You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

The next couple of days passed by without TOO much trouble. You and the rest of your ever growing squadron performed some more patrols and minor raids against the Abyssals, but the seas strangely enough had been largely quiet. Most of the shipgirls and the general public took this as a sign that momentum int he war had shifted back to humanity, and that the the conflict was reaching an inevitable end. However, quite a few, particularly the Admiral and the Captain, were quite adamant that the Abyssals were merely regrouping behind the safety of the Storm Wall.

At the base, however, things were a bit more eventful. As predicted, the Russian ambassador stopped by the base and threw quite the fuss, but was ultimately rebuffed by the Admiral who played dumb and directed him to complain to the President or the Japanese government. Meanwhile, the Russian shipgirls would not be seeing the frontline for the time being since pretty much all of them needed a serious overhaul due to years of neglect and improvised maintenance. You wryly note Shen and Akashi being impressed with Sukhbaatar's skills at improvisation, but a little less than enthused about the overall quality of her work, which was often rough and slipshod. There was going to be quite a lot of work to get her up to speed.

Right now, though, you were headed to the briefing room along with most of the base's shipgirls. Given the sheer attendance, you were sure that this was not going to be a regular patrol.

You decide to head straight for the briefing. At least Portland wouldn't keep nagging at you for being late all the time. You follow the stream of assorted shipgirls also heading there, exchanging greetings with some, avoiding a few others, and teasing a couple. It was always really fun seeing Yahagi fume whenever you greeted Yamato.

Soon enough, you were at the briefing room. You take a seat between Anna and Paz, who already seemed to have arrived before you. The other gathered shipgirls start taking their seats.

"Good morning everyone." The Captain gives a courteous nod.

"Good morning, Captain!" The shipgirls, including you, chime.

"As you have probably suspected, this is not an ordinary patrol, so I'll get straight to the point." He continues as she activates the projector. "In the past few weeks, we've begun noticing an odd trend. Abyssal raids and attacks have been steadily falling off, but our SIGINT resources have been reporting no drop in activity coming and going from the Dark Zones."

The image then flashes to show a series of red arrows winding their way throughout not just the Pacific, but also the Atlantic and various other seas around the world.

"What could they possibly be doing?" Nagato asks, concern on her face.

"We're not exactly sure what, but we have a good guess." The Captain switches to the next slide, which showed a capsized ship in a shallow bay, her stern just poking out of the water.

"As some of you may recognize, this is the wreck of Prinz Eugen." The Captain explains. "This photo was taken three months ago, and this was a photo taken at the same location yesterday."

The slide transitions, showing empty water where Prinz Eugen once was, the only evidence of her presence being a deep indent in the shallow ocean floor.

Immediately, there's nervous mutterings among the shipgirls before the Captain coughs loudly to quiet them.

"We have reason to believe that the Abyssals have been 'salvaging' wrecked warships. It may be possible they're running short on resources, but some of our advisors suspect more nefarious plans."

The Captain gives everybody a grim look.

"I know this is something that probably makes you uncomfortable, digging up your old hulls from the past, but we need to verify what they've taken what they haven't."

The slide then switches to three marked spots on the Pacific. You... you recognized at least one of them.

"I'll leave it up to your discretion to pick which area you want to recon." The Captain says as he steps back.

You bite you lip as you stand up.

"I'll go to Samar." You say.

"Are you sure?" The Captain asks as he gives you a wary look. "I know you have a history there-"

"I can handle it." You assure him.

"All right then." He nods.

And so the fleets are built. Heerman, Johnston, Haida, and Blyskawica. were the other destroyers to volunteer. Portland and Indy were also joining along with Iowa and Yamato. Finally, Paz would round out the force.

That was quite a lot of firepower, though. Especially since two the most powerful battleships in the fleet would be tagging along with you.

"Hey, are you sure about this, you two?" You ask Iowa and Yamato, who both smile.

