/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back, everyone, to the eighty-seventh installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest. As always I'm Wong, your host, and today you are once again Admiral Roarke Susan Starwind of the Iron Kestrels Space Pirate fleet. Also tourney pilots, later on. You know the drill!

Last time, you sorted shit out and solved the problems caused by SOUL's stunt, acquiring new technology in the process. You also oversaw Round Three of the tournament, and with Rosita in such a good mood...it's time to take her to dinner, to see her sister.

Oh boy! This is gonna be a beautiful train wreck.

The hardest decision was choosing whether or not to tell Rosita she'd be meeting her sister at dinner.

Not because you wanted to surprise her, but for a more prosaic reason. Strategy. According to Samantha's analysis and what you saw of her, Irina Gaunt is a very intelligent but extremely cagey woman, prone to paranoia and bitterness. If she felt like you, Amos, and Rosita conspired to get her there, you think it might backfire tremendously, and as a wedding gift for your China Girl you're not prepared to let that happen. In the end, you decided not to tell her. Easier on Irina that way, and to Rosita you can always play it off as a romantic surprise. It's the kind of thinking that reminds you uncomfortably of working out the details for a heist.

Choosing a restaurant is made more difficult by having to coordinate with Major Amos Wedge. A few conversations over PC has you convinced his idea of haute cuisine is a burger with fancy toppings, and you strongly suggest to him he pretends that one of his friends recommended the place you end up picking to avoid raising suspicion. Loriette is surprisingly helpful, oddly enough she seems to quite like Rosita and has the opposite of Amos' problem, she's a picky eater who's accustomed to private chefs and restaurants that require a waiting list. She's also completely horrified by Karen's diet, which for some reason amuses you greatly.

Loriette's choice is a bit avant-garde by your more traditional standards, but Major Wedge seems thrilled with the selection, and thankfully he doesn't have to know that an Avalonian was involved in choosing it. According to him, Irina's other area of specialization is as a botanist, so The Grounds is the ideal place to take her out to dinner. The Grounds is, essentially, a hedged enclosure like the maze you saw at General Fairchild's estate. Not one complicated enough to get lost in, its layout is very simple, but it's completely open to the sky. All cooking and dining is done outdoors, aside from a few surreptitious storage buildings with tactfully-placed giant umbrellas that extend over the entire complex during scheduled artificial rain cycles.

It's an idea that would never work on a planet, but colony life makes it possible. Its layout of high, verdant walls...built around bulletproof slabs of metal hidden beneath the vines...provides protection against snipers, and like many of the premiere spots on Auditorium it overlooks the lake, at least for its more expensive tables. Which, of course, you can afford. You understand why Auditorium's residents show off their lake so much, and to be honest, you like it too. Something about the sound of the waves is comforting, even for a colony-born, colony-raised Space Pirate. As always, it makes you wonder what Earth, the homeland so many of these colonies do their best to imitate, was really, truly like.

Your plan calls for precise timing, too. Irina is a flight risk, Rosita is not, so by necessity you instruct Amos to arrive first. It requires a bit of manipulation, and the cooperation of the restaurant's owner, to seat a party of two at a four-seat lakeside table where she won't immediately see you coming and have time to escape, but you manage, as usual.

The day couldn't be more perfect for it. Not too hot, but still warm, with a cool breeze off the lake. Someone is playing a violin in another closed-off 'room' formed by the hedges. Rosita is as happy as a kitten after the drama of the third round, chattering animatedly with you about the mecha involved in the tourney and her bets. She doesn't know the technology behind mecha in the way you do, but she's attentive and enthusiastic and having a wonderful time with speculation now that her obvious favorite has been eliminated. Surprisingly she isn't holding a grudge about that, simply stating that it was a good fight.

Amos and Irina have the traditional glasses of ice water every fancy restaurant brings to customers first, in your experience, and must be waiting on their actual drinks to arrive. The blonde who invaded your mechbay spots Rosita a second in advance, her eyes widening. She starts to push her chair back, as if to run, hesitates as if thinking better of it, and hunches her head down and whispers fiercely to Amos, probably trying to avoid attention. It doesn't work.

“Irina?” It's a little shocking, hearing the brash, unassailably confident Red Siren sound shy. You've heard that tone once or twice before, but the two of you have been very close for a very, very long time.

“I was last time I checked, I'm surprised you remember with your fancy colony and fancy pirate crew and that...that borderline ostentatious mech you have.” Irina grumbles.

Red Siren smiles sadly, “You...you didn't think it was ostentatious back when it was the Eilonwy. I remember you said it was beautiful when I first showed you. Even back then, before you grew up, you were so confident analyzing it and telling me how it worked even though you only had holos to work off of.”

Irina's hands tighten into fists, “That was a long time ago. It was a different mech back then. We were different girls back then. My big sister was taking center stage, as always, it was fitting that you'd have a mech you could show off with. Even if I was jealous, I still wanted to be happy for you.”

Rosita frowns, “You were jealous? But...Irina...”

Irina slams her hands down on the table, lurching to her feet, “But what!? You were always admired by everyone! Mother always put you first! No matter what you did, everyone would laugh and forgive you, like you were so damned special! I had to struggle for everything! Everything! Think of all the lives you ruined! A good man, a man who was offering to mentor me when I finished school, died because of you, along with his wife! All because you had to have whatever you wanted and nobody ever told you no! Did you ever think, even once, about how hard it made things for me trying to start a career in Bahamutcorp after what you did!? Nobody trusted me! Nobody was willing to give me a chance! I had to bow and scrape and take whatever unheralded work I could to prove myself to the company, sacrifice the credit I should have gotten so senior technicians would look upon me with just a little kindness and not simply consign me to the shadows as the sister of the woman who killed Doctor Asphodel! Didn't you ever think about your own family!?”

Rosita's lower lip quivers, “I...I sent money back until mom told me it wasn't wanted anymore...when she said it was a...an embarrassment...”

>I had to bow and scrape and take whatever unheralded work I could to prove myself to the company, sacrifice the credit I should have gotten so senior technicians would look upon me with just a little kindness and not simply consign me to the shadows as the sister of the woman who killed Doctor Asphodel!!
WELP! That explains some things during Vietnyan when captain Asphodel tried to make Wedge not trust Irina. That was probably his brother.
>>
“It wasn't her!” Irina shouts, then glances around in a panic and lowers her voice, “Mister Gaunt...dad, I mean...and I wrote that message! Mom drank every penny you sent her, and it was ruining her second marriage! Getting you out of the way, cutting off the umbilical she used to leech off your money and fame, was the best thing that ever happened to any of us! We didn't need charity!” Her shoulders tremble, “Dad may not be my birth father, but he did more for us than you ever did, he used his connections to introduce me to the technicians involved in the SOUL project, to get them to at least take a look at my designs. Do you understand the kind of enemies I had, because of you? I wasn't even allowed to build SOUL mecha at first, I was relegated to designing improvements to the Pumpkinseed...and you know what?” She thrusts her chest forward, hands on her hips and eyes flashing, “I put my heart into it and did a damned good job! I even got Gretchen Colburn interested in reviewing the new models after she criticized the originals...but do you know what happens next?” She leans forward, her eyes narrowing.

"Irina, please, we haven't even gotten to eat yet." Amos looks guiltily at you, seeming as surprised by the rage-filled blonde explosion as you are.

"Not until I've had my say! I thought I'd be able to stand looking at her, but I just can't!“ Irina hisses, "On their maiden voyage, who else shows up but YOU? Swanning in without a care as always, showing off your new man, breaking my hard work all for the chance to show off and hog the spotlight! I didn't come here to let you feel like you had closure! I didn't come here for your damned ego! I came here to tell you exactly what I thought of you!” Irina's voice chokes a little, but she grabs the glass of ice water and takes a deep swallow, a stray rivulet of the liquid dripping down her cheek. She slams it back down, “This is my revenge! And to think, I almost thought better of it, that I could hide from you and let you think you still...think you still deserved to be...be my big sister. Well, you know what? That's fine, because Amos was right. I'm a success now, and I earned every scrap of it. I'm building the flagship SOUL mecha, I have a great boyfriend who I'm going to marry soon, I have more authority in the company than almost everyone who tried to stand in my way, I get assigned secret projects, and I can do it all without hiding from the law so...so...so take THAT!” Her triumphant smile gleams brightly, then wavers and vanishes, turning into a scowl, “Stop that. I...I mean it, stop it, Rosita! Crying only works on mom, it has no effect on me!”

Rosita's impressive bosom heaves in a sob, and she covers her face with her hands.

Irina's scowl deepens, “I said stop! I'm not going to feel sorry for you just because you burst into tears!”

“I-Isn't this what you wanted!? You win, Irina, just like always, you win! I don't care anymore!” Rosita bawls, tears pouring down her cheeks, “It's all wrong, it's completely wrong!”

Irina blinks, “It is?"

“W-w-what do you mean!?” Rosita stomps her foot, “When we were kids, all I ever heard was people talking about how smart you were! How you had a future! How I needed help and you didn't! I had to wear low-cut dresses and sing at bars to make a living, you were the one who could be more than an entertainer! Dad...our real dad...left because of me! Mom drank because of me! The only person who seemed to really care about me had his life ruined and died because of me! Not like you, everybody's happy when you're around...I hate you!”

