"This drive is taking forever" is all you can think as the sun sets behind the treeline. Looking out the window you can see a mountain range peaking over the trees. The woods all around the quiet road sure are different from the usual hustle and bustle back up North.

It was really nice of your great uncle to let you stay with him while your parent's worked out the divorce. The two of you haven't talked much all drive. He has been content to listen to his jazz collection and you aren't sure this oldsmobile has a working radio.

You're starting to hope he didn't leave his glasses off when looking at a map earlier. His place may be on the other side of the state, but it isn't like he is in a different one and traffic wasn't even bad on the highway.

A sign reading "Entering Birchland" is the last thing you see before the car enters a tunnel through a hill. With only faint lighting there isn't much to see, so you close your eyes to relax them. But when you open them you aren't sitting in the car anymore.

What you see before you feels familiar. Like you dreamed of it before, but couldn't remember it until now.

>Standing on a hillside overlooking an unknown city engulfed in flames. You need something in there.
>In the middle of a hallway filled with the same blank mask, you can't see an end in either direction
>An underground tomb. Your phone is the only source of light and you can't see a way back, only deeper in.

You reach out to find a wall and are met with cold stone. It is better than nothing and you continue further in. Keeping your phone forward lets you see the hallway ahead of you.

After a few minutes of carefully walking you come to a large chamber, at least you think because your light doesn't reach all the way across. Following the wall, you come across a statue. It looks like a man in some kind of old outfit made of stone. There is writing underneath them like a plaque, but you have no clue what it says.

The statue must be pretty old, it is just raw stone. As you inspect it your eyes catch another statue, this time made of marble you think. This one you feel like you have seen before. As you walk over to inspect it closer you see another statue.

You think you understand what is going on and walk along in a line, finding statue after statue made of various materials. Eventually though you come to an empty spot, but the room doesn't end.

Before you get a chance to read the plaque everything starts to shake and world around you goes white.

When your vision clears you are back in the car, your great uncle pulls a hand away from your shoulder as he starts to brake."Need you to wake up, I can't carry you inside with these old bones."

The oldsmobile pulls behind a church to a quiet looking one story home as you finish waking up. Looks like you missed the drive through town, but from a quick glance it looks like a suburban place.

Once the car is parked your great uncle slowly gets out, now might be the time to finally speak up.

>Thanks for the ride, so this is where you live?

You hop out and move to the back to grab your bags "So this is it huh? It's a real nice place."

"Why thank you, I helped build this place in my time as a carpenter in my youth. It may not be as fancy as modern homes, but it has everything a person needs."

You set out your suitcases and bag so they can be taken inside together "I fucking love Jazz gramps, you have any other CDs?"

His eyes widen as you speak, but he soon smiles back at you as he holds the door open"Ah well I have a few mixes. Glad to see we have something in common."

Leaving your bike against the house for now. The first room looks like a typical living room, old sofa and TV. You can make out a kitchen right across from the front door and a hallway to the side.

"I'd give you a tour, but first thing is to get your stuff put away. Your room is first on the right and the bathroom is the center door. Now just say if you need any help, I'm gonna get dinner ready" your great uncle says as he slips past you to the kitchen.

The hallway is a little tight, but its no problem getting to your room. The room is pretty bare with just a bed, nightstand, dresser, but it will do. Unpacking isn't the worst, but you wish you could have brought more of your stuff. Luckily you have were able to get your...

Once you have the record safely packed away, you head over to the kitchen to check on things. Your Great Uncle Carson seems pretty relaxed so far. His home doesn't even over do the religious angle, a simple cross over the dining table is the only hint at his priesthood.

The warm colors of the kitchen and the smell of brisket really remind you of your childhood before the fights started. You are snapped out of the memories by a question.

"So are you ready for school tomorrow? I know it can be a rush to just move here and have the school year the next day."

Oh right, you start junior year tomorrow. Most of your classes were set up, but you remember you had a meeting with your counselor tomorrow. Miss Foster, she seemed nice over the phone.

You are snapped out of your thoughts again as a plate of brisket and greens are set in front of you, wow he set the table fast. "Feeling alright? You seem to be spacing out, might be a good idea to hit the hay early."

He sits across from you and says a quick grace before starting to eat. You join in and the food is pretty good, is there anything to mention during dinner?

"I'm nervous about classes. I mean I'll be the new guy coming in after everyone else has had two years to get to know each other or more." You explain between bites.

"Oh I wouldn't worry about it, people come and go all the time. And from what I remember during charity drives the students at East Ridge are nice."

Well that is reassuring to hear. But you need a life out of school. "So what else is there in town? I can't only go out to school."

Carson thinks for a moment and takes a sip of water "Well I keep myself busy, but I hear a new strip mall opened up over the summer. You could also look for a part time job, but you should see if you handle your classes before that."

"Speaking of staying busy, you were a carpenter?"

"Ah yes, I was a handy man in my youth. Helping build homes, cooking for the poor, I even went on a mission trip to Africa a few years ago."

You give a stretch as he talks, having finished your meal. "I'm not really tired, but the bed in my room is good to use right?"

Carson chuckles as he takes up the dirty dishes, seems he finished his meal too. "Yes I had everything all set up before I went to pick you up. I made the brisket last night so it could marinate. And don't worry, I have the dished taken care of."

Looks like it got dark out during dinner, that doesn't leave you much to do.

You join him at the sink, dunking your hands in the soapy water. "I'm staying here with you, might as well help out."

"Thank you, I appreciate the help. So was there anything else you wanted to talk about while we take care of this?"

"This town has its own highschool, right? That means there are plenty of teens?"

"Oh yes plenty, I think other towns send students our way too if they live on the edge since we are in the middle of the county. Oh, done already. Four hands are better than two."

Carson dries his hands first and starts down the hall "Now if you need me, just knock on the first door on the left."

A quick nod is all you have time to give before he vanishes. With not much else to do you take a seat on the sofa, sinking in a few inches, and turn on the TV.

You spend the evening flipping through the channels. News, sports, movies, cartoons, there is some decent stuff. You catch a news report about some protest for animal rights and a sports replay of some local player getting a nasty injury.

Eventually though you shuffle to your new room, change into your sleep wear, and pass out. And then you wake up in another weird place.

Taking a moment to look around and sit up on the bench you are on, it looks like you are in an observatory or library. You nearly jump out of your skin as a smooth voice catches your attention. "Helloooo"

You aren't sure how you missed him, but there is a strange man in a suit sitting at a desk. A girl with almost white hair and blue gown reading a book next to him. "Welcome visitor to the Velvet Room. I am your host, Igor."

"This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter. Your being here means your destiny is an interesting one. Do you know the constellations? I'd like you to use this telescope here and tell me the first one you see, but first I will need you to sign this."

Igor motions to a blank spot on his desk. The girl looks up from her book and quickly places a sheet of paper in the indicated spot. As you approach to get a better look it seems to be a contract.

The print is small so you have to squint, but it generally is talking about taking the destiny given to you or whatever that means. You aren't sure you have much of a choice in this as Igor hands over a pen.

You sign, James Baker, and Igor takes up the contract "Well pleasure to meet you, James" You feel a chill down your spine when he says your name.

"Now my assistant, Abigail shall help you up to the telescope. She will record the result and make explain it further."

Abigail stands up rather abruptly, clinging a book to her chest. "Yes, now follow me please!"

She leads you over to the telescope and lets you go up the stairs first "Just take a look and describe the shape the stars make, you'll know what I mean."

