In the year 1986, crime in America is at an all-time high. Criminals, drugs, and guns flow into the country from everywhere in the world, and the gateway to it all is the coastal paradise, Heat City. On the neon-soaked streets of this beating heart of scum and villany, you can get whatever you want -- if you can pay the price. You are Johnny the thug, and ever since you agreed to take one small job for the Bratva, your life has gone sideways. One thing led to another as you made enemies of one half of the city's underworld, then the other half. With the help of some new friends -- Alex the enforcer, Nick the thief, and the Yamada family -- you went all-in and led a daring heist on the Triad's skyscraper fortress, Dragon's Nest. It went great until you got shot and fell off the roof, twenty-five stories down. With luck or fate on your side, and the help of your friends, you survived to tell the tale. But you haven't forgotten that someone out there has been playing games with you, pitting the city's criminal syndicates against each other with you caught in the middle. You're going to find out who it is, and make them pay.

>>1568630"Welcome back to the night broadcast on RK-1 Radio, everyone! Before the break, we heard the newest hit single from pop sensation Baron. I'd tell you the name of the song, but due to a contract dispute between Baron and his record label, the song is titled an unprounceable symbol! Do we have a name for that yet, Rachel? "Weird twisty thing, the song"? How about "the song formerly known as Baron's hit single"? No? Rachel's shaking her head at me, folks."All right, on to the news. Let me sum this up for you tonight, listeners. Heat City is going crazy. I mean, we all know what it's like to live here. This is a city famous over the whole world for crazy shit. But we're reaching a whole new level. For months it feels like you can't even turn on a radio without hearing a story about a gunfight in a gimp club or a car chase through a mall."And now the gangs are at each others' throats. Gunfights in the streets, car chases, firebombs. The cops and politicians won't help us. How are we supposed to concentrate on what's important, like buying the right clothes or being seen at the right parties, when all this is going on?"Nothing to distract us from our problems like pop music, right, listeners? Up next is a classic track from Heat City favorites Love Puncher, with "Space Train To Punch Planet.""You take a deep drag of your cigarette, exhale, and tap the ash out the open window of your parked Lincoln Continental. The ash lands in the gutter, alongside the detritus you'll find in an average Heat City street, even here in a ritzy neighborhood like Tangerine Grove. Blunt needles, sticky condoms, and broken glass reflecting the glittering high-rises above. The sidewalk is mostly empty of pedestrians, just an occasional stumbling drunk or group of meandering gangsters. A taxi drives past. The block is quiet, except for faint echoes of music coming from the parking garage across the street. It's been a few weeks since all that stuff went down. That falling off a building stuff. Then that getting shot and crashing a car stuff. A normal man would've died a few times over in there. But if there's one thing you're good at, it's taking a beating.Maybe not the skill you would've chosen, if you had a choice about it. Better to not take the beating in the first place. At least you're still here.
>>1568642"Give me a cigarette, will ya?" asks Roxie, lounging in the passenger seat with her boots on the dash."Didn't you bring your own?" you ask, fishing in your shirt pocket for your pack."I forgot, all right? Shut up and hand it over." She lights up, the flame briefly illuminating her face in the dark space of the car, shadowed from the neon signs overhead. "You were zoning out. You meet her eyes, not acting tough, but not flinching either. A few moments pass. Roxie sighs, unrolls the window, and crosses her ankles over the window rim, leaving her boots hanging in the air by the side mirror. "Satisfied?""Good enough," you say. "Other than that, I was thinking I'm glad to be in fighting shape again. But I spent a few weeks out of commission, what with all the broken bones and all. I hope I haven't gotten rusty after my little vacation.""Is that what you call a huge gunfight and a car chase? A little vacation? Oh, and apparently on your big gay bro night, you power slammed an alligator while drunk?""Apparently I did," you admit. You barely remembered the incident the next morning, just a haze of wrestling in murky water. You were prepared to write it off a weird dream. Except that Ken had the entire thing recorded on your home video camera. "There's video evidence. But since then, I've taken it easy. Ever since I had the guys over, there's been no funny business. Just rest and recovery.""Yeah?" Roxie takes a drag and blows smoke out the open window. She measures you with her gaze. "So are you going to be ready tonight, cowboy?""You bet. I'm ready. Looking forward to it, really.""Me too," Roxie says."Ready to go?" you ask.She nods."Let's do it, then."(Continued)
