Welcome back to Dark Empire Quest, where you the players aid the reborn Emperor Palpatine and Imperial Commander Alana Tyrna and possibly others as they fight to rebuild the Galactic Empire after the crushing defeat at Endor and the subsequent collapse. We will guide their choices, deal with the consequences of their actions, and work to ensure the Empire rises once again.

I allow between ten and twenty minutes for voting depending on the importance of the issue and how divided the vote is. If the vote is tied up, I usually allow an extra five minutes for a tie breaker, and if no one votes, I roll for the tie breaker (The will of the dark side).

I always try to incorporate (and encourage) write ins if they don't violate the spirit of voted decisions, though I may edit or tweak them to fit better.

I also am always open for questions. I'll just ask that they stay relevant to current events in the quest, or at least the near future.

Alana had spoken with Admiral Yazz at the ball to discover the Admiral wasn't much for words and dismissed her in short order. The ball over, she returned to Splinter with new contacts under her belt including a Kuati supply merchant, a bright-eyed captain who now helms Turmoil and the Duchess of Naboo and distant relation of the Emperor, Ederlathh Palipodes.

In hyperspace approaching Rhen Var the reported location of Luke's hidden Jedi training facility is the Sith Assault Ship Korriban Carrying the Emperor's apprentice, Darth Cythera and Executor Sedriss. Their mission: Kill the Jedi Master.
>>
You follow Sedriss onto the bridge of Korriban, not as expansive as the one you enjoyed on your Star Destroyer Blood Oath but satisfactory for this assignment. The black-clad Shadowtrooper guard detail posted at the turbolift doesn't spare either of you a second glance, and the crew and officers present quickly return to their work.

"My Lord," the ship's captain says, stepping forward, hands clasped behind his back. "We've emerged from hyperspace quite far from the target planet. Our armor plating dissipates any sensors they might direct at us at this range, but as we close, that effect diminishes, and of course we are still visible to the naked eye."

You understand how the stealth armor of your ship works, but don't take it out on the officer.

"Our own readings do indicate there is some sort of activity or outpost on Rhen Var, however . . . "

"However what?" you ask.

The officer winces, "However," he continues "We are not alone in the system."

The captain and Sedriss both follow you the short distance to the tactical station where a nervous midshipman moves aside for you.

"We picked them up on comscan. It appears to be a rebel task force in a geosynchronous orbit over the planet," the captain explains.

You can read the hologram just fine without the captain's explanations. It's a piddling force, but maybe more than a match for your lone cruiser. A Nebulon-B Frigate flanked by two CR-90 corvettes. If that weren't enough, there are also two fighter squadrons loitering in the area. It looks to be a mixed group of X-wings and Y-wings.

"The Rebellion's sent out their B Team to defend the temple," Sedriss says.

"There's more than that," the captain adds, keying in some commands, "There is a transport ship among the warships." He highlights it on the hologram. "And we've detected a light stock freighter making trips down to the planet surface. I suspect they are evacuating the site."

"The bounty hunters you hired tipped our hand," Sedriss growls, casting an accusing glance at you.

You turn a baleful eye to your dark side companion, "If the Emperor had trusted you to handle this mission then he would have asked you to."

A fresh wave of hate seethes off of Sedriss through the force. Fine, so long as he harnessed that power to make himself strong, you didn't care how much he despised you.

"Besides, they'll pay in time."

"As you say, my Lord." Sedriss replies with a mock bow.

Although, the failure of the bounty hunters to keep your plans secret was very detrimental to your plan.

The presence of Rebel ships meant it wasn’t an unarmed, unsuspecting Jedi school you were attacking. Your Assault Cruiser was little more than a glorified transport, while it and its single squadron Tie Avenger compliment could take on the Rebel forces, the outcome of that contest was far from certain, and in fact, the odds may be stacked against you.

You put your surroundings out of mind and reach out through the force, your senses brushing over the minds of those on board you ship, and then those on the rebel fleet. Some of those you sense seem to shine in the force, or at least twinkle. You sense apprehension, determination.

"There," you point at the transport, "The jedi are on that transport."

"Then we should destroy it without delay!" Sedriss says.

You ignore the Executor and keep reaching through the force. You feel Rhen Var, vast and frozen, devoid of life and cloaked in tragedy. Then, a nova of light. A man.

