her partner. "It's HIM!"

"I can see that, Caroline." Justine says coolly. "I trust you've come to return Nino to us?"

You shake your head resolutely as Nino sticks her tongue out at them.

"We're just here to get some information-" Morgan tries to explain, but it's no use.

"Then we'll have to solve this through force!" Caroline growls as she draws her baton, now glowing with magical energy."

"Indeed." Justine nods, her tome already flipping open, ready to recite a spell.

Fortunately, you happen to excel in force. After all, that was one of the main tenets of being Templar. You draw your halberd. At the same time, Morgan readies her bow and Nino's eyes begin to glow with energy.

"It's three on two, so we have the advantage in numbers." Morgan whispers.

"Caroline's the better fighter, but Justine's a really scary caster." Nino warns you. "They're not pushovers!"

You eye both Mage Knights warily. As Nino said, Caroline was the fighter and Justine was the caster. That much was clear with their preferred weapons.

Caroline would be a better match for you, since she probably didn't have as many magical attacks as Justine would, but since you both excelled in physical fighting, there was a good chance you'd both get caught in stalemate.

Justine, on the other hand, was a powerful caster, but didn't have much in the way of close range defense. Perhaps if you were quick enough, you could take her out of action...

You stride towards Caroline, intent on making her your opponent. Caroline seems to grin at the challenge, her baton glowing with an ominous blue energy.

Nino and Morgan meanwhile move off to handle Justine, who unleashes an ice blast at them. Nino manages to counter the attach with her own magic, sending another signature fireball to intercept as Morgan tries to get another shot.

Caroline brings her baton crashing down in a downward swing, which makes it easy to block with the shaft of your halberd. You feel the thick impact but your halberd holds. You're about to counterattack when you feel a stinging sensation in your fingers.

It's then that you realize that the shaft of your halberd has iced over, locking your hands to it. while not too debilitating, it would certainly limit your options when it came to attacking. You wouldn't be able to use long ranged swings, instead limited to short range pivots or awkward thrusts with the spear point. Certainly inconvenient.

"Haha, don't underestimate a Mage Knight, Templar!" Caroline cackles, her baton still at the ready.

Okay, so her weapon will ice up whatever it hits. Good to know.

Unfortunately, you didn't have time to keep track of the battle between Nino, Morgan, and Justine. Other than the sounds of explosions and magical spells being flung in all directions.

>You now have 2 points!

However, Caroline was just a bit too aggressive, and you manage to find an opening to punish her. You slam the shaft of your halberd right into Caroline's chestplate, not only forcing her back and knocking the air out of her, but also smashing off the layer of ice that had been impeding your hands.

"Not bad, Templar." Caroline coughs. "You're starting to make me want to go all out!"

Her baton then begins to glow a different color. Instead of the cold blue, you could see a layer of rock growing over her baton like a bread crust. Adding weight for more blunt force? You'd have to be cautious of that.

Meanwhile you feel another blast of heat behind you. No doubt that little magical battle was still going on.

With more freedom of movement, you swing your halberd in a wide arc, catching Caroline in the side with a solid hit. You can feel the impact as it connects with her armor, sending a shock through her whole body. Her legs buckle and she collapses to the ground, her baton clattering to the ground. She was down for the moment.

You take a quick glance at the other battle. Justine to her credit seemed to be holding her own against both Nino and Morgan, deftly repelling both Nino's magic and Morgan's arrows while belting out offensive spells of her own, keeping your two companions from being able to catch their breaths.

Perhaps if you intervened, you could all overwhelm Justine, but that would mean leaving Caroline at your back...

You rush forward and plant your armored foot down on Caroline's back, preventing her from being able to get up to her foot or retrieve her baton.

"Nnnngh! Get off me!" Caroline whines as she thrashes about, trying to wriggle out from under your foot. But you would not be swayed.

Meanwhile, the battle between Justine, Nino, and Morgan continued to rage on...

