PURPS

Your legs are crossed, eyes closed and the sars are dancing pinpricks across the black void of a sky. Wind gentle caresses your cheek and sends your hair swaying slightly, the breeze refreshing and invigorating after hours of sitting in a meditative position.

Patience. A rare indulgence for you lately.

But the sequence of traps, tripwires, pitfalls, snares, wards and charms surrounding the campsite is enough motivation to make you sit still and focus. Your defences are like a set of dominos places on their sides, on the edge of a staircase, that dangles off a cliff, on a stormy day.

They're a spring, gently bouncing down a temple steps, they're ready and so are you.

So when one of your saw's wires - stretches across the forrest floor in a nigh invisible net of criss crossed, overlapping and far reaching alarm cum murder trap - pings slightly. Your anticipation is palpable.

Something just stepped against the tripwire, so slight that you think it was someone or something sentient testing out the limits of your defences.

Time to answer the questions they're asking.

"Showtime." You deadpan as you hit recall on both your saws.

With a quick pressure on your palm your saws, rev out in the night - spitting dirt into the air from their concealed position as your weapons are recalled at top speed. Both of the shining discs of death tear along their path as the wires pull them along the route you laid out.

Each slices through a tree as it spins around the trunk countless times, leaving ragged and curved wounds across the bark and lumber. So deep are the wounds that sap begins spilling out onto the grass before the trees even tumble, but soon your discs have sliced the air and begun rotating around the next tree and the next and the next.

It’s in less than eight seconds that between both discs have cleaved through and around the perimeter of the camp three feet from the ground and returned to you with enough speed to send the wind billowing outwards upon your catching. The discs stay put in your palm, slowly revving and humming in each hand as you roll your neck.

A series of pops and clicks signify your body reaching readiness.

You look into what used to be the treeline, now a ring of felled trees that form a wall as tall as a man. A nice living wall you have established with your wanton destruction, the Sirens all scream from their quarters and you make sure to turn the lock on their carriage as you pass it.

Your crimson eyes continue scanning the now secure campsite, safe inside your little arena.

Or is that cage.

A form, humanoid in appearance but bearing canine features.

Even as you note the ears and tail, you take in that it is face down in a pool of blood. Looks like your traps were incredibly effective.

Walking closer to the pile of bloodied fur, you see no movement, no sign of life except for the life fluids slowly spreading across and draining into the dirt. Approaching with all sense strained, the night is silent save for your heartbeat as you approach.

Slipping a foot through the pile of blood, the cold yet thick liquid runs into your shoes and through your toes as you work your way under the body and flip it in the air. A cloak, weighed down with brambles and thorns - floats up into the air from your flick, a decoy that leaves you momentarily dumbfounded.

The air behind you displaces quickly and you hop forward just as a claw rakes down your back in fire. The sudden pain and surprise forces you to grit your teeth and whirl in the air, but you can only make out a thin trail of white smoke moving to your right.

Both saws are launched down into the ground overhead and slam into the ground either side of the smoke; the two hungry saws kicking up a fountain of dirt into the night sky. The corner of your eye picks up movement and green hair; meaning Verde has tracked you down. But once the dirt geyser clears, you find yourself looking at something wholly unexpected.

The person or monster has three wings emerging from her back; one grey, one black and one white. Her face is covered in a white wolf mask, complete with ears - seemingly made of cracked and tested bone from which shine two yellow lights that catch the light in the same way a wolf’s eyes do. In fact, were it not for these monstrous features and the fact the little bits of hair and fur you can see are snow white; you’d suspect Mono of playing dress up.
The thing growls, feral in stance even as it draws a distinctly artificial katana from a long red sheathe. Her limited clothing resembling that of martial arts practitioners; a strange symbol of calm, tranquil discipline that sharply throws her animalistic behaviour and appearance into contrast.

Verde looks unimpressed but cautious, refusing to take her eyes off the intruder.

You can’t help but notice the weeping ragged wound that is rapidly healing across her waist; surely you should have cut her in half?
The durability needed to take such an attack?
The speed needed to dodge it?
The cunning to negate it?
The regeneration to recover from it?

