/qst/ - Quests

In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

+Planet: Karn Dereg
+Location: Morhankar, Capital City
+Population: 150 million
We suspect that there are around 300 death cults operating in Morhankar alone. Their total memberships is a little over 2 million people, however this includes servants, retired members, lower ranked attendants, initiates, children, followers and hangers on. Most likely less than a 100 thousand of them are real assassins, while it is hard to say. Yes, milord. This city has ONLY a hundred thousand crazed, fanatical, often augmented or drugged up killing machines roaming it's streets, searching for their next kill. One of the absolutely wonderful things about Karn Dereg is it's rules. As assassins are growing too many and sanctioned targets are growing too few, new rules are added on top of the old ones, sometimes bizzare, sometimes obscure, sometimes incomprehensible. The purpose of these rules is simple - the slow ones, the stupid ones or the unlucky ones will break them. And at sunset, priest will nail the list of legitimate targets on the door of his parish. By the morning, none of those names will belong to living people. Welcome to the Karn Dereg, milord. Welcome to the Planet of Blades, enjoy your stay, but thread carefully.

+Situation+
You are currently on Karn Dereg. You have managed to find out the location Tyrel Hagen, Lord Admiral of the Imperial Navy, who has gone missing over a year ago from right under your nose. He seems to be guarded by a death cult. Here's a summary of the information that you managed to get from ex-arbiter mercenaries operating in the area:

>So here's the situation. There's a Death Cult that we've got operating on the east side of Morhankar. One of many, but this one's really nasty. Semi-legal, female-only membership, well-financed, the bitches call themselves Cult of Mourning. Around two-three thousand members, a couple hundred of them are really good, even by Karnish standards. Mourners have a nasty habit of cutting up their victims into chunks, stuffing them into pressurised containers and then unloading the gore among masses of pilgrims. Allegedly showing people how close death is to them, helps the pilgrims to keep their piety. But not their breakfast, I guess. Anyway, so this cult was pretty active recently, but as they targeted only sanctioned targets, nobody really took any actions against them. But then about half a year ago, they ceased all operations and retreated into their temples. The rumour is, someone hired them. ALL OF THEM.
>This is unprecedented. Very rarely whole cults get mobilised and even then, it's usually the government or some big bad Inquisitor. Me and my mates here are in business of trading information, so we thought this could prove valuable to someone... We started digging, found something and it turns out we were right. This recording is less than two weeks old and I guarantee you that he's still alive. They've had him for more than half a year now, essentially the whole cult is used to cover his movements and protect him. We managed to catch him on tape as they were moving him from the asylum to one of their temples, but it was a close call, Mourners are very vigilant. His name is Tyrel Hagen, I wasn't able to get too much info on him, but it seems that he's important, has connections in the Navy and one of my friends in Ecclesiarchy mentioned him in connection with the bloody Astartes themselves.

You know the location of the last temple where Hagen was seen.

What do you want to do?

>>1486791
They are branching out, but usually planets that don't have official death cults already, have problems with changing their law system to accommodate them. Though a word from Astartes would help if you would like to take up this cause at some point.
>>
>>1486820
>What do you want to do?
I think we should go to the Temple and confront them. There are two possibilities:

1) Hagen hired them himself in which case he can tell them that we're his friend and we'll be allowed to see him.
or
2) They've taken Hagen against his will, in which case we won't be allowed to see him and then we can just engage the cult.

Thoughts guys?
>>
>>1486840
I like the "let's just knock and say hello" idea.
>>
>>1486820
Hire the Ex-Arbites, for live
swear him to secrecy, tell him we are Astartes
use his cyberdog to find the threshold of detecting the revenants, distance, smell etc. maybe even find counters
after that
infiltrate the temple
>>
>>1486840
>>1486842

To add, CM should go in a big cloak and hood so anyone observing the cult can't see we're a space marine.

Don't wanna blow Hagen's cover, the cult might tell us to piss off if we're too obvious.
>>
>>1486849
I also like having people with dogs around.

>>1486852
Sending them a friendly message before we go there might be a good idea.