You notice her relax out of the corner of your eye as you lean in to look. The sky is pitch black for a second, before stars start to fade in. Then lines between the stars, connecting themselves.

Once the lines are done a shape starts to form over the stars "Uhh, I think it is a man carrying a bag on a stick with a weird smile on his face? What kind o-" Your question is cut off by Abigail

"He have found the Fool in the stars Master Igor!" she yells down as you are jerked off the telescope, man she didn't look that strong.

You are led back to the desk, where Abigail goes back to her seat and reading. "Well you have found your Arcana to be the Fool, which means your future is yours to take as your own as others have." Igor explains

"Now we don't have much time, I apologize. I shall contact you again shortly."

Before you have a chance to speak, you wake up, the sun in your eyes. You look over at your clock, 7:45 A.M, you have 45 minutes before school starts. After a few minutes you are dressed and your bag packed. The good thing about just moving in is all your papers haven't had a chance to be lost yet.

Once out of your room you smell toast. "Good morning James! I already got breakfast ready for your first day." Carson calls out

You set you bag and take a seat at the table. Looks like he fixed a plate of toast and bacon for each of you. "Thanks for making breakfast, do you think I could get a ride?"

Carson walks over and takes a seat across from you to start eating too. "Well I should be able to give you a ride today, but you in the future you will have to take the bus or ride your bike. It is only a 10 minute drive from here."

The two of you have a rather quiet breakfast, Carson stacks the plates when you both finish. "I'll do those later, for now lets make sure you aren't late."

Into the Oldsmobile you two go and he pulls out, you notice a few cars parked at the church this morning. Early morning jazz helps calm your nerves about the new school. It really is a just a short way down the road, the neighborhoods and trees filling the landscape to the side.

The front of the school is quiet, it looks like most people park in the parking lot or take the bus. "Have a blessed day James."

You wave back and grab your bag before walking to the front door. Its locked. You look at a small device and it looks like some kind of card reader. Well now you have to go around, great. Good thing you got here early.

"Hey you need some help?" ask a feminine voice from behind, causing you to turn.

A bored looking girl about your age is standing there in a jacket with and a card in her hand. She puts the card out and you hear a click, the door unlocking.

"No I'm new here. The names James, yours?"

The girl takes out her phone for a second before slipping it back into her jacket "I'm Zoey. Have a good time at East Ridge."

She starts to turn away, but you need to know one more thing "Hold on, could you tell me where the counselor's office is? I'm looking for Miss Foster."

"Huh, same year. Anyways just take a door on either side and loop around to the other side of the front office over there" she says while pointing behind her.

Zoey turns away again and walks off down the hall "Now if you need anything else, just go ask them."

You might as well get the meeting over with now, so you follow the directions. Luckily that Zoey girl wasn't messing with you. You walk into a small lobby, an older woman sitting behind a counter.

"Who are you here to see young man?" she ask, her southern drawl making you slightly self conscious if you have one.

"I'm here to see Miss Foster, I'm James Baker."

The older woman makes a quick phone call and points down a hall to the right of the lobby. Following, you almost bump into a very professionally dressed woman with a cup of coffee in her hand "Good morning James, follow me to my office for our meeting."

Its only a few steps and you are in. She directs you to a seat as she gets behind her desk. The room is covered in various older looking students' photos with them smiling in front of colleges.

"I know we set up most of your classes over the phone, but we there is one more spot in your schedule you need to fill. Sadly because we are late doing this you only have two options. You can either take Wood Shop, which is always popular and filled so they won't mind one more student."

"Can you tell me more about the classes and the teachers?" You ask, as she takes a sip

"Oh alright, both will be equally weighed to your end of the year credits as elective classes. Wood Shop will be hands on work with making crafts and learning proper safety. From my sitting in the class is mostly student ran, Mr. Sanders prefers a hands off approach."

"Photography is for learning how to take and develop high quality photos. You would be provided one by the school for projects and such. The teacher, Mr.G, has a strong passion which scares off some students." She pauses to adjust her glasses

"However they are both fully qualified teachers and good at their work. But I wouldn't expect Sanders to give you help out of class with a project. One of the students has basically take up the role of teacher assistant all three other years she has been here. A miss Erica Underwoord."

You nod as the information sinks in. "Do I have to decide right now?"

"I'll sign up for photography. Should give me more of a reason to go see the sights in town." You say, which leads Miss Foster to type something into her computer.

"Ok, class number is 901. If Mr.G says you aren't in his class just tell him to call me up."

With the decision made, you only have 5 or so minutes before class starts. You give give Miss Foster your thanks and hurry off. Good thing you noticed they painted arrows on the walls here to help find class numbers. Your first class is history, which you manage to find right before the bell.

You notice a desk is labeled for you and the rest are labeled too, all in alphabetical order. Soon enough the class fills up and teacher teacher starts talking about what the class objectives. You don't really learn much as they just pass papers to get signed.

After just an hour of talking about goals and reading over papers it's time for your next class English. Which repeats almost the same thing as the woman in teaching it uses example after example of books and other essays students wrote.

Then it is the same in Science, the man at least used a powerpoint with images to try and have fun. As you head to math you can't shake the feeling of being watched. Thinking about it you have been feeling that way since you first left history.

You notice on your schedule that math is half an hour longer than the other classes, but that is explained by teacher, though you can barely hear the old man from your seat. "Because this is a lunch block we... three different lunches and... last lunch."

With half an hour of class left everyone else gets up and leaves class. You generally understand and follow the herd of people to the cafeteria. Then you realize you have no lunch and no lunch money. As you are thinking of how to solve this there is a tap on your shoulder.

A guy a little shorter than you with glasses has a confused look on his face "Hey man, you alright? I noticed you just kinda stopped walking there."

You can't shake the feeling you have seen him before.

Your mind goes to work trying to recall where the you know this person from. Then it clicks, you weren't being watched. The two of you have just had every class together so far. You remember his name from history too.

"Oh hey, we haven't actually had a chance to talk. Name's James by the way." You sign internally at the close call there.

"Martin, we introduced our names in English" Shit.

"Well you I'm new here and my old school did things different, so I don't really have any money or my own lunch to eat." You confess, scratching the back of your neck

"No worries dude, if you tell the lunch ladies that they can give you a free sandwich and here."

Martin holds up a lunch bag and takes out a small bag of cool ranch chips. "I don't actually like them, but my mom keeps buying them."

You take the chips from him with a smile "Thanks Martin, I'm gonna grab a sandwich too."

He smiles back and looks around, the lunch line thinning "So what other classes do you have? I've got PE, Programming, then early release."

"I've got PE, Photography, and Study Hall. So you just leave early?" You ask as you get in line

Seems like Martin has nothing better to do as he follows "Well I have Study Hall technically, but I hear some teachers let people leave early if they get a form signed."

The two of you chat as the line carries on. Martin seems to be big into computers and science fiction stuff. Just like Martin said, you explain the situation to the lunch lady and you get wrapped PB&J sandwich.

When the two of you exit a huge guy bumps into Martin, making him drop his bag. Before either of you can pick it up another guy steps on it and turns to Martin "Watch it loser."

The pair just keeping walking as Martin picks up his bag, the food in it probably squished "What the fuck? Dude did you see that?"

"Is that normal around here? It feels like something from a TV show."

Martin checks his bag and sighs "No, I don't know what that was about. I mean sure we don't get along, but Joe hasn't ever done something like that."