“I hate you more!” Irina snaps.

“I hate you the most! I've always been jealous of you, and you never even cared! When I showed you the Eilonwy, you weren't supposed to think it was cool, you were supposed to be mad that you weren't good at piloting...but it didn't even matter to you!” Rosita snaps back. “And n-now...even my scheme to bring you here and show you how I'm doing well for myself is backfiring! You're some sort of hero and I'm just...just a singer! And a thief! I'm the best at both, but still, it's not like I've won a war or anything!”

“A battle, not the war, and you can't be serious, everyone's always been jealous of how talented you are! What kind of idiot wouldn't be!?” Irina wails.

You, the waiter standing unobtrusively nearby looking as if he wished he was anywhere else right now, and Amos trade awkward, uncomfortable looks. Amos picks up a menu, leafs through it, nods his head with a growing look of discomfort, and whispers to you, “...I don't know what most of these are.”

“Stupid pink princess!”

“Smug little glasses nerd!”

“I'm taller than you now, who's little!?”

“Too bad your figure didn't grow as much, you damned beanpole!”

“Amos is cuter than Roarke!”

“No way in Tartarus! Roarke is much cuter than Amos!”

“We used your Archen for target practice in the simms when testing the Delphinius and it went down in flames! Ha ha HA!”

“Ooh you bitch! That's only because you'd make a MISERABLE commander!”

“I'll order, it's fine, I know what mine likes. Yours isn't a vegetarian, right?” You jerk your head surreptitiously towards the two arguing women while trying to avoid their line of fire.

Amos shakes his head, “By Jove, no.”

“Steak, then. Everybody likes steak.” You decide.

“Medium rare!”

“Medium rare! Amos' will be medium rare too!”

“What, can't your farmboy order for himself!? How much older than him are you, anyway? Is he even over twenty!?”

“Can't yours get a haircut!? Look at that mop!”

“Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!” You interject, “Leave the mane out of this.” You look at the waiter, point at a bottle of wine you're familiar with, and give him an escape, “This and four medium rare steaks.”

The waiter nods, looking extremely grateful for the chance to scurry off before the two women start biting people.

“I can't believe it! You came to my wedding just to try and make me jealous of you!?”

“You invited me to your wedding just to try and make ME jealous of YOU!”

Both of them hesitate, then ask simultaneously, “Did it work?”

Irina sighs, “You're definitely living like a princess, I guess it is sort of enviable.”

“And your fame might be a lot more...well...clean than mine.” Rosita admits.

“I still wouldn't trade.” Irina juts her chin out stubbornly.

“Neither would I!” Rosita harrumphs. Then she crosses her arms and does her best to look mature and regal.

Irina sighs, “Even with all that, I still...”

“I love you, little sis.” Rosita pats her head.

Irina scowls, “I was going to say it first!”

Rosita smiles smugly, “I know.”

Irina grumbles indignantly, “I'm shocked, really, I never knew you were jealous of me when we were kids.”

“How do you think I feel!?” Rosita protests, “I never knew you were jealous of me, either!”

"Hmph." Irina glowers.

“I'm still in shock that you're this tall, you were always a little ball of blonde hair and glasses before.” Rosita smiles cheekily.

“And you were always a flirt, so you and Starwind deserve each other. Hmph. You'd better come to my wedding too or I swear, I'll find a way to sicc SOUL on your colony.” Irina pouts.

Rosita pouts too, “I'll steal every last one of their mecha!”

“I'll drown you in Pumpkinseed IIs if that's what it takes! Don't forget, I have the resources of an entire planet behind me!” Irina jabs a finger at Rosita like a beamsaber.

The two of them spend the entire meal ribbing each other. The steak is delicious, and the music is sublime. You're not sure who, but someone is playing the violin somewhere nearby, and doing a fantastic job. In fact, by the time dessert has been eaten and you're parting ways again, you're in a wonderful mood.

It's been a great day, and from the way Red Siren is talking about wanting something sweet despite already having eaten a generous piece of cheesecake, you suspect it's about to be a great night too as you make your way out of the restaurant and towards her castle.

Which is when you spot Maxwell Hammer, and for once, he looks worried, checking his PC's chronometer and pacing nervously in front of an upscale bar. He salutes when he sees you, and you return the gesture, “Hammer, what's wrong?”

He smiles sadly, “I'm afraid my evening isn't going as well as yours, sir. I had a date too, but it looks like I got stood up.” He shakes his head, “I knew she was much too cool for a roughneck like me.”

“Don't be so over-modest, Max. You're charming!” Red Siren scolds, frowning, “Who is she? That poor girl doesn't know what she's missing.”

His bluff face turns a little red, “Mako. Sergeant Nunez. My, uh, my last opponent in the tournament. We were supposed to meet up for drinks, but she's running late. I suppose it's been a while since I did something like this, and I'm a little nervous. She's only fifteen minutes behind, I suppose that's not so bad.” His PC bwoops, and he snatches it up, then frowns, “The hell is she just sending a coordinate beacon to me for?”

You glance at Red Siren, “I'm curious too.”

She shrugs, “Let's call it a detour, I need some exercise after that meal. Call it a warmup for what I'll do to you when we get home.” She winks, booping your nose. The three of you set off, in the direction of the UJCIDF berth.

...You know as soon as the coordinate locator leads you into an alley that something is wrong, and so does Red Siren. She talks into her PC, and as you enter the alley you already see a few of her CDF in their vibrant red uniforms approaching. As if that wasn't enough, your stomach turns as you detect a familiar, thick, coppery scent.

Blood.

Sergeant Nunez is visible, standing at the end of the alleyway...or, at least, that's what you think at first. As you get closer, you realize she's leaning against the wall, feet barely touching the ground. One arm is pinned to the wall by something narrow and sharp that's been lodged into the mortar between the bricks, and as you take in her position the true horror of what must have happened hits you.

She's been crucified. Or at least, she had been. Whatever that is in her palm, one was driven into each hand, and three more driven into her torso. She must have managed to rip one hand free, though, it's gripping her PC, keeping pressure on her wounds as best she can.

“Call a medic.” Red Siren instructs promptly, “She's still breathing, but...” A glance confirms she's barely conscious and has lost a lot of blood. Your foot disturbs a slender, blood-slicked, sharp-tipped rod, the one that must have been nailed through her hand before she freed herself from it, and you bend down to take a better look using the flashlight function of your PC. It's a kebab skewer. There are several street stands at this festival using just this kind, plain wood, cheap and disposable. The assassin didn't even need to have a weapon on their person, and the stands likely served crowds of people today, it's unlikely the vendors would even remember the assassin. The whole crime speaks of casual, in-the-moment cruelty, a desire to inflict pain. She wouldn't have died quickly, like this, but if she hadn't gotten to her PC there's no question she would have bled out from the sticky streams of red on her clothes. Whoever stabbed her looks to have pulled the spikes out of her torso and stabbed them back in a few times, just for the hell of it, there are more puncture wounds than skewers.

There's something familiar about this. The deliberate cruelty, giving someone a slow but certain death. The person and the circumstances are different, but somehow...it reminds you of the death of Captain Ozark. That's just a feeling, though, and feelings aren't the same as facts.

You hear a commotion, and turn your head to see roughly a dozen UJCIDF infantry swarming the alley. One of them, about your age with a dashing smile and wavy brown hair, wearing a Colonel's uniform, claps you on the shoulder, “We'll take it from here.” He instructs.

You straighten up from examining the skewer on the cobblestones, looming over him, “No, you won't.”

“Colonel Luxol, stand down.” General Regina Hatsheput looks harried, and her uniform is rumpled, you can get just a glimpse of a swimsuit beneath the poorly-done buttons. She gives you a strained smile, “She sent a coordinate pin to us. I assure you, she'll be safe in the care of our doctors. She's one of ours.”

You remember some gossip you overheard regarding Wyatt, and what Karen told you her eavesdropping had picked up, “So was her attacker, I think.”

“We have evidence to that account, too.” Regina replies firmly.

Red Siren leans in, and with a frown, sniffs the Sergeant's face as the medics and an attentive Maxwell get her down from the wall, “She reeks of chemicals. Someone must have used a pad dipped in something, then stabbed her while she was reeling.”

“And here you let your sister call herself the smart one.” You joke, and Rosita gives you a wan smile.

“Rest assured, Admiral, the UJCIDF takes the corruption of its guiding principles extremely seriously and is building a case against the likely perpetrator. I would prefer we take care of her ourselves, but...if you decided to have your people look after her, that might be for the best. Certain of her superior officers couldn't attempt to pull chain-of-command to get access to her that way.” General Hatsheput's tone is extremely neutral, “This is an atrocity...”

“It's not the first.” You can't keep the anger out of your voice, “But it might just be the last. I'm about to commit an atrocity of my own.”

Regina's voice acquires a note of panic despite its unusual professionalism, “Admiral Starwind, we can't just let you start snapping necks!”

“Take the Sergeant to the colonial palace once you've administered first aid.” It's closer than the Rhinehawk and Red Siren has her own doctors, “Sorry, General. Maybe Cassius could have stopped me, but I think the galaxy has had just about enough of Hermione Fairchild.”

