In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

Perhaps we could wrap up the space battle now since it's not pressing/active.

Firstly, the six iconoclasts that escaped. I assume they went straight back to The Grave, but if not, can we give pursuit?

As for the hulked light cruiser, I suggest an extensive augur sweep of the vessel, see if we can establish if there's any unusual and potentially advanced components we might be able to salvage, and also what chaos god - if any - the ship was aligned to (Trianon should be good at that). Also establish the remaining enemy presence through scans (I calculated ~30% crew dead and ~50% crew incapacitated assuming standard crew. But chaos marines are harder).

Also scan the moon they were trying to do sorcerous stuff on.

Also can I purchase three more Land Speeder Storms to replace the ones lost in Operation Glass Eye?

I believe we're also expecting a response from the Raven Guard in return for sending them great-crusade era RG power armour and geneseed.

Empress a best.

>Fleeing vessels
Please give me 6d100 rolls, every one of them under 85 will indicate a ship that successfully managed to set course for the grave. However if any vessels were forced to take alternative routes, you can try to give pursuit.

>Hulked cruiser scans
Please roll d100 for the scanners and another d100 for Trianon's Perception. Generate it with 25+2d10. Alternatively he can try to bruteforce it with psychic might, using his willpower to scour the Immaterium, but he will open up to fatigue and possible warp anomalies(that would require a separate roll).

>The moon
The moon is too big for Trianon to cover on his own, but you can roll another d100 for the augur scanners. However if you wish to use Trianon for additional psychic scan, he could do it over the period of a few days or up to a week.

Please bear in mind that any scanning assumes that you are abandoning pursuit of any stragglers.

>Land speeder storms
You can order them at the Tombstone armoury, if I recall correctly you have the necessary patterns.

It seems that one of the Iconoclasts was blown off course due to the disturbance in the warp and your Navigator reports that they went in a direction away from the grave, giving a possibility to pursue them.

If you wish any of your ships to pursue lone Iconoclast, please roll their Leadership(-10) to catch up with Iconoclast. Aspera Dominus is too slow to participate in the pursuit.

After extensive scans downed Chaos light cruiser is revealed to be a former Imperial ship that about eight centuries ago went by the name of "Saphire Blade" and served in the Imperial Navy on the outskirts of Gothic Sector.

While your records are missing a lot of information, it seems that the ship was listed as destroyed in one of numerous battles that shook the Sector in those days. Most likely servants of the Ruinous Powers retrieved the hulk and restored it - under their yoke it went by the name of "Fierce Mauler".

+Analysis+
Subject: "Fierce Mauler"
Status: Downed
+++
Hull integrity: 76%
Atmospheric integrity: 18%
Crew survivors: 800 - 1100 (rapidly dwindling)
Presence of Traitor Marines: Confirmed
Number of Traitor Marines: not more than 20
Chaos God affiliation: Unclear
+++
Hotspots of enemy activity:
1. One of the lance batteries, still active, but easy to evade
2. Living quarters blocks 45, 46 and 49 on the eastern side of the ship
3. One of the hangars near the tail, close to reactors
4. Bridge of the ship
[these areas are not connected with each other as far as we are aware]

Orders? Destruction of areas still held by the enemy is possible, but very likely to destroy the hulk beyond repair. (50% complete destruction, 35% partial destruction, 15% surgical destruction)
>>
>>1443017
I say atomise the ship. I'd consider trying to salvage it if it were great-crusade era, but if it was only lost 800 years ago then it's not worth it.

Unfortunately your scans don't provide any conclusive results. The unnerving appearance of artificially terraformed moon seems to put your men and even battle brothers on edge. Some scans indicate that there seem to be lingering exhaust engine trails in the upper layers of the thin atmosphere - this indicates that someone landed or at least approach the moon on some sort of spacecraft. However due to the shape of the moon and numerous caverns, craters and canyons, it is impossible to say whether visitors are still on the moon or whether they returned to the ship prior to the battle.

