It’s raining, and the pitter-patter on your windows is noisy.

You stare at your fridge, wondering what are you doing awake at 4 AM. Wearily, you close your eyes and feel the chilly air waft out to blast you in the face. Your arms and legs ache too much to fall asleep.

You’re hungry too.

This is terrible.

Everything is terrible.

Grabbing a carton of milk, you decide the best way to tide over the crushing pressure of existence within this limbo state is with cereal during the dead of night, particularly one that consists of dehydrated marshmallows that you exclusively—almost, actually—choose to pour into a bowl.

Kaori’s still sleeping—check.

Spoon—check.

Mouth—check.

You open your mouth, allowing yourself to surrender to yet another meal that you should not be having after today. Yesterday? It doesn’t matter. You pause in the middle of a mouthful. A noise from your balcony.

...It must be raining sideways.

Slowly, you resume your idle munching. You’ve made a mistake. There should’ve been more cereal with that one. The next one will strike the perfect balance. You raise it, staring intently. Yes... the ratio of marshmallow to cereal is spot on, golden, absolutely flawless... but the milk is off. Carefully, you rock the spoon back and forth, slowly and watchfully draining cow juice.

You give pause as you reconsider what you’re doing.

Without warning, the window to your balcony slides open and your class president steps inside, spottily soaked.

Kururi awkwardly looks around, her gaze drifting from the floor to the walls and then you. “H... Hi.”

Welp, this is it, you’ve lost your mind. You’re starting to see things now.

She stares at you.[/b ]
>You’re busy. Cereal comes first.
>She needs to go away. Like, right now.
>Offer a bowl. It’s only polite.
>If you don’t move, she can’t see you. That’s how it works, right?

If you don’t move, she can’t see you. That’s how it works, right?

So, you stay still. The perfect ratio is lost forever as the angled spoon slowly empties itself, milk lightly splashing and ruining your masterful tactic momentarily.

“I, um... er... I’m not sure how to say this?”

Don’t blink. That’s hard. Your eyes already feel like sinking back into their sockets without your help.

“...Katsuya?” Kururi steps closer. “Are you... are you okay?”

“I’m calling the police,” you reply.

Your home is compromised—it’s about as safe as living on the sidewalk with only the thin pages of yesterday’s newspaper separating you from the cold, cold world.

“No, no! Please!” she puts her hands in front of her, “I need your help.”

Baffled, you look at her, and then around your apartment. “What about the front door? I have one, you know that!?”

“I didn’t want anyone to see me coming to you...” Kururi says, “And... and I don’t know anyone else I can go to. I—I messed up, and I don’t even know where to begin—“

“Stop,” you put your hand up. “Do you know what time it is?”

“S-sorry, I know it’s late—”

“I don’t have time or energy for this,” you instantly shut her down.

She recoils.

You're a really cool dude, OP, and your characters are real cute.

You blink, and then notice that pain and tiredness isn’t doing wonders for you right now.

“First off: Sit. Calm down. Have some cereal. I'll get you a towel,” you say, getting up.

“I... I really shouldn’t stay for long.”

After a moment, you reemerge with a beautifully dry white piece of fluffy fabric that happens to be good that absorbing liquids, and you hand it to Kururi, who’s still standing at the balcony door.

You say, “Aren’t you going to step in?” You peak behind her, finding that she’s using a small barrier as an umbrella.

Hesitantly, she complies, lightly patting herself with the towel. Kururi starts to sit down, and then stops herself before she turns a chair unpleasantly wet.

“Why do you always get in suspicious situations, Kururi?“ You’re light-headed. You’re dreaming right now, right? “Tell me who you want me to beat up already."

“That’s not...!” she starts, and then stops herself. “That isn’t why I came here...”

“Lightly rough someone up?”

“...Convince someone to leave me alone. Just, convince.”

“By beating them up.”

“...”

You cross your arms. “I'm not promising I'll help you. I don't know if I even can help you. But whatever you've got to say, I'm listening.”

Kururi stares outside to the balcony. “I know we don’t really know each other, but... I don’t know who else to go to.” The rain is growing louder. “I like it here,” she says, “The cool breeze, the noise of city life, the kindness from everyone, and I don’t want to give it up.”

You rub your eyes. Did you mess up somewhere along the line? Maybe there wasn’t anything you could’ve done.

She says, “Remember when you helped me back then?”

“You’re making it seem like it’s been a lot longer than it really is.” What... what’s the word again? It’s on the tip of your tongue. It started with an s. Somber? No...

“It feels that way to me. It really does,” Kururi turns around, “I... I won’t bore you with my sob story, it doesn’t really matter anyways.”

“Says the person breaking down my door at 4 in the morning,” you say pointing your spoon at them.

“Condolences for your loss,” the girl says, walking forth. A long, steel chain is in her hands. You watch her pupils light up as her psi starts moving.

“I hope you two are paying for that. How quickly did you expect me to answer?” you say, sending out a psi field.

“Hand her over. We don’t have time for this.”

The other one says, “Yes, Master Itsumo is waiting. Don’t make us use force.”

Kururi stands behind you, stepping into a fighting stance. Guess she isn’t running. “...They’re branch families, too.”

You say, “What does that mean?”

The girl lashes out, a chain whipping through the air as you step out of the way, the box of cereal sent across the room. The chains stay in the air, twisting like a tendril.

“Nothing in particular,” Kururi replies.

“Kururi,” you say.

“What is it?”

“I don’t think they’re going to pay for the door. We need to get out of here.”

She glances at you. “The balcony.”

“I like having legs too.”

“Trust me, Katsuya.”

