“No! No way, absolutely no way!” Usagi cries out, a hand on the board and the other on her face.

Your name is Kaori Etou, a student of the Tetsuyashi Academy of the Psionic Arts, and you are watching the class president of 1A do her job for the festival next week.

A student stands up from his seat. He shouts, “The vote won fair and square! It’s decided!”

“It’s not even a majority! T-this is...! ” she says, “Kaori, help me out here!”

“Eh-ehn?” you flinch, caught off guard. “We could redo the vote with single-transferrable vote, perhaps.”

“The what-now?” she blankly blinks, “A redo?”

Another guy rises. “Hey, you can’t do that! That one was perfectly good. You can’t weasel your way out of this, Saki!”

Usagi gulps. “We’re not going to do a maid café, that’s too embarrassing!”

A voice comes from the back of the classroom. “Embarrassing?” he scoffs, “There’s nothing embarrassing about domestic service. Please, we live in a modern society that doesn’t discriminate against people of different classes.” He punctuates the sentences by adjusting his glasses. “Now, if you can just relay our event to the Student Council...”

“You missed the point completely!”

“But Saki...” a girl speaks up. Almost every male student looks at her in surprise, “Everyone did see the café win...” she says, huffing between each sentence. She’s breathing way too heavily to be saying something like that. She’s suspicious, way too suspicious.

“Uuuuu,” the class president bemoans.

“Surely, it won’t be that bad, Yuu,” you say. “Besides, aren’t you fond of dressing up?”

“Ehn?”

“When we first met, if I recall correctly, you were disguised as shrubbery—“

“That’s completely different, how is that even the same thing?”

A drops a fist into an open palm, “Oh, right! You were that crazy bush girl!”

“What the heck are you calling me!?” Usagi says, “Do you want to get hurt?!”

“Oh, um,” you stammer. That was bad, say something else! Save yourself— “Y-you’re right, that is different. Oh but, there was that time where you wore a maid cosplay in the hos—“

“AAAAHHH!” she leaps to cover your mouth, “How do you know about that!? How, how!?!?”

“I, um, ah, uh—“

Someone else cuts in, “Our class president is a hypocrite too!” he says, “We demand a trial!”

“I, uh, ah,” you panic, “H-how about a duel?”

“What?” someone says.
“That’s it, Etou, a duel! You’re a genius!”
“That’s... one way of settling it.”
“Duel, duel, duel!”

“Ehn? Ehn!?” Usagi recoils. It takes for a moment before she realize what happened—you gave her a way out! “A-alright, Iet’s decide with a duel!”

“Yes!” a boy says, “Okay, all of us versus you, let’s go!”

A student besides him gets up and smacks the back of his head with a piece of paper. “Shut up and calm down, you idiot. How is that fair?”
“We need a representative.”
“Whoa whoa, before that, we need to know the rules.”
“Good ol’ fists, how about that?”

“No,” you shut that thought down as soon as it comes up, “I will not allow that! Perhaps something more friendly?”

“Arm wrestling.” A single voice speaks out, and it comes from Sorai.

“Arm... wrestling?” Usagi says.

“A girl against a boy, that’s not fair at all.”
“I don’t know about you guys, but I’m all for gender equality.”
“Yeah, Saki could be pretty ripped under that blazer.”
“He’s right. You don’t know if she’s rocking a six pack.”

“R-ripped!? What the...!?” the class president staggers back, her face red. “S-shut up!!”

“‘Course, you’re free to use your arts,” Sorai says, “A battle of strength, wits, and skill.”

“I’ll do it,” the bespectacled boy from before steps up, “Leave it to me, everyone!”

You say, “Who’s everyone...?”

You don’t really mind what the class is going to do on Tuesday, but...

“Good luck, Usagi,” you say.

“R-right, thanks,” she says as she clears her head. “Let’s go! Dou, I hope you’re ready!”

“Don’t underestimate me, Saki,” he replies, pushing up his glasses.

You meekly ask, “Is it starting now? In this classroom? Is... is that fine?”