>>1568733You and Roxie get out of your car and shut the doors. The two of you walk side-by-side across the quiet street, trails of cigarette smoke following each of you. You walk to the parking garage and descend down the ramp, heading towards the sounds of the music. Soundtrack: Hotline Miami 2 -- Decade Dancehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btty425aWp8On the lower levels, you find just what your tip said you would. A meeting of Heat City's drift racing circuit. Flashy cars in bright colors line up alongside each other, revving engines. Car owners, racers, gangsters, flunkies, and hangers-on cluster in groups, smoking cigarettes, flashing guns, flirting with girls, chatting in a dozen languages -- but mostly Japanese. According to Akane and popular rumor, the Yakuza use these thugs as their muscle whenever they get in a pinch. These are Kojiro's reserve troops, and the word on the street has it they're being mobilized, big time. But not if you have anything to say about it.>Punch the first Yakuza you see in the face.>Find the guy in charge.>Walk around, talk to someone else.>Get a read on the situation.

>>1568757There's a time for diplomacy, you think as a Yakuza thug swaggers up to you, barking a challenge, pulling back his jacket to reveal a gun stuck in his waistband. And there's a time to bust skulls. That time is now.You reach out and grab the gangster by his collar. You punch him in the face once, twice, then deliver a kick to his stomach that sends him stumbling backwards into a concrete pillar. You shove your hand into his face, slamming the back of his skull against the pillar. The gangster slides to the ground, a wet stain of blood on the concrete where his head struck. The groupies and flunkies around you shriek in alarm and start to scatter. The gangsters and racers stand for moment, agape. The music continues.Roxie laughs. "Nice one, Johnny. Here I was afraid you were going to get clever on me. I like this way better." She cracks her knuckles into her fistThe nearby group of eight or so racers grabs up anything nearby they can use as a weapon -- knives, crowbars, tire irons -- and comes towards you, shouting threats. After so long fighting against Yakuza and alongside Ryuji, you're starting to recognize the various Japanese ways of saying "Fuck you, asshole, I'm about to fuck you up."Behind the racers, a group of Yakuza gangsters is readying their actual weapons, pistols and katanas. The first racer reaches you, swinging a crowbar. Roxie steps forward and delivers a jab-jab-uppercut to his face, knocking him sprawling. "Fucking punks!" she shouts. >>1568834The racers close in on you. Two of them are working up their nerve to charge. From inside your jacket, you pull out a now-familiar weight. "I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine," you say, hefting the meat cleaver. The two racers charge you, shouting a war cry. You don't like the look of their coordinated attack, so you take the initiatve and throw the cleaver. It buries itself in the shoulder of a surprised racer, who falls backward. The second, thrown off balance by the sudden disappearance of his friend, is easy prey for you to step in, wrestle the crowbar out of his hands, and give him a solid thwack diagonally across the temple, sending him sprawling to the ground.A third racer stabs at you with a knife. You swing the crowbar and knock the knife out of his hands, but don't land a hit on him. He backs up with three of his friends, putting some of the cars between you to regroup and steel their nerves. Two of them are left groaning and bleeding at your feet, and two at Roxie's.Gunshots ring out, and a car windshield next to you shatters. you see the gangsters are spreading out, moving into firing positions. You draw your pistol, the M1911, and fire back, forcing them to keep their heads down, but not drawing any blood. You duck down behind a car, gaining some concealment, and take a moment to wrestle the cleaver out of the racer's shoulder, drawing a spurt of blood and a pained cry.You crouch behind the car, holding a pistol in one hand and meat cleaver in the other. And you've still got something big in reserve. >Assault the racers.>Assault the gangsters.>Lay down fire with your big gun.

