The Western half of the wall is complete and the Eastern is making good progress. As you walk back to the inner wall you notice a lone truffle smearing mud on it.

When you attempt to communicate with them you get a basic response back "Gotta build too!"

You shake your cap and carry the truffle back to the nursery. It seems they snuck out while nobody was looking, but no harm done.

Working with Science-shroom has given the Spearshrooms chances to have battles when the occasional creature gets close.

That along with practice and driving away beasts too close to the wall construction has given them a new demeanor. They seem more confident in their abilities now.

>Spearshrooms S >>> HS

---

Writing continues as Science-shroom takes the time to start writing about the various fish and birds. He notes how one bird has a very colorful beak, one fish jumps out of the water, but nothing too important as they are so small.

There is one entry that is concerning in his latest addition:

>Yellow Eyes: Four legged creature with pitch black fur. Followed us and attempted to confront a lone Spearshroom. Ran away when spear was leveled, had claws the size of spearheads.

That was because the Molemen approached us so we didn't need to send out an expedition, we're about to free up some options here with completing the wall and the bestiary, I'll put my spores behind trading when we get the chance to, so far on my list of concerns I want a proper shrine to Shrom (in the pastebin our favor with them is trailing behind U-So and it sounds like U-So is rubbing that in which isn't helping) and I would like some dedicated Nursery attendants, people who can start Education early for the truffles and perhaps figure out their aptitudes and assign them areas of work
>>
>>1486384
I though there was an shrine for Shrom at holy shroom that we brought back from ogres.
I just don't see need to have more shrines right now.

And we have not even searched the jungles for truffles this year...we only collected the ones at Shroms shrine.
Nursery attendants would be good..but again, we need to collect more truffels for them to be really usefull.

The final frames are completed. All that is left is to finish hauling the stone and making sure it all stays together.

Science-shroom has begun to write about the plantlife. Not your own people, you aren't plants. Things like the trees and how their wood is useful or glowflowers. They does make a few discoveries about strange plant:

>Fly Trap: A large plant that has a mouth and strange substance on the inside to lure in bugs. Quickly closes its mouth and the bugs are turned to nutrients

>Large Fly Trap: As above but bigger, note that they are weak to being stabbed from the inside and outside.

>Wine Flower: Colorful flower that seems to make bugs dizzy like they drank wine after rubbing against it.

>Choker Vines: Large vines that wrap around dead trees, any small animal caught is wrapped against it and slowly drained.

Your Spearshrooms get nervous as they realize what acid spitting creature hasn't been written about yet.

>Bestiary 3/4

---

While Science-shroom is off writing, you send one of the Apprentice-shrooms to go study at the mine for other metals. Their first report returns with a haul of bronze and stone.

They first have had miners starting to dig deeper in order to find larger amounts of things besides bronze and copper. Results so far have shown small amounts of an orange metal and some see through rock that chipped easily.

Well its time. The primary enemy of the forest. The thing that gives your scouting parties and Scientists nightmares and spooks all at the same time. The everyday habits of the acid slug. The lesser and age as nobody is scuicidal enough to look for the Greater Acid slug.

With some very delicate sneaking you are able to watch the Acid slugs take down and eat a carnotaurus, shooting acid and melting it from above. They then fall on top of it and begin feasting.

After din-din is over they erupt into an orgy of Acid slug coitus. After learning the mating habits for perhaps a little longer than they should have they manage to leave without a scratch. But before Scientist leaves he swears one of the slugs was stairing at him.

The wall is looking good, last thing the architect wants to add is a walkway atop the wall. The top of the wall will be able to be walked across for upto two passing shrooms at a time. Adding in the ways to get to said walkway will also take a little bit, but not to long.

Yep, looks like a new kind of metal. Its a good deal harder than your bronze but its seemingly very rare in your mountian. Who knows about the other mountians of the world though.

You assign a pair of shrooms to watch over the nursery, it isn't like truffles move around too much.

However, your last batch of truffles are ready to become productive members of Capstone. You keep an eye on the new shrooms as they leave the nursery, but none seem to stand out.

The Attendant-shrooms will make sure any truffles are taken care of when they are found, but it seems your tests of substances failed so far.