"Well let's go after them. We can't just let them get away with it." You say, running after those guys.

Martin follows after, but he is obviously nervous. The two bigger guys turn to you, glaring down at you. "So what do you want? You better not think Adam and I will let you just run up to us for nothing."

Normally you may not be able to stand up to something like this, but its the middle of school. Your GUTS swell as you match their eyes with your own. "See I'm new here, so I don't care about your reputation. Just give him an apology before we make some mistakes."

The two share a chuckle and break off the glares "Yeah fine whatever, sorry we stepped on your lunch, nerd. Later."

Martin puts a hand on your shoulder as the jerks walk off "Thanks anyways man. You stood up to some of the biggest guys on the varsity football team."

"No problem, but your lunch.."

"It's just a sandwich and some jerky. Not like it can be ruined too much. We still have some time left, wanna go to my secret lunch spot? Nobody will mess with us there."

"Sure, I'm starving. What is this spot though?" You ask as Martin leads the way down the hall more.

Martin opens up a pair of double doors, leading to what looks like a stage with the curtains down. "Trust me dude, this spot is has a great view."

Maybe your curiosity is getting the better of you, but you follow across the stage to a ladder. Martin starts to climb up and motions for you to follow "Come on, we are eating lunch on the catwalk."

The climb is a little worrying, you are maybe twenty or thirty feet up. But there is a safety cage so you should be fine if you slip. Once up top you stand on the grating and can see the whole auditorium from here.

Your stomach however, demands attention. Martin opens up his lunch bag and the two of you start to enjoy a meal. "So you are new here right? Where are you from?"

"Upstate, not near the border t-" you cut yourself off as you hear the sound of one of the backstage doors closing.

You can see the reflection of how wide your eyes are in Martin's glasses. He starts to pack his half finished lunch up and whispers over to you "If we get caught up here its big trouble! But nobody should be back here, the staff should be teaching or having lunch."

You need a plan, fast.

You lock eyes with Martin as you takes another bite of your sandwich. He seems to understand as takes his back out and starts to eat again.

In your mostly silent eating you can hear a voice from below mumbling "Yes, this is the perfect place for it..."

When you turn to try look past the railing, you hear the sound of the backstage doors closing, they must be gone. Martin lays back as puts the rest of his food away. "I'm too stressed to eat, you?"

"I finished while we were being quiet, but we should probably get ready for next class. We had PE next?"

Martin groans and the two of you climb down. Carefully you go back into the hallways and to the cafeteria, which is connected to the auditorium and gym it looks like.

All the tables are full, which leaves you two awkwardly standing there for a minute until the bell rings. Getting to gym is easy enough, and it looks like each grade level has a class in here at once.

Gym flies by as luckily you just get assigned lockers and pickup gym uniforms. The less thoughts put on the locker room's cleanliness the better.

Photography is next, which takes you to the opposite side of the school and no time to talk with Martin. As you enter the room the lights are all out and only a about nine or so other kids are in the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen! I shall be your guide to the world of photography! I see we have no returning faces, again. No matter. Take these syllabus and have your parent's sign them! Everything you need is covered on there." announces someone from what looks like a booth in the room.

"Where are they? I don't see any." Complains a young looking kid with an unfortunate amount of acne.

The booth opens and out walks a man with a painful face, holding the papers.

You take a paper from the teacher as he manually passes them out "Are you ok?"

Mr.G sighs as she continues to pass out papers to the other students "Yes, yes. I was sad I ruined my own introduction."

The other students are reading over the syllabus at their own pace as Mr.G walks over to you "Now I have everyone else's names, but what is yours?"

"I'm James Baker. I'm a new student and am looking forward to being here. Also nice to meet you."

"THAT James, yes its nice to meet you too." He says giving you a rather firm handshake.

After the handshake he stands up and walks to the front of the class. "Now before any questions, just call me G. And no I won't say what the G stands for."

The rest of the class dissolves into a somewhat typical explanation of the goals and expectations and soon enough its your last class of the day.

You head down to the first floor of the building and go into the class room. You notice everyone seems to be on their phones, chatting, and the teacher is sleeping? Martin waves over and takes some earbuds out.

"Hey man, we really lucked out! It turns out this class is just a teacher fresh out of college and some old lady that hardly pays attention."

"So you gonna try for that early release thing?" you ask as he leans back at the desk

"Yeah I am, maybe you can get one from the office too."

When the bell rings you another teacher walks in, but she looks hardly older than some of the students. "Okay everyone, I'm Ms.Brown and Mrs.Young is my senior."

Nobody is really paying attention, but she keeps talking. "Now I am busy grading during this period and Ms.Young is busy catching up from teaching night classes, so there will be NO early release here."

A few students complain, but Martin is the most annoyed from the looks of it. Ms Brown continues though "If anyone needs anything make sure to ask Mrs.Young, I will be busy. Good day."

Then she just leaves and the class continues. Martin is grumbling under his breath "I'm gonna go talk to her about this..."

"Just relax man. You can do what you want, but keep a cool head. Don't wanna piss off the teacher's in control of if you leave early, right?"

Martin uncrosses his arms and slouches forward "You're right, I was just really hoping to get out early. Thanks. Wait hold on, she didn't say where she was going did she?"

That is a good point. Martin is going to have to go fast to find her. He realizes this too as he hops out of his desk and runs out the room, grabbing the bathroom pass to go after her.

In the meanwhile you think back over the day, besides the scuffle around lunch the day has gone pretty well. Looking around the classroom you notice everyone else seems to have formed groups to talk in and Mrs.Young is up and reading some novel.

The groups look to be a trio of people playing video games, some girls doing their hair, and a group listening to their music loudly. After a few minutes of looking around and thinking of what to do you...

Martin should probably be back by now. It's been like 10 minutes so he probably is still looking for her. When nobody is paying attention to you, which is really right as you thought of the idea, you casually walk out and grab the girl's bathroom pass. It looks close enough to the guy's.

Now you need some idea of where they went. You walk out into the main hall to get better idea of where stuff are "OH SHII-!"

That was Martin's voice coming from the auditorium! With a surge of adrenaline you throw open the backstage door and run inside.

You scan the empty stage as fast as you can and move on to the main auditorium, the backstage, orchestra pit, catwalk, rows upon rows of chairs. Wait something is in the pit in front of the stage!

You look over the edge and see the boy's bathroom pass, but no Martin. That was for sure his voice, and he wouldn't just leave that down there.

Hopping down you pick up the pass and look it over, nothing is wrong with it. Maybe he threw it or something? There has to be something going on here.

People in drama always rig their stage to have weird stuff, right? You climb the stairs and get on your hands and knees to get right next to the boards. Nothing.

You take a look above to see if he was hanged by a sandbag and still nothing. Wait maybe that weird voice did something! You go to the part of backstage you heard them from and find another door.

Opening it up you find yourself visually assaulted by a massive collection of colorful costumes. This must be where the drama department keeps their costumes for shows.

After a quick look around there isn't a sign of Martin or anything out of place. That just leaves the catwalk. A short climb up assures you Martin wasn't trapped up there or anything.

You're almost tempted to just call out his name like this was some kind of prank when you look down and notice a crack. Not in the catwalk or the auditorium, but in the air.

It's just sitting there, glowing faintly. How did it get there? And what the hell are you doing?

Ok, you are awake for real. You can't just go into weird stuff like in your recent dreams. The crack is maybe a foot down from the catwalk, so you really hope this works and undo your belt.

