MIRANDA
5 Miranda 15 Purps, 20 Lexington, 12 Trisha, 11 Switchwick

Damnit. Yet another bad hand. “Fold.”

You’ve been at this for some time now, and it’s proven that the old man, despite Purps’ claims to the contrary, seems to have luck smiling on him today. He grins with a devil’s look in his eyes as he sizes you up again- he’d been trying to get information out of you, clearly, but you’re not a fan of his continued interrogation. You’re not entirely certain WHY- most folks who hire you prefer to know as little of you as possible, which you’re more than fine with. You’ve occasionally had the curious souls, sure, but that doesn’t mean they’re fun to deal with.

Fortunately, he turns from you towards Purps, who’d been glaring at him the entire time- she’d been the one to stick it out until the end this time, as your poker hand is been utter trash, but the way he looked at you had you suspecting something.

“Let’s settle this, Lex.” Purps says in resignation.

Two pair for Purps, three of a kind for Lex. He reveals them with a smile and a flourish.

“Fuck.” Purps replies. The old man’s luck holds yet again, it seems.

“So, Purps. What really happened at Rono Pass?” Lexington asks, tone making it clear that a previous deception was unappreciated. You recall hearing a bit about the place, yourself, but it hadn’t been much. Something about a dragon.

She seems kinda gunshy about the whole thing, though; whatever happened couldn’t have been all that great. “Really? Around the others?” She asks in disbelief, but the old man pulls out a book and quill from… did he have a storage plane ready to access at will? Huh. That’s uncommon as hell.

She just sighs, looks him in the eye, and begins, to the surprisingly rapt attention of everyone around. The girl’s not exactly the best storyteller, mind, but she gets everything across well enough.

The picture she paints might be bland in style, but it’s vivid in detail. This girl has been mind controlled, attacked by mercenaries, blasted through several walls and chased by wolfmen all in a single night. Not counting the fact Luc killed a merc (apparently the kid is one of those bullshit clock stoppers), or that the brainwashing made Honamurei sexually assault her, or that it’s what’s fucked with her libido so much. That’d be a rough day for even you, you wager.

Luc’s looking to be kinda right- trouble does seem to follow these ‘Starborn’. Wonder if it’s genetic?

MIRANDA

The city of Leno, as you finally approach it, is something you have to admit isn’t a bad looker. Reminds you of Tenibaum a little, only a bit more technological. You can see things like streetlights and various other small near-modern day inventions out and about- although you suspect they’re more fueled by magic than simple electricity.

This place is far more organized, and surprisingly hospitable, as well- you’d taken the outside watch as a precaution, but your group had easily been recognized and escorted in, as you arrived to...well, if not actual fanfare, a decent civilian’s welcoming- a few smattered clappings as people realized just who were inside these particular carriages, and why they’d been under strong guard since you’d approach the city limits.

“It’s good to have you here- the masses could use a bit of capable entertainment, and at the rate things are, we’re willing to take a bit of a risk, eh?” The armored lady in the front of the procession is speaking to Switchwick, who’d quickly taken outside position as you’d approached and presented herself- the guard lady had raised an eyebrow at you, but said nothing. “I’m sure you’ll find plenty to do here before your sets begin- we’ve more than a few diversions!”

“Well, that’s quite kind of you,” Switchwick offers, “but I’m sure you’ve been briefed on the, er, special conditions of my girls, so…”

“Right, right. Like I said, dangerous, but I suppose if you need to get away for a bit- or perhaps the lass up top. I take it she’s not a singer as well?” You glance down to meet the lady’s eyes; they’re largely curious more than anything.

“Oh, oh not at all,” Switchwich laughs. “She’s, ah, private security.”

“Ah. Prudent.” The knight nods at the declaration and says no more about it. “Well, for your understanding, the indoors theatre is where you’ll be performing- we’ve gotten all the general wards set up, and there’ll be a transparent barrier between the audience and the stage. You’re free to check it out early if you’d like- you’ll be staying at the inn you requested and rented out privately-” Wait, they rented out an ENTIRE inn? “-which is just down the street from us- you can see the top of it over the buildings now- the large domed structure.” Indeed, you can, a brilliant alabaster white that is easily one of the larger buildings in the vicinity. “Other areas are the Museum of Nobles, if you care for a bit of history, the Observatory, if any of your girls are scholarly, and the Temples of the Celestial Pantheon if you care to show your respects.”

“Well, it certainly sounds like there’s a few interesting places to visit,” Switchwick opines. “I’m a bit unsure if we’ll get any chances for such visits, all things considered, but thank you for the information.” The place did seem rather educated. Maybe you might be able to find out something else about your troubles here- or at the least, make certain nothing can get at the girls on-stage.