Now that you have shrooms working in the nursery you decide to look for more truffles. It doesn't take long as the wall expansion cleared a fair amount trees.

Your Attendant-shrooms soon have ten truffles to take care of. You notice your housing won't be enough once they are fully grown.

---

You have Science-Shroom work along their apprentice to learn more about iron. Apparently without being smelted down the stuff is useless.

Also the amount in your mine seems to be low, but you could always ask the miners to go even deeper.

Either way the amount you find should be a good upgrade the current equipment of your shrooms, but working it into shapes will take more heat than your current smelter can manage.

After a suggestion the priests lead a series of prayers to the gods. U-So remains content, but according to the priest of Shrom they are worried.

The alarm is raised again. You are notified of a group of reptilians heading directly for your walls. The numbers are smaller but there are many more beasts. The beasts all carrying several boxes and bags. At the head of the line of beasts is the reptilian from many months ago, though this time he is clad differently. Another set of fifteen homes are made by the builders. They fill out another section of the land between the two walls.

You like the sound of the idea from the more quiet of the apprentice-shrooms. They don't communicate much, but they work just as hard as the other two researchers.

The three of them begin to actually try and understand more to numbers besides the basics.

Once things start to get complicated you leave them to carve it down on a clay tablet.

Thinking back, you remember the previous tests on animals showing only a few could understand your spores. But wrogi naturally follow leaders of their small packs.

Perhaps if you could control one of those you wouldn't need a full pack to listen to spores. Along with a few spearshrooms and slingers you start a series of walks into the jungle.

Looking out over groups of Wrogi you begin testing which can understand your spores. Unfortunately after two packs none can so far, but they run away when the weapons come out.

After another pack you finally get a leader! The Wrogi looks over at you and seems to naturally do what you say.

But the others don't listen to it anymore. That isn't right. You have it puff up it's poison sack at the others, but they just move on.

Suddenly a roar is heard from another clearing up ahead. Your escort and the singular Wrogi sneak ahead, watching a massive Wrogi finish gulping down part of a Hadrosaurid.

Other Wrogi run around it as it eats. Once it finishes it runs off, the pack with it.

You pet your lone Wrogi on the head, now you know what you must find again.

Circles, squares, spheres, angles. Those words and more fill the science hut.

When they explain it to you it starts to make sense. Your people seemed to have grasped things, but not known why they worked.

With more of this "math" your people will learn why things work, not just how they function.

>Math 2/3

---

An island, that means crossing water. You've seen smaller pieces of wood and leaves float. It should be easy enough for the builders.

Along the water's edge the builders cut down a few trees and push them into the water. The fallen trees float, but they aren't able to ride them.

Thinking fast they use vines to tie the logs together. One of the shrooms then hops on and starts to float out!

Oh they don't know how to move it. Also what happens if they fall in?

The others toss out a vine to the shroom and pull them back in before they sink below the water's surface.

Most of your people can count. Thats pretty nice, not to mention the fact that now you have names for shapes and can construct the different assorted buildings of your village better.

Your not sure if this will have any huge benifits for your people as of now, but in the future this is sure to come in handy. Even if you dont know it yet.

>Math Invented

So apperently, if air is trapped inside something it tends to rise to the surface, that is if the weight of the thing its holding is not to much for it to handle, in which case it sinks.

So basically what you decide to do is tie the logs together like before, but add on some vases of trapped air to the corners to help with the floating. Also adding on sticks to the 'boat' in order to displace the water and propel it forward.

Its not the most graceful method of transportation, and can only carry about three shrooms ,tops before it begins to sink. Not to mention if it wre to get hit by one of those big fish the whole thing might fall apart. But this boat should fulfill the basic purpose of getting from A to B in a pinch.

>Basic boats Created

This "Great Wrogi" was rather large, but you doubt a large squad will be able to stay hidden. You take a group of spearshrooms and pair of slingers just in case things turn violent.

The friendly wrogi follows along as your group stalks through the jungle. The wrogi actually leads your group to a set of fresh tracks in the mud.

Following the tracks, you come to another clearing in the swamp. You focus and make out the shape of the Great Wrogi along with four smaller wrogi around it.

This is your chance, using spores you have the spearshrooms surround the sleeping beasts and get closer.