>Sending them a friendly message before we go there might be a good idea.
maaaaaaaaaaaaaybbbe

i dislike the idea, but if you do, it might help to use their religious ideas, we are the angels of death, sons of the emperor, they might react to that positively

Ex-Arbiter looks at Xyptus, thinking something, but his eyes are hidden under the visor.
>Ok, so you want to hire me for some big scary guys that you can't talk about until I sign the contract. And you want my dog and possibly my guys to roll with me as well. But I barely met you and for some reason I seriously suspect that your name is not Publius. Let's play a game then. I will tell you a story that I heard once and you will tell me what would you do in the shoes of that man. So once upon a time a group of arbiters was sent down into the underhive, your usual raid, dangerous, but nothing special. Usually arbiters were lucky and nothing happened. But this time their fortune turned to shit. They were sent to kill something unnatural, something so bad, that even underhivers had no name for it. Remember, these were tough guys, years of experience, jaded as fuck, their balls were clanking miles around when they walked. Half of their group was ripped to shreds within a minute. But they had a sergeant, who knew the place where they were ambushed and he knew that nearby was a seldom used emergency Mechanicum maintenance elevator going into the upper levels. There was one problem though, it was small. One of them would have to be left down there with the beast. Whom to leave? One of his men had a child, but was a drinker. The other one was straight as an arrow, as a matter of fact saved sergeant's life once, but loved killing and would torture suspects for the sake of it. Third one was a son of a rich merchant, not saving him would make the sergeant eat shit for the rest of his career. The last guy was a former underhiver, damn quick runner, he was probably the only one who would stand a chance to escape if left on his own. What would you do in the sergeants place? Whom would you leave?
Mercenary takes a shot and looks intently at you.
>>

I would assume that Revenants are at the temple. However as anon (which I suspect to be Brother Salt) has rolled without discussing it with others and Xyptus, while secondary character, can be quite important to the story, it is possible to sacrifice a Fate Point to save him if you would wish so, as his fate is tied to that of Chapter Master.
>>
>>1487315

It is I, Brother Salt. However I thought that due to the fact it stated, Roll. Rolls were the only outcome. If there is more then just that, Then I have fucked up somewhere and should't have rolled. Or the others should've had the chance to present there options first and foremost and if it got more votes. To go with that.
>>
>>1487337
The problem with that is of course that if you roll first and THEN we decide we can decide based on the role, which is an unfair advantage.
Not that I'm saying that the situation was handled well, just saying you kinda forced the hand there since we could have either have said no now that we knew it wouldn't end well or gotten a reroll... so yeah, shit.

I might have taken the result too quickly, but it was only 1/3 of the chance of a secondary character dying. For the purpose of this quest moving along I do often take first post, there's been plenty of precedent for that, if I cherry pick posts, I have to have a good reason for that. And after the roll has been made, it was almost guaranteed that you would not want to play the roulette, meaning that meta-game knowledge affected character's decision. I am sorry about Xyptus, he was a good man, but he took a risk and luck didn't smile upon him. If he is important to you, you can change the Fate, but that's about it.
>>1487337
You are not at fault, Brother Salt. Dice didn't roll your way, but if it would have rolled fine, everyone would have laughed and would have soon forgotten this incident. However your decisions bear real consequences, that's the price you pay for freedom. I would advise you next time to discuss things with your friends, but nothing really horrible happened, Chapter is still there, mission wasn't failed, the war continues.

You can use this opportunity to kill them all easily by inviting them to a prepared kill alley or you can take up their offer and have them as your followers.

As you enter inner sanctum of the assassin's temple, you feel the gaze of hundreds of women looking at your manly, naked form. While you are covered by the robe that you borrowed from one of the nearby houses before coming here(there was not time to return to Strike Cruiser!), it is ill-fitting your Astartes physique and your features protrude in various explicit ways. However it is clear that you are unarmed and cultists allow you to pass, though you are not sure whether they are more admiring or fearful of you. On the way you are scanned and probed by two servitors, also reformed former female heretics. After you are declared safe (or at least as safe as a genetically engineered living weapon can be), you are allowed into a room where you find Tyrel standing in front of a mirror, his face looking sickly, his hair seems to have gained a few extra shades of grey since you've last seen him.

