MIRANDA
“Alright, so you’re okay with all of this?” you ask. You HAD kinda just dropped a major bombshell on her- you’d figured it be better to do it sooner than later.

“I’m certainly not OKAY with it,” Switchwick responds, looking at you askance. “But I understand the need for...secrecy and tact. I don’t like the idea that one of my own is potentially causing this- in fact I’m rather livid on the inside, at you for insinuating, and for myself at being forced to accept the possibility. But I’ll keep it to myself for now. Should you be proven wrong, however-” And her stare is an icy one. “I’ll be certain to give you QUITE the scathing review. I understand that for your sorts that’s a rather effective threat?”

It is. “It is. You have my word I do not make this statement lightly. However I DO feel it’s prudent to remind you that I make no specific claims at this time and this is merely a working theory. There are other possibilities at play.” You have to catch yourself speaking faster than normal a bit and force yourself to slow it down slightly. “I feel as though I’d be remiss in not mentioning the possibility so as to keep you cautious.”

She has the thinnest of expressions on her lips. “Hm. Very well. But-” Before you can say much else suddenly a purple blur blasts out of the treeline- instincts honed by years of combat already have you in front of Switchwick before your head processes that that’s Purps, and carrying an invalid. The kid.

PURPS

Verde starts shouting orders at Switchwick and the Sirens urging them to pack up and get a move on, whilst you just cradle Luc and head “home” without a word or a glance around.

Lexington wears nothing above the waist and even his lower body is simply clad in underclothes as he sticks his head out and sleepily looks around; immediately he looks at Luc and his eyes start glowing as he analyses exactly what’s going on. “Damnit, kid. Fuckin’ stupid...” He begins grumbling.

“Fix him.” You demand, one hand on his chest and pushing him inside away from the unfolding chaos of leaving preparations.

“Fix what?” Lexington indicates gesturing at his face, “His eyes and nose are bleeding because he’s pushed his enigma too far.”

“I don’t care. Fix. It.” you say pushing Luc into his arms and looking up at him, “Fix him or I am gone.”

“Look. Purps. Luc is fine. He’ll sleep for a few days judging by the strain on his brain.” You ignore his explanations and hop out of the wagon, you really hope that -

Seems like everyone save for Lexington is quick to get a move on after you start finally putting your foot down. If there was something out there stalking the kid, you don’t want them getting the chance to get anywhere NEAR close to him while he’s out of it- you and Purps might be skilled, but you’re not infallible, and you’re not taking any risks with another one. Fortunately, Switchwick seems to get the picture rather quickly, relaying orders and rather quickly helping tidy up as you march to make sure everyone’s on the same page of leaving the area ASAP.

The way she glanced back at you every now and again made you honestly kinda surprised- just a second ago she was looking at you with the steeliest of eyes, but now it’s almost like she was scared. Lady can’t seem to pick a temperament and stick with it. Purps is off with the old man, probably yelling at him, and you’re not inclined too much to get in between that so long as they’re ready to leave sooner than later.

Fortunately, the urgent nature of the situation seems to have spread to everyone else, and practically within minutes you’re packed up and on the road again. You give a quick look around to make sure nothing’s missing before you catch up with Purps’, who’s sitting still in the rear carriage- and near fuming, as far as you can tell. Her expression says little, but a simple look at her stiff body language, next to her girlfriend who seems to be trying to soothe her, says a lot. They’re both looking over the kid, who’s passed out, some dried blood still in his nostrils, but otherwise looking surprisingly peaceful. “How is he?”

“He’s pushed himself way too hard. He can usually manage two minutes before it gets bad, but this looks like he hit an hour.” Purps deadpans, throwing a pointed look at the old guy, “Maybe if he’d felt comfortable sticking around his home-”

Blondie steps between her and Lexington as the old man puffs up. You’re not sure what they’re referring to with the kid- nosebleeds, though, were usually some indication of psionic power or something akin to that. Telekinetic? Hm. Who knew. Either way, if they’re about to have it out…ah.

