Howdy

Alright, let's get started then. So you aren't confused, Im going to let you know right now that Im skipping forth a couple of days and then will do a reversal to right when the battle ended.

***

In the early morning of Setting Fire's 21st, a long fisherman was the first to spot the imperial fleet of rockitships as they approached the harbor.

The ships caused the clouds to burst as they broke through them in a slowly descending angle, letting holes of light in the cloud-covered sky to announce their arrival.

The large 'HMS Empress Pride' at the back of a reverse V formation, the sight of the flying ships was soon noticeable enough to draw forth first the entire population of the docks, and then the rest of the city, out unto the streets, roofs and balconeys.

The elegant and slim wooden corvettes arrived first at the swa waters before the city, causing a small panic to break out amongst the two Alquian navy ships at the docls.

Their captains and crew quickly began battle preparations, and then martyrdom as it became clear that the two light ships (undergoing repairs) had no chance to stop the sudden invaders, yet the sight of the imperial flags hanging from the mast of the forthmost ships held the opening shots at bay.

As the forthmost corvette, the HMS Dragon, passed by the two local ships, the sight of its crewmembers saluting from the deck and dressed in imperial uniforms along their lionkin officers, the ships state went from alarm to caution.

Greetings were exchanged, and caution finally changed into celebration, as it seemed like the motherland had finally reopened communications (and possibly trade) with the currently isolated 'colonies'.

Of course, the city officers heard about it almost right away, and before the hour, several messengers had been exchanged in order to clarify the situation.

In the message coming from the rockitship fleet's capital ship, it said:

>A imperial princess had come to reinvigorate the royal bloodline and take charge of the colonies.
>A imperial princess was in an inspecting tour of the colonies.
>The western/old empire had decided to reclaim the colonies.

With no time to prepare a proper welcome, the vizir has the city troops dress in gala and clear the streets leading to the palace as he goes to greet her majesty.

And that is how an old man on a palaquin makes his way to the docks.

Having aged greatly over the last month, the last vizir of Alquia is carried on the shoulders of the younger generation as a frail old man, cursing at the aging body that had turned him into everything he hated in the empire he dreamt of reinvigorating.

An all important burden in the shoulders of the future.

The sight of the imperial flag on the mast of the Empress Pride sends a jolt through his old body, more than enough to shake his spirit and pull him to his feet. The aches of his old body, the weariness of a long life, the burden of friends gone, the soreness of his bones, the screaming of his muscles and the pain along his left arm. All of it is gone.

As the old vizir finds himself leaping down from the palaquin before the officers can stop him, and walking with sure steps towards the imperial ship, his eyes finally spot the sight he had been looking for. His empress is back.

She looks just as she did on the day he entered her sevice, some six decades prior. Beautiful and perfect, a gentle young princess just ready to become the beloved mother of the empire.

"What are you doing!?" -he calls out to the troops- "Her majesty has returned!"

As he turns around to look at the officers behind him, he sees a strange sight.

Why are they fussing so much about the palaquin? Just drop that thing and... oh

"T-the vizir is dead." - says the healer as he finishes examining the frail body of the old man on the cushions- "It was too much for his heart."

With the death of the vizir, the line of seneschals survives through his son, and the newly arriving empress finds that her first official task is to approve of an old man's testament, having his ashes spread on top of his empress' favorite flowers at the imperial gardens.

"E-eldric, what do I do?" - says the beautiful young empress
"Smile and wave." - says the young duke at her side.

*** A Few Days Earlier ***

"We lost five ships to the sea. Three more are damaged but still sea-worthy. We are still accounting for the crew." - reports an officer in the command deck

The admiral nods and orders him to carry on.

Shortly after, the princess' group [Treestride]s back unto the ship, and are greeted with news of the victory.

Along their way to the command deck, they see a great number of injured and/or wet sailors that have been rescued from the waters, being led to the sickbay or at least warmed up with blankets and hot drinks.

Looks like some alquian crewmembers made it out of their sinking ship as well, though you don't see enough of them to be the crew of the Guardian.

Indeed, the Guardian has taken relatively little structural damage, and is not in any immediate risk of sinking.

"It is dead in the water." - explains the admiral- "So we are using it as a defacto prison and medical facility for now. It will have to be towed to a harbor before it can move under its own power again."
"Were there many dead?" - Asks Mako softly
"...the ships that went down each had a crew of under two hundred, of which we have managed to rescue a little over three hundred so far, mostly with the help of the duke's pets." - replies the admiral

That means there's around 800 sailors still MIA.

"Yes, lord."

