Stage 154: Not Five-Two-Four, but Something Like It.

Typically, you don't use vehicular travel when you are going to Harajuku. For one, it defeats the purpose. Two, you are a terrible driver – it's not that you don't pay attention, you notice EVERYTHING. Three....well, you have a preference for the world under your feet and the air around you. You are a creature of Water and Wind, and vehicles are not exactly open to them.

Though there is something to be said to having an entire seat to yourself, a glass of brandy in hand, and looking upon two gorgeous women opposite you. Kiku-chan looks perfectly at ease in the car, despite the fact you don't think she's been in one for a long time. Er Yin, on the other hand, is a study in bizarre tensions. Her tail hidden, she has her hands in her lap, talons laced together and her ankles crossed. Being a creature of the Void – or Metal, to be precise – you would have imagined her being more relaxed surrounded by it and protected from the rush of movement through the world.

….is she nervous?

[] Pour some more brandy and share!
[] Tell her a little about Harajuku as it is now to ease her nerves.
[] Silently ask Kiku-chan what her Master is troubled by.
[] Ask Er Yin yourself what is bothering her.
[] You must be misreading the situation. She's ridden in vehicles before without issues.

Hi XS! How are you?

Time for best quest! And date!

Considering how hectic things have been, she and Kiku haven't really been on a date since Er Yin allowed herself to be sealed maybe? I mean, they might have and I've forgotten, but it seems like it'd be hard to find the time until now.
>>
>>1427644
>>1427648

Kinda rude to ask like that when Er Yin can answer by herself.
>>
>>1427655
From the wording I'd imagine the intent is for her to not hear, and get some info to best approach it without hitting some kinda sore spot or the like.
>>
>>1427625
>[] Pour some more brandy and share!
>[] Ask Er Yin yourself what is bothering her.
>>
>>1427659

Sure, but still. Even if Er Yin needs Kiku to answer in her stead, it's kind rude to not ask aloud
>>
>>1427662
We could be teasing her
>>
>>1427662
I guess. I see it more as trying to be a bit tactful. I doubt XS would make an intentionally rude option.
>>
>>1427625
>[X] Ask Er Yin yourself what is bothering her.
>>
>>1427662
Eh, I could see how it could be taken that way, but I could see it working differently like if Er Yin prides herself on being unflappable, she might not like being confronted about her nervousness, even if it's done in a gentle manner.

>>1427665
Pretty much this, as well.
>>
>>1427671
We are open and honest with our loved ones, full stop. The only thing that matters is being gentle about it, and Ryukusa isn't exactly lacking there.
>>
>>1427665
>>1427671

Oh, Ryukusa wouldn't be intentionally rude, but as a Water Dragonette she tends to want information before making her move, when here the move the more tactful for Er Yin is to ask.
>>
>>1427686

Like, I get that it'd be to spare her the bad feelings if it's a sore spot, but I think someone like Er Yin would be more displeased by two people talking about her feelings on her own rather than talking with her.

That's kind of glossing over her will and wants.
>>
>>1427693
I mean, we would be approaching her about whatever it is (assuming it's more than light nerves) afterwards either way, and I don't see the problem with your two loved ones discussing your well-being.
>>
[X] Distract her if you can't figure it out – that always works.
[+] Petting might be a good way to do that!

You pour Er yin a small glass of brandy as well – because there is no way in Ten Thousand Heavens that you are going to give Kiku-chan any alcohol EVER – and glance at Kiku-chan to see if she is willing to enlighten you as to her Master's nervous reaction. You've never really seen her quite like this; you've seen her before, during and after battle, naked and as vulnerable as a dragonette gets, in situations that should have been compromising, and even annoyed. But not nervous.

Kiku-chan only glances at you, her expression carefully blank. Her heart is calm, and her blood as cool as it gets, so it's nothing she's concerned about. You give her an annoyed look and she shrugs mildly, unwilling or unable to explain it. So you move on to the next step.