>>1568902You pull out the M60 machine gun, affectionately named "The Pig" back in Vietnam. Having to wear a long, heavy coat in this weather to hide lugging this thing around is annoying, and a little sweaty. But it's worth it to see the looks on the Yakuza's faces when they see you take it out.You brace the bipod on the hood of a bright neon green sports car, and level the barrel at the gangsters. They panic and dive on the ground as you pull the trigger, laying down a barrage of fire. The thunder of the gunfire booms through the garage. You're not sure if you get any of them, but you make sure they stay the fuck down and don't interfere with Roxie beating the shit out of those racers. You spare a quick glance to look over and see how she's doing. She's knocked down one, but she's right in the middle of the three who are standing, so you can't get a clear shot. You focus on suppressing the gangsters and their firearms, until--The door to the stairwell by the elevator bursts open. Six Yakuza thugs in black suits pour out, wielding katanas. You swivel the machine gun in their direction and lay on the trigger. Two of them are shot by the stairwell, blood-red stains erupting on their white shirts. The door blasts into pieces. A third gangster is cut down he runs at you.Pretty good shooting for a two-man gun. But that still leaves three really pissed-off gangsters with big swords about to carve you up like a rebellious peasant. You can get out of their reach, but you don't have time to bring the M60 with you.>Abandon the M60 for now, regroup with Roxie.>Stand your ground, fight toe-to-toe with the meat cleaver and pistol.>Call for backup.

>>1568989You step back from the M60, grabbing your bloodied cleaver, but you're unprepared for the ferocity of the assault. The katanas outrange your cleaver, even with your height advantage, and the three Yakuza, clearly having trained together, know how to spread out and attack from three sides without interfering with each other. You draw your M1911 with your left hand and fire the rest of the magazine at the gangster to your left, striking him twice in chest. The other two get past your guard with quick darting slashes, and you feel a searing, tearing sensation as their blades rip through skin and muscle.Fuck this. You barrel forward, shouldering one of them aside, then bury the cleaver in the other's throat with a splash of crimson. As he falls to the ground, clutching at the blade in his throat, you wrestle the katana out of his hands just in time to parry a blow from the first gangster as he recovers from your shoulder charge. So not only are you bleeding from multiple slash wounds, but your jacket is ruined. And you just got this jacket, too. Goddamn. You fall back, clutching your stolen katana and empty pistol, wondering if you have time to reload. The last remaining katana wielder closes in.You glance over at Roxie. The racers are all on the ground, knocked out or moaning as they clutch bruises and breaks. But Roxie's crouched behind one of the cars clutching at her head. Either she's having a freakout, or she took a hit from one of those assholes and needs a moment to shake it off---- which leaves you totally vulnerable to those assholes with pistols over by the cars. Who, now that you aren't firing a huge machine gun at them, have all the time in the world they need to line up their aim at you and --BANG!
And that's all for tonight, anons. I'll be back tomorrow to resume Thug Quest 23. Thanks for playing!
>>1569057From your writing, it sounds like you count 4's as *painful* successes.I think we should have gone with the 'nades. Blow the cars up with them. Then again, I think we should ALWAYS have two grenades. Ideally more.