I get it guys. But you do realise, that in some situations I will have to ask for rolls, such as these. If you like Xyptus as a character, you have the way to get him back, that's what Fate Points are for - to protect you from bad rolls, use them. Please note that unless you state that you want to save him this session, you will not be able to change this event next time we play. On the other hand if you didn't care about him much, it is definitely possible (while not easy), to replace him.

Also, specifically for hinaught - presence of revenants wouldn't make a difference, because this was Xyptus' decision, he put the gun to his head himself. Even if we assume that they were there, what could they do? He wanted to gain the trust of those mercenaries.

>Well, dear friend... I would say that it is good to see you, but actually I think your arrival might be the thing that hasten my demise. Maybe I am paranoid, but I suspect that he arrived to Karn Dereg a few days ago. He would have found me anyway, but it would be stupid not use the opportunity and follow you. And I suspect, that he did. You see, I think... I think they sent an Imperial Assassin after me. I am already dead, Chapter Master.

They would not let him kill himself, i would expect that much if they are under order to protect him
Yes that does include suicide

Not every dumb risk is suicide.
Just dumb.

Dispatch of an Imperial assassin is supposed to require approval by the High Lords of Terra. So, Admiral, what did you do?

He chances 1/3 death for the trust of a handful of hive mercenaries?
Does he not understand priorities and relative values?
Was Xyptus retarded all along?

Motherfucker we gave Hagen a PISTOL for his birthday.

"Leave it for now." Smile. "Why don't you fill me in on what's happened?"

Be on guard.
>>
>Oh, my bad, I got confused. But yes, I do have it with me.

+++

>Well... I have to be honest with you, [redacted]. I have messed up. I know that you might decide to execute me on the spot for this, but please, hear me out. I have... Well, I've been using my position as the Lord Admiral for not exactly legal purposes. I do happen to have a few well placed spies that have warned me of something moving in the shadows behind the stage of Sector politics. Something that pulls the strings of puppets that dance or even cuts them, when it suits them. Though I didn't realise how deep the grox hole went... I have started intercepting Epsilon level transmissions from a very interesting source that I suspected for some time of having something to do with this. There was a problem though. It went higher than I expected. Much higher. And they know. That's what I think my ruined birthday party was about. They thought they could get rid of me quickly. I wanted to speak with you about this, maybe ask for your protection, but that was not to happen... I went into hiding, delegated all of my duties to my subordinates... I hoped that would be enough. But I don't think so. They really want me dead. I feel almost honoured in some sense, but I captured attention of some very powerful people that you never want to mess with. Let's make a deal, my friend. Help me survive this and I will be in your eternal debt. I'll share the information I intercepted and you can decide yourself what you want to do with it... It's too much for me to handle. Will you help me?
>>

>That's what I thought as well at first... But I hope you understand that I can't really get into detail while my life is at stake. Please, eliminate the assassin and then we'll talk.
>>
>>1514515
We obviously won't refuse, I mean, having an admiral as a friend is nice, but having an admiral who owes you his life as a friend is nicer.
>>
>>1514274
Xyptus not only manages to defuse the situation, but he also convinces ex-Arbitres to serve you faithfully, if you would find use for their squad.
>>
>>1514515
First things first. Give Hagen our shield ring.

"Here. Put this on."

Have the Revenants start sweeping the surrounding area. Start landing Captain Kay and his marines of the 7th Company discretely aboard standard lighters to assist.

>>1514535
They might come in useful. Do they have any contacts that might know about what comes and goes? Any unusual people entered the planet? Any sale of rare and expensive weapons recently?
>>
>>1514549
>>1514535
Do we take him with us?
>>
>>1514593
I think stay in the temple for now while the surroundings are secured no?

I'd suggest for the extraction, have a land speeder zoom down, bundle Hagen into the passenger seat and send it up into the sky to land in a thunderhawk, and from there up to the strike cruiser.

Even if the assassin gets a shot off at Hagen or the speeder, the field ring should stop it.
>>
>>1514607
Can we ensure that the Thunderhawk won't have an accident on the way up?
>>
>>1514611
Only if you have an idea on what kind of assassin is coming.
>>
>>1514611
If the assassin has a surface to air missile in their armoury I'm at a loss on what to do.
>>
>>1514628
Shouldn't thunderhawks have defensive measures?
If not, we could always send more than one, how about 3 that take off in different directions?
>>
>>1514639
The thunderhawks aren't landing. They hover in atmosphere, deploy the land speeder, then the land speeder (now with hagen inside) flies back up into the thunderhawk.