Even if Sergeant Nunez is someone you barely know, you're tired of things like this, and you're tired of the people who do them. You have the power to make them stop existing, and it's about time you used it.

Pull a Candie Murder. Insist upon shaking hands with Bethany and then killing her on the spot. Portray evidence that she attacked a guest on the Auditorium and we take Hospitium very seriously.

I think the most dramatic way would be to take her on in the same manner that she took on our brother, but where he failed and died, we'd succeed. Lots of dramatic irony to be mined there. The fight should be brutal, with her giving and taking blows until the end. Maybe Rourke can finish her off with his own hands, but he should be the last thing she sees before dying. Anything else is too impersonal for our revenge. Fairchild can have the ridiculous over the top death.

>>1571717

That isn't how it works.

>>1571715

This is actually not an unworkable suggestion. Obviously you can't just ask them to hand her over in cuffs, but since dueling is an established Jovian tradition and it's known among the upper brass that she killed Cassius, you'd have grounds to make that challenge part of your terms. I'm not saying it's the BEST plan, but it WORKS. Possibly.

Right then, in terms of evidence, we likely have a bevy of things. Off the top of my head we have;
The Data Karen has.
Our own favorite Aussie on the colony right now.
Records and data on the Colony. Even if it's not precise, knowing where she was and when the attack took place narrows it down.
Even then, she likely left something on those kebabs. A bit of skin, some hair, that strand oh dna from that hair of hers. If she enjoys it, she is likely not smart enough to actually CLEAN HER MESS.
Likewise, with the help of the Navy we could likely correlate her missing with other events as well. We have witnesses and people who WERE at some of those events after all.

As for pinning her, one thing we should do is get the First Mate thing stick. We do that, we can try her as a pirate of the belt and under our jurisdiction. That means she becomes a political issue and a real problem.
For that stupid trick of hers, Karen likely has enough data on our bit system and the smashed cockpits to figure something out. Even if it's a trace or a jammer, either one would remove that advantage of hers.
>>
>>1571727

> Does she think she can stop us? I say we let her know that one way or another, the assassin isn't leaving alive.

Sorry, I should have meant that I was implying that either they could help us and have us ally with them, or they could have us kill her publicly and loudly and then see what kind of response we got from their "allies", including the colonies outside the system, and Avalon.
>>
>>1571738
I mean she is committing crimes on our turf, its in our right to be able to charge her for it.
>>
>>1571734
Hell, the fact those are kabab skewers likely means there is saliva on them or some sort of scrap residue left over.
>>
>>1571751
And further information that we can use to coorelate is the transport the Slayer rode in on. It was under Fairchild's neice's name, but the close connection could mean borrowing it from her or stealing it under an assumption.
Point is, we first need to get her to stick around for a crime she has done recently. Then we proceed with the other crimes we have proof of. Even if it will take a while for evidence to fully be there, thats more than enough time to simply snap her neck and say she tried to escape/assault us.
Of course, the key point of all this is; how Far will Fairchild go? She will likely try to force or change the arrangement, but if she got the command from above her, then it becomes a case of obey or treason. Choose between her fuck buddy or her career. If we keep the auction live for the Navy ships, that can hurt her further, maybe force her to do this from a position where joining her means treason as well instead of doing their duty.
>>
If we convince Mako to join our crew, which shouldn't be too hard, we'll have the perfect reason to prosecute her since she attacked one of our own.
>>
>>1571803
She also sent a signal to one of our own, likely requesting aid. Therefor, she petitioned for our aid as well.
>>
I think you guys are overthinking this a little. We need to get Beth into a position where we can kill her, and there are quicker and easier ways to do that without invoking legal challenges
>>
>>1571815
We'll kill her the way she killed our brother.
>>
>>1571815
Murdeing a Jovian officer will cause a lot of problems, making it all official like gives us the ability to execute her with much less blow back.

>>1571821
Poisons too cowardly for Roarke.
>>
>>1571815
Such as? Fairchild's existence makes it hard to do so without causing a war with the SSL. Any way we deal with her has to also make it so Fairchild can't do shit either, unless she wants to go criminal.
>>1571821
She killed our brother with a poisoned knife. I say we crush her with the Kaiser. Give her some flashbacks of that first thrashing.
>>
>>1571824
>>157182
>>1571824
Im still thinking though the details, but the general thought is baiting her into attacking first. We just have to push the right buttons to set up the encounter without Fairchild to babysit her.
>>
>>1571843
A valid idea, but not worth it. We can likely piss her off, yes, but Fairchild is likely going to spin it so Han Shot first. Even with our skill, she is still an assassin. giving her the initiative is a bad idea.
While we likely can't fully disarm them, we should weaken them in as many ways as possible. Remove their advantages, remove their power, strip them of the initiative and any sort of 'if I go down, you go down too!' shit.
>>
>>1571843
Too much chance someone will see us egging her on to swing first. We should make it clear though as pirate customs dictate the CO has to be their for a subordinate's execution so Fairy can get front row seats to us killing Bethany.

Nicely done! Sidenote, the Special Event is unlike anything we've done in this quest so far, and I have no idea how long it will take. It might be a long session, it might be a very short session. Any poor balance and shenanigans can be blamed squarely on Red Siren coming up with it.

Not going to lie, this is not a combination I saw coming into the final 3. Tried looking at previous threads and find ways to get evidence or a mean to pin her. The navy could help along with Mars considering the Rashad situation.
>>
>>1571927

Oh, yes, that is actually very useful. Keep in mind, though, if all you do is present your evidence that she's up to shady shit without doing something else (like Thunderbird's suggestion of making a duel with Cabot our condition for joining the SSL) and it bears fruit, the military will just punish her on their own and you won't get to snap necks.
>>
>>1571929
Oh I know, the point is to correlate Cabot not as a member of the SSL, but as the first mate of Green Skulls. The circlet used on Fatima, the knowledge of where the Soul Lab was, all those could have been leaked to Cabot through Fairchild in exchange for various things.
If we get that stuck, we could request that as a Belt Pirate, she must follow our laws. Summary neck snapping, mech fight, all those sort of things become an option. After all, we ARE making a nation, and she is a wanted criminal from a allied nation who want to deal with her by their laws.

>>
>>1571947
We should also push Hatesheput into providing us with all the information they've collected against Fairchild so that we can see if there's anything we can help them fill in.

Cabot has to die, but we need to remember she's just a tool.
>>
>tfw Roarke finally gets his hands on Cabot and instagibs her with his bare hand

How terrified would everyone be seeing someone literally punch through somebody?
>>
>>1572074
Aye. There are a lot of things to match up. The death of that one General and any possible connection to it there is opens up a lot of fronts. Even if we never get a word out of Cabot due to her getting a bad case of the explosions, her ties with Fairchild will likely be enough to get questions asked of her.
In either case, I expect them to run. Hells, I want them to run to a degree. Keep an eye on their ship and machines, have them try to escape only to find they can't warp or the ship crew refuses them. Bring out the remote Slayers so we can jam them and take them as loot. Bring out that super fancy mech Fairchild has so we can take that too. Seize the assets of Cabot just for some extra kicking where it hurts.
>>
>>1572281

>>1572306
Well, we have an eye witness to the general's assassination, we just need him to make a description of the mech she was using. After that, everything should fall into place.
>>
>>1571732
That's not a terrible idea, actually. Except I'd make it "hasn't regained consciousness yet, not expected to do so for a couple days, hopefully she can tell us what happened at that point". Put Cabot on a time crunch, make sure that it's well known that someone tried to off the UJCIDF pilot, and make it so that everyone wants to know who. And oh, whoops, lookit that, somehow the hospital she's at got leaked, how'd that happen?
>>
>>1573138
If we go with that plan we should probably not leak the hospital location, knowing Bethany she'll smell its a trap miles away. Just announcing that Mako was attacked and is presumed to gain consciousness in a few days should be enough to bait the hook.
>>
>>1573143
>>1573138
I'd rather not use her as Bait. This seems like the sort of thing she would have done before. In any scenario, I want to face her outside her element. No surprises or dirty tricks.
>>
>>1573151
Then go for my idea of making a duel with Cabot a condition for joining the SSL.
>>
>>1573181
Seems like the best way of doing things. Killing multiple birds with one stone, and would set us up for a pretty badass fight.
>>
>>1573151
Well, obviously we don't ACTUALLY put her where all the records say she is.
>>
>>1573201
>Cabot comes into the hospital room to finish off Mako
>Goes over to the bed and lifts up the covers
>Its Roarke
>>
>>1572306
Did someone say...EXPLOSIONS?
>>1573208
This would be hilarious.
>>
>>1573181
Oh I agree with getting Cabot as a condition since she is a belt pirate and wanted one by many of our fleet, but the duel is still iffy to me. I don't want to give her a chance. Not even a little one. She will likely run, and I wouldn't be surprised if when she does take the duel, either Fairchild or herself tries something dirty.
So, why not prepare for that? If she goes for her mecha and ship, we have everything set up.If she tries to flee, we funnel her to an area where we can deal with her. No escape, no allies, and no chance.
>>
>>1573265
I'm sure we could get the Jovians to impound her mech to make sure she can't escape. And as far as her being tricky, their isn't much we can do to stop that.
>>
>>1573274
Sure there is, it's understanding her tricks and how to deal with them. Take the Slayer. We know how it works and we know how to counter stealth(support paint bombing or using chaff to get a look at her position. If she controls it remotely, we find the signal or jam it. Melee? Power armor and making sure she is unarmed before the auction for 'safety'. Fairchild? As I have written above. Invading ships she likely has hidden could be fired upon by everyone. Her ego is another weakness of hers. She freaked out quite easily, so we use that as well. Bombs just require Karen and our security being top of their game. Any reinforcements can likely be taken out by our own hidden in the wings.
>>
>>1573302
I'll point out that Fairchild has never freaked out easily. She's a consume politician who is exceptionally good at responding on the spot.