"Hey, well, I feel kinda guilty never being there for you girls back during the War." Iowa explains. "I mean, if I were there, maybe you wouldn't have been sunk!"

"I feel that like last time, you and your sisters will get yourselves in trouble." Yamato says warmly. "Thought this time you'll have my guns at your disposal rather than the other way around."

You fight an urge to wipe a tear from your eye.

"All right, then." You nod as you look around. "Hey, where's White Plains?"

"She decided to bow out since Paz was coming along. Figured that she could give another group some air cover." Heerman explains. "I also think she doesn't really want to go back."

"Can't blame her." Johnston nods.

"But she didn't even get sunk." Haida points out.

"Yeah, well, it was a pretty shitty battle. I understand why she wouldn't want to go back." You sigh.

"Well, I think we have plenty of firepower anyways!" Blyskawica says confidently. "Assuming those kurwas even show up at all!"

"Yeah! I wanna show them a thing or two!" Paz grins. "Mom upgraded me with some new battleship parts so I can fight on the frontlines with you all!"

"Yeah, I'm itching to see what the new kid can do!" Iowa nods. "Don't let us down!"

"I won't!" Paz nods and salutes.

"She's so adorable for a carrier!" Yamato giggles.

Still, it kind of bothered you knowing that the Abyssals were going around digging up old shipwrecks. You're not sure why, but you had a feeling that the Captain knew more than he was letting on. And those "advisors"? You actually had a pretty good idea of who she was.

You still had time before shipping out...

You decide that you should just focus on the mission for now. After making your last equipment and Rig checks, everybody loads up on the waiting Osprey. Several other Ospreys were also taking off along with yours, each one carrying submersible drones to scout the ocean floor. You'd also have more air cover in the form of Navy P-8s to sniff for Abyssal movement.

"All right everyone, sit tight!" The pilot announces as the Osprey begins to take off.

"All right, we're almost to the LZ!" The pilot announces.

On cue, the loading ramp of the Osprey begins to lower as the Osprey drops altitude. In front, the other shipgirls begin disembarking, leaping off and into the water. All around, the other Ospreys go into hover mode as well as their crews begin to launch the drones.

However, before you head out, you pause. Something wasn't quite right. Now that the Osprey had been largely cleared out, you noticed one extra shipgirl presence on the Osprey...

You stomp over to the front of the Osprey and yank the copilot out of her seat.

"Ack!" She squeaks as her flight helmet falls off to reveal none other than Sam.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" You grimace. This was totally unexpected, but you couldn't say you were completely surprised.

"Like I'd let you all go off to Samar without me!" Sam glowers. "My hull's down there too, you know!"

"Yeah but, what about, well..." You frown, trying not to mention her anger issues out loud.

"That' won't be a problem." Sam grunts, not quite convincingly.

"Fuuuuuuuuuck, fine!" You groan. She was already out here, anyways. No point in trying to argue. "But if ya start getting out of line I'll smack the shit outta you myself!"

"Deal." Sam nods as she takes a running start and leaps off the ramp and to the water below.

Goddamn, there were already unexpected developments going. Hopefully this would be the only surprise. You finally Rig up and disembark.

Already, your squadron has already spread out into a standard search formation. They all knew their roles at this point. Paz was at the center of the formation, immediately flanked by Iowa and Yamato. Portland and Indy were a bit further out, but still well within visual range of Paz.

Finally, the destroyers were spread out in a wide picket, ready to spot any enemies that would come from above the water or below.

"Hoel, this is Heavy Cloud." You hear the P-8 orbiting above you speak through your radio. "We're picking up underwater movements to the north. Still several kilometers out, but it's almost definitely Abyssal activity."

"Got it, Heavy Cloud. Keep us posted." You nod.

"Oh, subs?" Sam grins and draws out her weaponized anchor. "How about we go hunter killer on their asses? We got plenty of destroyers to spare!"

