You woke up to the sound of guns.

At 5 AM.

FleetFest was apparently well underway as tankers from all schools were sparring, practicing, or hanging around on LGA. That meant lots of booths and kiosks were being set up, lots of impromptu street races, spars in parks, the works.

If you’re going to work today, you’re probably going to have to clean up after everybody. Not going to be fun.

Winona seems to agree. “Oh this is going to suck,” she says. “Everyone’s going to want an engineer’s opinion on what to do for FleetFest, more people are going to want me to help them fix their stuff, I’m going to be so busy today!”

“It’s worse,” says Stack. “Next week is labor day. School’s going to start. We’re going to have to take online courses and lectures.” Everyone groans at that.

You all step out of the lockerrooms, dressed in uniforms. “Well, I guess this is where I go to work,” says Josephina.

“Same,” says Ingrid. “Looks like summer’s over, girls. Gotta accept it.” Winona frowns heavily at that. Summer is over. Now comes the hard facts of autumn. And next, the chilly days of winter. But, the summer was at least well spent in the tournament.

You sigh quietly. Well, the summer was fun while it lasted. Now comes the working days.

With that, you say goodbye to the girls and head off to work.

Denise happily takes your coat and replaces it with a mug of coffee for you. The office without Lyra seems all that much quieter, emptier now. Hilda continues to type and file away at finance reports, Tessa and Athena are shooting the breeze as they work through their reports as well. And as for you? You’ll be supervisor until further notice.

Some part of you really regrets passing up the Rank One job. But that’s in the past now.

For now, it was time to work. You take a sip of coffee and sit down at your desk to look at reports. “Ellie.” You look over at Tessa. “Just wanted to say, you did great at the All-Star Game.”

“Yeah,” says Athena. “Not bad.” She smiles a little.

“Thanks, guys.” You turn on your computer and get ready to work when… “Has anyone seen Nimitz?” You receive your answer in Nimitz coming in through the door. He hops onto your desk and drops off a dead rat. All the girls recoil at the sight of it.

Damn it, Nimitz.

You pick up a report from one of the many cubicle monkeys in the Logistics Office. “So far everything’s green,” says the girl as she types away at her desk. “Chief Caldwell is having us rush through the checks in Logistics in regards to our food, water, luxury supplies, etc. Everything is currently in the surplus state so we won’t run out for some time. And if we do, we’ll have Agriculture and other facilities here on the ship to back it up.”

“Good, good.” You place the report down on her desk. “Any anomalies or anything weird to report?” you ask.

“Actually.” The girl raises a finger. “Um.” She points to one of her fellow workers. “Vicky. What was that thing you wanted to bring up to management?”

Vicky leans back, a bluetooth headset on her ear. “Oh, yeah! Textbook deliveries are late and the contractor company hasn’t sent us a revised ETA on when they’ll deliver the textbooks for the General Studies students yet.”

“Have you advised the Captain or Chief Caldwell?” you ask.

“Yeah. They were both looking into it. Problem is we can’t just switch out companies right before the school year starts. Some of the girls might have to reuse older textbooks,” says Vicky. What’s wrong with that? “Unfortunately uh…” She reaches into her drawer, then hands you a textbook. History of the United States. “They’re kind of out-of-date.”

You glance through the book. The first thing you plant your eyes on is the fact that Lafayette Girls Academy apparently boasts about keeping an all-white student body in the face of Government intervention. “Well. That’s pretty old.”

“Ain’t it?” says Vicky. “Chief Caldwell was actually about to ask your advice on the subject.”

I'd say find any companies and do a price check on what we can afford on budget, and use it as a supplement until we get our textbooks.

At least use it as a warning to get the company off its ass that if they don't give you a decent ETA, we'll be switiching

You’re on the phone now with Lyra discussing the issue. “So I’d say keep the old textbooks now, but be on the look out for any new companies who can do it on a budget. Try and use that to supplement our supplies until we get new textbooks.”

“I see, I see,” says Lyra. “Use it to give a kick in the ass to the old company to get their textbooks out?”

“Hopefully so. I’d rather we not get in the news about LGA handing out textbooks about how we used to be segregated,” you say simply. “Think that can be done?”

“Yeah. Thanks, Elodie. I’ll tell the Captain about it later, alrighty?”