>>1569055The gunshot echoes through the parking garage. One of the Yakuza topples, smacking his head against the car as he falls. A second shot rings out, then a third, and two more gangsters fall, leaving bloodstains on the bright white panel of the sleek racecar behind them. The remaining gangsters retreat to cover behind cars and concrete pillars."You didn't think I was going to let you have all the fun, did you?" Alex saunters down the entrance ramp with the easy confidence and watchfulness of a panther on the hunt. She fires another couple bursts of supressing fire.Looks like Alex has those assholes covered. For now, you've got to keep your attention on the gangster in front of you.The two of you circle each other warily at close range, your katanas extended. The other guy is able to stay on the move, keep you between him and Alex, so she can't get a clear shot. He's starting to get desperate, with the odds against him like this, but that's when a man can be at his most dangerous. You don't want to take any chances. You probe at him with a quick slash, but he parries it and, screaming a war cry, raises his blade high--A blur of red and black approaches. Roxie leaps into the air and delivers a flying knee to the gangster's back. The Yakuza sprawls face-first onto the concrete in front of you. Roxie leans down over him, reaches under to grab his shirt and flip him over, and smashes him in the face with the other fist once, twice, three times. She lets go, and he falls back, bleeding from the nose and mouth.Roxie stands up, breathing heavily, blood dripping from her taped fists. She pushes her hair back out of her eyes. Then she looks up at you and beams a smile."Thanks, Roxie," you say, as Alex joins you. "You too, Alex.""You all right?" asks Roxie."Yeah, I'm fine, just a few flesh wounds. It stings like a bitch, but no real damage. I think. Oh, they ruined my jacket, though." You take a moment to pull off your slashed-up jacket and drop it on the ground. "Pisses me off.""How many left?" asks Alex, swapping a new magazine into her assault rifle."Right now, two or three over there," you say, gesturing in the direction she was shooting. "But we might have company soon."Alex nods, taking a look around the room, assessing the situation. "Okay. You guys take care of your friend there. Leave the rest to me." She raises the rifle's stock to her shoulder again and moves at an angle while aiming at the remaining gangsters, firing three-round bursts over their heads to keep them pinned down while she moves to flank them.
>>1571497You sit on the ground leaning against the car, looking at the guy on the ground with the bloody nose. "You did leave him alive, right?"Roxie says, "I only broke his nose in, like, two or three places." She squats next to him, grabs him by the collar, hauls him up to a sitting position, and slaps him in the face a couple times. "Hey, wake up! Tell me all about Kojiro's "Monsters". I want to know their names, their weapons, their habits. Their favorites colors. Everything.""The monsters? I don't know shit, man. None of us do. "All right, fine. You're not their biographer. But you better give me something you can use.""Well ... After, we can decide whether to cut him loose to the wolves, or--""Wait, shut up for a second," Roxie says, cutting you off. The garage is silent for a few moments other the groans of wounded Yakuza. Outside, you can hear powerful car engines, growing louder as they get closer. "They're here."Tires squeal and engines roar as two flashy, colorful street race cars, driving side by side, take the corner at high speed, pull into the parking garage, and screech to a halt in front of you. Two more follow them, then two more, until eight rainbow-colored rice burners form a double-layered wall of cars blocking your exit. The doors of the rearmost car open. >>1571650Five more of the eight cars open their doors, and more Yakuza racers step out, armed with pistols and Uzi submachine guns. You grab your M60 up off the hood of the car, plant your feet, and pull the trigger. The gun bucks like crazy in your hands, but you wrestle it down and keep the barrel pointed in almost the right direction. The volume of fire is enough to force the racers to duck and keep their heads down. They fire back blindly. One of the bullets hits you in the chest with a force like a boxer's punch, but it's just a .22 round, and your vest absorbs it. Most of it, at least. You'll have a new, interesting bruise there tomorrow.Your gun clicks empty, and you duck behind the racecar to reload. Alex and Roxie are spreading out to either side. Alex fires her rifle with cool precision, taking out Yakuza with professional accuracy. Roxie is firing two pistols with wild abandon, shouting insults and sexual threats, not hitting much but scaring the shit out of them. The Yakuza fire back -- they don't have the accuracy or firepower of you and Alex, but they've got numbers on their side. You hear Alex grunt, and look over -- she's down on one knee, clutching at her ribs. When she sees you looking, she waves you off.To give yourself some cover while you reload the machine gun, you grab one of the two grenades from your belt. You pull the pin out with your teeth, lob it backwards over your shoulder, and count the seconds. Three, four, five -- BLAM. You risk a quick glance over the top of the car. Shit. Your grenade must have landed under one of their cars. A couple of the Yakuza are down and wounded, clutching at bloody legs and ankles, but not nearly as many as you hoped. Two of the street cars, instead of disgorging their occupants, instead roar back to life and peel out to either side. One of them swerves around in a huge drift turn, tires squealing. It comes out of the turn pointed straight towards you, and you hear the engine's intensity ramp up as the car accelerates at you.>Try to play matador and dodge, then shoot at them.>Try to dodge, then find a car of your own and fight car-to-car.>Drop a grenade at your feet, then dive out of the way.>Jump at the windshield feet-first.
