You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You scoop up a tiny spoonful of chopped apples and guide it into Rhein's mouth while your mother does the same for Aislin.

"Oh, my little boy is all grown up, spoonfeeding his own little boy." Queen Margrete smiles and tickles Aislin's nose. "Isn't that right, Aislin?"

"It's remarkably endearing," Myrddin says. "If I didn't know better, I'd never suspect his highness was a criminal mastermind and war hero."

"I prefer to think of myself as a war hero first and a criminal mastermind second, Myrddin," you say. "But since I am a criminal mastermind, how are the competition doing?"

"You mean Prince Aled's underlings? They're hardly competitive anymore," Myrddin answers. "They're either executed, awaiting execution, or firmly under our control. They won't dare cause problems again for the rest of their lives, I assure you."

"Haul would be grateful if he knew," your mother says. "And if he could understand intrigue."

"He can show his gratitude by doing his job," you say. "Since the problem has been resolved, how's your little web of contacts and agents?"

"I wanted to talk to you about that, actually," Myrddin says. "I could leave them here for the Crown Prince's sake, but there's also time to move them to Olstren. It would make things easier if I could send my people ahead before we went ourselves."

We should really see about getting our brother his own spy master.

"Mother, you're sure you can handle things here?"

"Of course, Meirion," Queen Margrete says. "You'll need those spies more than I will."

Since your mother is confident, you nod to Myrddin, giving him the signal to move his people.

Myrddin takes your order and departs, while you hand Rhein over to your mother's care.

"Mother, would you mind taking care of the children for the afternoon?"

"Of course, dear," she says. "Go make me another grandchild."

You don't even bother responding to her requests anymore. Besides, she is half-right about your plans.

Reagan, Olwen, and Eleri are all waiting for you when you return. They're all wearing thin white shirts that only barely qualify as modest in a sauna. Turning your bathroom into a sauna wasn't too hard; you just needed some heatstones and a few seats to make it more comfortable than sitting on the floor.

"Is her majesty fine with taking care of Rhein and Aislin?" Olwen asks.

"More than fine," you say. "She still wants more grandchildren."

"You told her you have two other daughters with another child on the way in Degfford, right?"

"Several times." You start changing your clothes as well, for what little it matters. "It doesn't seem to be enough."

"Well, I wouldn't mind complying with her majesty's request." Eleri walks up to you, swaying her hips seductively. She wraps her arms around your shoulder and gives you a kiss. "It is my turn next."

"Don't I know it," Olwen grumbles.

"You'll have plenty of time for children once his highness' enemies are all crushed underfoot," Reagan tells her.

You put your hands on Eleri's hips and think for a bit.

"That doesn't sound too bad." You pick Eleri up and she tightens her grip on you.

"I'll help," Olwen says.

"You two can go first then," Reagan says. "I'll relax in the bath for a bit."

Your exertions end with Eleri, you and Olwen sitting on a bench while Reagan soaks in the bath. Olwen looks both immensely satisfied and intensely frustrated, so you grope her a bit a kiss her neck.

"I remember when I was a naïve virgin who only wanted to be tied up and spanked until my ass was red," Olwen says. "Now I just want to have sex for the purpose of procreation. Where did I go wrong with my life?"

"Maybe you're just jealous," Reagan says. "Even though you've been with the prince the longest, you're forced to serve as an outlet for twisted desires while he sires children with other women who can't join him in war."

"Please don't make it worse," Olwen says.

"I'm going to lie down and put my legs up for a bit," Eleri says. "I don't want to risk cleaning it out."

You pull Olwen onto your lap and wash her back with a wet cloth. She rests her back against your chest and sighs.

"I'm a Paladin, you know," she says. "I fought in wars. Commanded armies. So why the hell is this bothering me so much." She then shoots Reagan a pre-emptive glare. "Don't answer."

"Fine, fine." Reagan closes her eyes and sinks back into the water.

"It's not like I ever really cared about having children," Olwen continues. "I knew I was going to have a couple because I need heirs, but I didn't really want it until her highness got pregnant.

"Maybe you want to feel like your life is moving forward?"

"How do you figure?"

"You've been the heir to your family for years now, but your father isn't dying any time soon, so that doesn't really matter," you say. "Aside from the sex, our relationship hasn't changed that much. Everyone else is still moving up, but you've already achieved everything you needed to do aside from having children."

