First day of September and already you were dreading the incoming arrival of the new school year. Technically speaking you arrived with the first wave of new girls over the summer. But that only accounts for a small number of new students arriving to LGA. The real meat of it all, both new girls and girls returning from summer vacation, comes past labor day.

Next week would be the week that can possibly make or break your career here as an Office. It’s one thing to help manage the school when it’s on summer vacation. It’s another when it’s the school year and everyone is back to their academics.

Perhaps if your crew needs help with that kind of stuff you will help them. Would be nice to spend more time with them you suppose.

For now though, you pull on your uniform. You’re close to deciding whether or not to come to work today when you receive a phone call. “Commander Zumwalt, Logistics,” you answer.

“Zumwalt, it’s the Captain.” The Captain! You stand stiffly in the lockerroom as the other girls get dressed all around you. “We have an emergency in A Block. I need you to go down there and restore order.”

“What happened?” you ask.

“Some idiot brought their pet grasshoppers onto the ship and they got out and now they’re eating up almost all of A Block’s crops.”

Oh. That’s not good at all!

“I’ll be right down.” You hang up and hurry out the door. There you see Denise ready with the Kettenkrad. “Denise, we need to get down to Block A and quick!” Denise salutes and revs the engine up. You hop onto the back and hurry down to Block A.

You’re wearing a mask and some goggles for this. Why? Because the couple of grasshoppers you thought it’d be turned out to be almost entire clouds of hundreds of them. “How did this happen!?” you shout.

One of the farmer girls yells out, “Damn liberal pinko communist wouldn’t let us shove her pet grasshoppers off the ship!” She sprays a hose out into the air to drown some of the grasshoppers while others take nets to catch as many as they can. “She knows the goddamn regulations, we can’t let foreign fauna onto the ship! This is the kind of shit that happens!”

“How do we stop it!?” you yell.

“AAAAHHH! I HAVE LOCUSTS IN MY SHIRT! GET ‘EM OUT!” One of the farmers runs away, grasshoppers trailing after her. More farmers are panicking as the swarms eat away at the crops and plants.

“I don’t know!” says the farmer. “It’s up to you, Commander!”

Sure its no longer 'organic', but we can wash the stuff off before consuming.

Also, seal this section and all adjacent sections including air ducts. Gas all directly connected air ducts and hallways, then gas this section. Drive the pests to the kill zone.

These crops may not be savable, but we have to contain the swarm no matter what.

Also have the hall monitors detain whomever brought this plague upon us.

“Gas, gas, gas!” you yell. Everyone pulls on their gas masks and seals them on tight. You all hurry to designated safety zones where the gas won’t penetrate the walls. There’ll be some fallout for using pesticides on organic crops, but it’s better to have crops to clean than no crops at all. The farmers seal the section and all adjacent sections. “Right, everyone ready?” you call over the radio.

“Ready,” says one of the farmers at the controls.

“Go for pesticides. Gas them.”

You and Denise hurry up to the security room where several Hall Monitors are carefully observing the place, making sure no one was trapped in, all that stuff. You watch as the gas floods the chambers and does it work on the grasshoppers. They all start falling dead onto the ground. Man, gonna take forever to clean all of those corpses. “You have the name for who let the grasshoppers in?” asks one of the Hall Monitors.

“Yeah, yeah,” says a farmer. She’ll probably get arrested and serve some time for letting this happen. But for now, at least your food supply is at a surplus. You can’t have something like this happen in the middle of the school year when everyone is eating like its going out of style.

After an hour or two of straight gassing, the chambers are vented with fresh air, driving the pesticides out. “Right. The buggos are dead. If only it was this simple in Starship Troopers,” says one of the Hall Monitors.

“Thanks, Commander,” says a farmer. “You’ve saved our crops for now.”

“No need to thank me,” you say simply.

“By the way,” says another farmer. “I heard you guys need another crew, right?”

“Yeah!” You turn to her, making her flinch in surprise at your reaction. “Do you know who they are?”

“Um, some girls in our department were interested,” she says. “Think there’ll be a place for them?”

“Tell them to come try it out. See how things work. There’s always a place for more people in Tankery.”

The farmer smiles. “I’ll let them now! Thanks, Ellie!” You smile happily, nodding to them.

The Hall Monitor looks over to you. “I’ll be sure to let the Captain know how things went. You’ll be on your way then, Commander?” Right. You actually spent most of your work day trying to get this handled, but at least it’s handled now. So yeah, you will take your leave then.

You find Athena and Tessa sitting around their desks as you pack things up to leave. “Hey. Did you two reach out to Griselda yesterday?” you ask. They both nod, grimly. “… that’s not a good expression. What did she say?”

“She wouldn’t let us back in,” says Athena.

“Oh.” You fold your arms. “Why?”

Tessa says, “I don’t think Griselda has quite forgiven us for what we did.”

