You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Well, despite all the negative things you heard about Russians, there was one thing you had to respect them for and it was their extreme thoroughness when it came to taking practically anything that wasn't welded down. Once the order to prepare for evacuation was given, all of the various Russian shipgirls were already going through the whole structure top and bottom, packing up personal belongings and whatever could be salvaged from the structure itself. Less shit for the Abyssals to eat, you suppose.

You were observing things from the mess hall with Woel. The rest of your squadron had dispersed to assist with the evacuation. Haida, Johnston, and Heerman were outside to keep watch and relieve the Russian shipgirls on patrol, while San Diego was in the Engineering section taking stock of what should be taken, destroyed, or left behind.

"You sure you don't want to pack anything?" You raise an eyebrow to your clone/sister/whatevershewas.

"Pffft. I came here with practically only my Rig and the clothes on my back." Woel rolls her eyes. "And you don't get many shopping opportunities on an oil rig in the ass end of the Pacific, so I can pack light.

"Lucky you." You grin.

"Well, I mean, I suppose we can help the others out." Woel stretches out her arms in the same exact way you do. It was still kinda creepy seeing someone matching your own mannerisms to a tee. "Beats just sitting around here.

"C'mon, let's go see if San Diego needs any help." You grin.

"Oh geez, Engineering?" Woel groans. "All right, whatever you say."

"What, something wrong?"

"N-no." Woel quickly shakes her head. "It's just that our repair ship is a bit... odd."

"You got a repair ship on this rig?" You ask in surprise.

"Well duh, how else do you think we've been able to keep all these Rigs running all this time?" Woel rolls her eyes. "I mean, we don't really have the best setup... or spare parts... or manpower... but she manages to make it work."

"Spit and tape?" You chuckle.

"I wish we had tape." Woel grins.

The two of you then walk into the Engineering section, which was been turned into a sort of makeshift workshop. However, you had the feeling poor old Shen would have a heart attack if he saw the sorry state this one was in. Oil, grime, and rust coated almost every surface. Dingy work tables held currently unused Rigs in various states of disassembly and repair, with dozens of tools lying haphazardly on the tables and the ground.

And there, you see San Diego and short, dark haired shipgirl, the Russian repair ship, you presume, standing over a Rig, a concerned look on San Diego's face.

"Are you sure that's...wise?" San Diego frowns. "Pulling parts from the oil rig's generators to fix a turbine?"

"Is all right! Is a simple fix for me, Sukhbaatar!" The little repair ship boasts proudly as she bangs at the Rig with an oversized wrench.

"Oh great, I knew it." Woel sighs.

"Hey, SD, what's going on?" You ask as you walk up.

"Unfortunately, a few of the Russians don't have working Rigs, which means they can't leave under their own power." San Diego points to the partially disassembled Rigs scattered around the workshop. "Ultimately, that means they'll need to be towed or carried, but Sukhbaatar here insists she can get it them all fixed up before we leave."

"Towing too slow! This is much faster!" Sukhbaatar insists as she jams a crowbar into the Rig, causing a jet of dark oil to briefly squirt out.

"I'd rather not have one of these girls break down in the middle of this storm." San Diego frowns.

Are we going to put a Datalink Mod into Woel when we all get back?
>>
>>Let Sukhbaatar do her thing

Their engines just need to work, for most of the trip.

I suggest towing the girls with unsure engines and only using said engines if they're forced to fight.

If the abyssals see us towing the girls they'll assume they're helpless, so even having shitty engines will mess with the Abyssals.

"Eh, let her do her thing." You shrug. "She's been working with these girls all this time, right? I'm sure she knows what she's doing."

"Hate to admit it, but Sukh can make practically anything run regardless of its condition." Woel sighs.

"Hmmmm." San Diego eyes the repair ship suspiciously.

Sukhbaatar was still absorbed in her "work", tearing off an unneeded floatplane catapult while muttering something about it being "extra weight."

"I suppose we have no choice but to trust her abilities." San Diego concedes. "But we'll have to keep a close on those girls, regardless."

"Of course." You nod.

"Actually, that reminds me of another matter that I was going to bring up with Gangut." San Diego leans in closer to you. "I've noticed that Gangut and her sisters are a bit more... antiquated than most of the girls here. Not just in armament, but speed, as well."

"Yeah, I've hardly ever seen them break 20 knots on a clear day." Woel confirms.

"That might become a problem, because it will make the whole fleet vulnerable if we have to slow down to allow the battleships to keep pace."

