You're Emilou Apacci, one of a handful of arrancars who've decided that you prefer to work together with shinigami rather than against them. Which of course means that you've got to help deal with their problems every so often, but that's not entirely a bad thing. You don't mind helping Lady Riku, and if you're really being honest with yourself you've actually be able to enjoy most of the fights. It may not be the 'highest' parts of your nature but it's probably not healthy to deny the facts.

And fact of the matter is, you're feeling really good about that one.

“The hell is this?” the man you struck groans, rubbing his gut where you buried your fist in it. “Some kinda freaky deer woman... holy shit are you a hollow!?”

“Yeah,” you grumble, “I am. And you're messing up my home, so do me a solid and either fuck off or die. Your choice, but either way get it over with quick.”

“Did I miss something!?” he shouts, seemingly still stuck on the point. “Why're hollows and shinigami working together?”

“I can explain it all,” you offer before a sonido-empowered charge, at the end of which you backhand him through a nearby wall. “Fuck you, that's why.”

“You're gonna regret that...” you hear his voice from the cloud of dust.

“I doubt it,” you grin, raising your fists. “Though you're welcome to try and make me.”

With a roar the dust clears, and the man's back on his feet. Spikes launch from a heavy wooden box on his back, each trailing a steel cable so that even if they miss they'll tangle you up and leave you vulnerable... or so he thinks.

“Bala!” you answer, sending a cloud of little round blasts of compressed reiatsu back at him. Most of the spikes are destroyed, but several tumble out of control and miss you entirely. The man's face contorts into a wild grin as the wires glow.

“Really?” you sigh before the remaining wires all explode around you.

The man laughs maniacally from below. “Serve you right for daring to attack Nobility, stupid holl...”

You interrupt him by dropping to the ground in front of him with a sonido, and his eyes widen a little as he makes a small, surprised noise.

“At the risk of sounding a lot like an anime villain, I should be training right now...” you mutter, contemplating the point.

You can hear Gin sigh from a distance. “Don't you do it.”

Those three words settle it. You fold your arms behind your back.

“I don't know what this 'anime' thing is,” the intruder sneers, “but if you mean to say you're gonna fight me with a handicap I think we've found the first thing I'm gonna make you regret.”

“Whaddya mean?” you taunt with a devious grin. “I thought you started off 'handicapped'...”

“And there it is!” the man roars, firing another wave of projectiles at you. It seems like the reports were right... they use blanks as tools to fight. But you've also noticed that when you arrived there were none, probably due to Gin's involvement.

It seems that the longer they fight the more they attract these things to themselves, also serving to refuel their abilities.

You blast the spikes away again, only to find that you have to dodge a trio of daggers thrown by his long-haired accomplice.

Instinct says we should focus on the woman, because she hasn't done anything recently on text and that probably means she's up to something. Plus it's redirection on him, and she's probably weaker than him.

But I really want to read Apacci handing this guy his ass.

It seems hard to imagine how this guy's weapon is supposed to hit an opponent right in front of him, since it's firing upwards from on his back, so making good on your promise and kicking him to death seems like it's the best strategy. So instead of dodging the next series of spikes by going sideways or backwards, you use sonido to get right up in his face with a grin. His eyes widen as you lose sight of him, planting your forehead horn into his face. He staggers backwards, chin split and bleeding, but manages to throw a punch that you avoid by casually tilting your head.

Then he draws a new weapon: a sword that splits into multiple parts like a fan, which he sweeps at you forcing you to lean back and avoid it. Despite the surprise attack you still keep your hands stubbornly behind your back.

“Take me seriously, dammit!” the man shouts. “Benin, support!”

You sidestep around the edge of the man's spinning weapon just before an arrow strikes it, aimed at where you'd been standing, and for his trouble you pivot on your toe and deliver a bone-shattering kick to his left arm that deforms the bicep with a loud snap.

“How'd that go for you?” you smirk as he takes a shunpo back from you. Your smirk doesn't fade as another arrow strikes a barrier which springs into existence at the back of your neck, both projectile and defense shattering each other from the impact.