>>1571757>Drop a grenade at your feet, then dive out of the way.

>>1571787oh thank god i thought i doomed us all
>>1571805fuck, really? i'm not 100% on how it works
>>1571757Your plan to pierce the car's windshield like a human javelin works. Sort of.You do leap over the hood of the onrushing car at the right moment -- or at least, almost the right moment. Not quite fast enough. The car's hood clips your lower legs. You strike the car's windscreen less like a javelin and more like a moose.Your world is a dizzy chaos of pain, glass, and angrily shouted Japanese as you tumble into the car. The passenger in the car starts punching at you and trying to wrestle you out of the way of the driver, who's frantically trying to keep the car under control despite the linebacker-sized man who just came crashing through his front window. You take a few solid blows to the face before shoving him off, grabbing his head, and slamming it into the passenger window. You reach past the passenger, pull the door handle, and give him a solid kick, booting him out of the moving car. He screams something, trying to grab onto the door frame, before falling. He bounces once before slamming into a concrete pillar. You turn to the driver, punching him in the face a few times with one hand while grabbing hold of the steering wheel with the other. You shove open the driver's door, which immediately slams into one of the parked racers and is forcibly ripped off its hinges with a squeal of metal. The car weaves and forth. You manage to shove the driver out of the car onto the hard concrete floor and gain control of the vehicle just in time to swerve away from a pillar and come to a stop. You spit out a piece of glass. Blood is dripping from your face. You take a moment to look at your face in the rear-view mirror. Ouch. Another few scars for the collection, then. Your leg feels like it's on fire where the car's hood struck you, but it still works. No matter. You've still got shit to do.You turn the car around and start driving back towards Alex and Roxie. As you pass the racers and the bloody skids their bounces left on the ground, you shout at them, "Should've worn your seatbelts, motherfuckers!"(Continued)
>>1571822The gunfight between Alex and Roxie and the Yakuza racers rages on. The girls are holding their own against the main body of troops, who are still hunkered down behind their wall of race cars. But the groups on both flanks are spreading out. The girls have barely got a few seconds left before they're flanked and in deep shit.Accelerating in the Yakuza racecar, you drive up to the scene and ...>Ram straight into the wall of cars.>Swerve to the side, take out one of the groups of flankers.>Stop to grab the loaded M60.>Pick up Roxie and Alex, then force your way out of here.
>>1571822I regret nothing about the choice we made.
>>1571836>>Ram straight into the wall of cars.
>>1571836>Swerve to the side, take out one of the groups of flankers.
>>1571836>Stop to grab the loaded M60, parking the car in position to be used as cover/firing support
>>1571836>>1571840>>1571838Just saying, this is why we kept the other grenade. Toss the grenade at one flanking group, suppressing fire on the other while Roxy & Alex make their way to us and then we drive off.

>>1571846Always bring two grenades. One to cover your assault, one to cover your retreat.Or even better, 10 grenades and fight at the other dudes place.Or best of all, find out where that high-class Whorehouse full of their blackmail secrets are kept and lets blow it up then burn it down. What with it being the Analogue Age and everything, we don't really *need* to know their blackmail secrets, just remove it from their hands.
Rolled 8 (1d10)>>1571857

>>1571863Nah, I vote for keeping it. A certain Cat can make use of it
>>1571859>>1571861Eh, good tactics mitigates bad rolls.Like we don't really need to even kill a lot of the dudes, just keep them suppressed while we GTFO.