Of course, in the case of survivors after a sea battle, the chance of survival decreases drastically as minutes pass, but thanks to the efforts of the crew and our pets, we manage to rescue as many of six out of ten missing sailors.

As for the list of prisoners, it sems to have a somewhat confusing character. An apparently western noble that claims to have rank in the imperial court, yet identifies himself as the minister of the left, which is the position we currently hold.

That's the position the man who tried to get rid of Mako had.

Yeah this asshole is Mako's trauma, so let's just deal with him quietly, shall we?

We ask the captain (discreetly) to set up a meeting with the man, and so wait for him in a somple cabin.

As we expected, when the man sees us, his expression grows weak and he struggles briefly in the hands of the crew members that brought him to us.

"So, Ren's mercy was indeed wasted on you. To think you'd try something like this... I wonder if I shouldn't just throw you overboard and let the sea deal with you."

"...I see. So you have taken my position within the court, haven't you?" -he says after a few moments.

"It has been asked of me to fill your shoes. It wasn't that hard, since I use a lot less time trying to get people ruined or killed."

"So, now that you have me, and since you've already said you 'should' throw me overboard, I assume you would like to, but won't, am I right? Now that you have me, what will become of me?"

"I think I'll send you back to Mantequira."

"I am exiled. If I go back, I'll be executed."

It was pretty bad. Affected three cities and when it (the power) came back, it only was to some city sectors.

>>Alright...

So, we hear about how after his exile, he made use of his contacts to intercept the official mail ship between Mantequira and Alquia, and alter some key letters to change his status from 'exiled' to 'ambassador plenipotentiary'.

Uh, so the empire keeps a mail service... well, even if they are split now, they used to be a single nation, I guess. In a way, it's admirable, mail people, you've kept working hard without any sort of praise since god knows how long.

Anyway, this guy just keeps accumulating crime everyday and anywhere, doesn't he?

Then, after changing his status and making sure to check any further official messages coming from Mantequira, he began insinuating himself with the few remaining hawks in Alquia.

Apparently, almost all of them passed away during the so-called Gryphon War between the protectorate and Alquia. For some reason.

Slowly, he began spreading his influence, and managed to worsen trade relationships with basically all of Alquia's remaining trade partners, thus worsening the economy and arousing the mood of the normally peaceful nobles into thinking that Alquia should conquer new lands and resources.

This guy, he just continues to accumulate misdeeds anywhere he goes...

With the support of the hawks and a few of the doves, he managed to start an army modernization program. It was just enough money for a few prototypes. Three ships, two armored cars, and about a hundred 'ree-fleas', he says.

This guy, he just creates trouble anywhere he goes!? Ree-fleas... that's not... he doesn't means rifles, right? This world is relatively peaceful and old fashioned, and you are bringing in rifles, armored cars and battleships into it?! what the ...

This guy, he really just causes trouble anywhere he goes!

Wait a minute, ree-fleas? Not rifles? So, he can't pronounce it right... and he didn't say 'engines' properly, either. So, it's not as if he's a slider (dimensional traveler) himself, right?

"How did you manage to have those build? You didn't design them yourself, right?"
"I'm not a craftsman. I just happened to find a interesting animal in the market and got a hold of it, you know? My luck is really amazing, you see? I was born under a mighty star!" - this guy is laughing as if it was his own achievement.

An animal, uh? I guess that means a monster.

Uh? he was a 'Hunter'? We never really checked his job, come think about it.

No, he's a Singer/Noble. So, it's not as if he could keep a 'pet' withj him.

"What about the materials?"
"Well, they're just iron and coal... I think. It wasn't hard to secure those. And copper, it was very insistent about copper for some reason."

I guess he is talking about whoever actually built the ships... must be a 'monster' humanoid, since he keeps using 'it'.

"So, why attack us?"
"I knew the empress would eventually send a large group of ships, I just didn't expect it to be this large."

So, he shot at us to keep us quiet?

"And the officers on the ships?"
"They do as they're told. They're officers, it's their job."

"And because of that hundreds of people are dead on both sides."
"And now you're a conqueror, how does it feel?"
"I don't want to conquer anything. That's just you."
"I just never expected you to have weapons that can hurl lightning down at us. I don't understand, there was so little damage to the ship but things stopped working."
"That's electrical systems and lightning for you. Where's whoever build the ships?"
"If it survived, probably amongst your prisoners, I guess?"
"Then I don't really need you, do I?"
"Wait! I have documents showing who was involved on this project, how about letting me go in exchange for those?"

"You are going. Free? No."

We have the old viper collared and stored away in the ship's brig.

We can't spare Ren from meeting him again, but there's no reason for Mako to go through it.

Now let's see if his 'pet' made it through the fight.