Trianon claims that he's not detecting any abnormal disturbance in the warp currently, but the whole system of Sictix reeks of death and pain in the Immaterium, so any foul play might be hidden by that. Upon your orders a soulword is sent out to the Inquisition, hopefully they will soon send someone here or will reply to you, but it could take weeks or in worst case scenario - months. Will you wait here in the system?

The thunderhawk touched down in one of the areas inside the left "eyesocket" crater of the dead moon, where your scans indicated that Traitors might have landed while their ship was orbiting Sictix.

After a couple of hours of scouring the area one of the Sergeants, Asteron, reports:
>Sir, area is clear now, but we have found in the sand imprints of at least a few landers and a trail leading towards one of the canyons. We suspect that the Traitors have landed here, but they must have evacuated once the space battle started. We will follow the trail for now in a loose formation and see what they were up to.
Brethorius agrees with the situation assessment and your scouts move forward. Two scouts stay at the entrance of the tunnel, four others go to scout the canyons from the top, however not much is visible because of the curved walls and dust winds blowing dozens of miles an hour. Meanwhile the rest enter the maze-like network of canyons. Unfortunately comms are down due to the interference - either the canyons, sandstorm or the something else seems to be playing tricks. Brethorius picks up communications signal from the surface:
>Sir, this is brother scout Rhodios, it seems our brothers are having some trouble in there - we heard boltgun fire, but we can't reach them over the vox. Are we cleared to enter the canyon to find our brothers? I am afraid we will not be able to contact you until we get back.

Rhodios decides to follow the approach that favoured your progenitors for millenia - silent approach when in doubt. In sergeant's absence he takes initiative and leads his brothers into the narrow canyon. Mere hundred yards in they find Kolyon, or rather his upper half, as his legs are missing. He is still breathing, but in shock, his Space Marine physique is keeping him barely alive. Rhodios orders one of his brothers to quickly get Kolyon out of the canyon and proceeds with two others deeper into the dusty corridor. It seems that Kolyon wasn't alone. He was caught trying to retreat from the canyon, but he wasn't alone. Down the road you find another three brothers dismembered, their armour torn into pieces, geneseed scattered all over the floor. Further down you find brother Shigran standing upright by the side of the wall, his bolter's clip is empty, but you know that he's dead as his crushed helmet, with his head still inside, is good twenty yards away. Rhodios feels his twin hearts start beating faster, but pushes onwards. In the next clearing he finds the place where the scouts were orginally ambushed - seven bodies are sprawled around the clearing, bolt holes mark the walls, blood colours the grey sand. In the middle of the carnage Rhodios sees a strange pile of slowly dissolving, slightly glowing matter. He's only seen it captured on some training tapes, never encountered anything like that personally.
>Is that... Warp matter..?
He approaches it, but at a careful distance. Dissolving pile seems to resemble a weird contorted, now almost melted body of a horned beast-thing.
>Daemons... Emperor bless your souls, brothers... We need to retreat!
Then he hears fire from further down the canyon.
>Damn it, let's check it out.
Rhodios and his two brothers quickly, but silently proceed down the darkened canyon. At the end of it they find something they didn't expect. On top of a weird looking raised round platform, or maybe altar, stands Sergeant Asteron, his right hand missing, monoknife in his left hand and brother Verrun, with a shotgun blasting at a daemon who is circling the platform like a vulture. There's another one further down. It takes Rhodios a few seconds, but he remembers the name - Bloodletters! His brother scouts are pale with fear - they've never faced such an enemy, but they have the advantage of surprise. What will Rhodios order?