As you’re brought towards the back of the inn and quickly shuffled inside, you have to decide what you’re going to do. If you recall correctly, you’re actually a day early- tomorrow is dress rehearsal, with the day after being the play itself. It’s evening, however, so if you intend to do anything today, you’ll have to make it quick.

>Just stick with the girls for the night. You don’t want anyone else getting attacked in their sleep.
>See if you can’t talk with the city’s garrison about your ‘stalker problem’. Maybe they can investigate, or keep an eye out.
>Talk to Purps more about her Rono Pass event. There are some...questions you have after hearing that.

PURPS

This ruse of being a siren is tiring, but honestly - having all the people waving and applauding at you when you entered the city was nice. Even if it was under false pretences, having people react to you with excitement instead of wariness was… well a huge relief. It might be a nightmare having to follow Switchwick’s every minute whim, give up smoking temporarily and play the part of the demure new girl - but for this kind of response?

Singing and dancing isn’t so bad.

Leno though, what a city. The place is so… vertical. With all these spires, rooftops and balconies it’s like it was built for someone like you to go skipping through the roofs and disappear off into the night, to become some kind of, tragic thief vigilante out for revenge.

By Minerva, you shouldn’t have borrowed Pina’s reading material; her trashy romance is rubbing off on you. The girls are all abuzz at the new location too. Though Trisha is somewhat subdued and withdrawn due to a combination of hangover and embarrassment from her revelations, she still gushes to you about the theatre.
Outside of the girls and helping them with packing and crowd charming; the day has went pretty quickly. It’s already pre-evening and you’ve got some blissful seclusion. Despite not seeing much of Verde in in the unpacking and securing of the perimeters, you sensed some kind of weirdness there. You weren’t drunk enough to have done anything stupid and if you had, Lex would have magicked a bunch of reminders or taunts your way to rub it in. Maybe she just is disappointed she didn’t win more hands? She doesn’t seem the type.

The door opens, and your roommate arrives to let you know it’s dinner time.

You’ve been paired with Velth which means a lot of sitting in silence save for the occasional hum from the blind girl. Once you were both unpacked she lay in bed and started scratching away with a quill at a piece of paper. Well more stabbing than scratching, but blind people language is like that apparently, a nice comfortable silence stretching between you whilst you went about your business.

Praying.

Sunshine Fist Practice.

Reading the play again.

You noticed a little glow after the second hour of peace. Despite thriving so much on your adrenaline and feeling more human during those frantic, nerve shattering seconds where you dance the line of death and glory - this kind of tranquility always seems to calm your spirit in a way that tugs your lips up in a smile.

Minerva seems happy too, the short prayer updating her on your life was met with a little bit of amusement and a warm glow. You know, just sun things.

So when Velth came back from the bathroom with a scowl you knew things were about to turn for the worst, “What’s -”

“Visitors. Louuuuud.” She moans at you covering her ears and flopping on the bed.

“Who the hell would willingly visit a bunch of sirens?” You mutter to yourself, stepping out into the hall; where you see Loti and Mono both sticking their heads out of their room in confusion.

“Why it is a pleasure to have such..” Pina hesitates, “Noble visitors.” She sounds concerned.

“But I’m afraid the girls are not meeting anyone right now.” Jaqeline says nervously.

“Girls. Stop being rude.” Switchwick chides icily, “Don’t you know who these people are?” Even in her admonishment you hear reluctance and a little fear.

You stand at the top of the staircase, Verde is probably scowling right now eyeing up the guests. But the sirens in the room do not sound pleased. Who could it be? Leno is a rebel bastion, so even the garrison and merchants based here are likely aligned with them…

Switchwick has implied all sides are favourable to the girls, so what’s going on?

“Oh. I didn’t realise we had guests.” You say walking downstairs, keeping a hand close to your buzzsaw. Verde isn’t in the room. Bad sign number one.

A man is standing worryingly close to Jaqeline and Pina with the expression of a starved dog.

Bad sign number two.

A redheaded lady is reclining in a chair, her combat gear drinking in the light of the many candles lit in the inn’s common room. Her body language and her face contrast sharply, as sitting with her feet on the table and a handgun lazily pointed at Professor Switchwick - she still possesses a killer’s gaze and a face as expressive as a marble bust.

Well, that’s still bad sign number three, but you can sort of understand the urge.

Your fists clench as the lady’s yellow eyes regard you with cold fascination, “I see that these guests of ours aren’t exactly friendly.”

The man’s hand starts to creep to the small of his back as he turns to face you, Pina and Jaqeline backing away from him as slowly as they dare. “See, we asked your friends here if they knew, [THE PURPLE FIREFLY] and they were less than honest with us.”

