PURPS

It’s hard leading Mono downstairs, the very few fragments of consciousness you have are all suggesting different things. Kill her, hug her, warn her, grill her.

Your saw is fluctuating with every reconsideration, hell that alone is probably enough to set Mono’s bullshit meter off. “So, any reason I’m being hauled off?” She says defiantly as you cross the hallway.

“We need to talk to you.” You say simply, clenching your hands. It would be a lot easier interrogating someone you didn’t feel… vaguely motherly? Towards. Honestly, meeting Zelam probably fucked you up even more inside.

You can practically feel her eyes rolling behind your back as you both descend the stairs, descending from an atmosphere that weighed a tonne of awkwardness - to an atmosphere that is as chilly and suffocating as the Cadalonian Sea. Mono feels it too, “The fuck is this, Switch-”

“We need to ask you questions.” Verde interrupts. “Serious questions.”

“It would be best if you spoke to them, Mono.” Switchwick adds, avoiding the eyes of her pupil and everyone else in the room. Probably had words while you fetched her.

“Mono. I’ll make sure everyone is fair to you. But you have to level with us.” You counsel, putting a hand on her shoulder and guiding her towards the seat opposite Switchwick and Verde. The cups of tea have been refilled, a fourth cup poured for the young girl, the tension begins to rise and you let emotion wash away from you.

This is the time for emptiness and focus.

“Start out by telling us what you can do. Magically.” Purps begins, “Especially anything you haven’t told Switchwick.”

Immediately, Mono balks like she’s been asked to speak a different language. “I...actually have no idea what you’re talking about. What makes you think I can do anything not-Siren-like?”

“The recent phantom attacks,” you note primly. “There’s been some correlation between your activities and the last two appearances. We’re trying to figure things out, and if you cooperate with us, that’ll help a lot.” You had to admit, thinking about it, it was...almost silly. But silly tended to be accurate more often than not in your life- which you kinda hate admitting. “Disregarding physical appearances, there’s a timeframe that syncs up with certain actions of yourself- most recently several minutes ago.”

Mono is quiet for some time, and blinks slowly. “You...have got...to be kidding me.”

Oy.

“Look, Mono.” Purps chimes in, “Both times I’ve seen you praying, breezes have come from nowhere. You’re saying you’re totally magicless?

“I mean of course not! I’m a siren, we’re like big fuckin’ magical batteries. Asides from Gine sending a breeze, though, I can’t do shit.” She looks around, only you and Purps able to match her gaze. “Y-you’re being serious. Professor, no... I-I would never.” She stammers before falling silent.

Hm. Well, her words SEEM sincere, but...that doesn't mean a whole lot for you. With the way she's shaking, though...

PURPS

Verde puts that weird thing on the table slowly, touching buttons on it. “Tell us more about how you commune with your God.” She says whilst tinkering.

“W-well, Gine is God of travel, freedom and wind. He’s all about being yourself and going wherever your heart takes you.” Mono answers, a bit too quick and loud.

“It’s not illegal.” You offer, “Darna and Cadalon deities are the only illegal Gods.” A pause, “Mono, what were you praying for?”

“I-I’d rather not say.” She blushes.

“You should.” Your tone makes it clear this is not the time to be shy.

“To be away from everyone, out in the wilds. Secluded...s-safe and free.” You can see her hands shake as she reaches for the cup with her tea in it.

Verde lets out a low hum as she stares at her device, but otherwise says nothing as the girls eyes dart towards her for a second.
“Gine has some war in him. The whole “do whatever” thing sometimes makes great fighters.” You think aloud, “Look, Mono. This latest Phantom looks a hell of a lot like you. Just slightly more wolfish. Does Gine have any guardian spirits or anything?”

“No.” She answers simply, but she’s glancing off to the side. You’re not sure if anyone caught it since Verde is pushing buttons and Switchwick is looking ashamed, but… there’s something there.

Okay, so she’s got something. Let’s see if you can worm it out of her.

“Mono.” She looks up at you with wide eyes, “You looked like you thought of something else.”

“I… can’t really explain it.” She begins, fidgeting. Under the pressure of everyone in this room, the face painted wolf-like siren has regressed to looking like a scolded child, completely neutered from the fiery young woman you’re used to.