Look at all the times she's smiled and used us to boost her image. Taken or best shot about her relationship with our Mom.

Immediately flipped on Rashad pretty much as we were in the process of wrecking arguably her most important scheme of all, without any time to prepare or think about it.

She's Space Nixon. Her problem is she's a bloodthirsty and vengeful monster that can never let people walk away, not that she can't control her emotions.

The only way we'll get her is with unarguably real evidence.
>>

>>
>>1573352

>>
So what else should we make conditions for us joining the SSL? So far I think we've talked about
>Duel with Bethany
>Freedom to raid anywhere outside the system
>>
>>1573385
Fairchild has no say in what our people do if there is a joint operation. No pushing us back or trying to steal the glory.
Spoils we get are ours first. No exceptions. That means PoW, loot, mech, and research.
Corps who are not Belt Born are going to be taxed.
We decide what to send and how we send it.
Piracy will still happen if they go through the belt. Either through taxes or protection.
>>
>>1573406
>We decide what to send and how we send it.
>Piracy will still happen if they go through the belt. Either through taxes or protection.
These two are probably the hardest sell and would be the most likely to be flat out refused. The rest should be fine though.

“What the fuck is going on here, do you guys know?” James McClintock's voice echoes over the comms as the three mecha rise up onto the new arena. The rotation of the upper surface holding the habitation pods over the arena terrain itself on the colony hull below has been altered, and now...now they're someplace completely unfamiliar. Ahead of them stretches a sort of metal corridor, about a hundred and fifty meters wide, on both sides. Stranger still, their mecha are side-by-side, standing with a sort of raised dais behind them.

The Jager shakes its head.

The Dutchman just looks at the Lightning in silence. Maxwell is worried, brooding, and distraught. He's thought a lot about dropping out of the event, but...the kids are watching. They're counting on him, and as much as he may not personally feel like fighting, he's doing it for them.

“WELCOME, CONTESTANTS, TO THE SPECIAL EVENT FROM HELL!” Red Siren booms over the loudspeakers. Bizarrely, she's by herself, the Knuckle Kaiser's throne is empty. “All three of you have done very well to come this far, and regardless of the results, none of you will drop out regardless of your performance in this stage unless you somehow kill another contestant. The winner, however, skips the semi-finals and goes straight to the final match. As a result, I didn't feel obligated to be fair at all when designing this challenge! Which I did by myself! Struggle your utmost!” The Archen lounges across the arms of the two thrones, waving to the crowd. “So far, these have been straightforward fights, but there's more to real battle than just fighting one-on-one duels! This is a test of your ability to escape! Before you lies our obstacle course, a perilous and winding path!” She transmits a map to each of the contestants, “As you can see, the star at the end is your objective, hurry and reach it if you want to win! Oh, but of course, there are additional possible win conditions. For example, you can defeat both of your competitors or...”

There is no THUD, behind them. The ground does not shake. However, it feels as if it should. The featureless white mask of the Knuckle Kaiser gazes down from its mass of black metal, crimson fingers digging into the edge of the dais as it squats there like an enormous ape. Teams of pink-and-red Harpies strap huge counterweights to its shields, forearms and knees, removing the four fist drones floating behind it. The weights also restrain its harpoon, and once it has tested that the Knuckle Kaiser gives the Archen a thumbs-up.

“...Or disable our gallant pacesetter. In case you're tempted to just sit back and shoot your friends in the back, my darling Roarke will be advancing at a speed slightly above half his usual...oh, don't ask me to be exact...any mech he manages to catch up to, he'll mercilessly crush!” The Archen finger-waves to the Knuckle Kaiser.

>>1573419
I hope that her death isn't a surprise to her. Bethany should have to experience the powerlessness she put others through before the end. She should have to see it coming, and be able to do nothing about it. Like maybe she goes to finish off Rourke with her knife, mocking him all the while, but Roarke catches her hand and throws her to the ground. Roarke rolls on top of her, and forces her hand down. Despite all her efforts, she can't do anything but watch wide eyed as Roarke slowly but steadily powers her own (poisoned) blade into her.

“...Nobody's even commented on my gun.” McClintock grumbles, cradling a huge beam cannon in his mech's arms in lieu of the usual sword. “It's a tribute to Al and all that.”

Maxwell and Skunk both grunt in acknowledgement.

“Oh, two more things. First, a minute of silence for one of our contestants, Sergeant Mako Nunez, pilot of the Pumpkinseed II Custom.” Red Siren's voice has a layer of something hard, cold, and fierce in it, “She was attacked by some vicious, cowardly soul after her last match and is currently receiving medical treatment. Hopefully she will be well enough to tell us who assaulted her by tomorrow, when she's expected to wake up. To whoever did this, when we find you, your life is forfeit. No matter who you are or who you work for, there's no immunity to the rules on my colony. You will die messily.”

The minute of silence is, indeed, silent. The Dutchman's hands clench into fists.

“Thank you, everyone.” Red Siren announces at last, “Secondly, as a bonus, the Pumpkinseed Jager receives a ten-second head start for passing the last round without taking any damage. Superbly done. Start your engines, gentlemen! It's about to get perilous! Comm signals will tell you when to go!”

The Jager's flashes, and it roars off, and ten seconds later the other two speed after it.

For my next action this turn, two more attacks on his left leg.

>>1573832
Normal since the Glaive's Quick.

Rolled 5 + 11 (1d10 + 11)

>>1573839
You should be running Blitz.
>>
The Jager's glaive is Quick, whether or not the second attack was a slam or not it has at least one more attack, and THEN it won initiative, so Blitzanon...whatcha gonna do?
>>
>>1573845
Are you just going to reply to every post you missed?
>>
>>1573848
Sure, sure. You totally wouldn't slam me into oblivion when you catch up.
>>
Rolled 6 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

>>1573844
And 1 more luck here.
>>1573853
The funny thing is? I wouldn't. I wanted to test myself against the obstacle course. Now though, now you have my attention.
>>
>>1573859
Well that's one turn. Thanks dice gods.

Gonna wait for Wong to say he's caught up before going again.
>>
>>1573544
Based Macho Man. Died stopping the apocalypse with a flying elbow drop.
>>
>>1573864
No, it's not. You said normal attack. Two glaive strikes. Quick attacks do not count for slams. You damaged my leg, but thats it. 2 kills of damage. I recommend you start running now.
>>
>>1573879
Yeah, I know. I would have said I was slamming you if I was.
>>
>>1573859

-1 left leg SP, -2 Kills. 4 SP, 3K left.

>>1573879

He made four glaive attacks and a free move with his surprise round. It's now into regular initiative, where he's going first.

Blitz, what do you want to do? I highly suggest leaving the Roarke Rumpus Radius.
>>
Rolled 2 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>1573896
Unfortunately, I think Dutch got ruffled.

Now to spring my /elaborate ruse/ because Dutch is the favored of the dice gods or some shit. Attacking his torso with the glaive.

Should've gone full dickbag from the start but nnnooooooo, surprise round'll just be a surprise. Why would I need to knock him out,
it's not like he'll roll an 8 and 10.
>>

You should have went fast Blitz.
>>
>>1573911
I would, but the Jager isn't. There's no way it'd ever win a race.
>>
Rolled 7 + 11 (1d10 + 11)

>>1573904
Because if I lose, chances are the Jaeger will be facing me next round.. and it has a much better chance against the lightning than me.
>>
That's one hit!

>torso

What? Did you mean the left leg again, Blitz, or are you really going for the torso?
>>
>>1573926
Didn't do the math 100%, put I'm pretty sure you'd get to the finish before him.

Waiting for Wong again.
>>
Rolled 6 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>1573941
Yep. Now that he wants to kill me and the dice god's didn't like me not going balls deep. I'm trying to go as deep as possible now.

2 more to the torso.
>>
Rolled 5 + 16 (1d10 + 16)

>>1573941
>>1573955
Last one. +3 luck on this.
>>
>>1573955

I'll be 100% honest and say I don't think this is a good strategy when you know that hit could have finished his leg, but okay.
>>
>>1573961
Doesn't matter since he has the booster. He'd be able to get on my flank with it in 1 action no matter where I moved.
>>
Rolled 6 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

>>1573955
The funny thing is you could have moved to the Lightning as well when you started your second turn. +1 luck.
>>1573965
But Blitz, why would I need to?
>>
Rolled 8 + 11 (1d10 + 11)

>>1573960
Because win or lose, you fall with me.
>>
>>1573971
Then I would have just scratched both of you instead of doing anything after sacrificing my head start.