“Said we were only joining now since she was winning,” Athena explains. “I don’t blame her. But we tried to tell her it was different this time but she wouldn’t have it. So yeah.”

“I’ll talk to her, don’t worry,” you say. They both nod, still looking glum. “Come by the hangar later, we’ll see, okay?”

“Griselda refused them?” says Winona.

You and the girls walk along to the Hangar. Stack folds her arms, mulling over it. “Way I see it, GrisGris does have a point, y’all. They did leave her right after a very harsh loss. And only now they want to rejoin after we’re first in the division and on a long winning streak?” Stack shakes her head, clicking her teeth. “Does look suspicious.”

“Hey, they’re not joining because they want to win. They want to help,” you state.

Ingrid folds her arms like Stack, shrugging. “I dunno. It’s only natural to be on a winning team.”

Josephina says, “Well, I think they’re being straight. I mean, it is frowned upon to leave your commander like that. But if they want to atone, then why not?”

“It’s not that they want to atone, they probably do,” says Winona. “The question is the timing. And besides, even without them Griselda has done fine commanding the team.” She holds up a hand, then thumps her chest. “But I want Athena and Tessa to join us all the same. Everyone deserves a chance at Tankery. No matter what they’ve done, it’s our game!”

“Winona’s right.” Josephina pats Winona on the head, making her giggle a little.

Stack rubs her chin, then shrugs a little. “I don’t know. What do you make of it, Ellie?”

Try to think the best of people, even if suspicion exists. If GrisGris doesn't want them in a tank, maybe they can help the team some other way.

“They probably want to help, regardless if we’re winning or losing,” you say. “It is bad timing, I’ll admit. But the way I see it, I don’t think they ever really didn’t. If you remember, Griselda wasn’t the most easy person to work with last year if the rumors are correct.” Everyone shrugs and agrees quietly with that. “We’ll just have to see if she’ll reconsider when I talk to her.”

Winona sighs, folding her arms. “I was afraid of this. More drama.”

“Yeah, drama ruins everything,” says Stack. “I can’t believe we’re getting more of it.”

“Not to mention school’s starting soon,” says Ingrid. “If we thought the early tournament was hard, I’m not sure how we’re going to get through this next bit of the tournament with the interleague teams.” Fair enough. “Well, no matter. Let’s get onto practice anyway.”

-

With that, you arrive at the hangar. Your Cromwell was now being gutted as the Comet conversion began coming in. Oleg and company were working intensely on it. And hopefully, it’ll be ready in time for the match against the French.

You find Griselda talking to Iris. “… and then they came to me saying it just to help me out. Very nice of them. But I don’t trust them to hang out with the team. If they couldn’t stay last year just because we were losing, I don’t trust them to stay when we’re winning and we suddenly take a harsh loss.”

Iris shrugs, taking a sip of tea. “Way I see it, a lady forgives as long as the apology is sincere.”

“Eh.” Griselda looks down at her clipboard. “If they wanted to help, they could’ve come back earlier. You know. When I –needed- them. But whatever.”

“Griselda, Iris.” The two of them turn to you. “I couldn’t help but notice you two were talking about Athena and Tessa?”

“We were,” says Griselda. “But I’ve decided not to let them rejoin my crew or join any of these crews. I’d rather not have a pair of girls who will desert the team at the first sign of trouble thank you very much,” she states. “People leaving the team always puts a damper on the team spirit. And I can’t have my team deserting en masse because of them after we lose a match or something.”

You cross your arms, frowning. “Now Griselda, everyone deserves a chance at Tankery. It doesn’t matter what they’ve done in the past.” Griselda rolls her eyes, placing her hands at her hips. “Look. I know what they did to you was wrong and all-“

“Athena was my friend, one of my only friends in Middle School,” says Griselda. “She –promised- me we would go into Tankery together when we came into LGA. And when the going got tough, well she went going. So forgive me if I have trouble trusting her. I don’t doubt their intention to help. I do doubt their ability to stay with the team however. You two are my most loyal teammates, you’ve stuck through with me even during our stupid losses, you’ve put up with me even when I’ve been admittedly insufferable. They couldn’t.”

Iris sighs. “All we ask is that you give them a second chance. It wouldn’t hurt. We’re not talking about the fate of the school here, Griselda.” Griselda is quiet at that for a few seconds.

Griselda walks up to you, then taps your chest with her clipboard. “You promise they’ll stay with the team, Ellie?”

“I give you my word. They’ll stay with the team. I’ve been easing them into the idea of it for a month now. They’re not just joining because it’s fashionable. They want to do this,” you say.