“Alright.” You hang up there, then nod to Vicky and the other office worker girl. “Right, I should get going you two. Anything else you need help with?”

“Not at the moment,” says Vicky. “Thanks again, Commander.” With that, you leave off down the way. You sigh. You feel so tired today, so down. Maybe it’s just the realization that the fun times are over. At least for now. Wait until next summer you suppose. Maybe you’ll pay a visit to your parents or something.

Regardless. Work’s coming to a close. So-

You receive a phone call. You pick up your smartphone. “Hello?”

“Ellie, it’s Athena.”

“Is something wrong?”

“No, no. Listen. Can you meet me and Tessa after work? We need to ask you something, in person.”

Hilda and Mulcahy converse a little as they pack up. “It’s gonna get colder,” says Hilda. “How do you handle that kind of stuff, Mulcahy?”

“Heatpacks, a lot of heatpacks,” she states. Hilda looks at Mulcahy’s chest for a second. “Did you just assume I stuff my fecking heatpacks into my chest?”

“Are you assuming I’m assuming you stuff your fecking heatpacks into your chest?” Hilda snaps back.

“You what-“ Mulcahy snorts, stomping her foot before heading out the door with her. You and Denise keep on walking as well behind them. The two of you manage to get outside, and there you find Athena and Tessa on the curb. Athena takes a sip of coffee out of a cup, before tossing it into a nearby trash can.

“Ellie.” Athena folds her arms, standing stiffly. “We need your advice.”

“What’s up?” you ask.

Tessa looks to Athena, swaying a little on her feet. “Me and Athena have been thinking. We’ve been talking to Griselda a little too. Not much, just… saying hello, complimenting her, stuff like that. And um…” She goes quiet too.

Athena finally has to blurt it out. “We want to rejoin Griselda’s crew.”

“Oh?” You smile at that. “Awesome! She’ll be happy to have you!”

They glance away. “… right?” you say.

“Ellie. We abandoned Griselda right after quite possibly her worst loss ever,” says Athena. “We left her alone. W-… We were hoping you would put in a good word for us to Griselda.”

“I can. But you guys need to reach out to her first, put some work in. She’s not going to respect it at all if it was just me asking her for you two to come back. You two need to show her you want to come back. You guys do, right?” you ask.

“Of course,” says Tessa.

“She’ll probably think we want to come back because she’s finally winning,” says Athena. “But it’s not. It’s because we think she genuinely needs our help. She could use us two again.”

“Fine, go with that,” you say. “Call her up and see what happens, okay? I’ll get to Gris later if I can. But for now, you two have to initiate. It won’t be healthy otherwise.”

“Right.” Tessa smiles at that, satisfied. “Thanks, Ellie. Hopefully Griselda gives us a second chance.”

“She will, I’m sure of it,” you boast.

“We’ll be around later, but we’ll call Griselda up first, okay?” says Athena. “See you around.”

With that, the two of them leave. Denise looks rather skeptical. “I’m not sure if Griselda will let it happen. You think she will?” You shrug. Anyone’s game to be honest. It’s all about whether they’re willing to accept what happened did happen and move on.

“Miss McPherson!” Miss McPherson is looking through reports on a clipboard outside of the hangar. There, you see the tanks being worked on, washed by some of their crews, and some of the foreign commanders working as well. “Hey there.”

“Miss Zumwalt, good to see you,” she says. “Need something?”

You shrug. “Ehm. Well, not really.” Miss McPherson tilts her head. “Listen, Miss McPherson. I was wondering if we could talk about what happened with you and your crew.” Miss McPherson freezes for a second, before tilting her head in confusion. “I want to see if maybe I could get you all together again. Reunite the crew you know?”

She squints. “… for what? We’re old, Miss Zumwalt. We can’t drive tanks anymore, we certainly don’t have a Lazarus Pit to dunk ourselves in to restore our youth. We can’t help your team.”

“I’m not asking that you help. I just figured it’d help you guys out,” you say. You look at Denise and tell her to stay for a second, then take Miss McPherson’s arm and start walking her along in private. “Listen. I know being kicked out from Tankery and being blacklisted and everything hurt. I understand that now, sort of. I just want to help you and your girls move past that.”