Great Wrogi stirs as you send spores out to it. Slowly it awakens, glaring at you and inflating its poison sack. You only realize now how close you got.

It lets out a low growl and the other wrogi wake up, the Spearshrooms start moving out of their hiding spots, and the Great Wrogi bows its head to you.

The walk back to Capstone is interesting, the wrogis run around in circles as the Great Wrogi insist on staying by your side. Once back they take up a spot on the outside the second wall.

The library is easy enough to build, it just takes time for the builders to make so many little shelves to put books on.

Science-Shroom is happy to help move the books over once it is done.

>Library 1/2

---

Wrogis seem to be digging themselves small holes in the group, leaving themselves exposed. You know weather doesn't bother you, but they don't have caps!

Builders carefully start to construct a long hut like your own for the Wrogi.

>Wrogi Den 1/2

---

Sling on a wagon turns out to have been an understatement. Apprentice-Shroom is mentioning using vines to propel rocks by pulling them back.

This is going to take some time to get vines like that, but you have workers try to help out. The frame is coming together nicely, it almost looks like a sideways version of the weapons some of the reptilians had.

Your workers are happy to have another building finished. Science-Shroom has moved the small collection of books and tablets to the new building.

Some shrooms are even taking the chance to read of the many creatures written of on the clay tablets made by Science-Shroom.

>Library done!

---

While the Wrogi go off to to hunt for themselves your workers continue building. The den is an elongated hut built around the small ruts that were dug before.

When the Great Wrogi and their pack return the workers run back to their other business.

Most of the wrogi go inside, but one does a few circles before joining the others, weird.

>Wrogi Den complete!

---

Progress is slower than what was thought. They just can't get vines to get enough strength without them tearing when being pulled back. That's when they remember choker vines!

Spearshrooms are asked to go collect a few, luckily they are big and well armed enough to do so without danger.

These vines are much stronger and stretch like the flesh of some creatures. But they need a way to do it easier than pulling it back every time.

In the night, whilst your villagers rest their weary stalks and relax, you are awoken from your sleep. The feeling of the earth shaking an the sound metal scraping against metal and thudding in the nearby Jungle gives you a shiver down your spine as you know none of your warriors would be out this late training.

You leave the Townhall and make your way up to the watchtower. You look across what should be a pitch black jungle to instead see several places of bright light, marching in several distinct units from the north heading southward.

You cant make out what is going on or what is making the light. Several of the groups pass straight by the village, not noticing in the darkness of the night. But as the night goes on, several more of these lights continue moving southward in the same way hardly missing your village. Until hours later, as the sun begins to rise on the Jungle several straggler lights take notice of your walls and begin forming together a distance away from the city.

As the Sun rises higher in the sky, the light of the torches is extinguished and the identity of the things is revealed.

Humans. More than you have ever seen. The three lights each accounted for 10 Spearmen, 10 Swordsmen, 5 Archers, and 2 Humans on some kind of four legged beast.

The group arranges itself outside the outter wall. Weapons at the ready as a Single man Moves forward from the unit.

"By Order of The Emperor, open this door. This town is suspected to harboring theives. Or worse, Shit-scales. Lower any weapons and prepare for an inspection."

Something tells me that these are bandits, or a really incompetent noble with a bunch of levys. Either way, we should be fine as long as we sling them from the walls, targeting the archers first.
For another point, we really need to train more soldiers, and build more weapons and Armour after this, maybe get some Wrogi training.
>>
>>1490638
And we can use the gate as a chokepoint to let our clearly superior troops to fight only small part of their troops at the time.
But yeah, if this ends into fighting we should got this...just gotta arm our giants better for next time.

Also would be good time to capture some human slaves for trading and to...teach us to read.
>>
>>1490657
Your right on the chokepoint. Plus we get to use the corpses to make Humanshrooms. I think maybe we should train some more slingers, or develop that Javelin tech we saw a few threads ago. We use the giants and they become living siege weapons.
>>
>>1490663
More troops, more science with corpses, sacrifices...I am actually hoping this leads into fight.