No method of survivability is good news for you.

She exhales that strange white mist as she falls into a defensive stance.

Your saws smooth out and then grow spikes, which rotate on unseen belts as mechanism and engines internally chug into life. Waking up from inactivity even as both saws slide into one interlocked kite shield that covers your whole body. With a jerk you pull the shield in two, each half covering and arm completely, granting you a nigh impenetrable protection that you can easily adjust.

Verde steps up and is ready to call out, but is answered by a lance of white superheated steam surging toward her. It is an attack that singes your eyebrows before it gets within twenty feet; but you were anticipating something like this from this deceptive wolf thing. You have to push yourself to get in front of it; but even as a luminescent white line of vapour collides with your shield, you’re their to block the blow and allow Verde to act.

Your hands are reddened from sheer temperature behind the shield as blocking drives you back a step; just from the sheer force of the semi-massless attack.

“That’s not normal steam.” You warn Verde as she rushes past you to counterattack, wishing you could inject some urgency into your voice.

MIRANDA

“Not surprised!” you respond as you take the opening provided to you by Purps’ sudden shielding. You allow yourself a brief moment of wondering what else she can do as you charge forward, hands alight with energy- only for the strange winged wolf to immediately leap back and, to your mild surprise, dissipate and start in the other direction, fleeing as a strange, wispy cloud.

The two of you are already in pursuit by the time it reforms. “I’m going up top,” Purps announces, alighting to the treetops with a quick run and a leap, sticking to the branches like a spider.

That leaves you to track groundside, then. It’s fast, Purps is fast, and you’re not exactly a slowpoke yourself.

...Geez, though. This won't be the easiest tracking job you've had, though. There's barely even a scent…

(It was largely ‘keep pace’ for a long time, gonna make an exec decision this once.)

As you dart through the trees, you can see that the image of the strange creature seems to have coalesced slightly- there’s an ephemeral look to the flashes of color that you see, making it come across as though you’re...well, no it IS a phantom, so it looking ghostly would make sense, wouldn’t it? It suddenly vanishes ahead as it drops down a small incline as you and it dart through the underbrush, it slowly gaining a lead on you.

“Angle to your left.” you hear the voice of Purps call out as you quickly tilt in that direction. You can barely see a flash of white that indicates it as you put on another burst of speed. It’s kind of annoying- the forest canopy here is thick and vivid- you could try to leap after it- that’d help you keep pace for sure, but it could likely shift directions faster than you could land. Might be worth trying to take a page from Purps’ book and use the trees somehow, too...that or considering how agile the girl is, she might be able to do something about this herself.

“Half a turn to your right.” Dangit- you didn’t even see her turn. You quickly pivot and pursue yet again. It’s strange how this one isn’t even trying to attack, though…damnit, this might be a feint. Or it could just be scared. You’ve seen both.

>Try and pick it off with magi-blasts.
>No reason to risk calling attention to yourselves. Keep at it on foot.
>Maybe Purps can go ahead and distract it? She seems more adept at tree travel…

PURPS

“Purps! Get in front of it!” Verde commands from beneath the black bough canopy.

“On it.” You shout back, pushing your body a little further to accelerate onwards. Hopping from tree to tree, the surroundings become a dark blur of passing foliage and bark as you relax yourself and flow around the environment like water.

The white spark below now draws even with you, as both of you hit the same pace. Her shortcuts consist of dissolving through trees and burning through thick bushes with that unusual superhot steam lance. Your shortcuts consist of bouncing off and running off every available surface regardless of orientation; to the point that if any gravity had claim over you in the first place - it’d be like you were running through a nice flat road instead of the thick woods.

But your opportunity comes, your quarry becoming corporeal in order to cross a slight stream. Maybe she can’t cross running water?

Regardless, you hang upside down from a branch ahead of her just long enough to arrest your momentum; sending a gust of wind from your sudden deceleration careening through the canopy. The wolf girl looks where the shockwave is, her eyes not even registering you as her gaze goes by.

Tensing your legs, you pounce down to the ground at the same time as you send your saw towards her.