Your response is to plant your foot firmly in the middle of Benin's stomach, leaving her curled up on herself as she falls to the ground.

“You know what?” the man glares at you, placing his blade against the inside of his arm just above where it's broken. “Fuck you!”

He severs the arm in a cloud of blood, then starts using a Blank to replace it. So... does this imply that they can't repair blunt damage, breaks, and bruises? Only lost limbs and slashes?

Well, that works for you just fine.

“That toy of yours looks pretty cool,” you muse, looking at the man's sword. “Let's see how it stands up to mine...”

Shutting your eyes, you focus your reiatsu intently outside your body, concentrating it first in a line, then into a thin blade as you pour even more energy into it. Eventually you open your eyes to see a floating sword of hardened reiatsu floating in front of you.

The man watches with wide eyes, taking an instinctive step back. “What the hell is that?”

“Espada Ardiente,” you reply, hands still held behind your back as you test your mental control of the blade you've created. “It's a sword.”

“I can see that.”

The flaming sword of reiatsu slices through the incoming projectiles as you charge the man. Each of its swings meets the man's own fan-like blade, leaving him wide open for you to continue kicking at his legs and sides, each blow wearing him down bit by bit as the bruises and contusions add up. All the while you refuse to use your hands.

“I can't hit her like this!” Benin calls out as she manages to stagger to her feet. “You need to get clear of her!”

That's not going to happen. Your Espada Ardiente continues to keep the swordsman's weapon occupied while you hit him with blow after blow that he won't be able to regenerate from, and he grows visibly frustrated at his movements slow.

“I'm done,” he grumbles as you dodge his counterattacks effortlessly. “I'm done being made a fool of by you and the damn shinigami.”

“You know it didn't have to be like this,” you observe with a frown. “Really, your plan was to attack an enemy with vast numerical superiority starting by brutalizing the one Captain who'd have been willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.”

“You brought this embarrassment on yourselves.”

“Then I'm at least gonna take you out with me,” the man replies as he lowers his own weapon, allowing Espada Ardiente to trace a thin line across his chest and shoulders. Not deep enough to kill him outright, but it'd be fatal without someone to heal him.

“See you in the fiery depths of Hell, arrancar bitc...”

And in perhaps the last insult, he induces the Blanks around him to explode before he can spit out his last words. The blast rocks the entire area, crushing several walls and forcing Gin to leap clear and sending the woman called Benin fleeing for her life. You on the other hand are safely hidden away behind a barrier made from Cero.

“He died as he lived I guess,” you muse.

That leaves you with a decision to make: you can either chase down the fleeing Ryōdoji woman and try to kill or capture her, or you can just let her go. You're honestly not sure what she'd even tell you anyway, and if she escapes that should mean the last of them will probably be forced to act. That way you can finally meet them head-on and end this pointless fight.

But would that be the right thing to do? You still don't even really know what their grievances are, what their supposed crimes were. Would hunting her down make you no better than a regular hollow after all?

“So what're you thinkin' here, Miss Appaci?” Gin asks curiously when he joins you near the epicenter of the Blanks' explosion.

>We should capture and interrogate her. I want to know what the point of this was.
>We should kill her now. If we let her go we'll just end up killing her later anyway.

Gin takes up a stance, drawing his zanpakuto from its sheath and holding it carefully in both hands with its edge facing upwards.

“Shoot to kill, Shinsō!” he declares, causing his sword to extend like a bullet into a high arc through the air. And unlike his normal attacks he continues to extend the blade, and after a few moments frowns.

“This is takin' a while,” you grumble.

“This doesn't usually happen,” Gin grins, still sending Shinsō in a higher and higher arc. “She's a little quicker than I anticipated is all.”

“Hang on.”

A few awkward seconds later the blade stops. “There we are.”

“You finally got her?” Kūkaku jokes. “Sure it wasn't just a building?”

“No, that was definitely her,” Gin replies carefully. “There's a big difference between stabbing a person and a building at this distance.”

“I'm not gonna get into that at all,” you shrug. “Let's go get her.”

“You two have a handle on it,” Kūkaku sighs, rubbing the back of her neck. “Give her a punch from me.”