"But Skywalker is on the planet."

You attempt to probe deeper, gather what insight you can.

Also it's obvious he's sacrificing himself to allow the students to get away. We go to the planet and let Setriss deal with the padawans.

You'd never faced an opponent like this. Those you'd trained with and against were Dark Siders, and they felt . . . different in the force. Luke, assuming that was Luke, was like a ball of fire. Too hot to touch, too bright to look at.

"Blast," you hiss and open your eyes. Nothing. But you had to forge ahead, no matter your inability to read Luke's intent. "Options?" you ask the captain.

"A frontal attack on the rebel fleet is possible, but-"

"No guarantee of victory," you finish.

"Yes, quite. And of course we are not in friendly territory, we have no reinforcements to call upon. The same may not be true of the rebels. We're very near the Tion cluster, which is ostensibly loyal to Zsinj, but has pro-rebel and pro-imperial sentiments within, so there's no telling what could come out of there."

"Could we get the Tionese to send a few ships our way?" you ask.

"Quite unlikely, my Lord. Beyond which, any signal we send is likely to be detected by the rebels."

"We do have two Infiltrators on board, they should be capable of reach the planet surface with either a few individuals or a small strike team. It would be risky, but you could theoretically dispose of Skywalker on Rhen Var and escape without a shot being fire," the captain continues.

You'd considered it, but it would be playing right into that Shadow's hands, a face-to-face confrontation with Skywalker. Not this was necessarily bad, but it meant more risk to yourself.

A third option you'd considered, but didn't feel the need to express, was to sit by and watch. Sometimes, the first opportunity to kill a target wasn't the best opportunity. You could follow the Rebels as they evacuate the planet and look for chances to finish off the Jedi master. Of course, this carried with it the risk of losing them, or being led into a trap yourself.

You wished more than ever to have your Star Destroyer with you to make Bantha fodder of that fleet.

"Yes, my Lord," the captain bows and marches off to relay your commands.

"You're going down to fight the Jedi? What can I say, I'm impressed. Unless you intend to send just me and my men," Sedriss replies.

"Get your men together," you tell Sedriss, and grab the best platoon we have. We're going down together."

The ride down to the surface of Rhen Var is a tense one. Four of the best Dark Siders in the empire together in one Infiltrator coming down to slay a Jedi Master. Such a thing had not been attempted since the Jedi Purge thirty years prior. Now it was time to finish what your Master had begun.

The Infiltrator is buffeted by the thin atmosphere of Rhen Var as it comes closer to the designated landing site apart from the complex identified as being the Jedi's base.

The nearer you grow to Skywalker, the harder it will be to shield yourself from him in the force. Although now it will likely be impossible for him to escape you, he may have time to prepare himself. You close your eyes, hands wrapped tight around the hilt of your saber, and focus your energies.

You feel the connection through the force minutes from landing.

He knows. You make the decision not to tell your comrades, it won't change anything.

The two Infiltrators come in low as snow swirls around them, wings folding, gliding to a stop and coming slowly down on repulsor lifts, ramps lowering. The biting cold of the planet rushes into the cabin, tossing your hair.

The blinding whiteness of the planet is punctuated only by the dull gray stone that protrudes from the mountainside. Distantly, though such distances are hard to gauge in the snow, is a crumbling temple-like construction. Closer, a modern hatch set into the ground opens up, revealing a lit subterranean passage and three figures where thick robes.

You recognize the first one immediately as Skywalker, though he looks different than in your vision of him and Vader murdering the Emperor. He wears black armor that is reminiscent of Vader's, he looks older, his face cold. Accompanying him are two others, Jedi. You don't recognize either but they both appear human, or near-human at least. They are strong in the force.

You step down the ramp to meet them, Sedriss and his followers close behind. The second Infiltrator lands nearby and the black armored Shadow troopers dismount and assemble nearby, weapons ready. You can sense they won't last long if it come down to it, but maybe they can serve as a distraction. Beside the Shadow Troopers there are four of you, and three of them.

"You're the Emperor's new apprentice," Luke says, somehow audible over the howling wind.

You scoff, "You're missing the important part, farm boy. I'm the one who's going to make you pay for what you did."