“They didn’t lie. Nobody here has ever heard my title until now.” You clarify at the man, in a way clearly making your dislike of him clear. “I’m just Purps. Singer and bodyguard to them.”

“Purps isn’t ly-” Switchwick tries to settle things diplomatically, only to be silenced by the redheaded lady cocking back the pistol.

“Purps, our business here is simple; are you the same Purps who was contacted by Susan The Bounty Hunter?” The lady asks calmly, despite being set to blow your employer’s head off.

Your monosyllabic response is just as cold; “Yes.”

Even her associate seems to shirk at the glacial tone between the two of you, drawing his blade slightly out of its scabbard and drawing a whimper from Pina.

The redhead actually smiles a little, but it only increases her hostility rather than diffuse it, “If you would be so kind - could you tell me exactly what transpired between you two?” even with her low voice her demands carry the authority of command, “My orders say any means necessary and Dwight and myself have very many means available to us right now.”

Jeez, you gotta admit, sometimes you miss normal creature comforts on missions.

Like bathrooms. Bathrooms are great. You’re honestly surprised this place has plumbing, even with how respectable the buildings look. It’s one of those things you just don’t really...expect to be present in certain scenarios.

“-for you. That’s all.” Hm? As you step into the room, you see a strange woman, redheaded- and she’s tucking a gun away, in full view of Purps, Switchwick (who’s sweating up a storm), and a couple of the other girls. She’s got some guy besides her who’s got a knife She pats Purps on the cheek condescendingly with a smile on her face as you’re already planning out angles of attack and ways to keep Switchwick (and Purps, you guess) protected.

“There, see? That's all we needed. Enjoy your little concert tomorrow, break a leg!"

With that, she and her associate simply get up, and proceed to walk away in the other direction- they barely spare you a glance as they head out, and you’re left looking at a heavily breathing Switchwick and a Purps that looks like she just bit into the sourest lemon ever grown.

“This is what I get for going to the bathroom,” you mutter- and Switchwick jumps as she looks in your direction, still a bit frazzled, clearly.

You fix Switchwick with a frown, as Purps’ face loses the faint anger she’d had- which for her was probably blatant rage. “Who were they, and do I need to kill them?” You’re rather sick of having people and things put your primaries at risk, and it’s SERIOUSLY starting to piss you off. You don’t think you’re going to shake Sal’s angry voice in your ear for quite some time, and you’re NOT inclined to hear it again live any time soon.

“I-uh, what?” Switchwick seems confused, while Purps just hmms.

“They’re associated with the Rebels. Sounded like they were muscle.” Purps is unreadable yet again. “Wanted to ask me a question or two. That’s all.”

“And whatever it was, they figured they’d need a gun involved,” you note. “I don’t like that. So am I going to need to kill them?”

"Probably not. She was dick measuring." Yeah, well, that could go wrong in a number of ways. Still not a fan, and you snort a bit as Purps looks off in the direction the duo left. "If she does actually come for anyone, it'd be me. I'd appreciate you helping Honamurei get her revenge on the off chance she manages to off me permanently, though."

You look towards Switchwick- SHE was your client, not Purps. “Up to you, boss. If they're a threat to the security of you or your girls, I'll consider it as part of the package. No extra fees.”

She just kinda just shrugs shakily. “I-I’m no fan of getting threatened, sure, but I don’t think it’d be so easy- I get the feeling they’d be rather powerful, in more ways than one, and you...well, I’d just rather not.” Bah.

> “I don’t like the idea of keeping them around if there’s any possibility they’ll interfere with the job, but alright. It’s your problem then, Purps.” If she says so...
> “Fine, I’ll leave it alone for now. But if they come back, I’m killing them. No warning, no fanfare. I’m not in the mood to play timid.” And that's just that.

You fold your arms, in a very clear display of disapproval. You don’t like potential loose ends to be let free, but at the same time...bah. The look on Switchwick’s face has you wondering if she’s a bit more concerned than she lets on about your intentions, but you ignore it. “Alright. Fair enough. But if they show up again and have the gall to pull iron on you- or even just try anything I’d say represents a severe threat to the security of you or any other member of your troupe, then I will, without prior authorization or consultation with you, terminate them and anyone and everyone associated with them.” She actually looks surprised and concerned, and even Purps looks at you oddly, her face contorting very, very slightly into something you guess is probably confusion. “I understand your reluctance to start things, but the safety of my clients comes first. It if helps ease you, I’ll give them a warning first.” You shrug. You’d rather not, but whatever.

