‘There is no such thing as paranoia. Your worst fears can come true at any moment.’ Once returning to your… new home at the church, you decided to try and calm some of your nerves with some more sleep. It was probably a mistake knowing your track record, but you were tired from not only your almost non-existent sleep schedule but your more recent experiences. Killing some strange… plant… thing that ate people left you with many disturbing thoughts. What other monsters were more pronounced in their consumption of human energies? How many were probably even more dangerous than the one you just faced?

The sun shone brightly, no longer in the windows sight, but obviously the area outside the church to where you could easily see outside. It was probably the early afternoon. You feel as though you had enough sleep, and trek your way back into the main hall of the church.

Was today Sunday? There were few people milling about like the end of a service had happened a bit ago. Sure the place wasn’t packed but few people seemed to remain. Some young, some old, some chattering gossip you didn’t even bother to try and pick up, some held their head down in prayer in the pews.

You notice the priest, you probably should learn his name at some point, you are not particularly religious and it is getting a bit awkward to just call him Father at the time, finishing a chat with another.

“My son, it is good to see you.” The old graying blond says, a frown forming on his lips after seeing your state. “Is everything ok? You seem unwell.”

He must be referring to how tired you probably look from the unrest you have been suffering.

“I’ve just been having a few nightmares is all.” You don’t really specify, but you think he already gets the idea. You two can’t have one of these people who are probably not in the know hear about these things.

“Understandable. I have some tea if you’d like. Maybe some food as well? I’m sure it could calm your nerves.” Before you can refuse the potentially laced food your stomach answers for you with a loud grumble.

When was the last time you ate?

Despite your better judgment you decide to take the food from the priest. He leads you to another room which seems to be a mix of office and living space if the fold out mattress built into one of the dressers and the fridge and stove were any indication. The meal was rather simple, a sandwich and some tea, but it did its job.

“Is something bothering you my son?” the priest inquired.

“Sorry. I guess I feel a bit rude eating this meal without even knowing your name.” In truth you still didn’t trust this guy, well you didn’t trust anyone, but your hunger and desperation override your paranoia. For now.

“Ah yes, I guess we have yet to formally introduce ourselves.” He holds out his hand. “Henry Armand, but most people call me Father Armand.”

You cautiously take the hand. “Jack. Just Jack.”

“Well.” Father Armand says clapping his hands. “Now that we are properly acquainted and are in suitable privacy we can begin our discussion.”

“Discussion? About those monsters?”

“Well more than that, but yes, the monsters.” He begins. “While I can see that doing what I’ve used to do may have had a bit of an effect on you, and I normally wouldn’t be able to in good conscious as you to continue. I see a potential in you. So I will continue to ask for your continued support in protecting this city from its hidden menace.”

“I’ve already told you my answer. These monsters are a danger” to you “and I will continue to try and stop them.” So you can be safe from these wolves in sheep’s clothing.

“For that I am thankful my friend. I won’t be able to pay you much, but I will be able to give you a safe roof over your head and your belly filled.”

“Is that all you wanted to talk about?”

“No there is one more thing, some strange happenings have been going on around the park on the other end of the city at night lately. I think a monster is involved. I would like you to investigate it and put an end to it if it is what I fear.”

“Got it.”

“If you ever need anything within my power to defeat these creatures, just ask.”

“I found this cross necklace. Would it give me some kind of protection if it were fixed?” you say handing him the cross you found earlier.

Father Armand pulls out some glasses from his desk and closely inspects the neckwear. Humming to himself in concentration. “Possibly, I’ll look into it and try and get it repaired.”

“Thanks, whelp I’m off for now.” You grab your backpack, all but the necessities for tonight taken out and placed on your bed, leaving you with a relatively good amount of space in your back pack with your bible and bat sticking out of it.

You don’t have much money… but that hippie’s place probably won’t stop you from acquiring some salt and other supplies. Be a shame for it to go to waste. Also you have a nagging feeling about the death of that plant monster. It might be a good idea to make sure its dead. There is always other things around this cities shopping district that may be of use, maybe the pawn shop? You could just forgo it all and go to the park and try to figure out what you are dealing with, information is always useful, but you will only have your bat, your backpack, your bible, and your wits.

No point in letting the useful things rot at that hippy’s dump. You make your way to the store. The place might be relatively unpopular or just ignore because there doesn’t seem to be any investigation over the missing person within. Slipping inside the broken door you look around the place. Shelves lined with various foreign things and food, spices and knick knacks. The way leading to the back seems undisturbed.