Sorry, if it means anything. I would have done the same thing if the Lightning was closer.

>>1573977
Well, y'know, placement. Not my problem anyway, I'm just gonna keep my mouth shut next time since my luck is ass.
>>
>>1573961

So the Dutchman got hit in the left leg (-1 left leg SP, -2 Kills for 4 SP, 3K left), then the torso (-1 torso SP, -2 Kills for 4 SP, 6K left), then the torso again (-1 torso SP, -3 Kills for 3 SP, 3K left), then the torso again...

...and the Dutchman is down.

>>1574006

Let me just say that defeatism is silly, this is a long arena with many surprises that you probably won't see!

In this case, all that happens is 6K to the Jager's left arm. -1 SP, -1K, 4 SP and 5K remaining.

Of more concern, it's now Roarke's turn, and he can reach the Jager by walking forward, which means eight attacks incoming. The Knuckle Kaiser has no drones and is at -6 MV for this fight instead of its usual -4.
>>
Rolled 3 + 15 (1d10 + 15)

Two. Remember you get a dodge AND parry, no pentlaties.

The Knuckle Kaiser's fists are linked. That right there was the end. It makes four attack rolls, and each hit is worth TWO hits.

Seriously? In what are you working at?
I went back to that girl in the sunday before this last one just to tell her that I didn't wanted anything with her anymore (because I got the feeling that she was expecting things from me or something)... And she didn't take it so well and blocked me on everything after going "CURSE YOU AND YOUR PRETENTIOUS HONOR!" and "I DEEPLY DESPISE YOU!"... Kinda sad that this ended in such hate, but maybe it was better that way... But maybe I should have just keep quietly and waited for her to understand that I wasn't going back no more... But whatever, I felt that I needed to put an end to any "meh, he is going to come back eventually"-feeling that she had about me before it came back to haunt me in some way.

But well... At least now I have more time to focus in studying, and less one worry in my mind.

...I should stop having such deep attachment to other dramatic people though...

The Jager takes off...and circles directly behind the Dutchman, its glaive raised high. The glittering mass blade swings down in a graceful arc...and the Dutchman spins around, lifting its leg over the arc of the blow.

“No honor among pirates, right?” Maxwell comments, adrenaline helping to shake him from his funk a little.

Skunk makes a noncommittal, muffled sound over the comms.

The Jager goes into a blur of strikes while the Dutchman is off balance, shredding its armor and forcing Maxwell to eject, cutting through the torso before turning to face the Kaiser.

“One down, one challenging the pacesetter!” Red Siren calls out, then the Archen crosses its arms, “Hmph, and after my girls worked so hard setting up those floating mines, too!”

“Floating mines?” McClintock comments, slowing down his pace as he speeds ahead of the combatants. On a whim, he turns and fires at the Jager's back. His Lightning might be much faster, but why take chances? The huge magnum cannon fires a beam as thick as a mech's limb.

Red Siren sighs, “I suppose this is to be expected of a pirate tournament. I won't complain.”

The Black Ogre lumbers forward on the ground, advancing on foot. The Jager dodges and parries a few swipes, but then Roarke Starwind grabs its shoulder and hip and digs the Knuckle Kaiser's claws into the metal, ripping it in half. The cockpit ball pops free, and the pirate Admiral hoists the pieces overhead triumphantly.

“The Lightning wins by default!” Rosita declares, the Archen applauding, “James McClintock will advance automatically to the finals, while the Jager and Dutchman will get to settle this grudge in the semifinal match! Well done everyone, and don't worry, I'll find a use for those mines...and for Mister Rains and the poor Wraith, who may not have gotten to ambush anyone today, but surely will in the near future. No what I expected, but still very entertaining!”

>>
>>1574234

Between the Dutchman and the Jager, I mean.
Only the special event was planned for today, no?
>>
>>1574227
Hey Jager. Sorry this went how it did. I would've just ran if my luck hadn't been so bad on the surprise turn.
>>
>>1574233

He was right on 1517 with instructions to fire pest shots, stay as far away from actually engaging as possible (and beating him isn't a win condition anyway), and with every intention of getting behind the frontrunner and attacking them from behind. That bit of metaknowledge is why I didn't like the Jager's strategy, it feels like Blitz basically gave up and decided to kamikaze at least one other person.
>>
>>1574215
A certain type of person will bend over backwards to help people. Now, back in the day, where we had stories of saints and heroes that's awesome. Modern times are different. I will never say, don't be an altruist. But, altruists commonly put everyone before themselves and some people take advantage. You were. Take care of you. Then you can do shit. Also, to answer your question I am now working at a very busy lumber yard. Gotta make money and push myself.
>>
>>1574242

Yes, it's much too late for another fight right now especially with how tactical those two are. The Lightning, on the other hand, tends to fly straight for a target and kill it.
>>
>>1574248
A shame. Indeed. It sounded like fun to me, but that sort of thing happens. Guess I'll just pummel the Jager in not so honorable combat.
>>
>>1574254
Maximum bully Dutch. I put up hypothetical credits for you.
>>
>>1574246
Nah its cool, I did want to fight dutch anyway.
>>1574251

>>
>>1574251
>>1574257
Can't do much else with a WA+1, 11K Nodachi.
>>
>>1574248
Nah, the Jager's just slow, so even with the head start they would've caught up and either passed me or shot me in the back.

My original plan was to take off the Dutchman's leg during the surprise and then run on the first turn since his booster would've gotten him to the end first and doing that would make him use a lot more fuel than he would otherwise. But then I couldn't get his leg off and only having 1 movement on the first turn would have made me lose anyway, since he would still have 10 MV to my 9 and I would only have like 3 hexes ahead of him on his first move. So I figured I should just go all in.
>>
>>1574227

Honestly it was pretty funny to me.
>>
>>1574250
You think to highly of me Cali, I'm no such hero... My soft-heart only gets me in problems.

Good luck with your job anon, I'm happy that you got a chance to work with what you were prefering to go for... You know, my great grandfather was a carpenter for most of his life after escaping his noble family after his brothers start going for each other necks because of a inheritance dispute(long crazy story) and work with wood went down the line for some time... But I never had much way with it, somehow I always ended hurting myself when wood is involved... So since childhood I get I little paranoid when I cross paths with random wooden planks or something... It would be funny if I didn't have the feeling like the cosmos is joking with me sometimes.

Hmmm... But did you changed your mind about being a cop?
>>

>>
>>1574300
I dont exactly have much choice in the matter with my bad range but thats what you said.
>>
>>1574287
Never said you were a hero. Just that back in the day certain attributes were lauded over others. You can do great things for others as well as for yourself. Back in the day in Greece, excellence was a virtue. Charity could be, etc. But being a badass was also seen as divine.
>>
>>1574307
And in our modern situation telling off a toxic person, to take care of yourself, is a pretty big step. Especially if you put that energy to improving yourself.
>>
>>1574287
And I haven't changed my mind. I'm doing this job to save money so I can get where I need to go. It's just another step.
>>
>>1574307
That is deep.
>>1574317
She is probably going to leech off a rich dude and pretend that she doesn't feel my absence or something... But I still worry of what will come of that, she isn't really the type to be smart enough to pull off a long keikaku and end up on top, she is probably going to screw herself along the line... I feel really sad about it, but I learned that I can't really protect people from who they are.
>>1574332
Well, that is always how it goes, isn't it? One step each time, and one day we will hopefully get to the place we belong... Or at least discover our way along the path of life.
>>
>>1574351
The whole leeching off a dude is something I understand haha. It can definitely blow up in their face. Just...think, dealing with shit can feel monumental. It's not, you adapt and overcome. Anywho, gotta try and sleep more than 4 hours.

>>
>>1574578
than Roarke would've torn you apart
>>
>>1574583
If he is going slightly more than half his speed I probably would be able to keep ahead of him and take potshots at the same time. Especially with a head start.
>>
>>1574592
He has a point. One win condition is simply being the last one. Have everyone else deal with the obstacle. The faster ones won't waste time on him, and if they do, it helps him.
>>
>>1574595
Plus like blitz said the jager isnt built for speed so there was inevitably going to be some form of treachery going on.

I've already worked out how to turn this to my advantage. If JagerAnon and Dutch are going to be around tomorrow, and McClintock will be here Friday...I'm willing to run a few more days to finish up the tournament this week. Otherwise, it will be Tuesday. I'll watch for your answers tonight and tomorrow. I did see that some people have been worried that the tournament is making the game cater to a smaller group of people, and that IS a valid concern, I've seen it reflected in the voting in the archives too that it looks like fewer people are reading, so I don't mind picking up the pace a little so we can get back to the story.

Yep. Going to aim again.

“Aaaand now, for our semi-final match!” Red Siren announces after a break, during which poor, overworked Karen has some very choice words for everyone in the nearby vicinity as she hastily restores the two mecha to working condition. Thankfully, she had enough spare parts prefabricated to more or less build entirely new Jagers and Dutchmen if she had to.

Silver fireworks erupt from launchers all around the arena, which is the same as the Round Three one, just as she'd said. The arena has been re-synched to the colony's natural rotation cycle.