Boss Fight: STALKER

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL7Hhn5vEuM

She sees the saw at the last minute, the disc shredding the grass and dirt she was standing a moment before. Your foe moves to exploit the opening; her shining sword pointed towards you as steam gathers around the tip, as furious as a miniature storm.

It is released at the same time you hit recall on your saw; your weapon being embedded deep enough in the ground that you are launched towards it instead of vice versa. Propelling yourself through the air in this way always catches your opponents by surprise, and this time is no different, as the wolf girl’s attempt at adjusting her aim allows you to twist your body around the steam in mid air.

Your shoulder connects with her chest, the impact dislodging your saw violently. This allows it to trail you in your trajectory, and the force of your acrobatic charge carries you both several feet. You roll to your feet when you both go crashing through the underbrush, and being first to rise you don’t let up, using the momentum from your roll to gain a little extra speed.

“MINERVA’S LANTERN!” You roar, engulfing yourself and the clearing in blinding violet flame. Your foe manages to make it to her feet and brings her sword to a defensive posture before you flurry of blows; you hold the wire close to the blade and make a figure of eight to test her reactions, seven deadly strikes that range from low to high diagonal to horizontal.

She is level to the task, but her arms shake with every parry - seemingly built for speed and decisive strikes rather than a stand up brawl.

Which gives you the edge.

Purps is rolling at +1 for lantern

MIRANDA

Hot damn, that girl moves fast. You hate to admit it, but you’re impressed. When she actually tries, it’s hard to follow her visually. But, that’s just so much the better for your purposes. She can, at the very least, hold up the thing with that kind of speed, and possibly let you get in place for a good ambush if need be.

The next few moments are a deathly silence save for your own movements; part of you wonders just what’s happened-

And then you see a wreath of purple flames flare up in the distance- even through the treeline as it is, it’s bright and fairly obvious, as a large purple spot on the horizon.

Yeaaaah, that’s probably her.

As you approach, you can hear the sounds of battle, and soon you can hear a wicked, echoing howl come from the same area- sounds like things are getting vicious. Sure enough, you can see the clearing that the two are likely fighting in, surrounded by violet flames- a crack sounds nearby, and suddenly a figure crashes through the ring of fire, impacting on a tree that makes a similar sound as the impact is heavy enough to cause splinters to form, the large tree slowly snapping from its trunk as it topples over with a resounding crash.

To its credit, the impact seems to have jarred it, but not taken it out entirely- it has enough presence of mind to dodge the charge, lit fury that is Purps’ pursuit, and it just barely dodges a followup swing with a desperate duck, leaping clear and returning to a standing position opposite it's known enemy, blade at the ready.

Unfortunately, it’s taken notice of your reappearance as well, and is smart enough to hold its defensive posture between the both of you despite being at a near ninety degree angle from each other relative to it. It’s not exactly a pincer, but it’ll have to do.

The way Purps looks right now, polearm at an easy ready stance, makes her look like this is all too regular for her. You guess you can relate. “Hm. You got started on it quick.”

“I did.” Her equally deadpan response actually seems to do something to the beast, causing it to growl. She seems to take little notice. “Let’s try to end it quick, too.”

“Fine with me.” It’s clearly on the defensive now, and you doubt it’s lost much speed- whatever you do will have to either be tricky enough to catch it off guard or be too fast to avoid even for it.

PURPS

The thing is looking quite displeased at this situation, and you hope to only compound it’s ill fortune. With Verde here, you honestly feel that this is in the bag, but still a cornered mihal is a deadly mihal.

Resting your polesaw on your neck and slinging your arms over it in a casual gesture, you hope the thing will take its eyes off you to assess Verde more; it is leaving you a tad exposed but if you show you’re not much of a threat -

The purple light cast off by your lantern catches the girl’s eyes as they ever so slightly shift to her side. In an instant your pole saw is halfway to forming the chain gauntlets you need, taking advantage of that half second of indecision. Verde’s hands begin to glow and the creature’s head turns a fraction, taking its attention further away from you as your arms vibrate with the sensation of a million gnashing teeth sprinting and revving along them.