“Oh, I'd be happy to,” you tell her before taking off after Gin.

It takes a few minutes to reach the hobbled Ryōdoji woman, who seems to have crawled her way over to a low wall to lean against. Her Achilles tendon's been neatly severed, and there aren't enough Blanks around to heal the damage.

“You...” she growls angrily like a cornered animal.

“We don't even know what our ancestors did!” Benin spits bitterly, glaring straight at Gin. “It was a thousand years ago! All of you keep complaining about how unfair it is to punish you for what your ancestors did, so what about us? What have we done to deserve being banished?”

“That's no excuse,” Gin replies, his usual flippant tone suddenly gone. “We're fighting you cause of what you've done. If you wanted to be treated better than your ancestors you shoulda met us halfway and been better than them.”

“But you didn't, didja? And this is what it got you.”

“At least you should be able to understand,” Benin persists, turning her gaze to you. “You must've been a Menos, right? Are you responsible for what all the hollows you are did? Are you somehow a criminal for eating them? Is being a hollow somehow your own fault, or is it the shinigami who failed to help you pass on in time? Who failed to protect you from becoming a hollow in the first place?”

“There was one who gave us a chance,” you growl angrily. “Several chances actually, and she even got the other Captains to give us a chance.”

“And which saint was this Captain of yours,” Benin replies bitterly.

“The one your... son, was it? She was the one he nearly killed with that cheap shot if his,” you tell her. For a moment, it seems like she's begun to realize what a colossal mistake that initial move was... though of course she doesn't actually know the full extent of what she's done or how badly it's pissed a lot of people off.

“You have no right to go through with this,” you tell her grimly. “Tell me how to stop whatever it is you're doing and maybe the Central 46 will let you and the rest of your people off easier.”

“I have no need for your pity,” Benin spits. “And there's only two of us left anyway. We may as well be dead.”

“And so your plan's to kill as many of us as you can before you die?” Gin sighs. “That doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot, you didn't even succeed in killing Riku with the cheapest possible shot.”

You are Shihōin Yoruichi, mistress of the Onmitsukidō and Captain of the Second Division. And if there's anything you hate it's having shit intelligence to make your decisions with, a sentiment compounded by the fact that you're supposed to be in charge of the Seireitei's spies and vast intelligence-gathering apparatus.

“Ma'am!” one of your masked subordinates announces at the door to your office. “Captain Ichimaru is here to deliver a prisoner.”

“Send him in,” you order, taking a sip of freshly-brewed green tea and setting the cup aside.

A few moments later your adoptive son brings in a purple-haired woman with a pronounced limp. “Hi there. Brought you something!”

“I see that,” you nod. “Who is she?”

“One of the Ryōdoji,” he tells you cheerfully. “There were a couple more, but... well... you know.”

“You killed them didn't you?”

“Not me personally,” Gin admits rather sheepishly. “Apacci, aunt Kūkaku, and I kinda split the work.”

“Well then, thanks for the effort,” you nod. “I'll take things from here if you don't mind.”

“She'll be in good hands?” Gin smirks.

“If you're trying to get information out of me you're wasting your time,” she spits. “I'm not gonna tell you anything.”

“You must be dumber than I gave you credit for,” you reply calmly, taking a sip from your teacup. “That was a taunt. I haven't even finished my tea yet, it's too early to get down to business.”

“You... what?” she asks, confused about your apparent lack of concern.

“Well it's simple, if I wanted to make you talk I already know how to do it,” you shrug dismissively. “And I've got the motive not to hold back... you people have been coming after my family pretty hard. You've made it personal.”

“So why don't you just get it over with and start torturing me already?” she demands. “I know you want to.”

“You have no idea,” you admit. “But the entire reason I agreed to take this job in the first place is because I can be better than that. I want to be better than that. And for the sake of the family I want to avenge I will continue to be better than that.”

“So you're not gonna interrogate me?” she sneers. “How spineless.”

You flash her a devilish, almost Cheshire-like grin. “Oh, I never went that far. I just said I wasn't gonna torture you.”

“You had a kid, right? The one who hurt my wife and daughter?”