>>1571836You skid sideways to a stop by where you left your M60, and kick open the door. "Alex! Roxie!" you shout, getting out of the car and pulling the pin on your second grenade. "Let's go!" You throw the grenade at the group of racers on the left. In the stress of the situation, your throw goes too low, bouncing and rolling. Goddamit. You used to be able to throw those things like baseballs back in Vietnam. The grenade goes off with a lot of smoke and noise and not much else. It didn't do any damage, but at least it gives you a few seconds of cover from the left flank. You grab the M60 with its fresh belt, prop it up on the car's hood, and begin the thunder, laying down suppressing fire on the group on the right. It forces them to keep their heads down, and gives Alex and Roxie the opportunity to sprint to the car.Alex opens the passenger door, pauses to raise her rifle and add some three-round bursts to your fire. She smashes the passenger window with the butt of her rifle, then climbs inside. Roxie throws open the backseat door and dives in headfirst. Alex keeps firing out the smashed passenger window, giving you the chance to throw the M60 in the backseat alongside Roxie and get in the driver's seat.Soundtrack: Carpenter Brut -- Paradise Warfarehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVf7NBncUy0You slam your foot down on the accelerator and twist the steering wheel. The tires squeal as the car rotates in place for a moment without moving before shooting forward. You deftly maneuver through the parked cars and aim at the weakest point in the wall of cars, the dead center."Hold on to something, girls!" you shout. The car rams the barricade with a crash of twisting metal, and you smash through and keep going. You just barely pull through the turn up to ground level and skid out onto the street, emerging from the drab grey of the parking garage into the bright neon lights and dark shadows of downtown Heat City at night. The wind whips at your hair and shirt sleeves through the empty doorway next to you, and the ashphalt is so close you could reach out and touch it. With a crunch, you sideswipe a parked car, before straightening out and taking off down the street. Palm trees and street lights flash by in a blur."Did we lose them?" Roxie asks, turning around in the backseat to look out the rear window just as a pair of cars come screeching out of the parking garage and speed after you. "We didn't lose them."Alex slams home a fresh magazine into her rifle. "Just drive straight, Johnny. I've got this.""No, wait!" urges Roxie. "Get alongside them! I can handle it!">Drive straight so Alex can shoot.>Slow down and get alongside them, like Roxie asks.>Try a fancy driving move.>Pull into someplace dark and hide.
>>1571894>>Drive straight so Alex can shoot.Maybe next time Roxie right now I want this to be quick
>>1571894>>Drive straight so Alex can shoot. When we need to fuck people up, we'll let Roxie handle it. Right now the goal is a Tactical Retreat, so the further away we engage them the better.Besides, none of them probably brought a sniper.
>>1571894>>Drive straight so Alex can shoot.Roxie plsSo adorable, but sorry, the rifle has less of a chance of turning you into a red smear.
>>1571894>Drive straight so Alex can shoot.
>>1571894"Maybe next time, Roxie," you call out, checking over your shoulder real quick. Those two Yakuza racecars are hot on your tail. You crank the steering wheel right and pull onto a long straight boulevard, filled with glittering signs advertising shops and cinemas. Civilian cars swerve out of your way. "Fuck them up, Alex!"Alex switches to a left-handed grip, putting the rifle stock against her left shoulder, so she can lean out the passenger window. She takes a few seconds to line it up, then fires a single shot. You glance in the rear-view mirror just in time to see a bloody spiderweb appear in the windshield of the car behind you, right where the driver's head would be. The car swerves, skids, and crashes head-on into a telephone pole."Woo!" shouts Roxie. "Fucking get 'em! You got this, Shades! You're the angel of fucking death! You're the fucking--""I'm trying to concentrate, you stupid bitch!" Alex screams. She switches to burst-fire mode and fires off two bursts. One bullet strikes something important in the engine, which erupts in a hiss of steam. Another hits and punctures a front tire, causing the car to slow and swerve."Nice!" Roxie says. "That should do it!""We're not out of the woods yet," Alex says, pulling back inside the car.The distinctive wail of police sirens reaches your ears only a few moments before red and blue lights flash in your mirrors. The inevitable specters haunting every criminal. Police cars.Alex is checking her magazines. "Shit. I'm out." She throws the assault rifle on the passenger's side floor and takes out her pistol. "How's the M60?""Almost empty," you say."Grenades?""Just had the two.""Fuck. What should we do, Johnny?">Roxie, can you handle this?>Find a dark alley to hide in.>Try a driving stunt.>Stop and fight.>Head for the edge of town.>Head for the docks and ditch the car in the water.