“You better try, because this is pretty serious. People have died, your sisters; so if you have anything. Any little shred of information or crazy idea that you think will prove your innocence or help us catch the fuck who did this - let us have it.”

Eventually she steels her gaze and looks up at you, “I’d have to get something from my room.”

“That would cancel the scan.” Verde says coldly while shaking her head. She doesn't even bother looking up- the tone is all that's needed to tell her thoughts on that. “The fact that it's taking this long is already a red flag.”

“Maybe it’s best to try and explain with words, Mono dear.” Switchwick says for the first time since this interrogation.

The girl puts her face in her hands and shakes her head slightly, radiating frustration. Actually, she looks more defeated than anything.

Pathfinder cancelled. Continuing to run.

“We can get it after the scan. How important is whatever it is?” You say, a tad more unkindly than Switchwick seems to like.

Mono takes a deep breath, trying to puff herself up. “You said it was a crazy theory. I have… an idea that will only make sense when I show it to you.”

“And what crazy idea might that be?” Verde asks while her thing… does a thing? Honestly it’s just kind of flashing and displaying colours now.

“Look. This thing was wolfen, like my costume. Did it have anything else specific? A mastery over the fog or unnaturally sure feet? Because I know how fucking crazy this will sound.” She begins, half rising only for you to put her back in the seat with some pressure on the shoulder.

“What are you getting at?” Verde asks putting her fist under her chin in what seems to be actual curiosity.

“Professor, this thing sounds like The Wolfman.” She blurts out, squirming under your grip slightly. “I mean I know -”

“The Wolfman is fictional.” Switchwick dismisses, “I understand the base similarities-”

“No, you fuckin’ don’t. You don’t see it.” Mono snaps, “If I had the fuckin’ book you could see.” She turns her eyes on you, “Purps. Please. It’s in my trunk.”

You know the play. A guy, stuck in his responsibilities and well. Magic happens one day from sheer frustration and he gets all these superpowers. But most importantly - the ability to turn into a wolf and command the fog. It’s kind of schlocky in the later acts.

“She can get it,” Verde suddenly says from out of nowhere. She's giving Mono a strange look, though you're unsure if you'd call it hostile. “Scan is finished.” You can see a familiar figure on the screen...Mono herself.

As she looks at Mono’s retreating form, her face bunches up in a very brief confusion. “Almost nothing but the basics. Name, vitals, specs- Siren Reality Warper, as expected- and no bounty. But that took forever for this thing. Two reasons why that's bad. One, it spout out an error. ‘Low level dimensional Interference.’ That just plain shouldn't happen. Reason why is number two…” and here she gets a scowl on her face. “Mana signature is already in the database.” Here she turns to you. “Remember that sword?”

“Unfortunately, I was very intimate with them.” You say matter of factly.

“It matches her mana signature.” Verde reveals setting the device down in front of Switchwick who stares at it as if she was just presented with a dead body.

Your hands move to your hips in search of something to do, settling for you simply staring your partner in the eyes. “No doubts about it?”

“Perfect match.” She says. “Like I said, there is some low level dimensional interference though. Which is extremely weird. Entirely plausible that it threw some readings out of whack and artificially reduced the margin of error via false positives. Nothing's perfect, not even this. Wonder how it futzed up exactly.”

“Which means it might not be Mono?” Switchwick says in desperation. But Verde shakes her head.

“I didn't say it was that inaccurate. Just weird. I've never heard of one being out and out wrong. As for the interference, maybe it’s your Gods or something?” She guesses while you hear Mono’s hurried footsteps heading downstairs.

“Alright, now I know this is crazy.” Mono says, completely ignoring the firing squad of eye contact, “Now let me just open to the first time Helvig transforms. And you’ll see what I’m talking about - it looks exactly like your description.”

She opens the pages and turns them towards you with doubt across her face.

Interesting. You have to admit aside from gender, that does look pretty identical. “Well, huh.” Verde seems somewhat unsure of what to say. “That opens up a couple of more possibilities than I really wish it did, I'd say.”

So there's someone who's using the power of Narrative combined with the reality-warping power of Sirens to commit these murders?
Maybe it's an inter-timeline traveler, which would explain the dimensional interference?

MIRANDA

Purps seems to sink into herself a bit, trying to work something out in her head. You’re more inclined to ask the possible culprit a couple of more questions as you give Mono a careful look- she’s very clearly confident that this is solid evidence of her innocence. Shame you’re going to have to break that idea of hers.