You dig around the unorganized mess of boxes and shelves finding several jars of what seems to be salt. After a quick smell and taste of its contents you confirm its saltiness and place several of the jars into your backpack. Hopefully what they say about salt and magic is true…

Well what do you know, a perfect… an acceptable test subject right here. Taking pouring out a fist full of salt you begin to spread the substance all over the corpse of the monster. More for your own peace of mind than anything, but at it could be a good test. Once finished you noticed the liquid leaking spilling out of the monsters mouth, It was an acid, if the hissing and holes in the wooden floors were any indication. That might be of some use to you…

Your pockets are feeling light and no one else will probably need the money anymore. Plus father Armand said he wouldn’t be able to help you monetarily, maybe you could buy some equipment from that pawn shop you know of…

Sliding the cash register open you find a decent sum of $113.83 which you slip into your pocket. Honestly a bit more than you were expecting for a place like this. There seems to be a phone of some kind connected to the underside of the counter, probably for emergencies. Should you report the dead body? Who would you even call? The police right? What would you even tell them? A hippie was eaten by a plant?

You quickly snatch as much junk off the shelf as you can, you can look at it later but for now you need to hurry before anyone walks in on you taking this stuff. Slipping the last thing you can fit into your backpack you leave the store. Someone else can report the corpse, you have to leave.

You head into the tool store, making your way down the aisles looking for anything of interest. Most of the power tools and chainsaws seem to be a bit too rich for your blood, but there are plenty of hammers for less than $5 dollars. Sledge hammers are a more expensive at around $60 dollars, but there output could be helpful than your old bat… There are also several large nails each for about $.50 cents, their ends are a bit dull, but with the application of a hammer or some sharpening you could have something to help pin down things like Father Armand did.

Yeah you really don’t have much space for a sledge hammer at the moment, maybe another time. You grab several of the large nails and a mallet to use them with. Just as good as a hammer and the same price too. Checking out you are left with a good sum of a little over $100 dollars and armed with not only a two blunt weapon, but some piecing weapons if used right.

The sun hangs lower in the air as you leave. It is approaching the night, by the time you get to the park you need to go to it will probably be night time. Best be going now, it wouldn’t be a good to have to roam around the city at night any more than you have to.

The sun continues to set as you enter… Chinatown? You didn’t even realize this city had a Chinatown, then again you have never really had a reason to go farther than your side of towns shopping district when you rarely absolutely had to go there. The place seems relatively sparse of people, and few shop owners are open despite the street looking lighting up like a firework in the night. It looks like it’s supposed to have a large nightlife, but there is almost no one here… Is it the monster causing this?

You are brought out of your musings as you hear one of the nearby shop keepers yell out “OI YOU! You want to buy something!? This good stuff! Stuff you’ll need! I know it!”

The older… gentleman had a rather basic shop. It was simply a rickety looking table with various junk scattered on. Boxes piled up behind the man, most likely containing more of his ‘products’. You notice a small locked strong box within arm’s reach of the man, probably his makeshift register.

You walk up to the ‘shop’ but ignore the junk on the table for now. “Hey do you happen to know where everyone is?”

“I not here to chitty chat, you want buy something?”

“Well it’s just this seems like a place that would be more popular.” Maybe not this specific spot right here, but the streets seem a bit excessively bare, and there isn’t enough decay to suggest it’s been like this for a long time.

He gives you an annoyed look “You want buy something or not?”

The old man contemplates it for a few moments. “More customers? Yes, yes. I help you. What do you need to know?”

“I’ve been hearing about some strange things happening in the park at night. You know anything about it?”

“Yes. Strange. The park has been hounded by evil at nights. Evil I have seen before; Jiang Shi. They feast on the blood and spirit of living man.”

Spirit you can understand, but blood too? Are they some kind of vampire?

He also grabs a small pocket makeup mirror, their seems to be a small crack. “Jiang Shi cannot stand the sight of themselves. Seeing their face will hurt them.”

He pulls out a vial of a thick red liquid, blood like. “This will harm the Jiang Shi as well, ask not what it is.”

“I’ll take the dagger.” You hand over almost half your money to the strange oriental. Hopefully this wasn’t a scam but you really had nothing else to go on other than this old guy’s word.

Placing the dagger into your pocket you begin to leave.

“Customer friend! Before you go, won more thing. If you stay your breath the spirit will not be able to see you.”

You nod and begin continue to-

“Won more thing! Fire is their bane!”

“Thanks.” Now that that is over-

“Won more thing!” For fucks sake. “If you throw coins to its feet it will always bend down to count them.”