You trust her. Throwing up a barrier, you turn around and run for it, sweeping your cell phone off the table. She runs ahead, swinging the balcony door opeh. Kururi jumps up, landing on the railing with one foot, and jumps down. You feel your psi shudder as the chain slams into your barrier.

39/250 - ??? (???)

You climb onto the railing too, and step forward without pause. You do not land on a car, or cold, wet concrete. Instead, your feet touch psi and slowly beings to phase through.

“Hold on!” Kururi says, grabbing your hand. She pulls you forward, creating a staircase using multiple psi barriers. As your feet sinks in, you notice it’s still fluctuating, but its energy level is so ridiculously high that you wouldn’t have realized it in the first place.

You dial the police as you touch the ground, running away. A single drop of rainwater falls through your barrier.

The call goes through and before the calltaker could even ask what is your emergency, you say, “Home invasion, two people in some weird clothing just kicked down my door.” As fast as you can speak, you tell them your address alongside the fact that they’re using psi. The reply you get: a reminder that you can use your art in self-defense. You say that you have to go, and you hang up.

You stop a second after Kururi does twisting around again. You’re in the parking lot, the duo right after you. A steel chain comes flying out at Kururi. At the last moment, she tears a strip of loose bandage from your arm and floods it with her psi, swinging and deflecting it.

075/400 - Perfect Pitch (Rori Shiba)

Your psi flows forth, sending a ripple that goes across the links and causing it to wildly swing omnidirectionally until your attack reaches her hands—and the chain flies out the girl’s hands. She cries out, and you pull her weapon to your side. You turn to use Illusion on the boy, but—

He quickly closes the gap between you and him, poised to strike with his palms. You have barely enough time to react—

Grabbing the chain, you try to use it as a weapon.

[2]

Not only did you fail to compensate for the fact that the other end travels significantly slower than your hand, you also didn’t realize this thing was really, really heavy. You get to mull this fact over as he steps forth, his palm smashing into your barrier. The psi pops like a bubble. You take a step back, and he takes a bigger one forward. You clamp down on your jaw.

His palm strikes at your chest, winding you. Delayed by a fraction of a second, his psi follows through, a blow that is as strong and precise as his previous attack.

65/250 - ??? (Guy who just almost knocked you out)

You stumble back, and another one follows, landing on your chin. You fly back, crashing onto the ground. Groaning as you try to pick yourself up, you notice Kururi stepping between you two, cutting away at him. He catches every slash with his palm, deflecting them. With every hit, the sound of psi disintegrating fills the air.

Ducking out of the way, he grabs the chain by your feet and tosses it back to the girl. You stand up, your clothes completely soaked.

At least...

[95]

You got something out of it.

“Are you okay?” Kururi asks.

“I’m fine,” you lie.

You need to stall. You stagger as you take a deep breath. You’re a little messed up right now, but you can at least stay in there, can’t you? Of course you can.

Kururi lays on the attacks while the boy defends. In the back, you see the garbed girl whirl her chain around. She swings to attack—

[80]

And you block it with your barrier, condensing your psi. The chain arcs up into the air where it’s deflected, only to come back down at you two again. The other assailant steps toward you again, hoping to finish you off. You brace yourself, waiting for him to get close.

[30]

...Now!...?

He moves faster than you. Before you can even psi blast, he’s already going to land a solid hit. But Kururi lashes forth. Her psi stops flowing to the bandage, slackening it. It wraps around his right arm and stops it, and she charges it again and pulls back, jerking him backwards.

He spins and tries to land a palm strike, but Kururi sidesteps. Her shoulders turn, and her right elbow slams into his face. The boy wobbles back.

You shake your head.

They are just... on a whole other level right now.

The sound of sirens reaches your ears.

The girl stares at the boy, “What is that?”

“Law enforcement, I assume.”

“We should hurry, then—“

“No. Let’s leave.”

You let them squabble.

“We can’t leave with empty hands.”

“Better than to be unable to return at all, Inko. We can try again later.”

“And return to who? Where do you supposed Master Itsumo is?!”

“I don’t know, but we can ponder that later.”

The girl stares at her feet and grumbles. “I hope we did not just make a costly mistake.”

You stop them, “Is that it? What a great master, when you two are so weak you have to run away.”

“Quiet, you fool.”

The girl adds, “You best watch your mouth.”

You say, “Or what? Yeah, you better get out of here before we beat you two.” You find this is very hard to do convincingly when you’re out of breath and hurting all over.

Kururi whispers, “What are you doing?”

The boy pushes the girl along, “Ignore his taunts.”

“Let’s not give them a second chance,” you reply, “Stop them!”

She lingers for a second before running forth. The two briefly decide between taking the risk or running, and they opt for the latter. Kururi swings out with the bandage, and you press both of your hands onto the ground.

Don’t you have something to do tomorrow?

I liked this suggestion, but it's a bit off. Lenses can't make anything hotter than the source that's emitting the light. It would've been like a normal Perfect Pitch except slightly warm. Or slightly stronger, with Tempo.

I'm guessing Katsuya looks roughly how you feel.

>>
>>1505357
The reasoning was that an Illusion would presumably have to possess our Psi as some component or physical property in order for us to maintain the manipulation. Then, as the light travels, our Psi would also pass through the same space.

Or, to put it another way, our Psi could propagate through the air using the light of an Illusion as a carrier. Since Perfect Pitch specifies 'leaves pressure waves along its trail', I guessed that this might allow us to (almost) instantaneously deliver those pressure waves through the air to the limit of the range of our illusions.

I deleted the suggestion because a) I posted too late, and b) it probably isn't the sort of thing to test out at 4 in the morning in a residential area.
