You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You grimace as you look on as hundreds or even thousands of Abyssal worker forms skitter and crawl across the surface the the massive colossus they were building. You could only see the single hand from where you were, but judging from that alone this thing would make the Leviathan you fought in Singapore look like an earthworm.

Was this what Mulberry meant when she warned you that old ship hulls still had a dormant power in them?

You quickly turn around to check on your signal. Anna's beacon was still active, but you noted with concern that it was much dimmer... a little more distant. You didn't remember moving THAT far. Then again, you had heard that the laws of physics in the Dark Zone were always pretty vague and pliable, so maybe that had something to do with it?

Or was something going on outside?

Since they're making a Colossus, does that mean our R&D team should make a giant Shipgirl controlled robot to combat it in a Super Sentai like fashion with costumes and explosions?

So far it sounds like the impact might have hit the Captains cabin while he/she was asleep. The damage is enough I'm worried they might end up scrapping her.

Hate to say this, but with that level of damage, and a collision at sea at 0230 local? They're almost certainly dead.

IIRC, the damage to the Cole (besides the area blown open) was more flame/shrapnel damage than anything. More damaging to meatbags than the ship itself.

The Fitz could have serious structural damage to multiple hull frames, which is a lot more costly to repair than plating over a hole in the hull and repairing/replacing internal fittings damaged by fire/shrapnel.

Hope I'm wrong, though.

You decide that this was more than enough intel to take back to the Admiral, and any attempts a further penetration was too much unnecessary risk. You were in the middle of enemy territory, after all. You snap a few pictures with the camera you had been provided. Hopefully it would remain in good shape on the trip back.

It's simple for you to slink back to where the rest of your squadron was. However, you immediately notice that there was someone missing.

"Where's Sam?" You hiss.

"She just fuckin' took off!" Woel hisses back, pointing out into the darkness. "Not even a single word! Before we knew it, she was gone!"

"I tried to keep track of her but she started using her stealth field..." Paz mumbles, apparently ashamed at her perceived failure.

"Don't worry about it, Paz." You pat her head to reassure her. "There's not much you can do in a place like this."

"I figured it'd be better to wait for you to get back before we did anything rash." San Fran sighs. "And from how white your face is, I'm guessing that you saw something pretty damn serious."

"The Abyssals are using ship hulls to build... something." You nod. "Something really, REALLY big."

"Shit." San Fran grunts. "Look, I'm all for finding Sam and dragging her ass back home so we kick the crap out of later, but we need to get that intel out and to the proper people.

She did have a point. Then again, if you all searched for Sam, you'd have a better chance of finding her.

Then again, in a place like this, maybe a smaller search group would be better...

"Goddamnit, we can't leave without her." You grunt. "And I don't think we should be splitting up, so we'll search for her together."

"Whatever you say." San Fran sighs, obviously not fully agreeing with your decision but going along with it anyways.

"She owes us sooooo much ice cream for putting us through this trouble." Woel scowls as she cracks her knuckles.

"Yeah! No shipgirl left behind!" Paz chirps.

"All right, I'm pretty sure she'd be going this way." You point to the same heading that Sam had been attracted to before. Your radar wasn't picking up any contacts, but then again, who knows if that meant anything in Abyssal home turf.

Your little squadron spreads out in a search formation, but stick close enough to remain in visual contact for obvious reasons, especially in the gloom and stillness of this place. The thin crust of ice layered over the frozen sea cracks and crumbles around your feet as you push through. A cold mist begins to flow in, further hampering visibility.

Another quick check behind you shows Anna's beacon steadily growing smaller and dimmer. Barely a flickering flame compared to the miniature sun it was before.

"Hey! Big Sis!" Paz whispers to you. "I can start sending up my planes! They're really good at recon! And they're stealth, too! So the Abyssals shouldn't be able to spot them!"

Well, she had a point. Some air recon would be REALLY helpful. Still, it was a risk, though...

"Paz, send up some planes." You instruct her. "We need to get this done fast."

"Okay!" Paz nods as she closes her eyes. You see her Rig reconfigure itself, changing up to a full carrier deck. Interestingly, you see that she's not using her railgun to launch her fighters as she normally does, impressively intuiting that it was best to remain as quiet and low profile as possible. Instead, her F-35s took off under their own power, using their newfangled engines to float straight up before heading out.

You still haven't gotten used to seeing that.

"I think I found something!" She chirps happily. "One of them is picking up a thermal signal just a few kilometers away!"

"Okay, let's go!" You nod.

You follow Paz's lead as you continue onward through the chilling mist. The temperature, you noted, was dropping rapidly. Frost and rime began to build up on your Rig, and your hairs began to stand on their ends. You look to your fellow shipgirls, and noted that they were starting to feel the effects as well.