You take out your FarSight. You’d nearly forgotten to mention it in everything.

I wonder if Miranda has worked with others who combined an equivalent package of unreliability, unprofessional-ism, and very high power that she's having in Purps.
>>

Not quite on this scale. She's worked with people who have varying levels of all three, sure, but not quite this mix.

How do Purps' regular players feel seeing her from the outside?

As a Magical Girl for Hire regular, she is infuriating. Miranda's life depends on the successful completion of contracts and good customer reviews, so Purps not taking this seriously and just getting pissy about the job makes me want to just throw her off the contract, even if it makes the fights harder.

PURPS

“How about you get off your -” Verde cuts you off with nothing more than a hand on the arm and marches you outside, ever the voice of reason. Even though a part of you knows venting anymore frustration would result in being homeless, unemployed and fighting the oldest living starborn, the rest of you really wants to slaughter him for his inaction.

“Outside. Now.” Verde commands and you go along with her. “I’ve got information on that sword. Skipping the boring bits, it’s created by the wielder and bound to their lifeforce.”

“So it’s some kind of… summoned sword?” You ask, kicking the dirt to try and focus in, “I mean, shouldn’t it have broken when hitting us then? Most summoned stuff can’t take much force.”

“It says it’s indestructible, and will always be sharp.” Verde offers with a shrug as the carriage in front starts rolling onward. Both of you leap in unison and touch down on the roof with two slight thumps. The girls seem to be used to both of you doing this now, as nobody screams.
“Well...we were thinking one of the sirens might be involved; we’ve probably just been handed a way to prove that,” you realize wide eyed, “since it’s linked to their lifeforce. All we need is some magic sensing and seeing which matches the sword!” With a clap you turn and face Verde with a fierce glare, “We might be able to save them.”

“Sounds like a plan to me. Question now, is, if it is one of them, what do we do? If it were up to me, I’d probably just kill them and be done with it, admittedly, but I’m pretty certain Switchwick isn’t looking for that solution, so…”

“Hey, just where is the sword, anyway?” She suddenly asks out of the blue. You’re honestly kind of thrown by the sudden question, but before you can tell her off a bit about changing the subject, you realize it’s probably a decent question, actually. Although she might not really want to hear the answer…

“I had given it to Mr. Lexington to keep safe. He seemed the most reasonable choice.” Powerful guy, wasn’t actively involved in anything, non-obvious at first glance- it made sense at the time.

Purps’ face twitches. Not her eye, her entire FACE- as if something tweaked at all the various features of it in separate directions all at once. “I didn’t see it at any point this morning. Or when we were just there.” The way she says it makes you think she’s grossly trying to restrain her anger.

You have to admit, though, it makes you curious, too. “Then that means either someone took it or its owner died. I’d prefer to believe the latter, but I’m rarely THAT lucky.”

Purps looks genuinely insulted by this. “But we were on watches. How would it-”

Both of you reach the realization. “The smoke.” It’s eerie how you both spoke at the same time. You’re the one to continue, though. “He was smoking last I saw him. If he does that often, and in an enclosed area, then the phantom likely could find its way in and he’d never even realize. And if it was at night...augh. Damnit, I’m an idiot!”

“Why didn’t it kill him? Or Switchwick.” Purps says strangely amidst your temper. “His wards didn’t get triggered. So no attempt was made.”

“You think?” You have a hard time believing it- after all, your own traps could be bypassed if someone wasn’t standing on them, but apparently she was confident his were sterner (and more complex) stuff.

Then you remember. “So, how were we going to scan for this thing?”

She raises an eyebrow, “Can’t you do that? With your magic, or your little thing you used on the sword?”

Hm. Well, you could, but the accuracy might be off. Still, it’s a shot.

Based on that conversation, you expected her to meditate. Bring out the doo-dad. Do something arcaney.

She’s just kind of… sniffing the air. Looking rather irritated at it. “What are you doing?” You eventually ask after what feels like ten minutes spent on top of a carriage watching her smell the air.

