It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies. After an ordeal that involved Elves, the Wilde Jaege, and even more Elves, you finally made your way back to the warcamp, that was transferred to the world as well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

The Hospitallers, an order of knights from Malta, Priest-Knights who were trained in medicine, broke away from the Templar army after they slaughtered prisoners and innocents.

Player Pre-Thread Vote:

Should I change up the OP image more often or no?
>>
>>1472033
No, having the same OP image makes it easier to track down the quest in the catalog.
>>
>>1472033

Whatever floats your boat, a consistent image is more recognizable but I don't have a problem tracking down the quests that do switch them up, if you've got some sweet art you want to share go for it
>>
>>1472033
There's no need to change the OP image, it's easier to recognize the quest when I'm scanning the /qst/ page.

Also, any word on Fantasy Detective?

Here, in the Saint's war tent, you decide to be straightforward and to the point.

"The Templars killed prisoners without a chance to repent, and heathen without a chance to convert."

Coughing, St. Herard looks at you, surprised. "Tey wat?"

Setting his charcoal stick down on the table, he moves close to you, towering frame looming over you. Whispering, he practically growls out the next question.

"Did tey really do dis?"

There in the dim light of the Saints' tent, with the setting sun trying to peek in through the crack in the tentflap, you get the feeling of... unease. Partially because of the large bear of a man looming over you, and partially, because of the evening casting long shadows.

Mainly because of the large, menacing Norwegian looking at you with furious eyes.

However nervous you are, though, you don't let it affect you, or show on your face, and you nod.

"Yes, Saint, they did. I trust the word of my Brother in Christ, and the fury I saw in his face was righteous."

Herard stares at you, stony-faced, and walks to his seat at the head of the table. Sighing, he slumps down in his chair, covering his eyes with his hand.

"Tis' is complcat'd. Ah wish ah co'd pun'sh tem, but..."

He sighs once more, motioning to the air, as if gesturing to some unseen person.

"If t' Holy See doesn' af a probl'm wit it, ten ah don' neither."

You look up at him, surprised, and somewhat upset by this pronouncement.

>"But... you are the Saint! The leader of this army, blessed by God! Surely there must be something you can do!"
>"Why can't you mete out judgement if YOU see it as wrong, then?"
>"I understand. Unfortunately, that means more actions like this will be taken against the locals. I don't want the people of this place to hate us."

I don't know, I sort of want to get to the big events this is all building up to. I MIGHT run FDQ between then and now, but it's far more likely for more Crusaders until then.

"Saint please, we are out here without support and now our own medics have separated themselves from us. I can understand not calling them out in front of the army or making the punishments public but I think we should at least talk to the Templars, lest we risk losing more of our army and losing any hope of local support we have been trying to drum up."

You look down at your feet, and grit your teeth, breathing heavily. Calming yourself down, you look back up, and nod, staring Herard in the eye, not an easy task.

"I understand. Unfortunately, that means more actions like this will be taken against the locals. I don't want the people of this place to hate us."

The Saint looks grateful, well, at least, what you think that expression would be on another man's face.

"Tank ye, ah'm glad."

You frown again, and continue.

"Saint please, we are out here without support and now our own Hospitallers have separated themselves from us."

Moving over to the map, you look at the forest that you explored with your warband, where you outran the Wilde Jaege, and see the little dot that represents the village. The men there have no possible way of knowing what's going on. But you suppose it's for the best. You would rather not know about this, and the situation would be even better if it wasn't happening at all.

"I can understand not berating them in front of the army, or making the punishments public, but I think we should at least talk to the Templars, lest we risk losing more of our army and losing any hope of local support we have been trying to gather."

Herard lets out a growl.

"An' wat would y' ave me do, eh? If'n ah do ta't, th'men'll talk. 'Ah 'ave ta be representin' th' Pope. An' wat 't Pope says it ain't wrong."

He gestures broadly, all around you.