You wait for a moment to see if there is one more thing, but the man seems to be done, and you can finally continue your trek to the park with no more interruptions. As you wander through the streets you eventually find your way to the park, the moon hangs high above you and the man made lights in the park and the bright lights of Chinatown behind you are the only thing keeping everything visible. So this is where things have been happening, your hand settles itself near the hilt of your new dagger instinctively. Time to find a monster…

A proactive search might be better than waiting for the monster to get the drop on you. Keeping in eye out you begin to wander the park. If these monsters were Jiang Shi then they must have been sucking people dry to keep people out of this park. As you travel the cement path you begin to hear stomps of feet nearby. That definitely sounded strange.

You hide behind some nearby tree and peak out to see several people, arms straight out and hopping like mad. Their skin tones were… off. You counted at least 5 of them, were these the Jiang Shi? They didn’t seem to threatening. Then again you didn’t know what strengths they held hidden away.

You kick up the coins the monsters were counting, slowing the creatures down even further. Stabbing the next creature and downing it. The other two despite the interruption seem to be almost finished counting the coins. Most of the coins have been separated to the point where a single kick wouldn’t really do much anymore.

Stabbing the third of the bunch you quickly step back and try to make some distance. You end up halfway between where the tied up girl and the monsters, just in time too because they seem to have finished up counting their money, and don’t seem happy about the 3 of them you have just slain. Soon they begin to hope towards you. Not extremely frightening way of encroaching but still concerning none the less.

You take a deep breath and with it your bible and confidently read out the verse you bookmarked. Wind whips around you, and the power you give the words is palatable “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”

The monsters cringe and crumble under the pain, they don’t seem to be dead but they are finished for now. Was that really it? That was much easier than you thought it would be.

Proceeding to the downed two downed enemies you deliver two quick overhead strikes with your knife to finish them off. They will no longer be an issue. Now to free that woman-

A loud clap interrupts you, followed by another, and another. Turning your head you see the source, another woman? No… she is blue.

“Well done, kiddo, you beat my little minions.” The grass around her feat begin too dry and decay. “Sure I wasn’t much of a fan of those hopping idiots, but a few thousand more humans and they could have been like me you know, and it’s only been a bit lonely being at top of the food chain.” Her arms begin to morph and change, growing far beyond their regular size. Your hand is growing white from how hard you are gripping that dagger.

“I really wanted at least one of them to become something more you know? Like me.” Her fingers are like oversized butchers knives, almost as big as you. “So how are you going to make this up to poor lonely me?” You don’t respond.

“Strong silent type huh?” She taps her surprisingly nimble and bendable knife finger on her chin mockingly. “Or are you just terrified?”

“I can feel it, you know, that spiritual energy rolling off you in waves. All of that fear.” She licks her lips. “I wonder how much stronger I’ll get when I take it?”

It’s true. You are terrified… but you can still fight.

Fumbling out your bible you open to the earlier page you begin to stammer out the verse. Your former confidence reduced to a shadow of its original self with the sheer aura this girl is giving off. “W- uh when the unclean spirit-“

Only to be cut off by a firm sole of a shoe knocking the air out of your lungs and tossing you off your less than firm stance on the ground. Your grip somehow remained with your blade and book, but you were left on the ground gasping for air. She's fast. She had to have been almost 20 feet from you and you only barely looked away to start the verse.

“Aww, sorry kiddo, I am not really one for poetry.” She smirks. “I’m looking for more of a man of action.”

You are still trying to regain your lost breath as you scramble to your feet. A dull pain remains in your chest as you attempt to stand strong. Thankfully you don’t think she broke any ribs. You still are having trouble regaining your breathe but other than that you are fine.

Grabbing some of the cash you have in your wallet you quickly throw it at here to slow her down. Mostly just a few dollars seeing as you had used up all of your coinage earlier. She only stares at it impassively.

“What do you think I am some kind of worker of the night who will bend over for your filthy dollars?” Yeah, you probably should have remembered that it was COINS that made them bend over and not paper money. Did she really have to give you that imagery? It really wasn’t helping you feel any better now that you’re down another 20 or so bucks.

You dash to the girl knife at the ready and begin slicing and stabbing your heart out. It serves only to amuse the blue girl who nimbly dodges your strikes, before giving you a healthy stomach full of knee.

“Come on is this the best yo-“ she is interrupted by her own scream of pain as you drive the knife into her leg that attached to the knee planted in your stomach and twist as much as you can before a back hand sending you flying away from the girl.

Stumbling to the ground you are almost happy to hear her own screeches of pain and some strange hissing sound. Turning your head over to the woman you see that she is nursing her leg which seems to be… leaking? Not blood, but some kind of… mist or smoke of some kind. Is that the energy she has consumed?