One of Luke's companions snarls and snaps on his blue-white light saber before Luke raises a hand to stop him. "I knew you would come-"

"Pick that up from some bounty hunter scum, did you? You really are a Jedi master," you say.

He ignores your barb, "I know you're here to kill me. If you let the others go, I'll give you that chance."

You can sense there are still some here, on Rhen Var. It seems not all the Jedi manage to escape after all.

You consider the offer and consider betraying Skywalker, all you feel is a burning desire to kill him.

"Okay, Skywalker," you say, "The others can leave. I was told to come and get you, just you. No other Jedi, and I will do what I am told."

"You serve your master well," Luke says.

"Luke, what-" one of the Jedi asks.

"Kyle," Luke interrupts him, "Get the others out of here. I'm counting on you." Luke looks back at you, "You'll let them go? I have your word?"

"What in the name of the Emperor do you think you're doing Mara?" Sedriss hisses in your ear.

"You've got all I'm going to give you," you reply to Luke. "You're Jedi friends can run off and hide, but you're coming with us."

"You're just going to let them leave?" Sedriss asks, dumbfounded.

"I know what I'm doing," you reply hotly. "One more kriffing outburst-"

"And you'll what?" Sedriss snorts, "Take me back to the Emperor too? Our job was to kill him!"

You sense that Sedriss's two Blackguards are more in line with his thoughts than yours.

>Maybe you'd like to take his place? (Threaten him)

Fuck sake Setriss do you even think with your head? Knew it was a bad idead brigging him shouldn't have voted for it...

Our job was to kill Luke, not return him.

If we return him, the Emperor will probably drop us as his apprentice.

Bring Luke into space, and then kill him.
>>
>>1526160
That's what I had planned
>>
>>1526160
Which is all well and good. Right now, the majority voted to offer Luke to turn himself in and let the others escape, so those effects must be explored first
>>
Maybe if we ignore him he will attack then we can usehim as a distraction. B ut i highly doubt it.
>>
>>1526168
I was more thinking in letting Setriss attack Luke and while he's distracted cut the two others

"Do you do anything thinking at all?" you ask Sedriss. "If we take Skywalker back to the Emperor, he can choose to kill him himself if he wants."

Sedriss scoffs, "You're just not up for it. You're afraid."

"I'm not afraid," you reply.

"Master Sedriss, we can take this lot," one of the Blakcguard says, his voice modulated by the vocoder on his helmet. "We should take him ourselves."

During this time, Luke and his two followers don't move, they stand in place, Luke with his hands steepled together looking at peace while the other two shift uneasily, Kyle's hand is near his saber, while the other man has the lit blade already in hand.

Luke opens his eyes and gives you a sorrowful smile, "I sense nothing but darkness in you. The Emperor's warped you into a perfect tool. You would have never let me live."

You flick your thumb and the crimson blade of your saber flashes to life. "Kill them," you say through clenched teeth. "All of them."

"Rayf, watch it!" Kyle calls to the third Jedi and the three of them assume defensive postures.

You have Luke, Sedriss is taking Rayf, while both the Blackguard are going after Kyle.

The two blackguard stagger their attacks, taking turns striking, each of their swings is deftly deflected by the Jedi, but he's getting worn down and driven back. During one such attack, Kyle's saber is knocked out of position and he suffers a jagged slash across his right arm. Kyle cries out, clasping his free hand across the wound.

Sedriss shows no hesitation and knocks Rayf back with a flurry of strikes, sending him collapsing onto his back, scrambling backward toward the doorway, frantically trying to deflect more attacks as Sedriss surges after him.

Feeling a surge of anger-induced energy, you strike at Luke with similar ferocity. The Jedi master sidesteps your attacks easily, using your thrusts against you, drawing you in and pulling you out of position. Finally, he raises his own blade overhead for a wide blow, a rookie mistake, leaving him open for a killing strike at the stomach.

You angle your blade and stab it toward the Jedi Master, feeling intense searing pain across the back of your hand as he spins his blade down, parrying your attack and scorching your hand when his emerald blade brushes it as you fall past him, your own saber finding only air as he spins away from you.

"You're being manipulated," Skywalker says, breathing hard "Whatever the Emperor's offered you, it isn't worth it. My father is testament enough to that."