Slowly you lower the belt into the crack with one hand as you keep your pants up with the other. There is no noise, the belt just vanishes into the bright light in the middle of the air. Then pull on it.

But you can't pull it out, you are actually loosing your grip on the belt! Nothing is pulling on it, its almost like gravity is just dragging it down and you with it.

As you the belt is tugged free of your hand, you gulp. At least you don't fall through. Taking a second to focus you are pretty sure this won't kill you. So you jump in.

Everything goes green as you as you feel like you are falling for a minute, but eventually everything becomes clear.

You look behind, above, under, you. The crack is gone and just dumped you in the middle of a jungle. Well maybe you hit your head and this is a dream, you aren't sure which would be worse.

This camp has a just one torn up camp and what look to be pieces of paper surrounding it. You carefully stand up and walk around, taking in the scenery. Luckily this camp is in some kind of clearing so you can see the green sky.

Well your dreams would have the sky be blue, so you are awake. You catch a glimmer on the ground, looking close you see Martin's phone.

You scramble over to it, Martin is here which means he is alive! But for how long? Who knows what lives here?

Then you hear a click and someone speak right behind. Turning your head you are face to barrel of some masked figure's gun.

You're this close to panicking, but there is a gun to your head. One wrong move and you could die, that it. All over.

You take a few deep breaths, looking past the handgun at the person holding it to you. They look like some kind of doctor from history.

After a few seconds of hyperventilation you managed to form words "I was looking for my friend who went missing in school. Then I found this crack and thought they might be in here."

The masked figure lowers the gun and helps you stand up, you aren't really comfortable with the whole thing though. "I'm sorry for scaring you like that, but this place isn't safe for kids."

"But I need to find my friend Martin! He's dark skin, glasses, kinda short, wears a beanie even though its against school rules."

"It is impossible someone else came here, I keep an eye at almost all times." They state matter of factually. tucking the gun away.

You hold up his phone and your own as proof "Well explain this then."

The figure is silent for a moment "You will just come back in if I make you leave won't you?"

"Yes, I'm not leaving without my friend."

The figure lets out a crackle of static ---Is that a sigh?--- and points to the tent. "Stay in there and keep quiet. If you have to use the bathroom just don't leave the paper circle or you will be killed."

"I will come back with your friend, then you will both leave and never talk about this to anyone else or come back, got it?"

"Hold on, none of this explains what you are doing here." You ask, digging your feet in

"That isn't a concern for you, now just stay here."

You'll just grab them down by tagging along, best to just stay safe. "Fine, I'll stay. But is the wildlife really that dangerous?"

The figure start to prep that pistol of his again before responding "Yes. You will be killed in a matter of seconds if one of them finds you out of the circle."

"Say if they are so dangerous you wouldn't happen to have an-"

The figure cuts you off before you even finish "No I'm not giving you a gun, now stay here."

With them walking off all that's left to do is look around camp more. The tent has a few bottled water and packaged snacks inside. You could take a few of those if you got hungry you suppose.

The rest of the campsite is pretty barren. You flip over a few rocks and look around, it is difficult with one hand having to hold your pants up though.

Once you've searched everywhere you just sit on a rock and look across the sky, at least the clouds are normal. The trees don't look that weird either, but what is the glimmer in that one up on a hill a few minutes away?

Your belt! How the did it get all the way over there? That is when you notice what looks like a small person grab it out of the tree with a spear. Another person, maybe they know where Martin is.

You try waving, taking flash pictures with your phone, doing weird dance moves. But the figure doesn't seem to be paying any mind to you.

There is one big tree that has a piece of paper on it, climbing it should still count as being inside. The branches are pretty big and easily support your weight as you climb.

Once you are on top a few things are apparent to you. One, this jungle is huge.

Two, the entire jungle is surrounded by massive stone walls. You aren't sure if you can even see the top of the walls.

Three, you oddly aren't out of breath. You would have thought climbing up so high would leave you winded.

You can get a clearer view of the figure now, while still a few minutes away you start taking pictures and waving your not clinging to the tree hand at it.

It looks up at you and starts to run your direction. Weirdly it seemed to have tons of wooden armor, but you could swear the skin wasn't just dark, but pitch black.

You climb back down to meet the figure who had closed the few minutes walk in just a few seconds. They stand at the edge of the paper circle, looking right at you.

Turns out you were seeing things, you can't even see any skin on them. Must have just been a shadow. The figure sets their spear down, you notice your belt is tucked into it's weird eye belt.

You point a finger back at yourself and break the silence "I'm James Baker, nice to meet you."

The figure stares at you. Their body moving as if they were breathing heavily, but with no noise.

"So how did you get here? I came through a crack in the air."

It finally breaks eye contact with you and stares at the paper on the tree next to you. It hefts the spear and points it at the tree.

The figure's mouth opens as it lets out a bestial roar, like an ape or lion, and it starts to whack the tree with the spear. It doesn't seem to be doing any damage though.

At this point you are fairly sure it has something to do with the paper, but that is suppose to keep wild life out.

"Knock it off! Come on you need to stop!" You try to yell over the sound of the spear hitting the tree over and over, but they just don't understand you.

They can't just keep hitting the tree, it might draw some of the dangerous wildlife here. If words won't work you go for the one thing you know everyone likes.

Running over to the tent you grab a hand full of snack cakes drop them in front of the figure. The figure stops and bends down inspecting the snacks.

After squishing one in their hand, they rip they other two open, and stuff the wrappers in band of their belt.

With their belt stuffed they pick up the spear again and run off into the treeline. Now you still don't have your belt, know where Martin is, and lost some food.

As you go to sit down again you hear a commotion from the direction the tiki like figure ran off. Then a gunshot. You run back over to the edge and see the masked figure struggling to keep the tiki figure away. The Masked figure is firing shot after shot into the Tiki figure, but the bullets are failing to stop them much.

Masked gets a lucky break when the spear gets stuck in a tree, just barely missing their ribs. Tiki smacks Masked away and struggled to pull their spear out.

You notice the Masked figure is leaving a trail of blood as they crawl to you and the circle. "Kid, stay back" they wheeze.

You won't just leave them out, even if it means you have to leave the circle. Despite the protest of Masked you rush out and grab them by the arms to pull them back in. "Stop, get back in right now J-"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpDvtIt6Lsc

They are cut off as Tiki leaps over them straight at you. You've never felt something this strong, a single hand is wrapped around your throat and it is getting harder to breath. Everything is starting to fade actually, you can still make out the sound of gun fire from below.

So this is how it ends? Trying to save the life of another?

You close your eyes as you feel the last wisps of air exit your body. This really is it.

Come on now kid, that isn't bravery. And neither is this Masked person. Bravery isn't holding a gun or giving your life, it's knowing you are gonna get licked before you begin and trying to seeing it through. So don't give up on me here. I'll help you take that destiny of yours and shape it into the future you want it to be. Show these folk what real courage is.

Everything goes black. You only hear the voice now.

Yes, let's do this.

That's the spirit, just call my name when you need it. But first we need you woken up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjCBV6o_DSE

You're awake. Face down on in the dirt, but alive. Air fills your lungs like you never had air before as you force yourself up.

Masked is laying face down as well. But Tiki is walking to them with their back to you, spear in hand. You need to act fast.

Swaying as you get up straight, the voice speaks again.

One more thing, we must make our deal straight. Put out your hand grab destiny from those that mean to steer you. Make it your own!