“I’m sensing.” she growls out.

“This is you sensing magic?”

She spares an irritated glance at you, but only for a second. “Yes. Can you move? You stink.”

“I stink? But I have literally no magic.”

“I’m aware.” She doesn’t say anything else, however.

“So we just sit and wait until we arrive in Leno tonight? Maybe see if this thing takes a swing at one of us?” You offer, scratching your head in… well uselessness.

“Seeing as I can’t sense anything, that might have to be our best bet,” she grumbles out. “I HATE the idea; never was one to prefer the mark coming to me. But it’s the only recourse we have that doesn’t involve us going on a hunt that could last for days if we’re unlucky.” She appears to start to look angry, but after a second, it passes and her face returns to its normal passive hardness. “So...any ideas to pass the time?”

“We could just win all the money we could ever need off of Lexington.” you suggest, smirking mischievously whilst remembering both your own fortune at cards and your employer’s constant misfortune. “All you need is a poker face and maybe to show some skin if you’re really terrible.”

“I’m pretty good at poker faces,” she responds.

PURPS

Leno is fast approaching, probably within three hours if you took a guess. Pre-evening was quiet, and dinner went smoothly, albeit hushed. Verde, Lexington, Trish, and Switchwick have joined around a round and uneven table that the old wizard just made appear.

Honamurei graciously offered to keep an eye on the other sirens, which translates to: telling them all stories of her time as a guard and getting drunk. Doctor Lexington summons up a deck of cards like a roadside conman, preparing to shuffle until you raise your hand. “No, Trish should shuffle. The rest of us all have ways of cheating.”

“Are you implying I would cheat?” He responds, affronted enough to place a hand on his chest like some kind of diva.

Switchwick is the one who cuts in. “You always do.”

Well, that was icy. You’re beginning to get a slight inkli-

“So I’m dealer?” Trish says, physically vibrating in her seat in an effort not to fly around, shoot lightning or otherwise be disruptive. For her excitement, she’s managing decently.

“Just don’t forget to deal evenly,” Verde warns. “We don’t want anyone keeping cards off to the side.”

And now that the game is established, the stakes should be outlined. “I’ve just realised that we have one rich man surrounded by people… less well off.”

“We are not playing strip poker.” Switchwick interjects as Lexington brightens up at your comment.

“But playing with no stakes is boring.” Trish complains, as if she’d been told by her mother she’d be getting no dessert.

“Information?” you question. “You mean like Truth or Dare style?” You could see the logic in it, but did she have to be so...blatant?

Probably. Purps nods like she’s so sure of herself. “Sure. I think it’d be fun.”

Everyone seems to look at each other cautiously- eventually Trisha nods in agreement. “Sure, that might work!” That seems to set everyone else to accept the terms, and the cards are dealt out.

“Name of the game is Poker, then. Five-card draw, Aces high, Jokers in play.” At her declaration, you pick up your cards, and begin. If you do well enough, you might be able to squeeze some interesting information out of these people. If not, well...you’ll have to be careful in how you word your responses.

Now this is a pleasant surprise. You got yourself a nice nest egg of three tens and two nines. Full House is a pretty nice way to start the game off.

Good thing expressing is something you usually have to force yourself to do. Otherwise, you would miss the fact that Lexington looks like he’s going to set his cards on fire. Trisha smirks before adopting a blank expression so artificial that it looks painted on, and Switchwick just looks confused.

Does she even know how to play this game?

“I… check?” She says, tapping the table.

“Raise.” Verde says looking almost... bored? She seemed really invested in this before.

“I’ll match you.” You turn to your teammate.

“Folding.” Lex grumbles. Which suddenly makes Switchwick look concerned, did she seriously not know you could do that?

The next round comes, Trish backing out, with Switchwick looking frankly relieved to get out. Verde and you both stay in all the way; you’re feeling great. You got this.