The fog then grows thicker and and thicker. So thick that you can't even seen a few inches in front of you, much less your companions.

"Paz?" You call out.

No answer.

"Woel?"

No answer.

"S-San Fran?" You start to panic.

Just silence.

You quickly check your datalink. Nothing. Nothing but darkness all around you.

Shit shit shit. Again, a pit drops in your stomach as you realize you were now completely lost.

However, as if on cue, the mist suddenly begins to clear away, revealing...

And just ahead, you see a cold, lonely island, illuminated by a towering lighthouse standing watch over the area. On the island itself, you see an ugly, squat, concrete building erected on the very top. A building that was instantly familiar to you.

Alcatraz.

What the hell was going on? You were pretty sure out of all the things the Abyssals stole, fucking ALCATRAZ wouldn't be one of them. And you couldn't fathom a reason why they would build an almost exactly copy of it, either.

But, well, you knew Alcatraz was a prison, and if prisons were meant for anything, it was to keep something locked inside...

You take a look back, your rear shrouded in that same impenetrable mist. Just as opaque and mysterious as it ever was.

Back on the island, you didn't see any immediate signs of life, much less hostile activity. Was the place abandoned?

All right, time to investigate. You had to figure out what the hell was going on here, and you figure that turning back into the mist wasn't going to help much anyways.

You make a quick scan of the immediate area, looking for any possible approaches. The dock was the first and most obvious place to land at, but you spotted signs of movement. Possible guards or hostiles?

You also saw a small sewage pipe jutting out of the rocks. A more stealthy way to get inside.

However, you found your attention oddly being drawn to the light tower itself, of which you saw a narrow path snaking up to it. There, a solitary figure, illuminated against the lighthouse, stood, apparently staring at you.

You cautiously sail up to the island towards the side with the lighthouse. Conveniently enough, there seemed to be a set of stairs hewn into the rock, leading up to the structure. Like they were placed there just for you.

You scale the stairs, still Rigged up and your weapons ready just in case. The air gets clearer, but also colder and crisper. Finally, you reach the top, and see a man, his back to you as he looks out over the cliff to the black waters below.

Actually, now that you were looking from this angle, this sight looked somewhat familiar.

"Well, well, I can't say I'm surprised to see you here." The man chuckles, his voice instantly recognizable as the one that beckoned you from that black beach so long ago.

"The hell are you doing here?!" You scowl as you raise your gun, still suspicious of this "man."

"Oh, don't worry, we're still on the same side." The man chuckles, still not turning to face you, his figure shrouded in the shadow of the lighthouse. "I in fact erected this place to protect our mutual, angry little friend."

"Sam?!" You blink. "Where is she?!"

"In the prison, of course. Unlocking its deepest, darkest secrets." The man says slyly. "Secrets she should already know, but alas, humans and shipgirls are always odd creatures, forgetting or ignoring what's right in front of them."

The man's sinister chuckle echoes along with the crashing waves.

"I find it odd that you here in the Dark Zone, of all places." You grimace as you reluctantly lower your gun. You have the ugly feeling it'll do no good for you against him.

"Well, Mulberry was on the right track when she told you that shipgirls and Abyssals have more in common than you all think." The man replies. You can just imagine an incredibly smug smile floating in the darkness.

"You mind clarifying that a bit?" You scowl.

"Let's just say, there's a little 'bet' going on. Which side of the coin is better?" The man chuckles again. "Though I never thought those humans would go so far as to make not just one, but TWO shipgirls completely out of scratch! That certainly ruffled quite a few feathers!"

"Is this all some sort of game to you?" You growl, taking an aggressive step forward. "We're just pieces to be thrown around and gambled with?"

"Games can have stakes too, you know." The man points out. "I've got a lot riding on you girls winning this, you know! It wasn't easy pulling your souls out from the nether!"

You were still trying to process what the hell this guy was saying when your train of thought is interrupted by a dull booming sound at the base of the cliff, shaking the very rock under you. The unmistakable sound of an explosion. You look back down below, and you see dozens of dark shapes emerge from the mist. Abyssals.

"Well, it looks like they found us out." The man sighs. "And that silly Samuel seems to be taking her time. I didn't want to do this..."

The man then snaps his fingers, and suddenly, Woel, San Fran, and Paz all emerge from the fog as well, right on the flank of the Abyssal attack force.

To their credit, they don't waste any time and start blasting away, their guns flashing in the darkness and drawing the Abyssal's attention away from the island for the moment.

"Well, we're on a timer now, I'm afraid." The man sighs. "It's a shame, I was just about to get to the good part."

Damnit! You don't have any time to argue as you spin around dash for the prison. However, the place was HUGE. You didn't even know the first place to-

"I would try heading for the lowest level!" The man calls out cheerfully.

Fucker planned that, didn't he?