You slide off the seat and onto your feet on the floor in a liquid movement that causes Kiku's hair to explode; part of it is being able to do so in a cheongsam without mussing the dress or baring more than your thigh. You half rise and make your way to Er Yin, who tilts her head at the faint chime of golden chains, jade, and the rustle of silk. When you get there you plaice your hand on her knee, and curl up at her feet, looking up at the elegantly suited dragonette. Kiku's blood is heating up rapidly, but it is the blush that really makes you happy. You can imagine what you look like, dressed in black silk, gold and jade, coiled at the feat of the tall sorceress in her masculine styling, offering her the slender glass of rich brandy.

They make movies for scenes like this, you're quite sure.

“Not nervous about our date, Er Yin....” you not-quite-ask.

She accepts the brandy gingerly and her hand reaches over to Kiku, who discretely places herself under so that Er Yin may stroke her silk-covered thigh lightly with those awesome, gruesome talons of silver. “Not precisely, Ryukusa-sama,” she replies, sounding calm enough. “I have not been in the city – in any city – for a very long time.” She suddenly smiles. “In fact, my first return to this city was in your arms, at the train station.”

Kiku-chan looks at you curiously.

“The water feature at the Harajuku station is useful for cleansing oneself of lingering trace; it's the safest method to enter Shikoku without being followed.” She looks at you dubiously. “It's also very precarious and slippery, since it polished stone with water running over it.” She nods in understanding then, and relaxes as Er Yin sips the brandy slowly, savoring the sweetness of it. “Harajuku will be very busy in comparison to the times we've been in public so far; not quite as loud as the beach party, but more....intense. There are cliques and gangs, and I'm pretty infamous there as a designer and cos-player, so you can expect us to be accosted a few times.”

“It has always been a center of fashion, as I understand it,” she replies, slowly calming down. “But it is more the spirits of the city and the shrine guardians I am worried about.” You frown faintly, and Kiku's expression is a sudden and firm blank, which only increases your frown. “And you, Ryukusa-sama? Are you nervous to be on this date?” You smile and drain your brandy so you can place your hands over her thigh and est your chin on them, looking up at her. Kiku squirms a little and Er Yin raises her eyebrows at the faint movement.

[] It's not the date that I am nervous about, honestly.
[] Maybe a little, but more because of our loved ones.
[] Not in the way that you might think, I suppose. I just want it to be good.

>Chinese social etiquette expects subtle prying about ones feelings that are easily detected and obviously overt when you are concerned, while not being direct.

>This is the opposite of the Japanese where feelings like that are supposed to be completely ignored except among intimates,a nd even then asking directly is incredibly embarrassing for both parties - Ryukusa can be a little 'brusque' about such matters where her loved ones are concerned, but Ryukusa is Ryukusa., so it can't be helped.

[x] I am the master of all fields of battle, darling Er Yin, and this is just one more!

You hum softly, letting her know you are giving some thought to the answer. Rather, that you are giving some thought on how to phrase your answer, because 'thinking' about something like that isn't exactly how it works for you. “Not in the typical manner. I would like it to be a good date for you, but I'm not worried about impressing you, or making you happy as much as I am that things go nicely enough that you have a good time, if that makes any sense outside my head.” Kiku mostly just kind of blinks at you, your convoluted 'logic' alien to her Fire-driven mind.

Er Yin smiles and sets her glass aside (unerringly placing it in the cup-holder, you notice) so that she can lightly trace your cheek with her powerful, thick talons. You press your cheek into her palm and she cups it as you close your eyes, reveling in the warm touch. It's strange and yet reassuring, to be caressed in such a manner. Something you usually are doing to others, once again. You wonder if Yui-chan feels this way, relaxed and calmed, yet warm and happy inside. “I think that your fears will not be realized, and that all will go well. Kiki-hime was quite....” She pauses and asks Kiku-chan something in Ainu, something about how one says a particular phrase that you don't quite understand. Kiku-chan tells her, and Er yin smiles indulgently. “....Beside herself, when I asked her about some of the plans for the evening.”

“I'm not really surprised,” you murmur as the car starts to slow down. “Shibuya has a certain reputation, shopping aside. Not nearly as bad as where we're going next, but close. And, since you mentioned it, where we are going first are the street-side temples that guard the gateway to the hell that is Harajuku.” You slowly rise and lean close, kissing Er Yin slowly and deeply....though your hand sneaks over to slide through and over the red silk and warm gold of your priestess' hair and horns. Kiku shudders and Er Yin takes the kiss form you, her hand moving up your dress to caress your breast firmly yet gently, and you're not quite sure when it became her kissing you but it does.