Well, they were most likely scouts and probably not an immediately threat, but you also didn't really like the idea of Abyssal subs having free reign to probe your perimeter...

"Heerman, you're with us." You instruct. "We're gonna go hunt some subs."

"Roger that." Heerman nods as she pulls out of the defensive formation to join up with you and Sam.

You then activate your datalink, spreading your awareness out through the orbiting P-8 and Paz's planes that she had put up as CAP. Immediately, a big blob of contacts lights up under the water, making it easy to home in on it. Shit, that had to be a lot of subs packed together.

"How about we give them a little surprise?" Sam grins as she casually pulls out a depth charge from her Rig.

"We can flush out and take them out when they surface." Heerman says in agreement.

"Got it." You nod, queuing up two of your VLS cells which were holding ASROCs.

>FATE POINT USED
>You have no points remaining!

As Heerman and Sam start lobbing their depth charges at the contact, you send your pair of ASROCs into the sky, where they gain some altitude before arcing down and plunging into the water with brief splashes.

A few seconds pass before your feet feel the vibration of the explosions underwater. And you feel more vibrations as presumably secondary explosion and ruptured compartments starting going off-

And then the water EXPLODES in a geyser of filthy black oilbood, as if there was a massive balloon of the stuff just under the surface and you had just popped it. And within the thick, goopy substance, you could see Abyssal combat forms of all types, not just subs, coming pouring out. They don't fire right away, thank goodness. No doubt they were still in shock from the explosion.

"What the hell?!" Heerman shouts, echoing your thoughts. "We need to fall back!"

The Abyssals never even see it coming. Shells and torpedoes rain down as they try to recover from their sudden exposure. Carapace cracks and modules explode. To put icing on the cake, all of the collected oilblood erupts violently in a ball of flame, engulfing all of the hapless Abyssals in a roiling inferno.

"Holy SHIT." Sam gasps.

"You hogged all the fun!" Blyskawica whines as she finally catches up and stamps the butt of her lance angrily in the water.

"Don't celebrate just yet, Blys." Haida grins as she pats her fellow destroyer's shoulder. "Sonar's picking up more contacts. Looks like another big one heading away, and it's dragging two objects along with it."

"The grabbed a couple hulls?" You frown.

"That's right. Portland nods as she catches up. "The analysts are still trying to determine what hulls they took, but now we've confirmed the Captain's suspicions."

"Maybe we should fall back, then." Heerman glances over at the blazing inferno. "We've done our damage and completed our objective..."

Your sonar immediately pings with two contacts. Smaller than the large contact, but larger than an average Abyssal. You queue up two more ASROCs and and launch them, sending the two rocket propelled torpedoes into the water. A pair of dull thuds force the two newcomers to the top, and you immediately recognized them.

Those two damn Abyssal Submarine Princesses you saw in that vision. The ones that taunted you about Portland.

Fuck those bitches!

Immediately, the twin Princess start launching torpedoes and, surprisingly enough, planes. Abyssal reinforcements of various classes begin surfacing to back them up.

Paz's F-35s immediately dive down to engage them while the rest of your squadron opens fire. 5 inch, 8 inch, 16 inch, and 18 inch shells pound the Abyssal battleline, tearing apart cruisers and destroyers before they even have a chance to sneeze.

However, whiles one of the Sub Princesses and her battleship escorts, keeps Iowa and Yamato occupied, you can see the other trying to break off to attack Portland and Indy.

Meanwhile, Haida and Blyskawica tearing through a pair of destroyers trying to screen their advance, opening up a hole that Heerman, Johnston, and Sam were preparing to exploit.

You decide to trust that Heerman, Johnston, and Sam could handle things as you steer around to intercept the Sub Princess making a beeline for Portland and Indy. Portland is already moving to get a firing angle on her, as well as keeping the less experienced Indy behind her for protection.