“No one’s got time for Practicals, let’s start this!”

Without any time at all, desks are cleared except for two that are parked together, facing opposite of each other. Yuu and the boy sit at either ends, both putting their elbows onto the table.

“Standard rules, right?” Usagi asks.

“Correct.”

You sigh as you put your hands on top of theirs. “I can’t help but feel that this is terribly irresponsible, but... 3... 2... 1... Go!”

You let go, and Saki’s table disassembles. Screws and washers fly out, steel of the legs bending and breaking at bends, the wood of the table crumbling away. Her elbow drops, nothing to hold it up.

“Kaisuke Dou’s power!”
“Oh my god, it’s over already!”
“What a cheater, jeez.”

“It’s... not over yet!” Usagi cries.

“W-what’s this!?” a spectator shouts.

Underneath Usagi’s arm is... a piece of wood stuck to her with her power!

“No way! Her art!”
“Class President isn’t out of the match yet, her elbow is still touching the table! She’s not cheating!”
“Go Saki!”
“Kaisuke, you got this!”

What... what is the teacher going to say about the ruined desk...?

With this, Usagi then—

“What’s wrong, Saki? You’re free to surrender at any moment,” he says, the strain clear in his voice. “Aaany moment.”

“Heh” she laughs, her bangs covering her eyes. “Hehehehahah...”

“W...what? What’s so funny?”

“You want a maid café? I’ll give you one. If I win, then we’ll have a maid café, but...” she looks up, a creepy grin now on her face, “The guys will be the ones wearing the French maid outfits, while us girls get butler uniforms.”

“Y-you—!“ An incredible mental attack that weakens the opponent for a fraction for a moment, but if they don’t take advantage of it, they’d surely come back with twice the strength. There’s no stronger incentive than avoiding the cost of defeat. But Usagi knows—

“HaaaaaAAA!” she gives it all she’s got, pushing down and slamming her opponents hand on his desk. Usagi takes a step back, heavily breathing. “Ahahahahh! I win!”

“Victory goes to the class president!” you say, raising her arm.

Sorai mumbles, “Guess I’m staying in that day.”

Various moods ranging to sheer terror to mild elation fill the room, along with plenty of groans and cries for help.

“It’s time.”

“A-am I allowed to take it off now?”

“No, this is punishment,” Usagi crosses her arms, “This is what you get for disappearing yesterday.”

“You’re cruel,” you tell her, tugging at your maid uniform. “You had more than enough help at that time.”

The doors open, and some wary people walk in.

“Kaisuke, the hell are you wearing?”
“Shut up and order.”
“Wow, y’know I knew you were perverted but this is...”
“One more word out of you and I’ll stuff you in one my these myself!”

Usagi nudges you, “Go on, go greet the customers.”

“I... ah... as you say...” you sigh. Slowly, you trudge to the door, waiting for someone to come. You fidget. An upperclassman goes through next, and he looks at you. Then he glances at everyone else. “W-welcome—“

“Wow, you’re a dude? Impressive.”

“Ah?”

The walls are lightly decorated with arching ropes with paper hanging underneath, announcing that this is, indeed, a café, as if the outfits weren’t enough. Desks are rearranged, and the back of the room is where the mouthwatering aroma of various foodstuffs drift from. To the left of it is a humble and dark corner with a footlocker for janitorial supplies, perfect for sulking in.

You do not sulk in it.

“Pardon me, but no, I am not a ‘dude’.“

“Oh shoot,” he covers his mouth, flinching, “I didn’t mean—“

You attempt to reclaim your femininity, taking a page from the girls at Hirundo. You slightly lean forward, tilt your head, and look up at him. “That was rather rude,” you say, raising your voice an octave.

“Ah, it’s just that, ah, um—‘

“Is that it? Do I look like a boy that much?” you put your hands on your wrists. Palms up, not clenched in a fist. Open.

“No, no! I was kidding! It was a joke, haha...” he scratches the back of his head.