She sighs, folding her arms. “You know, Miss Zumwalt. That is extremely nice of you. I’m not sure though how you intend to help us move past it. Dottie’s here, yes. But the others…”

“Are they here on the ship?” you ask.

“… Yes. But we don’t talk,” says Miss McPherson. “Deedee’s working in the school kitchen, Sandy’s advising the Hall Monitors, and Emily is a janitor. It’s a very diverse set of jobs we’re all working here.” Hm. Well, saves you time on traveling you suppose. “What are you planning?”

“We’re going to straighten ya out!”

“This’ll fix you!”

You find Hall Monitor’s O’Keere and O’Leary beating the everloving fuck out of a broken parking meter with their telescopic batons outside of the Hall Monitor station above deck. The meter slowly is beaten back straight with their batons. “Alright, alright, that’s fecking enough. Innit there another one on 6th?” asks O’Keere.

“O’Keere.” They turn to you, curious. “We’re looking for Sandy Sandusky. Do you happen to know where she is?”

“Oh, Inspector Sandusky?” asks O’Keere. “Yeah, she’s inside in her office.”

With that, you, Denise, and Miss McPherson step into the Hall Monitor station. With some more helpful directions from other Hall Monitors, you find Inspector Sandy Sandusky’s office on the top floor. You knock on the door. “Inspector Sandusky? It’s Commander Zumwalt. Can we talk?”

“Come in,” says Miss Sandusky. You step inside to see Sandy Sandusky behind a desk, looking at reports behind a set of reading glasses. She wears a dark blue uniform matching one of LGA’s Chief Inspectors, reserved only for the adult staff on LGA. “Commander. What can I dooooo…” She sees Miss McPherson standing in the doorway. “… Mattie?”

“Sandy.” Miss McPherson stands there, awkwardly. “You’ve… aged surprisingly well for a police inspector.”

Miss Sandusky shrugs. “Eh. You get married yet, Mattie?” Miss McPherson shakes her head. “That’s a shame.”

“Inspector Sandusky.” Miss Sandusky smiles to you, leaning back in her seat. “I was hoping you and Miss McPherson, and the rest of your old crew could uh… get together and talk things out. Bring the band back together so to speak. With FleetFest on, there’s a whole fairground of things to do, some of the commanders are having fun as well, we could-“

Miss Sandusky raises her hand, stopping you. “I’m going to stop you there and say I would love to.” Oh. Really? You grin. “Have you gotten the other girls?”

“No. We came to you first,” says Miss McPherson. “You’re really that eager to come around and see everyone again?”

“Of course.” Miss Sandusky grabs her coat from the coatrack and smiles at you two. “It’ll be a chance to catch up, play some games, shoot the breeze!” She punches the air near Miss McPherson, making her flinch. “Maybe even see who lost their stuff in the years.” Wow, that was easy. “I’ll go call the others!”

“Wait.” Miss McPherson grabs Miss Sandusky’s wrist, stopping her. “You’re really-“

“I am, really,” says Miss Sandusky. “Don’t worry. It’s no sweat. What’s done is done, right?”

“… Right.”

“Come on.” Miss Sandusky grabs your shoulder and pushes you out the door. “And you, Commander Zumwalt. You gotta tell me about your exploits. I’ve been watching you on the tele, I’m impressed with what I’ve been seeing so far.”

“Thank you. It’s obviously not what Miss McPherson and your crew have done in the past,” you say.

Miss Sandusky grins, folding her arms. “Oh well, you know. It’s not much to brag home about. Tankery in our time is a little bit different from yours. Way more uncomfortable, way more unsafe too. I once broke my hand when our tank got flipped onto its side once. Not to mention the flamethrower tanks!”

You look back. Miss McPherson looks a little skeptical. But hey, you’ve got Sandy now. The other two should come in quickly as well.

You arrive at the fair grounds. There you find lots of girls milling about and having some fun with the festivities. You even see the Poles helping promote the team with some fliers and a lot of shouting. “Donate, support, join us!” yells Serafina. “The NATO team needs you now! Come on, cowards!” Yeah, that’s not going to help for now.

You, Miss Sandusky, Denise, and Miss McPherson stand around. “Hm, I called them like an hour ago,” says Miss Sandusky. “They should be here by now.”

“Sandy.” Miss McPherson looks unamused at Miss Sandusky. “You ever consider that maybe the others don’t really want to talk to either of us anymore? Especially with what happened?”