“Unfortunately, while this might lead to some theories, it doesn’t explain why your mana signature is already in the FutureSight- that’s this thing,” you quickly point at your device. “-from when we fended off the wolf being in the forest, or why they just so happen to show up when you’re praying. Pointing at a fictional character that happens to be real isn’t something that can absolve you of guilt.”
Mono looks like she just got hit in the gut- Switchwick, too, to a lesser extent. “But-but it’s right there!”

“And you could have summoned it,” you point out. “So it might exist, sure. In fact, considering my experiences, I’m more inclined to believe that than a lot of others likely would. The problem is, unless you can prove that you aren't doing this on purpose you *are* responsible for your sisters' deaths.”

Mono looks like she’s starting to hyperventilate- she’s only calmed down by Switchwick’s desperate soothing and Purps speaking up. “I wonder...maybe something’s abusing the Sirens’ reality warping? Some kind of traveler?” She turns to you. “Maybe that would explain your interference?”

You give it a minute’s thought. “It’s...eh. Unlikely, but plausible. I wouldn’t bet the house on that theory, personally.”

“Then how do I prove it!?” Mono’s near crying. “I swear, I SWEAR I didn’t kill them- I love all of them! I mean yeah, I know! I’m kinda snippy sometimes and I can be a real bitch; I’m sorry! But I DIDN’T DO IT.”

Hmmm… “So you have no clue why your sisters are getting killed, or how you- or possibly your Goddess- could be making this thing real?”

“NO!” She yells out, and you, Purps, and Switchwick all have to quickly shush her.

“Hmm...then what are this thing’s weaknesses?” You ask. “The way I see it, with our current information, we have three simple solutions to stop the murders.”

“And those would be?? Switchwick asks grimly.

>>
>>1563769
You begin to count off on your fingers. “In order, one: kill you.” Immediately Mono goes (somehow) stark white, and Switchwick’s eyes widen. You carry on nonetheless. “You may be the lynchpin to this, which means that your death might stop it cold. Thing is, my job is to protect you girls, so that option is off the table.” A sigh of relief from both parties.

“Option two,” you continue. “Kill the Wolfman for good. Classic, but difficult, and to be honest I’m not certain that’ll stop it myself, considering his prior ‘friends’ that showed up.” “Option three, there is reasonable suspicion of their involvement? Kill Gine.”

Immediately everyone at the table looks at you like you’re BATSHIT insane. You just shrug. “Wouldn’t be the first ‘god’ I’ve killed. You’d be surprised how many are just very long lived and very tough mortals with some good tricks and a superiority complex.”

“I...don’t think...that’s...happening.” Switchwick ventures hesitantly. “Perhaps we can draw the creature out somehow?”

“Maybe just keep an eye out at rehearsal tomorrow?” Purps says. “Who knows.”

“Why is it just me!?” Mono complains. “That wasn’t the first Phantom attack- you never went after anyone else like this, have ya!?”

“No, but I will.” The girl and Switchwick look at you curiously as you focus on Mono. “You’re being singled out because your mana signature is the only one that could be corroborated with weapons used by an attacker. But no, you’re not the only one. I’ll be scanning and recording the mana signatures of every single other person in this troupe, now. Just to be safe and certain that nothing is missed. The way she mutters makes you at least understand she’s going to go along with it, even if she doesn’t LIKE it.

PURPS

Mono is not looking herself, she’s pale faced and shivering under the weight of the implications here. But hell she is the most likely suspect. Who else could -

A mystery indeed.

A voice whispers in your ear, turning your stomach and making your hair stand on end you walk away to look out the window so Verde and Switchwick can’t see your face. There in the pane, stealing your reflection, is the stitched together face he wore during your last encounter; The Dealer.

A bargain perhaps, for a small little hint?

Price? It would be a kindness. For a hint, I will take that twisting chain of [WORRY] from you. Nothing as dire as when your predecessor sold me her magic.

You clench your hands, initially reluctant to deal with this creature or sacrifice a part of yourself so hard won. “Worry, for a hint. A hint you’ve given me no assurances of quality for.” You murmur, ignoring the room as if simply brooding.

I have no proof to offer. Only our past business. Snatching you from the jaws of death. Powering up your predecessor. My power is staggering and my wisdom just as much so.