Brethorius is furious. This was supposed to be easy, this was supposed to be quick, this was supposed to make those scouts better marines. All it made them was dead. But he wasn't going to let his mourning get into the way of his revenge.
>If not for Chapter Master's orders to figure out what's been happening there, I'd level the whole place with a lance strike... Let's move out. I am coming down, orders or not.
Brethorius takes with him Gavin the Untaken and three squads of his battle brothers. Trianon is following him as well, his face is calm, but his eyes are steel.
>Be careful, Brethorius, don't let this cloud your judgement. We don't know what we are in for. I told our brothers to get the flamers, Bloodletters will feel the purifying embrace of our holy promethium.
Within half an hours two Thunderhawks land at the entrance of the canyon. Gavin the Untaken grumbles, his gears whirr and clink as he disembarks from the transport.
>TAKE ME TO THE ENEMY. I WILL CRUSH THEM.
Techmarine Destros pats the venerable Dreadnought on the shoulder plate and points him towards the canyon entrance.
>Purge them, brother. Your service continues.
Gavin stomps the ground.
>FOR THE EMPEROR! NO GRAVE SHALL TAKE US!
He strides onwards, Brethorius and battle brothers behind him. Gavin only picks up speed, he doesn't slow down in the canyon, his armoured form punches through rock formations, widening the path for those following him, but he is still careful enough not to destabilise the canyon walls. Within minutes, your party reaches the altar and your enemies. Bloodletters are there, but now there are three of them. Through camera on Gavin's shoulder you can see that Sergeant Asteron and brother Verrun are dead - they tried to make a run for it and were cut down by the filthy warp spawn.
>DIE.
Gavin's assault cannon opens up, ripping chunks of stone out of the walls as tracer fire finally connects with one of the Bloodletters, cutting his form in half. The other one jumps onto Gavin, but he catches it mid-air with him power claw. Dreadnought stands still for a moment as if savouring the moment or maybe as if to tease the daemon, it shrieks. Then he gives it a reason to scream as he tears it crushes it. The last Bloodletter takes swing at Gavin with his warp-blade, leaving a nasty scar on his frontal plate, but even warp-blade is no match for Dreadnought's superior armour. Gavin turns to him, but daemon evades. While Dreadnought might be slow, promethium certainly isn't. Brethorius steps forward together with his brothers and they burn the last daemon to cinder.

It appears that this is a recently constructed altar site. Trianon suggests that he could spend a couple of days to examine that altar for a detailed analysis, but this seems like a localised warp-disturbance generator which weakens reality and draws from the despair surrounding Sictix. Current working theory is that Traitors stopped here and constructed this temporary portal to catch some daemons and enslave them for their service or possibly to draw power from them. What do you want to do?
>Destroy the portal! It might spawn more daemons.
>Guard it until the Inquisition arrives. We must think about the bigger picture.
>Let Trianon study it. We must learn more about the enemy (Chance to get skill increase/trait).

Rhodios can't live with himself after the battle. He knows that he could have taken the shot, there were only two Bloodletters, he and his brothers could have taken them, Asteron and Verrun would still be alive then. Somehow word reaches the rest of the brothers of his actions in the canyon. Nobody says it to his face, but he knows how they call him behind his back. Rhodios the Coward. The one who left his brothers to die. He tries to sign up with the Deathwishers, but he is politely turned down. Even those who are ready to die don't want him among them. He sits alone in the mess hall, silently eating his rations and thinking about his failure.

There was one more that was killed by the scouts during the ambush, don't forget. Rhodios found his remains.

Do they actually call him Rhodius the Coward or is he just imagining things?

Would you mind rolling for his trait - d4?
1. Tormented
2. Obsessed
3. Death Wish
4. Pick two others

He also gets Outcast trait. This one is defined depending on situation.

Please decide on what you do with the altar and we will finish the session for today.

>>Let Trianon study it. We must learn more about the enemy (Chance to get skill increase/trait).
We need to know what happened. Not merely destroy something that can give us a clue what was going on here. Ofc stay on guard at all time. PLus its good give the inquisition whose favor we try to get in regards to the Ursus situation something.

Give all scouts a lecture on the difficulties of trying to achieve the assigned mission, even if it means to leave others to fight. Sometimes it is more important for a recon force to report what is happening. It always is a tough choice, especially when it means abbandoning a brother, but the need to bring information to others is vital in the bigger picture.