“That happens decades ago,” says Miss Sandusky. “We gotta put it past us anyway. I’m sure you haven’t.” Miss McPherson is quiet at that. “Oh look! Emily!” You find Emily Emerson, still wearing the plain utility greys of a janitor walking. Her black hair is a little frayed and she certainly has some wrinkles about her face. But she looks just as young as the others. “Em! Good to see you!” Miss Sandusky hugs Miss Emerson.

“Eh. Good to see you too, Sandy.” Miss Emerson doesn’t look too happy to be here, as if she were forced to come here. “And uh… Mattie.” Miss McPherson nods.

“I called up Dottie and Deedee too,” says Miss Sandusky. “They should be here pretty soon.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Miss Emerson glances at her phone, clearly not very interested in being here.

“How about we check what the Poles are we doing?” The five of you walk through the crowd and find the Poles. “Serafina.” Serafina smiles, handing you a flyer. “This is really nice of you, taking the initiative to advertise the team.”

“Of course!” says Serafina. “It’s our duty after all! We must help Griselda in any way we can!”

“Got any donations or new team members or anything?” you ask.

“… well no,” says Serafina. “In fact a lot of people seem to be ignoring us.”

“That’s a shame,” says Miss Sandusky. “We could probably help with your advertisements.”

“How?” The Poles all crowd around Miss Sandusky, now infinitely awed by her. Miss Sandusky rolls up her sleeve, then points to one of the carnival games. An air gun shooting gallery? She leads you all on.

Miss Sandusky plants down a five dollar bill. “Hey, carny!” The man manning the booth looks at Miss Sandusky. Disinterested. “Give me five rounds!” He shrugs, then hands a loaded air gun to Miss Sandusky. “Witness what a tank gunner can do!” she yells. She fires one shot, dead on target. Another shot, on target. Another shot, it ricochets off the wall and hits the target from behind. She holds the rifle behind her back, firing and smashing another target. And finally she holds the rifle with both eyes closed and with one hand.

That target goes down just as easily as the first one. The small crowd gathered around applauds Miss Sandusky. “That is how you draw a crowd,” says Miss Sandusky. Serafina bask in Miss Sandusky’s glory.

“Excellent shooting.” You all stop to look over at the new arrival. Meryl Hoffmeister.

“Yeah, for a granny.” Another arrival, Freya Ward.

“Hey, I’m not that old!” says Miss Sandusky.

“Yep! And with some bigger guns too!” Everyone seems interested now. “We have a spare tank so come on, anyone feel like joining up? If not, we could still appreciate some donations!” Serafina holds up a glass jar. And to that, people start throwing in spare change and some money for the team. The other Poles as well collect money from other bystanders as well.

Meryl smiles, looking to Miss Sandusky. “Where did you learn to shoot like that?” she asks.

“Self-taught,” says Miss Sandusky. “Plus, the 70s were a hell of a time to be into Tankery. You had to be accurate otherwise the flame tanks would be on you in seconds.”

“Flame tanks?” asks Freya. “They actually had those?”

“For a time. Then Yellowstone happened,” says Miss Sandusky. “Personally I disagree with the change but I guess collateral was too great.”

Meryl chuckles a little, then looks over at you. “You keep pretty strange friends, Ellie.” She looks back at Miss Sandusky, then gently thumps her on the arm. “You and me should get together at the hangar some time, show our skill with the big guns, yeah?”

“I’d like that,” says Miss Sandusky. Meryl and Freya walk away. “Any new recruits?” she asks.

“Y- no.” You deflate a little. Seriously? “Understandable around this time though,” says Serafina. “It’s right before classes. People are going to be wanting to go to the Club Fair first before they decide which club to join.” That’s fair you suppose. Would be nice to get that SU-100 crewed before you meet in battle with JWA.

Miss Emerson folds her arms, sighing. “Are we done here?”

“Aw, Em.” Miss Sandusky pouts. “I thought you were having some fun.” Miss Emerson shrugs, grunting. “Come on, let’s go find something for you to do.” Miss Sandusky grabs Miss Emerson’s hand, making her flinch before the two hurry off into the fairgrounds by themselves.

Miss McPherson sighs. “Dottie and Deedee aren’t coming.”

“Oh? Why’s that?” you ask.