He’s not wrong. You are kind of not dead and Laurelai was able to stand toe to toe with a viper for a short time before she was outclassed and outmuscled. For a housewife who had done nothing but sing and mother for decades… it certainly was an achievement.

There has been no downside to The Dealer thus far. He has taken only what is agreed and delivered exactly what is promised. Despite nobody having any idea what he is… he’s keeping you immortal and offering his aid.

“Go fuck yourself.” You growl at your reflection with all the hatred you can muster. Holding the gaze of your own stitched together self, it begins to fade into a standard reflection of a livid girl with purple hair.

“What was that?” Verde asks from behind you.

Shit. Too loud. “Nothing. I’ll take Mono up. Maybe do Pina next?” Not a bad proposal, you think; she was there during the first attack you were all a part of. Anything she could add would help massively.

“Sure, I’m done with her anyway.” Verde says simply. Just dismissing Mono without even looking at her? That cold detachment is probably so it’ll be easier for her to pull the trigger, should that time come.

You step to the side of the table and pull the chair out slightly. Mono rises silently, being led like a boneless fish. All the fight is out of the girl and once you’ve led her upstairs and through the corridor, she looks back at you once. Only once as the door closes behind her.

You never thought you’d see Mono crying, even if it’s angry tears.

“Well then, better deliver Pina for judgement.” A cynical part of your mind thinks as you knock on her room door.
After a solid minute, the redhead answers in a rather conservative nightgown, “Oh, is there anything I can do Purps?”

“We need to talk to you downstairs.” You say.

“Oh. Can’t it wait until morning?” She says sadly, she does kind of look half asleep still.

MIRANDA

Alright. That’s one questioned...personally, you’re still not entirely sure if she’s got a decent alibi, although her behavior was relatively congruent with people who were either innocent, or didn’t know they were guilty. You just hope that this whole thing questioning thing is on the right track- you’d hate to be wasting time.

Switchwick doesn’t particularly say anything as you both wait this time, and you take the opportunity to consider communicating with Sal. Might be prudent to get some potential insight on his take on the possibilities of what might be causing that interference- then again, as much as you might not want to admit it, you’re still a bit gunshy about risking talking to him again. It would help if he agreed, absolutely, but…

Ugh. You shake the thought out of your head. You’re fairly certain you can handle things as they are for now. You’re closer than before, you can tell that much. Have to be doing something right.

Purps seemed kind of distracted, too. Wonder if she’s having her own internal worries. Well, something to ask about later.

It’s not very long before you can see Purps and Pina, the latter looking...well, like she just woke up. Purps has a stone face, and Pina just eyes the table. “Am...I in trouble?”

“Depends on what you answer.” you remark. That seems to wake her up, and as she’s lead to the table, you think about what to lead off with.

PURPS

“Well first of all where were you twenty to thirty minutes ago.” Verde says matter of factly after pushing the buttons to start her scan. She looks almost like a predatory cat sitting there, totally unfazed even when Pina turns her dazzling smile back on.

“I was sleeping obviously.” She looks like she’s going to giggle, but she’s managing to keep a straight face.

“We can verify that with Jaqeline of course.” Switchwick says breathing a sigh of relief.

“Well… um Jaqeline is elsewhere.” Pina admits fidgeting.

“That’s suspicious.” Verde counters while Switchwick looks like her daughter just came home pregnant. That is another oddly specific thought for you; you should really write these down.

“I can confirm that.” You say with a raised hand. “She’s with Trisha.”

“Awfully convenient for her.” Verde says with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes it is. She plays her harp sometimes at night. Always sad songs too. I much prefer sharing a room with Velth.” Pina says blissful in her ignorance. You rub the bridge of your nose in exasperation.

“Could you walk us through the attack you experienced. Anything odd.” Verde asks, giving a stone faced glare that is met with rainbows and kittens. Honestly if Pina was a ice cold killer, you’re not sure you would be able to pierce that inscrutable mask of joy.

Well except when talk of sex comes up. Then she goes as red as her hair.

“Well, you asked us to rehearse and did magic stuff. I thought how nice it was to have people who would keep us safe from whoever was after us while you both went about your business.” She pauses. “Besides from it being my second time doing the song I didn’t feel particularly nervous; just - safe from something bad. But something far away? It’s hard to explain.”

