The harbor is... it looks brand new. Quite massive and modern, considering how few ships are anchored at the moment, making it look even larger than it is.

Well, as the rest of the fleet throws anchor on it, about 1/5th of it becomes full, which only goes to further show the huge size of the infraestructure.

We are keeping a few ships in the air at all times, though. Just in case.

The large grey stone blocks the harbor is built with are nicely cut and placed with just barely visible seams between them, suggesting very good craftmanship... if we didn't know it is possible for a [Craftsman] to do so with magic but... while it is possible to pave a road section for repairs, can you actually build a whole road or building that way?

With the death of the vizir, it looks as if the Alquian welcoming comittee is having quite a bit of trouble deciding on what to do, but after a few minutes, a young man (likely an ape or monkey beastkin, it seems) walks forth and introduces humself as the son of the recently deceased vizir.

He bows deeply as he welcomes Mako, and soon the officers and nobles behind him imitate his actions.

We inroduce ourselves as the duke of Mantequira, and emissary of the empire, then hand over the documents Ren gave us to act as proof, to the young noble.

He receives them with both hands, and examines the seal before opening the scroll.

"I have indeed received your credentials, and testify to their authenticity." - he says - "Thank you for escorting her highness to us."

The local troops, that had been waiting with halted breath, erupt in cheers as the authenticity of Mako's claim is confirmed.

The news spread through the city kuje the wind, and by the time we make it into the ancient palace (in a somewhat surprising yet not too surprising not!Arabian style), the streets are crowded with the locals, having come out to witness the arrival of the princess.

The young man, who identifies himself as Wasi Al Sadiq(*), acts as our guide to the palace and its insides.

"It will take at least a month to prepare a proper ceremony of enthronement for her majesty." - he explains- "Please rest as much as possible, for this servant is sure she will have much to do in the near future."

With that, Wasi bows deeply and waits until we close the doors of the room.

It is as large as you'd expect for an empress, large enough for two school rooms to fit inside.

The furniture looks as if it had been well taken care of every day regardless of the room being used or not, and it smells slightly of perfumed incense.

The bed is beyond kind size... should we call it empress-size? It has four posts at its feet and head, and while there's numerous karge pillows that we recognize as beanbag chairs, there's only a few large full body mirros near a corner, with a couple of young slaves standing at attention next to a long closet and a folded wooden screen.

Eh... they're guys, though. Somehow, our expectations feel slightly betrayed? No, with the empress at the top, I guess this should have been as expected?

They look strong and are dressed in thick but soft-looking pants, leaving their upper bodies exposed. Their hair is pulled back in dreads.

They are both beastkin, though one is a wolfkin and the other is a bird type.

Since they are males, their heads are animal-like.

As we call out our pets, they spread around the large room, and soon enough, Mai finds a pressure plate that opens a hidden door leading to a large bath room, while Tanis finds another in the opposite end of the room, leading to an even larger room with a number of coulmns and arcs in a circle around the center, with numerous small rooms around it, each containing just a large beanbag seat, large enough to act as a bed. There's a small plaza in the center, wih an open roof, and a large fountain in its middle...

It's that, isn't it? A harem.

Eh... why is the door hidden? Is it a fashion ting? The bathroom's was also hidden, so its probably a fashion thing, right?

There's as many as twenty three small rooms. That's rather impressive... I think, From history books, I know the emperor of ancient china had a harem of 1 girl for each day of the year, and tales of arabian pashas and indu marajahs with hundreds or more are not that rare... Yeah, 30 or so aren't that many, I guess?

By the way, the 'younger' harpies happily and immediately went into the pool- I mean, bathroom to play in the water.

"Hmm... " - Ami is looking up at the roof, then casually steps in some sculptures ingained on the walls, climbing up as if every little nook and cranny of the sculpture was there for her hands and feet to begin with. She pushes aside a pannel, and climbs unto a secret space over the rooms.

"Just like home." -says Mako with a relaxed, fluffy mood around her
"Is that so?"

She nods nods to us.

Right, she's used to Ami and Mai watching from above, eh?

There's some noise coming from the roof, and after a few moments, Ami jumps back down, followed by seven more young women. They're younger than Ami, but older than ourselves.

It's not hard to guess that these are the local shadows, as they kneel in front of Mako and wait for instructions.

Their clothes look more rugged than those of the shadows we know already, yet are also just as flashy and exhuberant.

Ah, I wonder if there's any real difference between monkey beastking and human...? No, there probably is, I mean, we're descended from apes, right?