You reach out and make a fist, you feel a solid object in it. Then an immense amount of pain. All you can bring yourself to do is bare the pain and cry out.

Tiki turns to you as Masked tries to get up, dropping their gun.

Looking down at your hand you see a brand in the shape of key.

Open the way! Call my name!

A ghostly figure stands appears you. They seem to be humanoid, their body like a white suit. Their shoulders point backwards with spikes and their feet are that of a bird. Their head is hooded, but you make out a pair of glowing goggles for eyes.

"Come forth, Atticus!"

With a flash of light they solidify. Atticus pulls out a strange looking rifle from behind the two of you in one hand and shoots Tiki.

The mask of Tiki flies off, revealing the pitch black skin you thought you saw earlier. Their face is featureless except for two small glowing dots for eyes.

Now they will show us what they really are.

Suddenly they collapse and melt down to a puddle under their armor. From the black puddle something starts bubbling up. The ooze takes an incomplete shape, like a half melted person with gunk instead of skin.

It is already weakened, we should be fast if you want to save your friend over there.

The slime lurches forward, you feel an understanding of what Atticus can do.

"Take them out!" you call out, pointing to the mass of slime and bone crawling to you.

Atticus holds out the strange rifle again, it looks like a bolt action gun with wings trailing off the stock, and fires into the slime. The shot takes out a chunk of ooze with it.

The slime is looking very weak as it lunges at you. You are able to sidestep the attack in time as it crushes a branch where you were.

You are ready yourself for another attack when you hear a bang. The slime melts into a black puddle again and quickly evaporates.

Well that is taken care of, call on me when you are in trouble again. Atticus speaks to you before fading away.

Masked is sitting against a tree with their gun in their hand. "That was my last shot..."

Remembering what you left the circle in the first place for you help Masked up and walk them back to the tent where they lay down.

"I don't know what the hell that was, but thanks. I've..." they trail off, looking down at their blood stained robes.

"I've got this, your friend was to the North of here. It looked like a pair of those tiki things were keeping him held in a wooden cage."

You kneel down next to them "I'm not leaving you here to bleed out. I took a look around camp while you were gone and didn't see any medical supplies."

Masked sits up enough to take a pouch off the back of their belt then goes back down. They quickly pass you a wash cloth and groan "Just press down and let up when I say."

You take the rag and nod as Masked rolls up their robes. Huh, they are wearing regular pants under there and they have pale skin too. Also yep, Masked is a girl. But now isn't the time to worry about that!

The stab wound is didn't look to hit anything vital, at least you hope so. You haven't really studied anatomy that much. Focus! You press the rag down on the wound. "Off!"

You pull away as Masked pours one of the waters onto the wound and quickly covers it with gauze. With the bleeding been stopped you sigh in relief.

"Do you think one of us could use that spear or something else to get Martin?" You ask as you quickly step out of the circle to get your belt.

Masked slowly sits up, making sure they aren't going too fast. "This is a real gun, I thing I should hang on to it. But you could try using that spear or I have a few other weapons stashed away here."

"You do? But I looked around for them." You ask, gesturing with both hands around the camp.

Masked points a rather large rock across the camp from the tent "It's hollow."

A quick knock confirms it is hollow. With a small amount of effort you tip it over to reveal a duffel bag and inside is a whole lot of old weapons. You give Masked and confused look.

"Did you think I was going to sneak guns into a school?" she ask. Valid point.

What weapon will you use for now? You aren't keen on carrying around a whole bag that can get stuck on trees.

You take the hunting knife and feel it in your hand, yeah that should do. As you zip up the bag a thought crosses your mind "School? You mean you are from Birchland?

Masked is up and double checking the papers "Yes, I discovered that crack and have been investigating this place for 2 weeks now. All I'm sure of is the dangerous creatures, the wall around this jungle, and the crack doesn't move."

"Well that is good to know. Are you gonna be good to come along?"

She puts a hand to where to wound is and picks up a a large branch, you aren't sure as a staff or walking stick. "I'll follow you for now. I know the way after all."

"Let's keep it slow and quiet. Maybe we can get the drop on them and avoid more enemies."

Masked nods, using that big branch as a walking stick to clear the way as you start into the jungle.

Before you get too far and risk running into anything you ask a question "So did you see the ghost thing too and do you have one?"

"I saw it, but I'm not sure what that was. I'll have to keep an eye out on that more to understand it." she admits.

The two of you are quiet after that, just focusing on avoiding anything too loud. The jungle is almost relaxing this quiet.

Then you are stopped by Masked and the point ahead. You've noticed you are going the direction of the hill you saw earlier, but in your path are two tiki creatures.

This is your chance to ambush a pair of them, or you could try to sneak by. But leaving them here for later might mean more trouble.

Masked fires a shot as you have Atticus shoot, both attacks miss however. The tiki creatures soon close in on top of you both. Once close they both melt down into the black puddles and reform.

This time their shapes are different. The pair look to be small blue creatures poking their head out of clay pots.

The second they are done forming one of them fires a bolt of lighting at you. For the second time in only an hour or so your life flashes before you eyes.

Your body is moving on its own though, throwing you out of the way of the attack. It seems like you lost the element of surprise.

Masked signals to you she will try to whack one with her walking branch, they don't seem too tough.

"Atticus, try your other attack!"

Masked slams their branch into one enemy, but before Atticus can act the enemy fires another bolt of electricy at you.

You manage to drop on your back to get out of the way and stand up quickly. Atticus appears behind holding a book out.

The enemy that attacked you is hit by a ball of white light from above once Atticus closes the book, they both are on the ropes.

Suddenly you are feeling very sleepy though...

Wait, you can't fall asleep, that must have been one of their skills! You wake yourself up with a quick smack on the face.

The enemy are weakened greatly, but they are faster than you it seems.

You draw the knife out, it isn't like you are useless without Atticus. The creatures fire a bolt of lightning at both you and Masked. Masked manages to dodge in time, but you get clipped by it.

Pain sparks out across your body, but this is nothing to when you first summoned Atticus. These guys can barely hurt you.

With that knowledge, you charge them. Masked smacks the second one in the pot, causing them to almost jump out of it and giving you the perfect angle for something you want to try.

You reach out with the knife as the creature gasps in surprise, stabbing right through its mouth. It's a weird feeling, like cutting through wax or a thick liquid. The knife and your arm go right through, stabbing the other and finishing off both.

Atticus' voice echoes in your head Not bad James. Being able to take up Arms for yourself. Have more of my power.

"I'll climb up and try to ambush the birds. Maybe you can stay back and try to free Martin once I have their attention?" You say as you get down in the grass.

"Fine, but if you are in danger I'll help you out."

Masked crouches down low as you start to crawl up through the tall grass. You need to get to the other side of the tree from Martin for the best chance of this working.

It is a very tense few minutes, but eventually you are in position. Everything is ready and you are about to have Atticus attack when you hear Martin wake up "Hey you stupid birds! Let me out of this cage!"

The birds both swoop down. You can't tell what is happening too much from your position, but you think one of them is attacking Martin! Just as you are about to go and head you realize the other bird is above you.

Feathers fall as it sheds the mask, turning into a ball of sludge in mid air before it brightens to almost blinding amounts. You hope Masked can help Martin in time, because you are on your own over here.

Without knowing what this thing is gonna do, you focus on defense. The wispy creature fires a weird swirl of colors at you, but you keep your head clear and roll under the attack.

Thanks to your new position you can clearly see what is happening. Masked has run up and wails on the bird, but to little effect. It to sheds the bird look for the ball of light.