Meanwhile, Paz's planes make their attacks, peppering the Sub Princess with tiny missile strikes, creating ugly pockmarks in her skin as they hit.

Meanwhile, you swing in behind the Sub Princess, intending to pincer her between yourself and Portland...

Fortunately, you, Portland, and Indy manage to bracket the Sub Princess and brutal crossfire. 8 inch and 5 inch shells punch into the Sub Princess. Not even her increased armor thickness could withstand such a volley at close range, and she gives an inhuman shriek as bits and pieces of her Rig are blown off.

Immediately, her sister responds to the shriek, speeding and grabbing the ailing Abyssal. Then both of them glare at you, before sinking under the waves.

"Damn, don't let them get away-" Portland tries to move forward when a huge rogue wave sweeps across the water, throwing all of you off balance as the Abyssal behemoth swoops in to take the dual Princesses away to safety, moving with a speed that completely caught you off guard.

And just like that, an eerie silence falls over the battlefield, the remaining Abyssals either having been destroyed or fled.

"Why did that Abyssal focus its efforts on us?" Indy wonders.

"Probably thought we were the most vulnerable." Portland sighs in relief. "Hoel, you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm good." You nod.

"Waaaaaah, I'm so glad you weren't hurt!" Paz rushes in and wraps herself around your waist. "That looked real close there!"

"It's always kinda close." You chuckle.

"Hey! Hoel!" Johnston waves at you. "That big Abyssal fish thingie dropped the hulls! You won't believe what they are!"

"What?" You ask.

"It's yours and Sam's!" Johnston grins. "Sam is absolutely FREAKING OUT over it!"

"I'm sure she is." You sigh as you see Haida and Heerman dragging away a very pissed off looking Sam.

"So, um, the Captain's sending over a team the secure the hulls, and he wants us to RTB." Johnston continues. "Do you, um, wanna see it before we leave?"

Seeing your own hull...

You're not sure how to feel about that.

"Yeah, I'm on my way." You sigh.

"Hoel, you don't have to do this." Portland reminds you out of concern.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine." You try to reassure her. "Just... one look and we'll be out of here, okay?"

"Whatever you say." Portland nods.

"Keep an eye on Paz, too." You gently get Paz to let go of you and place her next to Portland. "I'll be back soon!"

"W-wait!" Paz moves to go after you but is stopped by Portland, who puts a hand on her shoulder.

Well, it was the moment of truth...

You sail over to where Johnston is, where your, no, your hull's new resting place was. It looked like that when the Abyssals were forced to drop it, they did so in a much shallower area of the sea. You could actually see it from the surface of the water.

But looking at it now, all you could feel was a sense of... revulsion? No, nothing quite that strong, but you definitely felt a great deal of unease. Just locking your eyes on your mangled, rotting hull created a roiling storm of emotions, as well as a roiling storm of something in your gut as you fight the urge to vomit. Thankfully, you're able to manage that, but all the proud and ugly memories of this cursed place start flooding back, almost overwhelming you as you fall to your knees.

"Hoel, are you all right?" Yamato of all people comes rushing to your aid, kneeling beside you.

"Y-yeah." You sniff, wiping some tears from your eyes. "It's just.... it's just I'm dealing with some really heavy stuff right now."

"I understand." She nods as she glances down at your hull. "Come on, let's go home. I'll make you dinner to cheer you up!"

"Won't Yahagi get mad?"

"What she doesn't know won't hurt her!" Yamato winks.

"What about me? What about me?" Paz butts in.

"You can join us as well, Pacifica! And Anna, too!" Yamato gives you a knowing smile.

"Yes!" Paz whoops.

As everybody heads back to the extraction Osprey, you take one last look your hull. Hopefully it will find some peace in its new resting place...

>And that's it for tonight! Unfortunately, I'll be taking a break next week, so there won't be a thread next weekend! However, we should be back to our regular schedule afterwards. Don't forget Frontier Knight on Saturday!