Regardless, you continue to press onward against the backdrop of cannon fire. You can hear the shrieks of F-35 engines and missiles as they rain down death from above. A quick check on the datalink showed Woel, Paz, and San Fran holding their own against the Abyssals, who just seemed to be generic destroyer and cruiser combat forms. No Princesses.

Yet, at least.

You reach one of the prison entrances, blocked off by a rusted iron door, and you easily kick it down in one go as you dive in the depths of this simulacra of Alcatraz...

Fortunately, you don't seem to find any sort of resistance. It's just empty, rusted hallways all the way through. Perhaps your mysterious benefactor dismissed the guards?

Or maybe they were just never meant for you.

Soon enough, you seem to reach the lowest level room you can find. A circular, steel lined chamber, with a massive steel box placed at the center. There as a door built into the box, sealed shut by a heavy steel bar. You could hear something beating, pounding from within.

And in front of the door stood Sam, staring at it with an almost blank look, her halfway raised as if she wanted to open it, but couldn't bring herself to. Meanwhile, whatever was inside continued to relentlessly pound away.

"Oh, hey." Sam says as she realizes you've entered, her voice tired and weak. As if she'd been wandering the prison for days. "Didn't expect to see you here."

"Sam, the fuck is going on here?" You ask as you step forward.

"Heh, that creepy ass guy said the answers I'm looking for are in that cell." Sam points to the barred door. "Simple right? But I can't bring myself to open it..."

"Sam, we don't have time, we've got Abyssals bearing down on this place!" You urge.

"That's silly, right?" Sam laughs nervously, as if she didn't even hear your warning. "I-It's like I'm scared to see what's inside, or something!"

Oh god the last thing you needed now was for Sam to lose it...

You're not prepared for a goddamn ship anchor to fly out the door, slamming you right in the chest and sending you flying back into the steel wall of the chamber with a loud THUD, knocking the air out of you.

Sam only looks on in horror as... Sam waltzes out of the cell.

But this Sam was different. Her body was covered in scars, and her head obscured by the hood of her coat except for the manic smile as she rigs up.

"What's the matter?" Evil Sam giggles as she walks right up Sam. "Isn't this what you wanted? To let me out?"

"N-no." Sam stammers, frozen like a deer.

"Oh, poor little Sammy." Evil Sam coos as she hugs her. "Don't worry, I'll make them pay. I'll make them ALL pay for what they did to us."

Evil Sam's gaze then falls upon you, still downed and dazed by the hit.

"Maybe I'll start with our dear sister here who got us killed the first time? That'll be a good start, don't you think?"

"P-please stop." Sam whimpers, unable to do much else.

"Why don't you stop me, then?" Evil Sam giggles as she raises her arm. Her anchor levitates off your chest and snaps back to her hand. "You're supposed to be the one in control, right?"

"H-Hoel?" Sam blinks, as if starting to rise out of her funk.

"Shut up!" Evil Sam hisses at you as she starts approaching, her anchor dragging along the stone floor.

"C'mon! You gonna let this bitch walk all over you?!" You continue, scrambling backwards to try and put as much distance between you and Evil Sam. "Since when did ya become such a PUSSY!?!"

"I-I'm not afraid!" Sam retorts as she takes a step forward. At the same time, Evil Sam freezes in place.

"Oh you BITCH." Evil Sam curses at you. "I should've just fucking oneshot you!"

"Hey! I'm the one you should be paying attention to!" Sam growls as she steps forward confidently now, Rigged up and anchor drawn. "I don't care what you do to me, but you don't mess with my sister!"

"SISTER?" Evil Sam tries not to burst out in laughter. "HER? After what SHE and the others did to us? Leading us around by the nose and then leaving us to die? Just like those old Navy farts who kept ordering us around?!"

"It wasn't like that!" Sam yells back. "And I feel like shit for ever thinking that in the first place!"

"Weak as always." Evil Sam turns away from you to face her counterpart. "Guess we'll have to do this the hard way, then."

Thankfully, Evil Sam's first instinct is to raise her anchor to defend against Sam's frontal attack. You take advantage of the opening to whack her in the back with your bat with a healthy, meaty THUNK. Evil Sam shrieks and flinches, her guard broken as Sam screams, slamming her anchor straight down on her doppelganger.

There's a BANG and a flash of light. When you regain your sight, you find yourself lying on the stone floor next to Sam. Both Evil Sam and the steel cell were gone.

"Well well, it looks like all little Samuel needed was a bit of encouragement." That voice chuckles, echoing throughout the chamber. "My apologies for putting you through all this trouble. Though alas, I suppose that's always the risk the beta run takes."

"The WHAT?" Sam blinks.

"You wouldn't believe how complex it is to raise a shipgirl!" The voice sighs. "I may have... missed a few components on the first run that caused some... behavioral issues. But it all worked out in the end, right?"