Masked is however hit by a different attack. A red beam hits her and the ball seems to heal back what little damage it took from the swing.

Martin is trying his best to get out of the cage, but he isn't built for ripping wood apart. "James! What the hell is going on?"

"I'll explain when we are safe!" You call back, now it is two on two at least. Masked draws her gun again, looks like she gave up on the staff.

"Atticus lend me your power!" You call, having Atticus take a shot at one of the enemy.

But when he shoots it goes wide, bouncing off the cage as Martin screams "Dude woah!"

They must not think of you a threat, as they both focus on Masked. She is battered by the swirl of colors, and drops to her knees. Her shot grazes one of the orbs.

You need to do something to change the momentum and fast.

----

This mask is really starting to be annoying. The modulator you stuffed in the beak makes it hard to talk when you are out of breath.

Fucking damn it! You can't do anything to these creatures with just your gun. You are suppose to keep these kids safe and now its the other way around.

You are busy with other stuff and when you start making cuts do try and figure this stuff out more all you get is stabbed in the gut! You don't have time to rest in the hospital!

Perhaps you need to make more time? Focus on the task at hand to guide those with you ahead.

Who are you? What do you know? I can handle everything just fine on my own.

Really? Look again, you are barely up. But I can help you. I have walked this path before. Let me show you how to walk the path and show others the way.

-----

Martin is in danger, you can't just run away. Wait, what is Masked doing?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcWKZTI9OC4 [Embed]

Masked drops her gun and stands slowly. The glove on her left hands burns away. "Aaaah! Come ooooon!"

She clenches the free hand into a fist, as a two cups with water flowing around them in a circle burns itself into the back of her hand.

"Burn this brush away, Sacagawea!" She yells out

Another spirit is fading in behind her. This one looks to be a woman with a large ruby sticking out of her back. Her hands end in claws and her clothing is various patched together furs.

The eyes are smoking and two pigtails go down the side of her head. The spirit, Sacagawea, clenches a fist and one of the balls burst into flames!

Masked looks ready to keep going as the ball seems to be stunned.

Masked ignites the other sphere, causing them both to be stunned. You both then stab into the one closer to. You with your knife and Masked with Sacagawea clawing into them.

They seem to resist the attacks somewhat, but they are weakened enough at this point to be finished off. As you pull your hand out of the puddle of gunk Martin speaks up again.

"So what is going on again?! I fall after some Masked person I see on the catwalk and pass out. Next thing I'm being carried by some birds and thrown in a cage. Once I give up and take a nap you show up with who and start summoning ghost?"

"They are extensions of our will." Masked explains as you hack the door open for Martin.

Martin jumps out of the cage and dust himself off . When he turns to Masked he continues "I don't even know you! James, who is this person?"

"Call down Martin, she is.."

"Someone who saved both of our lives. If it weren't for her we would both be dead. But she is also from our school. Would you kindly tell us your name?"

Masked shakes her head. "I can not do that. Just know so long as we are in this place I will be an ally and guide."

Martin looks up at the sky "You know who we are though, but anyone know the way out?"

Masked picks up their weapons and starts back to camp "I do, but you need to be quiet on our way back to camp."

The walk back is quiet. Masked is leaning on that branch more, but seems used to sneaking around in the jungle. Martin nearly freaks out a few times when leaves slap into his face a few times, but is able to stay calm. There is even a stream that calms your nerves.

Eventually you reach camp again, all the paper still intact. Masked takes a seat in the tent as you give Martin his phone back. "Thanks man,"

"Ahem, before I go over how to get back I think its best to explain what I know fully. This place is inhabited by various tribes of these shadow creatures. All of which seem to be fighting. The thing is this place was empty up until a few days ago."

"Well what happened a few days ago?" Martin ask, checking his phone to see if anything was broken.

"This is just a theory, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the school. I was in the auditorium when the crack first appeared. It was subtle though, like it really was a crack forming. The day it happened was back to school night."

"I think it is safe to say these "Shadows" are related to the student body. I've noticed certain types forming small groups together, and recently the students have been forming cliques and acting strange."

Martin seems to be thinking this over in silence. It is all whole lot to take in.

You speak up about the guys from lunch "Yeah, these big guys stepped on Martin's lunch and told him to watch it. It was something out of a TV show."

"Hmm, do you remember anything else strange about the students?" Masked ask, rubbing the chin under her mask.

"Not really, but why do you keep saying THE students? You aren't a teacher are you?"

Masked dismisses the question with her hand "Me? No, I just don't know what else to everyone."

"Actually why would someone be alone in the auditorium during back to school night? Nobody was suppose to go in there" Martin points out.

"Enough about me! Why don't we focus on getting back? All you have to do is go back to your entrance point, close your eyes, and open a door knob."

Martin and you share a look and turn back to Masked. He speaks up first "Excuse me?"

"Fine, don't believe me. I'll be going then." Masked says as they stand up.

"You go first Martin. If something bad happens I can defend myself."

"I guess the worst that happens is I'll look stupid." He grumbles as he walks over.

Martin goes through the same motions as Masked, then vanishes. You stand up and walk over to the spot. This should be easy then.

See you next time your in here. Can't be talking with you in the other world too much.

You close your eyes, but in the dark you see the outline of a door. Reaching over you grab the doorknob and step through into a green light.

With a thud you land back in the auditorium, feet first in the orchestra pit. Martin is looking down at you from the railing to keep students from falling in. "So I guess we should go get our stuff huh? According to my phone its... 3:34 pm"

"What about the teachers?" you ask as you climb back up.

"What about our stuff!?" Martin yells before booking it out. You are quick to follow.

Luckily the room is unlocked, Mrs Young and Ms Brown are talking about something. Both of you try to grab your stuff without incident, but Ms. Brown stops you. "Just where have you two been all class?"

"Umm, we got lost trying to find you to sign our early release forms!" Martin lies, poorly.

Ms. Brown sighs and puts her head in her heads "I already said there wouldn't be any."

It looks like Ms.Brown is about to go off on you and Martin, but Mrs.Young saves you by speaking up "Say Trisha. What is that stain on your shirt? Have an early dinner while you were out?"

Huh, it looks like she has a ketchup strain on her shirt. But why is it on the inside? Wait...

Before anything else can be said Ms. Brown is walking out the door "I need to go take care of this!"

Mrs.Young sighs and goes back to doing something on the computer as you and Martin leave.

"What was that all about?" he ask as you both walk to the school parking lot

You are tempted to not tell him, but Martin deserves to know after what happened today. "The masked woman got stabbed in the same place where that "ketchup stain" was."

"So that means..." Martin gives you a confused look "How did you know they were a woman anyways?"

"Well I could tell when I was helping them with the stab."

"You seriously helped with that? I can't stand blood. Anyways our teacher is doing all that?" He ask as you both step outside.

"I guess so, but I'm not sure if we should bring it up to her yet."

Martin takes out a pair of keys "Alright, I won't bring it up until we both decide to. Anyways where is your ride?"

Oh right, your great uncle drove you here. He probably is still busy. The buses drive down the road to go drop off students as you realize this.

"I don't have my own car actually." You didn't really get a licence either, but its not a big deal.

"Sorry man, I need to go home fast. Can't give you a ride." Martin says with a sad look on his face.

"It isn't a big deal, see you later Martin." You think about how long the walk will be as you both walk up to Martin's car.

"Bye James, stay safe man." he says before getting in and driving off. He lives the other way down the road anyways.