"I guess that's true," Olwen says. "Once you've become a war hero the first time, it doesn't mean as much the second time around. I mean, I do enjoy warfare, but it's not something I want to dedicate myself to exclusively."

"Even when royals and nobles no longer needed to work for themselves, they still need to work to create a solid foundation for their successors," Reagan says. "That could be why it's bothering you so much. You feel the day to work towards something new and more important."

"That does sound fulfilling," Olwen says. "Now, clean me up," she tells you. "And don't miss the good spots?"

"And what would those be?" You grin and nibble on her shoulder.

"Right here." She grabs your hand and shows you exactly where she means.

You're happy to oblige until she's too dazed and tired to ask for more.

Afterwards, you splash some water on the heatstones to make more steam and get into the bath with Reagan. The water is surprisingly cool.

"So, is it my turn yet?" Reagan asks. "I put a lot of work into getting my body back in shape, so I hope you appreciate it."

>"You know I will."
>"I thought you looked more mature after having kids. I rather like it."

"You know I will," you say. "You always looked beautiful though."

Reagan laughs and moves over to straddle you. "Of course I did," she says, "but my hips were sore for weeks, so let's try not to have twins again."

"We can leave that to Olwen."

You spend a little while longer in the sauna and help Eleri clean herself a little - just enough that she won't feel sticky in her clothes, according to her - and return to your room. Eleri lies down on the bed, by you, Olwen and Reagan sit by the window and watch the snow fall.

"The winter isn't very rough this year," Olwen says. "We might be able to return to Degfford fairly early."

"And then we'll move to Olstren," Reagan says. "Are you nervous?"

>"No, not at all."
>"A little bit. I don't usually go to another kingdom unless I need to kill someone."

"A little bit. I don't usually go to another kingdom unless I need to kill someone. I imagine that makes our future vassals more nervous than I am."

"They'll get over it," Reagan says. "So long as they're willing to kneel and follow orders. It isn't like I want to suppress them, but if I don't they'll turn on each other."

"Can't we just do something nice, like visit the Ancestral Olstren Theatre?" Eleri asks. "I saw it once when I was a child. It was very nice."

"Ah, yes, the open-air theatre that's open-air because it's over two thousand years old and no one wants to compromise is cultural value," Reagan says. "The performances themselves are quite underwhelming. It's too big to really see anything, and the sound doesn't carry very well, even with enchantments. I do appreciate its cultural significance, but the Royal Stage is better all around."

"But the cultural significance is half the appeal," Eleri says. "The Royal Stage is the same as every other theatre built within the last hundred years. There's nothing unique about it. Who owns it anyway?"

"The Ancestral is officially owned by the Crown," Reagan says, "while the Royal is patronized by the Crown. So, yes, I can let you have it for a production if you want."

"Thank you! I have a few ideas that merit a larger stage than I usually have access to."

"What about the rest of the social scene?"

"Feasts and bards," Reagan says. "All nobles are expected to be skilled in the arts so they can boast about their accomplishments, but singing and poetry are the most popular forms of expression. The long-winded prefer writing though."

"I wonder if we can teach his highness how to sing," Olwen says. "He certainly has a lot to boast about."

"That does sound interesting," Eleri says. "What do you think, your highness?

"Sure, sounds fun," you say. "It can't be that hard, right?"

Eleri raises an eyebrow. "Do you know how many hours a day I practice my singing?"

"Two to four, depending on whether you're working on something else," you say.

"To be honest… it really isn't that hard," Reagan says. "Few nobles have as much talent as they think. Or if they do, they lose it after the fourth beer."

"We can spend the rest of winter working on my tone," you say.

"I'll help you when I have time," Eleri says.

"I'll mock you when you fail," Olwen says.

"And I'll let you know if you're being impressive enough," Reagan says. "It's boasting, so it should skirt the limit of what's plausible."

You'll need to find a room somewhere out of the way so that no one catches you practicing - even if the singing itself isn't necessarily embarrassing, you doubt failing at that the first few times will be any less embarrassing than failing at any other task - but it'll make a nice, non-violent hobby, plus you'll get to spend some time with Eleri and you'll be able to prepare yourself to help Reagan take over Olstren. That sounds like an efficient use of your time.