“It's a Kestrel-versus-Kestrel match! Iiiiiin this corner, the PUMPKINSEED JAGER, piloted by SKUNK!” Huge holoscreens on the walls display snippets from Skunk's earlier fights, including him tossing the Sagister around, “And in this corner, the DUTCHMAN! Piloted by Maxwell Haaaaammmmeeeer!” The Archen gestures from one to the other, “It's a grudge match between friends! If you had bets to make, I hope you already made them, because we're about to rumble!”

The Loggerhead, Myrmidon, and Wraith all take their place as trench guardians, the Wraith promptly vanishing.

As the monitor displays the Dutchman's victories, including him carving up Mako's Pumpkinseed II with his beam axe, Maxwell opens comms to Skunk. “I want you to know, I'm not angry.” The two take off at almost exactly the same time, but the lighter Dutchman is just a hair faster.

“Mmmph.” Skunk comments noncommittally, shrugging.

“What you did was a perfectly valid tactic even if it availed you nothing.”

“Mmm-hmm.” Skunk agrees.

“For that matter, even if I'm a little disappointed none of us, including the audience, got to see the obstacle course Red Siren worked on, that doesn't change anything. We're still friends.” Maxwell speaks solemnly, activating the beam saber his mech holds in one hand and whirling the heavy ball-and-chain it uses in the other around its head as it skips forward with long, flat jumps.

“Mmmmmm-hmmmm...?” Skunk makes a get-on-with-it gesture.

“I'm going to kick your ass for purely impersonal reasons. Maybe I've got a little anger to vent, too, but this is still a friendly match.” Maxwell explains, ducking behind a hill.

The Jager beckons. Bring it on, youngster, it seems to say. It takes aim, continuing to follow the Dutchman's path as the mono-eyed mech leaps and jukes its way over the central hill and behind cover once more.

Ok, if that's what you decided, I guess I'll remove the unneeded baggage. FIRST ACTION; ACTIVATING THE QUICK SWAP SLOT ON MY SHIELD ARM.
What that does is it drops the arm system from my machine. And I have to calculate my weight again. That is also the arm with my ball in chain.
That is 2.5 tons from the arm. 2.5 tons from the armor. 0.5 tons from the hand, 3.5 tons from my ball and chain, and 4 tons from my shield. 13 tons. My machine now weighs 26.5 tons. It lost three thrusters from that, putting it at 18 total, but with the new weight and config, the weight, thruster ratio is 0.679.
That means my machine is a category lighter and has a standard move of 18 MA plus thrusters. I can now move in and out of your range for a fraction of the cost. I then use 3 MA from my booster pack along with my remaining action to keep the speed going.
I still have the +2 WA beam shiv. Your move.
>>
>>1576381

Did you literally just tear off your own arm to go faster?

He needs pain to fuel his journey to rise to the top.

>yfw Dutch is secretly a crab
I guess I'll just stare in wonderment if thats all.
>>
>>1576389
Yes. Yes I did. I could put it back on with an action too, because quick SWAP. It was one of the features I made for the Dutchman. A machine that won't be slowed down. I wanted to show it off in the special event, but OH WELL! THIS WORKS JUST FINE FOR ME! AHAHAHAHA!
>>
>>1576381
Huh, I wondered why you went for the melee loadout.

Wouldn't you lose 1/6th of your thruster speed though? Or are the rules different with quick change mounts?
>>
>>1576398

Alright you absolute madman, what's your next action?
>>
>>1576401
Not really. Clean break and it's something the Quick Change mount says. So I recalculated it. Incidwentally, I am thankful for the person who taught me about weapon charge. Even if I go past 16 MA, I hit the Jager at a even footing and it does a lot of damage. And from the Sagister, I learned that it's just avians who can't fly backwards. So hang on a second. I need to calculate.
>>
>>1576381
Wait did you actually move somewhere else after that?
>>
>>1576410
You're welcome, Dutch.

But man, I never considered that as a use for a quick mount. That would be bonus points for me.
>>
>>1576410
I thought that Hybrids were the only ones that could fly backwards? did I miss something?
>>
>>1576412
I pretty much just showed off a bit to keep speed up. There is a reason why I picked that spot. For 4 move, I can fly straight at you from the higher angle and still hit you from there with a charge. I can then move in reverse for 1 booster MA to land back on 1314, take two steps back, and fall into 1513.
>>
>>1576417
Humanoids can too, but it's only at half MA. It's like how tanks can do the same thing on the ground.
>>
>>1576422
Don't think it's half MA. Where does it say that?

>>1576432
Incidentally how much boost did you use getting to where you pulled off your arm?
>>
>>1576432
Ya, kinda a silly rule. It would only be advantageous if you had 2 or less MA per action.
>>
>>1576442
None. I could move 12 MA normally with two actions. so that is 10 of my 50 done. Wait. If I used my free action to move to 1412 facing 1313, It would take 3 boost MA to get there, and about 3 to get into starting position again. That saves me a extra MA!
>>
>>1576420

So where do you end your turn, specifically?
>>
>>1576458
Back where I was started which was 1513. Not sure if since I moved 13 MA for the charge I don't worry about the speed penalty, but thats up to you!
>>
>>1576464
So to clarify, you detached and then you span around in a circle or something to keep momentum and now that its the next turn you are charging and then scooting away again?
>>
>>1576476
Yup. Can do it several more times too. I can also reposition myself for better targetting of you and less drain.

Explain to me how the fuck you moved, attacked, and returned to your original spot covering 26 hexes in the process and for fuck's sake be a LOT more explicit when you describe your turns from now on.
>>
>>1576491
Actually, hey Mr. Wong, would 1011 be protected against the Jager's line of sight?
>>
>>1576501
I did. I still can walk 2 MA and the upper limit is 24 without counting walking. Mind you, I found a better position there, but I am willing to reposition again. I can also split my jet pack between move actions. Just have a limit of how much I can use a turn.
>>
>>1576503

When you explain to me what you just did I'll think about it. Action 1, you removed your arm. Action 2?

I'm getting a sense of "I'm going to exploit the rules as hard as possible to punish Jager for my perceived humiliation in the Special Event", and you know what? I don't like it. This is a friendly tournament and I'm about half a step from declaring that momentum doesn't work that way.
>>
>>1576513
Well, they were two seperate turns to start. Action one remove arm. Action 2, move 12 MA using three boost to move around and then return to my spot. Then Hunter took his turn and didn't move. Then I took my turn. First action charge in, second action move back.
Then Hunter's turn and he said he would stay there still.
>>
Dutchman, don't just start another turn without permission. You removed your arm and circled. So far, that's all you've done, and I'm going to pour myself a shot and think about whether it would be better to let that work or say it doesn't actually increase your momentum cap.

Jager, are you actually...just going to sit there? Is that your actual turn?
>>
>>1576523
>>1576530
I apologize if it seems petty, but I am not doing it out of spite. This was a plan I had for fighting the Jager for quite some time. Well, part of one. I want to fight him to the best of my knowledge and the best of my abilities. I bully not out of malice or hate. Thats why I asked, because line of sight is iffy for me. I am willing to move somewhere else if I am told to.
>>
>>1576501
I think he moved 9 hexes and then boosted 3 to reach me and then ended that movement with a melee charge and then moved back the same way. Presumably he walked at some point.
>>1576513
I think he just spun around on the spot or something. Then I continued to not move.
>>1576530
I'm not that worried, Its not that different from dodging two rounds of quick attacks at bad accuracy thanks to all the movement. Or one round of attacks from the murderbird. If he wants to waste his scary boosters thats fine by me.
>>
>>1576537
Once again I meant actions instead of rounds.
>>
>>1576534
>>1576537

Alright, I'm sorry Dutch, I misread some things and yes, what you're doing works. Continue, gentlemen. Also, yes, 1011's LoS is blocked, and a quick line test confirmed it.
>>
>>1576555
It's alright. I understand that this whole things makes us tense(and forgetting the matchup pic likely caused some concerns), but to me, I already won. This is me at my best and craziest and showing off the last few tricks I have. Aside from that, would the initial charge be at a penalty since I move 13? Need to know if roll 12s or 13s.
>>
>>
>>1576567

Unless you move 17 or more, no.
>>
>>1576571
Alright. This should be the the route I take. With the help of a walk to 1012 facing 913, I should be expending 5 MA of boost per round trip. I'll do my first roll, and it should take 8 rolls for me to exhaust my booster pack that way.

I'm ready to start rolling dodges and parry's to speed things along if thats cool. My plan might seem counter intuitive but I'm not really fast enough to chase him down yet. Just one question though, do I parry easier with the glaive or the shield? The rules are a little unclear.
>>
Also I have been playing too much XCOM. My first reaction was to go into overwatch.
>>
>>1576589
Glaive since it's WA 1. You'll roll at 13 with it and 12 with the shield. It can only take 7 hits though. Or is it 6K base? You didn't list its weight, so I don't know.
>>
>>1576580
>>1576589

Go ahead, then.

Also, Jager, you parry better with your shield.
>>
>>1576589
You've can parry with your glaive, but if you succeed, that arm takes damage. This is going pretty fast and is a 8kill strike. EMW means your glaive blocks 2 damage, and your arm blocks 1. You can block twice with your glaive arm.. then it's gone.