The Ryōdoji woman's face contorts with rage. “The one your bitch of a daughter murdered, yes.”

“Who is the father?”

She takes a moment to try and collect herself. “What do you mean?”

“I mean you haven't added the man who fathered your child to your list of grievances,” you explain, “so clearly he's either been dead for a long time or he's still alive. I'm guessing the latter since nobody matching the description of a 'ringleader' has shown their face yet and the planes are still overlapping.”

“Am I right so far?”

“Condescending bitch...”

“I'll take that as a yes.”

“So the father's still out there, alive” you continue, “and you're still willing to endure torture for his sake. So you're hopelessly loyal to him, that much is clear. You may even love him. Either way he's important to you, same way your son was important to you.”

“Where is this going?” she demands. “If you have a point spit it out.”

“He's going to die,” you summarize calmly. “If he succeeds in crashing the two planes together he'll be killed. If he shows his face down here I'll rip it off and nail it to my office door as a trophy. I've got neither the reason nor any particular desire to spare his life... and believe me, you have no idea the power I have at my disposal.”

“You're bluffing,” she narrows her eyes. “No Captain can be as powerful as our leader...”

“So your leader's still out there,” you muse, reaching across to grab the Ryōdoji woman by the forehead. “Tell me, how does he stack up? Hm?”

You allow some of your reiatsu to wash over her, a look of absolute dread spreads across her face as her eyes widen in unspoken horror. She tries and fails to form a coherent sentence.

“And that's before I release shikai, Bankai, or resurreccíon,” you tell her, staring straight into her helpless, blank stare.

“Or what?” she manages to ask.

“I have two separate zanpakuto,” you hiss, leaning in closer. “So is hubby looking a little less invincible now?”

“This... proves nothing.”

“If you have any desire to protect what's left of your Clan, to save your dear leader's life... you'll answer my questions without making me so much as raise my voice,” you declare with a smirk. “See? I told you I know exactly what I'm doing.”

“Tell me where I can find him,” you insist, leaning back in your seat. “Point me in the right direction and I'll beat the everloving shit out of him... but I won't kill him, because you decided to help.”

“He would never forgive me,” the Ryōdoji replies. “Avenging our clan... our family... it's all he has.”

“That's the lovely thing about the Maggots' Nest,” you tell her with a sharp stare, “and that is where you'll both be going... you'll have nothing but time. Use it to work out your relationship, discuss your mistakes, or just read the entire literary canon of the Japanese language, I don't really care which. Much beyond taking you both in and reversing this disaster you're causing with the Valley of Screams and it's not my concern anymore.”

“But it is my duty to stop you, and I intend to do my duty well.”

After a few moments, the woman answers. “In the Valley of Screams. There's a high point, visible from the entry aperture, a plateau higher and wider than the rest. That was our base of operations... our home. He'll be there.”

“You may be doing the right thing right now,” you muse sternly, “but it's for the wrong reasons. That makes this easier.”

“What...”

She doesn't even see you move, barely even realizes that you've palmed her face. Then the back of her head meets the floor with a sharp crack, her eyes lose their focus and close. She's left unconscious.

At the noise a guard enters your office. “Lady Shihōin, is everything alright?”

“Take her to the Maggots' nest and keep her bound,” you order. “Before she wakes up. I have business to attend to.”

Now that you know where he is, there's one other outstanding issue: the number of blanks you can probably expect when you arrive. That will allow you to focus solely on beating the hell out of your actual target, so what you're really looking for is a brawler or two... someone willing to charge headfirst into danger for the sake of a fight.

So you pretty much know already where you should start looking.

The Eleventh Division's grounds are full of disappointment, since they're not the ones on the frontline at the moment. You quickly find Third Seat Madarame sparring with some of his Division members as the Fifth seat watches calmly.

“Well, to what do we owe this?” Madarame asks staring at you appraisingly. “The Captain of Second Division all the way out here?”

“We're clearly being honored,” the Forth Seat declares. “For her to bless us with her presence like this.”

“I need your help,” you admit. “Could be dangerous. You might even die in a fiery explosion.”