“That was mean,” you say, “I wasn’t aware my upperclassmen were so vicious.”

“I didn’t mean it, sorry, sorry! Let me make it up to you, then.”

“Then, I’ll forgive you...if you order the strawberry parfait for me.” The sentence ended with a hum. He nods his head and gives you a hundred affirmations as you redirect him to an empty seat. Something else pokes at your mind though, making you cry on the inside.

You can’t believe... you just did that!

You’re no better than those at Hirundo Girls’ Academy! You’re the absolute worse, not even a step above garbage. That was... that was...!

A classmate taps you on the shoulder, handing you a parfait as she points to the upperclassman from before. You shoot him a smile from a distance.

You look at the dessert.

“Yuu!” walking over, you call her. She turns around, and you hand her the parfait. “Here you go.”

“You can’t bribe me with this, Kaori,” she says.

“It’s not a bribe. Someone bought it for me, and I don’t have an appetite,” you wave her idea away.

“Hooo? Well, I can’t waste free food. Thanks, Kaori!”

From the side, you see someone enter. It’s—

“Hi Onii-ch—“ you say, stopping yourself, “Katsuya-onii-sama.”

“Please don’t call me that in public,” he says, and then he shakes his head. He has dark circles around his eyes, “No, wait, that doesn’t sound right. Just, don’t...?”

Usagi looks at you two suspiciously, “What kind of relationship do you two even have?”

“He’s my O—“

“Childhood friends. Hey, Usagi,” he bluntly interrupts you, “What’s with the getup?” Katsuya then sweeps the scene with his eyes. “Oh. The maid outfit looked better on you.” You purse your lips.

“Too bad,” she replies, twirling her hair, “Are you going to stand there all day or what?”

“Ah right,” you say, “I’ll wait on you, Katsuya-sama.”

”Cake?”

“Huh, I gue—“

“A parfait, perhaps? Or maybe... me?”

He closes the menu and stares are you dead in the eyes. “I’ll have you for cake in a parfait.” Katsuya’s blank expression breaks at the same time as yours does.

“A parfait it is then,” you hold back laughter, and go off to get one.

In no time at all, you return with the dessert in your hands, carefully lowering it onto the table.

“Here you go, a summer berry parfait,” you say.

“What’s in it?”

“Some berries, some summer, a parfait...” you listlessly answer.

He sighs, “No idea, got it.” He takes a spoonful, and makes some quiet sound of elation.

“Are you okay?” you ask, “You look tired.”

“You’ve been asking that a lot lately,” he replies, “I’m fine, just need a bit of sleep.”

“I should’ve taken the futon last night,” you say.

“That’s not related at all.”

“Oh,” you say, “So you were doing that last night, no wonder I recall shuffling. I understand, Katsuya, I won’t pry into your needs.”

You pout.

...He still hasn’t said anything about the uniform.

When Katsuya realizes you’re looking at him, he uneasily meets your eyes, “....What is it Kaori?

Your pout is amplified. It takes you about half a minute to realize he can’t read your mind.

How... how do you say it?

He pointed out Yuu’s. Why is he so unfair?

“Um,” you say, looking around and lightly swaying your clothes. You...

“Oh yeah, why are you the only girl wearing a maid uniform?” he says.

You feel your hopes rise, “Yuu’s forcing me to wear it. It isn’t too terrible on me... is it?”

Unbeknownst to you, Katsuya’s mind stopped for a second, careful not to step on one of the thousand line mines you had inadvertently laid out.

“Better than the guys by a mile,” he jokes.

“That...” you puff up your cheeks, “Of course, hmmf!” Shouldn’t that be a given? If you had lost to any of them...!

“This is really good,” Katsuya says, taking a mouthful of the parfait. “Have you tried this?”

“I haven’t,” you say, “I’ve been busy—“

“Then,” he says, taking a spoonful and offering it to you, “here.”

You should get moving; you’ve been standing here for a long while now...

But...

Can’t you be selfish, if only for a moment?

You lean forward.