You both drop your cards- your Full House...and she has four of a kind. Four Kings.
You don’t got this.

“Interesting way to start things off,” Verde notes as the rest gawk except for Switchwick. As for her question, though. She asked-

Something that’s been kinda bugging you. “That stuff you do. The weapons switching thing. How do you do that? And your flames? Last I recall, there was something about you not having any magic, but that seems pretty magic to me. So what’s the catalyst- do you just have to reshape it from the environment; some kind of druidic magic? Or do you have some sort of patron that you have to pray to for the ability and can’t do it at will, perse?”

“That’s a lot more than one question.” Purps replies lighting up a cigarette as everyone switches gaze to her, “I’m going to have to answer out of order and explain a bit. Get comfy.”

Frankly, you thought it was all one question, but if she wants to work it out like that, you suppose you can’t complain. You lean back and fix your eyes on her all the same.

“I am... less than a full person.” She sighs. “I’ve been slowly unravelling the ability to feel stuff again, but at first I was a total blank slate. Expressionless, emotionless, the works.” She exhales a cloud. “Then to now is night to day. But I’m still a pretty broken excuse for a person; I can only feel things one at a time, and whatever emotion out of my limited set then completely takes over me.”

“Oh, dear.” Switchwick has a hand to her mouth as she takes this in. “And here I had little idea.”

She shrugs. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it or anything. The weapon changes to whatever emotion I have. Mostly. The fire stuff is different enough that I think you need another question to earn that.”

“Fair enough.” you acknowledge. “Not sure I’d call you less than a full person, though. At least from my perspective.”

“Hope the whole night isn’t gonna be stories like this,” Lexington mutters. “Let’s have another hand, then!” You can agree with that much, and the cards are dealt out again.

PURPS

Purps 16, Lex 19, Trish 17, Switch 8

This time your cards aren’t so much amazing. But they’re good - Three of a kind, all Queens.

Trish meanwhile starts conspicuously vibrating so much that table is starting to bump every other second. Her professor audibly tuts and puts down her cards. “Folding.”

“Lexington?” You prompt studying his wrinkled and weathered face, old fart is hiding behind his beard and that gives you concerns.

“Raise.” He answers you pointedly, daring you to challenge him.

“Fold.” You say. Stick to the plan, fold early; analayse and then sweep. Same as always.

“Raising you again, Mr Lexington, sir!” Trisha says grinning.

“Let’s get into it then, ladies.” Verde says. Her poker face is pretty impressive, but she seems more eager than last time. Maybe she’s bluffing- after all if everyone saw her wipe you out they might not want to challenge her.

So long as she puts on a facade at least.

The cards are placed on the table. Trish is devastated to be pipped at the post by your master, despite slightly edging Verde. Wow, she’s tearing up.

“I knew my bad streak was just a glitch!” Lex laughs, his slightly drunken chuckle almost exactly him shouting. “HAR HAR HAR! And now I have two lovely ladies squirming under my immense -”

“Shut up and ask them, Boss.” You say, limiting yourself to chastising instead of slapping before pouring yourself more wine. Switchwick brought some good stuff.

“Well then, young Trisha.” He says taking off his glasses and wiping them down slowly, “Tell me your deepest darkest secret!” A softball, good natured. Thank Minerva - you expected him to -

“I slept with the twins at the same time!” Trish shouts her face as red as… yeah, you’re going to drink now.

“TRISHA!” Switchwick shouts.

She looks offended at her offense, “He asked me-”

Her Professor scowls in rage, “He was leading you into a joke answer-”

“What?” She hadn’t even considered him letting her off easy.

They bicker a lot.

Thus giving Lexington the privacy he needs to interrogate Verde. The rosy cheeks and drunken pretense disappears. “Where did you actually come from? Because your energy is not from any of the overlapping planes.”

“Mmmmmm…” It’s clear she’s not really fond of the idea of answering, but a small noise at the back of her throat precludes her response. “Elsewh-”

“Nah, none of that sideways talk,” Lexington interjects. “Answer me square.”