“You're sayin' a bunch of stuff I like the sound of,” Madarame admits, sheathing his zanpakuto. “Where and why?”

“We're going to go beat up the guy responsible for that,” you explain, pointing at the hole in the sky through which Hueco Mundo is clearly visible. “I need you to kill off an unknowable number of suicide-bombing memory-less souls, each of which is easily capable of killing a typical shinigami.”

“I'm in,” Madarame replies.

“Me too,” the Fifth Seat agrees, rising from where he's been sitting. “I hate the idea of letting you have all the fun to yourself.”

“That was... easy,” you muse, quietly wondering about their apparent willingness to follow you on a crazy mission that for anyone less than a Lieutenant could very well prove to be one-way.

“We've been left out of a lotta the good fights recently,” Madarame admits with a scowl. “It's time we got a chance to change that, otherwise our skills'd go to shit.”

“He has a point,” the Fifth seat agrees, brushing his bangs clear of his face dramatically. “The Zaraki Division's not about to let itself get shown up, especially not by the Ninth Division... again.”

“So we're in.”

Wait, does the Eleventh have a Fourth Seat right now? I didn't think they did but there's a bunch of other changes to the organization that I may have missed something.

I do love their reaction to Yoruichi showing up. Danger to life and limb, dying in an explosion? Why are we still here?

It's a waste and a bad idea. What happens if they seal the valley of screams somehow? How about Aizen decides "You know, maybe this is an ideal opportunity" and just nukes the place?

Over-saturation of assets is never a good idea.

>>
>>1480172
1. We're sending people to fight the suicide bombers either way, so more people spread out to draw their attention and keep them from clustering is better.
2. Aizen may have known about this happening, but he has no reason to just "nuke the place," nor has he likely set anything up which would allow him to do so, because not only is there no reason, there also would have been little no time to have done so.
3. What difference is there between attacking all the strong people when they're clustered in one place as opposed to another? Why wouldn't he have attacked us already when we *weren't* ready for combat then?
4. We have lots of really experienced kido users that can prevent anyone from just "shutting the door" on the valley of screams, and having more kido experts there to help prevent it isn't going to hurt.
5. Chill the fuck out, bro
>>
>>1480198
>keep them from clustering
Where it would be easy for someone with wide-area and long-ranging attacks to handle them with little to no issue.

>no reason to nuke it
A huge chunk of enemy forces in an isolated place is not a reason?
>he hasn't set anything up
There are a few spells that would do great, and he could send even more disposable minions in to help. Bonus points since if we send "everyone" that means you want to send some fighters who would be very outclassed and others that don't play well with others. Basically anyone outside of the ninth is going to have absolute garbage teamwork skills save for a handful of people, two of which are now going.
>ready for combat
If you go to fight a goblin you probably don't expect to fight a dragon. Ready for one thing doesn't mean you are ready for another.

>that can stop anyone from "shutting the door"
Because the guy who has been in there the longest and can control the things that exist there can just be casually blocked by random schmucks. Outside of Kisuke and Kaoru no one really fits the bill.

>No, don't use your head. Let's just DO THINGS.

Maybe we should just go full-force gank Aizen right now, then? He can't be ready for it since this weird ass shit is happening, right? That means he is 100% powerless. Hey, how about we bring in a favor from Hell, too? Fuck it, make Orihime bring OMG back from skeleton form and make him fight, as well? Why not, right?

To summarize, stop being stupid.
>>
>>1480254
>Where it would be easy for someone with wide-area and long-ranging attacks to handle them with little to no issue.
Well gee lad, why bring anyone at all then. They might get hurt or something.

>A huge chunk of enemy forces in an isolated place is not a reason?
The place does not matter. A huge chunk of enemy forces is a huge chunk of enemy forces whether it's in the seireitei or right next door.

This would literally be the equivalent of sieging the seireitei. If he was going to do it, he would have done it already.

>If you go to fight a goblin you probably don't expect to fight a dragon. Ready for one thing doesn't mean you are ready for another.
You are simply assuming aizen would advance and rush in. "He could potentially show up" is your entire argument. It doesn't matter, because it's no different from simply attacking the seireitei if everyone's there anyways.