Well the buses are gone and you aren't sure if Carson even knows when school lets out.

With a heavy sigh you know what you have to do. You start the walk back home beside the road. Sadly this place doesn't really have sidewalks, most of the homes close to the school are old farms.

You realize you should probably call Carson you are walking home. When you call him up it goes to voice mail though, he must be busy. "James here, just letting you know I'm walking home today."

As you walk past a field of half harvest corn you feel the exhaustion of all of the day's activities weigh down on you.

There isn't a day in your life that comes anywhere close to the amount of stuff you did today in that Shadow World place. Stopping for a second you close you raise your hand up to the sky and look at it.

For a second you think you see the key tattoo, but that went away after going back through the crack. Then you look back down and it is still there, and glowing.

You look around to see if anyone can notice when you notice your reflection in a puddle. It is night time in the puddle and behind you is that fake constellation they said was the Fool.

Open the way to learn more Says a familiar voice, but nobody is around.

We only mean to aid you in your task, James. The chill down your spine confirms it, that is Igor's.

The sun is still high in the sky as you stare down at the puddle.

You almost feel like you don't have a choice as you reach down. The sky and ground shift in a haze back to the observatory from your last dream.

Igor motions for you to draw closer, but you don't see Abigail. "Hello again, after today I think you might need some assistance with your journey so I've set something up for you."

Igor holds up a green book. "The spirit called Atticus is a Persona. Persona are the manifestations of your inner workings. But you, as the Fool, are a wild card. One such as you has the power to wield multiple Persona."

"What do you mean multiple? Do I have multiple personality syndrome?"

Abigail walks over and hands Igor a plain looking pen. "No nothing that bad, it just means your spirit is more flexible. To gain new Persona you will have to recruit them with these. Simply talk down a Shadow and have them sign on these pages."

The book and pen are placed into your hands before vanishing "You manifest them when they are needed. But only a set amount of Persona can be handled at one time. Too many and you won't be able to control them."

"You really expect me to talk down those creatures and have them sign a book?" That is a little far fetched given how they responded.

"When a Shadow is stunned or facing more powerful foes your words will be much more convincing I assure you. But your Persona can't grow on their own." He says, taking a sip of something from the cup on his desk

"Master Igor, means to say is that you must make bonds with others. A powerful alliance will make your Personas stronger and you may even learn a thing or two." Abigail adds before going back to reading

Atticus suddenly manifest next to you, fully solid. "I hope you don't expect me to let myself be put in the back pages, I was the first to make a pact with him.

There is a grumble from Igor before he smiles "Oh I suppose we can give you a spot, it is interesting enough. Your current limit is 5, James."

Atticus pats you on the back "Well if you need to talk with me, just concentrate. Even if others leave you, I'll be here for you kid."

"How touching, but I think its time you go back now. For future reference you can reach here anytime you feel you find a pool of water with the sky in its reflection. By your choice of course."

"Wait I want to leave on my ow-"

You are cut off as you find yourself standing back in the real world. The words of Atticus echo in your head as you continue home...

I am thou, thou art I...
Thou hast forged a new union

Together thou shall open the way
that leads to a better tomorrow

With aid from the Fool Arcana,
support and loyalty shall follow.

The rest of the walk home is rather uneventful. You notice Carson is still gone when you get back, his car isn't even at the church. But every step feels like you are walking on nails so you flop on the couch when you walk in.

Walking down the hall there are two doors that you aren't sure is behind them. Carson would have said if you weren't allowed in them, so it should be fine.

The door next to your room is locked. Even after a few tries to make sure something just isn't blocking it you are certain it is locked. That is worrying to say the least.

You try the other door and find it unlocked. Slowly you step into the dark room, fumbling for a light switch. After flipping it you aren't sure what to make of the room.

Everything is covered in a fine layer of dust, but the room is completely empty. The only thing in there is the ceiling fan. Looking around you find no cracks, hidden panels, anything.

Leaving that weird room behind you check out the kitchen, it has a nice stock of food. Your Great Uncle seems to have a wide variety of things, must be why he is still so active in his old age.

After you sit down on the couch you sign and close your eyes for just a minute...

Fuck you fell asleep. According to your phone it was just only 20 minutes. There is also another text from Carson "On my way! Bringing cake and burgers."

As you sit up you hear the sound of a car pulling up. Huh, he sent that before you fell asleep.

Your Great Uncle comes in with a paper bag and carefully wrapped bag. "Good evening, sorry about that. The wedding nearly slipped my mind, but I make a habit of not sticking around for receptions. Hungry?"

Together you both the table for dinner and it goes quick thanks to it just being plates and napkins. Carson says his own quick grace before you dig in to the burgers "Did you learn anything new today?"

You give a nod as you finish your bite "Not much though, it was mostly just getting papers for parents to sign."

"I'll take care of that for your then. Just hand them my after dinner." Oh right...

"Sure, no reason to turn you down. What do I need to do?" you ask after eating your last bite

Carson takes up the plates empty plates and you join him in washing them. "Well you mostly just need to help me make sure everything runs smoothly. Light candles before people arrive, make sure they know the collection box is there, clean the pews when service is over."

"That shouldn't be too hard. Sounds good." You say, making sure to wash all the soap off.

Your great uncle smiles over "Thank you James."

A voice echos in your head...

I am thou, thou art I...
Thou hast forged a new union

Together thou shall open the way
that leads to a better tomorrow

With aid from the Star Arcana,
support and loyalty shall follow.

The two of you talk a little bit more as he puts the cake in the fridge. After a particularly loud yawn you decide it is a good time to go to bed.

After your nightly routine you pass out hard and have the first peaceful night of sleep in a few days.

>9/6 > > > 9/7

The morning goes flies by as you get ready for school. Carson is already gone, but all your papers are signed on the kitchen table. Luckily your trusty bike carries you to school at a decent pace.

You get to school just in time and head to your first class. Martin and you don't have much chance to talk though as you are actually called on for a history question.

"Mr. Baker, what empire did Francisco Pizarro conquer?"

Pizarro sounds Spanish...

Cortez definitely dominated the Aztecs, but I'm iffy if Pizarro also counts for that if he was a leading officer of Cortez.

I'm voting Incan. Though, he only won the war due to the foreign diseases he brought over.

"The Incan empire." you said confidently.

Ms. Reynold's eyes widen "Correct, good job."

The rest of the class goes on about various explorers and you learn a few new things. You feel your SMARTS have improved

Other classes go by like a blur, you and Martin make sure to get together at lunch to talk about yesterday.

After the math bell you both get in the lunch line together, everyone seems engrossed in their own conversations. "I still can't really believe yesterday happened. Like wow..." Martin trails off

"Me too, but we shouldn't talk about it in line too loud."

Martin hands over his bag of chips "So I guess we shouldn't eat at my spot more and most of the other tables were claimed yesterday. Where are we gonna eat dude?"

You grab your sandwich from the lunch lady and step out into the cafeteria. The only tables open look to be...

Let's aim for the scene shop. Theater people always stay in there, productions take a long time and they basically live in there.

(Trust me on this, I was in technical theater in high school, and members of crew spent study hall, lunch, and sometimes nights in the scene shop. We had a fridge, microwave, and even a couple of hot plates in there.)
>>

>>
>>1564852
Supporting this, actually. Disregard my vote.

Also, I doubt the library would allow food or drink. Best go to the theatre instead, they're usually pretty lax about food brought so long as you don't leave scraps in the trash to attract vermin.
>>
>>1564852
Actually, gonna switch to this, tech crew is pretty chill about visitors usually.