"So what, you want us to just leave them behind?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I'm not saying that." San Diego insists. "But I think we should split our fleet. The faster and better conditioned shipgirls should move on ahead while we stay behind to provide escort to Gangut, her sisters, and the damaged shipgirls."

"Well, that does sound reasonable." Woel nods. "Gangut would probably go along with it if you bring it up to her."

The advance party should reasonably be able to handle Abyssals.

>"Yeah, I've hardly ever seen them break 20 knots on a clear day."
Why did the game classify the Gangut-class as fast battleships again?
>>
>>1431633
Gameplay reasons

>While all of Gangut's variants are considered "Fast Battleships" under branching rules, her base speed is "Slow". This means that while Gangut can be used in fleet compositions requiring Fast Battleships (such as in the Escort Fleet of a Combined Fleet), her slow speed will make her ineligible for routes requiring a 'Fast' fleet.

"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea." You nod. "Let's let them know."

So you, Woel, and San Diego head up to the main control station, which sort of acts as the oil rig's headquarters. There, you see the Gangut sisters directing their girls to remove or destroy sensitive equipment and documents. Nothing was to be left behind for either the Abyssals or their former Russian masters.

"Yo! Gangut!" You wave as you enter to catch the Russian battleship's attention.

"Hm? Yes?" Gangut turns her gaze to you, arms crossed.

"Well, I sorta got an idea." You suggest. "That we send the faster ships ahead of us to link up with our reinforcements quicker, while the, er, slower ships like you and the other girls not at 100% move on under our escort."

Gangut turns to her sisters. Petropavlovsk, Sevastapol, and Poltava all nod in agreement.

"Then it is agreed. We will split our fleet." Gangut declares. "However, the faster ships will need one of your number to guide them."

"Excellent!" Petropavlovsk laughs cheerfully. "Then it is settled!"

"The others are saying all preparations have been made." Poltava speaks up. "We can leave on your order."

"I see." Gangut closes her eyes and takes a breath, slide her gloved hand across one of the aging control consoles. "Then it's finally time to say farewell to this place."

"A toast, then!" Petropavlovsk says happily, a bottle of vodka already in her hand.

"Is... is this really a time to be drinking?" San Diego frowns.

"Is tradition!" Sevastapol insists.

"Trust me, they'll find any excuse to drink. Just let 'em." Woel rolls her eyes. "I think they fight better drunk, anyways."

"Come, come!" Petropavlovsk motions you over. "Join us in our toast!"

"Eh, might as well." Woel shrugs and walks forward.

"I'm good." San Diego declines politely.

"Sorry, I'll pass." You shake your head. You were in the midst of a mission and you needed to be clear headed.

"Your funeral." Woel shrugs as she takes a shot glass full of vodka. She and the Ganguts raise their glasses. You guess it was something that grew on her during her time here.

"To our old home." Gangut says.

"And to our new one!" Petropavlovsk adds in.

They all then down their shot glasses and throw them on the floor, the clinking of shattering glass echoing throughout the control room.

"Let us go, then." Gangut declares.

It takes a few minutes, but soon enough. all of the Russian shipgirls depart from the oil rig and muster in the rough seas underneath. Haida goes through one last headcount on her group.

"Looks like everybody is present and accounted for." She reports.

"All right, go on ahead, then." You tell her.

"I'll bring Portland the others back as soon as I can, so don't do anything stupid while I'm gone!" Haida says as she begins to set sail.

"I'll keep that in mind." You chuckle.

"Jeez, you two certainly got really chummy, huh?" Woel frowns. "Never would have figured."

"Eh, she turned out to be pretty cool." You shrug. You then turn to your own group, which consisted of your remaining squadron, the Ganguts, and a small assortment of Russian cruiser and destroyer shipgirls. And Milwaukee poor girl's Rig was in real bad shape since she didn't have matching parts.

"C-can we go already?" Milwaukee shivers as a gust of rain soaked wind blows into her. "If the Abyssals don't kill us, this storm will!"

"Yeah, yeah, we're getting to it." You nod. "Just need to take care of one more thing-"

"We're done~!" Johnston says cheerfully as she links up with you.

"Charges are set and ready to blow." Heerman confirms. "I suggest we get far away before that happens."

"Nice." You turn to the Ganguts. "All right everybody, we're heading out!"

As the combined fleet progresses, you naturally start to head up to the front to use your superior radar to clear the way. Even though Haida was ahead of you, the fact that her force was faster meant that there would be an ever increasing gap between the two of your forces that Abyssals could slip in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, Johnston and Heerman swung out to keep an eye on the flanks while San Diego took up the rear. Out of all of you, she had the second best radar set so she could spot potential pursuers.