"How about you show yourself so I can shove this anchor up your ass?" Sam grimaces.

Yeah, she was definitely back to normal.

"Oh dear, look at the time! Perhaps you should all be going along now!" The voice continues and you hear a finger snap. The ground shakes as the prison, and the island it was sitting on, begins to dissolve around you.

"Best of luck getting back outside!" The voice chuckles as it starts to fade out.

Fuck. As much as you wanted to wring more answers out of this bastards, you remembered that you were still in the middle of the goddamn Dark Zone, and under attack from Abyssals.

"Hoel! Sam!" Woel speeds in, covered in cuts and minor burns from the battle. "Finally fucking found you!"

"What's the situation?" You ask, making sure you're fully Rigged up.

"We managed to beat back that Abyssal patrol, but they'll be back soon." San Fran grunts as she sails in. "And that weird mist that's been hanging around is starting to dissipate."

"And where did that island go?" Woel asks, looking around.

"Long story." You and Sam say in unison.

"Big Sis! Little Sis!" Paz wails as she dives in, hugging you both. "I was so worried!"

"Haha, thanks Paz." You grin.

"Personal... SPACE!" Sam croaks.

"Anyways, we really should be going." San Fran reminds you. "NOW."

She then points to the horizon, where you could already see an entire Abyssal battlefleet bearing down on you. Abyssals of all classes and types, regular and Princess, as well as clouds of Abyssal planes.

And leading the charge was one very familiar Destroyer Princess.

"Shit, let's go!" You nod as you orient yourself to Anna's beacon, now just barely visible again.

"I'll provide cover!" Paz nods. "Just tell me what to do!"

"Paz! Take down those planes!" You order.

"Roger roger! Defensive fire activate!" Paz winks as her Rig begins to shift again. Missile launchers and CIWS turrets pop into place and open up, sending up a wall of missiles and tracers into the oncoming cloud.

Explosions ripple across the sky as Abyssal fighters are downed by the dozens, no match for the modern firepower the supercarrier can bring to bear. Meanwhile, her F-35s attack from above, relentlessly dumping missile after missile into the unsuspecting fighters.

However, while the air battle is being decisively stalled, nothing stops the Destroyer Princess from closing the distance at a frightening pace. Even with your head start, the slower and San Fran and Sam wouldn't be able to break contact.

"Ha, I can take that poser!" Woel offers.

Both you and Woel open fire with your cannons. However, your shots seem to fall a little wide as the DD Princess' wild maneuvering throws your aim off.

Woel, however, is right on target, bracketing the DD Princess before nailing her square in the chest with a pinpoint cannon hit. The DD Princess recoils, but isn't out of the fight by a long shot.

"C'mon, we can finish her off!" Woel whoops.

You, you could continue to engage the DD Princess, but you'd have to be careful. The rest of the Abyssal fleet was continuing to close in and would catch up eventually if you remained committed...

Fortunately, it seemed as if the hit the DD Princess took really dazed her, as her attempts to fire at you or even just catch up to your formation fall short, and she steadily falls behind as you all gain distance.

All the while, Anna's beacon gets brighter and brighter. A sure sign that you were getting close. However, that also meant there would be one more obstacle in your way.

The Storm Wall.

"Um, San Fran, have you ever tried to sail through the Stormwall at flank speed?" You ask the cruiser.

"Hell no. Why would anybody do tha-" San Fran gives you a horrified look. "No way you're thinking of-"

Hitting the Storm Wall at full speed was pretty much like running straight into a brick wall. You are immediately buffed by high winds and waves ,making traversal difficult. Meanwhile Paz recovers her planes and follows you all in.

However, the flipside was that the Abyssals didn't seem to be in any mood to pursue your group, and you all manage to make it out to the other side of the Storm Wall. You all breathe a sight of relief before noticing that the real world has gone dark too, the sun apparently having gone down long ago.

And there was Anna, you immediately dashes forward and hugs you, her antenna twitching wildly.

"HOEEEEEEEL!" She cries. "You're okaaaaaaay!"

"Of course I am." You chuckle as you return the hug. "Is there anything else?"

"Getting that intel back to base." San Fran reminds you.

Hopefully this intel was worth the risk you all took.

"Hmmmm." Anna pauses as she looks over Sam, her antenna continuing to twitch wildly. "Sam, did something change about you?"

"Uh, I guess." Sam shrugs.

"I'm serious! You feel... different!" Anna insists.

"Maybe a story for another day." Sam shrugs as she takes a sip of coffee from a thermos she had somehow pulled out from where.

"H-hey!" Anna pouts at Sam stealing her precious coffee.

Well, looks like things were back to normal for now. Well, at least until you finally got chance to report back to the Admiral...