You break the kiss with a gasp and shiver lightly. “I don't think I will ever get used to being the girl,” you murmur softly,. Much to Er Yin's amusement and Kiku-chan's muttered insults to your intelligence.

“Is that such a bad thing?” teases Er Yin softly.

You do step out of the chauffeuse-opened door first; no matter how feminine you may feel, you are ever and always the bodyguard.

[] Not in the least.
[] It's merely strange, that's all....
[] I'm not sure 'bad' is the word, as much as 'weird'.
[] Considering my best friend can break me over her knee and still make me feel masculine...?
[] Er Yin, you could be wearing a dress and I could be in the suit and you'd still make me feel like the girl.

[XX] Not in the least.
[XX] Er Yin, you could be wearing a dress and I could be in the suit and you'd still make me feel like the girl.
[X] Considering my best friend can break me over her knee and still make me feel masculine...?

You offer your hand to Er Yin and guide her through the doorway of the limousine easily, the Sticky Palm technique easily suggesting to her how to move and when so that she doesn't hit her horns or bump the door. It really is nice to have professionals to work with.

“Well, when you consider that my Herald and personal oni who is taller and more muscular than I am is not only a tomboy but a total and utter dyke, while my Harbinger and best friend is strong enough to break me in half, and they both make me out to be the masculine one, you can kind of appreciate that it's strange for me, isn't it?” you guide Er Yin to stand next to you, and then turn back to help Kiku out of the car.

Kiku slides along the seat, and you offer your hand to her. She blinks slowly at you, and then rather seriously takes your hand and allows you to help her out, before slipping her fingers into her Master's. Her blush is a slow, warm burn that develops into a soft heat along her cheeks and throat. She is totally adorable, as she walks at Er Yin's side to guide her as you head towards the small street-side shrine that marks the boundary of Shikoku and Harajuku.

Er Yin is laughing softly at your explanation, and you glance over at her. “And to make it even more ridiculous, if you were in a dress and I were in one of my suits, you would still make me feel more feminine than I usually do.” The images of the muscular, hard body of your sorceress in a body baring dress gives you a little frisson of pleasure, which you do not feel guilty about in the slightest for imagining. That comparison nets you a little laugh, while Kiku-chan looks at her Master with that oddly blank expression. “That said....it isn't a bad thing, at all, Er Yin-sensei. I enjoy being your girl in every way, in many ways. I wouldn't give it up for anything.” You lean over slightly and slip your talons into hers, the sapphire ringing softly along the silver.

That seems to relax Kiku-chan, and she glances at you slightly before turning her attention to the shrine....and slows down.
>>
>>1427916
“Tengu.”

You look at the shrine and then do a double take.

“Tengu-children?” asks Er Yin curiously.

You reply softly. “No. Tengu. About five of them.”

They are sitting about the large bolder near the entrance ton Harajuku street, next to the shrine, and looking somewhat imperious and menacing, though that could be because their beaks don't allow for much expression. Their saffron and white robes are dirty and a little old, and they are not moving about much, perched, sitting, and standing near the rock like a gang. The humans only sense something strange. Their eyes flick this way and that as they hover gang-like near the shrine.

“There's no festival or holy day....” Kiku-chan murmurs softly, her Fire Eyes taking in their essences.

[] Make your obeisances at the shrine and politely acknowledge them – nothing more, or less.

[XX] Make a specific offering to them as well as the usual offerings – you are one of their favored dragonettes, after all.

[X] Politely ask if they are waiting on someone or something, after you finish at the shrine.

The five tengu blinks and move their heads slightly, but don't seem to do more than that. They shift positions only slightly; their movements are very birdlike, but also those of people used to waiting in one place for long periods of time – a muscle tense here, a slight shift to relieve pressure there. They are all quite different. One has a nearly birdlike head, while another looks almost entirely human except for feathers at his wrists and a nose that is nearly a foot long. Another is portly and carries nothing so menacing as a tiny kaiken, with which he could kill all three of you without effort. Fourth has feathers instead of hair and a birdlike beak for a mouth, but human flesh otherwise. The last has actual wings and bird talons for feet, but otherwise looks human.