They too seem to be beastkin... I guess some kind of monkey? It seems beastkin are the vast majority in Alquia, though we have seen several humans as well.

Ah, it reminds us of how Ami and Mai used to complete each other's phrases all the time before.

Well, they still do, but somehow they just don't show up together that much any more. It's always one while the other keeps watch, isn't it?

As we expected, they introduce themselves as the empress' shadows. After the death of the last empress, the shadows had continued to train and serve the empire through the vizir, and these are simply the latest group.

Uhmm... checking at their character sheets, their level is not 'bad' but its not 'great' either. Well, our standards are a little unfair, I guess.

They're pretty high leveled for someone who trained the traditional way.

Mako seems quite happy to see them, though.

"I have, new sisters!" -she says, with a smile like the sun came out from behind the clouds

Is that how it is for her?

Well, they're slightly older than her, but younger than Ami and Mai... so she thinks of them as sisters, just like that?

To her, shadows are caretakers she can trust. To Ren, they're a part of her very being.

"These are" - our lovely black haired princess declares - "Eldric, Lyann and Aritsu. I love them all very much."

So matter of fact, this princess...

"These are Ami and Mai." -she continues- "They are our older sisters."

The Alquian shadows (I guess they're 'just shadows' now) nod at once.

They accepted it so easy-like!

I guess it's that, isn't it? The 'if you say so' and the 'day is night and night is day on your say so' attitude?

Uhmm.. they're all basically clones of each other when it comes to attributes, aren't they? Also, they're in the upper 80's of their slave class, so we could rise them up to scion easily enough if we wanted to... let's wait for a bit first, though.

Ah, what do we do about the extra rooms, if we do anything about them at all?

Our pets don't really need a room. They have our [Menagerie] after all.

As for Aritsu and Lyann, it won't hurt to have their own rooms in case they ever need a little privavy for whatever reason. Plus it lets us tease them with harem play. Yup, this has no bad side whatsoever.

Speaking of which, they're already blushing in such a pretty manner. Let's give Aritsu a little kiss.

"What's wrong? Don't you want your own room?"
"Eh... b-but president, I thought..."

We give her a little kiss and hug her.

"Ah! Let's eat." - Mako is really a 'my pace' kind of girl, uh? She's not flustered at all by seeing us cuddle with other girls.

She gets all red and cute whenever we do so with her, though.

In the end, we have a light lunch by the side of the fountain in the harem's 'garden'.

It's surprisingly nice here. The fountain has been sculpted so that the water produces a musical sound as it flows down, and the open roof lets in light in a wide and gentle beam that bathes the area in a warm glow.

By the way, the two attendants in the room are Sasha and Mario, for the bird and wolf kin, respectively.

Somehow, it feels a little out of place in a not!Arabia culture, but they were bought at a very young age by the previous empress and were sort of adopted by her as her personnal attendants.

Sadly, she passed away just four years after doing so, and they were never reassigned to any other place of the palace. They simply kept the room clean and ready at all times.

It seems that important positions in government are often assigned to slaves owned by the throne, directly, so if the empress was alive today, they probably would be architects or commanders by now.

Eh, it reminds me of the janissary of our previous world, minus the eunuch part. Should I think of it as some sort of orphanage?

Anyway, both Sasha and Mario seem extremely polite and happy to serve Mako now. It seems she really looks a lot like the former empress in their eyes.

Ah, they're pretty low level, but their mental stats are very high, and they both have at least three crafter classes each.

And so, one of the things we talk about with Wasi al Sadiq, was about Mario and Sasha's reassignment to administrative positions, followed by a examination of the prisoners' list after the battle with the prototype ships.

Indeed, it turns out that most of the staff was 'house personnel' from nobles of the hawk faction, and were not in fact army (or navy in this case) personnel.

What to do with them, then?

Oh, we're finally alone. Well, alone is a bit of a stretch since we're with Aritsu, Lyann, Mako and our pets, so it is quite the lively room(s), though.

"Eldric, I'm really nervous." - says Mako- "You know, when mom asked, I said I didn't want to be the empress..." -she says from next to us

We hold her hand and squeeze it gently.

"You'll do great. You are smart and kind. They're very lucky."
"Really?" -she smiles while blushing
"Yes. Definitively."

We lean over and kiss her, holding her pretty face with the tip of our fingers. It is a gentle kiss that turns into an adult kiss.

"Uuuh... I feel a bit better now."
"Alright."
"E-eldric, I feel better now." -she says softly
"Alright."
"You don't need to... kiss... ah!"
"But you're so lovely, I want to."