>Because the guy who has been in there the longest and can control the things that exist there can just be casually blocked by random schmucks. Outside of Kisuke and Kaoru no one really fits the bill.
Because kisuke and kaoru (and the kidou corps) don't exist, right? So they just don't count.
Further, you have multiple people who can open garganta either way, so you're not trapped even if they do.

To summarize, stop being a killjoy and try to have some fun once in a while, faggot.
It's just stories on the internet, calm down.
>>
>>1480438
>it's the same as attacking the seireitei
Absolutely false. A big field of fucking nothing is in no way the same as a place with a fortress with a magical forcefield around it as well as various other infrastructure.

If your entire argument for doing something is "Lol it's fun" then you shouldn't be allowed to make decisions.

We know Aizen probably won't show up but that doesn't mean you should casually disregard it since the characters in the story won't just assume there is no chance of it happening. It's always possible even if we know King won't do it.

And even if they won't be trapped permanently he only needs a split second to close the place off and suicide bomb the entire valley with the blanks. All of these are dick moves that probably won't happen, but you have to acknowledge they are possibilities and that the characters in the story know it too.

There's a lot of stupid shit we could do because it's fun but we don't. Have a little respect for the quest instead.
>>
>>1480495
Lad, don't even start.
We all know that anyone who isn't a captain, lieutenant or commando doesn't matter, and that if you are one of those things, 99% of your fights take place in a field or in midair, and any object nearby that hasn't been leveled soon will be.

If you don't want to have fun, why the fuck are you here? Respect for the quest? What the fuck are you smoking?
Drink bleach.
>>
>>1480513

I missed these threads, but I kind of feel like all the righteous anger on our part is kind of... misplaced? Like yeah these guys refuse to stop being dicks, but it seems like we're getting all vengeful because one guy, who seemed to be having second thoughts, one-shotted the wrong person.
>>
>>1480819
Well, maybe he should've second thought a little harder about taking the one character with all the social links out of commission.

Such as, "I know my power works great on some of the older ones, but I wonder if there's a really badass younger one who could really wreck my shit?"
or, "Now that I'm out on my own, I wonder if maybe I should try just talking to this person who clearly had an opportunity to assassinate me and deliberately chose not to?"
or even, "Hey I wonder if these guys even remember my clan in the first place? I should ask about that."
or how about, "Man it sure would suck to lose any one of my family members. Oh dang, these other people all also have families. I probably shouldn't try to just immediately kill any of them. That would be a dick move."

Pretty sure any of those would've averted the current situation.

“What are you doing in my teahouse?”

The owner is taken aback when the street urchin looks up at him with an appraising glare, not the response of a rabid dog barking at a passer-by but more like a wolf. A patient and disciplined hunter of far more dangerous beasts than a pudgy shopowner, content for now to overlook a perceived transgression but ready to kill if the offense is repeated.

“Ordering tea,” the woman replies with a calm face, a neutral expression disguising a deeper, abiding rage towards anyone who speaks down to her. “I can pay, if you're concerned, but on the sole condition you treat me as any other customer.”

“And why should we serve you?” the owner persists, working up just enough self-righteous indignation to continue the argument. “This happens to be a very well-regarded establishment.”

“I know,” the woman replies, eyes still boring holes straight through the owner. “That's why I came here, though my own regard seems to keep lessening every time you open your mouth.”

“Are you going to serve me, or will I have to let myself into your kitchen and make my own?”

“You wouldn't,” the shopowner tries to convince himself. “Not even you could be that much of a barbarian.”

“Grinning ear to ear,” she insists sternly.

An old, grizzled-looking man in black at a nearby table chuckles to himself. “Owner, I would serve her tea if I were you.”

“Old man?” the owner asks, clearly taken aback.

“The young lady could have leveled your shop after any one of the insults you offered her, and yet she has chosen not to,” he clarifies. “It would be wise to serve her and count your blessings.”

The woman quietly requests a mid-range oolong with a tray of snacks, then turns and offers the old man a curt nod of acknowledgment. “Thank you, stranger.”