And over the roaring waves and howling wind, you could hear the Russians singing. Some kind of folk song that you couldn't understand, but it was definitely something that was supposed to lift their spirits.

"Jeez, they sing pretty damn loud." You mutter.

"Yeah, well, at least they're not doing it over comms. Apparently it took them a couple of times to figure out not to do that." Woel chuckles as she links up with you.

"Ew." You shudder at the thought. You wonder what Anna would think of that. God you wished you were out of this fucking storm already so you could talk to her.

You take a deep breath, reminding yourself to focus. You were the lead ship in this formation, which meant it was up to you to spot incoming threats...

>FATE POINT GAINED!
>You currently have 2 points!

Your vision immediately lights up with contacts, and you could see three groups of unknowns. Two were relatively small in size. Most likely just pickets or patrol squadrons, that were obviously screening for the much larger third force. They where ranging out in a fairly wide search pattern, but close enough that you're not sure if your own force could slip through the cracks.

And that's when the demolition charges on the oil rig finally go off. There's a bright flash of orange as the entire structure detonates, the leftover oil flaring up like a candle before being quashed by the storm.

Almost immediately, one of the Abyssal scout groups veers off, no doubt to investigate the explosion, leaving a critical gap in Abyssal lines. You could exploit it by hitting the responding Abyssal force in the rear and hopefully knock it out before the main fleet realizes what's going on. Or, you could try to fight your way through and blow past the lone scout group in you way before enemy reinforcements could arrive.

Or, you could try to sneak through the gap and hope they won't notice.

You decide to ambush the scouts, which would be the best way to handle things. However, you doubt the Russian shipgirls would have the speed necessary to intercept them. That meant you had to rely on the ships in your own squadron, or Woel to help you out. However, you also had to be careful. The more ships you pulled to help with the ambush, the less ship would be left to escort the vulnerable Russian battleship girls.

"Johnston, Heerman, on me!" You bark as you veer out of formation. "Woel, you take the lead! Watch out for Abyssal scouts!"

"Got it!" Woel doesn't ask questions and stands in for you as you link up with your sisters.

"Found something?" Heerman asks as she flexes her augmented arm.

"Yep, a couple of nosy Abyssals." You grin.

"Ha, we'll nail them good!" Johnston grins as she readies her composite combat shield.

As the three of you speed forward, you pulse your radar and see that you're steadily gaining ground on the Abyssal scouts, and now that you were closer, you could get a better idea of their composition.

And it was a pretty nasty group, too. Two Ri-class light cruisers, four destroyers, and the all too familiar Destroyer Princess. Now you sort of understand why this group so aggressively changed direction.

The escorts don't even stand a chance, not with surprise on your side. Both your and Johnston's 5 inch guns open up, adding your bright orange high explosive shells to the torrential downpour. The shells strike home and hit hard, immediately melting the Abyssal destroyers away like nothing.

Meanwhile, Heerman takes aim and fires her railgun. There's a white flash as the hypersonic cannon round lances through the air, creating a trail of steam as it instantly evaporates the rain around it. And once that round slams into one of the Ri-class ships flanking the Destroyer Princess, well, it practically disappeared in a cloud of burning oilblood.

Immediately, the Destroyer Princess wheels around, red fire exploding from her eyes and Rig as she moves to engage, and makes a beeline straight for you. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem if the remaining Ri-class wasn't closing in as well, lobbing shells at you and your sisters to keep you all off balance.

Johnston readies her shield, but the Abyssals weren't dumb and split off into different directions, meaning Johnston can only defend you against a singular threat.

"Johnston, handle the Ri!" You bark through the rain.

"Got it!" Johnston is quick to respond as she interposes herself between you and the Ri-class, raising her shield like a protective umbrella. The Ri's shells start coming down, but explode or bounce harmlessly off of Johnston's protective shield.

"I'll handle that Ri." Heerman tells you. "I don't think I'll be able to draw a bead on that Princess anyways."

"Got it." You nod as you speed forward to meet the Destroyer Princess, still burning red with fury. You can also see her gun and torpedo mounts swiveling to take aim at you...

Your missiles all spiral in towards the Destroyer Princess, ignoring the winds and torrential rain as they home in. However, the Destroyer Princess appears to have been anticipating this, as she suddenly surges forward in a massive burst of speed, plowing through the waves like they weren't even there. Some of your missiles lose lock and explode, unable to keep up with her sudden speed change. A couple of your missiles manage to dive down and explode based on proximity fuse, showering the Destroyer Princess with shrapnel and incurring minor damage on her.