If I had one regret its that everyone I matched up against was so fast that the safest option was to let them all come to me. Other than that I'm happy. I expected to get wrecked in the first round by patches and his sniper.

I don't mind. Hell, a single roll being thrown as the big finale, with the one arm melee charge versus Lightning charging, with the higher attack winning would be fine for me to. “Time to lighten the load a little.” Maxwell grunts, observing the unflappable Jager from over the top of the hill. It doesn't move, waiting for a clear shot. Suddenly, he taps a few buttons, and the Dutchman's left arm pops from its mounting, floating up above the hill still holding the ball and chain.

“Mmmph?” Skunk scratches the top of his sealed envionment helmet, staring at it. He's an old fellow, but even he's never seen this kind of tactic before. What is Max, a crab?

The Dutchman's thruster systems reorient for maximum thrust, and his booster ignites. The green mech zips around in aimless, speed-garnering circles like a giant mosquito, then charges, its glowing blade lunging forward like a proboscis.

The Jager dodges by a hair, but quick as a flash the Dutchman is away and back across the trenches, once more zipping behind cover. “I can't afford to get close.” Maxwell says to himself, “It has to be hit and run, that's the only way.”

The Jager hunkers down. Although silent, Skunk is resolved. Enduring, surviving, outlasting, these are the things he knows how to do. He can't be afraid of the Dutchman when he's faced real life-or-death battles.

One sweep, and the Jager's shield interposes itself. The Dutchman's relatively short, narrow plasma blade is like a nail, and the Dutchman's powerful booster pack and remaining thrusters are the hammer. Still, the Zulu-style shield is remarkably large and sturdy, and despite getting a gash that mars its surface it survives.

Two sweeps, and the Jager ducks.

Three, and it sidesteps before moving promptly back into position, crosshairs chasing the Dutchman across the screen even if they're always a step or so behind. The Myrmidon and Loggerhead have stopped moving, arms resting on the edges of their trenches as they watch in awe. Presumably the Wraith is doing the same. Red Siren, her Archen leaning forward in its throne next to Roarke Starwind's Black Ogre, doesn't bother to tell them to get back to patrolling.

Four, and it parries again, the very top of the oval-shaped shield being sliced off as the tip of the plasma blade sweeps so close to the jager's visual sensors it nearly overloads them.

The Jager reels back, and the Dutchman lands right in front of it. Maxwell is pouring everything into his blows, his normally measured and tactical style enhanced by his fury and sense of helplessness at what was done to Mako. The near stab to the face slices cleanly downward, carving a deep line into the chest armor of the Pumpkinseed Jager.

...Yet, so is Skunk. Raw stubbornness and determination empower him to continue, dodging the sixth and seventh charges. As skilled as his opponent is, raw spirit empowers the heavier mech, and its crosshairs continue to chase the Dutchman as its booster pack flickers and starts to die. On the eighth, it sidesteps, and as the Dutchman lands on one knee the boosterpack finally sputters out. The Jager's crosshairs lock onto the one-eyed, one-armed, green mech. Just as its finger tightens on the trigger, the Dutchman turns, its blade slashing upwards in a final, desperate slash.

The entire crowd gasps...and the Jager's cockpit ball comes flying free. All eyes turn towards the huge chair of black metal, and the Knuckle Kaiser as it stands up, bringing its hands together in silent applause. The Dutchman catches the cockpit ball, and bows deeply.

“That's the fight, and what a fight it was! I've never seen anything like that in my entire career!” Red Siren sounds a little awestruck, “The Dutchman will advance to face the Lightning in the finals! Well done, both of you! Well done indeed!”

Just had an idea.

Why don't we go and try to bring Fairchild in for questioning since we have that evidence she could be linked to Nunez's attack and subtly goad her or Bethany into doing or saying something stupid. We stream the entire thing real time to everyone watching the tournament and she can't say it's made up. We could even bring Regina for extra credibility.

It was lot of fun! I will miss it...
But hey, you don't actually need to kill everyone as soon as the arc ends, some of them will probably still be around after this, and the other can always appear agains if there is a reason to.

Well... The only thing I'm dissapointed about is that I thought that this was going to end in a multiple squad fight for our lives against SOUL MP with people exploding left and right... But maybe that was a void threat...
>>
>>1579340

>>
>>1579419
Yep, but it could be interscalated between main characters battles, the waifu squad, and ship combat, for multi episode all-out battle against another faction.

It would be a hell of an ending for the arc.

...But to be true I half expected that you were going to try to kill half of us before the end of something... Everything just looked too "OK" to be true...

The Dutchman is cleaned up, its arm restored and readied, in less time than anyone thought possible, and at last, the end of the tournament arrives. This time, the guardians each represent a different fighting style. Walkure's missiles to the north, the Fiddler's sword furthest south, and in the center the Blitz chugs along with its mighty cannon.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I must confess, if I was capable of feeling silly I'd feel that way right now. After all, you know who these two are. Maxwell Hammer's Dutchman with its versatility and the pilot's tactical acumen, facing down James McClintock's ADF-01 Lightning with its unrelenting power and the pilot's peerless courage! Both of them have struggled hard to get this far, facing even battles, outright mismatches, the fulfillment of grudges, and even duels against their close friends! It all comes down to this, folks! Don't miss one second of it! Who will win it all? The Dutchman, adept at seizing victory by the horns, or the juggernautish Lightning? Let's find out!” The Archen points skyward, and golden fireworks erupt all around as the two mecha rise to take their places, “Come on and SLAM!”

Mimicking its tactic from the last fight, the Dutchman throws aside everything but its beam axe, and ejects that arm.

The holoscreens all project simultaneous greenlights, and the two mecha roar forward! There's nothing more to say, no more inner monologue. Both men are determined to win, and win at all costs. There's just no other way forward.

“Lightning, strike!”

“Fly, my Dutchman!”

The two pilots cry out as they charge towards each other, thrusters blazing. There's no avoidance, this time, no complex strategies, simply raw speed and power. The contrails of their thrusters seem almost to describe an offset yin-yang symbol, as the Dutchman circles right to land at the base of the central hill while the Lightning circles north, back to a wall and facing a trench. Once again, its huge sword glitters in its hands.

“Hit it, Roarke.” Red Siren says quietly.

“It's time, isn't it?” Roarke Starwind agrees.

'I've paid my dues...
Time after time...
I've done my sentence...but committed no crime!' Freddie Mercury's voice rings out over the loudspeakers.

“The hell? Music this time?” McClintock scratches his head. Maxwell just smiles and shakes his head, unsurprised.

'And bad mistakes...I've made a few.' The guitar kicks in, and Freddie's voice gains intensity.

'I've had my share of sand kicked in my face but I've come through!'

The Dutchman and Lightning close on each other. Just like every other fight the Lightning has been in...it comes down to one ultimate blow. Only this time, its sword doesn't strike first. Maxwell isn't just fighting for himself. He's fighting for a girl. He's fighting for his kids. He's fighting for the sake of everything that matters to him.

The axe speaks, once, missing the parrying blade of the red-and-white mech by less than a foot...and the Lightning breaks in two, James McClintock smiling with resignation as he ejects, “I don't need to win them all to be the champ.” He sighs, “Alright, you squirt of a witch...” He contacts the Walkure, and makes a proposition. Hell, he's a damned good pilot, he'll make a damned good pirate too.

'And I need to go on and on and on and on!'

“THE DUTCHMAN!” Red Siren roars, “THE DUTCHMAN HAS DONE IT! MAXWELL HAMMER IS THE TOURNEY CHAMPION!”

'WEEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIENDS!
AND WE'LL KEEP ON FIGHTING TILL THE END!
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!' Freddie pours his heart out as the Dutchman strikes a victory pose. A posse of Harpies fly down from the wings. One re-attaches the Dutchman's arm, two more place a giant nanofiber cape of vivid black with a collar of gold laurel leaves and the Iron Kestrels emblem on its back around the green mech's shoulders.

'No time for losers! 'Cause we are the champions...of the wooooorld!'

In the background, Akai is firing all missiles, letting off a celebratory volley. Mai smiles, and does the same, plumes of light exploding everywhere.

The song continues as the Dutchman does a victory lap before the cheering crowds, before taking a knee in front of the two tourney referees. The Knuckle Kaiser stands up, Roarke Starwind's voice echoing across the comms, “Well done, my friend. Maxwell Hammer, I am officially raising you to the rank of Captain in the Iron Kestrels.”

“I need no ship, Admiral, all I want is a place for the parentless children of the belt, a haven for those whose lives have been splintered by the galaxy's cruelties.” Maxwell responds, quietly.

Neither of them can hear the kids chanting their mentor's name, or see the hope in the eyes of the remaining Green Skulls orphans...but it's there.

“And you shall have it. In lieu of the Goshawk, I declare your governorship over the asteroid 16-Psyche's twin colonies, charging you with the responsibility of repairing the damaged one and making them both fit places for habitation. Rise. Your triumph was exceptional. Tonight, put your troubles behind you...” The Knuckle Kaiser spreads its arms wide, “Eat! Drink! Be merry! Tomorrow, serious business is afoot, so for tonight lose yourselves in revelry!”