Aritsu looks at us and sighs softly, then picks up the documents from the low table and looks through them.

She doesn't seems to mind us kissing Mako just a couple of feet away. As expected from our super efficient secr- I mean, elven princess!

Ah somehow she looks really sexy when she's working seriously. She pulled her twintails into a single ponytail behind her head, and calmly looks at the documents in front of her while sitting all prim and proper.

Indeed, after examining the papers with Aritsu and our cute harpies (dressed in their secretary uniform, of course), we see that almost all of the names in there share just a few surnames, indicating the houses they owe allegiance to.

This of course excludes the simplest and lowest jobs, such as powder monkeys and cooks.

Uhm... so, its 6 nobles, uh? I think its rather impressive that 6 families were able to gather enough money and resources to build those ships but... maybe it really isn't? I mean, theres [Craftsmen] as a 'job' in this world, so isn't labor cheaper than back in our old world?

Anyway, we're finishing with the documents when a servant (oh, a human, at last) comes by and informs us that Wasi has arranged a room for us to meet with the former minister's 'pet'.

This is a stable, isn't it?

Indeed, we have been led to a rather grand stable in one of the regiments next to the palace. It seems to be the house of the palace guards, by the way.

Anyway, the stables are quite large, and there's a large number of gryphons, one per stall. The stalls are basically a nest each, with rocks and sticks as well as vines and other plant matter. Well, if you think about it, a gryphon would have a largenest, but the aviary at the keep back home was already empty when we saw it.

We are led forth before the rows of gryphons until we reach a stall where a succubuss is sitting while hugging her legs close to her body.

She's milky white, with very light blue hair and white horns. Well, almost all of them have black horns, though, with the exception of Dusk, so I guess it's rare but not THAT rare.

Come think about it, Dusk also has white hair and skin, so I guess it depends on skin color? Most have blue, pink or red skin tones, with a few that are purple or in other bright tones, though they all have black horns.

Ah, her horns are rather cute, somehow. They each have a small branch on the side that points to each other, and it curves down slightly, which sort of makes out the shape of a heart.

She has this dark mood around her, with a thick metal collar around her neck, with a long chain that rests on the floor and eventually sinks under a metal plate that is locked with a keyhole.

I see, since she's counted as a monster, she's been 'stored' in the stables. There's a water bowl and one with food, but they look mostly untouched.

Honestly, she looks just plain depressed. I wonder if the former minister was actually nice to her?

Hmm I wonder how did he managed to talk with her if she wasn't his [Menagerie] pet.

Some of this is pretty amazing. Some of it looks like trash, though.

To begin with, she's a succubuss, right? But her race says Camille. She has succubuss racial skills, so maybe she's just an evolved version?

Her HP is shit, though. There's no two ways about it. It's really shit.

If you are an evolved, and apparently ranked up, version of a sucubuss, why is your HP in the 2-digit range?

I know that succubuss are on the delicate end of the spectrum, but I'm pretty sure that as 'melee' monsters, they're still meant to take some hits! (no pun intended)

Your Soul Eater passive looks awesome, but can you use it? Seriously, can you actually survive getting close enough to a target that you can use it!?

I can understand your STR and CON being low since you are a caster, but as a melee caster, isn't that too much?

Uhmm... that looks quite amazing, but it means she can't for example [Craft] a sword, or a mirror, or anything that has more than a single part or material on it. The [Crafter] job lets you take raw materials and turn them into finished products, as long as you know how to make the product to begin with.

Its much better in some ways, and much worse in others... should I blame the succubus primitive state on this skill? They could make a smooth one piece of iron (such as for a club) if they wanted to, but they couldn't make something as simple as a dress.

And with such a skill, would they be interested in the extra work needed for such a thing?

Ah, but it probably means we could have just shown them a finished high quality test tube and have them make a couple hundred out of it with their racial craft skill, though.

Eh... I guess its neither better or worse. Its just different.

But it doesn't really give me any motivation for trusting her, I think...

Ah btw I just thought maybe I wasnt clear enough, but the succubus craft skill basically could make a bar of iron or a club, but couldn't make a gun.

It could make the individual parts of a gun, though, but it would require manual assembly afterwards.

They can make an iron cluib, but they can't make a piece of cloth because that involves weaving the fibers into thread and thr threads into cloth. They could grab a tree and make a block of pulp, but not a sheet of paper.

They can make a glass bottle, but not a pair of glasses because that involved crystals, frame, nosepads, arms, and probably springs or joints, and such.

They could make a spear as long as its all a single solid pece, but that's basically just a pointy stick.