However, this doesn't stop her, as she lets loose a volley of torpedoes and gunfire.

>FATE POINT USED!
>You currently have 1 point.

Thankfully for you, the rough seas and high waves means it's practically impossible for torpedoes to stay on target, and the turbulent waters cause the torpedoes to tumble and veer in the water, allowing you to easily squeeze in between them.

And then both you and the Destroyer Princess open up on each other with your guns.

You see one of your 5 inch shells slam into the Destroyer Princess' shoulder, causing her to give an inhuman shriek. However, she manages to get her own volley off to devastating effect, drilling three shells right into your center mass.

The sheer force of the hits knocks you backwards and blows all the air out of your lungs, leaving you winded and dizzy.

You're both briefly interrupted by an explosion as the remaining Ri-class is presumably destroyed. Immediately, you see Johnston's back as she shields you from further attacks from the Destroyer Princess while Heerman grabs you and starts towing you away.

"Come on, we've done our job!" Heerman grunts. "Woel warned us that the rest of the Abyssal fleet is being drawn off to here. If we stay any longer we'll get surrounded!"

"Yeah, let's get out of here." You wheeze as Heerman helps you retreat under Johnston's protection. The Destroyer Princess attempts a few parting shots, but they're easily absorbed by Johnston's shield. For a second you were afraid the Destroyer Princess would pursue you all, but you guess she couldn't do anything being heavily outnumbered as she is right now.

"So what should we do?" Johnston asks, looking at you with concern. "Should we head straight for the rendezvous point? Hoel took a bad hit."

"We can't just leave the others behind." Heerman says with concern. "We need to make sure they get to safety.

"Get us back with the others." You manage to wheeze. You may be beat up, but your radar was still functional, so you could guide your sisters back to the main group.

"Got it." Heerman nods as she continues to tow you along. Johnston stays behind you both for a few more minutes to make sure you're not being pursued before catching up and helping tow you as well.

"Jeez, that damn Destroyer Princess..." Johnston frowns. "We keep running into that bitch."

"Yeah, I noticed she does show up quite a lot." Heerman nods.

"And loses every time." You cough, trying to reassure your sisters.

"I don't know." Heerman frowns. "I get the feeling she's learning from every battle she gets away from."

"We'll worry about that when it becomes a problem."

"I'm pretty sure a caved in chest counts as a problem!" Johnston reminds you.

"Shut up." You grunt. You check your radar again, and see that you're steadily catching back up with the Russians.

"We need to get you fixed up." Heerman continues. "Maybe we can get Sukhbaatar-"

"I'm good." You assure them, finally stumbling back on your two feet. "Just need to catch my breath."

"Okay..." Heerman frowns, not quite convinced.

"Just be careful." Johnston cautions. A rare thing for her.

"You know I am!" You grin, trying not to wince in pain from the chest aches.

"Ah! Hoel! I trust you had good battle?" Petropavlovsk waves happily as she sees you approach. "Have new scars to show off?"

"Yeah, something like that." You nod.

"Hey, I think we're almost out of the storm." Woel announces.

Sure enough, you could see that the waves were getting less extreme, and the wind was starting to die down.Plus the rain had lightened up quite a lot, though the sky was skill dark and overcast.

You give one final radar and sonar check around the area, and thankfully don't find any hostiles nearby. Evidently, the majority of the Abyssals had been drawn off to assist the Destroyer Princess after you ambushed her fleet. You just didn't see anything. Not even a sub or destroyer.

Were you in the clear....?

"It's about time."

You nearly leap into the air in fright when Flasher's head suddenly surfaces from the water right in front of you.

"I was wondering when the rest of you would get here." She says bluntly. "Just keep going on your current heading. The Captain already has transport ready and waiting.

"Ah good to know." You nod. You all had finally made it.

"And maybe you should go see Shen when you get back, too." Flasher adds as she starts slipping back underneath the waves.

"Ah, American sub, was that not?" Petroplavovsk asks as she sails up to you. "That means we are close?"

"Yeah, we're in the clear." You grin.

"Haha! That is good time for celebration then!" Petropavlovsk says happily as she pulls out a fresh bottle of vodka. You wonder where the hell she'd been stocking that the whole time.

"Well, get ready, Hoel." Woel grins and whispers to you. "Once she's in a celebratory mood like that, she's pretty much impossible to stop."

"Hoel, you have first honor!" The Russian battleship girl shoves the vodka bottle into your hands.