Griselda folds her arms, a slight scowl on her face. She looks over at Iris, who gives her an approving nod. “Alright.” She points her finger to you. “I’ll let them join back with my crew. But it’s on you. They better be on their best behavior.” She sighs, shaking her head. “Now, I’ve just been told we have a new crew coming to crew the SU-100. Have you met them-“

“Here we are!” You look back to see the Naval Studies Agriculture team. And the first thing you notice is their impressive… tracts of land. The five of them smile happily. “We hear your SU-100 tank needs a crew.” She steps up and introduces herself. “I’m Jeannie Chapman. Naval Studies Agriculture. We’re ready to join up!”

Griselda smiles at them. “Great, good, good. Um.” She checks the fifth member of the crew. “Uh, an SU-100 needs only four people so…”

“That’s fine!” says the fifth member. “I can just ride along and cook some food for everybody!” Er… You look at Griselda, as does Iris.

Griselda blinks. “… okay then. Well, let me get you guys acquainted. Uh, Elodie. Go ahead and get everyone started on strength training for today, okay?”

“Alright,” you say.

Right, what to do for today then?

“Come on, come on!” Miss McPherson runs the crews down on the training field. Today’s lesson? Cavalry battle.

In essence, Stack stands on your shoulder with Winona and Ingrid on the other side and upfront and Josephina behind. “Why am I on top?”

“Because you’re too short!” yells Ingrid. Stack shoves Ingrid’s head forward. “Ow! Bitch!”

“I may be short, but that’s one of my charm points!” Stack yells back.

Miss McPherson whistles away. “Alright! Ready, begin!” It’s an all out brawl in the fields as all the crews charge and tackle one another. The goal was to gain the flag wrapped around the head of the rider. “Come on! Coordinate, coordinate! Call out!”

“How the hell do we do this!?” yells Winona.

“AHAHA!” The Survivalists are already in an early lead with three flags from the Historians, the Poles, and the Light Music Club. Duchess Schaefer wields the flags on high. “Come and claim our flag if you dare!” They turn to you, immediately set on getting your flag.

“Call out, Ellie!” says Stack.

“Charge!” You get a good wind up going, then you all lean forward and start rushing at the Survivalists. They turn on the spot to you, then start running up at you. Here we go! AAAAHHHH! They scream at you, you all scream back at them. Stack reaches out, as does Duchess.

The two of you make your pass. You all screech to a halt.

Stack raises the flag and Duchess’ tank top. “I got it!”

“Hey! That’s not fair!” Duchess holds her arms over her bare chest.

“Ha, I’m getting a lesson in fairness from the Survivalists!?” Stack raises herself to a standing position. “I do declare this is a worthy victory for my team! WOOOOOOHOOOOO!” Everyone cheers and whistles at that, happy as can be.

Once you all come out of the showers, you step out into the hangar towards your tents. “Man! What a day!” says Stack. She suddenly stops you, then points out Griselda by the door. The entire Tankery team takes cover behind their tanks or behind obstacles and checks out what’s going on.

Griselda is talking to Athena and Tessa. “… and I just want you to know that we’re sorry,” says Athena. “I’m sorry. I know I hurt you, Griselda. But I want to make it up to you.” Griselda has her arms folded, a scowl on her face as she looks at the two of them. “So you’ll give us a chance, right?”

Griselda holds up a finger. “Only a chance.” She prods her finger into Athena’s chest. “You are lucky Elodie speaks well of you two. I’d have never let you have this chance otherwise. You’ve already disappointed me. You are not going to disappoint her. Got it?” They both nod. “Good. Now… go ahead and reacquaint yourself with the tank.” With that, Griselda goes back to her office. You all poke your heads out.

Well, that went astonishingly well.

“Hey, Ingrid.” Ingrid is busy watching baseball highlights on her phone as your other crewmembers cozy on up in the tent. “How are you feeling?”

“Good I suppose.” She leans back against the tank, sighing. “Why do you ask?”

“I just felt I should ask. Since… you know, the whole thing with you and your parents?”

“Oh.” Ingrid frowns at that, grumbling. “Well, yeah, I suppose. Look, it’s no big deal, Ellie. I mean, I hate to like… impose things on people. Well besides baseball. But you don’t need to go out of your way to help me like you did with Winona and Stack. The way things are, they’re fine. I’ve accepted that.”

“Just because you’ve accepted it doesn’t make it right. You do deserve your parents admiration and love. It doesn’t matter which sport you play.” Ingrid folds her arms, looking down at the floor. “You know, Ingrid. If you could have it your way, would you take baseball over Tankery?”

“Honestly, yeah, I would,” says Ingrid. “Don’t get me wrong, Tankery is great. It’s the best summer I’ve had in… ever. But baseball is the game I grew up with. And if I had a chance to go pro, I’d take it any day.” You don’t blame her you suppose, that’s completely fair. “No offense.”

“None taken.”

Ingrid sighs loudly. “…but, I mean-… Look. I love Tankery, I really do. Here’s a question for you, Elodie.” Hm? “Winona loves Unlimited. Josephina has Helicraft. I have baseball. Stack is the only besides you in this crew that genuinely loves classic Tankery.”