The Stalker’s sword begins to move up whilst the strange magic Verde wields builds up in the air, intensifying the light on her hands to a pair of emerald beacons. You yank backwards in the air the moment you sense the metal on the enemy; but instead of the whole sword flying towards you, only the handle and scabbard are affected by your power.

The surprise barely has time to register for you when the ceramic sword comes to stop in the scorched earth surrounding you. The Wolf Girl doesn’t have time to react to her disarmament more than a pair of wide eyes before Verde begins blasting away.

MIRANDA
The first blast sends it spinning, but doesn’t knock it over- the second one does that, but that’s all you get before it seems to realize its position and immediately leaps away with a yipping cry. You’re no rookie at this, though- the trick is to fire where it WILL be, not where it IS. It’s a hard ask, though- the thing’s fast, and where it will be isn’t exactly set in stone with how quickly it can adjust its trajectory. If nothing else, you know full well it’s gunning for the river- twice now you’ve just barely managed to cut it off from leaping across as you continue to lay down fire.

Which, you suppose is why it quickly gets frustrated and starts darting towards you- and you’re forced into a quick retreat, leaping away as it closes in, weaving through your blasts- damn mutt! Seems like it’s taken to the idea that the best defense is a good offense now- and you’re on the chopping block. It doesn’t manage to touch you- you’re no hypersonic traveler, but you learn how to dodge real quick in this business- but being under fire like this is never pleasant, especially with how damned FAST this thing- okay that swing was far too close. Nearly nicked your nose.

You need to do something to get this back under control, and as you see Purps moving, several possibilities flash through your head in nanoseconds.

PURPS

Verde seems to stop in a moment, and you can see a brief crackle of electricity as the beast closes in on her; there’s a dangerous, yet mischievous look in her eye as the creature bears down on her, its violent eyes not noticing what she did.

A wicked claw slashes forth without warning, and Verde puts up an armored gauntlet to protect her- the second it impacts, there’s a yowl of pain as what you guess is electricity shoots up the creature’s body. Verde takes advantage of the situation, grabbing it close, increasing the amount of electricity as it writhes and desperately tries to pull away from the sudden source of voltage.

The clearing lights up with light yet again as the electricity arcs through the thing’s body, you dash to your colleague’s side as the monster begins to smoke slightly from the magic coursing through it, jittering wildly when Verde lets it fall from her grasp.

The first punch comes from your right, and it is a swift hammerblow to her stomach, enough so to force the slight frame of the wolf girl off the ground when it lands. You follow up with a left uppercut that only launches it further, the moon shining behind her in the night sky throwing the smoking battered form into sharp silhouette.

You tense and leap, surpassing the foe’s height as you bring both gauntlets above you head, clasping hands as if in prayer; your target rapidly accelerating up towards you as your gauntlets rev and cry out for the crunch of bone beneath them.

You supply it.

Slamming both arms down in a double axe handle that could split silos in two, the trees are blown away from the impact and the fires are extinguished from the blowback, the mask cracks from the blow as she is sent straight back down to the ground like a falling star. Upon impact dust blankets the area, as if someone had demolished a building; as you slowly fall into the dust cloud, you can’t see an inch from your face.

And even that is only that due to your lantern. You don’t think it’s getting back up though.

“Take that, Bitch!” Purps boasts between coughs, “Don’t fuck with Me. Or the Sirens. Or Verde.” More coughing. “Because this is what happens, bitch.” Could use some work in the smack talk department, but sure. She can let that mouth run all she wants- you’re still aiming at the impact area. Heck, you’re tempted to fire a couple in there just to be sure.

Sure enough, the dust swirls, and you almost let loose- before you hear some more coughing. Right, yeah. “Don’t relax just yet. We don’t know if she’s down for good.”

She climbs out of the dust cloud without her purple fire aura, and you can see a spark in her eyes that wasn’t there before. “Well, she won’t do it again, because she’s dead. Because we beat her down so hard, she left a fucking crater.” Oh hey she’s actually emoting with her face, guess she has smugness and pride down pat.

“Craters don’t mean much where I’m from.” you note idly. “Been the direct cause of a couple myself.”