You try to step in, having experience in trying to describe feeling to yourself, “You felt relieved? Sheltered maybe?”

“That’s the closest I can put to it.” She sighs, “Then… it was like I was watching from above; the music changed and then I was watching a play.”

“Wait you were watching it?” Verde says intently.

“Yes. When we were puppeteered into making The Wedding Scene from The Bride happen - it was just like I was sitting in Tinton Theatre.” Pina positively gushes, “No wonder we have you playing Juliard tomorrow Purps, you made a striking Bill! Male roles suit your stage presence.”

“Look. Pina. This is important, please try to calm down.” You shush her, before inspiration strikes you. “Odd subject, but who’s your favourite character?”

“Well. I’m torn between two; I love Dracul the first vampire. But, well I love The Bride because of Bill.” You share a pointed look at Verde, “He’s the villain yes, but he’s lost everything. The Bride betrayed him in his eyes, by faking her death and taking his unborn child into another’s arms. He was rule by his rage yes, but he also had to take revenge or else his underlings would see him as weak and launch a coup.” She hit the table, “BUT he was also merciful! His love was so much he managed to save the baby and promise his love that he’d raise it right! He managed to temper the inferno with fire and shield his son!”

“Okay Pina dear. We get it, sit still so the scan can work.” Switchwick interjects gently, looking somewhat stunned by the enthusiasm, “And what of Dracul?”

“Well. He’s the original Cursed Hero. He vows to never leave his wife’s grave and is given immortality.” She shudders, “He accepts, believing he must suffer eternally for his failure, for being at war when she was sick.”

“And then?”

“He suffers. He loses control of himself, for even as he spends an hour every night mourning - he must take lives from others. His atonement is to be ruled by the blood.”

You can definitely see some rather unsubtle parallels to the girl’s own situation. But her… extremely forthcoming and rapid testimony has given you much to mull over.

> Any other questions?

I got to sleep. Job interview Tomorrow Handler will be with you soon.

So let me get this straight...
Every siren...
Had a phantom...
associated with each individual siren?

We are done here I think.
I'd hit up Alice now.
Time is of the essence.
>>
>>1567953
Slow down there buddy. We've only interviewed two people so far. At the very least I'd like a third to make sure that's actually plausible.
>>
>>1568024

Well...
Just look at the past examples.
We also got an Awoo with our Awoo.
If you check past threads, you will realize how each phantom has an associated in one way or antoher with each siren.

That being said, with Alice being FUKKEN STRONK and one of the first ones to having witnessed the phantoms...
The best choice would be talking to them, no?

“Have you or the troupe received any gifts from fans recently, or collected anything like a statue or bauble before Billie died?” strange artifacts was a common cause of things like this in your experience, and if someone had managed to get some sort of strange statue or other figure, that could be a dead giveaway.

Sadly, she shakes her head. “We don't exactly get a lot of visitors, remember? There's not a whole lot that we can really get for ourselves. It's a shame really, I've heard there's some wonderful things out there… although with how things have gone so far, I think I'd be satisfied with just getting something and maybe never actually going out again. The outside world is scarier than I remember…” she shivers at that, and you let out an inward sigh.

“That's about all I can think to ask her. I think we're done here if you don't have anything to say, Purps?” You turn to the girl in question, and she shakes her head in the negative. “Then you can get back to bed. Sorry for disturbing you.”

As she heads back up the stairs, Purps turns to you. “Now what?”

>We get some sleep and keep an eye on them tomorrow.

>We get another one down here. (Who?)

“Now we get Alice,” you decide. “And we see what she has to say.”

The girl in question is roused in a manner similar to the first unlucky participant, and she actually has the nerve to fix you with a small frown as she marches down the stairs with your partner at her back “May I asked exactly what is this for? We've got a busy day tomorrow, and I wasn't exactly told why you would be waking me up in the middle of the night.”

“Hopefully, you won't be up for very long,” you assure. “I just need to ask you a few questions. In particular about recent events revolving around the deaths of your sisters.”

She at the very least seems to sober up a bit at that. “O-oh. That would be a good reason, yes.” She takes a deep breath as she sits down. “Alright, then. I suppose I'm an open book. What do you want to know?”

I want her to talk about EVERY encounter with The Phantom. Each one she knows about.
She has seen at least 3 by now.
The one BEFORE Billie, especially.