You rise despite the stinging of your face and burning in your lungs and prepare for the next strike. Far more confident then you were before. If it bleeds, or leaks out energy, you can kill it. Right?

The words of that old man come back to you. That’s right she can’t see you if you hold your breath, hopefully. While she still is distracted by her own wound you begin to hold your breath and try to sneak around to a weak spot. Your lungs burn slightly from their earlier abuse but you hold strong and sneak your way to her back side.

You take the chance and stab her in the back causing her to cry out again and more of that mist to be released. Your victory is short lived as you feel a truck slam into you and you are sent into the air again before landing with a thump on the ground. Your body protests and you think something is broken, but you are alive. Unfortunately your body protests against any movement after that last strike you don’t think you can stand up.

“Thanks for teaching me a lesson kiddo.” The blue girls voice rings in your ear. “Never play with my food.” You hear her grunts of pain as she begins to limp towards you. She is going to kill you do something body. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO SOMETHING BODY!

“But I think at this point I think my food is finally broken.” You can die here. Not now. “And now I can finally enjoy it…” She is coming even closer.

Gripping your knife like it was your life line you wait until you hear the girl comes closer. “You know you are lucky that you have so much energy. I would have someone as annoying you earlier if they didn’t have this much energy.” Almost there… just a bit further…

“But now that I have broken your body, It is time to break your spirit. Or you know, consume it.” She speaks as if she was just talking about yesterdays lunch. Well, aside the pain clear in her voice.

“Now let’s-“ You knew she was a Chinese vampire… zombie… thing… so you expected her to go for your neck, and go for the neck she did. As did you. Contorting your body you jab the knife right into her own neck, despite being dull it slides into the monsters like butter. She tries to pull away but you attach yourself to her. More of the mist flying everywhere, especially in your face, it smells foul and causes you to cough relentlessly but you don’t want to lose your grip. Her struggles are in vain as you hold strong onto her until she slowly falls to the ground too like her minions, defeated.

You’ve done it. Somehow, you’ve won. You’d be more cheerful but you feel like you just ran through traffic. Struggling to your feet you look to the downed creature. Dark mist still wafting out of her person, the drying every plant it touched. Was this all the energy she stole? Was it corrupted somehow?

You don’t trust this monster to be dead. Not at all. You need to be 100% sure with this. Taking a position above her downed form you begin to stab every vital area you can think of over and over. Each strike you do releasing more and more black mist as you confirm your kill. After the 15th or so strike you feel like she is dead enough for your peace of mind.

If she lives through that you will honestly be surprised. Standing back up you still have to deal with the tied up woman and the money you have thrown everywhere. Maybe you could loot these creatures too…

A combination of the darkness that overtakes the park and the fact that everything hides amongst the grass you can only find half the cash you lost. About $11.45 bringing you up to $40.45. Nothing particularly useful looking is on the Jiang Shi as far as you can tell. Well you are at a net loss but at least you have your life.

Looking over to the woman she eyes you in shock and silence as you do your thing. Possibly hoping you don’t notice her in case you were going to kill her for seeing something she shouldn’t have.

She struggles a bit when you walk towards her but calms down when you place the dagger. “I’m going to untie you, ok?” She lets out a muffled grunt in acknowledgement. Probably should start with that. You remove the gag from her mouth, and she responds accordingly.

“You have… a lot of explaining to do.” You really don’t want to explain this to some random person who has no idea what is going on. Maybe you should just leave her here. It’s not like its bright enough for her to get a good enough look at your face.

“Do you want me to untie you or not?” You just want to go back to the church and lay down and sleep the pain away. You don’t care to explain everything to this random girl.

“But…”

“Trust me, it would be better for everyone if you just forget what you saw tonight.” You take out your sharpened half hedge clippers and begin to try and cut through the rope.

“But what were those things?”

“Jiang Shi if that old guy is to be believed.” Her hands are free and now you begin to work on freeing her legs.

“Old guy?”

“Really none of your business.” Doesn’t really help you don’t know that old weirdo’s name either, but he was helpful. Maybe you should pay his shop a visit sometime. Hopefully he has more than just Chinese monster solutions.

Once she is freed she rises to her feet, nursing where her hands were tied. “Seriously what’s going on?”

“That is not for me to tell you.” You try to sound cool and mysterious, but in retrospect you sound kind of stupid. At least it works long enough for you to limp away while she sits there still trying to comprehend what was even happening.

It’s gonna be a long walk home, but the victory would make it sweeter…

Who are you kidding you wish you had the money for a taxi right now.