“Well, you’ve never seen one made by ME, so there. Have a look if you’re so worried.” She motions to the area with not a little sarcasm, and you resist the urge to roll your eyes. Not the biggest fan of All-New Cocky Purps, really. Still, you decide to take her up on her generous offer. Approaching slowly, hands still lit with mana, you edge closer as the dust finally starts to dissipate.

Suddenly a white mist erupts from the area- you fire on near instinct, but that’s not enough as your shots practically pass through the amorphous gas now barreling in the direction it was going, down the riverside. “DAMNIT!” A few trailing shots hit nothing as it’s gone less than a handful of seconds.

...It got away.

“...grrrRAAAAH!” For a brief, horrid second, you lose yourself in frustration and have to fight off a very real urge to just blow up half the forest. But that’s quickly stamped down with a deep breath and your consideration of the situation. You chased it off FAR, if nothing else, it knows it can’t play spy anymore all that well…

...Damnit, you need to get back to the caravan. You’re not going to sleep tonight, you just KNOW it.

“Just want to say. I think we did kill it.” Purps says, one hand on a sword and the other on her hip. “Because this looks painfully familiar.” She tosses it hilt first to you.

It’s an easy catch, and you have to admit it DOES look familiar...it’s similar, if not exactly the same type of make the blade that damn zombie-creating phantom had. That...was kinda odd. “Huh...so what, some sort of delayed reaction, you think? Like, bleeding out to death?”

“Might be like something I can do with my fire. I can cauterize.... But it tends to make me pass out.” She sighs, “If this is a phantom, why aren’t we in a reality warped world? Why hasn’t the sword disintegrated?” She makes a quieter version of your frustration noise. “If I knew about magic I’d feel less stupid with all this.” She admits.

“Well, I know a couple things about it- least where I’m from.” You twist the blade around, trying to see if there’s something special about it. “Most magic doesn’t have inertia. When you stop, it stops. I got a friend that can do stuff similar to this- create weapons outta nothin’ but mana. But they’re only good for as long as she’s focusing on them. When she stops- poof.” You sigh. “But this…I dunno. Best I can think of is that it’s got some sort of natural connection to nature or...maybe someone? Not sure. Either way, we should get back. We’ve left the carriages unprotected for too long, in my book.”

“Want me to go ahead or should we stick together? Don’t want you getting lost out here.” From anyone else that would sound like teasing, but the flat almost blank look lends itself to sincerity.

You shrug- this is going to stick in your craw for a bit. “Might as well keep together. After you.” As she walks ahead and you follow, you’re sure there’s something you’re missing. The question is just what, though.

PURPS

“Let’s go over what we know on the walk back.” Verde suggests after a moment of silence whilst you light your cigarette. Murmuring your assent around this, you exhale away from your comrade and begin.

“Well first off, all of the phantoms up until now have been male. Since they all possessed the ability of a siren they were impossible.” You begin running your non smoking hand through your hair as you continue, “The other phantoms also had the ability to control sirens when using their own siren powers; something only Alice can do. However, she didn’t have any sirens around to control or chance to sing - so she could or couldn’t be an exception to this pattern.”

“So, assuming this girl phantom is still a phantom; we don’t know what she does.” Verde notes as she steps over a log bearing particularly intense burns. Stalker bitch probably misted through it.

“We do know that she seemed to be more timid. Avoiding a direct confrontation; using the terrain and seemed to be an assassin as opposed to a flashy type like previous phantoms.” When was the last time you spoke this much? “So what’s different about this one?”

“It’s at night. We’re outside. Nobody’s singing.” Verde lists off on her fingers while you take a drag, “Personally I think she’s a phantom due to this sword and the mask.”

“Agreed.” You… well agree.

“Any inklings to what the phantoms are?” Verde prompts, looking up at the stars with a frustrated sigh. While this is a fucked up gig, you get the feeling she doesn’t take setbacks as well as you do. Dying kind of gets you used to setbacks.

“Well, they didn’t break the wards, so they’re not intruders, spirits, ghosts, summoned spirirts, planar beings or monsters. They aren’t even devils - as much as them being incubus would explain their motive.” You try to keep the frustration inside before your saw splits into claws - not the time for demonstrations. “They were either in the village or were summoned by someone in there.”