"Ah know y'think Ah'm th' nxt bes' ting. Men do too." He holds up a swarthy, thick finger. "Bu' 'is nawt it. Ah'm t' leadr. But only ifn' Ah act like th'Pope."

The Norwegian gets up starts pacing.

"Can' deal wit charg's of her'sy. A leas', nawt now."

Shaking his head, he walks closer, and pats your shoulder with his massive hand.

"Don' worry. Stategy meei'n on th' morrow." Gesturing to the tentflap, he shoos you out. "I've come up wi' somethin. Yew migh' like it."

Hesitant, you bow, and leave, leaving the large Saint behind, walking into the quickly-cooling evening of the camp.

Wrapped up in your thoughts, you pay no heed as to where you are heading, drifting through the tents and masses of men aimlessly, until you find yourself:

... On the edge of the camp, looking out to the south, and the sweeping vista of endless grass therein. The sun had just set, sinking below the horizon like a floundering ship, leaving the stats behind.

Silently walking a ways out of earshot of the tents, you sit down, pressing the tall-ish grass down around you. Sitting cross-legged, you simply stare out into the night sky, exploring this new, alien starscape above you.

There are many constellations that you don't recognize, or rather, groups of stars that look like they'd fit the part of a constellation. Out here, away from the constant murmur of the camp, and the constant distraction from it.

Sighing, your thoughts begin to wander. Back to Germany. Back to the Church. Back to your fallen Brothers. You don't know how to quite make sense of all this.

Wasn't for flashback. It was for the LORD to guide you.

>>1472699

As you stare up into the sky, inner thoughts in turmoil, you don't even notice the man sit next to you. Or maybe he didn't even sit, he just appeared. Either way, you didn't notice his arrival.

"Hey." The single word is soft, and in German.

Looking to the right, you see... the Archangel Gabriel?

For some reason, this doesn't strike you as odd whatsoever, and you find it almost fitting that he'd appear right now, in this lonely, introspective moment. He helped you in your time of turmoil already, why not again?

"Hello, Gabriel."

Not even turning to acknowledge him, you simply ask, "So what is it this time?"

You hear a pause, and the Archangel looks at the vaulted sky beside you.

"Pretty neat, huh?"

Taking a moment to form a response, you simply nod, and admit that yeah, it is pretty neat.

"As much as I fly about the universe, I sometimes forget what it's like to see it from places like here."

Smiling brilliantly, teeth reflecting the moonlight, Gabriel chuckles.

"HE really did a good job, didn't he? With making all.. this."

"Yes. Of course. He IS God."

Patting your shoulder, he nods sympathetically.

"Rough day, huh? Always gets rough with this sort of issue."

>(Just nod.)

You can trust him. He's an angel, of course you can.

"How could they do that?!?! Did they not read the same Holy Book, take the same oaths?" You begin to rant at Gabriel in an almost-shout, soft enough to not draw attention from the camp.

"Did we not learn the same message of bringing the LORD'S word to the heathen of the world? Are we to not protect the innocent and punish the wicked? Did not Jesus say: 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?'"

Clenching your fist, and punching the ground, you grind your hand into the dirt.

"If they're supposed to be 'Little Christs', then WHY ARE THEY SLAUGHTERING SLAVES?"

Grabbing a chunk of dirt, you throw it into the distance, and hold your head in your hands.

"NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE!"

Putting an arm around you, Gabriel gives you a side hug, and his smile dims.

"Yeah, this seems the right time for an existential crisis. Listen, it's... complicated. You know this, but... every man has his own reason. Some believe that what they did was the Boss' work, even though it isn't. Some are just bloodthirsty. Some just followed the pack."

Taking a deep breath, you look down at the ground and grit your teeth.

>"Then why isn't St. Herard DOING something? Isn't he ordained by GOD?"
>"How could they have... TWISTED the WORD like this?"
>(Growl incomprehensibly.)
