While it will hurt Mali initially, in the long term it will really help her grow, given that she now has proof that Alice was loved and not just some cattle to be sold when times are tough, and that she was never forgotten.

The king turned to her and smiled, before turning his attention to the images of girls flashing through the pool. They all lived very different lives and each one had the potential to be a powerful magical girl because of how they lived. Each one of their paths had some how installed them with a great sense of justice, loyalty or simple kindness in some way or another. And while his subjects gathered around in anticipation, the king watched emotionlessly, until he stuck his finger into the pool. The image stopped on an older looking girl, not quite an adult yet but close to it.

She was standing in a street, surrounded by monsters, staring in awe at a tv screen behind a glass screen. Her hair was long, and blood red hanging down to her back. Her skin was tanned from work and she lacked...certain womanly charms. Her eyes had innocence in them, and were as green and blue as the sea.

A strange puppy like thing tried to calm down the burning and ranting cow...plant...plushie thing? as the other five of her friends leaned to get a closer look.

In the reflection of the glass, they could see her once broken nose and the sad look behind her cheerful eyes.

"She...she is the one, the first to receive a new locket" the king said, holding his hand to the seven tiny things "Contractors, to me we shall decide which of you shall guide her and give her the locket democratically

Ya know, I heard that monsters had some really strange and powerful magic from that bastard I call my father, but I never knew they could trap people inside tiny boxes like this. I frown a bit, as I try to figure out why they're so calm in here with all of us giants out here. I know if I was that small I'd be terrified.

I lean closer, tapping on the glass trying to get any reaction from the tiny people inside this thing.

"Hey, don't tap on the glass! I just cleaned it" A monster with a snake like head hisses at me, freezing my heart like a pond in winter.

I try to explain myself, but I'm still not used to dealing with people like him, and end up just backing away and running like I was told to when I was a little girl. No dammit, monsters aren't bad! I don't have to be scared of them anymore

"Sorry!" I yell back, turning back around as the fear washes away from me in an instant, a confident grin on my face as the snake man looks at me oddly "I didn't know, I'll clean it if its any trouble"

"No?" He says as I try to avoid getting trampled by what I think might've been a troll in a dress "Just...don't touch, okay?"

"Understood" I say, saluting him as I turn to find my way back to the little apartment I've found myself in this city while I search for my little sister "but the offer still stands, just so ya know!"

"HEY, watch where you're going!?" A short thing with a bag over its head yells at me as I nearly step on it

You're probably right, but if and when they meet up it's going to suck for everyone, Mali might have a breakdown and several magical girls will get turned into candy. I really can't see that. Her memories are seriously distressing to Mali, if she would be confronted by her (former) family, she would bail or collapse into a crying wreck.
Its her daughters I would worry about in that situation.

It kind of feels hopeless, I mean sure I enjoy being in this city, I mean I didn't think the buildings here actually lived up to the name skyscraper, but they do. They didn't look that tall when I was outside of it, and now they loom over my head reminding me how much ground I have to cover. I'm just happy I can leave the entire noble quarter and that massive castle out of my search for now, since Alice never liked flashy stuff like that. So she has to be somewhere down here in the lower quarters, the slums that are almost like home. Unless she wanted to get away from anything like home?

I groan, rolling over my sandlike blanket, staring at the wet ceiling, watching the fan over my head lazily drift around a someone or something runs over the floor above my head, covering me in dust as the smell of the sea and the quiet yapping of waves join in the seemingly endless concert of sounds.

But that isn't what is keeping me awake. Its worry. for myself and my sister. I don't know how much longer I can live in this place, I hate the smell of fish and the only job I could find that didn't involve anything...nasty, was bringing it up big nets of the stuff. Sure I enjoyed the sea at first, it was a welcome sight from what I knew but...but then I saw the sirens and heard about what they did. And I got a cruel reminder than my father wasn't entirely wrong about all the crap he spewed constantly about the world...all those lies.

I sigh and sit up, the back of my neck itching from laying wrong on my pillow. Maybe I can find something to light a candle or find a flash light I can borrow. I can't sleep, because if I am having this much trouble here, alice must be having it worse and just the thought of that is making me sick with worry. Also it is too loud around here right now, I think there's a party of some kind upstairs but I can't be sure.

I mean, sure I was told that this part of the city isn't safe, but I walked from the farm here in the middle of the night so I'm pretty sure I'll be safe. Smiling I start to head towards the door without a lock and

"Hi" A soft, tiny voice says

I gasp, my heart stopping as I grab the nearest object, the remote to that television box thing and turn around, half expecting to see a big spider with a bag ready to snatch me up. Since people said a monster like that came down here every now and again.

Instead I see a pair of pink eyes glowing in the darkness. Wait...what? I tilt my head, frowning as I curiously but cautiously approach the small figure sitting on the window sill, letting in the warm sea air.

She's wearing a wide brimmed hat, and a long coat, as well as a bunch of belts wrapped around her tiny, child like body. I flip on the lights and she winces. What...kind of monster is she?

She has pink hair, and pointed ears and is the size of cat, with black hands pointed into slight claws and oversized boots.

Heh, I hadn't thought of that. Imagine Mali and Carol having diner with the in-laws, and the conversation somehow turns to talking about everyone's worst memories. I think being turned into candy and then nuked is a far kinder fate that whatever the fuck Vera and (I'd like to think) Mizuki would subject them to.

Working, the pain in my arms and legs is nothing to the pain I'm feeling in my face, the bruises feel like they have reached my bones, but I'm still working. The taste of warm milk is so dull after a days work, when it used to be sweet. A helping hand just means they'll get yelled at for stopping their own chores and work to help me. Fighting back just makes the pain worse...and running away was dangerous, but whatever I found out here would be better than back home Sure all this stuff I've seen in here is amazing, little people trapped in boxes and lights that actually work. So many people in one place and strange monsters but...its strange how little these things that gave me nightmares don't scare me. I got dulled to the pain from punishment and living all my life in fear has...eroded some of the wonder I feel. I can feel it. How quickly the fantastic becomes the mundane. I mean I'm already used to the fact magic exists and is used for basic stuff. Seeing what Sirens are really like was scary but its just a fact of life isn't it? And as exciting as things can be, they'll just turn mundane once the novelty wears off, like a doll you have to give up because you're too old.

I frown as I come back, my eyes painfully dry as Pink Holiday lets go of me

Mirrors sounds pretty interesting and it's not overly dramatic. Holds a bit of mystery.

I feel this is a very clear description of what it means, in combination with the text bit before that.

I pull it back up, it has a strange symbol like a three bladed fan inside of a circle sitting inside of it. Its a nasty, unnatural shade of green and feels warm than the rest of the locket. And its glowing like...no not like fire, it feels off. But I like it, its pretty, certainly prettier than anything else I have. Like my old clothes that are a little too small, or this dirty dust covered room I've been renting. Or those damn fish

I would see it more as energy in general.
It can be rockets, it can be boosting others, it can be fusing things. The magic types are pretty broad.
And then we have the option of getting additional ones, and what other upgrades we can get in-theme.