Tormented and obsessed.
Let him earn his vindication.
>>
>>1468786
Once Rhodios becomes a full marine make him a Shadow. He is an outcast that no one wants anyways. He's obsessed, looking for redemption and good at stealth. Being a bodyguard gives him opportunities for redemption and an honorable death. And we have open spots
>>
>>1468786
If what Rhodios says is true about what the other marines say about him, that is absolutely unacceptable.

He was following orders like a good marine should. Like certain marines (cough brethorius cough deathwishers) have not in the past. If he hadn't reported the daemons, engaged the enemy, and lost, we'd be sending more marines in their unprepared, and more brothers would die.
>>
>>1468859
So mark him for promotion later down the line, but for the immediate future we should maybe not include him in conventional marine units, for morale reasons. Let him finish his training and then send him on a special assignment.

>lecturing the scouts
You get the impression, that your brothers understand what's happened and the reasons for it. However still the impression persists that Rhodios could have killed or at least distracted the bloodletters, he had the surprise on his side. Two clear shots would have killed two enemies and saved the lives of two brothers. Please roll your Persuasion (d100), this is a Hard(-20) test.

+Post combat report+
=Gene-seed retrieved: 0
Klementhos sounds resentful
>Most of the scouts were not mature enough for the harvest and the rest I suspect of being contaminated by the warp blades. I advise leaving burying them as they are.

=Armour retrieved: 4+d6
While scout carapace is a lot easier to fix than power armour, it is also easier to destroy, especially in close combat. However there are enough parts left over to assemble a few suits.

=Sgt. Kolyon
Klementhos is even more worried about his patient:
>His condition is critical, half of his abdomen is gone. He is showing surprising vitality as it is, but I don't think he will hold out for long. What would you want me to do?
1. Administer Emperor's Mercy
2. Provide him with care, let him fight for as long as he can, maybe he will live
3. Assemble all the available Apothecaries and perform immediate surgery, save this man at any cost
4. Inter him in the Dreadnought Sarcophagus. This might be considered to be unorthodox as he is not a known hero in your Chapter, but your Chapter doesn't have defined attitude to Dreadnoughts yet, maybe you don't treat them the way most other Chapters do.
Roll d100 for whatever you decide to do.

One of the servitors at the back of the room starts chirping with her mandibles and then shrieks for a second before starting to speak in a monotone, but understandable voice:
>Master, signal intercepted. Ship entering the system, Escort, Firestorm Class, modified. Decoding and confirmation successful. Signal recognised as Inquisitorial identification. Inquisitor Lord Tomas Garant requests your audience.

>Greetings, Astarte. It was the right the decision to summon Inquisition. While Traitors are not my area of expertise, I was the closest one to answer your call. Your decision to destroy the portal was not the best, as it could have been dangerous or we might have lost valuable clues as to what were the motives of our enemies, but not the worst one either, having in mind what could happen while I was travelling here. So overall I can commend you on a job well done, please accept my condolences for your losses, they were a necessary price. My team will inspect the site of the portal. I also would like to request one final things from you - I would appreciate the aid of your cannons to destroy the hulk. Meanwhile, would you happen to have a moment in private..? How about you give me a tour of your lance batteries?
Once you are far away from eyes and ears of your brothers and chapter serfs, Garant switches the topic to something a bit more unexpected:
>I will be frank with you. I happen to be consorting with xenos known as the Eldar. Why would an Inquisitor admit an act of what most of Imperium perceives as heresy to a Space Marine? Because I am almost guaranteed that you are doing the same. While it still eludes me to what extent exactly, but I know for sure that your name and the name of your Chapter has been often discussed on the Craftworld that haunts our stars. I might have a favour to ask of you... It concerns our common acquaintance - I think you knew him as Faceless?
>>
>>1476544
"If that is your wish Lord Inquisitor, the hulk will be nought but atoms within the day."

Activate sneaky whispering voice:
"Faceless? He's MIA as far as I know Lord Inquisitor."