But the old man's gaze remains fixed on the shabby-looking newcomer even as she eats and drinks, until finally she can no longer ignore it.

“Did you lose something over here?”

“You possess impressive spiritual power,” he replies carefully, “which would be the envy of most shinigami. What is your name, young woman?”

“Riku,” she replies. “No family name, but I'm from Kusajishi.”

“Riku?” he muses. “Written with the characters 'Officer Nine' or in some other fashion?”

“Can't read kanji very well,” Riku admits, sipping at her oolong. “So I write it in kana.”

“I see,” he mutters, clearly amused. “Become a shinigami.”

“I refuse,” Riku retorts calmly.

Without warning the old man rises and throws a punch at Riku's head, which she avoids by leaning to one side and kicking off the ground, body briefly flickering as if disappearing and reappearing several feet away. At this, the old man seems remarkably less amused.

“That technique,” he grumbles darkly, his bent frame straightening as old muscles strain like those of a great beast slowly stirring into full animation. “I am glad that I sought to test your responses, though the answer I earned for it was to a different question. That was not shunpo, but hirenkyaku... I have seen it many times before.”

“And what of it, old man?” Riku demands, draining the last of her tea and setting the cup down on a totally different table from her own. “Hell, what're you even talking about? Shunpo? Hirenkyaku? You're spouting nonsense words.”

“I sense no lie in your words,” he admits carefully, stature seeming once more to diminish somewhat in tandem with his apparent agitation. “However let me make this clear: after seeing you use such a technique, you have two choices. You will serve under my direct authority or you will die here.”

“You drive a hard bargain, shinigami,” Riku scowls, her eyes searching for a weakness or vulnerability which she does not find. “Who are you really?”

“Head Captain Yamamoto Genryūsai,” he growls, glare falling on Riku with an almost unbearable weight. “The highest-ranking officer of the Gotei 13. In a thousand years no shinigami born has ever rivaled my strength.”

“You have me at a disadvantage here,” Riku replies wearily, as if struggling even to respond under the immense pressure being directed at her. “Fine, I'll comply on one condition."

The Head Captain's face remains impassive. "Amuse me."

Late in Karakura town's summers, the heat sometimes gives way to afternoon rain. It's been that way for decades at least, ever since the streets were mostly dirt and the houses wood, and although now the 'town' looks more like the middle of Tokyo in miniature the smell of rain is the same old nostalgic scent.

“Ah, I've found you!” Kisuke exclaims, sitting on the back porch of his candy shop where he's found Yoruichi tucked in under the eaves, in her human form for once. “What a lovely sound, isn't it?”

Yoruichi perks her ears up slightly to listen to the drumming of the rain on the roof tiles and the small yard, and nods in agreement. “Sure beats the hell out of traffic noise. If there's one thing I hate about living in the world of tomorrow it's that.”

“Drinking this early in the afternoon?” he jokes as his old friend takes a sip of sake.

“I'm feeling a little off,” Yoruichi admits, setting the small cup aside for a moment. “I get like this sometimes and I don't know why. It's weird.”

“And you even poured me a cup?” Kisuke asks, raising an eyebrow. Sure enough Yoruichi's gotten out two cups again, filling the second and allowing it to sit as she drinks.

She glances down at it, as if just noticing what she's done. “Odd, I can't remember why I did that.”

“Are you feeling alright?”

Yoruichi shrugs. “I have no reason not to be. Why?”

“It's just...” Kisuke begins before seeming to think better of it. “Nevermind. Forget I said anything.”

The former Onmitsu executive stares at him quizzically, but says nothing. However when Kisuke reaches for the spare sake cup her hand stops him in a movement that seems to even take her by surprise.

“Okay, I'll get my own cup,” Kisuke sighs, standing up and turning to head back inside. “Since that one's apparently off limits.”

After he leaves to get a third cup Yoruichi stares at the full spare as the rain falls harder. She knows she has no reason to be upset, that things are going about as well as could possibly be hoped at this point. Nobody's died recently, the world is exactly as she thinks it should be.

So why does she keep getting the feeling that she's lost something?