“Kiku-chan, what is the best offering to make to them personally without offense or....” You stare at them, as all their heads are now facing you and their eyes fixed on you. “....or undue ceremony?” Creepy, yes, but also very intense. Not truly frightening, just....very....alien.

“Cone incense, snuffed. Four pieces, in a trapezoid, small side facing away from you.” She murmurs, keeping her head down, though less out of respect than to avoid the attention that you seem to have garnered for the moment.

“Like Mount Fuji,” you murmur, understanding immediately that these mountain spirits will appreciate it. Er yin smiles at your comment and for some ridiculous reason you feel like you should be blushing at that simple smile.

The Shrine is small, the size of a small garden shed perhaps, only about four feet tall. There are plenty of incense sticks, and a small coin box. You pay for Er Yin's incense sticks which she lites and then gently waves to put out so as not to offend the spirits. Your priestess does not light incense, but at her paired claps, the five tengu all turn their heads towards her (though two do this by turning their heads to the side to look at her). Her prayers are a rush of Ainu litanies, and the tengu tilt, bob, and lift their heads, intensely interested by the prayers that are given, not only to them, but to the spirits of the district, the trees that grow within the district, the small spirits that wander the streets, and the guardians who watch over their worshipers.

You pay for your incense and light the cones, one by one, and use the provided brass snuffer to put out the flames. Power or breath would insult the spirits; it is one of the earliest of lessons. You wouldn't appreciate someone breathing in your face either, you suppose. You offer the few prayers you know or would dare, and then your priestess claps her hands twice more before you rise and take Er Yin's hand once more.

Only to find the five tengu have come down from their perches and stations, and now stand between you and the entrance to the Harajuku Street entry.

You wait a moment but all five study you carefully, some touching their weapons, others huddling in their robes. “Are you looking for someone? Is there something that can be done to assuage your needs?” Kiku-chan is looking rather alarmed, while Er yin is calmly waiting, her pupils lit up like stars as her Void Eyes take in the five strange youkai – or kami. Tengu are an oddity.

“You did well.” You look at the human faced tengu who speaks, only to turn to the beak-faced one. “The Devil King. The Demon Lord.” The feather wristed one mutters softly. “His most Loathsome Majesty.” The other two merely nod in agreement.

“It was what I needed to do,” you admit, not quite sure where this is going.

“You are puissant,” the fat one states. “You have traveled a long and difficult road well,” observes the winged one. “There are demons in your future,” claims the long nosed one. The other two nod in agreement.

You're really at a loss, and you hesitate, while Er Yin counsels patience onto the back of your hand with her thumb-talon. You take a slow deep breath and nod slowly.

The rotund one steps forward. “You will face demons again.” The beaked one throws his head back and half-crows, half chuckles, while the winged one bobs his head. The feather headed one glances to the left and the right, his eyes looking in two directions so badly that it's how he ha to look at you. “You may call upon us,” he mutters, not grudgingly, just speaking that way. The bird-headed one bows ever so slightly. “We will assist you.”

There is the sound of wings and the cloud that seems to have hidden the sun dissipates or passes, and the mortal world crashes around the three of you like a waterfall of color and noise.

Er Yin blinks slowly, her Void Eyes closing. Kiku-chan seems pretty pleased with herself, and you look at the bustle of Harajuku before you.

“I think it will be a nice date after all,”you murmur, as Kiku nods in agreement.

>with which he could kill all three of you without effort

That has to be an exaggeration, Ryukusa alone is a demigod.

Anyway, thanks for running XS

Maybe a small one.

But tengu are kami, as well, not youkai or spirit-children.

Thanks for running, XS.

Is there any indication or assumption of how we might call upon them, or when? Or is this the kind of thing when we'll know when the time is right?

Unfortunately, they are kami, and will either come when called, when you need them, or when they feel that you are needing them whether you want them there or not. On the plus side they specifically mentioned demon fighting, so that means that you'll be fighting demons and be able to call on them.

On the negative, you'll be fighting demons.

Contusions are just annoying nowadays.

Also they might decide we need to fight the demons even if we're trying something else