Nino tries to attack first, sending a fireball flying at Justine. However, Justine counters with a massive ice lance, which shoots forward and punches clean through the fireball, causing Nino to yelp in alarm as she dives to avoid the icy projectile.

Justine then prepares a second spell to follow up, but Morgan is just as quick, aiming an arrow straight at Justine, leaving the both of them in a standoff.

"What in the world is going on here?!?" You hear a woman yell.

That's when everybody pauses and stops. Caroline, Justine, and Nino's faces go white, while Morgan has a confused and concerned expression on her face when the newcomer steps in.

It's then that you realize that your little skirmish has drawn quite a large crowd. All of them standing at a safe distance, of course, but still an audience nonetheless.

And they had all parted to make way for a blue haired girl, a stern look on her face. She was wearing light armor, but was armed with a formidable looking sword that was thankfully sheathed.

You also note the small, golden crown adorning her head.

"P-Princess!" Caroline sputters.

"O-our apologies." Justine immediately bows. Even she was shaken, a crack showing in her normally calm demeanor.

"I'd like an explanation, please." The Princess says grimly, her hand resting securely on the hilt of her sword.

You step off Caroline's back, letting her scramble back to her feet. You stay silent, intending to let these twins try to explain the situation and make fools of themselves.

"W-well, you see, Princess..." Caroline stammers.

"We were attempting to apprehend a fugitive mage." Justine finishes, pointing to Nino.

"A fugitive mage, you say?" The Princess raises an eye brow, and then looks up at the Tower. "If that's the case, what fugitive would willingly walk to the front gates of the Tower?"

"Erm, well..." Caroline sputters.

"..." Even Justine has nothing to say.

"So what you're really saying is that you two attacked a trio of visitors, creating a public disturbance in my city, not to mention tarnishing the reputation of the Mage Guild, for no reason?" The Princess steps forward, her smile containing no joy at all. Only threat.

"U-u-u-um..." Both Caroline and Justine recoil in fear.

"The Archmagus will hear of this." The Princess huffs and then turns to you. "My apologies, Templar. I'm Princess Lucina Eisenwand, the er... leader of this fine city."

You immediately bend your knee to this newcomer. Even though the Templar order was independent and swore no fealty to any one kingdom, it was still heavily indoctrinated in all recruits that showing deference to royalty was the polite thing to do.

"A-ah, that's really not necessary!" Lucina says quickly, trying to maintain her composure. "Rise, Templar!"

You nod and follow her order, standing back up to your feet.

"Let us continue this discussion inside." Lucina huffs as she strides forward. She waves her arm and the shimmering barrier barring access to the Tower winks out. Apparently she knew how to open it. Was she a Mage Knight herself...?

"C'mon!" Nino hisses as she tugs at your arm.

Meanwhile, Caroline and Justine reluctantly follow Lucina through the barrier. You, Nino, and Morgan don't really have any other choice than to trail behind them.

"I've warned you two before about causing trouble in the city." Lucina grunts as your odd little group heads toward the Tower. "I think I will recommend a harsher punishment from the Archmagus this time."

You can see Caroline and Justine visibly sweating now.

You stay silent. After all, it's not your place to determine what sort of punishment they were entitled to.

"Y-yes, Princess." Caroline whimpers.

"As you command." Justine says with resignation.

"And you, Templar." Lucina turns her eye to you. "What business do you have with the Mages? It's not often one sees a Templar requiring our services."

You point to Nino. You were here to inquire more details about her true nature.

"Ah... it's about our wayward mage here." Lucina nods, finally understanding. "Well, I do wish you luck on that endeavor. The high magi are always notoriously tight lipped.

You nod. You were certainly sure of that.

But you still had questions that needed to be answered. Answers that you could only get from the Mage's inner circle. If it helped you understand Nino better, then you wouldn't hesitate to knock down any obstacle in your way.