“Well, Dottie can make the excuse that she’s the Commissioner. Deedee though…” Miss McPherson shrugs at that, frowning. “She took the blacklisting the hardest I think.”

Miss Emerson simply stands there, bemused but trying not to look so. “… on second thought, we can just leave them here. Fine. Deedee should be in the school’s kitchen.”

Right then, off you go!

“Uh, Chef Dillon is not taking visitors at this moment,” says the cashier at the register. The school’s cafeteria was empty, save for some faculty taking dinner here. “She’s kind of busy right now managing clean up.”

Miss McPherson folds her arms. “She doesn’t even have time for an old friend?”

The cashier looks back, then leans forward. “I know about you, Miss McPherson. Truth be told, I think you’re the second-to-last person she wants to see.”

“I insist,” says Miss McPherson. “We-“

“Hey, cashier!” Miss Dillon steps out from the kitchen to the register. “I need the reports on how much money we made today and-“ She stops when she sees Miss McPherson. Miss Dillon was dressed in the white uniform of a chef, with a black apron to boot. Her scraggly red hair was done up in a bun inside of a hair net. “… Mattie?”

“Deedee.”

“Get the f-“ Miss Dillon sees you, then points out the door. “Get the heck out of my cafeteria! I don’t want to talk to you!” She storms backs into the kitchen.

Miss Dillon huffs. “For what, so you can make us get back into a tank and chat our way through the tournament again?” she says venomously. “We’re waaay too old for that, Commander. I am not going to let myself be dragged back into it again.” She opens her office door. “I appreciate what you do. And it is a very noble thing. But I will not be part of it. Now shove off!” She steps in and slams the door behind her. She quickly opens the door again and points to all the chefs. “You lot get back to work!” Everyone goes back to work, and immediately Miss Dillon slams the door shut again.

“Miss Dillon!” You knock on her door. “It’s not about doing Tankery again! It’s… it’s about you all, okay? It’s about moving past it!” You sigh, then lean against the door. “Miss Dillon. I know getting… well, what happened was really hard on you. It’d be hard on me too, on a lot of girls. But that happened decades ago. Come on.”

You frown as Miss McPherson steps in. “You can’t run from this you know,” you say. “You’d have thought that your past woud’ve caught up to you by now. Even with how hard the ITL tried to bury you. Come on. It’s not the end of the world.”

Miss Dillon opens the door, glaring ferociously at you. You step back, swallowing hard. “It –was- the end of the world for me. Now get out.” She slams the door again.

Miss McPherson places a hand on your shoulder. “Come on, Miss Zumwalt. Deedee needs time to think on it. You understand her position, right?”

“Yeah, I guess I do. She’s entitled to that position, even if I disagree with it.” With that, you and Miss McPherson decide to cut your losses and leave.

You, Denise, and Miss McPherson walk along the lonely streets back to the Tank Hangar. “I think I might take a walk for tonight. Reflect a little,” says Miss McPherson. “I want to see how much I can remember of our days in Tankery. I know I might view it with a rose tinted narrative yet… nostalgia is killing me.”

You look to Miss McPherson. “Do you want to go back into Tankery?”

“I would in a heartbeat,” she proclaims. “But I’m too old. Getting even older. No place in Tankery for a girl like me anymore.” She frowns heavily at that. Even she sees the conflict of the modern versus the tradition. “I remember seeing our faces when we were told we wouldn’t be doing Tankery anymore though. We definitely looked older then. It’s as if we just turned into old woman on the spot.”

“Must’ve hit all of you hard I suppose,” you say.

“It did. But it’s our just desserts for putting winning over fun,” says Miss McPherson. “I mean-… it’s a sport. We do eventually have to win at some point. It’s not a sport if everyone wins and nobody loses you know? Way I see it, we were just doing what came natural. Doesn’t excuse what we did though.”

“Right.” You nod, folding your arms.

Miss McPherson checks her watch, then says, “I’ll get out of your hair, Ellie. Good night.” With that, she crosses the street and starts walking away further out of your sight.

Denise steps up next to you. “Why are we helping them?” she asks.

“No reason not to,” you state.

You have to admit though. Part of them reminds you of your Mom. All of them deserved futures in Tankery. And yet both had it taken away from them.

Let’s hope you’re not next in line for that.