As long as they don't touch the props.
>>
>>1564878
To do that, you have to join and make the blood oath. My crew was pretty chill, but we had fucking rituals for the prop shop.

Mine was overworked and underpaid. We (the 25ish student on the crew) ran EVERYTHING. Shows, assemblies, conferences, talent shows. We had access to everywhere because we did $10,000 worth of labor for free annually. Plus, my highschool was basically a college campus.
>>
>>1564896
>>1564862
>>1564890
I double checked some notes, and my crew years had me working around 280ish days on production per year. Each day was from whenever school let out to around 8pm on non-tech days, 11pm to 3am on tech week.
>>
>>1564906
Fuckin A m8
>>
>>1564911
Hey man, we did 11 full shows (2.5 weeks per run), ran 3 theaters, did the (something around) 20 assemblies, and also ran non-school events like the local Hepzibah Home's talent show. We had one of the best goddam theater programs in the state, if not the country. We regularly had 2000 plus attendees per show at our yearly spring musical.

I personally was a head of department on the lighting, sound and rigging sections, as well as a part of the carpentry, painting, props, costume, makeup, and pyrotechnics teams. Only thing I didn't do was stage design.

"Scene shop should be fine right? Theater people were relaxed about it at my school."

Martin gives you a confused look "You mean backstage? The drama people here just build stuff on stage."

Huh, guess your old school cared more about drama. "Sounds good to me, we can even keep an eye on the crack."

The two of you carefully head back stage and eat your lunch out of the way of the various theater stuff. The crack sits there glowing in the air. "So how come we didn't see it before?" Martin asks

"I don't know, do you think Ms. Brown has an idea?"

"I hope she do- oh shit. I need to go to the office, I'm I forgot man. Talk to you during study hall though?"

You wave as Martin hurries away "Oh, yeah later."

Silently you eat your lunch, trying to figure out more about the crack. You can't seem to get it off your mind in your other classes either. Even Mr. G's passion can't shake it out of your mind.

Finally you get to study hall and Martin is nowhere to be seen. Ms. Brown notices you entering and you hear what she says to Mrs. Young "I'm going to have him help me grade papers instead of writing him up, I found out he was new here."

Mrs. Young just nods and you turn around without sitting down "So where is your friend?"

"I don't know, Martin said he had to go to the officer earlier."

"Hmm, well it would be a waste of time for us to discuss things and have to tell him again later."

Ms. Brown bites on her thumbnail as she tries to think of what to do. The first thing that comes to mind for you is

>We should ask if he had to go home early

"Maybe he is talking to a teacher or in the-"

She cuts you off and takes out her phone "Hmm, that makes sense. You said you both were skipping yesterday to try and talk to me, right?"

"What about the crack, he wouldn't do that again right?" He seemed pretty interested about it today, you were too

Ms. Brown blinks at you "The Crack? I don't know what highschoolers are calling things these days so just call it what it is."

Oh right, she is trying to keep the mask thing a secret. "Well his last class was programming, we could go check ask them."

"That is agreeable, I know where most classes are so just follow me." She says before fast walking down the hall. Running isn't allowed, but only if a teacher isn't too you guess.

Turns out she does actually know the location of the programming class, but when she comes back to you it is with worrying news. "Martin was marked absent and the office didn't excuse it. So he isn't sick and he wasn't released early."

"Hmm, we should split up to find him. I'll search the rest of the school while you look for him at The Crack or whatever it is. I don't want to know."

You sigh as she heads down the hall away from the theater. Backstage you don't find anything, but the crack is there as usual.

While you are looking you hear the sound of the door closing behind you. You gulp and turn, seeing Masked climbing up the cat walk ladder. "Come on now! We have much to explore!"

Oh shit you left a knife in your backpack all day.

"Yeah, let's go!" You half yell, don't wanna get caught.

The two of you jump in and find yourselves back in camp. The fake rock is turned over and Masked confirms the police baton is missing.

"How are we going to find Martin? This place is a jungle." You ask with a tone of worry. Martin may not realize how dangerous this place really is.

Masked looks around before having an idea "Well Martin wasn't the most graceful yesterday. Perhaps we can try to follow his tracks."

"Well, that or he follows a source of water that wouldn't leave his tracks too much. The ground there is solid and naturally cleared away."

You remember you also left a pretty clear path yesterday on the way to the hill, he might have gone that way.

"Let's go with tracks, but I'm still not sure why he would come back."

"Maybe he is jealous? I admit I would be too." Masked remarks as she searches for a clue.

You follow her around as until she finally finds something "Martin wouldn't be like that, I mean come on."

The two of you go at a quick pace, wanting to find him as fast as possible. It looks like he just went in a random direction and was using the baton to clear stuff out of his way.

What you two find isn't what you expected though. The trail leads to a cliff with a small wooden bridge across it. And what looks like a stone entrance that is sealed shut.

A small waterfall is running down the other cliff side and you can just barely make out Martin's occasional glimmer of his glasses. It looks like he has his camera out and is watching a group of shadows in tiki armor.

He hasn't noticed you though, but the Shadows are right in the way of your only path to him. Masked whispers up to you "Have any ideas? If we try to alert Martin odds are the Shadows will see us."

Whatever we try to do can very easily alert the shadows too.

And if Shadows attack him on that side, we'd have to clear through our own before reaching him.

If you do anything you might alert the shadows, and they are much closer to him than you. You lean in and whisper to Masked "Let's take them out."

Masked looks at you, then back to Martin, and nods. Together you both creep closer to the bridge to get an angle. The shadows are in front of the door and right next to the bridge. Funneling them on it should be things easy,

If they get on top of you things might be problematic three against two, but you handled the other shadows fine so far. You summon Atticus as Masked pulls out her gun and you both fire at the same time.

The mask fly off to reveal two bird like humanoids, stunned. Before the thrid shadow can even act you both fire a shot at the same time, killing it out right.

You both reveal yourselves and ready shots as they recover, but you swear you hear one of them speak up "Hol! Me gud-gud, not bad-bad. No die!"

Masked is giving you a confused look and you see Martin is holding his phone, frozen.

Putting your knife away, you focus on the talking birdwoman The green book appears in one hand and a pen in the other. You draw closer, Masked switching their aim to them.

"Sign on this page." You say, holding the pen out.

Hold on kid, I've got to make sure of something first. Atticus says to you as he appears, he snatches the pen up and rapidly writes down what you think is legal terms?

A contract doesn't mean anything without terms, have to make sure people are held to their word.

Atticus hands the pen back to you and the birdwoman takes it in her mouth. HAR-PY

Harpy huh? Why can't they all be that easy to guess. As you close the book Harpy rips out the throat of the other shadow. "Fre-Fre! Me gud-gud!"

>Atticus level up!
>S-3 > 4
>E-3 > 4
>M-3 > 4
>A-2
>L-2 >3
>Atticus learned Dia

After that Harpy vanishes and you feel you hand start to burn again. An ink vines seems to sprout out of the key and wrap itself around your wrist. Both Persona vanish after that.

Martin and Masked both yell at the same time "What the fuck was that?!"

Having a guess at our party's arcana, I would think Chariot (Solves problems primarily by force and self confidence) or Temperance (duality of teacher life and masked hunter life) for Masked? Martin definitely seems like a Devil (selfish impulse, ruled by emotions) here, though I may be wrong.