Not sure if I agree with javelins, as we have now long tradition of slingers, that know their stuff and teach younger ones, and they have worked fine this far.
>>
>>1490687
Well, keep in mind that we are outnumbered 2 to 1, so we need to be smart. We need the Archers dead, and the mounted units wiped out to constitute a victory to have a significant advantage. If the leader escapes alive, we lose regardless, so the ++horsemen needs to die.
Then again maybe we can talk our way out of this. I doubt it, but lets see, because otherwise we are going to lose a number of our well trained warriors, and training replacements will take a while.

"No emperor has authority here. Fuck outta our Jungle." You send by spore across to the opposing army.

Your speech is met by a loud "OHHHH, shit" from some the guys in the back. Others just look around wondering why their buddies are so riled up.

Our Emperor has authority EVERYWHERE , you cur. Now open this Damn gate before we take it down. You have exactly twenty seconds before I...

You give a signal and the Shroom Slingers quickly move up the wall and snipe the back line of Archers. Your Skilled Slingers try assaulting the back line of the human position. Many of the shots are dead on. Killing 6 of the Archers with Direct hits to the head, and hitting several of the swordsmen back there as well.

6 Archers killed
2 Swordsmen killed

"YOU COWARDLY FUNGAL BASTARDS! Take down the wall!" The man says moving his horse to the back of the line, spearmen advancing toward the wooden gate. Your slingers continue to pick off the advancing spearmen. They are easy kills being that they have no protection.

7 Spearmen killed

The spearmen that get to the wall are utterly confused as to how to open it, just sticking the door with their spears, hoping it opens. Little do they know, when it opens a team of your highly skilled spearshrooms wait to slaughter them.

The remaining archers begin firing off volleys of arrows toward your walls. Hitting but not killing some of your troops.

2 Slingers hurt
4 Bronze Spearshroom+ hurt

Your other Spearshrooms shrug off the puny arrows as they harmlessly bounce off of the Bronze armor. The giants sit around in the back, bored as smalls has not given them any orders from you.

The troops begin covering their heads with their arms and weapons as they continue advancing. The Commander shouting orders from behind the remaining archers. WE DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR THIS! the archers shout as they drop their bows and retreat into the Jungle.

COWARDS the commander shouts as the mounted warriors circle around to protect him. Kill those things! he commands.

The horsemen simply look at each other, not moving as the Giant shrooms trap a large amount of humans against the wall.

W-WE SURRENDER, Spare us please! The Swordsmen and Spearmen against the wall shout, tossing their weapons aside and raising their hands.

RETREAT! yells one of the armored Swordsmen in the back. Causing the back line of Swordsmen and Spearmen to flee into the Jungle in random directions.

You watch as the humans beeline for several parts of the forest that you know are inhabited by the more dangerous beasts of the Jungle... Alas they cannot hear reason and continue to run to their probable demise.

Damn cowards! The commander shouts. He and the other Horsemen ride East. They probably lost their bearings.

The newly formed Wrogi tamers are given an assignment. Their first mission is to hunt down and capture the fleeing commander. While the Wrogi unit and several of your spearshrooms scout the nearby Jungle for the runaways, several other smaller tasks are taken on.

Your villagers collect the bodies of the humans outside the wall and stack them in a pile in the outer ring of your town. Collecting the gear as well. But some of the weapons are unaccounted for

+5 Bronze spears +5 Bronze swords +5 Bows

These bows are a bit small, but should be able to be used by your kind. Scientist is almost sweating out of anticipation of studying a new tech.

>Bows captured

The humans are all bound and any with the ability to understand spore are brought under the watchtower, the others are placed in the warming cave.

Why did you come here. What did we ever do to warrant this attack.

[/red] I don't know anything man, I don't even want to be here. That prick forced me into it. If I didn't join in my family would be arrested.[/red]

Several other of the troops give you similar stories. Some begin to water from their eyes, or pants. Humans are interesting. But thats not to say they are free of blame. They go on to tell you the army has been put into motion. The emperor wants the heads of the bandits or Reptilians that raided his caravan. Anyone in the area is free game. They had no idea a city was here, they were simply scouting for bandit hideouts.

They also tell you their commander in particular is a giant dick. Like, a total asshole. But only a few of the prisoners decide to talk to you. Many others don't speak or even look at you.

The Wrogi and spearmen return from the jungle, Several spearmen in tow, the Commander being stalked closely by the Alpha Wrogi, drooling and eyeing the man like a giant steak.