>>1571933You don't respond to Alex. You just tighten your grip on the steering wheel and press down harder on the accelerator. The needle climbs. The wind tears through the open doorway beside you. Civilian cars moving at normal speed whip past as though they were stationary, and the buildings become a blur. You weave through the traffic, every nerve on fire in concentration."Holy shit!" shouts Roxie. "This is fucking awesome! Go, Johnny!"A T-intersection is coming up, but you've lived in this city your whole life, and know its streets like the back of your hand. You're already set to pull the brake and crank the wheel. The g-forces tug at you as you turn, almost pulling you out of the empty space where your door should be. But this is a car tailor-made for pulling drift turns at incredible speeds through the city streets, and it handles like a dream. Even with its drivers-side door ripped off, which adds an extra element of pants-shitting terror to the whole thing as you come within inches of slamming yourself into a parked car. You swerve out of the way just in time, knocking over a mailbox. A cascade of mail envelopes spills everywhere, a few slowly fluttering through the air like white butterflies.Another wide, straight road awaits you, and you slam your foot down on the pedal. The car leaps away. You blast past shops and nightclubs, apartments and restaurants, all of it a blur of neon signage and concrete and fake plants.By the end of this stretch of road, the blue and red lights are distantly winking in your mirrors. You've got more than enough time to duck into a maze of side streets and lose them in the darkness.(Continued)
>>1571996You pull into a dark alley, switch off the lights, and turn off the car. Everyone gets out."Jesus," says Roxie. "That was a real fucking ride. Woo!" She shakes her bloodied hands. "I've got jitters. Is this what you guys do all the time?"You and Alex look at each other. "Pretty much," Alex says."It's getting normal for us," you admit. "That was a pretty good dust-up, though, and we got boxed in at the end there. I'm glad we all got out in one piece.""Yeah, that was a close one," agrees the gangster. The three of you recoil in shock. The Yakuza with a busted nose you were interrogating earlier is casually standing alongside you, his own blood staining his white collar."What the fuck?" you ask. "How did you get here?""You didn't see me?" he asks, puzzled. "How did you not realize I was back there?""We were a little distracted," you say."I climbed in the back seat alongside your tattooed friend there and just stayed the fuck down the whole time.""You just thought you'd hitch a fucking ride?" demands Roxie."Do you have any idea what Kojiro does to people who snitch, or who he even thinks might have snitched? It's not like the old days when you just lose a finger joint. I wasn't sticking around to try and explain myself to the brothers and just hope that they won't sell me out to him. It says something that my best chance of survival was jumping into a car with the guys who kicked the shit out of me and shot up my gang."You shake your head at the absurdity of the situation. Fishing in your shirt pocket, you take out your pack of cigarettes, only to realize it's got a bullet hole in it. You sigh. "Girls? Cigarettes?""Already told you, I forgot mine," Roxie says."Sorry," Alex says."Hold on a second," the Yakuza says. He checks his jacket pockets, then pulls out a pack of cigarettes and take one out. "H-here," he says, fighting his nerves to get close enough to hand it to you.Warily, you take the cigarette from the Yakuza and light it. "Thanks," you say."What are you going to do now?" he asks. You take a long, satisfying drag from your cigarette and exhale a cloud of smoke. "I've got an idea."(Continued)
>>1572009You slurp down the last of the ramen noodles in your bowl. "I have to admit," you say, putting down the bowl with a clack onto the bar, next to three other empty ones just like it. "You were right. This place is pretty good." You let out a noodle-flavored belch of satisfaction. The cook, a withered guy in his seventies, asks you something in Japanese. "Yes please," you say, handing him the bowl. "Keep them coming. Put it on my new friend here's tab. Small price to pay for his life, I'd say, treating some fine upstanding citizens like myself and the girls here to a good meal after a hard day's work""O-of course," the Yakuza says, warily picking up his own ramen bowl.Alex and Roxie have already getting into the drinks. Fast. "The thing about you, Shades," slurs Roxie. "The thing about you is you just -- you just gotta -- burp -- chill out, you know what I'm saying? Do you -- do you get it? Do you get what I'm -- what I'm saying?""Me? You think that -- that I'm the one who's gotta chill?" Alex slaps her hand on the counter. "You're the one who's -- who's always like -- weeew, I'm Roxie, I'm craaaazy!" She sticks her tongue out and makes a face.Roxie bursts into laughter. "Is that the face I make, Shades? C'mon, bitch, I'll get the next round, but you gotta tell me more about this mercenary stuff in Europe--""You have interesting friends," observes the gangster."That I do," you admit. "I'm not sure why they stick by me, but I'm glad they do. As for you, pal--">You better get out of town. >>1572052Raven and Ath are friends. Relax dude
>>1572019You raise a glass of beer, but stop before drinking it, looking at the amber liquid meditatively. "What are you going to do?" you ask the Yakuza."I'm not even sure," he says. "I'll have to get out of town tonight. Got enough money for a bus ticket and a hotel for a few nights. But I'm not sure where to go. Can't go to Japan, obviously. Syndicate'll find me there. None of the major cities on this coast. Maybe I'll go to Canada or Mexico something, hope for the best there."You roll your drink around, watching the liquid stay still as the glass moves. "There is one option.""Yeah?""You've probably heard some stuff about me. How I've sort of got my own little crew these days. We're doing pretty good. But we could use some help on the support side of things. I've got work for outsiders with ambition."Maybe this is a little weird, me saying this, seeing as my friend beat the shit out of you earlier. But you wouldn't be the first guy I added to the team after getting his face messed up," you say, thinking back to Nick on that boat. "And I'm the one who ended up giving him a cigarette, not the other way around. So that's already a point in your favor. Speaking of which--"The Yakuza takes out his pack, pulls out two cigarettes, and hands you one."See?" you say. "I like you already."The Yakuza lights his own cigarette. "So you're really offering me a job, huh?" He exhales smoke and wipes the sweat off his brow. "Do I have a choice about this?""Sure," you say. "You can leave town, if you want. Head for Canada or Mexico, hope the syndicate doesn't catch up to you. I won't stop you. You can also hang around and wait for Kojiro to chop your head off. Or throw yourself at the mercy of the Russians, see how forgiving they are.""I see your point," he says. "But can you really protect me?""I mean, I can't post a guard on your house twenty-four seven, kid," you say. "But no-one else is about to go to bat for you. And you've seen me and the girls at work. You know what we're capable of. You know we can fight. Throw in with us, and you'll actually have a chance."
>>1572056The gangster drums his fingers nervously, smoke drifting into the air from his lit cigarette. He takes a minute to think about it. Then he slaps the bar. "Fuck it. I'm in.""Hell yeah. This calls for a celebratory drink!" You wave the old man behind the counter over. "Sake, my good man! I'm already getting a taste for the stuff," you confide in your new friend. "I know this supposedly retired guy who keeps pushing it on me. I'll introduce you to him and the others at some point. For now, well, you already know I'm Johnny. The girl with the guns is Alex. The girl with the fists is Roxie, and she's--""Talkin' about us?" ask Roxie. She and Alex have weaved their way over. Roxie has her arm slung over Alex's shoulders, while Alex is looking critically at a near-empty bottle of liquor trying to see if there's any left. "New fella here wants a job," you say, slapping him on the back, almost knocking him off his chair. "Just thought I'd tell him about you two charming ladies.""Hah, get out! That's crazy!" Roxie slaps him on the back and actually knocks him off his chair. "Oh, shit. Sorry, dude." She grabs his arm and pulls him up to his feet. "I'm not sorry about the nose, though. You were trying to chop up Johnny, so as far as I'm concerned, you deserved it. Now where is -- oh, there it is." Roxie snatches the liquor bottle out of Alex's hand."Hey!" Alex grabs at the liquor bottle as Roxie starts to drain it. "Fucking bitch I wanted -- give me that -- fuck!" The two girls topple over, knocking over a table and set of chairs. The old man brings you your drinks. "Congratulations to your new job," you say, handing one to the new guy. "Hope you survive your stay.""Thanks," he says, accepting the drink as the two of you watch the girls scuffle and brawl on the floor.