Which then goes to the strike cruiser.

Haveing multiple thunderhawks in the sky can't hurt though.
>>
>>1514646
And multiple landspeeders?
Can we use our new arbite-friends as decoys?
>>
>>1514672
Pax Sepulchrum has 2 landspeeders on board. I dunno if the arbites will be cool with acting as decoys though. We could use an appropriately sized chapter serf though.
>>
>>1514680
>I dunno if the arbites will be cool with acting as decoys though. We could use an appropriately sized chapter serf though.
Arbites should have higher chances of survival and we just got their loyalty with a FP.

>Thank you... While I may not be of noble birth, I will remember that you stood by me when it mattered. I was going to ask you... Would you mind if the Sector Fleet would operate temporarily from that wonderful fortress of yours? To be honest there are not many places where I would feel safe in the Sector just now. I will make sure your Chapter is reimbursed for any expenses. And could I take some of these sisters with us? I have hired the whole death cult for a year, so they are mine for now, why waste them..?

+++

What is your action plan?
1. Short term (how to get him off planet or secure him on Karn Dereg?)
2. Long term - where do you which to send him?
Also please provide details.

+++

You now have a special mercenary unit at your disposal:

Nickname: Punisher squad (you can rename them if you wish)
Leader: Sgt. Verhoff
4 Arbiters
1 Cyberdog

You can reinforce this squad as follows before they leave Karn Dereg using Verhoff's contacts:
1W = +3 Arbiters
2W = +6 Arbiters +1 cyberdog
3W = +10 Arbiters +2 cyberdogs +Skullprobe
5W = All Arbiters will have bolt pistols instead of standard handguns

Reo Hestrom, once he learns that you have hired other people from Arbiter background, wants to join them, he would become their second in command.

This squad is well armoured and trained by human standards, might be very useful for close contact operations where you don't want marine presence to be noticed. These men are very versatile - a good mix of brain and muscle, they can do everything from combat or arrests to spying or sabotage.

Verhoff contacts you over the vox:
>I asked around about the things you mentioned. Yes, recently a pilgrim ship arrived. I know the dockmaster, he was willing to share some information...

Let's do both of these, get our own little Judge Dredd squad.

"Sounds acceptable. Can you be one hundred percent sure of the loyalty of all the cultists? If so, a few bodyguards couldn't hurt. Though I'm sure you have other motivations for bringing them along." Wink wink firm butts tight abs.

>1. Short term (how to get him off planet or secure him on Karn Dereg?)

Secure the surrounded area with revenants and 7th Company muhreens.
Give Hagen the shield digi-ring.
Have several thunderhawks from Pax Sepulchrum hover in atmosphere, as high above us as a landspeeder can manage.
Deploy 2 land speeders from said Thunderhawks.
When the land speeders arrive, bundle Hagen into one of them, and a volunteer death cultist into another (put both Hagen and the cultist in big coats or something so they look the same).
The land speeders zoom back up to random thunderhawks, which take them to the Pax Sepulchrum.

If the assassin has revealed their location during all this, surround and apprehend (if possible, otherwise kill).

Pack troops up (with his chosen cultist bodyguards). Fly away. Back in time for tea. Get the dirt from Hagen.

>2. Long term - where do you which to send him?

Drop him off at the Tombstone with his bodyguards before heading to Sictix (Mormark is on the way) to meet Lord Inquisitor Garant.

I'll give it a crack haven't written in fucking weeks Go ahead and edit out any discrepancies cause I forget stufs

A faint blue vapor drifted through the air, the irritatingly sweet smell of the local Lho Brand wafting through. The bar filled with the sounds of daily life. The meaty claps as men fresh from work cheer on the scantily clad entertainment, serving girls expertly glide across the floor their heels clicking a constant rhythm, the shifting of glass and ice, the chatter of hivers wondering about new taxes, gangers skulking in a corner whispering news and rumor. All sounds barely perceptible over the hungry screams of men and women shouting at the fighters in the corner, barely perceptible to the common man, however.

Xyptus is no such man.