We should turn our slingers into skirmishers, give them bows and short swords, some light maneuverable armor then teach them Stealth and ambush tactics.
>>
>>1492892
A sling is actually a better weapon then a bow. It doesn't have the range, but we live in the dense forest so the bows range advantage is nullified. Its easier to find ammo for a sling (literally about any small rock) and a shot from a good sling can punch through armour in a way that we can't replicate without a crossbow. On top of that the fire rate for a well trained slinger can easily outpace a bowman, and their more maneuverable. Finally, a sling is easier to maintain, and simpler to teach. Also, we are already masters of stealth, we mastered that thread 1

Science-Shroom eagerly takes the bows and uses a few of the slingers to help test how they work.

Things are slow until one of the shrooms realizes they humans had weird stick things. Quickly the run to the battlefield and get one.

Pulling back the string, they fit the stick on and let go. The object flies off!

You should be able to recreate these easily.

>Bow&Arrow learned!

---

With the insight from bows, your workers throw themselves into the stone-thrower. Well they are calling it the ballista now.

You aren't sure how exactly it works, but after getting more vine they use the pulleys to crank back the vines in order to add power.

The main problem now is that they have to cut the vines in order to get them to release. So close yet so far.

Supporting these.
>>
>>1494314
This but substitute slingers with Archers. Massed archers are effective.
>>
>>1494771

Given our environment our slings are more advantageous than bows at the moment, we should work on scaling down the ballista when we finish up and then switch them over to crossbows
>>
>>1494852
Ehhhh, crossbows likely aren't suited for the environment either. Their kind of a maintenance heavy tool, they have an extremely slow fire rate, and they suffer worse logistics issues then regular bows do. They might work for defending the settlement, or if we have to go up against steel plated Calvary, but I wouldn't use them for anything else. If we need to pick up a secondary ranged weapon, then the Short-bow is the only one we could use effectively in our environment, with the added utility of being usable while mounted. The only unfortunate parts are the lack of armour piercing, which seems mandatory, and the issue of ammo supplies.
>>
>>1494888

Ammo shouldn't be too much of an issue considering our forestry capabilities, the biggest failing is our lack of fletching materials, we don't have an industry for it considering we don't hunt
>>
>>1494905
I meant more that in an extended fight archers tend to run out of ammo, where the same is not true for a slinger, partly because their ammo is smaller, and partly they can pick up rocks of the ground to use. I hadn't even considered fletching as an issue.
>>
[I sure do hope new info doesn't make people change actions]
>>
>>1494914
Fletching isn't actually required for arrows. It just gives better flight control, allowing for more accurate shots.

I think a better option for armor piercing that's more inline with our current technology would be throwing spears. Specifically something akin to the roman pilum would be achievable in a short amount of time.
>>
>>1495085
I had actually been thinking about that. We had the research option a while ago, and I think we make a third unit of soldiers who are like roman legionaries, rather then our current Greek phalanx/jungle savage thing we've got going on. Due to weapon design, I don't think we could have our guys equipped with both the spears we use now and the Throwing spears, so they would need to be equipped with a shorter range weapon as well, like a short sword, if we're doing formation fighting, or an axe, if we're not.
>>
>>1495142
Roman soldiers only ever held one or two of the throwing spears at any given time unless they were specially trained skirmishers. They would be used in an opening volley, during a charge or from defensive lines. Unless theres some rule or reason I'm missing, I don't see why we can't have a similar setup for our spearmen. A proper spear as their main weapon and a secondary pair of throwing spears.
>>
>>1495224
I thought about that, I figured there would be a rule against it. Though you are completely right, and if there is not it would be easier, and more effective then making an entirely new unit. Retraining would probably take a winter, but it would massively improve our military power. Though I am now concerned we are secretly Mushroom Rome.

>the Jungle creatures and plants I think would help us the most there

I agree this is the best way to get an early advantage relatively on par with our neighbors. We could, for example, train the Wrogi to act as shock troops to break an enemy line before a fight, like the Saxons used dogs. Or the carnivorous plants could make getting through our lands incredibly difficult.

This will be a good supplement to our spearmen line and slinger skirmishers. Later on, when we have a better idea of what types of forces we're up against, is when we should decide the next proper "evolution" of our Shroom army.