“And so far our digging has showed no grudges or feuds between sirens.” Your colleague complains. No wonder she had a hard time navigating this forest down here, in the dark everything looks the same, the bushes are thick and thorned and the trees are all black monolithic pillars of natural intimidation.

“Going as cold as possible.” You say in your notoriously cold passionless voice, “Alice may want superstardom beyond what she has, being such a diva. Jaqeline has a lot of sadness in her history. Velth seems a little… off and Pina’s blood apparently is stronger than most.”

“Mono also worships a deity of Freedom, Wind and Travelling. So she’s got motive to want out, not sure she’s the religious serial killer type, though.” Verde adds to your surprise. Maybe Trisha was the second Siren to grow on her. Good.

“The closest we have to any drama is an apparent fling between one of the twins and the now late Me-Gan.” You muse, “We also haven’t discussed the fact the Phantoms all seem to have had targets.”

“How do you figure?” Verde counters.

“Well Me-Gan was assassinated stealthily once she was alone. Billie died in a dramatic fashion whilst Alice was left totally alone.” Now for the biggest stretch so far, “And I think the blue goggled one with the factory was going for Velth. The one who “creates” all the music, a factory creating sirens; plus he had those goggles that had nothing beneath the...” On second thought; “Though that could have been me just mincemeating what used to be beneath them. Fuck.”

“Interesting.” Verde mutters, but before you can go in circles she asks, “Let’s say that’s true. Who’s our Stalker after? She was nowhere near any of the girls. You said she’s been following us.”

“Well, Mono was there when I first saw her.” You shrug. “Best guess.” Light begins to creep through the canopy as the crescent moon manages to carve through the network of blackened leaves, the ancient boughs which witnessed your battle giving out to the thin branched ferns of tomorrow. “What did you find at Me-Gan’s body, anything helpful?”

“Potentially. A bit of what I found and what I didn't at the same time. It was quick, still recent when I got there, yet everything was clean. The Phantom smoked in through the wall, which I suppose should have been our hint it wasn’t just a death thing. But I came out of it with questions; ‘How did it know where she was?’, ‘How did it seem to escape notice?’, and ‘What happened to the body and the sheets?’ We still don’t have answers for those questions.”

In the short pause you interject, “Well, we could always just say ‘Magic’. But that’s not exactly helpful.”

“I'm starting to think maybe it's more helpful than we figure. That was too good a job for anyone that either was acting solo or didn't have some kind of reset spell to clear the room. .”

“The only other intel I really have is what the girls said. Velth and Alice had encounters with Phantoms or “male sirens” that didn’t end in bloodshed. Alice sang duet with him. Velth had… almost a date, sitting sharing songs and working together. Her being that comfortable with someone is almost like a lifelong companion instead of a stranger, but when she asked to feel his face… he raged and she withdrew into her shell.”

“So we’re dealing with some magical apparitions, with powers and knowledge they can’t possibly have.” Verde suggests flippantly.

You nod. “Looks that way. So we need to figure out the source because -”

“Even we can’t be everywhere at once, and we don’t know how tough these things might get.” Verde finishes as you begin to leave the forest for the open ground you made camp in. On the Siren’s carriage you spy a sniper on overwatch despite his youth, and before the door your songbird ready to kill.

You flicker with proud fire internally and externally at the sight of your pupil and lover.

“Points for loyalty.” Verde notes as she pulls out a device and points it at the sword you took from the wolf girl.

After that whirlwind of dialogue and recappery. In which I cut so much stuff to make it 3 instead of 23 posts. I must retire, for it is 2am and I'm tired as shit.

The mystery stuff is about to take more focus, so any Questions you have please post and Handler or I will clarify them. Fuck me my head hurts.

We're about 80% done with The Sirens arc, we're not quite final stretch but deifnently getting there. So we're going to be having some spaces for you guys to throw your theories in as Purps' and Miranda's conclusions and thoughts on the "case" so far.

Thanks for playing and continuing to support this crossover. I love you all, until you crit fail. Then I hate you.

Goodnight.