Akai, meanwhile, frantically turns down the volume on Captain Oda-sama's loud and enthusiastic assent to the message she just sent. McClintock was always welcome to become a Storm Dragon with that katana...but the need for a First Mate with some experience and strength was quite apparent. She does her best, but she's in no hurry to be anything but Bosun, a position she's quite good at in her own opinion. Mostly because she's kawaii.

Sounds odd alright. What if you connected to the internet on your pc through your phone?
>>
>>1586593
That is true.
Also, I did some calculations of our fight. Converting the MA into meters and the actions into seconds, for 1 minute and 30 seconds, the Dutchman was going 432 km/h. Which is 268.432 miles per hour. For a minute and a half, it was tied for the Third Fastest Race care in the world.
>>
>>1587405
wait, forgot the extra walking speed. 468 km/h and 290.8 mph. Faster than the fastest race car.
>>
>>1587420
Gotta go fast man. I think the templar went the fastest overall but that didst really work out that well for him.
>>
>>1587116
Let me see...
>>1587428
It would have worked if I knew about Weapon Charge back then.
>>
>>1591807
Weapon charge was a pretty big game changer for many of us. It added a neat use for low kill, but high accuracy weapons. I have been working on some designs that properly use it, with the machine having a natural 32 MA and a high acc beam axe.
It ALSO allowed me to look at weapon mounts and use them as thruster platforms. An idea that could further boost the Kaiser's speed and make up for lack of space.
>>
>>1593286
I have started looking at mechariders after I saw that they could carry 5 times their weight in mechs rather than just 1. Could be a handy utility thing to cart around a squad.
>>
>>1593297
Aye. It makes me wonder if things like reactive shields or the reentry system could be fitted onto them. A drop pod for going knuckle deep in the enemy's territory.
>>
>>1593302
They can. You just build them like a normal mech.
>>
>>1593381
I mean if they would protect the mechs riding it. That way, the riding mechs don't need it. Also, might make a Dutchman Custom for Maxwell. Give it a extra 40 cp and some extra tricks.
>>
>>1593542
Pretty sure they do protect the mechs onboard but that would require a ruling from Wong.

Orbital Drop Pods make sense though. Although, it might actually just be more cost-effective to make a reusable dropship.

My new pet project is this thing. A Roadstriker scale transformable mech unit capable of entering and leaving atmosphere. Comes with a sword and twin autocannons. I just don't know how to represent the invincibility dodge.

WHoops, forgot the picture.

Do we have any other ship submissions? Because I put two out but I don't remember anyone elses.

Here's the one named after Clemmy:

Farragut-Class Destroyer:

Stats:
Heavy Striker Hull (1000 Kills, 10 spaces all occupied) [ 5,000 CP ]
Heavy Striker Armor (50 SP) [ 2,500 CP ]

Weaponry: [ 5222 CP, 7 Spaces ]
Fore Heavy Beam Battery (WA 0, 110 Hex range, 200K, 2525 CP, 3 Spaces, Forward 180-degree Arc only)
Aft Heavy Beam Battery (WA 0, 110 Hex range, 200K, 2525 CP, 3 Spaces, Forward 180-degree Arc only)
Deluxe CIWS (WA +0, 13 Hex range, 10K, 172 CP, Space 1, All-Around Arc, automatically attacks any hostile mech that enters range with no penalty and the equivalent of an infinite burst weapon effect)

Subassemblies: [ 1500 CP, 2 spaces ]
1 Passenger Space (250 people, 1 Space, 500 CP)
1 Mecha Bay ( 25 Mecha, 1 space, 1000 CP )

Maneuverability: [ x.2, 1 Space ]
Takes 5 Hexes of forward travel to change heading 60 degrees.
Takes a -8 to hit mecha (except with CIWS)
Mecha get +8 to hit it.
Can fly 14 Hexes per turn, not counting the Microgate Projector.

Total Cost: 17,066 CP

I made two, but I'm not sure either's acceptable for the quest. Wong wouldn't tell me if they were or not.

The first one's from a mod for Starsector. Dutch gave me the idea for the Catapults on the second one.
>>
>>1593579
You could easily make something that can carry 4-5 mechs for 140 CP if you just want it to put them on a planet. Even more if you use weight inefficiency.
>>
>>1593770
Yeah, but spending 140 CP on a disposable dropship is wasteful. Ideally, you want something that can get the mechs onto the planet and get them off the planet. If you want something that JUST gets them on the planet, then it should be way cheaper.
>>
>>1593778
You probably could. The only problem is adding weight.
>>
>>1593778
Disregard the last one. This one has the right MA. https://pastebin.com/f6e7dd5h
>>
>>1593832
Honestly, that's pretty reasonable, seeing as it can enter atmosphere, stay in flight, release 5 or 6 (30-40 Ton) mechs, wait around for the mechs to return, and then exit atmosphere.

It would be possible to make a stealth variant that carries 3 mechs for about the same cost, I think. Maybe.

Alternatively, you could make a Smaller corvette scaled Mecharider and use the Sub-mecha configuration. Actually, how do the Pumpkinseed-II's control the tiny Jets they ride around on?
>>
>>1593909
Mechariders dont need a pilot, whoever rides it can just control it. Also that thing can carry 395 tons so about 10 30-40 ton mechs.
>>
>>1593917
I have no idea how I messed the math up on that. But you're right. It's actually great for orbital insertions, especially when you're pulling off a Normandy style invasion.

You should make a smaller stealth variant too.
>>
>>1593917
Wait, why does it need a tail? Give it wings instead.
>>
>>1593923
Cheaper than two wings but still adds enough weight. Also it can try to entangle things I guess.
>>
>>1593929
You could get rid of the head and tail and just use the wings instead. It would get bonus MA then, which is more useful than trying to entangle things with a -9 MV. -11 when counting the B. Mod. from the booster pack.

Gotta say, that thing is ungodly clumsy. It might be a better idea to downsize it.
>>
>>1593937
Speed and maneuverability isnt really meant to be its selling point. For transporting crap into orbit the heavier it is the better.
>>
>>1593952
That's the thing, if it's not maneuverable, it's going to get shot down easier. And if it gets shot down, then it's going to be taking 10 mechs with it. If you downsized it, not only would it be cheaper, but it would be harder to hit and wouldn't take as many mechs down with it if it gets shot down.
>>
>>1593957
Even if its 30 tons its still going to be at a -7 from being a mecharider and the boosterpack. Better off to make it big and tanky. Also good luck shooting something falling in orbit/moving 109 hexes a turn.
>>
>>1593972
There's no defense bonus or penalty for going super fast. You only get penalties to attack when going super fast.
>>
>>1594006
Makes it hard to get in range though.
>>
>>1594013
That is indeed true, but if it gets shot down while waiting for its mecha complement to do its thing, it would cause a number of issues. Technically, it's a great shuttlecraft as it gets its loads to the ground and back to orbit pretty reliably. For combat use, it's a bit less effective but I can see the uses. Ideally, it should just get its cargo to the ground, then leave the combat zone, and then come around later to pick them up. It can't provide any kind of air-support.

Other Useful mechariders would be:

A stealth reentry variant that drops 5 mechs for special forces operations.

A single-mech re-entry Mecharider. Basically an ODST pod. No sensors, and only has thrusters to redirect movement, slow down above the target, and keep the pod going fast enough that flying mechs can't engage it. Might be cheap enough that it can be considered disposable but can also be retrieved after battles.
>>
Anybody else think that the Weight Class naming system needs some work?
>>
Forgot to add the boosters and stuff. Still cheaper. https://pastebin.com/UjyQUcVr

>>1594066
If you are fighting while riding one of those things you are doing it wrong. Let me see about a thing for one guy.
>>1594071
The entire thing needs some work.
>>
>>1594066
https://pastebin.com/0Kumkb8g
I was going to make a fully disposable mecharider but then I realized it would be cheaper to just buy a re-entry package. Like around 4 times cheaper. I'm not even sure if a mecharider gives the rider the bonus of stealth or re-entry but its a fun idea.
Its a pity there isnt more utility stuff you can do besides drop smoke and shit, I always think that stuffs fun. Guess I could look at EW systems.
>>
>>1594137
Yeah, the cloaking is the main advantage of that pod although >>1594081 is probably better for the kind of stealth mission where multiple mechs would need to be inserted.

I suppose the single-mech stealth pod would be super-useful for the S-Betta.

Incidentally, would it be a good idea to include thruster costs for a weapon to take into account modularity?
>>
>>1597421
The Betta could also just buy a re-entry package for cheaper. I dont know about weapons. I feel like you would need to put them on a pretty light mecharider for them to have a good chance to hit or make them blast missiles or something.
>>
>>1597433
Oh, right. That's how re-entry packages are supposed to work in the first place.

Maybe give the stealth pod a Booster Pack for stealthy exfiltration too?

For the weapons, I was honestly thinking that they should have built-in thrusters to off-set the weight when they're picked up. Bookkeeping-wise, the thruster cost should be listed next to the weapon itself.

It was my internet provider, having to use a VPN now...

But well, let us begin with the Kestrel Armory.