Wew, now thats some noodle use right here. I'll ask crab so maybe.

It may take a while but you could probably dig a canal to your city from the lake/oceans. I mean, if you have a lot of extra turns to spare.

See pic related.

Get to work with that shroom dick m8But nah, you have been known to find them in smaller numbers out in the wild normally inside dead thigs, and under that special Shrom tree.

Does that mean we can recruit the mermaids?

Who the fuck told you about the mermaids!

But nah, as of now crab doesn't want me making any new races. Because fuck diversity. There could or could not be mermaids in the future depending on how hard it is to convince him.

There will probably be an update at some point tomorrow(as in today). I was expecting one today but it didnt happen. Pic semi related

"No, fuck you."

"No, fuck of you mushroom scum. You aren't getting shit outta me.

Look, just tell us what we need to know and we can end this. We don't like this as much as you may think.

You better hope I never get free buddy. I swear, I will bring the wrath of the emperor upon this shithole you call a town. He says spitting at your feet.

Welp, that went less than well.

I really want to sacrifice this guy. Anyone else agree? We are losing The Suns Favour. I think, I get the Sun and the Forest mixed up

Was that update worth the 2 day wait ? The one Crab couldent just overlook. Or even Do himself

After the amazing job your slingers did in the defense you begin to train ten more.

The slings are easy enough to make, but training them will take time. Your more experienced slingers do their best to help the new shrooms though.

>+10 Slings
>New Slingers 1/2

---

You send word to the craftsmen by the mine to make thirty new suits of bronze armor.

There are a few complaints about the cramped smelter for that much work, but that might just be the cool season starting.

Giant-Shrooms are happy to help and wheel the wagon full back. Current slingers and unarmored spearshrooms replace their old wooden armor for the shiny new protection.

>+30 Bronze Armor
>-60 Bronze Bars

---

One of the apprentice-shrooms comes into your hut and asks for you to come to the outer wall. You follow along and see the result of their labor.

It is a wheeled, massive bow. They must have scrapped the sling idea.

Science-shroom explains how they can make large arrows fly across the sky and even reload in a few minutes. But moving it around is difficult.

>Ballista Invented!
>+1 Ballista

---

As you walk back to your hut you are cut off by another sending, the attendant-shrooms need you at the nursery.

When you arrive you see 8 new shroom villagers in the nursery, but something is off about six of them. Then you hear one of them speak "Aye, Chief."

Wait, hear? They have mouths? You also notice they are slightly shorter, but otherwise are normal shrooms.

You check in with the other two who grew from aquatic beasts, but the only odd thing is that they wish to go "swimming"

+6 Man Shrooms
+2 Shroom Villagers

---

You are only one shroom. With over 100 villagers you can't be there for all of them, can you?

What if something happens while you are out of Capstone?

You need a secondary chief or just someone who is trusted to give orders.

Well, TinyShroom is the only one with any real speaking or leading Experience, though I am concerned about him becoming a power mad dictator with a Napoleon complex. Scienceshroom may accidentally go the way of Frankenstein. Watashroom, while I may trust as a warrior, I am concerned about his Civil politics. The only other option is Frogshroom, but He is more of a Diplomat and translator.
>>
>>1500715
Science shroom should be our secondary chief.
>>
>>1500611
We would need to tie the pink man down on a slab adjacent to a corpse of one of the humans so we can see a side by side comparison of the living versus the dead ones autopsy, and try to figure out what makes on living and the other dead. We start by testing some of the humans sense like hearing, smell and pain with simple test, the we use one of the tiny sharp blades and start cutting open the corpse, followed by doing the same to the adjacent human commander. We'll first cut and peel the skin back to look at the organs, and draw up on a slab.
>>
>>1500744
I think scientist shrooms will be distracted from his work. I vote for tiny shroom.

I'll second this

I vote Science Shroom.
>>
>>1500744
I agree, Scienceshroom would be best as he's the only one with actual leading experience. Even if it's with the short/small expeditions. It's a good answer for the time being, while we find a young shroom to be groomed into long term leading.
>>
>>1501688
Immediately I'll agree with ScienceShroom
Long term I think the next best candidate is, TinyShroom; He communicates with the giants well and is one of our most eloquent speakers. He also seems extremely intelligent.