“Nggghhh…” Her face is still stone aside from a deep frown. “It’s outside. Everywhere.”

Lexington raises an eyebrow. “Everywhere? That’s a new one. Not much of an answer, though, so pardon me if I ask for details.”

Uggggh. Such is the price for going in with three low. You’d been gotten by Trisha’s triple high, but the shit eating grin Lexington had with that flush…

And now here he is trying to get you to spill more details about where you come from. It’s not exactly a horrible horrible secret, but for places with dimensional travel you tend to try to do your best to NOT spill where you hang out.

Still, the look the man’s giving you now is less than playful, and Purps seems to be giving you no help whatsoever. You really shouldn’t have been surprised- you’d dodged the question once before, and it seems that’s finally caught up with you. Well...maybe you can phrase it just so.

“It’s...outside of space. Call it that. It’s not a plane, I mean. It’s a place INSIDE the place outside of planes. Or dimensions. Anywhere, really.” Damned cards. “Like I said. I’m not from here.”

Lexington cocks an eyebrow. “That exists? Huh. Old as I am and here I thought I’d heard just about everything.” You’re kind of surprised he’s not saying anything more about it, but no, he just leans back, cigarette in his hand. “Well, then…”

“OH WHOOPS I HAVE TO DEAL THE NEXT HAND.” Suddenly comes out of nowhere as Trisha grabs the deck, pointedly not looking at Switchwick who has a very displeased glare on her face.

“Fold.” Is the name of the game, as everyone before you decides this just isn’t worth it.

Okay, you’ve sat back last round, time for you to go on the offensive. “Well then, Trish. I’m in.” You tease, trying to force a seductive smile. “Are you going to come play?”

She blushes and looks away from you when she says, “Call.”

You don’t break you eye contact, making her fidget nervously as the cards come out. She did not like those at all, but it was right up your alley. “Trish, you know if you fold, I might ask you a nicer question.”

“You’re just bluffing!” She accuses slamming a hand on the table and forcing everyone to grab their wine cups. You take the opportunity to drink long and deep.

“Well, then.” You say, dropping your cards, enjoying the look of defeat in her eyes. “Show me yours.”

She is pretty fun to tease, honestly. And this wine is strong.

“You’re mean.” She pouts dropping her… quite bad hand honestly. Two Pair.

“Well, looks like you’re all mine.” You purr. Well you tried to purr but it’s coming across more of a slur. Wine’s good.

“Okay just ask the question.” Trisha huffs, only stopped from crossing her arms over her chest by you darting out and taking them in your own.

Lexington snickers, whilst Verde and Switchwick looks less than please, “Now now, sometimes the buildup can be fun.” You chide.

The girl catches her hands out of your light grip so sharply she nearly topples her chair, to the uproarious laughter of your master and her professor. “Now then, if you were going to dirty talk Verde here. What would you say?”

You drain your cup, while chaos erupts.

“EXCUSE ME?” Verde, Switchwick and Trisha all demand.

Meanwhile Lexington just holds his sides, shaking in tears of laughter.

“You all heard me. Seduce Verde.” You demand, slamming your now empty wine cup down and refilling yet again.

“Well… uh.” She begins and you kind of wave you hand imperiously, “Hey there….um sweet thing.” She awkwardly stammers, “I’d like to uhhhh.”

“Trish…” Verde tries to interject,

“I’d take you home and make you moan all night!” She demands, slamming her palms on the table and sending a little jolt of electricity up your hands. “And when I’m done with you, you’ll be begging for another chance at lie down and -”

“That’s quite enough.” Switchwick interjects strongly. You suspect the red in her cheeks is only partly due to intoxication. “Deal the next hand please Trisha.” She orders.

“That was a bit of a waste of a hand.” Verde complains, her eyes rather than words revealing her distaste for that bet.

“That’s just your opinion!” You say louder than you meant, honestly montones slurred is kind of… infernally sounding.