"He hasn't offered me anything but a secure galaxy," you spy back, fighting back the blinding pain in your hand, carefully flexing your fingers to ensure the hand still works. "And Vader was a fool."

You regain your footing, your Dark Siders rallying to you disengaging from the Jedi, Luke and his students likewise recollecting themselves, Kyle injured, Rayf shaken.

You feel Sedriss's smug satisfaction at your wounding, gritting your teeth not only against the pain but also the humiliation and anger you feel.

The Jedi students are weak, vulnerable. But Luke stands ready to finish what you started.

And that's all the time I have for today!

I'm sad to report I need to leave us on this cliffhanger because I have performance evaluations next week at work and I need to really focus on that. Because of that, our next game session will be next Saturday, 7EST (11 UTC) so just over a week from now.

If you haven't already, follow the game on Twitter
>https://twitter.com/DarkEmpireQuest

As always, you guys were great, I had a blast and I hope you did as well!

To be fair, I'm not happy with some of the dice curves I was getting so I may tweak things a bit
>>
What's up with Skywalkers and hands? They keep cutting or loosing then. It's like they have a fetish or something.

So long you tweak some good rolls for us to.
>>
>>1527533
Yeah so i was thinking about buffing Mara from 5D20 skillz to 10D100. Just see how that plays out.
>>
Rolled 18, 11, 82, 68, 23, 5, 92, 16, 58, 76 = 449 (10d100)

>>1527649
I'd stick with 5d20. 10d100 will be more likely to average due to the larger dice pool and will require either for 10 different anons to roll (which could take a while) or will just have each player roll 10 d100, which is a lot of dice and numbers.
>>
>>1527805
Yeah I was just messing around. I think the last system worked out pretty well
>>
>>1528071
I say keep the current system. It's good we just need to roll better.

I can't believe there's a fricking Star Wars Dark Empire quest where you play as the Reborn Palps and I've missed it. Serves me for being away from the board for a while. Gotta read up. Though I do have a question, Palpatine at the head of the Dark Empire is just so insanely overpowered and has a military so many, many, many times the size of the opposition. It took basicly being pretty retarded for him to lose in that series. So, how is it working out in the quest? Is it too easy? Rebels got a few tricks down their sleeves?
>>
>>1536757
Don't be concerned, TK kept Palpatine strong enough to be a real threat while being balanced enough in terms of limitations and manpower and resources that the quest won't be too easy.
>>
>>1536839
Working my way through the first part, looks like it. Some good decisions in terms of available resources as well as dividing up the galaxy. Pretty interesting setup with Zsinj and Thrawn still being around (at that point atleast).

Welcome! This is actually a perfect time to catch up since game is on hold this week, til Saturday.

Balancing is something I've been concerned with since the begining, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I still have a few tricks and ideas lurking. Some considered to be . . . Unnatural.

Hope to see you on Saturday!

Good news everyone: I made it through my performance evaluation at work with flying colors! This means I can focus on the Quest again!

I wanted to quickly show you a bit of what I've been working on.

All of these values and things subject to change, feel free to argue about them as much as you want.

JEDI POWER LIST
# of D20

1 - Force sensitive
2 - Padawan/Adept (Luke in A New Hope)
3 - Skilled Padawan/Adept
4 - Average Knight (Kyle, Rayf, Sedriss, Luke in Empire Strikes Back)
5 - Skilled knight (Mara)
6 - Elite Knight/Low Master (Luke in Return of the Jedi)
7 - Master (Luke Skywalker in Dark Empire)
8 - Grand Master
9 - Unlimited Power (Palpatine)
10 - One with the Force

-------

Target numbers:

Pick up a fallen lightsaber with the force - 10
Deflect laser fire with a light saber - 20
Lift a star fighter - 40
Pull down an AT/AT -60
Pull down a flying starfighter - 80
Summon a large (Capital ship destroying) force storm-100
Summon a gigantic (Fleet destroying) force storm - 120

These values are based pretty much solely on the Original Trilogy and a handful of EU materials like Dark Empire. In my opinion the prequels made the force "too easy" but that's another argument for another time.

let me know what you think!

It looks good, but I wonder, would Palpatine be a bit depowered temporarily after his resurrection, and not quite curently be at 9? Would add a sense of urgency to researching his dark side stuff. And give reason to bathe in Byss dark side energy.