Switchwick seems hesitant to talk, but she does as you retreat back to the rooms. “I...beg your pardon, but are you CERTAIN you’re not overestimating your abilities there, a bit?”

“No.” You’re not. “If you wanted them dead, they’d be dead.” Purps doesn’t say anything, but you can tell her eyes are on you. “Let’s get back to the important things for now- like who’s taking first watch tonight.”

Damned if any would-be thugs are going to cause YOU any trouble. You’re already in hot enough water as it is- mercy is a thing you’re running awfully short on these days.

Does she have a section titled "Mass Killings"?
Does it have entries like:
The Nightmare of Solomon-3
- 703 confirmed crew killed
-- additional 1,280 via secondary effects
- 1 capital ship, 3 escorts
- 23 mechs
- 18 fighter craft

The Orseno Massacre
- 23 armed militia
- 117 civilians

Or is it just a list of various names she's acquired from her contracts:
The Butcher of Carennia
The Demon of the Morain Straits
The Pink Ranger of Hyperviolence

PURPS

You think you like this place, not the same way that Tinton felt like home - just superficially. The sirens have all taken to bed, but you’re on watch. So the back door has been locked and a table put in front of it - so that if anyone did manage to break in you’d be able to hear it.

Which left every entranceway covered by your current position; hanging upside down from the balcony in front of the inn, looking down at the sky above as the stars dance on the stage of Venura.

Huh, that was something.

But for now, you just need to watch the thieves hop from rooftop to rooftop as they go about their shifty business. Aside from a drunkard and a kid hired to put posters for the Sirens’ show tomorrow pre-evening, the silence has been total.

This city is wrong. The Rebels should have had to fight for every inch, yet there are no cracked buildings. There's no air of desperation brought out by a post siege populace.

Yet those rebels, so confident and willing to fire a shot in a crowded area of this bustling city; they owned this place and knew it. But how?

This was a rebel supporting city, it always has been after the sequence of corrupt governance. Even with the disapearing spree of the crazy old mayor, they surely couldn't have taken the city out from whatever Captain and Attendant are in charge; a city this large should have powerful guardians.

But no banners, no evidence of a high powered battle.

It's a mystery you'd like the answer to. But not one you have any avenue of investigation for. Certainty is something you rarely feel, but you're quite certain no loyalists would last a day here.

Your watch is uneventful; the only break the monotony of a silent night is when the blood starts rushing to your head. After your eyes lolled in your head three hours in you broke each hour up with a perimeter walk.

With the brisk air on your face, it was easier to stay awake through the night - enough that you decided to give Verde a little extra half hour resting. So you sat down and wrapped a cloak around you by the doorway, looking the bit of a homeless drunk.

But Verde arrived right on time to come and take her watch, “Nothing to report Boss.” You state simply; offering her the cloak. “It’s getting cold though.”

She gives a noncommittal grunt while taking the cloak, despite having never seen her sleep. Maybe she was particularly comfy. That professionalism of hers is impressive, even if you feel it gets in the way of her actually living.

By Minerva; you’re actually better at relaxing than someone.

It’s not exactly the best of times, but at the very least Purps seems to be somewhat attentive. You’re more or less expecting some type of ambush sooner than later- a creature like that wolfen girl probably wouldn’t be too intimidated by this place and all its people- the only concerns were when and how.

A quick scan around the perimeter shows little, but you still can’t help but be antsy. Years of work in this has got your hackles up. Then again, you might just be paranoid.

Hopefully Purps is at least doing a cursory check before she nods off. You’re not really looking forwards to anything worse happening so soon…

But, no reason for keeping those distractions in your head. As you settle in, you clear your head of any other thoughts, and concentrate on a more thorough search of the horizon.

(There's a good reason for this one too, don't worry.)

We should have our alarm Spell up and look through the FarSight's functions; maybe it can scan for magic signatures.

As you scan the horizon, you find yourself hard pressed to really make anything out- the moon, full though it might be, is in just the right position to cast a lot of dark shadows, and that makes spotting anything in particular difficult. There ARE a couple of tricks to it, however, and your experience makes that slightly easier.

Only slightly, though.

But it’s enough- you can see a figure shift against the moonlight- and it’s just agile enough for you to stand up and be on guard. You’re almost positive it saw you, and now that it’s on the move…

>You need to stay on guard and keep an eye on it from a distance- don’t risk any kind of bait.
>Pursue it- if it tries to assault anyone, you’ll be there before it can do anything.
>Alert Purps, and get you both on it- with the both of you searching it won’t be able to hide for long.

(Star is a bit indisposed, so I'll be heading things for a bit.)

Alert Purps and send her after it, while we scan it with the FarSight and stay here in case it's a distraction.