Decades upon decades of work in this business has trained his senses to a point where he's easily able to pick out the details surrounding him even as he stares at the man seated across from him. The sound of a man slammed onto a table, the bartender requesting more Amasec from his young assistant, the gangers arranging a hit on a local nuisance. All useful information. A new set of arms and legs to protect his Lord's interest. A relatively undiscovered resource of powerful local brew, a potential franchise in the making. A bit of information that can drastically shift the politics of this area if used correctly. Xyptus' mind races as a veritable maelstrom of plans and moves are conjured within his head. Bribes, a show of force, honeyed words, and broken bones. The tools of his trade honed over the years in service of his Employers.

His scheming briefly broken as the imperceptible sound of a weapon being loaded brings his focus crashing upon the man in front of him. The Ex-Arbite by the name of Argus cocks an antique weapon, the large barrel matched by the several large cylinders of the firearm and it's corresponding barrels. The arbite's face is obscured, the signature Cyclopean visor of Morhankar Arbites instead replaced by a pair of dark shades, his mouth tight, his body relaxed as his snuffs out his Lho stick, the blue embers dying down quickly.

"I trust you know how to play this game." His voice carries a hard-edge to it, his face marked by a signature cross-shaped scar on both cheeks, the reward of his service to Morhankar. It was a simple matter to learn of his dealings with Urien's Crux, one of the larger gangs plaguing the City. More useful information. Grudges carefully weighed, retribution applied in full, favors reaped on masse.

Xyptus takes the antique bolt pistol from the man, the weight of it calling the dregs of his past life to surface. The smell of sulfur fills his nostrils, the taste of blood on his tongue, the passion of another's body on his own, the warmth of true camaraderie forged in struggles, the ashes he had to scatter to the wind, the phantom pains of the past ache and moan

How long has he truly been at this? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? How long since he has become Xyptus? How long since he lived under his true name? Time becomes less and less valuable of a resource to him as it is to those he serves. Those titans of men. Flesh and Ceramite. The indomitable fortresses of Faith and Loyalty known as the Ghosts of Retribution. There are few things that surprise him. He has seen ancient houses fall and rise with a flick of the wrist and barely an ounce of ink, he has seen rituals that would shock and confuse any into inaction, the basest depravities that he exposes and provides with equal measure. But, to receive an invitation by the Chapter Master himself, to see the vaulted halls of their Fortress Monastery, to personally witness the Brothers engage in Battle? Their movements almost alien to him, their reflexes putting his own to shame time and time again

A smile graces the face of the man known as Pubilus

"A game of luck?" He asks.

"Luck? Misfortune? Fate?" Argus shrugs. "It's all the same."

"Is that so?" Pubilus' ponders out loud. He holds the pistol to his head. Argus remains the same, how many times has he seen this in his line of work? False bravado? Wasted talent? Sheer stupidity? More than enough for a lifetime.

it isn't until he notices the man's finger begin to move that he tenses. The explosive sound of the antique once more shatters the atmosphere of the bar. The newcomers unaccustomed to the violence of the area, still on edge from the earlier activity scream and shout, bolting to the door. The scheming gangers simultaneously reach for their weapons, the bartender pushes his assistant to the floor, the tall, broad shoulder boy barely of ten but clearly benefiting from his father's genes, the fighters knock over tables taking cover their patrons scrambling with them.

Silence reigns for the briefest of moments. Argus removes his shades, his face painted with utter surprise. The sound of the antique pistol falling to the table echoes through the bar, closely followed by the falling scraps of metal and plaster the bolt round shattered loose.

It was nothing more than a parlor trick, a sleight of the hand, a bit of actor's flair

"I'm not sure what impression you have of me, or my employers, friend. But we don't spend our lives easily. Especially, when No Grave Shall Take Us." Xyptus bares his teeth at Argus.

Of course, this display was meant to be outrageous. "Publius" has almost worn out his use. It wasn't anything to fret about either. The gangers are on edge, he could use that. They're more apt to make a mistake which he can exploit. The bartender's property recently suffered some costly damage. An exceptionally powerful and wise patron could easily renovate this place and even provide him with better equipment to brew his admittedly wonderful wares. Not to mention the shine of admiration and respect in Argus' gray eyes. A resource that'll prove it's usefulness in no time he suspects.

Das it
